Improvements planned for Tanks Park

LESLEY GEORGE

Colorado Frame Company owner, 9567 S. University About me I was born in Tripoli, Libya, in North Africa. My dad was in the oil business, so we traveled around a lot, to Texas, California, Alaska, a lot of places. We moved here in 1972. I’ve lived here ever since.

I was a professional ice skater. I went off and skated in the Ice Follies — it’s now Disney on ice — for several years. I love the show biz. I love all of the sparkle. I love performing.

Our story When I was 23, I walked into a doit-yourself frame shop to frame some of my own watercolors. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to start working there. That’s how my husband Tim and I met. In 2002, the two of us bought our own frame shop and we’ve now been doing it for 17 years.

I think what makes us different is that we really listen to what our customers want. We have over 5,000 frame samples to choose from. We take people in that have never framed before and ask them a ton of questions, where it’s going to go and what they are interested in.

We are open six days a week. It’s just the two of us. We don’t have any employees. We do everything ourselves so

Calling all pickleball enthusiasts: The community’s only outdoor pickleball courts are getting a facelift.

This fall, Tanks Park, on Wildcat Reserve Parkway at Broadway, will undergo a $221,000 renovation to improve its existing courts and skate ramps.

Soaring in popularity in recent years, pickleball, a mix of badminton, table tennis and tennis, uses smaller courts, paddles and what resembles a whiffle ball. League practices, clinics and drop-ins take place at Tanks Park. Those interested in playing should visit highlandsranch. org/pickleball.

The recreational amenities at Tanks Park sit on two giant water tanks that each store up to 3 million gallons of water and serve paying customers across the community.

The Highlands Ranch Metro District has had an agreement with Centennial Water and Sanitation District since 1988.

To accommodate future amenities, concrete anchors were poured on top of the reservoirs. In 2004, the five-acre park — equipped with restrooms, a sheltered picnic area, hockey rink and playground — was built. It’s one of 25 parks managed by the metro district.

After gathering feedback at a May 14 community meeting, which drew several people from the pickleball community, the metro district decided to focus on two components of the park — the pickleball courts and skate ramps, which have weathered over the past 18 years.

“They liked the idea of having enclosed pickleball courts,” said Ken Standen, metro district manager of construction and facilities maintenance. “That will improve play.”

The skate park will still be targeted to beginner to intermediate riders but all ramps will be replaced. The in-line hockey courts will be removed, as participation “has been down over the years,” Standen said.

The skate park improvements will cost about $146,000 and the pickleball improvements will account for $75,000. The most notable change will be the park’s setup. The skate park will be moved to the west tank and the pickleball courts will be moved to the east tank, which has steel embeds on the lid for fencing.

A timeline for completion has not been determined, Standen said.

While the park is closed, those who utilize the skate ramps can use Redstone Skate Park, 3280 Redstone Park Circle.

Teachers rattled by board’s refusal to reinstate collective bargaining Douglas County Federation, the teachers’ union, has not had an agreement in place since 2012

Roughly 40 educators from the Douglas County School District filled the boardroom of the district’s administrative building at the latest board of education meeting. During public comment, several teachers took the stand, where they dumped hundreds of marbles — representing teachers and staff — into a white bucket placed on the floor between them and the dais.

“These marbles and the people they represent have one clear message,” Mary Jo King, a teacher at Sagewood Middle School in Parker, said at the June 4 meeting. “It’s time to work together for a better Douglas County School District.”

The teachers, wearing pins with “CBA” printed in blue, were there to ask the school board to reinstate a collective bargaining agreement, which they said would increase morale and teacher input in districtwide decision making, as well as provide a sick-leave bank. The request was ultimately shot down by the school board.

they just made against teachers.”

Union collected signatures for petition Nine years ago, the collaborative relationship between Douglas County School District and its teachers’ union, the Douglas County Federation, was lauded nationally. Then, in 2012, a conservative, reform-minded majority board voted to sever ties with the union, putting an end to a collective bargaining agreement that veteran teachers say strengthened communication and collaboration across the district.

“It was just heartbreaking,” King said in a phone interview on June 3. “They just tore down an amazing collaborative structure which empowered teachers.”

The school board’s reform efforts sparked years of contention, causing what community members called an exodus of quality teachers.

In 2015, three anti-reform members, including Ray, were elected to the boad. Two years later, four candidates with similar beliefs were elected, signaling a new majority and shift in power. The Douglas County Federation campaigned in 2017 for the four candidates, who promised to prioritize retaining quality educators and increasing teacher pay.

In December 2018, members of the Douglas County Federation met to discuss bringing back a collective bargaining agreement. Over the next five months, they collected 3,720 signatures from teachers and classified employees, such as teachers’ aides, for a petition asking the board to collectively bargain with teachers and staff, according to union president Kallie Leyba.

Members of the Douglas County Federation report more than 70 percent of the district’s 4,400 licensed teachers and about 60 percent of the district’s entire staff of 8,100 signed the petition. The number of signatures that came from members of the teachers’ union was not calculated, and the union does not release information on its total membership count.

As the local chapter of the American Teachers Federation, the voluntary organization exists to offer a network of professionals in education and professional development opportunities.

“This is a way for us to have a collective voice and be part of the decision making,” Hoegh said in a phone interview a day before the board meeting.

“Our school board and our superintendent have consistently voiced their desire to work with teachers and educators, and to me this is exactly what we need, what they need, to be able to do what’s best for our district right now.”

Three seats on the school board are up for reelection in November, and a collective bargaining agreement could be a hot-button issue among voters in Douglas County. Hoegh and other members of the teachers’ union said they wanted to present the petition to the board before the start of next school year.

“I know that people get nervous for political reasons and elections,” Hoegh said. “To me, this isn’t a political mistake, it’s a golden opportunity to make the right decision for our district. Our teachers will be so excited to campaign for the board if they push this through.”

Deciding next steps At the June 4 meeting, Ray listed the school board’s ongoing goals — increasing funds, supporting a strategic planning process, launching a new framework for compensation — as reasons for not recommending the district move forward with the teachers’ request. Many employees have received three raises in the past year, he said. The pay increases have brought the average teacher pay from $53,080 in the 2017-18 school year to $56,082 in the 2018-19 school year, according to data from the Colorado Department of Education.

Ray also pointed to the district’s employee council, an advisory group of 40 employees charged with giving feedback to the superintendent.

Douglas County Federation members, a disappointed Hoegh said, will reconvene to decide their next steps.

“I feel defeated but convinced that when I walk out of this building, someone else is going to have another idea,” Hoegh said. “Because that’s how we work. It’s not one person calling the shots, it’s everyone coming together to think of different ways to help our kids and to help each other.”

County will add Community Response Team for youths only Mental health experts call idea ‘a phenomenal resource’

Based on data that shows more than one-third of calls responded to in 2018 by Douglas County’s Community Response Teams — which pair a law enforcement officer with a mental health clinician — were youths between 5 and 19 years old, county commissioners have approved funding to create a unit to work exclusively with young people and schools in the county.

State behavioral health officials say they do not know of any other similar co-responder program in Colorado dedicated solely to youth.

Douglas County’s three CRT units are the result of a project of the Douglas County Mental Health Initiative,a unique partnership of more than 40 public, private and faith-based entities that has been working since 2014 to identify gaps in the county’s mental health resources and find ways to fill them.

CRTs, also known as co-responder teams, provide a range of services, including directly admitting people in crisis to a facility. But, most often,

people are treated, stabilized, provided with resources and allowed to stay in their home. The county created the teams, based on a model in Colorado Springs, to prevent people in crisis from going to jail or the emergency room if mental health treatment was what they truly needed.

The county began piloting the first CRT in May 2017. It added a second in December 2017. One team is based in Castle Rock and works with Castle Rock police, and the other covers unincorporated Douglas County, working with the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office. The county is planning to add a third this summer, although it is still determining its jurisdiction.

Of the 1,111 individuals helped by CRTs in 2018, the data shows approximately 37 percent were between 5 and 19 years old, according to a CRT annual report. That age population comprised the largest segment of any age group. Calls ranged from disputes between children and parents to welfare checks on youths who were suicidal Deputy County Manager Barbara Drake said this likely reaffirms mental health conditions emerge in adolescence, and it shows a need for schools, law enforcement and mental health professionals to unite.

“It just led us to believe that we needed to work more closely with the schools and with, specifically, the

school resource officers to look at how we can connect what is happening in school, what is happening at home, what is happening out in the community, for these young people,” said Drake, who helped spearhead the Mental Health Initiative’s creation.

“We need to connect those dots.”

‘Most stressed generation’ The commissioners’ unanimous decision came on May 28 following community outcry for solutions to school safety and mental health support following the May 7 shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

They approved $331,250 for a unit that will work in the school system and the community to provide students mental health and substance-use support. The money was part of a $13.3 million financial offer from commissioners to local schools.

“I’d like to make sure that the CRT team is getting the information out,” said Commissioner Lora Thomas while speaking with Colorado Community Media the day after the board approved the funds.

Reaction to the $13.3 million proposal varied, with some community members applauding it while others were skeptical of other aspects of the plan. The Douglas County School District’s Board of Education urged commissioners to take more time over its proposal.

Jason Williams, clinical director of the Pediatric Mental Health Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said numerous factors likely contribute to why the CRT sees so many young people, but high-stress among children and poor access to mental health services are two of the most significant.

He cited a report from the American Psychological Association that examined Generation Z, an age group that witnessed 9/11, has grown up in a world with mass shootings, active shooter drills and, according to the study, is most likely to report poor mental health.

“A lot of our kids are getting to crisis points,” he said. “They are the most stressed generation on the planet right now.”

Williams also pointed to the alarming youth suicide rates in Colorado, a leading cause of death for age groups under 24. Between 2015 and 2017 in Colorado, 222 people died by suicide between the ages of 10 and 18, according to a report from the Colorado Office of the Attorney General.

He applauded the county’s decision to add a youth-focused CRT. “It’s a phenomenal resource,” Williams said. “I’m really super happy to hear that those teams exist.”

Summer kicks off with 19th annual Classic Car Show Car enthusiasts from across the region gathered at Cherry Hills

One day of the year, the massive parking lot at Cherry Hills Community Church fills with hundreds of one-of-a-kind cars and motorcycles.

Hosted by the Highlands Ranch Community Association, the 19th annual Classic Car Show took place June 8, a sweltering summer day.

The show brings car enthusiasts and curious individuals of all ages from across the south metro Denver area.

This year featured more than 150 motor vehicles.

Reasons for participating vary.

For some people, like John Wanniger, it’s nostalgic. He stood next to his burnt orange, squeaky clean, 2010 Dodge Challenger. The car is a newer version of one he owned in the `70s, he said.

“When I was a kid,” Wanniger, of Roxborough, said, “I used to have cars and fix them up.”

Jenie Lawler first saw the jet-black, 1983 Zimmer Golden Spirit in 1985, at a car dealership in California. At the time she was married with kids.

Three years ago, after her daughter and husband had died, she found that same car, bought it and drove it back to her home in Littleton.

“They say when you find your passion, it heals you,” Lawler said.

She brings out her beloved vehicle on special occasions. Last year, she participated in 20 car shows. She enjoys driving it to technical colleges because “the young kids are amazed.”

“To me,” Lawler said, “it’s a blend of old and new.”

For some, the car show is an opportunity to show off years of hard work.

Ten years ago, Linda Terpenning and her husband, George, bought their 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda, a bright-orange muscle car, off eBay. The couple from Wheat Ridge spent the next six to eight years restoring the vehicle.

“It’s loud,” said Linda Terpenning, who grew up frequenting car shows with her father. “And you get a lot of lookers.”

Reams of evidence under review in STEM shooting case Suspect appears in court as defense, prosecutors debate time needed to assess discovery

The older suspect charged in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting case appeared before a judge for a brief hearing June 7 in a courtroom filled with supporters of Kendrick Castillo’s parents, also in attendance.

Castillo was the sole fatality in the May 7 tragedy that left eight other students injured. Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler estimated 75 people were in the courtroom or in an overflow area in support of the Castillo family.

In court, defense attorneys requested Slade schedule the next court appearance in the fall, suggesting an October date. They needed time, they said, to evaluate “the sheer volume” of discovery turned over to them by prosecutors.

That includes more than 6,000 pages of PDF documents and hundreds of gigabytes of media evidence such as video and audio of interviews, body camera and dash camera footage.

Brauchler said it should not take so long for defense attorneys, who he referred to as “high-quality, wellexperienced” attorneys, to evaluate discovery.

“I think that’s excessive,” he told the judge of their request. “A preliminary hearing is not a trial.”

In preliminary hearings, a judge could determine issues around bond and will decide if probable cause exists in the case. Slade set the next hearing for late September and reserved three days for the proceedings.

Before settling on dates, she asked attorneys how long the preliminary hearing would take. Although Brauchler said half a day at most, defense attorneys said two to three days.

Brauchler spoke with reporters following the hearing where he repeated his belief it should not take months for discovery evaluation.

DCSD board denies charter applications Board members support ideas, raise questions with fundamentals

Citing limited family interest, resources and budget, the Douglas County School Board unanimously turned down two charter school applications, one with a focus on students with special needs, the other a Montessori school.

“I want to be very clear that I appreciate your passion for these students,” board member Anne-Marie Lemieux said during a June 6 board meeting, when the charters were considered. “I will continue to make sure that we are offering opportunities for all students in our schools that we currently have in Douglas County.”

Here’s a look at what each charter application proposed.

John Dewey Institute Judy Brannberg, who with her husband started what is now STEM School Highlands Ranch, proposed the John Dewey Institute, a K-14 school specifically designed to meet the needs of students on the autism

spectrum.

In her plan, Brannberg outlined an enrollment that would consist of 50% students with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis — of which 15% would be twice-exceptional students, who are both gifted and have learning challenges — and the other 50% traditional student learners.

The school’s curriculum would emphasize project-based learning in areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, math and business, as well as career and technical education.

A handful of parents of students with special needs spoke in support of the charter, citing their experiences at neighborhood schools, where navigating individualized learning plans and working with staff can be challenges.

Lemieux commended Brannberg for her focus on students with special needs, but the board ultimately denied the charter, expressing doubt in the low number of letters of intent to enroll, the absence of a location and a staff with few special education professionals.

“We certainly have advocated that our charters start looking at being more accessible for students with significant needs,” Lemieux said.

“So I think it’s certainly exciting for me to see that our charters and our future applicants are saying yes, we

want to do something that specifically acknowledges those students who need that choice.”

Renaissance Montessori Academy Parker-based Renaissance Montessori Academy applied for a new charter contract that would serve students in kindergarten and preschool.

Led by a Montessori-certified teacher and teacher’s assistant, each classroom would have a 1:10 adultto-child ratio. Curriculum would integrate social and emotional skills into the academic areas of art, communication, culture, language, practical life, math, music and sensory awareness, according to the charter’s website.

Board members lauded the Montessori learning model but ultimately denied the request, citing a limited plan for serving students with special needs, limited mental health resources and no detail on insurance coverage, among other concerns.

“The narrative makes a commitment to having qualified staff but does not identify a process to ensure the students are supported with credentialed individuals, and the funding for services is extremely limited,” board member Christina Ciancio-Schor said. “For those reasons I vote to deny.”

Step in the right direction Exactly what the youth CRT will look like, and when it will start, is unclear.

But Beverly Kingston, director of The Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of ColoradoBoulder, also called it a step in the right direction.

The center has long recommended the creation of interagency social support teams to work with youths on their mental health needs. She wasn’t familiar with the details of how Douglas County’s youth CRT would work, but believes it “sounds like a good strategy” based on research recommendations.

Kingston envisions a future with a well-funded infrastructure that focuses as much on prevention as it does crisis response, including emotional education beginning at a young age and school-based teams that listen to students while working to create a positive and safe environment.

In the past 20 years, Kingston said law enforcement has learned a substantial amount about responding to crisis events and is prepared to handle them.

Less money and attention has been given to prevention.

“The key to stopping these shootings is to put what we know works to prevent violence in place,” she said. “I think we haven’t consistently been doing that across the nation and we can do a better job, and so that’s what we need to collectively understand.”

There isn’t much time left to get to know someone like Ruth Mullis.

Mullis, 96, is one of a dwindling number of “Rosies,” named for Rosie the Riveter — women who stepped into men’s roles in labor and business during World War II. In years past, Mullis has attended annual American Rosie the Riveter Association (ARRA) reunions, but health issues kept her home from this year’s convention in Iowa. With much of her generation fading into history, she’s hoping to meet some of her remaining sisters from the home front.

“People are starting to forget about us,” Mullis said from her Littleton home. “Before the war, women could be teachers, secretaries, nurses or housewives. But now, we’ve got women CEOs. We were part of that change. We proved our capabilities.

We were some of the first to wear pants, for heaven’s sake.”

Rosies were a vital part of the American war effort, said ARRA President Donnaleen Lanktree.

“They did it because they needed to do it,” Lanktree said. “Without them, winning the war would have been far more difficult. Many felt a sense of duty to the country, and to do what they could to bring their men home. Others did it to secure an income if their husbands were killed.”

There were perhaps millions of Rosies, Lanktree said, who produced 80,000 landing craft, 100,000 tanks, 300,000 aircraft, 15 million guns and 41 billion rounds of ammunition.

Rosies possess a special spirit and gumption, Lanktree said: “I never met a Rosie I didn’t like.”

Ruth’s story Mullis was born in 1923 in Michigan, and in the early years of the Great Depression, her father’s slew of respiratory diseases sent the family south in search of warmer weather.

Mullis, her parents and two brothers wound up living in the woods outside Orlando, Florida, where they slept on planks laid through the windows of their Model A Ford to keep them off the ground.

“I don’t like to talk about that time much,” Mullis said. “We ate what we could. We trapped rabbits. I was anemic.”

Eventually they moved in with relatives in Miami, and life steadied. In high school, Mullis met Ted Johnson, the man she would marry.

Mullis graduated from high school in June 1941, and wanted to go to nursing school, but her family couldn’t afford to send her. She was running a dry cleaners that winter when America entered the war after the Pearl Harbor attack.

Johnson joined the Navy, Mullis said, and gave away most of his belongings, expecting to die in combat.

Mullis said she, like many other young women, was eager to do her part to win the war. But her first application to work in a Convair aircraft plant was rejected for lack of experience.

Mullis went to work in the factory cafeteria and enrolled in riveting classes in night school. Though she showed little aptitude for riveting, she excelled at technical drawing and was soon put to work designing templates for aircraft wing parts.

New trail, surfing spot bolster Platte greenway Remote-controlled wave adds to growing aquatic offerings on river

Denver-area surfers rejoice: There’s a new wave to catch on the South Platte River.

On June 5, officials from South Suburban Parks and Recreation District and several partner agencies dedicated a new stretch of the Mary Carter Greenway, the bike trail that stretches along the South Platte, adding a mile to the East Bank Trail.

The new trail, which runs between Union Avenue on the south to Oxford Avenue on the north, runs parallel to an older trail on the west side of the river. It’s designed to alleviate some of the congestion on what’s becoming a heavily-used two-wheeled highway, said South Suburban park planner Pam Cornelisse.

“This has been a primarily industrial area for a long time,” Cornelisse said of the trail, which is sandwiched between an aggregate mill, a metal recycling facility and a junkyard. “But we’re reclaiming it into a place to be enjoyed.”

But the real action at the dedication was down in the river itself, where

surfers splashed in the wake of a “hydraulic wave shaper,” a narrow chute that creates a wave that can be adjusted up or down by park employees.

The new wave shaper joins another just downstream installed in 2016 at Englewood’s River Run Park, said Ken McKenzie, executive director of the Urban Drainage and Flood Control

District, which was instrumental in reworking the stretch of river.

The stretch joins an increasing number of aquatic amenities along the river, McKenzie said, a big shift from just a couple decades ago.

In the 1990s, McKenzie said, he once burned through half a roll of film taking photos of a canoe going down the river.

“It was so unusual to see anyone recreating in the river back then,” McKenzie said. “Today we see it all the time, and we’re thrilled. People take care of what they love.”

The wave shaper is a welcome addition for river surfers, said J.B. Breidenbaugh, owner of Littleton’s Altitude Paddleboards.

“It’s a tremendous safety improvement” over the old spillover dams in about the same spot on the river, Breidenbaugh said. “I can bring friends and novice paddlers here, and not worry they’re going to get banged up.”

The trail, too, is a big step toward reclaiming the stretch of river from decades of neglect, said Robert Searns, the Mary Carter Greenway’s project developer.

“We’ve turned No Man’s Land into a park,” Searns said of the new stretch of the trail.

The work of improving the Mary Carter Greenway will never truly be done, Searns said.

“But,” he said, “anyone can see it’s really coming into its prime.”

VOICES Peak experience is a case of aiming way too high

T

he greatest risk I am willing to take is grocery shopping in Douglas County on a Saturday afternoon.

It is an electrifying episode of “Supermarket Sweep” conjoined with a dress rehearsal for “Lord of the Flies.”

Get ready for some alliteration: It is carts and kids and confusion. Grandparents and grandchildren. Half are leaning over a phone, and the other half are looking in one direction and walking in another.

I go as punishment. If I have done something wrong, impermissible to my code, during the week, I feel a need to be punished.

It is not Catholic. It is Harry and Shirley, who instilled values in me I can’t shake.

I have no sense of adventure, and I never have had a sense of adventure.

QUIET DESPERATION

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR In defense of the Electoral College Per Article II of the U.S. Constitution, our president is not elected by the popular vote of citizens.

Instead, the president is elected by the Electoral College. While this has alarmed seemingly many Coloradans — to the point where our state government passed legislation with aim of circumventing it — the Electoral College is both a good and completely justifiable way to choose our president.

Some decry the Electoral College as controversially distancing the will of the people from the decision.

If the president were elected by popular vote, they would be prone to the corruption of the resulting mobrule popularity contest that would ensue. Victory in the Electoral College requires more than popularity, according to Alexander Hamilton.

(Both of them died at age 44.)

My biographer may find me in contempt if he or she has a high regard for risk and adventure in someone’s life.

Keeping commitments we make to ourselves

s any good salesperson or sales manager will tell you, getting a “verbal” commitment or a “verbal” yes from a prospect, without a signed agreement or authorized transaction, just doesn’t WINNING get the job done. As a matter of fact, it’s worse WORDS than just not getting the job done, this practice fills their sales pipeline with fluff and keeps the salesperson focused on the wrong opportunities and investing their time and energy on potential business that will most likely never materialize.

Michael Norton Verbal commitments are not just a salesperson’s woes: The verbal commitments we make to ourselves and never fulfill impact our lives in so many ways as we never quite close the transaction. And sooner or later our goals and dreams become just another lost opportunity.

We commit to certain behaviors. We commit to living in a different way. We commit to pursuing our dreams and passions. We commit to changing or breaking a bad habit. Sometimes we make these commitments and actually

say the words out loud. And other times we make the commitment within the safety of our own heart and mind. And what happens in most cases when we have under-committed or failed to commit to an agreement with ourselves, is that we tend to give up or lose more often than we win.

Although it may seem like it, this is not all bad news. The fact that we are having positive thoughts and making “verbal” commitments to ourselves is an indicator that we know we need to make a change or want something different in our lives. We want to make a change that aligns with the things we are most passionate about in this life. We want to alter something that is having a negative impact on our health or in our relationships. So, knowing that our intent is good, we just need to live up to the fulfillment and to our commitments.

This is why it is so extremely important to write down our goals. By writing down our goals we are turning our “verbal” commitment with ourselves into a form of an agreement. We are contracting with ourselves to commit to doing what we said we will do when we said we will do it, changing what we

Superintendent outlines district’s safety, mental health measures

month has passed since the tragic event at STEM School Highlands Ranch, which will forever change our community. I continue to be touched by the outpouring of support and love as we work to support our students – both those who attend STEM as well as those attending all DCSD schools. The way our community has come together is a true indicator of our unity of purpose — the 68,000 students who attend Douglas County Schools.

Over the past few weeks we have received numerous phone calls, emails and public comments from parents and community members who are understandably afraid, angry and hurting. Many want reassurance that their children will be safe in their schools when they start the 2019-20 school year. As a father and a grandfather, I understand these emotions. We are working through incredible heartache that will take many days, weeks, months and, perhaps, years to recover.

Thanks to those of you who have provided us with input about how best to keep our students safe. I want you to know we are listening to your feedback and will refer to it as we look to build upon our current, comprehensive safety plan.

In addition to the research-based security protocols being implemented in our schools, I want to outline several steps DCSD is taking for additional security measures. These security enhancements have already been in the works thanks to additional funding made possible by the passage of a $40 million mill levy override and $250 million bond this past November. Please understand that we cannot publicly disclose every detail of our security initiatives in order to protect them from being compromised. At the same time, we recognize the need to provide reassurances that immediate actions for improvements are taking place.

Another argument against the Electoral College is that it is unfair when someone wins the popular vote but loses the electoral vote. Aside from being suspect of having partisan motivation, this charge ignores the role that states play in our republic.

Eightyfive additional counselors will be in place in DCSD’s district-run schools by the beginning of Thomas Tucker the 2019-20 school year. Each of our elementary schools will now have a counselor.

In addition, the ratio of counselorto-student in the middle and high schools will significantly improve from one counselor per 350 students to one counselor per 250 students.

All counselors are licensed by the Colorado Department of Education.

In order to receive that license, individuals must have a master’s degree in school counseling. The majority of that coursework is mental healthbased. Increasing the accessibility to mental health providers will result in building strong relationships with all students during their school career.

DCSD continuously provides our school staff and students with training and drills related to school safety. And, we continue to offer our students, staff and families access to Safe2Tell and Texta-Tip, where suspicious behavior, threats, or other concerns can be anonymously reported.

One of the first actions DCSD’s current Board of Education took nearly two years ago was to reactivate the district’s Safety Committee.

meets monthly to review DCSD’s current safety and security procedures and recommends revisions and enhancements on an ongoing basis.

ummer is here, which typically means teenagers have more free time on their hands. And their hands may often be even more busy with their smartphones as they try to stay in touch with friends and fill the void normally occupied by school.

But while popular apps like Snapchat and Instagram have some benefit, mental health experts agree that in most cases human-to-human interaction is far more beneficial.

Finding a healthy balance of time spent on and off social media can be a challenge. According to 2018 study by Pew Research, 95% of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online “almost constantly.” Roughly one-third of participants said they visited Snapchat or YouTube most often.

Mental health experts recommend one to two hours of screen time a day and no more than 10 hours per week. Too much time spent on devices can take away from positive face-to-face activities, disrupt sleep and in turn disrupt mental health, and potentially hurt self-esteem.

• Listen to music. Or put your headphones in and head outside for a walk.

• Do a puzzle with family or friends.

• Play an old-fashioned board game: Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue or Candy Land, to name a few.

“As kids spend more time on (social media), there is a much higher likelihood that it is going to become more detrimental than beneficial because teens are very comparative with one another,” said Dr. Sarah Davidon, research director at Mental Health Colorado, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the treatment and prevention of mental health and substance-use disorders. “It starts getting really hard on teens, who, even without social media, are not as confident with

themselves at different ages in their lives.”

The good news is that summer doesn’t have to be spent in the pervasive world of technology. Balance is possible with the help of some good old-fashioned fun.

Get outside Dr. Bruno Anthony, who specializes in psychology at Children’s Hospital Colorado, stresses the importance of putting down the phone and engaging in physical activity, whether that be hiking, playing a sport or taking a walk with friends.

“We know that there is a strong relation between obesity and screen time,” Anthony said.

The Denver Art Museum has opened two recent exhibits that offer another way to spend summer hours, when one can enjoy an up-close experience of color and light, in contrast to the truly exceptional vistas and outdoor experiences that we enjoy close to home or within a few hours’ drive.

Exhibits are in the Hamilton Building, while the Gio Ponti building to the north is closed for renovation.

“Way cool,” one might observe!

“Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America” opened on the second floor early in May, running through Aug. 25, and might be of special interest to residents of Arapahoe Acres in Englewood and Arapahoe Hills in Littleton, who live in midcentury communities.

Many other homes in our south area carry similar architectural design, and midcentury furnishings find their way into buildings of every style in the area. It’s said to be a first with its strong emphasis on play, as well as design. Playful objects for adults are multiple, as well as child-sized furniture and playthings.

Co-curated by Denver Art Museum’s architecture and design curator Darrin Alfred and Monicka Obniski, curator of 20th and 21st century design at the Milwaukee Art Museum, where it debuted, the exhibition includes over 200 items in a variety of mediums: paper, textile, metal and wood furniture, toys, clocks and many other accessories. Items on exhibit are designed, among others, by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller Furniture Company, Irving Harper, Alexander Girard, Anne Tyng, Henry P. Glass, Estelle and Erwin Laverne and sculptor Isamu Noguchi, whose curvy, sculptural red playground piece is so inviting. Stop by the table full of tops you can spin.

Playful related films show in several locations, recognizing the need to escape Cold War anxieties that were in and on the air daily … New manufacturing techniques made ownership of many items affordable — and a different attitude on childrearing reflected the inclination to interact with good design.

One finds a choice of sets of “House of Cards” available in the special gift shop where one exits, as well as handsome design books and assorted toys for kids and grown-ups. A related project is “Make a Card, Build a House,” where visitors will decorate Eames cards for a giant house of cards.

Also at the DAM is the just-opened “The Light Show,” co-curated by modern and contemporary art curator Rebecca Hart and Spanish colonial art curator Jorge Rivas Perez. It will run through May 3, 2020 and warrants more than one visit to let your mind play with a variety of experiences.

A major recent acquisition (2017) by sculptor Fred Wilson: “The Way the Moon’s Afraid of the Dark,” is a good place to begin one’s visit on the fourth floor. It’s a huge chandelier, 4 1/2 feet wide and 6 1/2 feet tall, made with Murano blown glass, clear brown glass and steel. Created for the 2017 Istanbul Biennial, Wilson incorporated Ottoman and Venetian lighting traditions — historically opposed to each other.

Next to Wilson’s work — and illuminated by it — is the massive and elegant “Rain Has No Father?” by African artist El Anatsui, with glitter reflecting light — and incorporating found materials: bottle tops and copper wire. (153 by 239 inches.) It was included in and purchased from an exhibit of his work at the museum in 2008 and we were so pleased to see it again.

The eight-week Colorado Renaissance Festival kicks off its 43rd summer on Saturday, June 15, with a treasure trove of magic, artisans and entertainment in Larkspur, 30 minutes south of Denver and just north of Colorado Springs.

The event, which averages about 200,000 patrons each year, is set in a 30acre village with 10 stages of non-stop entertainment, including jugglers, acrobatics, a village hypnotist and more.

Davidon, too, emphasized the link between brain and body. Physical health and activity leads to positive mental health, she said. She recommends even the simplest of outdoor activities: coloring with chalk on the sidewalk or getting a snow cone and taking a walk as a family.

“If our bodies are healthy, if we are keeping our bodies fit and well maintained through exercise, what we eat and how we sleep, then our brains are much more likely to be healthier,” Davidon said.

Research shows that being outdoors also allows kids to get a healthy dose of vitamin D from the sun, develop an appreciation for nature and learn to take risks, like climb a tree. If young people are kept in a bubble, Harvard Medical School reports, they “may not have the confidence and bravery to face life’s inevitable risks.”

Davidon reminds those parents that it’s OK for children and teens to be bored, with no activity or screen.

“It’s great to spend time with your kids but that doesn’t mean you have to plan something every moment of the day,” Davidon said. “It can mean you just take a walk or go catch butterflies.”

Boredom is healthy, Davidon said, as it is a chance for young people to be “inventive.”

“They might kick and scream but that’s OK,” Davidon said. “Parents aren’t bad parents if their kids are bored.”

“She was kind of relieved ultimately to get that time back so she could spend time with people she cared about rather than keeping this artificial contest going,” Vanderkolk said. “She would, in general, do more things with the people who she genuinely wanted to spend time with.”

Parker Days 2019 came and went June 6-9 bringing with it a weekend of fun as summer draws nearer.

Thousands turned out from across the Denver metro area to celebrate one of the first major fair and carnivals of the year. Attendees strolled hundreds of booths, including a flight simulator and Nerf Turf area for kids to blow off steam.

The community’s flagship summer event has grown every year and has drawn more and more people from outside the town to experience Parker life for a weekend. It’s one of Douglas County’s largest events, slightly trailing only the county fair in magnitude.

Dennis Houston, president and CEO of the Parker Area Chamber of Commerce, which puts on the event, said it has become an event for everyone.

“You don’t have to pay to get in, you can bring your own water, you can bring your own food, so if you think about it, it’s an opportunity to bring your family and not have to invest,” Houston said. “We really try to keep it a community-based festival.”

What began as a smaller celebration at its beginning 42 years ago has turned into a four-day spectacle of carnival rides, funnel cakes and live music. For newcomers, it offers a slice of a small-town fair without having to stray too far from the city. Josh Krall,

“We’ve lived here for three years,” Krall said, “and Parker Days has been a tradition every year.”

About 272,000 people attended last year’s event, Houston said. Numbers from the 2019 Parker Days were unavailable at press time, but the numbers have grown with each year.

This year, the chamber streamlined the ticket system and made all concerts free to keep with the spirit of a “come one, come all” event that, Houston said, is like a brochure for

the town’s signature homey feel.

As part of this year’s “Do Good, Feel Good” theme, two stations allowed residents to get to know each other better and to express appreciation or compliment one another. On June 8, the event opened early to people with special needs to give them a chance to enjoy the rides without the anxiety of a massive crowd.

One of the new draws for this year’s event was a Nerf Turf area, where kids — or adults — could load up with foam Nerf darts and fire them out of plastic guns at each other in a dodgeball-type game. The typical carnival

rides, street performers and miles of food trucks and booths provided something for everyone.

The two massive carnival set-ups, each one sandwiching Mainstreet on the north and south ends, boasted rides and games for kids and adults.

In between the two carnivals, local business tents lined Mainstreet and local performers caught visitors’ ears as they walked by.

Tiny House Festival returns for third year More than 40 small living structures to be displayed at Adams County Fairgrounds STAFF REPORT

More than 40 small living structures, from tiny houses on wheels to container homes, will be on display at the Colorado Tiny House Festival, returning for its third year June 21-23 at the Adams County Fairgrounds.

Other structures on display will be skoolies, van conversions, gypsy wagons, teardrops, yurts and more. The festival also will debut its Camping Corner and a Skoolie Build Workshop.

Camping Corner will showcase the latest small living structures.

The hands-on Skoolie Build/bus conversion workshop will feature experts who have completed multiple conversions and live in their skoolies.

The workshop is limited to 50 people.

Registration includes weekend admission to the festival.

The event is hosted by the Colorado Tiny House Association.

Art Laubach, Colorado Tiny House Festival organizer and director, is working to organize the tiny living movement in Colorado and help make tiny home living legal in the state.

“Tiny home living is becoming a bigger deal in Colorado,” Laubach

said in a news release. “Durango’s first tiny-home community, Escalante Village, was recently announced, the small-home community Creede America continues to expand, many mountain towns have built tiny homes to rent to workers as affordable housing options, the town of Lyons recently approved an ordinance allowing a limited number of tiny homes to be used as accessory dwelling units, and now the town of Fountain is considering adopting zoning rules for tiny homes.”

In addition to tours of nearly 40 unique small living structures, attendees will enjoy expert speaker presentations, hands-on workshops, a product and service marketplace, entertainment, food, drink and more.

A home is considered “tiny” if it has less than 600 square feet of living space. Financial advantages include low construction and land costs, low utilities and upkeep.

The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. June 21 and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

June 22-23. Single-day tickets cost $10 if purchased online or $15 on the day of the event. Children ages 12 and younger are free. Three-day tickets also are for sale, for $20 if purchased in advance or $30 if purchased at the event.

“The tolerance for the parts was just three thousandths of an inch,” Mullis said. “The most exciting moment was when I’d finish a template, and they’d take them out to the floor, and soon you’d hear ‘whir-chunk. Whir-chunk’ — the sound of parts coming off the line using my templates.”

Mullis married Johnson while he was home on leave in 1943, and by the time the war ended, she was repairing damaged planes coming back from combat theaters.

After the war In the fall of 1945, Johnson returned home, and Mullis said she and the other Rosies were eager to move on with life.

“We did our part as best we could,” Mullis said. “We all walked out those doors and went back to being women.

We were thinking of starting lives with our husbands, of having children.”

A tumor, however, left Mullis unable to have children, though she flourished as a draftsman, building on the skills she learned at Convair. She went to work in an engineering firm, designing roofs for churches, gymnasiums and other large structures.

“I would design these complex roofs, then I would take them over to an engineer who would sign his name on them,” Mullis said.

Mullis and Johnson retired to a cabin above Deckers in Colorado in 1973. Johnson died in 2003, and Mullis stayed alone in the cabin for several years after.

In 2006, Mullis met Leonard Mullis, a World War II veteran and former head librarian at Arapahoe Community College, on Match.com. They be-

came one of the oldest couples to ever connect on the dating site. The couple married and moved into Leonard’s home in Littleton.

Mullis has enjoyed meeting other Rosies at the ARRA conventions, but says they’re fading fast.

“There were 50 or 60 of us at the 2017 convention,” Mullis said. “By last year, it was down to 28. That’s how fast we’re dying off.”

Finding Rosies Many women who lived through World War II may not even realize they were Rosies, said Jo Ann Fisher, president of ARRA’s Colorado chapter and a daughter of a Rosie herself.

“A woman saw my Rosie shirt, and said, ‘All I did was take over driving the tractor on the farm when my brother went off to war,’” Fisher said.

“I told her: ‘You’re a Rosie!’“ The ARRA counts any woman who supported the home effort as a Rosie, Fisher said, whether that was in manufacturing, seamstressing, farming or growing a Victory Garden.

It’s taken decades for Rosies to appreciate the part they played in breaking down gender roles, Fisher said.

“They’ll say they went to work to bring the men home so they could get married and have babies,” Fisher said. “And we say, ‘no, you broke it all open for women!’”

Fisher said she’d love to help Mullis meet other Rosies.

“It’s been hard to get meetings going in Colorado,” Fisher said. “We’ve been trying, but I’ve kind of given up. People are so spread out, and the women are all at least in their 90s now.”

Mullis said she doesn’t know how much time she has left, but she hopes she can spend some of it in the company of some of the bold, strong women who answered their country’s call.

“Let’s get together,” she said, “before there’s no one left who remembers.”

Perseverance, love of competition set track athletes apart Nugent, Hall, Sprout honored for high school achievements

Valor Christian’s Anna Hall and Drake Nugent of Highlands Ranch finished their high school track and field careers with rewarding seasons.

Cole Sprout of Valor Christian lived up to expectations.

Hall was named the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Girls Track Athlete of the Year while Nugent and Sprout were co-winners of the boys Track Athlete of the Year award.

An ankle injury kept Hall out of action for more than five weeks before the May 16-18 state meet, but she recovered in time to win two individual events and run on two state champion record-setting relays.

Hall, a senior headed for the University of Georgia who set a national pentathlon record with 4,302 points in February, won the 100-meter hurdles (14.18) and the 300 hurdles (41.70) to give her seven individual career 4A and 5A state titles. She also anchored two record-setting relay teams, 1:37.00 in the 4x200 and meet record in the 4x400.

Senior Brendan Eckerman will always remember the fun he had swimming for Cherry Creek this season.

He competed in three previous CHSAA Class 5A State Swimming Championships with second place as his best finish, but this season he climbed to the top of the awards podium four times.

Eckerman, who will move up a level and swim at Wisconsin next season, helped lead Creek to the state team title and is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Boys Swimmer of the Year.

He was first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.69 and captured the state championship in the 100 freestyle in 45.62.

Eckerman was the anchor on two relay teams that won state titles.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Nikolas Silolahti, Tommy Salvetti, Blake Jorgens and Eckerman won in 1:24.73.

He capped off a banner state meet by teaming with Silolahti, Lars Hanna and Bryce Ortanes in winning the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:04.20.

“I had the most fun this season,” admitted Eckerman. “I worked the hardest this season. It was great all year. I had a great state meet. I won or was part of the winning team in every event I swan.
