Hanson, Ray win; Meek in lead

One race remained close in the Douglas County School Board election in the early morning hours of Nov. 6, while two other candidates held strong leads over their opponents and were on their way to securing seats on the seven-member board.

As of results posted by the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office at 4 a.m. the morning after Election Day, District A candidate Susan Meek led Andy Jones 51.1% to 48.9%, with 80,339 votes counted.

“There’s been a great turnout and it’s probably too early for me to comment on the results,” Meek said shortly after 9:30 p.m. Nov. 5, holding a 2-percentage point lead. “It’s somewhat close.”

She was remaining “cautiously optimistic.” Regardless of the election’s outcome, she was impressed with the community support and the desire to move the district in a positive direction that she saw throughout her campaign, she said.

Jones said he would “continue to be a strong voice for the community,” win or lose.

“We are watching returns and not ready to make any concessions at this point,” he said on Election Night. “I am extremely proud of my campaign and supporters. There is a groundswell of support in this community and that is the voice that I tapped into.”

As of 10:42 p.m. Nov. 5, Douglas County had counted 93,461 votes, representing the vast majority of ballots cast.

The other two school board races showed clear winners.

Elizabeth Hanson led Franceen Thompson in District C 59.5% to 40.5%. Incumbent and board president David Ray led his challenger, Kory Nelson, 54.3% to 45.7%.

Nelson was home and ready to concede to Ray shortly before 10 p.m., although he had not called his opponent yet, he said. Nelson said he was proud to secure more than 45% of the vote. “(Ray) did not win a super majority of our population, and I hope he takes that to heart,” Nelson said.

Thompson, in a statement provided to Colorado Community Media, thanked her supporters and volunteers for their work on her campaign.

“This wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but we ran a clean campaign based on the issues,” she said.

As the first election results trick

Ray was the only incumbent who ran for reelection. District A Director Wendy Vogel and District C Director Anne-Marie Lemieux did not seek a second term.

The newly elected directors must be sworn in within 10 days after election results are certified, but the district has not set an exact date for the ceremony, a spokeswoman said. Results must be certified by Nov. 29, according

Candidates steered clear of calling themselves slates but two camps emerged throughout the election.

Ray, Meek and Hanson pooled resources and dubbed themselves a “team.” The three garnered support from the Douglas County teachers’ union and political committee Douglas County Parents.

First elected in 2015, Ray serves as the board president. The Parker resident said he was running to continue the work he and other candidates elected in 2015 pursued since then, like improving teacher retention.

Hanson, of Highlands Ranch, leaned on her career in human resources and employment law and said she hoped to improve the district’s work environment. She has three children in elementary school and is therefore invested in the district’s long-term success, she said.

Meek entered the race with deep knowledge of Douglas County schools, having worked in the district for six years. The Highlands Ranch resident is the director of strategic engagement and communications for the Colorado Association of School Boards.

Meanwhile, Nelson and Jones were vocal supporters of one another during their campaigns and suggested Thompson would bring good perspective to the board as well. The three knew each other but not well, Jones told Colorado Community Media in October.

majority of Douglas County taxpayers.” Jones, also of Highlands Ranch, said he aimed to improve relationships between the district, teachers and families. Nelson, an attorney who lives in Parker, said his wife who is a teacher and his daughter who is a student in the district inspired him to run.

School safety was a key issue in the campaign.

Thompson chose to run after her children’s school, STEM School Highlands Ranch, fell victim to a school shooting tragedy in May. She argued all security options should be considered by directors and promised not to let politics interfere with which options she considered.

Jones is an airline pilot who served in the military for 30 years. From that experience, Jones said he would bring a “never-seen level of security expertise” to the board.

Nelson argued his work on a school safety committee created by the Douglas County commissioners after STEM and his advocacy for more school resource officers also gave him expertise in the area of school safety.

All three candidates said they would be open to discussing arming teachers and staff.

Ray, Meek and Hanson stood staunchly opposed to arming staff and teachers. They support the district’s safe schools policy and said security measures should draw from evidencebased practices. Arming teachers and staff is not expert-recommended, the candidates said.

A ballot item that would reallocate a portion of the county’s 1% sales tax from the justice center to roads appeared to be on its way to passing in the Nov. 5 election.

The measure would extend 0.13% of the sales tax, preventing it from sunsetting in December 2020, and would move 0.18% of the tax from the justice center to roads.

Beginning January 1, 2020, roads would receive 0.58% of the sales tax, the justice center 0.25% and open space will remain at 0.17%. This will provide an additional $12.5 million per year for roads in the county.

As of 9:30 on Election Night, Ballot Issue 1A received almost 52% of the vote.

“Tonight’s win sends the message that voters understand better roads lead to better lives,” County Commissioner Roger Partridge said. “Voters also resonated with the message that 1A does not come with a tax hike. It is a smart policy solution to a complicated issue. We are glad that voters of all backgrounds and party affiliations educated themselves on the measure and got behind it.”

In 2017, Commissioner Lora Thomas

proposed moving 0.23% of the sales tax from the justice center to roads, a move that was strongly opposed by the sheriff ’s office. The measure failed and in June of this year, another proposal was made to move 0.13% of the tax to roads.

Thomas voted against the proposal, saying it wouldn’t be enough.

In September, the commissioners unanimously approved the ballot question that appeared in the Nov. 5 election.

Approval of ballot item 1A would mean a list of transportation projects aiming to improve congestion in the county will be fast-tracked.

A committee for the ballot item, called Better Roads 4 Douglas County, spent nearly $38,000 on Facebook advertisements, road signs and a letter campaign supporting the measure, according to their financial reports.

The committee raised a total of $108,000, with major contributors including Sterling Ranch with a $60,000 donation and MDC Holdings contributing $20,000.

As of 5 p.m. on election day, Douglas County had already exceeded its voter turnout from 2017 by more than 5,000 votes. About 45% of votes came in on Monday and Tuesday, according to the county’s website.

Vandals threaten community art program HRCA worries they can’t continue to fund the project with continued vandalism

In the past six months, two pieces of public art worth thousands of dollars have been vandalized in a Highlands Ranch park, causing community leaders to worry about continuing the program.

Both sculptures, located in Civic Green Park, were part of Douglas County’s Art Encounters program.

The program, which is funded in part by the nonprofit Highlands Ranch Cultural Affairs Association, began about 10 years ago through collaboration from multiple communities, including the Highlands Ranch Community Association, Castle Rock, Parker and Lone Tree.

One piece, called “Twirl,” was damaged in June, then repaired, then broken again and eventually permanently removed.

A second vandalized sculpture, titled “Elegant Lady,” was found in late October and community leaders fear it can’t be fixed, said HRCA communications director Jamie Noebel.

“We are obviously devastated at this as these are two are wonderful pieces of art we display for the beautification and enjoyment of our community,”

she said in an email.

Last year, another sculpture that was in front of the library was damaged by people hanging and pulling on it, she said.

Noebel worries that the HRCA won’t be able to continue the program if the vandalism persists.

“We want to continue this wonderful program for our community, but with issues like this happening it makes it difficult for us to pay for repair,” she said. “Or, as in this case, probably replacement.”

“Twirl” was valued at $6,000 and “Elegant Lady” was worth $18,000, said Sara Walla, HRCA’s senior marketing manager.

The HRCA has filed a report with the sheriff ’s office and hopes to find those responsible.

“It is terribly sad to us that people don’t have more respect for this art,” Noebel said.

While this type of vandalism is not common in the area, the sheriff ’s office planned to set up an “increased patrol” in the park, which means more deputies will keep an eye on the area, said sheriff ’s office spokeswoman Cocha Heyden.

These types of cases can be either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the cost of the damaged item, she said.

Residents will honor those who have served in the U.S. armed forces at the annual Highlands Ranch Veterans Day Celebration. The celebration begins at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 inside the James H. LaRue Library, which sits adjacent to the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument.

Natalie Tysdal, anchor of “Daybreak” on Channel 2, will serve as master of ceremonies, and Sgt. First Class Harold Waterman will deliver the keynote address. The Highlands Ranch Veterans Day Celebration also features Highlands Ranch American Legion Post 1260, the Knights of Columbus Pax Christi Assembly 3353, and the Highlands Ranch Concert

Band.

Local Scout Troop 873 will greet guests as they arrive and scout Jay Powell will lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Headliner Vocals’ Diamond Group and Silver Group will sing a national anthem medley, accompanied by Jeevee Balangan on keyboard.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early and visit the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument, outside of the library, prior to the event. A focal point of the monument is a special tribute memorial to three hometown heroes whose names are etched in stone: Staff Sgt. Christopher Falkel, Sgt. Jon Stiles and Cpl. Max Donahue.

Tri-County Health Department declares youth vaping a crisis Health department board lays out steps to combat epidemic

As the state health department continues investigating vaping-related illnesses and doubles down on preventing tobacco use among youths, local health agencies are also taking action.

That includes the Tri-County Health Department, which serves roughly 1.5 million people in Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

Tri-County’s board on Oct. 15 adopted a resolution declaring youth vaping a crisis and laid out measures community members can take to combat the issue.

“Tri-County Health Department works to reduce the impact of tobacco by partnering with communities to provide tobacco prevention and cessation resources,” Executive Director John Douglas said in a statement. “We are expanding those evidence-based successes to fight our epidemic of eyouth vaping, including the recently recognized vaping associated acute lung disease.”

Douglas noted 27% of Colorado youths report vaping.

Alison Reidmohr, the Tobacco Com-

munications Strategist with the state health department, said that is more than twice the national average and the highest in the nation.

“That level of nicotine exposure for young people who are in adolescence, whose brains are still in development, is really a cause for concern,” she said.

The department is frequently asked why Colorado’s youth vaping rates are so high, Reidmohr said. One theory is that tobacco companies have historically used Colorado as a test market when pitching products.

“It’s possible that vaping products have been marketed more heavily and longer in Colorado than other states,” she said.

She added that Colorado is one of “only a handful of states” that don’t license tobacco retailers, and that social norms may contribute to the epidemic. Vaping indoors wasn’t banned in Colorado until July, when an update to the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act went into effect.

Reidmohr said her department supports local agencies in addressing youth vaping through technical support in drafting polices and with grant dollars.

The Tri-County Health Department in its resolution detailed how community members can curb youth vaping: • School districts and schools should enforce tobacco-free policies. They should lean on restorative justice and

alternatives to suspension, in order to keep students in school. Focus health education on life skills and decision making.

• Local governments should consider strong regulations on retailers.

That could include licensing tobacco retailers, raising the minimum legal sales age and banning the sale of flavored tobacco or nicotine products.

Reidmohr said 19 Colorado communities have raised the legal sales age from 18 to 21, and 26 communities have passed local retail licensing regulations.

Parents should educate themselves and talk to their children openly about vaping. Youths can speak to their peers about coping with stress in healthy ways.

While Reidmohr’s department works on preventions, other state officials are investigating vaping-related illnesses.

The public is urged against using any type of vaping product at this time, said Elyse Contreras, the state health department’s lead epidemiologist investigating Colorado’s cases in the outbreak.

There have been 11 reported cases of vaping-related illnesses in Colorado. Nine of those placed people in the hospital. There are more than 600 cases nationally. Symptoms include shortness of breath, trouble breathing, chest pain, coughing, fatigue and fever.

Federal agencies are investigating the illness’ cause or causes, which remain unknown.

The state health department works with local communities to gather data on the outbreak, Contreras said.

They urged health agencies and hospitals to look out for the illness and report any cases to the state department.

Contreras stressed anyone displaying symptoms should see their doctor.

“If they become sick, definitely hold on to the product for us to collect to send off for testing,” she said.

Sixty percent have less than $10,000 in savings (including investments and retirement plans), and debt among seniors has never been higher. Nearly half of homeowners ages 65–79 carry a mortgage.

In addition, seniors are living longer than previous generations.

All this adds up to a tough reality: funding longevity is hard.

However, there is a smart way to afford retirement, and live without a monthly mortgage payment: a home equity conversion mortgage, or HECM. To qualify for a government-insured HECM (reverse mortgage), at least one borrower must be 62 or older, the home must be your primary residence, and you should have 40–60% equity. Volunteer of the year Receiving the volunteer of the year award is an honor and very humbling, as we have many outstanding volunteers at Children’s Hospital Colorado South Campus. It reinforces that I am in the right place making a difference.

The greatest reward is seeing that child and their parents smile, knowing their child is in the right place receiving the best medical care.

I have lived in Colorado 18 years and Highlands Ranch eight years. A job transfer brought my family to Colorado and a life change brought me to Highlands Ranch. Children’s Hospital was built about 6 1/2 years ago and was the right place for me to volunteer and make a difference in the community. The medical team is outstanding with incredible care for children. You know you are in the right place when you see those balloons.

An involved citizen I volunteer at Children’s Hospital Colorado where there are many opportunities to make a difference.

Children’s Hospital works with your availability and has a variety of department needs. I volunteer in the emergency/urgent care area. I am also a member of Children’s Hospital Colorado’s South Metro Volunteer Chapter that works in the community and has a presence at many events with something for parents and kids. A favorite of mine is the Hometown Holiday tree lighting at Town Center.

These questions seem to stem from a working relationship straight out of the Wolf of Wall Street movie. Unfortunately, for too many investors this is their experience.

In 2015 my industry was put on notice that the landscape was changing by way of the Fiduciary Rule proposed by the Obama administration. The rule was born out of the simple principal: You want to give financial advice, you’ve got to

put your client’s interests first. Makes sense, right? Seems like a no-brainer? But through many appeals, hearings, and delays, the fiduciary rule has yet to become law.

Even though not required, we choose to practice a fiduciary standard in our office which means we are morally obligated to put our clients’ best interest first. The investment advice you receive must be made using accurate and complete information.

We must disclose any conflicts of interest and use a “best execution” standard when trading your money.

This high standard also requires meeting with our clients at least once per year to review their portfolio and plan.

It is a high standard, but essential for anyone handling your money. If

School consultant offers guidance for Spanish speakers Grant goes toward promoting family engagement, outreach

Consultant Patsy Roybal recently worked with the Douglas County School District to provide families who are not proficient in English with resources and knowledge about their children’s education in Douglas County.

Her work was paid for with part of a $130,000 grant the district received after winning the English Roybal Language Proficiency Act Excellence Award from the Colorado Department of Education last year.

Roybal retired from Denver Public Schools, where she was the director of training and leadership development for the Office of Family and Community Engagement. She went on to serve as a Colorado director for the California-based Parent Teacher Home Visits Project.

She spoke to Colorado Community Media about her experience working in Douglas County.

How did you get involved with working in the Douglas County School District?

I received a call from Becky Corr, who is a team lead for the English Language Development Program. She wanted to know if I would be willing to provide some workshops, parent leadership workshops, to some of her families who spoke Spanish. Becky seemed so sincere in her desire to authentically engage with families who speak a language other than English.

We came up with this idea of doing a five-week parent leadership training.

We started the conversation around July and August and had our first training in September.

What does your consulting work in the district entail?

My primary responsibility with Douglas County was really to provide these five sessions of parent leadership development and then go back and provide a training session for families so they can then take the information they learn and share it with other families in their school communities.

What did families learn at the sessions?

The first session really had to do with parent engagement — the key to student success. Parents learned about what research is telling us around how important family engagement is. Things like supporting and encouraging and motivating their kids

to excel. Having conversations with them about their hopes and aspirations, future careers and college.

Monitoring their children’s academic progress their attendance their behavior. Really getting to know their kids, areas where they are having a lot of success but also areas where they are struggling. And just being that advocate for their child to be sure that are getting the best education possible.

Then we went on to help them understand the school system, because a lot of these families attended school maybe in Mexico, we had one parent from Cuba, where the educational system is different. Expectations for family engagement might be different.

So, they come into our educational system and they really aren’t sure what the expectations for family engagement are.

I helped them understand how our system works. What is the role of the superintendent? What are the roles and responsibilities of board members? Who is their board member that they can go to? What are the roles and responsibilities of staff members within schools? Who do you go to if you have a problem with your student — and especially, who do you go to if you don’t speak English?

After that we then went into understanding data. We also then made sure that they understood what CMAS was and that they understood what the Colorado Academic Standards are.

Why do you think this training is important to provide for families?

The reason it’s so important is because we have over 30 years of research that is clearly telling us that when families are engaged in their children’s education, their children get higher grades, they do better on state assessments, they attend school more regularly, they graduate from high school at higher rates and are more likely to enroll in higher education.

Regardless of the economic, ethnic or culture background of the family, parent engagement is a major factor in ensuring a student’s success. So, it’s really important that we reach out to all families. If you engage all families, especially families that speak a language other than English, the school district is going to be more successful in closing in achievement gaps that exist. And I think it’s just a healthier community when all families come together with a common interest of improving student achievement.

What’s next for the training sessions?

Ideally, they want to expand this to families who speak other languages.

They want to have more of a multilingual lens. But they wanted to start with the Spanish speakers to see what the results would be and then continue to expand it.

Case moves forward against mom accused of killing child A friend of Kelly Turner traveled to the courtroom from Texas

Ruby King, a family friend of Kelly Turner, the woman recently charged with killing her daughter, traveled to Douglas County from Texas to attend the hearing on Nov. 1.

The Highlands Ranch woman who was recently charged with the murder of her daughter more than two years after the girl’s death appeared in a Douglas County courtroom Nov. 1 as a judge heard preliminary motions.

Kelly Turner, 41, was arrested Oct. 18 after a grand jury returned a 13-count indictment on charges that include murder, child abuse, theft and forgery.

The indictment said Turner convinced doctors to stop treating Turner her 7-year-old daughter, Olivia, whom Turner said was terminally ill, and within months, the girl died. An autopsy later showed the girl didn’t have many of the conditions her mother claimed, according to the indictment.

Ruby King, who traveled to the courtroom from her home in East Texas, used to go to church with Turner, she said.

King broke down in tears when Turner entered the courtroom in a red inmate jumpsuit and handcuffs and stared at her throughout the hearing.

Turner’s daughter died in Denver Hospice care in August 2017 after a battle with what her mother said was intestinal failure and about a dozen other conditions. The indictment, released in October, revealed that many doctors didn’t believe Olivia was a terminal patient and that Turner was ignoring repeated recommendations from her daughter’s physicians.

That spirit of hope is quite impressive. With the group that I was working with in Douglas County, it went beyond that. There was this strong desire from families to reach out to other families in their community.

and set a court date for Jan. 21.

In the courtroom, King wore a pink T-shirt from a Texas fundraiser with the words “Peace for Princess Olivia” on it. When Turner and her children were living in Texas, King and other friends did what they could to support Olivia through her illness, King said.

Looking back, King said there were signs something was amiss, including that no one was allowed to visit Olivia in the hospital and that Turner said she moved to Denver for better care for the child.

“I questioned her moving to Denver because Houston has a worldrenowned children’s hospital,” King said. “Why would you live somewhere else?”

King planned to return for the next hearing in January, she said.

“I know her soul, there’s something wrong with it,” King said. “She needs prayer.”

Okay, okay, there’s no two ways about it

had writer’s block. I had no original ideas. I knew if the block lingered, I would revert, and harangue about the injustices being, like, done, like, to, like, the English language.

So I went to JenQUIET nifer and said, “Help DESPERATION me, please. Give me an idea, a topic, a subject, a theme,” and you know what she said?

She said, “Okay.”

I looked at those luminous periwinkles of hers and said, “Thank you, thank you.”

This one little word — or two letters — is said over and over, all day and all night, to express “assent, agreement, or acceptance.”

Why not “AC” instead, because most of us language historian types agree that “OK” stands for “all correct.”

Well, because language, she is a funny girl.

Have you ever wondered where “shampoo,” “tattoo,” and “barbecue” came from? I’ll save those for my next bout of writer’s block. Okay?

Some think “OK” comes from oblique thinking, and it’s a twist around of “oll korrect,” as an obvious witticism that wasn’t “all correct.”

And that it can be traced to the 19th century.

Right now, right this minute, there are abbreviations and acronyms that

might stay with us just as OK has.

For examples; “LOL” and “OMG,” neither of which you will see here, unless they are used facetiously.

That word “facetious” won me a prize.

Long before Turner Classic Movies, there was a Los Angeles television station that showed movies all day, and, unlike Turner, it was not commercial-free.

However, like Turner, there was a host, and he sometimes quizzed viewers.

One day, he asked for words in the English language that have all five vowels in order.

It turns out there are twenty-seven, but most of them (“travertinous”) rarely are used.

I called in “facetious” and won a six-pack of furniture polish.

Did I have furniture? When I was a

college student in the 1960s and the 1970s, my furniture was sometimes the floor.

I had cinder blocks and one by sixes for bookshelves. You don’t polish one by sixes.

But I had won, and that’s all that mattered. The host mentioned my name on the air.

“Greg Smith,” he said.

But I didn’t mind. I was okay with it.

Whenever I feel an “OK” coming on, I write “okay” instead.

For one very good reason: “OK” is the accepted abbreviation for “Oklahoma.” And if you have seen the play or the film or simply heard the soundtrack of the Rodgers and Hammerstein project, you know what I mean.

ow, there are six “f ” words in the title of this column. And I am sure you have noticed that they are slightly different from what some might think about when they consider the “f ” word.

If you are like WINNING others, you probably WORDS thought about “f ” words like faith, family, friends, fortune, fitness, fantastic, focused, fabulous, fortunate, freedom, forgiveness, fellowship, feelings, and a few other fresh and fulfilling words that foster fruitful friend- Michael Norton ships.

Not trying to tell anyone how to use the “f ” word, I am just trying to suggest there are so many other alternatives that may be an equally, or maybe an even more effective and fun way to make our point. Feelings often facilitate or fuel our desire to want to use the “f ” word, especially when we have been hurt or disappointed. I get it, and you are probably thinking the

same thing as me right now, that when we are hurt or disappointed, we immediately go to our “f ” words, forgiveness and freedom. Or phrased slightly differently, the freedom that comes with forgiveness.

Oh, that’s not what you were thinking? That’s OK too. There is always a first time for everything. Kind of like the first time I was asked to try cauliflower. I didn’t really care for it — as a matter of fact it was far from fantastic or fabulous, I thought it tasted foul. But then one day a chef had prepared it differently, presented it on the plate in a fresh and favorable way, and when I tasted it, I experienced a festive and flavorful meal that was truly phenomenal. Okay, so I cheated with the “ph” but you get the point right?

I often write about how important our word choices are and how they impact our attitude and our behaviors.

They influence how others perceive us and if we are not careful, our words can damage our reputation and our relationships. Our words can cause feelings of fear, failure, and fragility.

For folks who follow this column, my favorite “f ” word will come as no surprise, forgiveness. Unconditional forgiveness. Unconditional love and forgiveness. And yes, the other “f ” words that come to mind when thinking about forgiveness are the faith to trust in the power of forgiveness, remembering that our family comes first, so do not withhold forgiveness; eternity is a forever thing and we should forgive as we have been forgiven; to be fearless and courageous enough to offer forgiveness; and to experience and enjoy the freedom that comes with unconditional forgiveness. I encourage you to try that last one for sure, I believe you might like it.

The launch of the Colorado Digital ID in the myColorado mobile app, the state’s official mobile app, was announced Oct. 30 by Gov. Jared Polis, according to a news release. Colorado Digital ID is a secure, unique visual representation of what has traditionally been the legally accepted official physical format of a person’s identification.

Polis also signed an executive order stating that Colorado Digital ID shall be authorized, and may be accepted, as a legal form of personal identification for use in Colorado, the release said. The Colorado business community is highly encouraged to begin accepting the Digital ID, and state agencies are advised to accept it beginning Dec. 1.

The Connection Project has launched a digital resource event. “Everyday Brave” supports the emergency responder community though a series of real-life stories shared through podcasts and a list of support resources for emergency responders, according to a news release.

The Connection Project’s founder and president, Jason C. Hopcus, hosts eight Everyday Brave podcasts, featuring emergency responders, leadership and way-makers from the Denver metro emergency responder community.

Additionally, emergency responders will be connected to a digital resource list tailor-made for life needs of emergency responders. The list offers support resources in key areas

The Connection Project’s mission is to create sustainable connections that meet people where they are. It takes a fresh approach by focusing on those who have turned their personal struggle around to champion for a community-driven cause.

hile watching the snowfall can be relaxing and playing in it can be a lot of fun, driving in Colorado’s snowstorms can be less than desirable.

“We know it’s going to happen,” said Andrew Hogle, a public information officer with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the organization’s Winter Wise campaign.

“We’re going to get a snow event.”

There are two new laws Colorado drivers should be aware of when driving in snowy weather. One is the snowplow law, which affects all motorists statewide. It requires that drivers not pass working snowplows. The second is the passenger vehicle traction law, which primarily affects I-70 drivers — including ski resort destinations — west of the metro area.

Colorado’s traction law If winter weather driving conditions are bad enough, CDOT can implement an active traction law on any state highway. When active, there will be highway signage, or motorists can receive an alert by signing up through CDOT’s www.COtrip.org website.

When the traction law is active, it requires that all vehicles on state highways fit one of these categories: four-wheel/all-wheel drive; equipped with a traction device such as chains; or have snow tires or tires with mud and snow designation.

In addition, all tire tread must be at least 3/16 of an inch in depth.

“The deeper the tread, the better the

snow traction,” said John Tracey, owner of South Park Tire and Automotive Center in Littleton.

But that doesn’t mean everyone needs to replace their current snow tires to be able to get around this winter, Tracey said.

“Many tires are being thrown away before their lifespan,” Tracey added.

To make sure your tires aren’t being discarded before they’re worn, have them checked first to ensure they’re adequate for winter weather, Tracey said. Tires have a small notch, known as a wear bar, built in for selfchecking, Tracey said. But any tire shop can also measure the tread for those who are unfamiliar with doing it themselves and/or want an expert’s accuracy.

Tracey also recommends that everyone consult with a tire dealer to discuss what type of tire would meet their specific winter driving needs.

For example, Tracey services a lot of seniors who are retired, he said. They may only need a front-wheel-drive car with all-season tires, Tracey said, because they might be able to avoid driving in the snow and ice altogether by staying home during a storm and waiting until after the streets are plowed.

But on the other hand, there are skiand-snowboard enthusiasts who need to travel safely in the mountains every weekend.

“It would be crazy” and unsafe for them not to have their vehicle properly equipped for inclement weather, he said.

Additional precautions on I-70 CDOT states that “the I-70 mountain corridor is one of Colorado’s most highly traveled corridors … and the corridor is also frequently subject to dangerous winter weather driving conditions.”

This is why I-70 is being targeted for

the newest rules of Colorado’s traction law, Hogle said.

Beginning on Sept. 1 this year and continuing to May 31, 2020, the traction law will be active for all motorists traveling I-70 from Morrison to Dotsero.

This means that in this 126-mile stretch all winter, every vehicle must be traction law compliant as explained above, or be carrying chains, cables or an alternative traction device at all times.

“A single car spinout can cause a holdup for a couple hundred vehicles,” Hogle said. “We see accidents that could’ve been avoided happen all the time.”

If not compliant with the law, fines can range from $130 for just not being compliant — inadequate tread on snow tires and no alternate traction device, for example — to $650 if the non-compliancy caused a traffic event such as a crash.

Colorado State Patrol will be enforcing the law, Hogle said. For the first year, it will be a secondary offense, Hogle said, such as if you were pulled over for speeding and the state trooper found that the vehicle was additionally not in compliance with the law.

‘Bow to the Plow’ No matter what street you’re driving on, all motorists need to understand the new snowplow law. Being dubbed “Bow to the Plow,” it means simply: Don’t pass a working snowplow.

“If they’re out there doing their work,” Hogle said, “it means there’s icy and snowy conditions. A little patience goes a long way.”

If snowplows are not working, they’re just like any other vehicle, Hogle said, and it’s OK to pass them on the left. Drivers can recognize a working snowplow because its blue lights will be flashing, and often there will be two of them in tandem, Hogle said.

A few of these include making sure windshield wipers, headlights and brakes are working properly, as well as having a flashlight and extra batteries; an extra set of warm clothes such as a coat, hat and mittens; water and non-perishable food; a first-aid kit; and jumper cables in case of an emergency.

“Hopefully you’ll never need them, but it’s better to be prepared,” Hogle said. “It’s not just mountain driving that can be hazardous. Be smart about being on the road.”

hildren sang Christmas carols and vendors’ booths lined the way at a garden center just outside of suburban neighborhoods in west Centennial.

It was all part of the first Holiday Art Market at Big Tool Box and Highlands Garden Center at 8080 S. Holly St. Artist Tania Rustage, who lives in the Lone Tree-Highlands Ranch area, created the event with a fellow artist.

It took place the first three days of November, and Rustage said she was

impressed with the turnout.

“Everyone’s been happy,” Rustage said on the market’s first day. “A lot of people have said they needed something like this on this side of town.”

Amid the fabrics, ornaments and other works on display, Dawn Swanbom’s stood out: scented lotion she makes from goat milk.

“Once they sample the product, they’re pretty amazed,” Swanbom, 58, said about customers’ reactions. The Greeley-area resident has farmed goat milk for about seven years, she said.

“I always joke that my philosophy is to get people hooked on it,” Swanbom said.

fter the Douglas County School District released students about an hour early Tuesday, Oct. 29 due to inclement weather, some students took the opportunity to hit the slopes — or at least the hills.

About 15 kids and parents, bundled up to their ears, gathered at Wildcat

Ridge Park shortly after school let out and tried out the snowy hillside.

Some kids tried sledding backwards, in pairs and even without a sled at all. There were races, tumbles and lots of laughs on the hill in spite of record low temperatures for this time of year.

After a few hours of sledding, as things slowed down and hands got numb, most families headed in for a warm dinner.

Find a handyman, a financial adviser, a lawyer and more at the Highlands Ranch Adult Health and Information Fair.

More than 80 service providers will gather to provide information on multiple topics from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Recreation Center at Eastridge, 9568 S. University Blvd., Highlands Ranch.

In addition, a variety of screenings will be offered including blood pressure checks, glucose checks, spinal and posture screenings, and Reiki massages. Walgreens will offer flu shots and free medication reviews.

Slew of south metro teams advance in soccer STAFF REPORT

Cherry Creek, the second-seeded team among the 32 in the boys Class 5A state soccer playoffs, advanced into the second round with a 4-0 victory over Fort Collins on Nov. 1.

The Bruins scored three times in the second half to secure the win over the 31st seeded Lambkins and moved into the second round, which was scheduled to be played Nov. 6.

Quarterfinals are set for Nov. 9, with the 5A semifinals on tap for Nov. 13 at Echo Park Stadium in Parker and the championship match scheduled for Nov. 15 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.

Other south metro teams moving

on were defending state champion Arapahoe, Regis Jesuit, Grandview, Castle View and Rock Canyon.

Sam Myers’ overtime goal lifted Arapahoe, seeded 12th, to a 2-1 win over No. 21 Rangeview.

Regis Jesuit, the sixth seed, rolled to a 6-0 win over 27th seeded Bear Creek. Senior Luke Galan had three goals to spark the victory and Casey McCloskey had a goal and two assists for the Raiders.

Seventh-seeded Grandview, last season’s state runners-up, got a second half goal from Ivan Luna to eliminate No. 26 Poudre 1-0.

Castle View, the 10th seed, got goals from Cooper Landry and Tiernan Freiberger and posted a 2-0 win over No. 23 Eaglecrest. Junior

Rock Canyon, seeded 14th, advanced with a shootout win over 19th seeded Valor Christian. The teams ended 0-0 in regulation time and overtime, but the Jaguars won the shootout, 5-4.

Broomfield, the ninth seed, ended the season for No. 24 seed Douglas County, 3-1, and No. 28 Mountain Vista lost 3-2 in overtime at fifth seed Boulder.

In the Class 4A playoffs, Ponderosa and Littleton lost first-round matches.

Air Academy, seeded fifth, ousted No. 28 Ponderosa , 3-1, and top seeded Battle Mountain downed No. 32 Littleton 4-0.

utheran has announced it will have a varsity girls softball team that will compete next fall, and the move has led to discussions about next season’s playing status — mostly of one particular player.

Junior Katie Dack-Howell, a student at Lutheran, has played softball for Rock Canyon for the past three seasons and is one of the state’s best 5A players. But she played this season under a cloud of uncertainty regarding whether she can finish her OVERTIME prep softball career as a senior member of the Rock Canyon team, play 3A softball with a new Lutheran program or not play at all.

Lutheran didn’t have a softball program, so under state Jim Benton rule CRS 22-32-165.5, Dack-Howell could seek participation opportunities at a school in her school district of residence or her school district of attendance.

Dack-Howell, who has committed to play softball at Texas A&M and won the shot put and discus state championship last spring for Lutheran, lives in the Rock Canyon attendance area, and since Lutheran previously did not have a softball team, she played for the past three seasons at Rock Canyon.

The Colorado High School Activities Association follows state laws, so when Lutheran adds a softball program, then Dack-Howell and other students from Lutheran who might have played for other schools would be required by state law to return and play for Lutheran.

Rock Canyon softball coach Mike Desimone, Katie’s parents, CHSAA and Lutheran have had discussions.

Katie’s parents are planning to appeal.

Here’s what some of those involved had to say: “One of the problems we face is nobody wants to be negative toward CHSAA or put administrators in a tough position,” said Desimone.

“Nobody is looking to do that. The life we live today is complicated and there are circumstances that require us as adults to look a little deeper and understand the situation to give kids the best opportunity available to them.

“It is unfortunate to put a kid in that position as a senior. I understand if you are a freshman, you might have to switch.

That’s a chance you take but you still have the lion’s share of your softball career in high school. Doing this to a senior — because it is unrealistic to expect her to play 3A because she is one of the best players in the country, let alone the state — asking that player to play at a lower level is not fair to the other players, it’s not fair for her. That’s why I feel an appeal process is necessary.”

Katie’s mother, Jamie, pointed out that Rock Canyon will lose six seniors and four starters off this season’s team and that they are not filing an appeal for an athletic advantage.

“We’re not trying to put Katie in a better situation,” said Katie’s mother “We’re just asking to finish what she started.”

CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green countered with two rebuttals and feels the focus and celebration should be on Lutheran for establishing a girls softball team.

“My answer is the state statutes are clear that if your school offers a program that

you participate at that school, which I 100% agree with because you are a student first,” she said.

Her second reason is that all softball players who attend Lutheran should want to be a part of a grassroots start-up team, help establish a program and be a representative of their school.

Lutheran has hired former Chaparral assistant Glen Maestretti as its first head coach, and the school has no thoughts of demanding that Katie would not finish her softball career at Rock Canyon.

“We are not out to disrupt anything,” said Lutheran Athletic Director Mark Duitsman. “We simply want what’s best for our students while also making decisions about what’s best for our school.

“We do have a number of current students who play softball at other schools, and we have been and continue to be their biggest fans whether they are playing for Lutheran or for a different school. We are here to serve and support our students and community and that will always be a core value for us.”

Junior Kalen Shoemaker of Legend completed 21 of 40 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns in a 36-34 football win over Doherty on Oct. 25.

Senior Blake Rarog rushed for 103 yards and caught seven passes for 130 yards in the game.

Lutheran senior Payton Brgoch had 11 kills, a 64.7 kills percentage and a .529 hit percentage in a 3-0 volleyball sweep over St. Mary’s Academy on Oct. 24.

Junior Clay Nanke of Regis Jesuit had three sacks, five quarterback hurries and nine total tackles in a 41-21 football win over Fountain Fort Carson on Oct. 25.

Jake Rubley, a junior quarterback for Highlands Ranch, connected on 10 of 20 passes for 243 yards and two TDs in a 3528 football win over Mountain Vista on Oct. 25.

The Heritage football team downed Gateway, 42-6, on Oct. 31, and in the past seven games the Eagles have scored an average of 47.7 points per contest and have gone 6-1 in those games.
