Meet Kory Nelson, candidate for Douglas County School Board

Parker resident Kory Nelson has filed with the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office as a candidate for Douglas County School Board director for District F. The region encompasses Parker and nearby unincorporated areas.

Nelson was born and raised in Fremont, Nebraska, where his parents worked as public school teachers.

He served in the Army prior to receiving a degree from the Sandra Nelson Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. He’s been a prosecutor for the City and County of Denver for 30 years.

Nelson’s wife, Kim, works as a reading recovery literacy specialist for the Douglas County School District, and his daughter, Alyssa, is a junior at Legend High School in Parker. The two of them, he said, are the reason he’s running for a seat on the school board.

“I’ve been passionate about this because the two most important people in my life are in these schools every day,” Nelson said.

His priorities for the school district are first and foremost safety, teacher retention and parent engagement with the school board.

He plans to spend the months leading up to the November election engaging with the community.

“I’m going to be knocking on a lot of doors, talking to a lot of parents and teachers who will talk to me,” Nelson said. “I think we’ve got great bones for a good school system, but I think we can do better.”

Meek, who was born and raised in Florida, double-majored in international business and management, with a minor in French, at James Madison University, and received an MBA in business economics and public policy from George Washington University.

Meek is the director of strategic b engagement and communications p at the Colorado Association of s School Boards. Her role includes working with administrators and S school boards across the state.

Her priorities for the district include: ensuring safe and welcoming schools with stable teaching and learning environments, ensuring equitable learning opportunities for all students and ensuring the focus is on all kids.

She plans on spending the next few months engaging with the community.

“I’m certainly encouraging everyone to reach out and share their views of where they think the district should be headed,” Meek said.

Meek was employed with DCSD from 2005-11, during which she created the Apple Awards teacher recognition program, developed the Digital Educator Program for teacher profesMeek sional development and launched the Girls and Women in Sports Luncheon. She was a spokeswoman for the district from 2009-11, and she ran for the school board in 2011.

Meek served as president of Eldorado Elementary School’s parent teacher organization and chair of the school accountability committee at Northridge Elementary School. Her two children attended the Highlands Ranch schools and graduated from ThunderRidge High School.

“Given my passion for public education and serving,” Meek said, “I really can’t imagine a better volunteer role for me at this time in my life.”

Vogel will not seek reelection

Douglas County School Board Director Wendy Vogel will not be running for reelection this November, she announced in a public Facebook post on July 26.

“It has been my privilege to serve in this capacity for the last 4 years,” she wrote in the post. “I am incred- Vogel ibly proud of all that we have accomplished on behalf of the students and staff of DCSD. Thank you for entrusting and sup-

porting me in this role.”

In the post Vogel announced that she is supporting Susan Meek, a former DCSD spokeswoman who is running for Vogel’s seat, District A, which covers western Highlands Ranch.

“Susan has been a mentor to me, someone from whom I have sought counsel and guidance while serving on the school board,” Vogel wrote. “I am confident that she will continue the forward progress our board has made.”

Directors David Ray and AnneMarie Lemieux remain undecided on whether they plan to run for reelection, Ray said in an email correspondence.

5 things to know: Housing market flattening out Real estate boom settles down, ‘buyer’s market’ emerging

The Denver area’s real estate boom that saw rents and housing prices skyrocket in recent years is slowing down, experts say.

“It’s flattened out a lot,” said Jill Schafer, the head of the Denver Metro Association of Realtors’ Market Trends Committee. “It’s still a good market for sellers, but buyers are regaining a lot more leverage.”

Here are five things to know: Inventory is up Inventory of homes for sale is way up, with 9,520 homes for sale in the metro area in July — an increase of 28% over last year, and a level not seen since 2013, before the latest boom.

Increasing the supply side of the equation eases the frenzy among buyers, Schafer said.

“We’re seeing far fewer multipleoffer situations,” she said.

Prices are holding steady, with the median housing price of $428,000 up just 1.9% over last year.

That’s below the ideal appre-

ciation rate of 3% to 5% per year, Schafer said, but eases the pressure on buyers after years of sometimes double-digit growth rates.

It also loosens up the market for sellers, she said.

“A lot of people didn’t want to sell because they didn’t know where to go,” Schafer said. “It locked up the market. But now, they have places to go.”

Starter homes still lag The market for starter homes is still tight, Schafer said, because much of the new inventory is still high-priced stock.

That’s thanks to a convergence of market conditions, she said: Land in the metro area is expensive, and tariffs imposed on raw materials

by President Trump are driving up construction costs. Further, high demand for contractors means they can name high prices, Schafer said.

The result, Schafer said, is that there’s little motivation for developers to build starter homes. The majority of starter home building is in places like Denver, which offers subsidies to build lower-cost homes.

Condo construction is starting to tick back up after years of underbuilding, Schafer said, which may be an outcome of a 2017 law meant to ease the burden on builders imposed by a 2005 law that made it

easier to sue condo builders.

Just asking...

Price reductions are becoming more common, Schafer said, with high-end homes seeing the biggest shift.

Homes priced between $1.5 million and $1.75 million are being sold for 91% of asking price on average, Schafer said. Starter homes and lower-end homes are selling for much closer to asking price.

“There are sellers who overvalue their homes,” Schafer said. “They’re paying attention to automated websites. Those sites don’t know if you’re on a busy street or the condition of the property.”

The slowdown means it’s more important than ever for sellers to enlist the help of a professional, Schafer said.

“People can’t price like they could two years ago,” Schafer said. “For a long time, people didn’t have to do anything to their house and it would sell. Now, you really need to get the place in shape first. It can take months of work to get the highest price.”

Great time for buyers, but beware The increase in housing inventory is good news for buyers especially when coupled with still-low mortgage interest rates, Schafer said.

That said, there are still perils to look out for.

An experienced real estate agent can recognize red flags, Schafer said, like fix-and-flip properties that have been done poorly, or multi-unit projects that are in trouble.

“Certain builders are way behind estimated delivery dates because of the lack of contractors,” Schafer said.

On the flip side, some projects have too much inventory building up, in some cases because builders are overpricing homes. In some places, that’s because landscaping or accompanying commercial developments are way behind schedule.

Expect more scrapes Though Denver has outlawed the construction of slot homes — jamming multiple-unit structures into single-family home neighborhoods — communities can expect more scrape-off homes, where builders demolish an older home and replace it with a new home that’s often far larger.

“Buyers love new,” Schafer said.

“They want the latest and greatest.

You’d think with all these fix-’emup shows on TV about old homes, people would want to go that way, but they don’t. They’re willing to pay for something modern.”

Wastewater operator for Centennial Water & Sanitation District About me I grew up in the Quad Cities in Illinois. I have a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Illinois State University. I ended up in Colorado because I was on my way to California and stopped here for a night and just never left.

After I moved here, I had a friend who worked for Denver Water. She really liked her job and it seemed like a great career to get into, so I started looking into it and got a job at the Denver Water lab. I worked at Denver Water for just under a year when I applied for and got the job at Centennial Water & Sanitation District in 2016.

On the job I like the spontaneity of it — no day is ever the same. Some days I’m in the lab working on the microscope and others I’m operating the plant.

I want the community to know that this is not the easiest job. We have no control over what comes into the plant and yet we have to treat it to the best of our capabili-

ties. Everyone here always does their best and makes sure that what leaves the plant is of the highest quality, but it is an essential job that keeps the community at its best.

Working in a predominantly male industry For the most part, it’s a nonissue.

All of my immediate coworkers treat me just like anyone else. However, in the beginning, I did have to be more assertive with some to show I couldn’t be pushed around or ignored.

It hasn’t always been easy and I have had to deal with some issues, and I had to figure out the best way to handle the situations with the men I work with. Despite all of that though, I believe I have proven myself and am gaining respect in this organization and field.

What I would tell other females I would tell young females to go for it! Not just for the water and wastewater industry, but for all STEM industries. Things are getting better and the stigma around women is diminishing. The more women that get into the industry, the better it will be for everyone.

Back to school at DCSD: Five things to know

So long, sweet summertime: The Douglas County School District welcomes most students back on Aug. 7. That date may differ for DCSD charter schools and kindergarten programs, and parents are encouraged to confirm the date for their child or children.

To ease some of the usual, backto-school stress, we’ve provided five changes for families to be aware of.

Get the app DCSD recently launched a mobile app, dubbed “Douglas County SD,” which can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Targeted to parents, students and staff, the app makes it easy to access calendar events, news, district communications, lunch menus, school contact information, weather notifications and more.

Tip: Enable push notifications to be notified of any recent updates.

More counselors Douglas County schools will see more mental health resources

thanks to a $40 million mill levy override passed by voters last November. Of that amount, $6 million has gone toward hiring 85 additional counselors.

At the start of the school year, each elementary school will have a counselor, and the ratio in middle and high schools will improve from one counselor per 350 students to one counselor per 250 students.

Construction Also passed by voters last November was a $250 million bond, which is going toward critical building repairs, new construction and safety measures.

Upcoming projects include a 25,000-square-foot addition to Castle View High School in Castle Rock, which is over capacity by more than 360 students. The $13.2 million project is expected to begin this December and be completed by December 2020, according to district documents.

Keeping Colorado’s aerospace industry booming and competitive will require creative approaches to education, officials at Lockheed Martin told Ivanka Trump, senior White House adviser and the president’s daughter, on July 22.

The aerospace giant is facing recruitment challenges in the face of a wave of retiring baby boomers and an insufficient number of graduates with science degrees, Heather Erickson, Lockheed’s director of talent and organizational capability, told Trump.

“We’re looking at accelerating talent development for today, not tomorrow,” Erickson said, touting the Jefferson County defense contractor’s apprenticeship programs and blooming partnership with Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Trump visited the facility as part of a national tour for the White House’s “Pledge to America’s Workers” initiative, which seeks to encourage states, universities and companies to work together to develop apprenticeships and workforce training programs.

discussion with Lockheed leaders, local elected officials and internship participants before touring the sprawling facility near Chatfield State Park.

Lockheed’s signature skills development program is the Advanced Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Program, or AMTAP, said Sarah Turner, the program’s manager.

AMTAP helps create a “career pipeline” for participants by certifying

them in a variety of manufacturing skills, Turner said.

That’s crucial, Turner said, because “the ability to afford a four-year degree is increasingly difficult” for many students, with many increasingly turning to trade schools and community colleges.

Trump said America’s booming economy with record-low unemployment offers a natural time to innovate and collaborate on training programs.

“The private sector has to tell us what skills are in demand,” Trump said. “And we need to make sure skills in tech schools are aligned with those demands.”

Relay For Life set for Highlands Ranch Aug. 17 event raises money for cancer research

An event later this month offers a chance to have fun while supporting a worthy cause.

Relay For Life of South Metro Denver is coming up on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 5-10 p.m. at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch, 3270 Redstone Park Circle. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the event honors survivors and loved ones lost to cancer and raises money for cancer research.

As of July 23, $28,036 had been collected.

The festival-like experience has an activity for everyone: a kickboxing demo, zumba class, life-sized yard games, a DJ, a kid-friendly obstacle course and more.

During the relay, team members take turns walking around a track or designated path. Each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps, says American Cancer Soci-

ety’s website. This year’s theme laps include superheroes and “the power of purple,” which signifies cancer survivors.

The day closes with a luminaria ceremony, where small paper bags honoring loved ones lost are released into the night sky.

“Each light represents a life — a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or support for a person still fighting the disease,” said Janet Corona, of Aurora, a cancer survivor in remission who is helping coordinate the relay. “It’s a powerful demonstration that gives people the opportunity to grieve but also offers comfort and hope.”

The decades-old tradition was started by Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt, who walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer. Today the race takes place annually in communities across the country, to date raising nearly $5 billion for cancer research.

Parade means fair is on way

hildren dashed into the street to grab candy. Friends shouted and cheered from the sidewalk for those they knew on the many floats. Local officials and business owners waved to the crowds. And there was no shortage of fun at the 2019 Douglas County Fair Parade in downtown Castle Rock.

The event wound through streets lined with lawn chairs and people standing wherever they could. More than 75 entries ranging from bands to businesses to fair organizations kept the event lively. Presented by the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce, the parade is the annual kickoff to the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo, which begins with a full schedule on Aug. 1.

Lauren Riendeau held her 1-yearold daughter, Maddie, on her shoulders as her husband, Austin, and 4-year-old son, Hayden, watched the parade nearby. Riendeau graduated from high school in Castle Rock but moved away for a number of years.

The couple moved back when they had children.

They were enjoying their second time attending the parade, she said as an excited and smiling Hayden shouted from the sidewalk to parade floats, “Give me candy!�

Centennial Alfalfa’s Market timeline remains unclear

Plans to remake a vacant big-box store in Centennial as an organic, local-minded grocer still have yet to hit the construction stage, and when the project will move forward is unclear.

“Alfalfa’s Market remains committed to the site located at 8101 S. Quebec St. in Centennial,” Troy Smith, Alfalfa’s development director, said in a statement. “We continue to assess costs, design and the timeframe for this project. I know people are looking forward to Alfalfa’s coming into their neighborhood, and we are being very diligent with our store layout and design.”

The Boulder-based grocer, whose two locations sit in that city and nearby Louisville, would break into the Denver metro area market at the south edge of Centennial near the Willow Creek neighborhood.

“As Alfalfa’s expands into new markets, we want to ensure that our customers receive the best locally owned, organic and sustainable shopping experience,” Smith said.

The grocery store, whose website touts its support of “innovative food, wellness products and culinary creations,” could revamp the former U.S. Toy building on South Quebec Street near East County Line Road.

The property sold for $4.2 million, according to county assessor data, in May 2018.

Shortly after, Centennial City Council approved a plan that June to give the store a $500,000 sales tax rebate, paid over a maximum of 10 years.

The move is part of the city’s “Retail Reinvestment Strategy,” a general pivot toward recognizing the trend of experiential uses. That’s a term for services, such as restaurant dining, that consumers can’t get online.

Timing has been delayed by Alfalfa’s, “but the building owner (has) noted they are committed to the project,” said Allison Wittern, city spokeswoman.

The city’s agreement based on the sales tax rebate is still in effect, Wittern said. It’s an effort to help fill a vacant space with “a unique retailer that fills a neighborhood need and brings renewed retailer and consumer interest to the area, which can benefit the surrounding community, businesses and shopping centers,” Wittern said.

The city expects to gain in sales- and property-tax revenue and attract grocery spending from non-Centennial residents, a report by city staff said.

The tax rebate the city promised isn’t free money — Alfalfa’s would be required to remodel the building’s exterior much more thoroughly and according to its proposed design.

The project would remodel a roughly 30,000-square-foot building, of which Alfalfa’s would occupy about 24,000 square feet. Two existing businesses — Biryani Pot, an Indian restaurant, and Spa Brokers, a seller of hot tubs, saunas and fireplaces — occupy the rest. The project aims for a trendier exterior with repainted walls and a veneer-wood accent. A main draw could be a “community meeting” area with a multi-use outdoor space, interior café or community room, and a demo or prep kitchen for culinary classes and educational events, according to the city’s agreement with the developer.

Centennial considers tax incentives for significant projects that will have a positive impact on the community, the city has said.

City council also approved an incentive agreement for a new Natural Grocers on East Arapahoe Road near South Peoria Street in 2017. The monetary amount for Alfalfa’s is in line with projects of similar size and scale, the city has said.

Schomp MINI hosts pediatric burn survivors Ice cream social offers space for families to connect

The smell of warm, buttery popcorn wafted through the air as children of all ages trickled into the elegant showroom of Schomp MINI in northern Highlands Ranch. They collected pizza and ice cream, paired with an assortment of toppings, before sitting with their families at round tables.

The children have one thing in common: they were once pediatric burn patients at the Children’s Hospital Colorado Burn Center.

They gathered that evening to connect over their experiences at the Children’s Hospital Burn Camps Program, created in 1983 to assist patients and families in the physical and emotional recovery process.

“That was an experience that really helped us get through the whole situation,” said Larry Medina, who attended a burn camp with his son, Logan, who at 9 months old suffered burns to 60 percent of his body from an accident in the kitchen. “We met other families who were going through similar situations, and we

Schomp has been active with Children’s Hospital since 1986, the year of the first downtown Littleton Ralph Schomp Fire Truck Parade and Muster, in collaboration with

Mile High Hook and Ladder, a club of firefighters and fire truck collectors.

In 1990, the club grew the annual event to include a fundraiser benefiting Children’s Hospital Burn Center.

All joking aside, brace yourself for puns

hen Chopin — one of my favorites — died, he began to decompose.

No one is born with a sense of humor, and you can’t order one online. Some people are funny and some people aren’t.

Some people who think they are funny, aren’t.

One of my sister’s husbands thought he was funny. Being around him was painful. I had to bite my tongue.

His jokes about German sausages were the wurst.

He said he worked at a bakery because he “kneaded the dough.”

This isn’t going to get any better. My friend Barb Dwyer sent me a bunch of puns, and now that I am through

groaning, I thought I would pass them on to you.

There is no such thing as a “funny bone.” Your upper arm bone, however, is called the “humerus,” a homophone of “humorous.”

But tibia honest with you, I know a skeleton who can Craig Marshall predict bad weather.

All seriousness aside, I took a communism class in college. I am afraid I didn’t do very well. I got bad Marx.

QUIET DESPERATION

I had a beard in college. After all, it was the 1960s. I didn’t like it at first, but it grew on me.

I met a girl the other day who said she recognized me from a vegetarian club, but I’ve never met herbivore.

When E.T. finally made it back home, his mother said, “Where on Earth have you been?” Isn’t that just like a mother?

My mother once ordered 2,000 pounds of Chinese soup. It was won ton.

I couldn’t remember how to throw a boomerang, but eventually it came back to me.

When we met, I told Jennifer, “I’m no photographer, but I can picture us together.”

I told her, “I was once caught stealing a calendar. I got twelve months.”

A friend of mine is a mathematician. Ironically, he’s afraid of negative numbers, and he will stop at nothing to avoid them.

I wrote something for the stage about puns. It’s a play on words.

I just found out I’m colorblind. The news came out of the purple.

I went to see the doctor because I thought I was invisible. The nurse came out and told me, “The doctor can’t see you know.”

On the way out of the clinic, I heard two doctors joking about sutures.

They had each other in stitches.

Results needed on school safety What happened to the days when kids could freely come and go to school, be instructed on reading, writing and arithmetic with teachers responsible for teaching, testing and grading? It wasn’t complicated, but now we’ve got professionals calling for metal detectors, roaming security guards (SROs) and counselors who want children to openly discuss their mental health. We’ve also got a school board that hired a superintendent for the sole purpose of selling a tax increase for a $250 million bond in 2018 but now can’t afford to match the county’s requirement for $3 million matching funds for security.

Sometimes we get so caught up in either one or the other, it’s our success or our perceived failure.

And it’s not until we are reminded to consciously think about it that we remember that the two really do go hand in hand.

And all too often our perceived failures become our realities. You might agree that when that perception becomes our reality, maintaining our motivation and enthusiasm becomes hard, and even harder with each failed attempt.

A failed attempt is exactly what it is, a failed attempt. It is not failure at all, it’s just one more opportunity to test our enthusiasm and resiliency. I don’t know about you, but if I have a failed attempt at anything, I just can’t wait to try again. A lost sale? Show me the next prospect.

A missed basket? Give me the ball again. A sliced drive? I’ll take it as I am hitting three off the tee. I just can’t wait to get back in the game.

It’s a sense of wanting to try again, it’s a feeling that even

though we lost or made a mistake, we ask to be put back in the game or we put ourselves back in the game.

Failure isn’t failing, its actually just putting us back in a position to want whatever it is we failed at or lost even more. It WINNING drives us to a place WORDS of fortitude.

Now, if the “it” is something we do not have passion for or a task or event where we were half-hearted from the beginning, that is a different story. Beif we think Michael Norton cause we failed there, we didn’t. I say that because if we are not connected to the outcome physically, spiritually, or emotionally, then it was just something we tried and nothing more. No failure here.

A fighter doesn’t lose a fight because they get knocked down, they lose a fight because they stay down.

As we go through life, we are going to get knocked down. We will get knocked down at work, at

Grandparents and grandchildren — conversations between generations “Young people need something stable to hang on to — a culture connection, a sense of their own past, a hope for their own future. Most of all, they need what grandparents can give them.”

The role of a grandparent is often versatile and everevolving as the child grows older and expresses different interests and needs.

To children, grandparents can be mentors, chefs, historians, artists, coaches, confidants, playmates, storytellers and so much more.

Due to medical advances, people are living longer and healthier lives, increasing the number of grandparents in the world and creating more opportunities for deeper and enduring intergenerational bonds between the generations. The impact and difference a grandparent can make in a child’s life is invaluable and can sometimes be underestimated due to ageist beliefs.

Grandparents should not underestimate the effect they can have on their grandchildren and the valuable role they play in their family.

Stories passed down among the generations are often divided into three categories: directive, social bonding, and personal identity. Directive stories are often those that convey feelings of regret about past mistakes or missed opportunities, relaying the age-old adage of “don’t do what I did.” These help children learn from their elders’ past mistakes and how they can apply these lessons in their own lives. Social bonding stories revolve around happier memories, often centering around family traditions, celebrations and shared interests. These stories teach children

When we get knocked down or slowed down — and it will happen — I hope that we will remember that failed attempts are awesome. They are never a reason to quit — they are the exact opposite, failed attempts are the reason we push forward, they are the fuel behind our passion and drive to succeed.

These conversations between generations are often sparked by activities they’re doing together, whether it be passing down family recipes while baking together, sharing stories behind photographs while scrapbooking, or demonstrating how they coped with the loss of a baseball game while playing catch together. So, if you’re wondering where to start with the types of stories or lessons you want to pass on to your grandchildren, it can be helpful to first determine what activities you’re both interested in and go from there.

They cost us only our time, our memories, our creativity. They can inspire us, protect us, and bind us to others. So be generous with your stories, and be generous in your stories. Remember that your children may have them for a lifetime.”

The chew yonder Edible and medicinal plants can be found growing around metro area

ost people would look at a backyard filled with weeds and see a problem. Kate Armstrong sees a feast.

Armstrong is an urban forager — someone versed in wild edible and medicinal plants of the urban environment. She leads nature walks and seminars that teach people a new way to look at the plants in their midst.

“People are astonished when they find out how much food is all around us,” Armstrong said. “Nature isn’t here to hurt us, it’s here to give us everything we need.”

Indeed, in the course of a short stroll through a Lakewood back yard, Armstrong pointed out dozens of plants growing in sidewalk cracks or along fences with uses ranging from salad greens to treating toothache.

There are very few toxic plants in our region, Armstrong said. Most plants are technically edible, it’s just that most don’t taste very good.

For novice foragers, though, Armstrong recommends a few highly common — and highly tasty — plants that abound throughout the Denver area.

There’s purslane, a low-growing weed with thick leaves and meaty stems, which can be eaten raw in a salad, fried in stir-fry, used as a soup thickener, or pickled.

Also abundant is mallow, a roundleafed weed that also makes a good snack when eaten raw, but also provides chewy seedpods that Armstrong calls “cheeses.” The stems can be roasted and eaten like pretzel sticks, she said, and the bigger leaves can be used as mini-serving trays for hors d’oeuvres.

Lamb’s quarter grows in moist, disturbed soil, and produces leaves with a mild, lettuce-like taste. A single lamb’s quarter plant can provide months of salad greens by snipping off tender young leaves, Armstrong said.

Dandelion greens are best eaten raw, Armstrong said, and are excellent for detoxing the body.

Even bindweed, the bane of so many gardeners and lawn lovers, produces tiny white flowers with a delicate, floral taste that make an elegant garnish in a salad, Armstrong said.

Only a couple plants common in our region are poisonous, Armstrong said.

One is hemlock, which grows in moist soil and produces spindly, wispy leaves that are hard to tell apart from carrot tops. The other is death camas, which looks similar to wild onion or wild

Burger said. “We’re starting to move past our diets of overly processed foods. It’s empowering to feed yourself or heal yourself from things in your landscape. These are things our ancestors knew, and they still work today.”

Purslane, a common garden weed, tastes great in stir-fries. garlic, but doesn’t have their characteristic savory odor.

A more common problem, Armstrong said, is herbicides and pesticides. Urban foragers should try to ensure that the place they’re gathering from hasn’t been sprayed to keep weeds and bugs down, she said. That’s easy in your own back yard, but when foraging along roadsides or other wilder places, a key is to watch out for areas with monocultures — where only one type of plant is abundant.

That’s often a sign that sprays are in use.

The safest bet, Armstrong said, is to let your own yard go wild, which will also help it become a haven for pollinators and other wildlife.

“This can be a really fun hobby, and a great way to reconnect with nature,” Armstrong said. “And, who knows? If push comes to shove, it’s knowledge that could come in handy.”

Hit the trails Beyond the back yard, Colorado provides all sorts of edible goodies, said Blake Burger, a horticulturist with the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Bindweed flowers have a delicate floral taste.

C, Burger said, and make a tasty tea, or an addition to herb butters or marinades for fish and chicken.

Currant berries are plentiful in the region, Burger said, and make delicious syrups and jams.

Rose hips, the pink or red seedpods left behind after the flower dies, are also high in vitamin C and make a distinctive sour, floral tea.

It’s important to harvest wild edibles ethically and consciously, Burger said.

As a rule of thumb, try not to gather more than 10% from a single plant, or from a patch of plants.

Interest in wild edible plants is growing, Burger said. He leads the Denver Botanic Gardens’ new herbalism certificate program, which covers how to use a variety of wild and cultivated plants for health and medicine.

Burger, like Armstrong, is tied into the flourishing community of urban foragers in the Denver area. There’s a lot of activity in the subculture these days, Burger said, with classes around the metro area filling up quickly.

“I think people are starting to experience a shift in their vision, and are realizing natural is the way to go,”

Do it right While Burger and Armstrong said the best place to forage is on land you or someone you know owns, so you can be sure of herbicide use, it’s possible to forage in other environs.

There’s no specific rule against gathering wild edibles in most of the parks in the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District, said Skot Latona, who manages South Platte Park in Littleton. It’s against the rules to gather in South Platte Park itself, though.

While gathering a few berries or leaves isn’t going to get you busted, Latona said, “the behavior would be judged on observed damage to park property. Don’t go digging up roots, disturbing soil or removing entire species.”

Wild edibles are everywhere in South Suburban properties, said Victoria Sutton, an interpreter at South Platte Park, including wild asparagus, chokecherries and wild plums.

But, she said, consider your impact on your fellow animals when you forage, Sutton said.

“It’s fun to take a nibble here and there, but those plants can be a matter of life and death for wildlife in our area,” Sutton said. “Don’t go hauling basketfuls of material out of parks.”

Even for those not hitting the trails, there should be lots to munch on this year in back yards alone, Burger said.

“It was a wet spring, and plants are delayed in their growth, but strong” Burger said. “If you’re going to get into urban foraging, this is a good year for it.”

‘The Tradition Continues’ Community celebration is summertime hit in Littleton

ittleton’s signature community celebration is back as the 91st Annual Western Welcome Week runs for 10 days from Aug. 9-18.

This year’s theme is “The Tradition Continues.”

Cindy Hathaway, executive director of Western Welcome Week, said the theme is fitting because the celebration is a staple of the community.

WWW is also such a longstanding tradition that it was registered as a Local Legacies event by Congress.

“The 100-year celebration seems like it will be here tomorrow because time goes by so fast,” Hathaway said in the leadup to this year’s event.

“Western Welcome Week continues to be a source of pride for generations here.”

While some traditions have come and gone though the years, Hathaway said it’s the parade that is the event highlight, occurring each year since the first WWW (then called “Homecoming”) was held in 1929 — and this year’s parade is expected to be as big as ever.

Hathaway said the parade’s 2019 grand marshal was selected in keeping with the theme of celebrating tradition — Mickey Kempf, of Bradford Auto Body. Kempf was chosen because of his family’s strong ties to Littleton and a tradition of carrying on the family name and serving the community well. Hathaway said Kempf carries on the commitment to community of his mother and stepfather, Mary and George “Brad” Bradford.

The Bradford family will also be represented in an old tradition being brought back. This year, the

duck race will return to the event lineup. Named the Bradford Duck Race, participants will be able to purchase a duck to race in Little’s Creek. The revived duck race in 2019 is presented by the Henry Design Group and sponsored by Meretta Law. The ducks will be released to race along the creek on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. Hathaway said the duck race has come and gone over the years, with the original races being held back in the 1970s.

Sean Swallow said he’s excited to have the duck race back this year as he recalled enjoying the tradition as a kid in 1979.

“It’s a great part of Western Welcome Week,” he said. “It’s so much fun. I remember as a kid chasing my duck down the river.”

Hathaway said naming the race after Brad and Mary Bradford is fitting because it honors the philanthropy and community fun that the Bradfords enjoyed.

Don’t forget the food Hathaway said as with every year, the food is a big part of the event, especially at this year’s 19th Taste of Western Welcome Week.

“We have so much beer, wine and food — this is truly a great event,” Hathaway said. “We highlight local restaurants and breweries, and for the price, you can’t beat this part of the celebration.”

Taste of Western Welcome Week is a fun, adultsonly event. Tickets are $25 in advance at the Western Welcome Week office, 5890 S. Bemis Street, and at Lewis & Cluck, 5664 S. Prince St. On the day of the event, ticket prices are $30. Price includes unlimited food and beverage tastes.

Some of this year’s participating breweries include C.B. & Potts Brewery, Chain Reaction Brewing Company, Jackass Hill Brewery and Living Dream. Restaurants serving food this year include C.B. & Potts Restaurant, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Platte River Bar & Grill and Romano’s.

Parade marshal Mickey Kempf proud of tradition of service Bradford Auto Body owner carries on legacy of altruism

Brad Bradford founded the shop in 1949, and Kempf, 69, took over the shop from his parents in 1980. While the shop has always stayed busy getting dents and dings out of cars, the family has always made time to give back.

“It makes you feel like what you do matters,” Kempf said. “It’s about protecting your fellow human beings.”

Some of Kempf ’s work carries a more evocative message: A few years back, he and Bob’s Towing exhibited a wrecked car at Arapahoe Community College as part of a driver education event, meant to demonstrate the potential consequences of distracted driving.

The purpose, Kempf said, was to remind drivers young and old to “Hang up and drive. We need you, and your phone call can wait.”

Kempf, a father of three and grandfather and great-grandfather to many, said he’s humbled and honored to be the parade’s Grand Marshal, and proud to be part of Littleton tradition.

“Anything my family can do to for our community,” Kempf said, “we’ll be there.”

There’s gold in that thar river Learn to pan like early prospectors at South Platte Park

Would-be prospectors can try their hand at gold panning as part of Western Welcome Week on Aug 10, with South Platte Park rangers teaching the finer points of one of Colorado’s oldest activities.

Yes, there’s still gold in the South Platte, said South Platte Park interpreter Victoria Sutton.

The Colorado Gold Rush of 1859 was set off after prospectors found gold dust in the Platte just downstream in Englewood, according to a plaque in Englewood’s Cushing Park, and modern-day panners can still find “color” in the river’s sandbars.

“Chances are you’ll find about as much gold as they found back

then, which is to say very little,” Sutton said as she swirled a pan in the Platte River on July 17.

“But it’s here, and that’s what told the prospectors that it was coming from somewhere upstream.”

Gold panning is pretty simple stuff, Sutton said, though it can take practice to get the technique down. She provided some pointers: First, scoop some sand from the riverbank into a gold pan, and dip the pan in the water. Give the pan a few gentle swirls to start separating the sediment, and toss out bigger rocks.

Next, go back and forth between swirling the pan — allowing water and sediment to splash out — and dipping it in the water to let lighter sediment float away.

Gold, being heavy, will stay at the bottom.

Gold, however, is not magnetic, so once the sediment is dry you can separate it from the magnetite with a refrigerator magnet.

IF YOU GO Western Welcome Week’s 24th annual Gold Panning on the Platte event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 10.

No registration is necessary for the free event, which will meet at Carson Nature Center in South Platte Park at 3000 West Carson Drive behind the Aspen Grove shopping center.

All ages are welcome. Drinking water will be provided, but no food. Participants are asked to wear water shoes — bare feet are not permitted in the river.

Participants get to take home any gold they find.

aren’t likely to find more than a few flakes, although one kid a few years ago found a beefy gold nugget, Sutton said.

The point of the activity isn’t to strike it rich, Sutton said, but to learn a new family-friendly way to enjoy South Platte Park’s beautiful stretch of the Platte.

“It’s a wonderful way to connect with nature,” Sutton said.

On Sunday, Aug. 11, children — from toddlers to 12-year-olds — will saddle up for the annual Stick Horse Stampede at Arapahoe Community College.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the stampede starts at 10 a.m.

On Saturday, Aug. 17, the children’s festivities will be capped off with the 39th South Metro Fire Fighter’s Children’s Parade at Bega Park, starting at 7:45 a.m.

Entertainment abounds In talking about this year’s lineup of activities, entertainment and fun, Hathaway said one of her favorite traditions of WWW is the RiverPointe Swing Dance, which is a 23-year tradition. The dance will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 13, starting at 6 p.m.

“This is one of my favorite events,” Hathaway said. “It’s truly a community celebration because you get all ages and all generations out there having a lot of fun.”

Brochures for Littleton’s annual Western Welcome Week celebration (which begins the morning of Aug. 9 and runs for 10 days through the afternoon of Aug. 18) are appearing around town, listing numerous events with themes of arts and music. Drag-racing plot thickens in thin air

eing a Colorado native, I am used to hearing about the effects of the high altitude.

It doesn’t matter if it is baseball, golf, tennis, football, basketball or any event you choose, because there will probably be some mention about the impact OVERTIME of the altitude.

The National Hot Rod Association came to Bandimere Speedway for the Mile High Nationals on July 19-21, and naturally the Jim Benton altitude forced adjustments that both the crews and drivers had to take into consideration.

Many teams only use parts specifically for Bandimere.

Crews have to deal with tuning, blower and piston changes, and the parachutes work but react different than at sea level. Drivers also have to adapt.

Funny car driver Tommy Johnson Jr., who once lived in Denver

for six months, says he comes to Colorado early each season and makes adjustments to get more sleep and makes sure he stays hydrated to help avoid fatigue.

Matt Hagan is a physical fitness enthusiast who drove the 2018 Charger Funny Car and jokes about having to climb stairs.

“I come early because I have to walk up the stairs and I’m sucking wind,” he said. “I don’t want anybody to see me sucking wind.

You have to get acclimated to the altitude.

“I work on my mental game a lot as far as being mentally and physical fit to drive the race car.

You have to be super focused up here. At the end of the week, I’m ready to get off the mountain.

You can’t get water fast enough.

It’s a challenge.”

Crews were tested all week.

“It’s a huge challenge but it’s fun because it’s the biggest challenge we face all year,” Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson told NHRA.com. “Everything is different. We basically lift the gas cap up and slide a new car underneath it. We change gear-

ing, suspensions and just about everything else you can change.”

Anderson won Mile High Nationals championship and talked about the effort it took from his team to win a Wally trophy at Bandimere.

“Everybody did their job and the car was flawless,” he said.

“This has been the only track I’ve been able to win at the past two years.

“It’s a neat challenge to come here. People don’t understand what you have to do with these great cars to perform at Bandimere.

“They are not built for racing here. We build these race cars for 1,400, 1,500 horsepower. The driver, because of the fact you lose 300 horsepower, you have to jam all kinds of gear ratios into the car to make it think it has more power. It makes a tough challenge for a driver and it takes three or four runs to get the driver in sync.”

Littleton golf editor David Jacobson is a Littleton golfer who can be found playing on courses in the area and

he also is the editor of the book “Nine Holes of Golf ” by Royal Cortissoz — a renowned architect, art critic and author of the first half of the 20th century.

“I believe the book will be of special interest to Denver suburban readers,” said Jacobson.

The book is a series of essays written by Cortissoz in 1922.

First responders make impactful trip for D-Day Marking 75 years since battle sends local men home with life lessons

t. Tommy Barrella, of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, vividly remembers his trip to France with the Colorado Emerald Society Pipe Band in June, where the musicians helped mark 75 years since the battle called D-Day began. There, the group of nearly 30 police and firefighters performed at more than a dozen remembrance ceremonies scheduled for the milestone anniversary.

As the band went from one event to the next, they saw local residents waving American flags in recognition of Americans’ role within the Allied troops before, during and after June 6, 1944, when soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II. By the battle’s end, an estimated 10,000 Allied troops were killed, wounded or missing.

Barrella, a base drummer in the band, was struck that decades later people from a different country took time to honor Allied soldiers. For others on the trip, it was a lesson in humility and respect for veterans. One thing they had in common — weeks later each were still beaming with pride and gratitude at having gone on what they called a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

He recently closed 30 years with South Metro Fire Rescue and is now fire chief for Front Range Fire Rescue in Weld County.

West helped lead the trip, which included personnel from South Metro, the Castle Rock, Arvada and Adams County fire departments and the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office. Band members left May 29 and returned home June 10, arriving first in Frankfurt, Germany before traveling throughout the region and ending in Paris.

“It was definitely not a tourist trip at all, which was fine. That’s not what we were there for,” said Castle Rock Fire Rescue Lt. Adam Gallegos, who plays bagpipes for the band and lives in Thornton. “We were up early every morning, we got home late.”

The band traveled to locations widely known, and those that aren’t.

That included the Brittany American Cemetery in St. James, France. World War II veterans told West they referred to Brittany as “the forgotten cemetery,” because most people visit Omaha Beach when in the area.

The 28-acre Brittany cemetery is where 4,405 war dead are laid to rest.

Most died in the Normandy and Brittany campaigns of 1944, according to the American Battle Monuments Commission.

On June 7, the band traveled to Omaha Beach, and the following day played at Sainte-Mere-Eglise, where paratroopers unintentionally landed during D-Day. The local church is known for the story of paratrooper

John Steele, made famous by the film “The Longest Day.” Steele landed on the church steeple and became trapped there as other paratroopers were shot from the sky.

Steele hung from the church for hours until German soldiers captured him.

He later escaped and survived the war, according to The Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mere-Eglise.

Gallegos, West and Barrella all pointed to this stop as one of the most memorable moments of the trip. As the band played “Amazing Grace” during a performance, something unusual happened. The crowds, estimated in the thousands, began to sing with them.

“The people in the square were singing louder than we could play,” Gallegos said. “That gave me goosebumps.”

West said the trip was meaningful for everyone, but particularly those with a personal connection.

“A number of our band members had relatives that fought on D-Day as well as the other battles around that time in World War II,” he said.

“Including one of my bass drummers from Adams County that actually found the grave of his father’s cousin.”

Most impactful for West was meeting veterans who fought during D-Day and hearing their firsthand accounts of the battle.

“What struck me about their stories was that most of them had volunteered to go to war at age 16, 17,” Gallegos said. “They had to beg their parents to sign off the military stuff and they actually had to get permission from the schools.”

All three men noted the beauty of the Normandy area. Omaha’s sandy beaches, rolling green hills and a resort-like town where children built sand castles by the ocean — a town that might have been a tourist destination were it not for the devastating history, Gallegos said.

Barrella imagined nurses in the middle of a war zone treating wounded, soldiers piling onto the shore from boats, no better than sitting ducks, the injured sinking to the ocean floor, soldiers trying to scale cliffs, and recalled peering at 75-year-old craters that remain on the beach from “the massive battle that went on.”

“You think about what took place there. It’s surreal. It really is,” West said.

West said the trip reminded him to fervently honor World War II and D-Day veterans, whose time on earth is dwindling.

“They’re passing on in such a huge number right now,” West said.

“They’re that age.”

For Gallegos, the trip sparked a desire to keep on playing, and to keep honoring veterans’ sacrifices.

“I hope to still be playing by the 100th anniversary,” said the 38-yearold Gallegos. “I’d love to go back.”

Club members supported the program because of their personal experience with burn victims.

Schomp took over the sales event 29 years ago and has since raised more than $400,000 for the burn center. Every year, the weeklong fundraiser brings in at least $25,000 from donations and a portion of sales, according to Schomp representatives.

The fundraiser is vital to the Burn Camps Program, which survives off fundraised dollars.

“We work diligently to foster relationships with people,” said Trudy Boulter, the program’s director. “If

it speaks to you, people will donate, and we can actually watch kids change.”

The Burn Camps Program offers three camps, free of cost to families and patients. The summer camp takes place at Rocky Mountain National Park, the winter camp is hosted in Steamboat Springs and the family camp is at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park.

The camps connect burn survivors with peers and teach them skills to integrate into their new norm.

“It goes all the way on the spectrum to aftercare, for those families who need help on what’s next, what’s the new normal,” Boulter said. “We have camps to provide that emotional healing once the physical scars heal.”

The training should focus on improving the understanding of mental illness, levels of care, and trauma informed language, emphasizing the procedures of the mental health system in Colorado (i.e. what it is like for someone to enter through the crisis system on a mental health hold or transportation hold and receive treatment at various levels of care), and provide skills training on recognizing mental illnesses.

The RFP documents may be reviewed and/or printed from the Rocky Mountain E-Purchasing System website at www.rockymountainbidsystem.com. RFP documents are not available for purchase from Douglas County Government and can only be accessed from the above-mentioned website.
