Longtime Highlands Ranch resident Jim McCarthy spends as much
time as possible outdoors. With a house on the edge of open space, he takes walks, gardens and just hangs out in the backyard. But recently, his peaceful time outside has been disturbed, he said. “I’ve noticed over the last year or year and a half unbelievably loud, low-flying planes,” McCarthy said. “I hear planes all the time.” McCarthy, 68, has been researching the possible causes and reach-
ing out to Centennial Airport, local leaders and others to see if there’s anything that can be done about the issue. He’s not the only Highlands Ranch resident complaining about the noise, though. In 2019, Centennial Airport received 38 noise complaints from Highlands Ranch. In 2020, the number climbed to 245 complaints, according to data provided by the airport.
While many of these complaints come from just a handful of households, Centennial Airport acknowledges that some of the added noise impact in Highlands Ranch could be because of recent increases in pilot training sessions following a nationwide shortage of pilots.
