Seniors say goodbye in parade ‘It’s hard not having a proper graduation’

ithout the opportunity to hold a traditional graduation ceremony, seniors and staff from ThunderRidge High School gathered May 15 for a socially distanced goodbye parade.

Teachers lined up on a parking lot sidewalk at the Highlands Ranch school while wearing face masks and carrying decorated posters congratulating the Class of 2020. Meanwhile, seniors drove by in decorated vehicles, many sitting in truck beds or standing outside sunroofs as they waved to their teachers.

“We didn’t think it would end like this,” said Diann Schultz, a psychology teacher at the school. “It’s hard not having a proper graduation.”

Some students cheered and laughed and others shed tears as they drove past the faculty.

“This class was so awesome. They were a very close-knit class,” Schultz said. “I’m just really proud of them.”

Even though it wasn’t the ceremony they originally had in mind, teachers expressed their appreciation for the unusual event.

“Seniors missed out on so many rites of passage. It was important for us to see them physically,” English teacher Denise Orsini said. “This was as good for us as it was for them.”

With the original graduation canceled, the district is considering three alternate plans depending on how the COVID-19 pandemic progresses in Colorado.

Plan “A” is a June 24 graduation at EchoPark Stadium in Parker, and plan “B” would be in the same location July 22. The final option would be a virtual graduation if it is not possible to do a live event, according to the Douglas County district webpage.

“It’s important for them to know they’re loved and welcome back anytime,” Orsini said. “Because they’re a Grizzly.”

Collaboration key to recovery, new chamber president says South Metro’s Keener says industries must adapt to ‘new normal’

The chamber is also closely watching developments at the state government, where lawmakers say they will likely need to cut more than $3 billion from the state budget, including from roads and education.

“That matters a lot,” Keener said.

“An educated workforce is very important for a strong economy. That’s where a lot of our focus was before the pandemic. Every level from K-12 through college and technical school is vital to building the skills employers need.”

Still, there are glimmers of hope in the current landscape. Lockheed Martin announced plans to hire hundreds of new employees at its Littleton-area plants, and some businesses, in fields such as information technology, cleaning and manufacturing, are actually seeing business pick up, Keener said.

The chamber is a useful resource for businesses in a scary climate, Keener said.

“Yes, we’re entering a new normal,” Keener said. “But people got used to enhanced airport security after 9/11. We don’t think about it much now. If we keep collaborating and supporting one another, we’ll figure this out.”

Community association plans virtual magic show

Sterling Ranch residents, who were spread out and wearing masks, gathered in large fields outside their homes on May 14 to watch an air parade and fundraiser.

The Denver metro area event, a collaboration with Gov. Jared Polis and Mile High United Way, featured a group of local aviators and about 30 aircraft, according to a release about the event.

The flyover parade, described as an aerial salute honoring essential workers, aimed to raise money and awareness for the Help Colorado Now COVID-19 relief fund, as donations were made through the website. Lockheed Martin offered a $500,000 matching opportunity for funds raised from the event.

Sterling Ranch encouraged residents to step outside and

look up to enjoy the show as the parade went by at about 11:40 a.m.

Neighbors also headed to the Sterling Center, where refreshments and a food truck were available.

“It seemed like something interesting and it’s a nice day,” said Harold Smethills, president of the community’s board of directors. “What you try to do in a community is let the kids get out ... life is to be lived.”

The planes took off from Rocky Mountain Metro Airport in Broomfield and traveled south to Castle Rock then back over Aurora and finally to Boulder before landing at the airport.

“This collaborative effort among fellow airmen was born out of a desire to help the capable doctors, nurses and first responders who battle COVID-19 daily,” according to the release. “And also the essential workers including janitors, grocery store clerks, sanitation workers, delivery personnel and the other unsung heroes that selflessly work daily to ensure communities have access to essential services and goods.”

Jail protocol pushes back against COVID-19 Each new inmate is given a mask, screened; fewer being booked

Capt. Darren Weekly with the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office has had some sleepless nights since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

As the man charged with overseeing the Douglas County jail, he’s in charge of the health and safety of every inmate there. With social distancing being one of the biggest ways to prevent the spread of the potentially deadly virus, he and his team have been faced with a unusual challenge.

“We’re doing everything we can inside the facility that people outside the facility are doing,” Weekly said.

That means separating inmates so they each have their own cell, increasing cleaning measures, passing out masks and gloves and reminding inmates to distance themselves

They’ve also stopped allowing anyone other than staff to come to and from the building. Work-release programs are frozen, attorneys meet with clients over the phone and no visitors are allowed in person.

They’re able to spread out the inmates because of extra capacity in the jail, Weekly said. When the pandemic began, law enforcement and the jail worked together to keep the population low by no longer booking people into jail over low-level arrests for victimless crimes and small

misdemeanors.

“Every time we have a new intake, we run the risk of exposing our facility to the virus,” Weekly said.

That’s why each new inmate is given a mask, screened for COVID-19 symptoms and then spends 14 days in quarantine before joining the rest of the facility. Staff is also screened for symptoms at the beginning of their 10hour shifts.

“It is very stressful ... I worry about them constantly,” Weekly said of inmates and staff. “I want to make sure I do everything I can to keep them safe and keep

them healthy.”

Even with all these measures in place, the highly contagious virus has still made its way into the facility.

It started with one inmate who wasn’t feeling well and eventually, 10 inmates and four staff members tested positive. On April 28, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment determined the jail had an outbreak.

“I don’t know how it got in here,” Weekly said. “I wish I did.”

All who tested positive have since recovered and now, the jail is reporting zero cases.

“In large part, we avoided a major spread by quarantining, isolating, providing PPE and frequent cleaning,” Weekly said.

Some of these measures can be difficult on the mental health of the inmates, as many communal activities have been halted.

“Some are taking it better than others, it just varies,” Weekly said. “We try to be transparent about why we’re doing what we’re doing.”

While things are looking up for now, Weekly isn’t sure he will be able to maintain the zero-case status.

“I don’t know how much longer I can hold off as the courts open back up again,” he said. “We’ve already gotten close to not being able to do single cells for inmates.”

As of May 13, the jail had 72 unoccupied cells available for inmates. Weekly noted that number could easily fluctuate by 20 people on any given day.

“We are by no means out of the woods yet. I anticipate there will be another case,” he said. “Just because we don’t have any cases right now, you can’t let your guard down. Someone could unknowingly have it.”

School district providing huge number of free meals Demand for program exceeds expectations during COVID-19

When the Douglas County School District launched its free lunch and breakfast program amid the COVID-19 pandemic, staff did not know how much interest to expect from the community. Several weeks later, as the district is handing out meals by the tens of thousands on a weekly basis, demand for the program has exceeded all expectations.

The week of April 27, the district gave out more than 42,200 meals. On May 4, it handed out 8,800 that day alone. Compare that to the district’s summer meal program that kicks off at the end of the school year, which last year provided 44,000 meals the entire summer.

“And that was a record for us, and now to do 40,000 in one week, it’s just blowing our minds a bit,” said Jen Peifer, the manager of operations for the district’s Nutrition Services Department.

She believes a need for food support sparked by rising unemployment, shuttered school buildings and little to no child care will continue growing during the pandemic.

The program kicked off with three pickup sites in the county and has since expanded to 13, including locations in Parker, Highlands Ranch, Castle Rock, Larkspur and Sedalia.

“Every time we open a new site, we have not seen a decrease in our current sites,” Peifer said.

The week the program launched, March 23, the district passed out almost 9,500 meals. That nearly doubled the following week and near tripled in two weeks and continued climbing until it surpassed 42,000 in late April.

Locations are selected based on where the department believes there is a significant need. That was sometimes at the recommendation of principals and parents who said they were delivering food to numerous families in an area that did not have the means of traveling to a pickup location.

Within a week of the asks, DCSD’s Nutrition Services department got new locations up and running, Peifer said.

“In the Douglas County School District, our Nutrition Services team members have proven that they truly are heroes and wear aprons instead of capes,” Superintendent Thomas

Tucker said in a statement to Colorado Community Media. “We are here to support the nutritional needs of our students and will continue to do so through the summer months.”

The district’s free meal program during remote education will roll into the summer meal program, which operates similarly. Any child 18 or younger can receive a meal.

No proof of income or residency is required.

The risk of employees catching the virus was a concern of Peifer’s. To protect staff and to prevent a total shutdown of the program, they use three separate locations to package and prepare meals.

Splitting up meal production requires fewer employees on site, and means if one location must shut down because of a COVID-19 exposure, there are backup locations still running.

Masks are mandatory for each worker for the entirety of his or her shift.

The department instituted a health check on each employee. Staff take their temperature with a disposable thermometer before their shift begins and fill out a health log, detailing any symptoms, contacts or exposures to the virus.

“They’re really on the front lines of this,” Peifer said.

The program “has definitely not been without its challenges,” Peifer said, pointing to strains on the supply chain caused by the pandemic. The department struggled getting enough apples, milk and other foods.

“We all of a sudden had a lot more competition for the same product,” Peifer said.

Their production distributors took on grocery stores and saw increased demand during COVID-19. Food manufacturers such as meatpacking plants are accustomed to employing high numbers of people in close quarters, but that grew dangerous or impossible during the pandemic.

The types of food, brands and amount of food that Nutrition Services would typically order has also changed during COVID-19. Where the department would order 20 cases of peanut butter in a normal week, it might now order 400, Peifer said.

It is also leaning more on packaged foods that are less delicate and require less preparation than products like fresh produce.

DCSD is fortunate to have a warehouse and 10,000-square-foot freezer that provided options they did not have to rely on the supply chain for, Peifer said.

“We just really want to make sure that people know this program is going to keep going,” she said.

“Don’t let the bastards win,” read another.

Around the corner, Neville, RCastle Rock, found the Arellanos on the restaurant’s outdoor patio with a group of C&C supporters grilling up free food for anyone stopping by.

People trickled in and out of the cookout and the group approached 20 people at times. Some wore masks or face coverings, but many did not.

While the informal barbecue spanned the afternoon, the restaurant was officially closed that day,

accepting customers that day. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment suspended its business license indefinitely on May 12.

“While the residents and businesses of Colorado made tremendous sacrifices through physical distancing in order to flatten the curve, we are still not out of the woods. The virus will continue to take the lives of our families, neighbors and friends if we don’t act responsibly,” CDPHE Executive Director Jill Hunsaker Ryan said in a May 12 statement.

Ryan called C&C’s actions “irresponsible behavior” that could “defeat the progress made during the Stay-at-Home order.”

A Tri-County Health Department spokeswoman provided a statement saying the department was in conversations with CDPHE about “the most effective path forward.”

“We are prepared to move forward with further legal action tomorrow if the facility remains out of compliance,” the statement said. “Our goal is for the restaurant to stop violating the public health order and creating a risk of possible transmission of COVID-19.”

Neville arrived wearing a mask and removed it later when speaking with guests at the cafe. The state representative came to support C&C and said restaurants should be allowed to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic with certain guidelines, similar to how retailers like Walmart have been allowed to.

“I think originally we were trying to flatten the curve. I think we’ve done that,” Neville said.

When asked if reopening posed a threat to people’s physical health or furthering the virus’s spread, Neville said Colorado had curbed COVID-19 enough to warrant reopening businesses and had prevented overwhelming the state’s health care system.

Neville said that “it’s up to each individual business” when asked if opening in defiance of state and public health orders was the right or wrong move.

The Arellanos, who were interviewed earlier by Colorado Community Media, declined interview requests May 12. The couple’s at-

torney, Randy Corporon, said he and his clients are still exploring legal options but might initiate a lawsuit against Gov. Jared Polis claiming damages and violations of constitutional rights.

He did not know if the CDPHE or the Tri-County Health Department would also be named in any lawsuits.

Corporon doubts the business can reopen in Castle Rock once the pandemic subsides. He believed COVID-19 pushed C&C Coffee and Kitchen’s Castle Rock location to the brink of bankruptcy. Revoking the business license forced C&C’s Colorado Springs location to close as well.

Corporon believed both locations were paying off debts and in a viable financial position before the pandemic. The restaurant had received a $5,000 grant from a program the Town of Castle Rock is running during the pandemic, according to media reports. A GoFundMe for the restaurant — organized by a person identified as Steve Gilbertson of Larkspur — had raised nearly $30,000 as of early afternoon on May 15.

Neville said he does not believe C&C or businesses in similar financial positions had any choice in disobeying the shutdowns, and he could see it sparking a trend.

“I think you’re going to see more and more of that because their option is to file for bankruptcy right now,” Neville said.

Neville suggested using funds from the federal CARES Act to reimburse business owners for business personal property taxes. He called it “disturbing” that businesses are forced to close under a government mandate but still required to pay those taxes.

“At the very least, we shouldn’t be taxing them if we’re forcing them to close,” he said.

The longer Colorado takes to reopen, he said, the greater the state deficit will grow.

Neville condemned Tri-County for ordering C&C to close and the state’s revoking of C&C’s license. He believes Douglas County should sever ties with Tri-County, he said, echoing a call he and other Republican legislators made earlier in the pandemic.

“I think there’s a lot of issues with Tri-County. I think first off, any health department shouldn’t have the extreme authority to issue shutdowns like they did on the 25th without any sort of elected-official approval,” Neville said. “I see that there is a need for that for a brief amount of time, but we are now at almost two months and that’s probably too long.”

Neville said both health department orders and a governor’s executive orders should eventually be put to a vote of the Legislature — possibly 15 or 30 days after they are issued — to provide more checks and balances in the system.

“It should really be a vote of someone who is elected because they are accountable,” Neville said. “I’m elected. I’ll be accountable for taping a $20 there. I’m sure there’s people going to be angry at me for that, but I’ll be glad to stand up in front of the voters and explain my decision.”

Resilient and Ready are apt adjectives

arch, April, and May found us in the midst of remote learning in the Douglas County School District.

During this unprecedented time, our GUEST teachers, students COLUMN and parents adapted to this new way of life. It truly takes all of us working together for the betterment of our students.

We also faced a number of challenges. Our students missed their friends Thomas Tucker and teachers. Our teachers missed their students and school community. Some of our youngest learners, who are healthy

commencement ceremonies that balance celebrating our graduates, while keeping our students and community members safe. There are two words that come to mind when I think of our current situation — and how our students, staff, parents, and community have responded to this unprecedented time: Resilient and Ready.

Although everything looks a bit different this year, it is a time of celebration and reflection. All of our DCSD students have shown that they are Resilient and Ready. This is especially true for our Class of 2020. They worked for this moment for 13 years and deserve to be celebrated. I’ve been so impressed with the positivity and maturity many of our seniors are displaying in light of the cards they have been dealt related to this pandemic.

Living through this unusual time and

and well, struggled to understand why they couldn’t play with their friends.

Our children missed birthday parties and sports seasons. In-person ceremonies celebrating the transition from elementary school to middle school were canceled. Big life moments — like getting your learner’s permit to drive — were put on hold. Some of our high schoolers missed out on their prom.

These are milestone moments and it’s not easy to miss out on any of these. Our Class of 2020 has certainly been put to the test. Graduations were postponed and we await guidance from health experts, the Colorado Department of Education, and Gov. Jared Polis on whether in-person graduation ceremonies will be possible this summer. In the meantime, we continue to explore ways we can host

Now when I say that it is a powerful “little” book of big quotes, I really do mean “little.” It is only 27 pages long and contains wisdom and insights that are timeless.

The English language has taken quite a beating in recent years.

Scholars attribute it to many things.

For example: tweets, texts, emails and lazy-mindedness.

Further, correct English is not cool.

“Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?” is cool but “Who has the temerity to believe they can best the New Orleans Saints?” is not.

It’s necessary to point out that I am not an expert. John McWhorter is.

He could tell you why Nick Charles (“The Thin Man”) spoke of rounding up “sus-PECTS” in 1934 and why Captain Louie Renault (“Casablanca”) spoke of rounding up “SUS-pects” in 1942.

McWhorter teaches this stuff. He is an associate professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University. He knows etymology without looking it up. I’ve heard him do it.

Next to him, I am a yahoo. But I try, and I love language, even when it is corrupted now and then.

However, there are some words and phrases that drive me to distraction.

I am providing my own list of 10, to get the ball rolling.

1. Like. When used extragrammatically, it is the most noxious and pervasive word in the English language. Tracing its origin has been as difficult as tracing this little virus that has been going around. It is at least four decades old. Some think it started in the Valley. The San Fernando Valley.

It was once associated with young people. But those young people have aged and have taken it with them.

I am resigned to the likelihood it will never go away in my lifetime.

2. Back in the day. Back in whose day? For someone born in 2001, “back in the day” means something very different than it does for someone born in 1951. There are far better ways to say the same thing.

3. Old school. “Old school” is tired and wants to go to bed.

4. Arguably. “Arguably” is simply an

9. Sustainable. It sounds virtuous whenever it’s used, and it’s used too often.

10. Icon. Every actor, every musician, every athlete, every notable person in any field is now referred to as an “icon.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR If the quotations of the citizens cited in the May 14 paper are accurate, there are many misinformed and/or uninformed opinions concerning the COVID-19 pandemic.

For example, one citizen is quoted as saying, “I don’t think it (the pandemic) is as serious as they say.”

She apparently has more knowledge about virology and epidemiology than the thousands of scientists and engineers and physicians at the Johns Hopkins University and the Center for Disease Control to name just a few of the people apparently referred to as “they.” Or perhaps the citizen does not consider 4.5 million cases and 330,000 deaths as “serious.”

Another citizen is quoted as saying, “Car wrecks kill more people and what are we doing about those?”

(No comment needed about this clearly erroneous and irrelevant statement.) Another citizen is quoted as saying that maskless people who ignored CDPHE guidance and crowded into a Castle Rock restaurant on Mother’s Day were “support(ing) the Constitution and stand(ing) up for what is right.” I have a copy of the Constitution and I cannot find one sentence that suggests people have a “right” to be a health hazard.

Rather than risk spreading a deadly disease, I have a simple request that is certainly easy and endurable for anyone to accomplish: Please do the right thing and be kind and considerate to your fellow citizens and wear a mask when you leave your home, and avoid crowded places.

Swimming pools in limbo as summer season nears during pandemic

wimming-pool operators in the Denver metro area say they are waiting on guidelines from local and state health departments to determine if, when and how they should reopen this season — but if they do reopen, the pool experience will likely look and feel different under the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Town of Castle Rock said it is waiting on guidance from the Tri-County Health Department before deciding if and when its community pools should reopen. In a normal season, most area pools reopen near Memorial Day and run through Labor Day. The town operates two indoor pools at its recreation center, two outdoor pools, two outdoor splashpads and another indoor pool at the Miller Activity Complex aquatics center.

At the Miller Activity Complex splash pad alone, the town might see between 50,000 and 75,000 visits a year, aquatics supervisor Janice Weed said.

The town’s pools are typically at capacity for the duration of peak hours — between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. — each day during a normal season.

Weed said the uncertainty around such a central facet of summer life “adds another layer of anxiety for everyone.”

“It’s just another drop in the bucket of disappointment,” she said.

Still up in the air The Tri-County Health Department deferred to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment when asked how soon guidelines might come out.

A CDPHE spokesperson provided a statement from the Water Quality Control Division, saying the state will reassess phased openings of summer activities after June 1. As of now, all pools must remain closed under the state’s safer-at-home order.

“The governor will make these decisions on a rolling basis, based on the latest data and evidence,” the statement said.

“The department relies heavily on the CDC for guidance on swimming pool cleaning and disinfection and is developing guidelines that will be consistent with the CDC.” The department encouraged pool operators to familiarize themselves with CDC guidelines. The CDC suggested a slew of measures for to aquatic venues to employ if reopening — from promoting good behavior among users to maintaining clean and healthy facilities to preparing for when someone at a facility gets sick.

Brad Anderson is the aquatics supervisor for the City of Englewood, which operates an indoor pool at its recreation center plus the outdoor water park Pirates Cove.

The water park normally has a capacity of 1,800 people and typically sees 100,000 visitors in a year. As of now, Pirates Cove

is slated to reopen on June 7, but that is also contingent on receiving guidelines from the health department and could change.

In addition to the possible closure of community gathering spaces, Anderson said he worries residents will lose a favorite exercise option should pools stay closed.

Englewood offers a variety of learn-to-swim classes, which are lifesavers because drowning is a leading cause of death among children, he said, and also offers exercise programs at its pools.

Anderson called the possible loss of swimming activities a big hit for the community.

“We are always looking for some place to get away from the mundane, everyday life, the stress that we have,” he said.

“You can come to the swimming pool, a recreation center, you can exercise and relieve those stresses of everyday life and just get into a more relaxed atmosphere.”

Uncharted waters John Field is president of the Westminster-based MSI LLC, a homeowners association management company that oversees 470 communities across the Front Range, with approximately 90 pools among them.

None of the company’s clients have made an official decision about whether their community pools will reopen this season, Field said, and the decision falls to each individual

Most are waiting on the safer-at-home order to expire this month to decide, he said, but are preparing to reopen if possible.

“We predict that it will be controversial regardless of the board’s decision — there will almost certainly be friction in the community,” Field said.

“It’s not an easy time to be a decision maker.”

Field, Weed and Anderson all said that if pools do reopen, people should prepare for a new normal.

It is possible pools will not put out lounge furniture, to discourage people from congregating in groups. People will still be urged to stay six feet apart and wear a mask when not in the water.

Pools might reopen at a lower capacity, or if necessary, conduct recreation by appoint-

ment. Staff will likely monitor social distancing at the community pools, although most HOA private pools are swim-atyour-own-risk facilities without lifeguards, Field said.

Weed and Anderson said their communities will also increase the cleaning and sanitizing of the municipalities’ facilities. Field said increasing cleaning measures will depend on each HOA’s budget availability.

“Without a doubt, you’d want to assure or at least encourage everyone to practice all the different social distancing and cleaning standards that have been put forward,” he said.

Weed asked the community to be patient while pools wait for the green light to reopen and said pool operators are trying to do the same.

“We want to open up just like everyone else,” she said.

Douglas County Libraries offers curbside services Patrons can pick up holds at all branches; book drops reopen STAFF REPORT

While all Douglas County Libraries branches remain closed to walk-in traffic, patrons can now get their holds with the district’s Park and Pick-Up curbside service.

Park and Pick-Up is available from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m.

Sunday. At the Louviers branch, pick-up hours are 3-7 p.m. Tuesday.

To use Park and Pick-Up, look for the flag denoting parking spaces set aside for the service at each branch. If all marked spots are full, customers should wait in their car for a space to become available. Once parked in a numbered space, call or text the number on the sign with the required information.

Denver EcoFlora Project Funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services has allowed Denver Botanic Gardens to implement a local model of New York Botanic Gardens’ EcoFlora, which recruits citizen scientists for a three-year project to create a database of naturally occuring plant species and their ecological roles.

The database will include scientific names, physical descriptions, flowering and fruiting times and information about their ecosystems — plants, birds and animals associated with each species. Tough times can’t keep athlete down Lucas Campbell heads to college this fall on cheerleading scholarship

L

ucas Campbell, a baseball player who is finishing his senior year at Castle View High School in Castle Rock, admits to getting grief from his friends when he decided to become a cheerleader.

However, it has all worked out, as Campbell got scholarship offers from Alabama and the University of Central Florida, and in the fall he will be joining the national champion cheer team at UCF.

“I used to be a gymnast and then I had to stop gymnastics when I was a freshman in high school,” explained Campbell. “I was in a math class with some of the cheerleaders. I was talking to them and they told me I should come try cheer. I went to one of their practices and ended up liking it.

“When I first started cheerleading, everybody was making fun of me for doing it. The first year I did it, we won state, we got to go to nationals and did well there. I got to be around girls all the time, I got a national championship ring and got a college scholarship out of it.”

Campbell also keeps busy during the COVID-19 pandemic with his landscaping business and

Q&A with Campbell What is the hardest thing about missing your senior baseball season?

It’s frustrating and disappointing.

You’ve been training for it for so long and looking forward to the things you are going to do, you’ve gotten better with a new team and coaching staff and we were all looking forward to a new program.

What would have been your goals if you had played this season?

I would have wanted to help out and be a leader. I was the only one with varsity experience coming back.

How does missing the season affect your college plans, if at all?

I was pretty set with the cheerleading offer. Colleges really don’t recruit out of Colorado for baseball.

What is your favorite sports team?

The Los Angeles Angels. I grew up in California.

What are your responsibilities as a cheerleader?

Cheerleading is different because you have your football, basketball and volleyball games, and then you have your competitive season as well where you are

competing against other cheer teams.

You have a routine you do where you are throwing girls up in the air and doing all sort of flips. At the games our responsibilities are to throw the girls up in the air and you have certain stunt you have to do during the game.

During stay-at-home order, fewer Douglas County crashes

As people began to stay home in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reported traffic collisions went down by about 50% compared to last year, according to data from the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office.

That data was gathered before the sheriff ’s office switched in early April to “accident alert,” a system in which residents can file many of their collision reports online and deputies do not respond. Crash data from April was not yet available at the time of publishing.

“I absolutely love that part of this,” traffic Sgt. Brian Cogil said about the reduction.

These crashes include rear-end collisions, hit-and-runs, pedestrianinvolved crashes and anything else involving a motor vehicle, Cogil said.

It doesn’t include state highways or roads inside municipalities.

“It’s fantastic seeing the reduction in crashes,” he said. “That’s a trend we’ve always wanted to see.”

While traffic has increased since the county moved into the safer-at-home stage April 27, it hasn’t yet returned to normal, Cogil said.

Cogil and his deputies are still seeing increased speeds from the cars that are out, he said. That’s one trend he finds concerning.

“It’s easier to gain speed on the open roadways,” he said. “People need to really pay attention to their speedometer whether there’s traffic or nobody around ... if we catch you, you’re going to get a ticket.”

As the public health orders continue, aimed at reducing COVID-19 transmission, Cogil and his team are working to find ways to adapt and prepare for the ever-evolving situation.

“We’re trying to come up with ways that we can still do our job and do it effectively,” he said. “But also limit our contact.”

Douglas County students net Daniels Fund scholarships Three Douglas County School District seniors have been named recipients of the Daniels Fund Scholarship, which provides a four-year scholarship to any two- or four-year accredited college or university in the country.

The Daniels Fund Scholarship is given to students who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, and a commitment to serving their communities. The scholarship covers the cost

of tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and miscellaneous educational expenses not covered by other grants or scholarships.

The recipients are Aiden Ingenthron, of Castle View High School in Castle Rock; James O’Hare, of Legend High School in Parker; and Tatum Kay Reading, of Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch.
