Catholic churches begin holding limited in-person services Step comes as restrictions begin to loosen for all places of worship

Parishioners of St. Mark Catholic Church in Highlands Ranch lined up for Mass the weekend of May 16 for the first time in months.

They wore masks, stood significantly spaced apart and prepared for an unusual service amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The church hosted four services over the weekend, each limited to 80 people, all of whom were required to register beforehand.

As they arrived, they were taken through propped-open doors to their assigned sections of the church, pre-planned to allow for substantial spacing between family units and groups of 10.

“We’re happy to be back,” some churchgoers said as they entered the building.

However, the return to in-person worship did not come off without a hitch. The weekend services were temporarily canceled the Friday before they were set to take place after Tri-County Health Department was alerted that the services would allow 80 people, while the public health

discuss an apporpriate plan to move forward with the service, said Mellissa Sager with the health department.

Soon after, the parish announced the Masses would resume as planned.

“It did work out and they’re operating safely,” Sager said about St. Mark. “From what we are seeing, these places of worship are focused on having a thorough plan to protect folks.”

On Sunday, May 17, a church staff member said they’ve received some hostile backlash from the commu-

nity as a result of reopening.

The Douglas County commissioners, in coordination with Tri-County, submitted a variance request May 18 to the state asking to be allowed to reopen gyms, places of worship and restaurants under specific guidelines. A response was expected within a week of submission. Governor Jared Polis was also expected to soon release a new set of procedures for the state’s places of worship.

Senior Center on pause as budget drop looms Decrease could also impact debt payoff

The long-awaited Highlands Ranch Senior Center project has been indefinitely put on hold as the metro district grapples with a possible $4.5 million revenue decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a May 20 virtual study session of the metro district’s board of directors, staff informed the board of the latest financial forecasting, which included projections from the Douglas County assessor’s office.

The assessor’s predictions include a forecasted drop of 5% in residential values and a 25% decrease in commercial values, according to the presentation by Stephanie Stanley, the metro district’s director of finance and administration.

The metro district, which collects the most of its revenue from property taxes, could see up to 23% in decline of revenue as a result, Stanley said. That’s why the metro district staff recommended pausing projects like the senior center, construction of a new pickleball court and retiring the district’s debt early.

“The Metro District’s priority is to sustain the existing services and programs and properly maintain our infrastructure,” Stanley said in an emailed statement after the meeting.

The senior center project will

likely be revisited early next year, once the metro district knows just how much property values have decreased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, said Terry Nolan, general manager of HRMD. There is no formal vote expected on this decision in upcoming meetings.

“We were not expecting what was announced,” said Sue Frommelt, president of the Highlands Ranch senior club. “I’m disappointed.”

Frommelt and other seniors are hoping that the district can find some way to still move forward with the project without having to spend much money, she said.

However, so far, the district plans to completely put the center on hold.

“This is a project that has been bantered about for 10 years and for the last three, it’s been something that is being worked on,” she said.

“It has taken a long time to get where we were and basically, we had the rug pulled out from under our feet.”

While Frommelt understands the reasoning behind the decision, she fears that the paused on the project could stretch well into the future.

“We wonder how long it’s going to sit there,” she said. “Is it going to go on the back burner for a few years?”

The board will decide in 2021 if their financial woes will allow them to follow through on another longterm plan: Paying off the metro district’s debt four years early.

“Maybe it will turn around,” Frommelt said. “Maybe they won’t take as much of a hit as they’re anticipating.”

When these excavations began, Tel

Shimron had been the largest unexcavated site in Israel.

After three seasons of excavations, interrupted by one season of laboratory study, numerous artifacts, features, and structures have been exposed that tell the story of this ancient site that sits at the crossroads between coastal and interior sites in the ancient land of Israel.

As of 2019, the excavations at Tel Shimron have established that people have lived here since at least the Early Bronze Age, approximately 5,000 years ago. Tucker describes the purpose of the excavations at Tel Shimron, the methods used, the results after three years of excavations, and the manner in which these results can be used to understand better the interactions among ancient populations in the region.

Officials defend reporting of COVID-19 death toll Polis, health department respond to GOP lawmaker’s claim of inflation

After a Colorado lawmaker questioned the state’s reporting of how many Coloradans have died from COVID-19, Gov. Jared Polis said he was frustrated with the discrepancy as well.

When Polis found out that people who tested positive but died of something else were included in the state’s death total, he said officials should report that total to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as is standard, but should also report to the public the lower number of deaths due directly to COVID-19, the governor said at a May 20 news conference.

In a May 15 news release, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment explained that its data included deaths among all people who had COVID-19 at the time of death.

That included deaths for which “the cause or causes may not have been attributed to COVID-19 on the death certificate,” the release said.

“This is the standard way states report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”

“We know this virus can be deadly and can complicate other serious medical conditions and hasten death,” Eric France, chief medical officer at the state health department, said in the release.

“As public health practitioners, we need to look at data that helps us understand disease transmission and protect people.”

A day earlier, a Douglas County state lawmaker requested that the area’s district attorney investigate the state health department, accusing the agency of illegally changing death certificates.

State Rep. Mark Baisley, a Republican from Roxborough Park, made the request to 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler in a letter dated May 14, after a family forwarded Baisley a letter from a Centennial senior living facility that raised the question. The letter was from the senior living facility to residents.

“Falsely inflating the number of deaths due to COVID-19 adversely impacts the professional reputation of nursing homes, hospitals and health care workers while creating undue fear for families,” Baisley’s letter to Brauchler said.

The letter from Someren Glen, a

senior living community with multiple levels of care, stated that the state health department planned to “override some of our attending physician’s rulings and reclassify some resident passings.”

In the health department’s news release, the department “emphasized that it does not unilaterally change information on death certificates and does not question or try to change a physician’s diagnosis or causes-of-death determination.”

It is not uncommon for state officials to use definitions that differ from death certificate coding, Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist, told reporters on a May 20 news conference call.

As of May 15, the state reported 1,150 deaths among people who have COVID-19. The number of deaths confirmed to have been caused by COVID-19 was 878 as of May 9, as reported by the CDC, according to the news release. The data the state shares online, and to the CDC, is shared for diseasetracking purposes, the release said.

As of May 21 — reporting numbers received through May 20 — the Colorado totals had grown to 1,310 deaths among people who had COVID-19 and 1,062 deaths due to COVID-19.

“I think the more information we can provide, the greater the public trust, and we always want to err on

the side of (transparency),” Polis said at the May 20 news conference. The state’s COVID-19 website “didn’t have racial data; we added that. It didn’t have enough geographic data; we added that.”

Neither method of counting deaths accounts for “people that we missed altogether, that probably died from COVID that aren’t included in any number because they haven’t been confirmed by a coroner or autopsy,” Polis said at a May 18 news conference.

He added: “The only number that’s not reported are the ones we don’t know about because we don’t know about them.”

The DA’s office announced May 15 that it would look into whether any death certificates were “willfully and falsely altered,” according to a release from the office. Misdemeanor charges could be filed if so.

The DA’s office had not given any updates about the case as of the morning of May 22, according to Vikki Migoya, spokeswoman for the office. She did not confirm whether the DA’s office was investigating the claim at that time.

“As always, at the conclusion of any legal proceedings, District Attorney Brauchler will be eager to answer any and all questions,” the office’s May 15 release said. “The integrity of the judicial process must come first.”

Alleged Tri-County vandal has attention-seeking past Pesch made headlines in 2017 for apparent false murder confession

The man who police say repeatedly vandalized Tri-County Health Department’s Aurora offices and threatened staff over the COVID-19 shutdowns has a long history of attention-seeking behavior involving law enforcement — including confessing to a high-profile murder case in Elbert County that ended with dropped charges in 2019.

Dan Pesch, 36, was arrested by Aurora police on May 18 on suspicion of one count of criminal mischief, a class 5 felony, and misdemeanor counts of harassment and defacing property.

Pesch remained in custody at the Arapahoe County jail as of May 21.

His bond, originally set at $50,000, was reduced to $5,000 on May 20. His next scheduled court appearance is set for June 23.

According to an affidavit in the case, police believe Pesch threw rocks through windows at Tri-County Health’s offices at Chambers Road and Hampden Avenue in Aurora on three occasions — on April 15, April 18 and April 20 — and followed up

with threatening messages from his personal Facebook account, railing against the agency’s stay-at-home order in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tri-County Health serves Arapahoe, Douglas and Adams counties.

“Best part of your policy is that I can keep vandalizing the (expletive) out of your building and the cops won’t do (expletive) about it lol,” said one message on Pesch’s Facebook account directed to Tri-County Health. “Spray paint and broken windows are just the beginning (expletive).”

Pesch returned several times in early May to write vulgar messages on the building’s doors, police say, following up with more Facebook messages.

“Hope you’re enjoying putting small businesses under,” said a May 2 message from Pesch’s Facebook account. “Enjoy your broken windows (expletive).”

Stakeout leads to arrest Undercover officers said they staked out the building and arrested Pesch after encountering him outside the building on May 8. Officers transported him to an Aurora hospital, where staff gave him two doses of a sedative because of his “combative behavior,” according to the affidavit.

Pesch at that point was arrested on suspicion of failure to obey a lawful order and resisting arrest, according to an Aurora Police spokesperson, but he was released from the hospital and not taken to jail because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The building was vandalized again on May 11. An Aurora police detective called Pesch, who reportedly ranted against Tri-County’s stay-at-home order.

Pesch told the detective that TriCounty officials “deserve to pay” for the impacts of the shutdown order, according to the affidavit: “They’re just not getting the message,” Pesch told the detective. “So, I just have to keep increasing the intensity.”

The next day, Tri-County Health received another message from Pesch’s Facebook account: “Cops can’t be posted at your building every night. I’ll get you, you (expletive). All of you.”

Another message from Pesch’s account, sent on May 13, said, “Watch out (expletive). It’s coming. You have destroyed lives. Payback’s going to be (an expletive).”

Warrant issued Aurora Police obtained a warrant for Pesch’s arrest on May 15.

Aurora officers again spotted Pesch outside the Tri-County Health building at about 8:15 p.m. on May 18, according to a department spokesperson. Pesch allegedly fled on foot when officers approached him but he was apprehended after a short chase.

Pesch was arrested on the outstanding warrant and on suspicion of failure to obey a lawful order and resisting arrest.

A search of Pesch’s criminal record showed Pesch is accused of breaking windows or destroying property in at least seven other incidents in 2019, including at Denver’s Auraria Campus, an East Colfax bank, and an Aurora church.

Pesch confessed to several of the incidents, according to the affidavit.

Most of the cases are ongoing, according to court records.

Pesch previously made headlines in Elbert County in December 2017, when the Elbert County Sheriff ’s Office announced Pesch had been

charged with murder in the 2010 death of Kiowa High School teacher Randy Wilson.

Pesch had repeatedly confessed to murdering Wilson in a series of Facebook messages and in-person interviews with Elbert County investigators, as well as in cryptic text messages to Greenwood Village police, rambling handwritten notes left at Southwest Plaza shopping mall, and handwritten messages scrawled on the walls of his Littleton-area apartment, according to Colorado Community Media reports at the time. Pesch’s behavior prompted his partner to leave the state with their two young daughters.

But once in custody in Elbert County, Pesch recanted his confession to murder, according to CCM reports. Further, his confession did not match physical evidence in the case, Pesch’s DNA was nowhere to be found on the evidence, and Pesch’s adoptive father provided an alibi for the night Wilson died.

During the case, a CCM investigation revealed that Pesch had a long history of falsely confessing to crimes, including a series of cabin burglaries in Chaffee County in 2010 and an apparent reference to a then-unsolved 2009 murder of a Saguache County man, a slaying for which another man has since been convicted.

Pesch’s public defender in the Elbert County case argued that his confession and strange behavior were motivated by mental illness and drug abuse.

Prosecutors dropped the murder charge against Pesch in the Wilson case in February 2019, more than a year after he was arrested. Pesch pleaded guilty to felony attempted escape, a charge incurred when he broke away from arresting officers outside the Elbert County Jail in 2017.

As part of his probation imposed in Elbert County District Court, Pesch was required to complete a full psychiatric evaluation and comply with any recommended treatment, complete a substance abuse treatment program, attend cognitive behavioral therapy, submit to random drug tests and maintain employment of at least 40 hours a week.

Pesch’s last listed address was The Recovery Center, a sober-living facility in Denver run by the Mental Health Center of Denver.

Park Meadows welcomes shoppers back inside Customers roam mall’s hallways following 2-month shutdown

Metro Denver’s largest indoor shopping mall reopened for business May 24, under rules designed to protect customers’ health, including mandatory mask use.

Park Meadows’ reopening was limited, with about 30 of its roughly 185 stores welcoming shoppers. But it was the first time that customers were able to stroll the Lone Tree mall’s interior corridors and step into shops without outside entrances since late March. That’s when the mall complex shut its doors by state order amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Some of the mall’s big anchor stores had already reopened in recent weeks, and some merchants were offering curbside pickup, but until May 24 the mall’s interior spaces were off limits.

“Gradually, we’ll get the rest of the stores open throughout the week,” Kelly told Brian Willie of Rocky Mountain PBS. “It’ll take us a few weeks to get everybody up and open and all of our protocols in place.”

“It was difficult to be closed for such a long time,” Kelly said. She sees the reopening as being important to the local economy, with the mall being both a major employer and taxpayer.

The mall reopened after state health officials May 22 granted a variance requested by Douglas County officials, exempting the mall as well as county restaurants, gyms and houses of worship from state restrictions under various safety conditions.

Mall executives and local officials had been pushing to re-open the interior corridors of the mall to allow shoppers to access stores that lack

outdoor entrances for in-person shopping. Some of the mall’s anchor tenants and other stores had previously re-opened on a limited basis.

Houses of worship also covered by state variance order

Colorado’s top public-health official agreed May 22 to allow the immediate limited reopening of indoor operations at restaurants across Douglas County as well as houses of worship, gyms and the Park Meadows mall under various conditions.

The approval came in a two-page letter trom Jill Hunsaker Ryan, executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, to the Board of Douglas County Commissioners.

The letter was in response to a request to the CDPHE by commissioners for a waiver from state requirements imposed during the coronavirus crisis that would allow the facilities to reopen.

In her letter, Ryan said the waiver “is limited to the operations of the Park Meadows Mall, ... restaurants, houses of worship, and gyms; in all other respects, the requirements of the Safer at Home Executive Order

and Public Health Order remain in effect for Douglas County.”

Along with her variance, Ryan set various limits on occupancy. She said confined indoor spaces must be restricted to 50% of their posted occupancy-code limit not to exceed 175 people at a time and allowing for at least 28 square feet of space per person.

County officials in seeking the variance had proposed that restaurants would require employees to wear masks, while patrons would wear masks until seated. Restaurants also would encourage diners to make advance reservations and wait outside until their table is ready. And seating would be limited to 10 per table for families and six for mixed groups.

At houses of worship, masks would be required under the county variance proposal, although congregants could remove them once inside if they are farther than 6 feet from anyone else.

As for Park Meadows, Ryan’s letter stated: “It is critical that the indoor common areas be well-managed at all times such that no gatherings are occurring and instead customers are moving from one destination to the next, and admitted into each confined indoor retail space as permitted based SEE COUNTY, P14

Local nurse receives accolade I am 40 years old and my husband Jeremy and our 8 and 10-year-old daughters and I moved to Highlands Ranch in December 2018. Our family was in need for an adventure, so in 2017 we took a three-week vacation through New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. We absolutely fell in love with the mountains. That trip convinced us that Colorado was the place to be for outdoor fun and to improve the quality of life for our girls.

Being a nurse, I’m able to move to just about any part of the country for work. Jeremy was able to transfer jobs from Lockheed Martin in Texas to the local branch near Waterton Canyon. I lucked out finding a position working for UCHealth, I helped open the hospital in June of 2019 and have enjoyed working here from day one. Somehow, UCHealth Highlands Ranch has managed to find and hire the best of the best staff and I am privileged to be able to work alongside them.

An intensive care nurse I am an ICU nurse at UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital. My favorite part of being a nurse is

making a difference in patients and families lives while they are going through a difficult situation. I try to make their experience as comfortable and pleasant as possible. I know what a difference a friendly face and a positive attitude can do for people in stressful situations so I do my best to provide that to our patients.

The Daisy Award I was completely blindsided by the award. When I realized I was receiving the Daisy Award I became very nervous because I do not like being the center of attention and have never been great at taking compliments. The Daisy Award “was established to celebrate the extraordinary compassion nurses provide their patients and families every day” and is the ultimate compliment in nursing.

I truly enjoy being a nurse and helping my patients, it is what I was destined to do with my life and I hope that shows through in my daily work.

Working in a pandemic COVID-19 has presented many difficulties for patients, families, and staff. Being a healthcare professional during this crisis has been taxing on our mental health.

Most of us go to bed thinking about work and wake up thinking about work. We are highly concerned for our family’s well-being, the thought of bringing this home

to my husband, kids, or mothersin-law causes me extreme anxiety.

I wish most people understood that this is an awful disease process.

Not only does COVID-19 cause excessive suffering to the patients but the families are in dire circumstances as well. Imagine your mother being in the hospital on her death bed and not being able to hold her hand or spend those last few precious moments with her, that is a nightmare that has come true because of this pandemic.

Fun facts and hobbies We moved to Colorado to enjoy the mountains and all of the outdoor access. Our family loves to camp and drive in the mountains. I grew up salt-water fishing, I would love to make fresh-water fly-fishing my new hobby but I’ll need to learn how first.

Something people might not know about me is that I grew up deep-sea fishing and traveling throughout Mexico and Central America. I’ve had some really amazing adventures and neardeath experiences with my mom, she taught me the importance of pushing my limits and not being afraid to try new things.

Channel-surfing once was an exercise in mobility

ugene Polley, the inventor of the first wireless remote control for television, died on May 12, 2012, QUIET at the age of 96. His wife found him in DESPERATION the family room between the couch cushions.

High on just about everyone’s list of “What Makes Life Worth Living” is Polley’s little device.

Beforehand - some Craig Marshall of you will remember - viewers had to Smith get up, walk to the television, and turn knobs to change the channel, increase or decrease

the volume, or turn the set off.

That inconvenience meant changing channels wasn’t done very often.

Additionally, there were no means to pause, fast-forward, or reverse anything that was being watched or to record a program to be watched in the future.

If “Ozzie and Harriet” was broadcast on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., that was it. You watched it or you missed it.

Something else is different now.

Commercials in the 1950s and 1960s were one minute in length and devoted to one product. That increased to 90 seconds and more than one.

Commercial interruptions now last up to five minutes — or longer — and may feature as many as a dozen products.

The very first remote control, called “Lazy Bones,” was introduced

by Zenith in 1950. It was connected to a television by a wire.

Polley’s wireless invention, called the “Flash-Matic,” had limited capabilities: receiver on or off, channel up or down, and volume up or down.

There’s more to this than just the development of a handheld device.

The remote control has changed how we do a lot of things.

We are a very impatient, spoiled population, and that handheld device is partly responsible.

Does anyone watch a film the way it was meant to be watched? Nonstop without breaks for phone calls, snacks, walking the dog, or making out?

It’s unlikely.

I should know better. I was a film history minor in college. But I am guilty of watching 10 or 15 minutes of a film, pausing it, and looking around to see what else is on.

It’s unconscionable. Forgive me, D.W. Griffith.

I know it’s hard to imagine, but in the 1950s viewers would sit in front of a television for an hour and a half, not budge, and watch the entirety of a film or three television programs.

Popular programs would be sequenced accordingly, so an audience watching a situation comedy on NBC wouldn’t touch the dial and would continue watching NBC until SEE SMITH, P11

out overwhelmingly points to the great advantages of wearing masks: In societies where people wear masks and social distance, cases of COVID drop 80%.

The backlash against wearing masks is not only deadly, it is ironic.

ery early on as we became reliant on computers and technology, software engineers and people in the information technology world WINNING quickly recognized WORDS that the value of the data being fed into the system was only as good as the source of the data. They relied on and shared with us their philosophy of “garbage in garbage out,” or what became known as Michael Norton GIGO. It is pretty much the same way with people too. What we feed our mind impacts what we do, who we are, and what we pursue. As Earl Nightingale said, “We become what we think about.” And with the amount of time we are currently spending watching the news, watching our social media feeds and posts, and participating in exchanges, comments, and

chats, all of that data and information is being processed and consumed by our heart and our head.

And it becomes what we think about.

Our goal is to prevent GIGO, avoid letting the garbage into our minds and into our hearts that can tear us down mentally and emotionally. And equally as important is that we do not become the ones putting any garbage out there ourselves. The source of our data and what we feed into our system and share with others should be filtered through the lens of the good, the clean, the pure, the powerful, and the positive. Zig Ziglar talked about this long before the idea of fake news and social media ever existed.

As a matter of fact, Zig Ziglar said it this way, “If you dump garbage in, garbage will come out.

The person who dumps garbage into your mind will do considerably more damage than the one who dumps garbage on your floor.”

Now I am not advocating we completely avoid the news or social media.

As a matter of fact, I have my sources of information and news that I trust, like the newspaper you are reading right now. And I also enjoy the postings and comments that I see from the people I am connected to and in the groups that I am a part of. If you would like to know what those groups are, send me an email and I am happy to share where I spend my time on social media and some of the other sources of good information where I find value.

If you do find me on social media — many of you have already connected with me — you will see that I never get in the middle of anyone’s argument.

We can make this another successful survival story.

This is the toughest period of history that I, and many of you, have experienced, but I see an immediate, compelling opportunity to grow wiser and kinder and even make a positive contribution.

Creative souls face challenges amid pandemic

aybe they’re waiters and waitresses. Maybe they drive for Lyft. Maybe they teach their own art classes.

Whatever an artist’s gig is, it likely was turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic’s arrival in Colorado.

“It’s hard enough being an artist in general,” said Collin Parson, director of galleries and the curator at the Arvada Center, a nonprofit arts hub. He’s seen festivals and classes get canceled that often serve as a financial lifeline for people like one of his colleagues, a ceramics instructor at the center.

“A lot of artists piece together to make a life,” said Parson, a 37-year-old Lakewood resident who also works as a professional artist. He added: The fallout from COVID-19 has affected artists’ livelihoods “as artists and as people.”

In mid-March, Colorado ordered bars and restaurants to stop dine-in service for 30 days. Theaters — including movie and performance venues and concert halls — also were among the businesses required to shutter.

The state soon extended that shutdown, and it was still unclear as of mid-May when theaters could open back up. Bans on gatherings have made event cancellations of all kinds commonplace.

Theater gets help Amid the economic spiral, relief funds and other assistance for artists have come forward to ease the blow.

In the case of Miners Alley Playhouse in downtown Golden, the city government and local organizations stepped up to support the theater, whose landlord provided a month of free rent, said Len Matheo, executive and artistic director at Miners Alley Playhouse.

The “small, mighty theater” prides itself on connecting people through the art of live shows, Matheo said.

“People come together to have a theater experience, whether that makes them laugh, cry (or) think.”

Since Miners Alley shut its doors, its normal income streams dried up.

Roughly $20,000 in donations since then have helped keep it afloat — its yearly budget is about $730,000 — and it also snagged a federal Paycheck Protection Program loan to help pay its handful of staff for two months.

But the roughly 100 actors, designers and other artists Miners Alley hires as contract workers in a typical year are having to navigate a more treacherous economic path.

Artist Koko Bayer has placed the hearts throughout the Denver metro area — including a 12-foot-by-12-foot version of it on the Arvada Center building, according to Collin Parson, the center’s director of galleries and curator. “It’s things like those that give me hope and energy to keep getting art out there,” Parson said.

Unemployment, relief funds, other resources

“These actors are out of work. A lot of theater actors, their other job is in the restaurant business because of the flexibility of the hours,” Matheo said. Contract workers have had challenges accessing unemployment benefits because of conflicts caused by their other sources of income, Matheo added.

Pandemic unemployment assistance has worked out for Emily Tuckman, an artistic director and actor with the Boulder-based Misfits Theater Company.

“Right now, I have very little work,” said Tuckman, who lives in Boulder and whose company performs in Boulder and Denver. “Ordinarily, I tutor

SAT and ACT prep, neither of which is happening right now. Additionally, I’m a teaching artist,” but schools are closed.

The federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provided pandemic unemployment assistance to those not ordinarily eligible for unemployment benefits, including gig workers— such as Lyft drivers — and the self-employed and contract workers, among others whose work was interrupted by COVID-19 in other ways. Identity comes into question Even with the welcome financial assistance, Tuckman, whose “entire identity stems from being able to act, produce and teach,” has struggled with the identity of being a stay-athome mom, she said. Others are grappling with “the loneliness of solitude, and the unknown,” Tuckman said.

“It is so hard not to know when we will be safe and when society and the arts will come back,” Tuckman said.

“I’ve gotten this message both from friends, and from fellow Misfits. We are all ready to get back out there and work emotionally and physically, but there’s this huge wall in the form of a pandemic, and we all want to keep one another, and ourselves, safe.”

Still, Parson, the Arvada Center curator, wants to project a message of hope. He pointed to the center’s call for submissions that any artist in Colorado can enter for free. It aims to portray artists’ thoughts on the pandemic and how they are responding to it, Parson said. It’s called “Viral Influence,” and submissions will be considered for inclusion in a physical exhibition at the center in 2021.

Crisis spurs change Some people who are artists but haven’t had time for art in the bustle of everyday life may be able to work on art amid society’s halt, Parson said.

Parson has seen unfamiliar names responding to the call for submissions — an exciting development for him. Some artists have “exploded with creativity” from reading the news, learning about the virus and simply being outdoors.

“I know a couple artists I’ve talked to who think this’ll be a cultural renaissance, like (with) World War I or World War II,” Parson added.

Tuckman also believes current challenges could strengthen the arts.

“I just think the Denver community is such a special community,” Tuckman said. “I really, truly, believe that we will get through this, and we will be stronger as an artistic community because of it.”

Great American Beer Festival to move online For first time, Denver suds celebration won’t happen in-person

Pour one out for the Great American Beer Festival. The annual competition held in Denver won’t happen at the Colorado Convention Center

Sept. 24-26 as planned and will instead go online only on Oct. 16-17.

The Convention Center has turned into an overflow hospital, albeit an empty one for now, making it unavailable to host big events.

“While we are disappointed to not be gathering in Denver this fall for the craft beer community’s annual big tent event, the health and safety of our attendees, brewers, volunteers, judges, and employees is and always has been our top priority,”

said Bob Pease, president and CEO of the Boulder-based Brewers Association, in a statement.

“As the world is still greatly affected by the spread of COVID-19 and will continue to be affected for the foreseeable future, we must stay true to our priorities and pursue other ways to host GABF.” GABF organizers say the online event is still being planned but will likely include “beer tastings, conversations with brewers, local brewery

activations, and at-home beer and food pairing deliveries.”

The competition aspect of the festival will continue, with more than 100 judges sorting through some 7,000 expected entries to award the famed GABF gold, silver and bronze medals.

At 1.58 million square feet of gross leasable space, Park Meadows is metro Denver’s biggest indoor mall and the region’s second-largest shopping complex of any type, behind Aurora’s 1.7 million-square-foot outdoor Southlands Shopping Center, according to the Denver Business Journal.

On May 24, Park Meadows welcomed patrons into its corridors for the first time in two months, and about 30 stores reopened.

The Douglas County variance will remain in effect until statewide restrictions are lifted, barring a new surge in cases in the county.

On May 25, Gov. Jared Polis said he would allow restaurants statewide to resume dine-in service as of May 27 with a 50% occupancy limit indoors.

“The data and information included in your request demonstrates that the Tri-County Health Department ... has a strong public health surveillance system, sufficient hospital capacity, and appropriate thresholds for rolling back the variance if conditions worsen,” Ryan said in her letter. TriCounty oversees public health matters in Douglas County.

Ryan said in her letter that the waiver will be “automatically rescinded” if Douglas County sees a spike in new COVID-19 cases or hospitalizations.

She said any two of these factors in Douglas County could trigger rescinding the order: • “A 20% increase in positive cases in 3-day rolling average over a 14-day period, • “More than 100 new cases per 100,000 people in two weeks, • “A substantial increase in hospitalizations directly related to COVID-19 over a 2-week period, • “Or the inability of TCHD to contact trace new cases within 24 hours of a known positive test result occurs.”

She said her agency “reserves the right to modify or rescind this variance approval as circumstances warrant.”

Ryan’s letter to commissioners concluded: “I appreciate your thoughtful

approach to these challenging issues, and wish you all the best inyour continuing efforts to ensure that residents are safe and healthy as we deal with this global pandemic. Douglas County is a valued partner ...”

“On behalf of our board I wish to express our thanks to all involved in the preparation and review of these documents including our business community, Tri-County Health Department, our hospitals and the CDPHE,” commission Chair Roger Partridge said in a statement to Colorado Community Media.

“We are especially grateful to the citizens of Douglas County for adhering to the behaviors that led to the favorable public health data that supported this outcome,” Partridge said.

In addition to the county variance request, leaders of Douglas County’s two largest municipalities had urged Polis to expedite the reopening of restricted businesses.

The town of Castle Rock sent a letter to Polis on May 19 urging the state to reopen restaurants and gyms.

Multiple councilmembers said during a town council meeting that day that businesses are struggling, and that they believe it’s possible to begin safely reopening the economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

And on May 18, Parker Mayor Mike Waid sent a letter to Polis, requesting an expedited process allowing all business to reopen.

Waid signed the letter on behalf of the Town of Parker and the town council, stating he believes it is “economically viable and operationally stable” to let all restaurants and gyms open with safety protocols in place.

On May 21, Parker Town Administrator Michelle Kivela issued an emergency order allowing restaurants and bars to temporarily expand their outdoor seating areas to serve more customers while adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Wrestling club grapples with virus restrictions Golden Eagles go online for training sessions during pandemic

Aiden Cartwright would rather be wrestling with a teammate at practice, but since all wrestling has been shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he’s turned toward other options.

Cartwright is a member of the Highlands Ranch-based Golden Eagles Wrestling Club. Head coach Scott McDoniel offers virtual training sessions for all the club members, and Cartwright is a participant.

“It’s been going great,” said Cartwright, who will be a junior at Mountain Vista. “It’s easy and I don’t have to go to practice. I like it a lot. And it’s good to stay in condition. It’s not the same but it’s better than nothing.

“Coach tries to have an aspect of competition. It’s there but it is not the same. It’s not like actually wrestling somebody. That’s what I miss the most, live drills. I miss wrestling with people.”

McDoniel knew any wrestling competition would be on hold to at least July 1, so he tweaked his classes with virtual sessions.

The Golden Eagles Wrestling Club was founded in 2014 to offer youth wrestling in Highlands Ranch for athletes between the ages of 5 years old through high school age. It is a feeder program for wrestlers who attend or will enroll at Mountain Vista, Highlands Ranch, ThunderRidge, Rock Canyon and Elizabeth high schools “It’s not going to replace actual sparring practices where you are drilling and wrestling with a teammate,” explained McDoniel. “I do believe from a technique perspective it’s not bad that we can take a step backwards and work on some basic fundamentals that

a lot of time kids take for granted.

“It was actually not that difficult to set up. We started using Zoom from the standpoint I could see a lot of people at one time. I just send out a link to our club members and they just join in and they just come online and I see them from there.”

McDoniel runs six different classes that focus on certain days of the week.

For instance, the classes are labeled as Mindset Monday, Technique Tuesday and Thursday and Workout Wednesday.

“You never know what is going to happen, and obviously with wrestling being a combative sport on the low

end of the totem pole of social distancing guidelines, there’s not much we can do with training right now,” said McDoniel. “We do a lot of what we call shadow drilling and using some visualization techniques and imagining your opponent in front of you as you are working specific techniques.

“The fundamental classes with the younger kids, we had as many as 20 come out at one time. With the advanced group we have 10 to 12.

From a visualization perspective there have been a couple benefits and we’ve seen kids actually getting better. The younger kids don’t have the distraction of the wrestling room where you have a lot of kids.”

Lance Alexander says he and his 12-year-old twin brother Emmett, who attend Coyote Creek Elementary School, know a lot more about wrestling thanks to McDoniel’s instructions.

“I am actually learning a lot,” said Lance Alexander. “Our coach supplies us with equipment and we also have my own mat. Our coach likes to mix it up but keep us on schedule. It’s been great. My brother enjoys it too and we’re family so it gives me a wrestling partner.”

Easton Parker, an 8-year-old club member, has enjoyed his class experience.

“It’s going good,” said Parker. “It’s really fun on the mat. I work hard. I’ve learned a lot about techniques.”

The variance requests that county churches be allowed to open with 50% capacity, Sager said. The health department is also hoping to allow attendees to remove face masks once sitting inside the building and away from other people, she said.

“We’re looking at these flexibilities so folks know we are exercising balance as well. We don’t want to be overburdensome,” Sager said. “If it’s impractical, people may not want to do it at all.”

St. Mark and other Catholic parishes in Douglas County are part of the Diocese of Colorado Springs, which announced May 13 that restricted Masses would be allowed. The Archdiocese of Denver made the same announcement May 6.

“This was a decision that has taken a lot of deliberation and study,” said Veronica Ambuul, a spokeswoman for the Diocese of Colorado Springs.

“It definitely was something that the bishop takes very seriously after consulting with a number of different people.”

The decision was made in part after a national Catholic organization released a detailed guideline about how parishes could safely reopen, Ambuul said. The procedures include things like emptying all shared holy water dispensers, restricting the numbers of people inside the buildings, removing reus-
