12 metro police agencies helped Denver with protests Tactics, use-of-force rules differed among departments

In the days after protests against racial injustice and police brutality first broke out in Denver on May 28, the Denver Police Department called in backup from a dozen metro-area law enforcement agencies, each bringing their own equipment, tactics and use-of-force regulations.

City police departments and county sheriff ’s offices in Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson, Adams and Broomfield counties assisted in Denver.

As police and protesters clashed, with some protesters vandalizing or destroying property or throwing objects at police, officers deployed a variety of crowd-control methods, including firing “less-lethal munitions” at protesters, and deploying tear gas and flash-bang devices.

How Denver police oversaw and coordinated the response and crowd-control methods of officers from numerous agencies is difficult to determine -- the department did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Colorado Community Media.

“Although I do not agree with those who have committed property damage during the protests, property damage is a small price to pay for constitutional rights — especially the constitutional right of the public to speak against widespread injustice,” Jackson wrote in an 11-page decision, citing injuries to protesters including “loss of vision, fractured bones requiring surgery, deep laceration, loss of eyes, (and) ruptured testicles.”

“If a store’s windows must be broken to prevent a protestor’s facial bones from being broken or eye being permanently damaged, that is more than a fair trade,” Jackson wrote. “If a building must be graffiti-ed to prevent the suppression of free speech, that is a fair trade. The threat to physical safety and free speech outweighs the threat to property.”

The protests were spurred by the May 25 death of black Minneapolis man George Floyd, who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes. Investigators ruled Floyd’s death a homicide, and officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder. Three other officers have been charged with aiding and abetting murder.

Officers from a dozen metro-area agencies responded to the Denver protests, according to Denver police: Adams County Sheriff ’s Office, Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office, Arvada Police, Aurora Police, Broomfield Police, Brighton Police, Commerce

City Police, Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office, Lakewood Police, Wheat Ridge Police and Westminster Police.

Though Colorado Community Media was not able to obtain comment from all 12 agencies, a sampling of respondents showed a variety of tactics and involvement.

Adams County deputies, for example, deployed flash-bang devices and two types of tear gas, according to Commander Paul Gregory.

In social media posts and in response to questions from journalists, Denver police repeatedly denied using flash-bang devices against protesters.

Adams County deputies detained protesters on behalf of Denver police, Gregory said, but said the detainments were not arrests.

Unlike many local agencies, Adams County deputies do not wear body cameras.

Gregory did not respond to a question about how many Adams County deputies provided backup in Denver.

Adams County Sheriff Rick Reigenborn did not respond to multiple requests for comment on his department’s tactics and crowd control methods.

The Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office sent 44 officers on May 31 and June 1, drawn from county deputies and officers from city police departments that form a joint task force.

Metro Denver communities gather in protest Marches, other events follow George Floyd’s death COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

When Hana Berhanu stepped up to the mic in front of hundreds at a June 7 Castle Rock protest, she first spoke about the anxiety she felt in deciding what to share that afternoon.

She didn’t know if she should talk about the secret friend she had in second grade, who continued playing with her despite the child’s parents forbidding it because Berhanu is black.

She could discuss the first time someone told her to “go back to where you came from,” Berhanu said. Or, she could talk about what it felt like, more recently, watching her hometown of Minneapolis burn on television, her longing to be there in person, protesting alongside loved ones, she said.

Instead, she decided to take the advice of a friend, she said, and say what was most on her heart. With that, Berhanu turned away from

In Castle Rock on June 7, protesters marched from the Philip S. Miller Library parking lot through downtown and gathered in Festival Park. Like a June 2 event, also organized by local residents Janine Reid and Josh Pease, the June 7 protest remained peaceful.

Elsewhere across the metro area: • In Centennial, a June 8 march in support of Black Lives Matter ended at Willow Creek Park, where a crowd of more than 100 heard Chesney Midcap, 31, speak of her experience growing up with racism that started when she was age 6.

• In Parker, hundreds marched through downtown Parker the night of June 4 in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Organizer Nina Garcia said she was surprised at the turnout. She said she has children who are biracial and felt she needed to do something to decry racism.

Highlands Ranch teen’s a ‘Ferocious Fighter’ Patrick Boland perseveres, helps others despite ‘suicide disease’

F

or eight years, Patrick Boland, 16, has lived with a pain throughout his body that is so excruciating, it can feel as if he’s wrapped in barbed wire, doused in gasoline and set on fire.

He has had a headache for the past five years: It’s in his eyes, in his gums, everywhere.

He stopped attending school in person in the eighth grade and has had to relearn to walk four times when the constant, unimaginable pain — caused by a rare neurological condition — became too much.

But the Highlands Ranch teen never stays down for too long.

His passion for baseball gets him out of bed each morning. His treatment regimen propels him through each day. His mom, younger sister and several friends who understand his reality bolster his spirits.

And fierce independence and unwavering self-discipline form a bedrock of inner strength and have led him to want to create a community for others in his shoes.

Six years ago, Patrick, with his mother’s help, started the nonprofit Ferocious Fighters to connect those dealing with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS. “CRPS is known as the suicide disease,” his mother Meg Boland said.

“Patrick was really in a bad place and didn’t want other people to feel as alone as he did.”

It has taken years of doctors appointments, experimental treatments and grit, but today, Patrick stands strong despite his physical suffering.

“I think I handle the pain really well at this point. But it took a really long time,” he said. “The pain doesn’t affect any functionality anymore — even if it’s as high as it can possibly be.”

The diagnosis Patrick was 8 when he jumped from a step in his front yard and twisted his left ankle. Four months later, he was still in excruciating pain. His ankle was cold to the touch. It turned purple.

“The doctors did an MRI and called me and said, ‘Everything is normal,’” Meg said. “And I said ‘Well, he hasn’t walked in four months.’ ...We went to the first physical therapy visit and within five minutes of being with Patrick, they said ‘This is CRPS.’” CRPS is a neurological condition that causespatients to experience constant nerve pain even after an injury has healed.

The illness is shrouded in mystery with very little known about its cause or how to treat it effectively, said Dr. Jeffery Kesten, one of Patrick’s physicians. Experts believe patients with CRPS likely have a genetic predisposition to the disease, but there is

Sometimes, patients will experience swelling, color or temperature changes and nail or hair growth changes.

They also often experience allodynia, or severe pain caused by non-painful stimuli, such as — for Patrick — getting into a pool and feeling the wind blow.

“He used to describe it as being wrapped in barbed wire, doused in gasoline and set on fire,” said Meg. One pain scale, called the McGill Pain Index, ranks CRPS higher than amputation of a finger without anesthesia and unprepared childbirth.

After his initial diagnosis in 2012, Patrick continued to receive more and more diagnoses for other conditions sometimes related to CRPS, including a lacking immune system, weakened cartilage and ligaments, frequent muscle cramps and other issues.

About 200,000 people in the U.S. experience the condition every year, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders.

While specialists can offer a variety of treatments, there is no cure. The best CRPS patients can hope for is finding subtle relief, functioning through the pain or, if they’re one of the lucky ones, remission. Patrick has never entered remission, he said.

People with a CRPS diagnosis also commonly experience suicidal ideations, Kesten said. That’s why the illness has been dubbed “the suicide disease,” according to the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Sydrome Association, a nonprofit supporting people with CRPS, sometimes known as RSDS. “It must be a horrible place to be,” Kesten said. “I would be concerned if a patient did not have mental health support in a true chronic pain condition because I don’t have a clue how it would not get to you and those around you.”

Starting Ferocious Fighters Patrick, deemed a gifted student a few years before his initial injury, was 10 years old when he decided he wanted to help other kids with CRPS by sending them all care packages.

But Meg explained that as a teacher at a Douglas County charter school, she couldn’t afford to send every kid with the disease a package.

“He said, ‘Well, how does Make-AWish do it?’ And I said well, they’re a nonprofit. He said ‘Well, let’s do that,” she remembers.

In 2014, Patrick registered Ferocious Fighters as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Six years later, 1,253 kids in 19 countries are linked together through the organization. They range in age from newborns to 21-year-olds and live all over the world, including Africa, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica and Canada. Thirty kids are from Colorado, nearly all living along the Front Range. There are six in Douglas County.

sent 70 care packages. In 2019, the number jumped to 350. So far, the organization has sent more than 1,000 packages total.

The packages include a blanket, a Ferocious Fighters T-shirt, a keychain, a hand-crocheted hat, a bumper sticker, a journal and rice hand warmers. All have flames on them to symbolize the burning pain that the kids experience.

They also include a handwritten, personalized letter from Patrick.

“I’m so sorry that you’re having such a great amount of sensitivity on your left leg,” he wrote in one letter. “I know how hard that can be to deal with.”

Each letter ends with his sign-off: “Gentle Hugs, Patrick.”

Meg and Patrick decided to start sending out immediate welcome packages before the full care package after they lost a kid on their waiting list to suicide, Meg said.

There also are the quarterly encouragement letters and birthday cards. And every November, Ferocious Fighters organizes a virtual walk to encourage the kids to get moving, an important treatment for their disease.

“The pain is unbearable,” Meg said. “You have to learn to function anyway because the pain is not going to go away.”

The group also organizes dozens of support groups for kids and parents throughout the world.

In a note to Meg and Patrick, one mother expressed how much the package meant to her daughter.

“She will not be dancing at the dance or marching with the bands, she cannot keep up with friends and has missed out on several school trips and clubs,” read a note from Nina Nation, the mother of a 13-year-old in Nevada. “But tonight, she got a package with her name on it, for her. She smiled. ... She opened the box and cherished everything inside piece by piece.”

Patrick has tried dozens of treatments throughout the years, including a host of prescription medications and experimental treatments. He’s been in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber; tried medical marijuana; taken ketamine pills; attempted painful “exposure therapy” sessions, which try to desensitize the patients’ nerves by vigorously rubbing them with a coarse blanket; seen chiropractors and massage therapists and more.

After eight years, Patrick has found a cocktail of supplements, medications and treatments that work for him. On top of his daily pills, he receives weekly immune boosters through an IV and, every three months, he undergoes an intense ketamine infusion used to treat chronic pain conditions.

One morning in February, Patrick entered Kesten’s infusion clinic wearing a Mac Miller T-shirt, a beanie and sweatpants. At 6 feet 3 inches, he towered over his mother and the infusion director who is administering his treatment. As she

prepared the medication, the infusion director asked what pain he was feeling on a scale from one to 10.

“It’s at an eight, but that’s only in my back and the rest of the body is a five,” Patrick said. “So really, really good.”

His baseline of pain on a daily basis is about a seven out of 10, he said.

It’s Patrick’s second day of the infusion therapy and, already, he’s reporting improved comfort. The treatment isn’t without side effects, however. He vomited the night before and on the way into the clinic. In the past, he’s experienced hallucinations, inability to eat, anxiety and memory loss from the treatment.

Every baseball day is a good day When asked about what parts of his day-to-day life bring him comfort and joy, Patrick has two answers: medication and baseball.

Patrick, who plays a variety of positions including first base and pitcher, wants to play in college with the long-term goal of being on a professional team.

Even though his education is online through Colorado Connections Academy, Patrick plays baseball for Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch.

“Baseball keeps him alive,” his mom said. “This is his passion, this is what makes him want to get up in the morning. ... Patrick cannot wait for morning workouts that start at 5:45 in the morning. He’s the kid that’s sprinting everywhere.”

When he first tried out for the team, Meg was terrified he wouldn’t make it because

of his myriad of medical issues, weekly doctor’s appointments and occasional challenges during physical activities.

“I’m like ‘Please, please don’t cut my kid’ — because he’s good, he’s really good,’” Meg said.

To his coaches, Patrick is just another athlete, said Ron Quintana, Mountain Vista’s head coach. What makes him stand out isn’t his constant battle with his health, but his deep discipline and fervent work ethic, he said.

“The other day we were working out and he didn’t have a ride to practice, ... so he ran from home,” Quintana said. “When I ask him to do something, he will sprint to it.”

As Meg knows, dealing with this disease as a parent can be devastating. Meg, who is in the process of separating from Patrick’s father, didn’t encourage Patrick to push through the pain before his diagnosis. Like any parent, she just wanted to help make the hurt go away. But once Meg learned what was wrong, her attitude flipped.

“If you don’t get up and do it, your muscles will atrophy and you’re stuck in that wheelchair forever,” she said. “CRPS is a move-it or lose-it proposal — I was not willing to let him waste away.”

Meg would take Patrick to the pool for aqua therapy while he was in the wheelchair and sit with him as he cried in pain as the water touched him. Today, Patrick still groans at the memories from those sessions, but he understands why his mom

pushed him to do it.

“When I got out of the pool,” Patrick said, “it would be a lot better.”

Over the years, Meg has encouraged other Ferocious Fighter parents to do the same for their kids with CRPS, and as soon as possible: The sooner treatment begins, the better the outcome for the child.

“To treat CRPS, you have to go against every instinct you have as a parent,” she said. “You have to make him do his physical therapy even though it hurts him and he’s crying. You have to say ‘Do it anyway.’”

Parents like Meg also have to work as an advocate for their child, learning everything they can about the mysterious illness, experimental treatments and possible drug side effects.

“We will walk into doctors’ offices and she will start talking and they’ll be like ‘You’re a nurse right?

Where did you go to medical school?’” Patrick said. “She’s a really good mom.”

As hard as Meg works to help Patrick, there’s only so much that can be done for the rare condition.

In February, before his most recent ketamine session, Patrick was experiencing the most intense pain he’s ever endured, he said.

But, he said, there’s a bright side.

“I’m at my worst right now. And I’m so happy to say that,” Patrick said before the treatment. “I’m still playing baseball, I’m being a normal teenager, I’m still hanging out with friends, suffering through school work, everything.”

Woman who died by jail suicide was shining light to many Family, friends express frustration about unanswered questions

The loss of a Highlands Ranch woman who died by suicide May 29 after a brief stay in the Douglas County jail has left her community reeling as loved ones grapple with the event and the questions that remain regarding her final hours.

MiChelle McGarry, 54, was found inside her cell during the suicide attempt on May 25, Memorial Day, about 1 p.m., according to a news release from the sheriff ’s office.

Hours before, McGarry’s sister, Linda Passamaneck, had pleaded with jail staff to allow her to speak with her sister or send her a message. She was told it wasn’t possible, she said.

“I would have wanted to say that I love her no matter what. And that I’d be here for her when she got out,” Passamaneck said. “I don’t know if it would have helped my sister but I would have liked that opportunity.”

“That’s what I want her to be remembered for,” Passamaneck said.

“She gave a lot to a lot of people.”

After she was discovered in her jail cell, McGarry was transported to Castle Rock Adventist Hospital and placed into the intensive care unit for four days before she died from the injuries.

“We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the McGarry family,” sheriff ’s office spokeswoman Lauren Childress said.

McGarry was arrested the night before on suspicion of domestic violence and third-degree assault, according to the release. Because of the Monday holiday, her hearing was set for the following day, May 26. Her suicide attempt was discovered on the holiday during a routine inmate welfare check in the jail, which is required every 30 minutes, Childress said.

Earlier that day, Passamaneck said, she was told by jail staff that if McGarry had her number and wanted to call, she would do so.

“I called first thing in the morning and that’s when I was told ‘we won’t give her a message and there’s no way you can reach her, and if she wants to talk to you, she can call. She will have a hearing tomorrow,’” Passamaneck said.

On its website, the jail offers video visits seven days per week.

Passamaneck was not informed of this possibility, she said. The sheriff ’s office — citing an ongoing investigation — declined to answer questions regarding inmate phone calls, including whether they were not available due to the holiday.

Her work was published in multiple peer-reviewed journals including the Urologic Nursing Journal, the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal and the Journal of Pediatric Adolescent Gynecology.

“She changed lives and is changing lives,” said Regis McGarry, her husband of eight years.

Her practice, which was inherited by her son, will continue to operate, Regis said.

McGarry, who was diagnosed with cancer twice in her life, once as a child and once as an adult, was known to many as a woman who always persevered.

“She had numerous health battles,” said Terri Ross, her friend and personal trainer. “Working with her, you could never even tell.

She pushed through them and was positive and strong.”

McGarry completed multiple triathlons in her adult life and was training for the National Senior Games at the time of her death, Regis said.

Her loved ones remember her as a pillar of strength, who often didn’t show the pain she was enduring.

“I don’t think anyone had any idea about some of the demons she obviously was battling,” Ross said.

Her husband adds that while she had her struggles, most people who knew her didn’t see that side of her.

“Only those people closest to MiChelle saw the ugly,” Regis said.

“MiChelle was complicated.”

remembered for all the good she did in other people’s lives.

“MiChelle was really special, she poured her heart into everything she cared about and so many people are amazed ... at all the things she’s done,” Regis said.

Unanswered questions For Passamaneck, there are still many unanswered questions about her sister’s death, she said. She was able to speak directly with Sheriff Tony Spurlock about the situation and was appreciative of what information he provided, she said.

Still, she hopes to see some changes in policy as a result of her sister’s death, she said.

“When you have someone in a situation like that and someone is trying to reach them, I don’t see why ... loved ones couldn’t reach out to them,” she said. “I’m not blaming anyone, I just can’t believe they can’t come up with a better system.”

2-million-gallon water storage tank underway Colorado Book

A 2-million-gallon underground water tank, which will be the final piece of major infrastructure for the regional Water Infrastructure and Supply Efficiency (WISE) project, is under construction in northwest Douglas County.

“This will be big enough to provide most of the (water) demands that would be necessary for Douglas County for a long time,” said Mary Kay Provaznik, general manager of Dominion Water and Sanitation.

The $5 million project will provide storage for drinking water to the customers of Dominion Water and fire-flow capacity for the Highway 85 corridor. About half of the capacity will go to emergency services, which can be shared in the region, according to a release from the water district.

The tank, which will hold as much water as three Olympic-size swimming pools, will be 30 feet tall and buried in an area between Roxborough Park and Louviers.

The tank will be the final major piece of the WISE water project, which began about seven years ago.

WISE is a partnership between South Metro Water Supply Authority, Denver Water and Aurora Water. The goal of the project is for these entities to share supplies and infrastructure to reduce the region’s reliance on nonrenewable water sources.

“The interest in developing in this area is now possible,” Provaznik said. “Nobody knew how they could develop because there was no way to get renewable water. Now there’s a choice.”

Construction on the High Zone Water Storage project began in April and is expected to be completed by the end of the year, she said.

“This area used to be thought of as the dry area,” she said. “And now, we’re the leaders on how to bring renewable water to areas.”

The Jefferson County team made about 10 arrests, said Sheriff Jeff Shrader, including “three or four” people found to be carrying weapons including guns. Shrader said he was unsure whether Jefferson County personnel deployed tear gas, but said he was aware of one instance of a deputy firing “less-lethal” rounds at a fleeing suspect.

Shrader said he understands the outrage at Floyd’s death.

“We all witnessed a murder in that video,” Shrader said, adding he supports many elements of a police reform bill making its way through the state General Assembly.

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock declined a request for an interview on the matter through a spokesperson. The department did not provide details about its response.

In an interview on other matters with CCM’s Elliott Wenzler, Spurlock decried the Floyd killing, saying: “There is no reasonable, rational reason for any police officer to use that kind of restraint on someone.”

Other departments’ responses to assist in Denver appear to have been more low-key.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office sent between 40 and 50 deputies for several nights, said Sheriff Tyler Brown, but said they fired no shots or tear gas and made no arrests.

Two Republicans are facing off in the party’s June 30 primary for Douglas County District 2 commissioner: Clint Dorris and George Teal. The winner will face unopposed Democrat Lisa Neal-Graves in November’s general election. Ballots were being mailed to voters starting June 8.

District 2 encompasses southern and western Douglas County, including Castle Rock, Castle Pines, Larkspur, Perry Park and Roxborough.

Q: What single issue do you think should be at the top of the Board of County Commissioners agenda in 2021?

Every elected official takes an oath of office to support the constitution of the United States and the State of Colorado. I believe it is imperative that we eliminate all other opportunities in statute that provides an unelected official or employee to override the decisions of our elected officials.

Lately, we have many citizens feeling marginalized by out-of-touch government decisions. Solutions include finding relief from heavy handed health department decrees and ensuring that enforcement of laws don’t violate constitutional rights like our 1st and 2nd Amendment rights. This should also include investigating Douglas County as a Home Rule county.

Q: If elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

“I don’t want to talk. I want to be about it,” Garcia said. “I want to be part of something that is very near and dear to my heart. My kids have dealt with racism before, and it’s not right.”

• In Golden, near the start of the “Vigil and March for Black Lives” on June 7, Golden City Councilwoman JJ Trout read the words of a black girl growing up in a multiracial family in the city.

“I know my friends and family love me, but I feel scared and people do not understand,” the girl had said.

Trout then shared the words the girl’s mother said she had recently told her white son, who had said he felt scared for his black sister.

“For white people, we know not to talk about it [racism], but we need to be uncomfortable to make change,” said the mom.

There were also several Golden police officers present at the march, including Police Chief Bill Kilpatrick.

On June 2, Kilpatrick released a letter calling Floyd’s murder “repulsive, appalling and unconscionable.”

As usual, the majority of fraudulent activity and source of complaints take place through robocalls, fake text messages, emails and online purchases.

Most of the circulating text messages and emails carry a COVID-19 theme, but they are nothing more than basic phishing schemes, which are a fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as user names, passwords, and credit card details.

Scammers reach out electronically to entice consumers to simply click on a link or open an attachment in order to access and harvest their personal information.

Seems others don’t always: There was a bloody incident right across the street, and we heard about something that happened in Central Park not too long ago.

I insist no one try to pet him when we’re out together. People think that cute dogs are innately good-natured.

Dachshunds were bred to hunt tunneling animals, specifically badgers.

Lately I have been donating and giving away things I have been holding on to for years. My college camera, for example. A Nikkormat “tank,” that I took everywhere with me until digital cameras the size of a pack of cigarettes came along.

WINNING Making our way WORDS through this world today seems like it will take everything we’ve got, doesn’t it?

And although this show and song first came out in 1982, the advice in those lyrics is still relevant today, “Taking a break from Michael Norton all your worries sure would help a lot.”

Great advice, and I know for some of us, that is easier said than done.

And then the question comes at the end of the first set of lyrics, “Wouldn’t you like to get away?” For many of us, that answer is a resounding yes. We have been staying at home with limited travel anywhere. When I hear people talking about getting away, it ranges

anywhere from getting on a plane and going somewhere tropical, or just being able to go see family and friends.

When we think about getting away, that typically includes some form of transportation. And not all forms of transportation have wheels or tires, but many of them do. Our bicycle, our car, and airplanes have wheels and tires.

Either way, with a flat tire, or a very small wheel, we will not get very far very fast as we try and make our way in the world today. And remember, it’s going to take everything we’ve got.

What does that look like? How do we give it everything we’ve got? Well it starts with balance in all the key areas of our lives. If you played along with the circle exercise above, you probably recognized where you are strong and identified areas where you need to apply some intentional effort to improve.

promising vaccines, treatments and products relating to the coronavirus. The email recipient is then directed to click on a link to a website where their information is obtained and compromised.

These emails ask for credit card information for products and services, which often never arrive.

Keep in mind, there are no current vaccines or treatments. If the solicitation is for a product or service, be careful. If truly interested, then research the company or organization on your own. Visit secure and official websites independently, not through the embedded links.

Confirm the sender’s identity. Look for typos and inaccuracies. While not all, many online messages and entities relating to COVID-19 are fake.

In addition, government agencies such as the IRS and Social Security Administration will never call, text or email you. These agencies will reach out to you through the mail, even during COVID-19.

No legitimate agency will ask you to pay anything for your stimulus check nor will they contact via phone, text or email demanding that you provide sensitive personal or financial information.

Finally, there has been a recent surge in the number of charitable and cofunding entities, particularly around the coronavirus. Many are fraudulent, illegitimate and nonexistent. Do your homework. Research. Is the entity legitimate? Do not feel rushed. This is your money. Do not send cash in the mail, gift cards, wire money or Bitcoin.

Never give confidential information.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Mail voting should be right A recent story from 9News hails Colorado as a leader in mail-in ballot voting (April 9). The law went into effect in 2013 and allows all voters to get a ballot in the mail.

In the last presidential election in 2016, nearly three-out-of-four voters returned their mail-in ballots in Colorado, the story noted.

President Trump has opposed mail-in balloting, calling it corrupt. He recently took to Twitter to oppose what he said was Michigan’s recent mailing of absentee ballots to the state’s voters. “This was done illegally and without authorization by a rogue Secretary of State. I will ask to hold up funding to Michigan if they want to go down this Voter Fraud path!” the president tweeted. Trump has threatened Nevada in a similar

way.

Americans in every state should be allowed to vote by mail if they choose to, especially in the middle of a pandemic and if they are worried about their health. Mail-in voting does not create measurable voter fraud, which is still rare in our system. It is a powerful moment in history right now and it is important that we stand up to him to ensure that everyone can access mail-in ballots if they choose.

Trump is worried about his reelection prospects, which is why he is eager to attack mail-in voting. We need a new administration that allows every American to use their voice to vote either in person or mail-in. Please vote for a change in November!

Residents are finding creative ways to date during the pandemic

ownsend Wenzler of Arvada is just getting used to his new home.

Wenzler, 23, moved out to Colorado from Arkansas last August, and he came only knowing some family members and friends who live in the state.

And as COVID-19 closed social places where Wenzler would go to look to find people to date, he and other residents throughout the Denver metro area turned to dating apps like Hinge, Bumble and Tinder to meet other people.

“I don’t think it’s anything crazy, it’s just how it is, and young people are young and dumb and going insane and just wanting to branch out and meet each other. It’s impossible without the bars, so thank God for dating apps,” said Wenzler.

Since mid-March, mobile dating apps like Tinder and Bumble, where users swipe through a feed of profiles to see who is interested in them, have seen an uptick in use.

BBC reported that on March 29, Tinder users made 3 billion swipes worldwide — a record for the app.

Other apps like Bumble reported that it saw a 16% increase in messages sent during the week ending on May 1 as opposed to the week ending on March 13. Bumble also has a voice call and video chat feature and reported that it saw a near 70% increase in video calls during the week ending on May 1 in comparison to the week ending on March 13.

Wenzler had a date over to his home that he met on Tinder to cook her dinner during the pandemic. He said he thinks people are bored, and because of that, he believes residents his age aren’t afraid to forgo social distancing recommendations.

“Half of you wants to social distance, while the other part of you is going insane. I had more success (dating) toward the end of (the stay-at-home order) just because initially, people were more freaked out and less willing to go on dates with people they didn’t know,” said Wenzler.

A different way of meeting people Meredith Gerdes of Denver also uses Bumble to meet other people for dating. She believes residents who are looking to date are realizing how dependent they are on bars and restaurants to meet someone.

“The important message to bring across is no one is meeting anyone in a normal setting,” she said.

Gerdes said dating during the pandemic is restoring a safer environment for women to meet men. She said before the pandemic, some of her friends would go over to men’s houses after their only interactions were on Bumble.

“Rather than meeting someone with dimmed lights and alcohol at a restaurant or bar, you’re meeting in the park in broad daylight. It’s kind of cool because you are forced to be put into a different environment, so therefore, it could almost change the dynamic for whatever the relationship might be,” Gerdes said.

Gerdes has gone on a date to a park with a man who she met on Bumble during the COVID-19 era. She also added that before the pandemic, she met a man on Bumble who was visiting from San Diego, and although he is back in California, the two have been Facetiming and getting to know each other more.

“I am abiding to social distancing, and it has helped me learn more about myself. I feel good coming out of this knowing what I want and getting to learn more about myself,” said

Gerdes. “I think COVID-19 has enabled (residents) to get to know each other more.”

Forming a new relationship during the pandemic Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Sam Whitley met his now girlfriend Chelsea Benavides through a friend.

The two went out together to a restaurant, hit it off and decided they wanted to go out together again.

But COVID-19 forced restaurants to close, so Whitley and Benavides ordered take-out food and ate together at a park.

“After our second date, we decided to do social distance dating because we wanted to be cautious with what’s going and be safe. For a good while, we didn’t see each other at all,” said Whitley.

Wanting to still keep the connection with Benavides, Whitley dropped off a care package to her that included ice cream and dinner. After that, the two spent time video chatting and did online tours of places like Machu Picchu — while still keeping a distance from each other.

Whitley said his big idea was to set up a projector in his driveway with a screen. Benavides sat in her car on Whitley’s driveway, and he sat outside of it and kept a distance as the two watched a movie together.

“I think my mentality was trying to figure out what I would do on a typical date and how I can modify it so that we can still do a date like a typical one in a way to still social distance,” he said.

Whitley said dating during the pandemic has been a crazy time, but it has forced him to think outside the box in terms of setting up dates with Benavides. He added that it has been worth it, because he has had a great time with her.

“I feel like it allowed us to connect, and it caused us to have deeper conversations. It was a time to spend at a park or watch the sunset and catch up on each other’s days and to get to know each other and what our lives are like,” said Whitley. “It was really nice to be able to connect, and because there was so much other stuff going on, we really got to know each other. I really appreciate that.”

Having served on the Castle Rock Town Council since 2014, I’ve been honored to represent my neighbors while also working for the residents of Douglas County.

As councilman, I cut taxes, reduced fees, and protected our God-given rights. I also helped build better neighborhoods, worked to manage the negative impacts of growth, and became known as a fierce advocate for my district.

I’ve also had the opportunity to serve on boards and commissions to include DRCOG, the Cherry Creek Water Authority, E-470 Authority, Chatfield Water Authority (Chairman), South I-25 Steering Committee, and the RTD Re-Imagine Committee.

Q: What single issue do you think should be at the top of the Board of County Commissioners agenda in 2021?

If you would have asked me that question six months ago, my answer would be different; but given the events of the last four months, I believe it’s time to form our own county health department.

Joining Tri-County made sense 30 years ago (when cows outnumbered people), but over my last six years on town council, I’ve seen them advocate for policies and positions that do not represent our values.

And the recent lockdown proved it’s time to form a county health department that answers to us -- not to outside special interests and not to Adams and Arapahoe counties.

Q: If elected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

Just as we formed our own judicial district, we need our own county health department. But I’d also like to see our county reinsti-

tute some form of the Taxpayers Bill of Rights (TABOR) so that we can maintain our county finances just as our municipalities do.

And we need to become a Home Rule County so that we can have more local control - which would afford us the opportunity to become a true 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County - while also giving us the ability to resist the liberal overreach we see every day from our State Legislature and Governor.

Q: How will you accomplish these things?

Just as I’ve done over the last six years: I’ll work with my colleagues and municipal partners while leveraging the relationships I’ve built over the last 20 years of living in this amazing county. And I’ll respect the role of staff and policy leaders, while also keeping government limited and bureaucracy in check.

I am a fierce advocate for my district - and as commissioner, that won’t change. I will always be accountable to the voters, and, just as I’ve done over the last six years, I will be responsive, forward-leaning and 100% committed to the work.

Q: What do you see as the biggest challenge to the future of Douglas County and its citizens?

Again - my answer would have been different 6 months ago. Back then, I’d say protecting our liberty and keeping government in check.

And while I still believe we can always do better when it comes to keeping government out of our dayto-day lives, today I’d say the most important challenge - that needs to be addressed first - is becoming Home Rule.

We can’t afford another economic lockdown and we need to protect ourselves from overreach of a state government that doesn’t align with our values and priorities. We need to do a better job of keeping Denver interests out of Douglas County.

SPORTS Mustangs coach is raring to go

Football squad should be contender if season gets to leave gate

Ponderosa High School football coach Jaron Cohen is anxious about the potential upcoming football season even though he hasn’t been able to have any in-person contact with his players.

Guidelines from the Douglas County School District and the Colorado High School Activities Association prevent any in-person contact between players and coaches for at least the time being.

“We haven’t been able to talk to any of our kids since March 13,” recalled Cohen. “We had some Hudl messages and some Zoom meetings to check on them and give them some tasks they could voluntarily do on their own.

They were on a virtual workout schedule. The kids are free to go to personal trainers if they want to, but the main thing Douglas County has said is that no Douglas County coach can be with them.”

The guidelines are necessary but hard to handle, says the Parker school’s coach.

“It does make it a little tougher, but we’ve had a few staff meetings,” added Cohen. `We’ve just said we know we can’t be around the players. When we know we can practice, then we’ll have to hammer out everything, and I’m confident in our staff ’s ability to get us ready for that first game, whenever that day might be. We’re staying positive and flexible.

“It’s frustrating, and part of the reason why you coach is that you love the camaraderie of your staff and your players, the teamwork and the community service projects we do in the summer. That’s all kind of been put on hold, but you can only control what

So Cohen and the Ponderosa players are playing a waiting game to see when practices might open and games might begin.

“As of now there’s been talk of a season on time,” said Cohen.

“There’s been talk about a delayed season and I know some states are exploring flip-flopping fall and spring sports based on what they decide the risk is. To me, that’s not ideal, but if that’s what we have to do, that’s what we have to do. You kind of feel like the CHSAA was getting hit a little unfairly when spring sports were canceled because this whole thing went from zero to 100 in a week.

“They are working on some alternatives and that took some of my anxiety away. A lot has been put on our senior leaders to stay on their teammates about staying ready. I’m not worried at all about our kids staying ready.”

Pondo has gone 37-10 the past five seasons after Cohen started his Mustangs’ coaching record with a 5-6 record in 2014. Cohen, who has also been the head coach at Liberty and Aurora Hinkley, might have one of his best Ponderosa teams if the 2020 season does commence.

“We return a ton of players that will be three-year starters,” said Cohen. “We’ve been back-to-back league champs and been to the state

semifinals and quarters the past two years. Those teams were actually young. When we have a season, we’re bringing back a three-year starter at quarterback, running back, receiver, a couple linemen and linebackers so we should be real tough.

“It’s not like we’ve been a 4-6 team.

Now we have a three-year starter at QB (Jack Hanenburg) and we’ve won 18 games the past two years. We’re bringing back 16 starters. Obviously the goal every year is to win league, win state and play to our potential.

This year I do feel we have a team that is as talented as we’ve had. There’s room for improvement in the playoffs.

We’re excited to get rolling.”
