Archaeologist talks prehistoric Douglas County Highlands Ranch Historical Society hosts event

Gordon Tucker has studied prehistoric sites across Israel, Japan and the western United States, including Douglas County.

On April 15, Tucker, an archaeologist, gave a presentation to members of the Highlands Ranch Historical Society at Southridge Recreation Center, 4800 McArthur Ranch Road. His slideshow — titled “Ancient Douglas County: Telling the Story of a Special Place and its People” — looked at life 12,000 years ago, eons before Douglas County was home to the 358,000 people it is today.

“We are telling a story about people,” Gordon said to the filled auditorium. “And we are using the remnants left behind to tell that story.”

But first, he explained to the audience his role as an archaeologist of 44 years.

“If you really pin them

down, (archaeologists) like to play in the dirt,” Gordon said, adding that he spends eight hours a day at a computer, examining artifacts.

Essentially Gordon’s job is to fit together pieces of a puzzle to understand human behavior, he said.

Douglas County has more than 1,200 archaeological sites, indicating the presence of prehistoric people and patterns in their behavior, Gordon explained.

Chipped and ground stone tools, petrified wood, basin homes and storage pits found

at a prehistoric site near Rueter-Hess Reservoir are clues to a residential base camp where Native Americans lived 7,0008,000 years ago, likely in the spring and early summer.

Ceramic pieces, sandals and basketry found in the Franktown Cave indicate a shelter for prehistoric people. A musket ball, threading beads, barbed wire and ceramic dishware found at Blackfoot Cave are linked to prehistoric people, modern tribes and Europeans.

“What we imagine people did was move around,” Gordon said.

The concept of life in Douglas County thousands of years ago astonished Teri Burget, a member of the Highlands Ranch Historical Society.

Previously she thought of Douglas County history as homesteaders settling in Highlands Ranch in the 19th century.

“It’s fascinating,” Burget said.

Gordon left the audience with one task. He pointed to a table with arrowheads, ceramic plates and a piece of stone.

“All of these are clues,” he said. “If you had this, what story would you tell?”

Residents are invited to a sneak peek of the first hospital in Highlands Ranch.

UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital, the colossal building on the southern edge of Central Park, is hosting an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 27.

Staff will give tours of the hospital and medical facilities, which include a birth center and cancer center.

Perks include refreshments and giveaways, along with a chance to meet Denver Broncos cheerleaders and the Rockies’ mascot, Dinger.

Dr. Tom Purcell, chief medical officer, said residents can expect a comprehensive community hospital that brings all health care closer to the patient.

He looks forward to helping mold the culture of the hospital.

“Come and see,” he asks of residents.

“We have more than 400 new employees that are very passionate about what they are doing.”

The hospital is in the midst of train-

ing staff and filling supply rooms, according to a spokeswoman.

“We expect to open to care for patients later this spring — that’s been the timeline for a while,” Paula Freund, public relations manager, said in an email.

UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital encompasses a 340,000-square-foot medical campus, with enough room for 87 inpatient beds, and an 85,000-squarefoot medical office. Community members will have access to a level III neonatal intensive care unit, an intensive care unit with 18 beds and six operating rooms, an emergency department, advanced cardiac services and more.

The $375 million project has generated 675 construction jobs and will provide 400 permanent jobs at completion, according to UCHealth. Job opportunities are listed at careers.uchealth.org.

Owned by Shea Properties, the bordering Central Park development is a hub of retail shops, restaurants and boutique workout studios. A few new additions are Deka Lash, an eyelash extension studio, and 47 Ronin Sushi & Spirits, a Japanese restaurant and bar.

Northeast of the hospital are singlefamily homes, a regional park slated to open this spring and a communications tower for the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office.

Woman who spurred school shutdowns found dead Sol Pais, 18, died by suicide in Mount Evans area, police say

A Florida woman whose behavior spurred a massive shutdown of Denver-area schools died by suicide near Mount Evans in Clear Creek County, officials said on April 17.

Sol Pais, 18, traveled from Florida to Colorado on April 15, FBI Special Agent Dean Phillips said in a news conference.

Phillips described Pais as obsessed with the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.

Authorities were not aware that Pais planned to target any specific school for an attack, but said they grew concerned based on a combination of actions, comments to acquaintances and online postings, and the timing with the 20th anniversary of the shooting drawing near, Phillips said.

Pais bought three one-way tickets to Denver, Phillips said, for April 15, 16 and 17, and took the first of the three flights.

Pais “immediately” went to a gun store upon arrival, Phillips said.

Though officials did not name the gun store, a Facebook post by Colorado Gun Broker on West Bowles Avenue in south Jefferson County said Pais purchased a shotgun there.

“We had no reason to suspect she was a threat to either herself or anyone else,” according to the post, which is attributed to store owner

Josh Rayburn.

The store is less than two miles from Columbine High School.

From there, Pais was dropped off in the Mount Evans area by a driver in a “for-rent vehicle,” Phillips said.

“We don’t know why that was the location of her choosing,” Phillips said.

The driver told agents she might

be in the area, Phillips said, but were waiting for daybreak to begin a search.

FBI agents and Clear Creek County Sheriff ’s deputies discovered Pais’s body in the Mount Evans area about 10:30 a.m. on April 17, Phillips said.

She appears to have died by a selfinflicted gunshot wound, he said.

Colorado authorities were first alerted to Pais’ actions by FBI agents in Miami on April 16, Phillips said.

People in Florida contacted local police after noticing Pais had disappeared, Phillips said. Local police in turn notified the FBI’s Miami field office, who notified Denver agents.

Denver FBI officials didn’t become aware of Pais until after she had procured the shotgun, Phillips said.

Pais’ presence kicked off a massive manhunt on April 16 and 17, prompting most of the Denver metro area’s school districts to cancel classes on April 17. Most schools were expected to resume classes as normal on April 18.

Phillips declined to comment on Pais’ mental health or social media activity. The investigation into Pais’s death is ongoing, Phillips said, and will examine whether she acted alone.

Asked by a reporter what he would say to parents who called the school shutdowns an overreaction, Phillips said, “As a parent, I would say thank you to the school system for protecting my child.”

Then there is the issue of nursing home costs, which can decimate an entire life’s savings.

People try to avoid this by putting property in their adult children’s names. But what if that son or daughter was in a car accident and sued? All that property you ‘safely’ secured in their names is now subject to satisfying a judgment.

The cardiac MRI is capable of visualizing small cardiac structures that other imaging modalities cannot. It also is helpful in identifying and diagnosing states of active inflammation or directly visualizing evidence of old heart attacks. The Cardiac MRI is changing the way cardiologists diagnose many different conditions.

The CMR is used for patients who are at risk for heart failure and has a growing impact on diagnosis, clinical management, and decision making. Bailey said the CMR’s ability to characterize the myocardium by using multiple different imaging parameters provides insight into the underlying heart failure and its prognosis. South Denver Cardiology has integrated this technology into diagnosis and management of complicated patients in their outpatient comprehensive heart

failure clinic.

Another test Bailey said South Denver Cardiology is proud to be utilizing is the MitraClip Procedure, also known as a transcatheter mitral valve repair. Bailey explained that a mitraclip is used to treat patients with heart failure that is caused specifically by a leaky heart valve.

Mitraclip is a medical device implanted via a transcatheter technique and involves “pinching” the leaky valve closed using a small clip.

Having a leaky heart valve can cause quality-of-life issues for anyone, including exhaustion and difficulty breathing. Bailey said prior to the mitraclip technology, someone with a leaky heart valve would have to go through open-heart surgery.

“With mitraclip, the entire procedure is guided by an ultra sound while the

patient is asleep,” Bailey said. “There is no open-heart surgery, and the recovery time is substantially less.”

Only performing the mitraclip procedures for a short time, Bailey said his team has performed about 2 dozen with reported results from patients being they are breathing better and have a lot more energy.

In 2019, Bailey said South Denver Cardiology will begin using a Cardiac CT Scan, which is technology that will provide doctors a scan of arteries and identify any blockages. A cardiac CT scan is a painless imaging test that uses x rays to take detailed pictures of the heart and its blood vessels.

“This is a five-minute test,” Bailey said.

“In the past, a patient would have to be admitted and we shoot dye into a catheter that would move through the heart. The Cardiac CT is a painless non-invasive way to get an accurate diagnosis of blockages and measure the percentage of blood flow in all arteries.”

Bailey said some other tests offered at South Denver Cardiology includes the transcatheter aortic-valve replacement, which is similar to what rock star Mick Jagger had done recently.

‘Not a single one of us walked out the same’ Survivors and loved ones gather to remember 13 killed in 1999 at Columbine

wenty years.

Twenty years since the day hell opened beneath Columbine High School. Since students streamed out of the south Jefferson County school, their hands over their heads, fleeing two classmates turned murderers.

Twenty years since families learned their loved ones had been taken. Since the community suffered a wound that may never completely heal.

On April 20, 20 years since the darkest day many will ever know, hundreds gathered in Clement Park, just around the corner from the school, to remember, and to share the pain and love that followed that day in 1999.

“Not all scars are visible on the skin,” Sean Graves, who was shot in the attack’s first moments, told the crowd. “On that day, there were 2,000 people inside… Not a single one of us walked out the same.”

But the mood in the park was not despair or misery, but hope and appreciation that after two decades, life has moved forward.

“We can overcome evil,” Graves said. “We can love one another. We can become family.”

Drawing from the strength of loved ones was crucial in the months and years following the attack, said Patrick Ireland, who to many was once known as “the boy in the window.” The world watched live in 1999 as two SWAT officers pulled Ireland, who had been shot multiple times, through a broken window of the school onto the roof of an armored vehicle.

“The amount of loving, healing energy was incredible,” Ireland said of the aftermath.

Throughout the memorial event, babies cooed in strollers, toddlers scribbled in coloring books and kids scampered among the crowd — new, young lives, for whom the tragedy at Columbine is something vague that happened long before their birth.

The pain may never fully subside, said Dawn Anna, whose daughter Lauren Townsend was killed in the attack.

“Sometimes I wonder how I’m going to get through this day,” Anna said. “Sometimes I wonder how I’m going to get through any day. But I think of Lauren, and I hear her say: ‘Do it for me. Do something wonderful for me today.’”

Toward the end of the ceremony, former Columbine Principal Frank DeAngelis read the names of those killed by the attackers. Thirteen names DeAngelis said he recites every morning upon waking. Thir-

RTD expects 4,400 daily riders at Southeast Extension stations Two-thirds of passengers will be using line for work, forecast says

About 6,000 people use the Lincoln Station on a given weekday, according to the Regional Transportation District. On May 19, the Southeast Rail Extension will open to the public.

The future development of Lone Tree’s RidgeGate area is dependent on the opening of the Southeast Rail Extension and, conversely, the bulk of ridership for the three new stations is reliant on the current and future employees in the area.

Once the Southeast Rail Extension opens to the public May 19, the Regional Transportation District anticipates about 4,400 riders, on an average weekday, will access one of the three new stations in south Lone Tree within the first year. By 2035, RTD anticipates a ridership of about 6,600. Those numbers are projections based on the planned buildout of the Lone Tree City Center and the surrounding villages and commercial districts.

About two-thirds of those riders will be using light rail for work, according to RTD, both to and from downtown Denver and the Tech Center. RTD officials said it would be more difficult to determine exactly how many people using the rail would be residents from Lone Tree, other parts of Douglas County, or elsewhere in the Denver

metro area.

RTD uses a regional travel model conducted by the Denver Regional Council of Governments to asses ridership in a given area.

“These forecasts are very dependent on the population for employment and household forecasts coming to fruition, which is hard to know,” said Lee Cryer, a project planning manager with RTD. “Several years ago, when we were making forecasts, it was thought there would already be some development of the Lone Tree City Center by the time the project opens, which there is not. Getting that ridership data is dependent on the land-use data coming to fruition.”

The regional travel model takes into consideration proximity to existing road and transit networks, such as I-25, I-70 and C-470, as well as population predictions from local jurisdictions regarding new households and employment. That includes places like Charles Schwab, the Kiewit regional headquarters and more than 12,000 housing units planned to come to RidgeGate East. Coventry Development expects the plans for RidgeGate East to bring 40,000 new jobs.

According to RTD, the city and local business associations in the southeast metro area contributed $25 million in cash and $3 million in right-of-way, permits and other in-kind contribu-

tions for the $233 million Southeast Rail Extension project. The contribution is 9.5 percent more than the 2.5 percent match RTD asks of its local partners. RTD invested $66 million and received a $92 million federal grant and a $9 million grant.

The new stations will allow passengers access to the R line through Aurora, the commuter train to Denver International Airport and to Union Station in downtown Denver.

The current end-of-line at Lincoln Station garners about 6,000 riders on an average weekday.

Sky Ridge Medical Center will have a stop on its doorstep, the Sky Ridge Station. Sky Ridge officials said it expects both employees and patients to use the stop for easier access to the hospital. Currently the hospital has about 40 employees who rely on light rail. The hospital pays for about 80 percent of a monthly pass for its employees. Sky Ridge officials expect the number of employees using light rail to grow once the Southeast Rail Extension opens.

“We are thrilled that light rail is opening, as this gives our employees and even our patients greater flexibility to reach the campus,” said Linda Watson, Sky Ridge’s spokesperson. “Our employees are environmentally conscious as well, so taking light rail is good for the air and provides them with a stress-free commute.”

Youth commission event looks at mental health STAFF REPORT

Guest speakers, a mental health resource fair and a Q&A session are highlights of an event planned by the City of Lone Tree Youth Commission to bring awareness of the impacts of mental health on youth.

It’s Not Nothing, sponsored by Sky Ridge Medical Center, will provide a raw look at how mental illness affects youth and explore how to bridge disconnects between youth and mental health resources, according to a news release.

The event is at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at the Lone Tree Arts Center.

“One in five teens struggles with mental illness, so when walking down the halls, I can’t help but wonder who’s hurting,” Noelle Harff, Lone Tree Youth Commission chair, said in a news release.

The event speakers include: Maria Bales, a mental health activist and mother of Nick Bales, a local teen who lost his life to suicide last year.

Denny Ying, an ultra-athlete who has been riding his bike around the world to raise awareness for mental health issues after fighting his own battles.

Alex Bush, a teen who lost her father to suicide.

Sarah Davidon, a psychologist from Mental Health Colorado.

“We’ve looked into many different aspects behind the importance of selfcare and looking out for others,” Ava Taylor, Lone Tree Youth Commission co-chair, said in the release. “Destigmatizing such a difficult topic to our age group is really important to us.”

DCSD employees will be paid for three snow days Goal is to show value of employees, ensure safety

Starting July 1, Douglas County School District will add classified employees to the list of staff that gets paid for up to three snow days or district closure days. The move is part of a continued effort to show all employees that they are valued, district leaders and school board members say.

“It’s important that we work on our board end statements in promoting positive culture and climate,” Amanda Thompson, the district’s chief human resources officer, said at an April 16

school board meeting, when the board unanimously approved the administrative recommendation.

Currently, only licensed employees, such as credentialed teachers, and administrators are compensated on snow days or district closure days.

Those who are not compensated, which are mostly classified employees, such as bus drivers and teacher aides, take different measures — some use a vacation day, others work from home.

Some even drive to work to ensure they are paid.

“Which is a safety issue,” DCSD Chief Financial Officer Scott Smith said. “It varies — department to department it’s not consistent.”

The decision to compensate all employees won’t cost the district more than it plans to spend in a year, Smith

said. That’s because the district budgets assuming it will be open every day.

The current cost of compensating administrators and professional technicians for three district closure days is $150,000, according to Smith. For licensed employees, it’s $1.3 million.

Classified staff would add $300,000.

Smith pointed out that a department that acts as its own enterprise, such as nutrition services, loses a day in revenue when the district closes. And if the district had to add days to the end of the school year, it would now pay more to compensate classified staff.

The district is allowed so many closed days under state standards.

That number varies from school to school based on bell schedules, Smith said. This year’s three snow days and

two late starts will not require any added days, according to Smith.

Staff members said they will consider all scenarios — the “what ifs” and cases when essential personnel have to work — and review in its employee guide the current language on district closure days.

In the situation that the district has to close for a fourth day, leadership will be proactive and plan ahead, Smith said. Staff and school board members agree that the focus is safety, along with consistency in policy across the district.

“If we cross day one and day two, that’s when that conversation starts as a leadership team with Dr. (Thomas) Tucker about what do we want to do in the event that this happens,” Smith said.

Arbor Day Arbor Day is the annual observance of the role trees have in our lives.

First observed in Nebraska in 1872, it is a day set aside to plant trees and shows a concern for future generations. The official Colorado state Arbor day is observed on the third Friday in April.

The metro district has a tree planting in Redstone Park, scheduled for April 23, with a group of students from Highlands Ranch High School.

Several oak, elm and crabapple trees are scheduled to be planted.

About me I was born and raised in Bergen County in New Jersey and graduated from Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks of New York state with a degree in forestry. In 1982 I moved to Colorado to continue my education at Colorado State University. I spent many years in Fort Collins working in the nursery/landscape industry until I was hired as a forestry technician with the metro district in 1992.

Joining the forestry industry As a young man I was driven to pursue a career working outside in some type of tree-related career. With my degree and experience in the nursery industry, a position with the newly developed community of Highlands

There’s a lot to be said for running out of coffee

The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is reach for some motivation: “You’re never fully

If I don’t get some coffee into my veins soon I will start to lose sight of what I am doing, repeat myself, and confuse my thinking. But it hasn’t happened yet.

And never say never is my motto.

The word “motto” is Latin for “to mumble, mutter, murmur,” and that’s what I am doing right now.

Teach yourself to speak the language of success

H LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Commissioners: Do your job Reasonable people can disagree about the merits and shortcomings, and yes, even the constitutionality of the recently passed Colorado House Bill 19-1177, the Extreme Risk Protection Orders measure, also know as the red flag bill. What is not up for debate, is that the duty of county elected officials and employees is to enforce the law, not undermine or ignore it. The Douglas County commissioners have adopted a resolution rebuking ERPO, questioning its constitutionality and its due process. This action is wholly inappropriate and is a slap in the face to the American system of govern-

Some opponents of the law warn of it being a “slippery slope” toward infringement on our rights under various amendments to the Constitution. That may well be, but is up to the judicial system to make that determination. ave you ever had a desire to learn to speak a foreign language? Some, if not many of you are already bilingual or multilingual, if that is you, you have my deepest respect as you can communicate with others in this WINNING world in a way WORDS that many of us simply cannot. Not without Google Translate or some other app.

Learning to speak Spanish, French, German, Italian, Hebrew, Chinese, JapaMichael Norton nese or any other foreign language is an asset to be valued for sure. But what about learning to speak and communicate in ways that lead us to the mutual success of ourselves and others? The value found in learning to speak words that lift others up instead of tearing them down is found in learning the language of success.

And for some, learning the language of success is as foreign as learning Arabic or Russian. Whether it is because this is the way we were talked to all of our lives or because

we try and use words to show our dominance or superiority, or for a host of many other reasons, it is never too late to learn a new and foreign language, the language of success.

While participating in a meeting with an executive who I had just met that day, I was caught off guard by his consistent use of profanity and in the way that he talked down to his team during the meeting. The executive had left the session a few minutes early and as I was packing up and saying my goodbyes, one of the team members apologized on behalf of her boss. She must have sensed that I had taken exception to the tone of the meeting and her boss’s apparent lack of self-awareness about what he said and how he said it. She offered, “That is just the way it is around here.”

Asking a few more questions I found out that morale was low, employee turnover was high, collaboration didn’t exist, and it was his way or the highway. Her next statement inspired this column, “Having him learn to speak to us differently would be like teaching him a foreign language.”

Voter-approved funds go to buildings, programs

ollowing the passage of the mill levy override (MLO) and bond initiatives, I committed to providing you with regular updates about how that money is being utilized. Here’s the latest on how voter-approved dollars are being invested into our schools.

Bond GUEST I’m excited to share that some of the bond COLUMN work has begun! In late January, DCSD sold $249,975,000 in general obligation bonds as approved by voters in November 2018. The proceeds from the bonds provide one-time funds for capital needs such Thomas Tucker as security upgrades, facility repairs, classroom furnishings, buses and technology.

Over spring break, new flooring was installed in areas inside Eagle Ridge Elementary, Chaparral High School and Ponderosa High School. Improvements to the heat exchangers at Shea Stadium have been completed. Work on mechanical controls (the systems that control HVAC, etc. at each school) has started at Sagewood Elementary and Ranch View Middle School.

This summer, roofing repairs, bleacher repairs and additional flooring work will take place. In addition, replacement rooftop units for heating and cooling will be completed for some of our charter schools and a new turf field at Legend High School will

be installed.

Mill levy override Voters also approved a $40 million mill levy override for operational needs such as salaries, staffing and student programming. These dollars are collected annually via property taxes.

Compensation As I shared in January, $17 million is being used for staff compensation and benefits (excluding superintendent and cabinet). While this begins to narrow pay gaps between us and our neighboring school districts, there is still work to be done.

In February, our HR team and DCSD Employee Council identified next steps for developing a new pay structure, including a salary study to compare DCSD’s salary structures to other school districts, and partnering with an outside consultant to help determine compensation needs in DCSD. Recommendations for a new pay structure will ultimately be shared with our Board of Education for a final decision.

We anticipate that the development of a new compensation structure will be a work in progress for most of the 2019-2020 school year.

Mental health resources We are ramping up efforts to recruit additional counselors for our elementary, middle and high schools. If you know someone who would make a great counselor, please spread the

So far this year, the number of measles cases in the John M. Douglas Jr. U.S. is the second highest since 2000.

Today, there are outbreaks of measles in Washington state, New York, California, New Jersey and Michigan, and New York City just declared a public health emergency because the outbreak there had become so severe.

Such outbreaks are a blunt reminder of how vulnerable we are in Colorado.

For the 2017-18 school year, Colorado’s kindergarten vaccination rate for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) ranked second to last in the U.S., with a coverage rate of 89 percent. Because measles is so highly contagious, we need 95 percent coverage to keep it under control and prevent an outbreak.

Vaccines are one of the greatest successes of our time — reducing illness, medical costs and emotional heartbreak for countless families. Vaccines have completely eradicated smallpox and are close to doing so for polio; they have also reduced disability and suffering from more than 18 diseases preventable by vaccines.

Yet, vaccines are victims of their own success. Keep in mind that because vaccines work so well to protect people, most of us haven’t seen the devastating consequences of diseases such as measles and mumps. In 2017 in Colorado, more than 9,000 children were taken to the hospital because they were ill from a disease that could have been prevented by vaccination.

Tri-County Health Department serves Adams, Arapahoe, and Douglas counties, and we are seeing measles, mumps and whooping cough re-emerge among unvaccinated people.

Decisions by parents not to vaccinate their children is a growing public health issue across the world. Such “vaccine hesitancy” is considered by the World Health Organization to be among the most important of all global health issues. It’s also an issue in our SEE DOUGLAS, P21

word! As a reminder, $3.5 million of the MLO is being used to add counselors at the elementary school level, and $2.5 million of the MLO is being used to reduce the middle and high school student-to-counselor ratio.

Career and technical education There will be $2 million of the MLO used to increase career- and tradefocused student programming, and to hire certified staff members for career and technical education courses.

DCSD is currently exploring ways to increase career and technical education opportunities for our students.

School-level funding More than $7 million will go toward school-level funding. These funds will be distributed depending on individual school needs. This includes increasing funding for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and adding funds for small schools.

Charter schools More than $8 million of the MLO was passed through to DCSD charter schools on an equal, per pupil basis.

Mill Bond Oversight Ad Hoc Committee DCSD recently formed a Mill Bond Oversight Ad Hoc Committee. This group of 20 individuals is monitoring the progress of the improvements and programs being implemented, ensuring expenditures are in alignment with ballot language approved by voters, and periodically reporting to the DCSD Board of Education. I sincerely appreciate this group’s service to our school district and community.

A GLIMPSE OF HISTORY Cinco De Mayo — or the fifth of May — is an annual celebration honoring the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Traditions in the state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, include military parades, recreations of the battle and other festive events. Cinco De Mayo is not a federal holiday, so for many Mexicans it’s just like any other day.

Cervezas. Tequila.

Across cities and college campuses in the United States, these tend to be the staples of Cinco de Mayo. Popular Mexican American restaurants and rooftop bars in the Denver metro area typically overflow on this party holiday.

This year Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, falls on a Sunday.

Aside from the fun it brings, the holiday is rich with history, a celebration of triumph and culture.

For Andrea Barela — who heads the largest two-day Cinco de Mayo celebration in the state, held May 4 and 5 this year — it’s a weekend for cultures to blend. In today’s political climate, she explains, that can otherwise be a challenge.

“With the turmoil and racism our country is experiencing, this is the weekend we forget all of that and come together as a community to celebrate,” said Barela, the president of NEWSED Community Development, which promotes economic success of underserved populations in the Denver metro area. “These are cultural events, they are significant and they should be maintained.”

History Cinco de Mayo — sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day — is celebrated by a population of residents in the Mexican state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City.

The day honors May 5, 1862, when the Mexican Army defeated European invaders at the Battle of Puebla. The triumph was unexpected — Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza led the outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexicans, according to the History Channel. Nonetheless they triumphed and maintained their land.

Cinco de Mayo traditions in Puebla include military parades, recreations of the battle and other festive events.

On May 4 and 5, Civic Center Park in downtown Denver turns into a mini Mexico for the annual Cinco de Mayo Festival. The two-day event celebrates the country’s culture and history.

But because it isn’t a federal holiday, Cinco de Mayo is just like any other day for many Mexicans.

“Puebla is actually the only place in Mexico that celebrates this day,” said Highlands Ranch resident Lola Wiarco Dweck, who is of Mexican heritage, adding, “and in the U.S., it’s a holiday that’s observed more by MexicanAmericans and Americans than Mexicans.”

Dweck was raised in California. Growing up, her family

didn’t celebrate the holiday but she did perform ballet folklórico at some Cinco de Mayo festivals in Los Angeles, she said.

Today Dweck, a professional chef, celebrates by making foods that commemorate the colors of the Mexican flag: red, white and green, and cooking mole poblano, one of Puebla’s best-known dishes.

In 1987, Denver’s first Cinco de Mayo festival took place in the La Alma-Lincoln Park neighborhood, off Santa Fe Drive. Until recently, nearly 90 percent of the neighborhood’s population was Hispanic, according to Barela, whose mother helped start the festival.

“It really started as a street event made to highlight the Santa Fe corridor and the west Denver neighborhood, to boost economic development,” Barela said. “It became very popular very quickly.”

It became so popular that it outgrew its original location and moved to Civic Center Park, near the Colorado Capitol in downtown Denver.

One of the largest in the nation, Denver’s Cinco de Mayo festival attracts about 400,000 people a year, depending on the weather.

The two-day extravaganza features three stages — one with bands from Mexico, one with local bands and one featuring dancers — more than 200 vendors, a parade, Chihuahua races, kids’ activities, folklórico dancers and a lowrider car show — what Barela calls a Chicano tradition.

“It’s so cultural,” Barela said of the festival, “that it’s like visiting Mexico in the city of Denver for a weekend.”

Natural materials form art at Chatfield Farms

culptor Patrick Dougherty creates immersive sculptures from natural materials — saplings and branches — and for his upcoming reveal at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield Farms, it’s likely the materials came SONYA’S from on-site. He SAMPLER weaves the materials into whimsical and complicated architectural forms and the works remain on exhibit until they deteriorate naturally. The process of forming a large piece takes three Sonya Ellingboe weeks, and this new structure will be unveiled to the public on April 27.

From guided wildflower hikes and horseback rides to sketching, nature walks and more, a number of programs are planned to help residents experience historic Sandstone Ranch, according to a news release from Douglas County.

The May 5 through Oct. 19 guided access schedule, published to the county’s website, acknowledges the public’s excitement about Sandstone Ranch and demonstrates the willingness by the county to open it up for guided access, the release said.

Each activity is limited to 20 participants and each participant must complete an online registration form. These activities are not designed for organized groups, and those under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult. Registration will open on the second Wednesday of every month for events offered in the following month.

“Public interest in this property exceeds that of any previously acquired open space locations in Douglas County,” Roger Partridge, chair of the Board of Douglas County

Commissioners, said in the release.

“We are very pleased to provide guided access to the property for many to enjoy in so many different ways, while the master plan process continues.”

With its spectacular views, expansive hay meadows, red rock formations, wildlife habitat, historic ranching operation, and 3.5 miles of common boundary with Pike National Forest, Sandstone Ranch is the crown jewel of all Douglas County’s Open Space properties, the release said.

This recently acquired 2,038-acre ranch borders Pike National Forest and features a diverse landscape, with red rock formations and sloping meadows; vast wildlife habitat and corridors, expansive and diverse vegetation and other natural resources; as well as cultural and historic assets, including a historic ranch operation and a number of historic buildings dating back to its original owners in the 1870s, the release said.

AirLife memorial run/walk supports EMS heroes Family-friendly celebration takes place May 11 at Hudson Gardens STAFF REPORT

As runners and walkers compete for winning times in the annual USATFsanctioned AirLife Memorial 5K/10K run/walk on May 11, one man will slow to a stop for a moment of reflection.

Dr. Mark Maertins has made this stop during each of the 21 prior AirLife Memorial events, according to a news release. Maertins pauses at the memorial site to honor his friends — former AirLife Denver pilot Pete Alplanlap and flight nurses Leslie Feldmann and Beth Barber — who were killed in 1997 when their helicopter struck electrical wires, the release said.

For 31 years, Maertins has served as medical director for AirLife Denver, a medical transport company that has completed more than 62,000 missions in the Rocky Mountain region, the release said. He always remembers the crew of that 1997 flight, which calls him to his true mission: educating flight crews and enhancing safety measures, the release said.

Dr. Mark Maertins, a Centennial physician who has served as the medical director for AirLife Denver for 31 years, has worked to ensure that EMS providers have the most advanced training and safety precautions.

Maertins has collaborated with the nonprofit to outfit flight crews with the most advanced equipment, including night vision goggles and lifesaving medical devices, and develop conferences and classes to educate EMS personnel throughout the region, the release said.

“When you’re doing a medical transport, the crew must function as a team. Therefore, it’s important that each member have the best training and tools available so that they can assist each other,” Maertins said in the release.

Founded as an event to honor fallen EMS heroes, the annual AirLife Memorial event has grown into a day-long celebration that brings together emergency responders and community members. In addition to the 5K and 10K run and walk, there is a free kids fun run; a muster of emergency response vehicles including fire trucks, ambulances and police cars, a helicopter demonstration; a kids’ fun zone with bouncy houses, giant slides and games; and a 16-team volleyball tournament.

The event kicks off at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 11 at Littleton’s Hudson Gardens, followed by the kids’ fun run at 9:30 a.m. and the start of the volleyball tournament at 10:30 a.m.

The interactive emergency response vehicle display, kids fun zone and expo will be open to the public all day.

Nonprofit set to host fundraiser for veterans Money will send disabled vets on vacation

In the summer of 2017, Army veteran Tyler Wilson, a paraplegic, traveled to Hawaii with his wife and baby son. Army veteran Josh Hargis, a double leg amputee, went to Ireland the summer of 2018. This October, Michael Jernigan, a retired marine who lost his sight, will go with his wife to Hawaii.

These are three of 32 disabled veterans who have been able to vacation, free of charge, thanks to Vacations for Warriors. Six years ago Bob DeMonbrun founded the nonprofit organization that funds two-week long trips to popular destinations like Hawaii, Yellowstone, the Caribbean and Disney World.

DeMonbrun, a veteran who served in the Vietnam era, sees his nonprofit as a way to honor families who face lifelong challenges. He wasn’t injured in the service but feels for those who were. Recipients of the vacations have debilitating mental and physical disabilities.

“I wanted to help soldiers and their families,” DeMonbrun, of Highlands Ranch, said. “We just want to bring some joy to their lives after years of rehab and injuries and family separation.”

At 6 p.m. May 11, Vacations for Warriors will host its fifth Luau Paniolo — a mix of a Hawaiian luau and cowboy style pig roast — at Elks Lodge 1650, 5749 S Curtice St., Littleton.

“There are so many other activities and retail stores, and our families are finding it a great place to be,” Bellestri said in the release.

“Moms and dads can do more and get more done while their students are at the center.”

Funds raised at Luau Paniolo will help send three veterans, including Jernigan, to a destination of their choice this year. Each trip costs about $10,000, according to DeMonbrun.

On vacation, the recipients and their families do activities — fishing, snorkeling, golfing. They take helicopter and boat tours. They stay in nice hotels and dine out.

For a moment in time they are distracted from the hardships they’ve endured.

“If we can show these guys some joy and their families some joy,” DeMonbrun said, “it really helps them.”

Sylvan moves to Lone Tree office, plans more sites in county STAFF REPORT

The center moved from its Highlands Ranch site in February, with a grand opening on March 9.

Sylvan Learning has been open in the Douglas County area for 25 years and plans to open a site in Parker this June.

From there, Sylvan plans to open two satellite locations, one in western Douglas County near the border of Highlands Ranch and Littleton, and a second in the Castle Rock-Castle Pines area. Both locations are expected to be up and running in the next two years, the release said.

Colorado Community Media wins big in contest

olorado Community Media received 50 awards in the annual state press competition, including the prestigious public service award for a year-long series on the state of mental health in Douglas County.

The award-winning entries, announced April 13, were spread among many of the 18 weeklies and two monthlies that CCM publishes in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson counties. They cover work done between Nov. 1, 2017 and Oct. 31, 2018.

“Being recognized by our peers is validation of the quality work of our staff,” Publisher Jerry Healey said.

“I am proud to be associated with the team here, and our readers can expect more good things to come.”

CCM’s papers won awards in all five of the Colorado Press Association’s weekly classifications, which were divided up based on size of circulation.

Class 1, for weeklies with a circulation of up to 1,000, was the smallest, and Class 5, for weeklies with a circulation greater than 7,000, was the largest.

Monthlies are in a separate class.

Among Class 4 weeklies, journalists Alex DeWind, Jessica Gibbs and Nick Puckett took top honors in public service and series for their “Time to Talk” project, which explored all facets of mental health in Douglas

Arts center welcomes new chief Sharan Wilson has been Colorado resident for 35 years

Sharan Wilson started in her new job as executive director of Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center on April 8 after the THAC board of directors found her to be bestqualified for the multi-faceted position of the many people who applied.

Her career experience is with nonprofits and their operation and she is excited that contracts for Town Hall’s next season are Wilson mostly signed and ready for announcement soon. Watch for what comes next!

Wilson has been in Colorado since 1984 and grew up in neighboring Nebraska, where she attended junior college. With an Air Force husband, the family moved frequently in the early years,

but ended up in Omaha. Her master’s degree in journalism (emphasis on PR) is from University of Nebraska/ Omaha. A job with the Omaha World-Herald was focused mainly on advertising, she said.

“I raised my family here (Littleton area),” she said, where her three children attended local schools.

Wilson worked in cable television for a time in the late 1970s, with the celebrated Bill Daniels, involving cable companies across the U.S. Another nonprofit organization Wilson worked with trained and supplied service dogs for veterans.

Additional experience was in other fields, including one that worked with erosion problems. Variety of ways of accomplishing things ...

She is now meeting with each Town Hall board member individually (one a week), “raising community knowledge,” and getting familiar with Town Hall’s operations, and says she is looking forward to meeting Main Street business owners and operators.

She is active in her church, South Suburban Christian,

reads a lot and loves to travel to new places, she said.

As she settles into Town Hall’s routines and projects, she will be occupied with “policies, procedures, job descriptions” and more as new season announcements happen and box office activity picks up. A PR/development director is needed and preparations for the May opening of “Sister Act” are in process, as well as installation of another art exhibit in May and another for summer/Western Welcome Week ... August brings WWW and in mid-September, the popular Scavenger Hunt, presented

by Historic Littleton Inc. will bring in a crowd — and the new theater season will get underway.

The THAC board is discussing new ideas that will flow through Wilson’s Main Street office as well. She will become accustomed to a fairly constant flow of visitors when the lobby doors are open and in summer, lots of young people participate in the popular Actor’s Playground education programs.

We wish her many happy experiences in that treasured building!

Roof repair: Think ahead as hail season nears STAFF REPORT

Spring and hailstorm damage go hand in hand, making it high season for contractor complaints, according to a consumer advisory released by the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Given the numerous complaints law enforcement receives this time of year, the advisory urges homeowners to consider steps to take for repairing a roof or property in the event of hail or storm damage.

According to the release, the greatest number of complaints are filed against door-to-door contractors, especially those who come knocking right after a hailstorm.

The most common type of complaint is contractor nonperformance — the homeowner gives money upfront to a contractor, who then disappears — closely followed by

poor quality of work grievances, the release says.

If the loss to the consumer exceeds the $7,500 amount for small claims court, the consumer might have to hire an attorney to file a lawsuit, the release says. And while consumers might win their judgment, it’s not always likely that they can collect.

While door-to-door contractors are not necessarily scam artists, doing business with one out of convenience is risky, the release says. The DA’s office advisory urges homeowners to do their due diligence: • Research all prospective contractors. Ask your insurance company for recommendations. Review the business on the Better Business Bureau website (www.bbb.org). Things to look at include the length of time the company has been in business and the number of complaints the business has received. How the

business handles complaints also is revealing.

• Check with the building department in your city or county to see if the contractor is licensed.

• Get at least three bids. Many companies will not request any payment before work is completed. A roofing contractor is prohibited by law from waiving your obligation to pay your insurance deductible.

• Understand the contract before signing. The contract should have a start and an end date, and a clause that indicates how disputes will be handled. Understand your obligation if the insurance company does not pay for something. Once the work commenses, get all change orders in writing.

• Get a signed lien waiver from the contractor when you make your payment to ensure that all subcontractors and suppliers have been paid

to avoid a lien being slapped on your home. Under the Colorado Mechanics Lien Law, subcontractors and suppliers have the right to place a lien on an owner’s property if they are not paid by the contractor for the work they performed on the home, according to the release.

• Understand your rights under the Residential Roofing Services statute.

A roofing contractor must disclose their surety and liability coverage insurer, and provide the homeowner with written notification that the roofing contractor shall hold any payment form the residential property owner in trust until the roofing contractor has delivered roofing materials or has performed a majority of the roofing work on the residential property.

jurisdiction: Among 1,135 child care centers, kindergartens and schools, parents of nearly 8,000 students opted out of having their child receive a recommended vaccine by using a personal belief or religious exemption.

In our three counties, vaccination rates for MMR in kindergarteners in some schools run as low as 43%, and MMR rates are lower than the state average in one out of four kindergartens.

Much of this hesitancy is based upon an increasing amount of misinformation about safe vaccines actually are.

Such misunderstanding can lead to concern among some parents who are trying to do the best they can for their child’s health and thus are cautious about health decisions. That’s understandable. But the truth is that vaccines are safe. Some of the best minds in science continuously study vaccines to ensure they are safe and effective — for the community, and for their own children. Myths about vaccine risks — such

as the unfortunate fraudulent report that vaccines can cause autism — have been regularly assessed and debunked.

Now, the process for a parent to claim a non-medical exemption so their child can enter school without meeting vaccination requirements is easier than vaccinating a child. House Bill 1312, currently under consideration by the Colorado legislature, asks parents considering a non-medical exemption to put in time and consideration — just as the overwhelming majority of parents who do vaccinate their children take the time to do. This is important because vaccination is not only a personal choice. Whether or not a parent vaccinates their own child has very real impacts on people around them in the larger community.

Diseases quickly become outbreaks when we don’t work together. Take away vaccination and disease will return. As a part of this community, we have a responsibility to each other.

Please talk to your health-care provider and get the facts about vaccination.

Monica Fuglei, in her fifth year as a fulltime faculty member, was selected for the award by student Ellie Mayer, who is Fuglei a concurrent enrollment student at ACC. Fuglei also is active with ACC’s Inclusive Excel-

lence Council.

Fuglei will receive a plaque, a personalized tribute from Mayer and a $500 grant to be used for a project or activity to benefit students at ACC. Fuglei also is active with ACC’s Inclusive Excellence Council.

Especially now, the current struggles with suicide and things like that, I think a lot of people maybe think, ‘OK they’re labeled like this, I can’t hang out with this type of person.’ I would just like to help pour into other people and let them know that labels don’t matter, it’s the person underneath.

One thing I’ve been doing is just bringing other people to the things I have been doing. We meet every Saturday at my school and do the Special Olympics thing. I’ve just tried to bring in random people or friends of mine in to help spread positivity of meeting different people and beginning to appreciate all different types of people.

Gavin Johns, 15, is a sophomore at Valor Christian High School who has a love for seeing others smile. The son of two entrepreneurs, Johns hopes to one day follow in his parents’ footsteps, and do as much as he can to bring those smiles every day.

On April 16, the Lone Tree Youth Commission honored Johns with the Outstanding Youth of Lone Tree award. The award is given to youth in the city who have a proven commitment to giving back in the community.

When he’s not going to school or volunteering with the Special Olympics, Johns spends time with his friends. He has a love for cars as well, and hopes to one day own his own mid-2000s BMW M3 — that is, once he finally earns his driver’s license.

“I’d like to instill a sense of caring for other people,” Johns said, “no matter who they are, what they look like.”

Colorado Community Media spoke to Johns about his award and his passion for giving back.

It feels really good. I worked hard to get this, and it’s been a goal of mine to pour back into the community. One of the things that’s been reassuring is that the work I’m doing is paying off, and a lot of things like the leadership positions I’ve taken have proven to be beneficial.

Sky Ridge surgical teams recognized for excellence STAFF REPORT

Sky Ridge Medical Center has earned two 2018 Unit of Distinction Awards in an annual program that recognizes and rewards exemplary nursing units at HCA Healthcare facilities, according to a news release.

HCA is the parent company of HealthONE Sky Ridge Medical Center.

The Sky Ridge main operating room and the Spine & Total Joint Center operating room teams earned first- and secondplace honors, respectively, among 185 hospitals across the country, the release said.

The Unit of Distinction designation is achieved through measurable, exemplary performance in the strategic areas of advocacy and leadership, consistency in nursing practice and operations, and leveraging scale to drive performance.

During 2018, approximately 1,200 HCA Healthcare nursing

units participated in the program. Using specific criteria, nursing units are evaluated and scored based on performance.

Recipients of the 2018 Unit of Distinction honor are considered to be in the top 5 percent of all HCA Healthcare medicalsurgical, critical care, emergency services and surgical services nursing units.

“The Unit of Distinction Award recognizes and celebrates excellence in nursing and acknowledges that it takes a high-performing team demonstrating a high level of commitment to achieve results like these,” Susan Hicks, CEO of Sky Ridge Medical Center, said in the release. “We thank our teams and our medical staff for providing this extraordinary level of care to our community.”

Sky Ridge Medical Center, the first hospital to open in Douglas County in 2003, is a member of the HealthONE network.

ighlands Ranch senior Shaylah Devlin took a class in forensic science, which piqued her interest in solving crimes.

Devlin, who plays girls lacrosse for the Rock Canyon co-op team, has had no problem in solving defenses.

She leads the team in goals and is one of the goal scoring leaders in the Continental League.

“I am going to play Division I lacrosse at American University in Washington, D.C.,” said Devlin, who played lacrosse for ThunderRidge as a freshman, plus was on the Highlands Ranch field hockey and poms teams. “I haven’t decided what I want to do after that — either get an internship in the White House or an internship in medical because I’ve always wanted to go into medical stuff, or because of my forensic class I am thinking about going into the FBI and crime-scene stuff.

“Goal scoring all comes from my teammates, without them I couldn’t score. You’ve just got to chase it in, have no fear and take the shot. It’s all about opportunity and if you have the opportunity, it’s open and people set you up and you to go in and score. I’m having a pretty good year. It’s fun.”

Q&A with Devlin Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Tom Brady. He’s a great athlete and I look up to him. He continues to win and beat the odds.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

A perfect lacrosse game would be obviously ending with a win and usually at least three goals, more assists and draw control.

Do you have any pre-competition rituals or superstitions?

I have a ritual with my cleats.

They are kind of like sock cleats and I don’t tie them on. It is kind of a superstition. I stared a new ritual of drinking a Body Armour energy drink before every game.

Is winning ground balls or face-offs more important in girls lacrosse?

They are both equally important because if the ball is on the ground we want to pick it up and if the ball is up in the air on a face-off we want to get that to get possession and have the opportunity to score.

Girls lacrosse has been labeled a noncontact sport, but is it?

It’s not full contact like boys but we can make contact. Girls get aggressive so we do have contact out there. The refs either let it happen or they don’t.

What would you change if you could about girls lacrosse?

I would make it more contact. It makes it more fun. It just makes the game more competitive.

ebastian Anderson is 16 years old and missing out on some of the fun activities that other high school students are doing since he opted to join the adult world.

But he is living a dream.

Anderson on April 3 became the youngest player in club history to sign a contract with the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer and now needs to follow the commitments that go OVERTIME along with being a professional athlete.

“It is definitely the life I chose,” said Anderson, a junior at ThunderRidge High School.

“I have three periods at ThunderJim Benton Ridge and then I have three classes online,” he added.

“It’s kind of tough sometimes but we sat down with the teachers and they knew I was going to leave a little bit early sometimes and show up late sometimes. They have been super helpful.

“I come in on the off day on Wednesday and stay in school as much as I can and make up as much time as I can with the teachers. The grades aren’t as good as if I was in school full time but everyone is helpful. A lot of people talk to me about it (the contract) at school. I just say thank you.”

Anderson, a defender who played for Real Colorado before switching to the Rapids’ Development Academy two years ago, agreed to a Homegrown contract. It is a fiveyear contract with an option for 2024. He is the 11th player to sign a Homegrown contract with the Rapids.

The Homegrown Player Rule allows MLS soccer teams to sign local players from their own development academies directly to MLS first team rosters. According to Top Drawer Soccer, the MLS pays out around $9 million in lump Homegrown salaries per year, and at last count there were 126 players in the league that have Homegrown pacts.

“Obviously I was beyond excited to sign the contract and make it official,” said Anderson. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid. I went to the Rapids with the thought in mind to become a professional soccer player to sign a professional contract and move on to that second part of my life. That’s what I did.”

ccording to a study recently released by Fannie Mae, more baby boomer retirees have mortgage debt than those retirees who were born between 1931 and 1935.

“Given that income typically declines in retirement, monthly mortgage payments could stretch the household budgets of boomers who exit the labor force without first extinguishing their housing debts.”

Many of those boomer retirees turn to a reverse mortgage to eliminate their mortgage payments as they enter retirement. While property taxes and homeowners insurance must continue to be paid, the removal of an oftensubstantial mortgage payment allows homeowners to ease the pressure of stretched financial obligations.

With less outgo comes a sigh of relief, as retirees may be able to delay taking social security until age 70, pay off high interest credit card debt, allow time for the retirement portfolio to grow, and find a myriad of other

uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

Recent changes to the government insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (Reverse Mortgage) program

by HUD have reduced the amount of mortgage insurance paid annually from 1.25% to .5%.

Another group of seniors that are benefiting from a reverse mortgage are those who own their homes free-andclear. The equity, or housing wealth, available to such homeowners is often substantial, and access to a portion of those funds can be life changing!

More and more financial planners are encouraging their clients to look into a reverse mortgage. For some it is a matter of being house-rich and cash-poor. The proceeds may be taken as a lump sum, a line of credit that is guaranteed to grow at about 5% a year compounding annually, or a monthly income stream. Shari Culver, Arapahoe Community College Career and Transfer Center director, received a Phi Theta Kappa Paragon Award for New Advisors.

Culver was one of 15 recipients from more than 1,200 international chapters of Phi Theta Kappa to earn the annual distinction. The award was presented during the PTK Catalyst international convention April Culver 4-6 in Orlando. “A year ago I saw all these guys, especially Cole Bassett, started training with the first team, and he was doing so well and moved up to the first team full time,” said Anderson. “Cole and I are good buddies and I thought I’m not too far off from that, and if I work hard I will get the opportunity, and sure enough it came.”

Now Anderson is working to get into his first MLS contest after being a substitute for two matches.

“That’s obviously the next goal for me with the Rapids right now,” said Anderson. “I made the A team the last two trips and was eligible to play and that was a big step for me. For me it’s focusing on training and proving to the coach that I am ready to play.”

Snowboarders sometimes refer to freeriding as backcountry, sidecountry, big mountain or extreme riding.

Lucas Lemire, a 14-year-old student at Castle Rock Middle School, is a competitive big mountain snowboarder on Team Summit Colorado.

He recently placed third in the 12-14 age group at the IFSA Big Mountain North American Championships, held at Kicking Horse in British Columbia on Aril 12.

According to the Summit Daily E-Edition, Lemire executed a few nice turns before hitting a four-foot drop into another chute. He then carved and connected fluid turns before hitting another drop near the judges and came to a stop with a textbook turn.

Lemire told the newspaper that he is “trying to set a goal for myself to get at least one podium next year.”
