I’ve been in Highlands Ranch for 15 years. I have a wife and 2-year-old daughter.

I went to Mullen High School and studied journalism at the University of Northern Colorado Greeley. I took my first job at the Fort Morgan Times as a business editor. I covered everything. It was a job that heavily relied on local news. I wanted to be at a bigger paper so I went to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle in Cheyenne and worked as a cops and courts reporter.

After two years I got tired. I decided to come to Denver and I’ve since been with the company I’m at today, United Car Care. We administer claims for vehicles when they break down.

Running I got into running around 2010.

I dabbled in it here and there and never took it seriously. My mom had signed us up for a 5k and it took off from there. Running makes me a better person inside and out. It keeps me healthy and brings out the best in me.

I went through some personal stuff when I came across Runners Roost.

It’s a group of about 200 runners all over Denver. They were taking applications to be part of their team.

I had never done running groups before, but I always liked running on my own, so I thought maybe it would help me break out of that.

I joined the team January 2017.

They’re the reason why I’ve elevated my running. They broke me out of my shell.

This is the place for people facing dementia.

This is where we begin.

The qualifying times are very tight so I thought maybe I could go the charity route. I had friends who had done the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge, which raises money for cancer research. We all know someone who has been affected by cancer and I can’t think of a better reason to raise money.

Removing tree limbs, shrubs and brush from your property is essential for wildfire risk reduction. To help residents with wildfire preparedness, Douglas County offers two sites to dispose of unwanted slash, according to a news release from the county.

Douglas County’s slash-mulch site at 1400 Caprice Drive in Castle Rock opens April 6 and will remain open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 26. The site also gives residents the opportunity to go home with fresh mulch.

Douglas County’s slash-mulch site at 7828 S. Colo. 67 (2.5 miles north of Deckers) is open year-round, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays.

Acceptable items at both sites include tree limbs, shrubs and brush with a maximum length of 6 feet and maximum diameter of 12 inches.

Loose pine needles are accepted but must be keep separate from other items. All loads must be covered upon arrival to the slash mulch site.

Items that will not be accepted at either site include appliances, dirt, grass, household trash, lumber, railroad ties, roots, stumps and weeds.

During open season, a county-operated loader will be available to load free wood chips for homeowners to use as mulch. Material can be picked up anytime during the season the site is open to accept slash.

Douglas County named nation’s healthiest U.S. News & World Report reveals 2019 rankings

Douglas County is the healthiest community in America.

That’s according to rankings from U.S. News & World Report and the Aetna Foundation, which announced the 2019 Healthiest Communities on March 26. Landing in the No. 1 spot is Douglas County, which ranked No. 2 last year and has frequently ranked first or second on similar reports.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings evaluated nearly 3,000 communities throughout the nation, factoring in things like education, mental and physical health, and infrastructure.

Communities were scored based on 81 metrics within 10 categories.

Seven communities in Colorado ranked among the top 20, with Broomfield County ranked fifth in the nation. Los Alamos County, New Mexico, was ranked No. 2 in the nation, and Falls Church, Virginia — last year’s No. 1— was ranked third.

Colorado had the highest average score in the report’s environment category, which measured natural amenities, air and water quality.

Thomas said she often questions if the lack of marijuana dispensaries in Douglas County helps it maintain its healthy status. The consumption of marijuana is legal in the county, as it is statewide, but its sale is banned at the local level.

U.S. News’ announcement comes off the heels of other signs Douglas County stands apart in terms of health.

In March, Douglas County was named the healthiest in Colorado by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a national, health-based philanthropy based in New Jersey.

Sheriff stands by support of ‘red flag’ bill Measure passes state Senate by narrowest of margins

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock reaffirmed his support for a contentious red-flag bill after the measure narrowly passed the state Senate, putting Colorado on the cusp of becoming the 15th state in the nation to adopt such a law.

“I believe at the core that this will save lives,” Spurlock said.

“I’m happy it passed.

We can now move forward and hopefully we can work together.”

The Senate on March 28 passed House Bill Spurlock 19-1177, the Extreme Risk Protection Orders measure, in an 18-17 vote. The bill now heads back to the House so amendments can be considered.

It first passed the House in a 35-25 vote.

Legislators’ opinions of the measure have mostly been along party lines, with Democrats generally being in favor and Republicans typically opposed.

But Spurlock, a Republican, has found himself at odds on this issue with many of Douglas County’s GOP leaders.

Each of Douglas County’s state senators and representatives — all Republicans — voted against the bill. County commissioners, also all Republicans, have opposed the measure, adopting a resolution rebuking ERPO, questioning its constitutionality and its due process. Numerous counties in the state have adopted “Second Amendment Sanctuary” positions, though Douglas County stopped short of making that proclamation.

“We are disappointed that the Red Flag bill passed the Senate this afternoon without a strategy for addressing the mental health concerns raised by so many, or the constitutional questions raised by numerous counties, including Douglas County, throughout the state,” Chairwoman Lora Thomas said in a joint statement from the board.

Senate sponsors Lois Court, D-Denver, and Brittany Pettersen, DLakewood called the bill a commonsense approach to gun safety and a good move for increasing public safety. They released statements following the vote.

“Thoughts and prayers don’t save lives, but extreme risk protection orders will, and I look forward to seeing it signed into law,” Court said.

Pettersen argued most people in Colorado support the bill.

“We passed this bill and did what is right for our law enforcement, domestic violence survivors, our kids who just want to feel safe when they go to school, and the countless family members who have lost someone to unnecessary gun violence,” she said.

The Extreme Risk Protection Orders bill, or ERPO, would allow law enforcement, family or household members to petition a judge to remove guns from someone they believe is a significant risk to themselves or others. The initial protection order could be granted at a hearing without the owner present and last up to 14 days. At a later hearing, the judge could order removal of their guns for up to 364 days.

The bill is named for fallen Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office Deputy Zackari Parrish, who died on Dec. 31, 2017 when a reportedly mentallyill gunman shot him and six other people. Parrish was among five officers attempting to place the suspect, Matthew Riehl, on a mental health hold when the shooting began.

Although it’s not the only incident to spur his support, Spurlock said Parrish’s death is a significant reason he believes in red-flag laws.

If one had been in place prior to the New Year’s Eve shooting, law enforcement or Riehl’s family may

have been able to intervene and possibly prevent the shooting, Spurlock said.

Spurlock said he’s confident the bill will be signed into law if it arrives on Gov. Jared Polis’ desk, but that the work would only begin there. The judicial branch would then begin to form policy around carrying out the law.

Spurlock has received both praise and backlash for his support of the bill.

The sheriff, after leaving a March 28 meeting with commissioners for matters unrelated to the bill, said he and the board have differing opinions on H.B. 19-1177 but were still working together well.

A group has vowed to pursue a recall of Spurlock for his support of the bill.

A spokesman for the recall committee, attorney Robert Wareham, said he was disappointed in the Senate’s March 28 vote. He believes the law is likely to be abused, used as a revenge tool or other method of taking someone’s guns without sufficient cause or enough evidence they are a significant risk.

“I know that many people in Douglas County pleaded with the sheriff in the last 24 hours to withdraw his support of the bill,” Wareham said.

Fight for change in DCSD policy on medical marijuana continues Administration stands by decision, citing federal law

Three years ago, Sarah Porter moved her family from Maryland to Douglas County. Colorado had something her family desperately needed: medical cannabis to treat her 13-year-old daughter’s debilitating Crohn’s disease. Even better, Douglas County School District allowed Porter to administer her daughter’s medication at school, the result of a policy approved in 2016.

“She has been healthier and better than she has ever been,” Porter said.

Aligned with a state law passed in 2017, the current policy allows parents or primary caregivers to administer medical marijuana products, hemp oils and other cannabinoid products to qualified students on district property.

In 2018, the state Legislature passed House Bill 18-1286, permitting school districts to authorize school personnel to administer medical marijuana on school grounds, buses and at schoolsponsored events.

Which means someone like Porter would no longer have to make a trip to school one or more times a day to give his or her child cannabis. In an emergency situation, an authorized person in the building would be able to assist.

But Douglas County School District’s administration team opted to keep its current policy — which allows only parents and legal guardians to administer medical cannabis — which Porter says puts a strain on her schedule and potentially compromises her daughter’s health.

Stepping away from work every day to go to Castle Rock Middle School is a challenge, Porter said. And although she’d like to make more money, she has to stay close to her daughter.

“She needs to have her medication evenly spaced out,” Porter said. “It’s very difficult to have her not able to take a dose at school.”

First approached by the Porter family last fall, DCSD administration has stood by its decision to keep its existing policy. The two main reasons: Marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law and the district’s current policy on administering prescription and over-the-counter medication is in compliance with the Colorado Nurse Practice Act. Porter and another Douglas County family continue to champion for an updated policy. Amber Wann’s son, a junior at Mountain Vista High School, uses medical cannabis to treat his epilepsy.

In a district that prides itself on

unity, Porter and Wann say they feel like their kids are being disregarded, their voices unheard. Both women, sometimes joined by their children, have spoken during public comment at numerous school board meetings.

Wann has repeatedly emailed board members and district staff to advocate for the policy change.

“I’m disheartened by the process,” Wann said. “Helping out one student helps out many in the future.”

The board of education has not discussed whether they agree or disagree with administration’s recommendation not to update the district’s policy, according to school board President David Ray. While he fully supports a parent’s decision to use whatever medical treatment necessary to help their child’s health issues, he said, updating the current policy would put too much responsibility on staff.

“Our current policy allowing parents to administer the substance on school grounds I support 100 percent,” Ray said in an email correspondence. “Unfortunately, this issue is complicated since the substance is not a federally approved pharmaceutical. This seems to place too much responsibility on staff when asking them to decide whether to volunteer to give it or not.”

Last August, Eagle County Schools, a district that serves the Vail area, became one of the first school districts in the nation to update its policy on administering medical marijuana.

The community has been supportive of the decision, Daniel Dougherty, chief communications officer, said in an email.

“Generally speaking, the benefit is that students prescribed nonpsychoactive CBD oil have a more normal learning experience, receiving medication just like other students,” Dougherty said. “Challenges still exist around administration on field trips, but have really been minimal.”

According to a memo from DCSD, the administration team has considered input and feedback from school leaders, including those who support the policy change. Still, administration will not be recommending a policy change.

Ray encourages parents to continue working with staff to seek creative solutions.

“Understandably, this is an extremely emotional issue for both district personnel and parents,” he said.

“Everyone wants to do what is in the best interest of the child, while ensuring that no one is being asked to take unreasonable risks.”

For Porter and Wann, the fight isn’t over “The only thing that we can do,” Porter said, “is continue to try to educate them on compassionate care and cannabis medicine.”

DCSD starts community conversation Feedback will be used to create a district-wide strategic plan

Dozens of parents trickled into the auditorium of Mountain Vista High School the evening of March 28 for one of three meetings across the county aimed at generating discussion about the Douglas County School District’s future. The goal is to promote what board of education members and district leaders call a “unity of purpose.”

The key question: What is best for students?

Input from families, students, teachers, building leaders and community members will be used to craft a strategic plan that will guide the district’s next three to five years.

Many parents say they support the inclusivity.

“I think it’s great to be able to have a voice,” said Kelly Maxam, a parent of two students at Eldorado Elementary School in Highlands Ranch. “I think it’s important — especially in public education — for everyone to feel that our voices are being heard.”

At each community conversation, guests were split into breakout groups in classrooms, where they voiced con-

Brad Wann, a Highlands Ranch parent, said he would like to see a districtwide closed campus, which would prohibit students from leaving school grounds during lunch.

“It’s something our school district should reconsider to keep our students safe,” Wann said in a classroom of about 10 people.

District staff recorded feedback gathered at the three community conversations and forwarded it to a consulting firm, Greenway Strategy Group. The Atlanta-based firm will formulate a data-driven online survey, which will be open to parents and students from April 1-7.

The district will host another set of community conversations in late April and early May to further discuss overarching themes identified in the survey.

Homeowners were temporarily displaced after a local 19-year-old crashed his car into two homes and four cars on a Highlands Ranch street, according to authorities.

Kyle Frendberg was taken into custody late March 27 and booked in the Douglas County jail on charges of driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and the use of alcohol by an underage person, according a Twitter post from the

Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office. His bond is set at $1,000.

South Metro Fire Rescue responded to the incident around 11:30 p.m.

March 27 near Colorado Boulevard and Copeland Street, according to South Metro’s Twitter.

The sheriff ’s office said Frendberg, who was driving a white Jeep, had been involved in a hit-and-run crash earlier that night near South Broadway and County Line Road. No injuries were reported in either incidents.

Homeowners whose garages were hit have been allowed back in their homes.

A motor vehicle crash damaged landscape and startled some residents of a neighborhood in western Highlands Ranch.

The evening of March 25, an Arapahoe County civilian employee went off the road, crashing into a tree and fence before landing in the backyard of a home in the Weatherstone Homeowners Association, near Weathersfield Way and Wildcat Reserve Parkway, according to resident who took photos of the aftermath.

Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office confirmed that the driver, whose name has not been made available, experienced a medical issue. No other injuries were reported.

5 things to know: New South Suburban rec center District expects three sheets of ice at recreation, admin facility combo

A chunk of land along East County Line Road near the north end of Highlands Ranch will soon see a nearly 200,000-square-foot building erected on it.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation District is moving forward with its plans for a new recreation complex that will also double as an administration office for the district. It will replace the 50-year-old South Suburban Ice Arena in Centennial near East Arapahoe Road, along with the current administration office just a short walk away from that arena.

The $50 million project will be built on what’s now the David A. Lorenz Regional Park Disc Golf Course, land that the district already owns, along the south Centennial border.

Here are a few things to know about the facility, which is expected to open in December 2020 at the southwest corner of County Line Road and South Holly Street.

THREE ICE SHEETS? The new center — which does not yet have a name — would feature a fieldhouse, gymnasiums,

offices, and food and drink, but some residents have expressed worry that the plans don’t increase capacity for ice hockey and figure skating.

Hockey has grown in popularity in the district, Dirk Doty, with the district’s hockey programs, has said, and the district’s leagues were nearly at capacity recently. With school districts moving students to later start times and letting them out later, scheduling skating classes is getting more difficult, Gerry Lane, with the district’s figure skating program, has said.

Local residents have expressed concern that the new center wouldn’t increase the district’s number of ice sheets — currently, the ice arena has two.

South Suburban previously reached out to the Highlands Ranch Metro District for a partnership, requesting $10 million to pay for an additional sheet of ice. The metro district rejected the proposal last summer, with board members saying they didn’t see the benefit to the community.

After some uncertainty, South Suburban “is planning on three sheets of ice,” said Becky Grubb, who spoke for South Suburban. “We will know more as cost estimates and bids are received.”

CHEAPER THAN RENOVATION A cost analysis determined it would be less effective to remodel the decades-old ice arena at 6580 S. Vine St. than build-

ing the new facility, according to the district.

That’s because the current ice arena now sits over a layer of soil permanently frozen by the rinks, according to the district. The ice is causing upheaval beneath the rinks, and it’s unknown how deep the ice goes.

Thawing the ice could take years and cause more upheaval.

DISC GOLF’S FUTURE South Suburban isn’t planning to build a replacement disc golf course in the district, although “options are being explored for a replacement course in the general vicinity,” Grubb said.

“The disc golf community expressed their desire for a replacement course,” Grubb said. “Since constructed, the course has been a regional draw, but the location was always intended as a temporary use.”

The last day of play on the course will be April 14, around when construction on the new facility begins, according to the district’s website.

SERVING MANY NEEDS The new facility aims to address many community needs and interests, Grubb

said.

South Suburban’s master plan identified a need for more indoor recreation opportunities and replacing aging facilities, Grubb said.

“The new facility will also provide a variety of options,” Grubb added.

“It will include a fieldhouse with two synthetic turf fields for sports like lacrosse and soccer, and two gymnasiums for pickleball, basketball, volleyball and more.”

The center will also offer “an abundance” of locker rooms and spectator seating, a restaurant and bar, a board room, and rental space for parties and meetings — along with South Suburban’s administrative offices.

FITTING INTO NETWORK The facility will not be a traditional recreation center, Grubb said. South Suburban owns and operates four “full-service” recreation centers, and two are within a five-mile radius of the new complex’s site, Grubb added.

South Suburban Ice Arena will close when the new complex opens and will be repurposed for use by the district at a future date, Grubb said.

The Highlands Ranch Metro District, in partnership with South Suburban Parks and Recreation, is considering a disc golf course in the open space behind its administrative office, south of Plaza Drive and west of South Broadway. The proposed 60-acre course, dubbed the West Fork Disc Golf Course, would have 18 holes.

At a March 26 metro district board meeting, directors approved a conceptual design study for the course’s parking lot and pedestrian crossing — the bulk of the project’s $335,000 cost. Pending approval from South Surburban’s board of directors, it would cover $100,000.

The parking lot would be located off South Broadway, just north of a business park with Walgreens and Tokyo Joe’s.

“It’s purely conceptual design at this point to see if it will even work,” said Nick Adamson, the metro district’s natural resource manager.

South Suburban is closing its existing disc golf course east of David A. Lorenz Regional Park, 8422 S Colorado Blvd., on April 14 as it begins construction on a new facility. That has some players of the sport worried about their options in the south metro Denver area.

In the competitive game of disc golf, players throw plastic discs at elevated, stationary metal baskets placed throughout natural terrain.

The concept is similar to traditional golf — you want to hit a target in the least number of throws.

“It’s really just hiking and throw-

ing,” Chris Reed, an avid disc golfer from Highland Ranch, said.

Highlands Ranch has an existing nine-hole course, Martin Walworth Disc Golf at Grace Presbyterian Church, off Sante Fe Drive, between Town Center and Highlands Ranch Parkway. Some high schools in the area also utilize courses, which have limited hours for the public.

In its 2016 capital improvement planning process, the metro district added a disc golf course to its threeyear project forecast, with proposed implementation occurring in 2019.

Such a course would enhance recreational opportunities in the community, according to metro district staff.

At the March 26 meeting, Reed and several other disc golfers — from Highlands Ranch and surrounding communities — voiced their support for the proposed Highlands Ranch course. The sport, which they describe as competitive, convenient and family-oriented, has a strong following in the metro Denver area, they said.

“It’s kind of surprising, with Highlands Ranch and what a great community it is, that there is not a good disc golf course,” resident Janell Smith said. “It’s a great sport at the activity level, it’s inexpensive for people.”

Aside from the occasional mowing, maintenance of the type of course is relatively low, according to Adamson.

In the next month, Adamson and his staff will bring before the board a conceptual design for the parking lot, as well as feedback from adjacent businesses and neighbors.

Metro district staff will mail postcards to property owners and go door-to-door, according to Adamson.

As for a timeline on the disc golf course, Adamson said: “We don’t have a determined date at this time.

We want to first make sure that we’ve heard from the community.”

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards 10 Denver area Target accepting applications stores to undergo remodeling this year

The program is said to produce leaders, challenge grit and change perspective. The simplicity of the outdoors, combined with the complexity of hundreds of young people from a fourstate region, is life changing, organizers say.

It’s the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards — a five-day, expense-paid conference held in July at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park. Rotarians from districts 5440 and 5450, covering parts of Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and Idaho, select the young men and women to attend.

The week features a mix of activities, speakers, small group discussions and large group presentations. In one activity, for example, participants will find a solution to an issue facing their schools, such as substance use or the pressure of social media.

What makes the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) stand out from other leadership camps is the concept, Denver-area Rotarians say.

“RYLA is not a bunch of old guys standing up preaching to young people how to be a leader,” said Bill manning, of Evergreen, who has been involved with RYLA for 16 years. “What it is, is youth leading youth, peer to peer.”

Emily Ostdiek, a head counselor who attended the conference two years ago, participated in student government, her school’s newspaper, DECA and National Honor Society.

But, she said, the people who go to RYLA don’t fit a mold.

“They are going to pick a bunch of different people for a bunch of different reasons,” Ostdiek, from Nebraska, said.

RYLA bettered Ostdiek by increasing her compassion for others and teaching her to listen more, she said. She looks forward to having a similar impact on this year’s campers.

“In that environment, you’re with people that want you to be your best you,” Ostdiek said. “In that space, you have room to explore and fail, knowing that everyone is going to be lifting you up.”

Company to spend $150 million over two years to upgrade Denver area shops STAFF REPORT

Target is planning to invest about $150 million over two years to remodel a number of its stores in the Denver metro area, according to a news release.

In 2019, 10 stores will be remodeled, and a handful more will get upgrades in 2020, the release said. The stores are part of Target’s broader investment to remodel more than 1,000 stores around the country by the end of 2020, the release said.

It’s the fourth consecutive year the county secured the top spot on the foundation’s list. Its 2019 County Health Rankings report assessed aspects of community life such as the physical environment, social and economic factors, clinical care, health behaviors and the overall quality of life.

The county was also among places researched last year as part of the American Communities Project, a social science and journalism initiative from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The project’s first report, released in 2018, used Douglas County as an example of “The Exurb,” or places located on the edge of a major metropolitan area that are generally wealthy, well-educated and are not “especially diverse,” according to the ACP website. There were 222 exurbs in the U.S. at the time the report was released.

The ACP noted Douglas County’s quality of life in the face of rapid growth. Residents overwhelmingly consider it a good place to raise a family. A plethora of open space and recreational opportunities are available.

But the county’s growth — the population shot from 285,465 in 2010 to 328,632 by the 2016 Census Population Estimates — set it apart from other exurbs, ACP reported. A 2017 survey found 81 percent of voters believed the county was growing too fast.

Internet shows that you can’t spell ‘antisocial’ without ‘social’

very day, every single day, maybe on the hour, someone is shamed, chided, ridiculed, put down and QUIET disrespected because of an image of DESPERATION them or a comment they made that was posted on social media.

And then the bad blood begins.

There’s a very old joke about the man who goes to his doctor and says, Craig Marshall “Doc, every time I hit my hand with Smith a hammer, well, it hurts.”

Doctor says, “Want my advice?

Stop hitting your hand with a hammer.”

I know this is too simple and simplistic for people who are smitten and taken and enamored with social media, but all anyone has to do, to avoid being shamed, chided, and ridiculed, is to quit social media.

Otherwise, your complaints fall on (my) deaf ears.

For many, such as we have become, being on social media is a requisite. It’s not even a choice.

Not being on social media is about as uncool as it gets.

And we all want to be cool, with it, and awesome, don’t we?

I promise you: Someone will breast-feed in public tomorrow, and

post an image of it, and then be slammed from here to Dairyland.

(We) can’t seem to resist sharing our special moments with the world, but try, try, try.

I know I am an exception. Not on social media, and don’t have a cellphone. No selfies here. Don’t know what Instagram is or why anyone needs it or wants it. As previously commented: I have no truck with influencers.

The last update for FCC guidelines regarding human exposure to radiofrequencies from cell towers was 23 years ago. Much has changed since then and those guidelines are obsolete.

Researchers, scientists and doctors from around the world have studied this issue and found serious health risks resulting from exposure to EMFs (electromagnetic fields). Multiple countries have banned wireless technology inside schools and nurseries due to the fact that EMFs (including Wi-Fi) are more active in children than adults. EMFs also affect pets, wildlife,

Real estate studies show a 20 percent drop in property values for homes near cell towers. Even the “aesthetically pleasing” cell towers cause harm.

There is a lot of money to be made by telecommunication companies on 5G and there is a lucrative revolving door between the wireless lobby and the FCC. Many cities and counties across the U.S. have filed lawsuits challenging the FCC on this issue.

Let’s hope HRCA and Douglas County will stand up and fight for Highlands Ranch citizens rather than rolling over with the usual excuse “it is out of our hands.”

When our sail is attached to someone else’s boat

oo often we seem to attach our sail to someone else’s boat, don’t we? Or, we hitch our wagon to someone else’s horse and let others control or dictate our direction in life. Their goals don’t just become our goals, their goals become the tasks and the todo’s we live out each day as we watch our WINNING own dreams fade WORDS into the distance.

As an on-again/ off-again entrepreneur trapped inside a corporate executive’s body, I totally get this concept.

There are times when I have built my own boat and set my own sails Michael Norton and have met with tremendous success. And there have been other endeavors where, let’s just say my boat took on too much water, ending my venture with my sails tattered and torn.

But, in both victory and defeat, the sails were mine, the boat was mine, and the dreams and goals were mine.

The concept is not just for entrepreneurs — the idea of having our own goals and dreams is for everyone. When we are happily employed

and engaged in meaningful work that satisfies our own desires that is a beautiful thing too. When we feel fulfilled and when we feel like we are contributing to the greater good, this is a wonderful outcome.

Our sails are absolutely attached to the right boat or our horses are hitched to the right wagon. Life is good.

The trick is knowing and understanding when we are doing things that are as meaningful and purpose-driven for ourselves as they are for our employer or any organization we serve. Because, believe it or not, there are people and companies out there who still believe that we should be in it for their personal gain and not our own. They set our goals and objectives for us, they establish our quotas, our tasks and to-dos are on their radar as they try and manage our deliverables and results. Good management, strong leadership, and companies with a great “people-driven culture” will know how to motivate the right behaviors and manage the proper expectations and results.

Compile family health history to help guide care

enetic testing for cancer risk and other conditions has advanced rapidly in the last few years. It is more widely available and affordable now, thanks to changes in technology and competition among labs offering the tests.

Your family health history is often a valuable tool that you and your physicians can use to make sure you are receiving the appropriate screening and prevention options.

For example, this information can tell your physicians what types of cancer screenings you qualify for, how often your cholesterol should be checked, or if you meet the requirements for any genetic testing that may help to further evaluate your risks. Gathering and documenting a family health history can also benefit future generations since your children, grandchildren, and beyond can benefit from the effort you put into gathering your family health history.

To document a health history, gather information for at least three generations of relatives related to you by blood: parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, children and grandchildren.

Information to gather: • First name • Relationship to you (example: aunt, grandfather, etc.)

• What side of the family they are from (mother’s or father’s) • How old individuals are or how old they were when they passed

Wander + Ivy turns customers into casual sommeliers

That follows a week of activities beginning on Palm Sunday, aiming to prepare people to reflect on the biblical story of Easter, said the Rev. Brian Winter of Christ’s Episcopal Church.

onvenience is king in today’s consumer market. Entertainment, food and clothing have all seen significant convenience advancements in recent years and now, thanks to Highlands resident Dana Spaulding, wine might be next in line.

With the October launch of her company, Wander + Ivy, Spaulding aims COMING make it easier for ATTRACTIONS to wine drinkers to have a glass without the guilt that comes from not finishing the bottle.

“I was getting frustrated because I would want a nice glass of wine with dinner, but I was certain to waste Clarke Reader it because I’d only want one glass,” Spaulding explained.

“My husband, Gus, asked me if I was going to waste another bottle of wine and that started me thinking about alternatives.”

Spaulding started exploring the single serve options in the market but couldn’t find something she really enjoyed. She wanted a more premium package and product for the casual drinker and so Wander + Ivy, which offers four wines — rosé, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and a red blend — in 6.3-ounce wine bottles was born.

The October launch was the result of more than a year of research and preparation, which included getting her sommelier certification, branding groundwork and finding vineyards that can offer organic products.

“I was looking for natural and organic ingredients in my wine, and I couldn’t find that in most single-serve options,” Spaulding explained. “I found it really interesting to explore what the organic ingredient movement means for wine. The same reasons people eat organically, they should also drink.”

In the handful of months since she launched Wander + Ivy, Spaulding has already found a home for her wines in about 60 liquor stores in the state, including Littleton, Denver and Wheat Ridge. Her dedication to the local community extends to the company’s standing as an One Percent For the Planet member. This means Wander + Ivy donates 1 percent of gross profits to Colorado charities.

here’s a common theme on listings for Easter egg hunts in the Denver Metro area.

Don’t be late. The events begin precisely on time — and they’re over in a flash.

Cynthia Bauman knows exactly why. When the Golden Kiwanis Club holds its annual Easter egg hunt at Parfet Park, it’s a sight to behold, she said. Volunteers disperse roughly 6,000 colored eggs “scattered like gum drops all over the park.” They divide kids into three age groups, and at 10 a.m. sharp, volunteers ring the bell.

Then chaos, albeit adorable chaos, unfolds.

“At 10:03 it’s over. The eggs are like vacuumed off the lawn. It’s amazing,” Bauman said.

Cougar Run students take Battle of the Books Districtwide book bee quizzes students on plots, characters, themes

It all led to this moment: the team of five Cougar Run Elementary fifth- and sixth-grade students posing with a silver trophy and ear-to-ear smiles and a banner that read “Mission Accomplished.”

For six months, those students and eight other teams from around the Douglas County School District practiced and prepared for this, the district finals of Battle of the Books, a spelling bee-type trivia contest based on 10 children’s novels for students from third to sixth grade. This Cougar Run team edged out Parker Core Knowledge in the championship round of the Battle of the Books March 27.

The team, some of them strangers in October, practiced tirelessly for this competition. They voluntarily missed recess and spent hours reading, and reading, and reading. Jennifer Bosley, a volunteer coach for the team, said most read each of the 10 books six times through. Leading up to the finals, the team practiced every day.

“They’ve gotten to know each other a lot better. They’ve gotten to know each other’s quirks and personalities and it’s just fun to watch them gel,” Bosely said.

In the third- and fourth-grade group, Heritage (Highlands Ranch) and Frontier Valley (Parker) made it to the semi-final round. DCS Montessori (Castle Rock) took the top spot over

Redstone (Lone Tree) in the finals. The fourth- and fifth-grade Redstone team also made the semi-finals, as did Clear Sky (Castle Rock).

“Not all kids are meant to be, or want to be, athletes,” said Kerri Morgan, head of special events at Douglas County Libraries. “Battle of the Books gives those kids the opportunity to represent their schools with pride, and to be able to participate in a competitive event that doesn’t require athletic ability.”

In the story, raccoons tried to save a swamp from a man trying to turn it into an alligator and pony show. The raccoons became the team’s mascot.

“I bring out a piece of paper about team, and how it takes the T-E-A-M to bring you all together, and they have to find that,” said Wendy Jo Woody, the Cougar Run librarian and Battle of the Books coach. “They came in not being best friends. We said, `If you can bring that together, you guys can go very far.’”

Maniacal mystery tour — from Parker author Becky Clark writes as career in ‘cozy’ genre that avoids questionable material

“All these people (I invent) have to do as I say,” cracks “cozy” mystery writer and Parker resident Becky Clark, as she talks about her processes in writing a new book.

First comes an outline, she says, with a “pretty standard template … I start with an idea — a series is easier.”

Her latest book, “Foul Play on Words,” is the second tale featuring her mystery writer—and mystery-solver, Charlemagne, “Charlee” Russo as a focal figure. Hart’s humorous world view kicks in early and often…

Russo arrives in rainy Portland expecting to be the keynote speaker at a mystery writers’ conference, organized by her close friend Viv, but learns right away that Hanna, Viv’s daughter, has been kidnapped. Viv tells Charlee to take charge of the conference while Viv searches for Hanna.

Turns out when our heroine arrives at the conference hotel, that all is not neatly in place!

To begin with, most volunteers are out with food poisoning — acquired while checking samples of the planned lunch — and the chef is missing??? As Charlee proceeds to the Clackamas Room to meet volunteers and begin to handle supplies, she finds Lily and Orville, “awaiting instructions.”

Boxes sit unopened and gift packs are not assembled at all. Lily giggles a lot and Orville, who claims to be “a computer guy,” doesn’t have one with him to check on how registration is coming. (The hotel’s website is down.)

Emblems need to be ironed on Tshirts, etc., etc. Where to start?

And a couple of hotel employees, Jack and Sarah, heard talking about the missing Hanna, are under Charlee’s suspicion and need to be watched carefully … Who are they meeting with? The missing girl’s boyfriend?

What can she find out about him except that he delivers Chinese food from his mom’s restaurant? She follows him of course.

And, it turns out, the hotel staff has double-booked the conference rooms — with a dog show. “We thought they’d be coming next year,” the blueblazered staffer says, “but it was this year. Isn’t that silly?”

A favorite scene for this reader was when the dog owners begin to arrive and rearrange the lobby furniture into an agility practice course for “Sparkle,” a terrier type and other athletic dogs of all shapes and sizes to practice their routines. (Clark says she’s a dog lover and always has them around her.) Those owners are another scene unto themselves.

In the meantime, assorted people appear for the conference — with funny names and individual quirks, causing Charlee to consider more

kidnapping suspects.

Clark speaks of developing some of her characters by speculating about the subjects of celebrity photos … and speaks of the characteristics of a “cozy” mystery: “Somebody will die; who is murdered and why? How will killer and victim intersect with each other? (This had to happen yesterday!)

One goes back and forth through the story …(`don’t use first three ideas — too outlandish’), cozy mysteries can’t have much foul language and no sex and violence — but what happens can really be outlandish — there’s a huge suspension of disbelief … I try for a murder or kidnapping …”

Clark notes that generally, cozy mysteries are OK for teens to read— “they’re pretty clean.” And, she notes that there’s always a dog on her website — begging for a cookie. (This scene repeated while we were chatting and her furry buddy stopped by for a treat.)

How did this obviously rewarding career come about? “I started in the insurance business,” Clark said. She stayed home with her three kids in the same Parker home for years). “During nap time, I started to knock out personal essays. I sold one — stunning to me! The most exciting $50 ever. I have a degree in criminal justice and English … was interested in famous people. I read to my kids and took my son to the library where he couldn’t find one he was interested in that he hadn’t already read. `Why don’t you write one?’ he suggested. “I did, in 2001 and was underway. (It’s still in the drawer.)”

Clark says she lives “in a constant churn” of new ideas. Her agent is shopping a series set in the crossword puzzle world. “And there’s the one I’m working on today — no one’s dead yet.” She finds that publishers like to buy a series — typically a three book deal — “they can renew if it’s selling well.”

She keeps large files on newspaper clippings — sometimes a single sentence starts a book going. “Who will live in this world? ... What if a body? … I eavesdrop on people, in restaurants and elsewhere, pretending to be on my phone … I see a house — that’s where they live…” She has a standalone mystery in mind about those residents.

She is a member of the local chapter of Sisters in Crime, an international organization, and calls on friends to review a new manuscript for her.

“It’s nice to have a tribe like that.”

She also sends new work to her agent to critique. And she enjoys local and national conventions — some for fans and authors — both famous and notso-famous. She teaches workshops for wannabe writers.

She tells them to network locally and nationally and especially recommends the Pikes Peak Writers Conference in Colorado Springs (May 3-5 in 2019).

She’ll need to find a new publisher for the third book in her Charlee Russo series as Midnight Ink has closed — and she is working on another series. She also writes non-fiction and teaches a workshop: “How to write a

novel in eight weeks.”

Her career is sustaining, she says — it’s a full-time job. Her daughter is a professional editor and she tries to deliver “an as clean as possible” manuscript to her agent.

that wild animals won’t eat tattoos — so a book could start with the discovery of a tattooed body … Gems of information accumulate at the group’s quarterly meetings. The club in Parker meets at the Vine, near her.

‘Tangible Terrain’ has unusual touch Show features work of four artists during theater run

Four area artists will exhibit works in a variety of mediums during the theater run of “The World Goes Round” at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center. They are Stephanie O’Malley, photography; Herb Dreo, wood carving; Vanessa Martin, botanical drawing; and Andi Burum, a special collage technique. Their “Tangible Terrain” exhibit runs through April 28 and is open weekdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during productions.

Exhibits are intended to have some relationship to the production that’s running onstage upstairs, which is fun to contemplate. In this case, title, materials and subjects would seem to connect, be it a carved wooden owl, a poppy photo or …

• Andi Burnum org. writes: “You can regularly find me hunched over my desk, tweezers in hand, obsessively searching through magazines for the perfect color. My art is created by tearing magazines (mostly National Geographic) and gluing them together to form pictures that from a distance, appear to be oil paintings.” She has been refining her technique for 18 years and says her subject matter includes “soulful dogs and cows.” She has a herd of red Angus she likes to hang out with and lives in Evergreen with husband, dogs and cats … She also does dog portrait commissions and mosaic art.

• Herb Dreo is a wood carver who inherited his tools and talent from his father, a master carver from Austria — and additional carving tools from his father-in-law. He says his hobbies are outdoor-oriented: skiing, biking, and being in the mountains.

Drawing lessons helped him become a better carver. He also enjoys turning bowls and other objects on his lathe. His work is in three Colorado galleries.

• Vanessa Martin lives in Aurora — on Colorado’s plains, where flora grow that inspire her. She trained as a botanical illustrator at Denver Botanic Gardens and fuses art and science within that tradition. She works in a variety of mediums: intaglio, watercolor, colored pencil. Her work is on display at Lakewood Art Gallery and she has exhibited widely in the metro area.

On Easter Sunday, April 21, they hold two services, wrapping up the week of festivities with a brunch and Easter egg hunt.

“We have lots of visitors on Easter,” Winter said. “There is no judgment as you come in. Whether you’re here every Sunday or just Easter and Christmas, all are welcome.”

Also in Castle Rock is the annual “Special Egg Hunt” hosted by Front Range Church at Douglas County High School. Organizer Jenifer Prosser says the public event caters to children young and old but also to families with special needs. They hold it on April 13, starting at 11 a.m., so families aren’t overwhelmed with too many events on Easter weekend.

They have traditional egg hunts but also ones designed for mobilityimpaired children, egg hunts that use beepers for visually impaired children, and a sensory-friendly hunt.

They expect about 2,000 people this year. Prosser said they get emails after each event from families whose child was able to attend an egg hunt for the first time because of the inclusive activities.

“We just want to bridge that gap and meet families where they are,” Prosser said.

For those families, Donna Charbonnier of Ciancio’s Restaurant in Westminster is ready to take care of them. The eatery located at the Greg

Mastriona Golf Courses at Hyland Hills is a family operation run by Charbonnier and her brother. For nearly 10 years they have offered a reservation-only Easter brunch that

Staff break down walls, open up the space, decorate for Easter and put up a large screen to play the film “Easter Parade.” This year’s event runs from 10 a.m. to noon on April 21 and is capped at 150 guests. The menu boasts eggs Benedict, homemade green chili, scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, meatballs, biscuits and gravy and more.

Charbonnier said the brunch is a tradition for many families, and one in high demand.

“We had them calling in February,” she said. “There’s a lot of big families that will come back year after year.”

Bauman said they are looking forward to this year’s egg hunt, which takes place on April 20, and are welcoming volunteers. Those who want to help set up can arrive at 8:30 that morning before watching little egg hunters descend on the park.

“Kids are just scooping them into their baskets. They’re so joyful,” she said. “It’s so cute.”

Tailoring your resume to fit your sector Don’t stray from the job description: While it’s important to get the personal summary right, provide experience, education and knowledge - it’s still important to align the resume to the job description.

Whether it’s someone skimming or computer software – you want the keywords of your resume, cover letter and personal summary to align with those specified in the job description.

Depending on the industry in which you are aiming to get hired, your resume could be the key to your success. Whether it be a position in the public sector, a technology job or in education – your resume is going to be key to getting your foot in the door.

Government Work There are perks to getting a job in the public sector. A lot of it centers on benefits, security and good hours. But, you have to get the job first. Even if you have all the experience for the job, applying for a public-sector job is completely different than applying with a private company.

When applying for a public position, it’s important to remember that keywords matter less, given a robot isn’t going to be reading it. In fact, your resume should be as humanized as possible given it will be read by actual people, even a group on a hiring committee from multiple departments.

Some tips to remember in applying for a public job include: Keep it traditional: Stick to the look in resume and cover letter that stays professional and doesn’t get too fancy. Use conservative font to

outline your experience, education and achievements.

Follow the steps: Procedures have to be followed in public-sector positions. Deviating from steps outlines in the job description and post could mean you missing the finalist list of candidates for interviews.

Be specific and thorough: While traditionally its been said to keep your resume short and to only one page. However, for a public position, it’s important to provide details.

Share as much pertinent information as possible to state your case for the position.

Be personable: As stated above, there is not a robot or quick resume skimmer that decides the best possible candidates to interview. Instead, it is a real person who understands what it takes to work a government job where you likely will deal with the public. They are looking for a true person and not just keywords.

Use clear and concise statements.

Technology Jobs Unlike a government job, unless you are applying for a job in the public sector, getting a tech job requires clear, concise information on your experience, certifications and education.

Personal summary: The first step in creating a resume for a tech job is to knock the personal summary out of the park. With the right wording, expressions and information the personal summary can get you a step forward with the application. However, worded incorrectly, especially when it’s a tech department sifting through the material, you may lose consideration before they even start skimming further down the page.

In a summary paragraph, including the title of the job for which you are seeking, experience and a quick rundown of qualifications.

Skill set: It’s important to really list and be thorough in supplying your qualifications that proves you meet the skill set required for the job in which you are applying. While some outside the tech industry may think they are reading a foreign language, tech industry professionals understand and want to know.

Explain areas in which you are an expert, explain areas you are knowledgable and clearly list areas in which you have experience.

What to leave in, what to leave out: Remember to include the parts of your work history that are relevant to the position. Leave out the rest.

Also, include personal details fitting to the position. Include all information regarding your achievements in the field.

A position in Education Education is one of those fields where you can be hired in either the public or private sector. It’s an area where you have stability in hours worked, and it is also increasingly demanding as much as positions in the education field are in demand.

Getting a job in education requires specific skills as much as it requires experiences and credentials. Some of those skills include adaptability, dedication, creativity and the ability to be an effective communicator.

In creating a good resume and building a career in education, some tips to keep in mind include: Gaining experience: The more experience you have, the more willing institutions are to hire you.

Degrees and certifications: Any time you are teaching, or participating in educating any age group, it’s important to have the degrees required by the schools and institutions. However, it’s just as important to show in a resume that you’ve kept up and evolved. Times change, which requires more certifications, updated practices and proof that you stay with the times.

Appearance matters: We aren’t talking about the clothing you choose or how you sit and carry yourself during an interview – we are talking about the resume. Your resume must have a professional look, be well organized. Remember, even in education, a resume may only be skimmed for up to 30 seconds.

It’s time for teens to start applying for summer jobs It’s the time of year where the school year is wrapping up and teenagers may start thinking about what to do this summer. Instead of just sitting at home and scrolling the iPhone screen, one option is to take advantage of the many job opportunities available today.

This is the time of year where many public and private entities are looking for summer help to provide entertainment and programs to youth and families.

Take Pirates Cove for instance. The Englewood water park is currently seeking lifeguards for the summer with plans to open on May 25. Area teenagers have an opportunity to gain valuable experience, and make up to $12.30 an hour.

Brad Anderson, senior facilities supervisor of aquatics for the Town of Englewood, said getting a summer job as a life guard or with their summer services gives teenagers a great sense of team work.

“The team environment is probably the most important thing,” he said.

“Then, you get to make a difference

in people’s lives. As a lifeguard you save lives, you mentor and you gain a true sense of belonging.”

Anderson said the starting age for hiring lifeguards is 15 as long as they can pass certification requirements.

“We will hire you at any age as long as you come with a willingness to work,” Anderson added.

Other summer programs are also in search of summer help, it just takes some searching on metro government websites in communities such as Castle Rock, Parker,

Lakewood, Golden and others.

Besides something to do over the summer, getting and keeping a summer job has the following benefits for teens: Responsibility Success in the adult world is contingent on what teens learn as kids. A summer job helps them budget their time, understand expectations and thinking about future growth and success.

Financial education A growing number of young people are graduating high school and entering college without any financial knowledge, meaning they can’t manage a budget, fill out financial paperwork or plan ahead. Having a job and managing money over the summer can help educate for the future.

Self-growth Success in a summer job not only earns valuable connections, but also gives local teens the opportunity for self-growth in gain self-esteem in a job well done.

San Luis Valley is seasonal paradise for birders Greater sandhill cranes create rewarding show with actions and sounds

From late February to early April, and again in the fall, one can easily watch — and hear — a huge, distinctive bird, the greater sandhill crane, as flocks stop to rest, en route from winter homes in New Mexico to nesting sites in northern Yellowstone and along Wyoming’s northern border, and again during the return flight in September ...

Colorado’s San Luis Valley and an area along the Yampa River both serve as a refuge for these four-foot-tall birds with a six-foot wingspan, as they call back and forth to each other.

Members of my family look forward to an annual mid-March trek to Monte Vista to watch and listen for a few days ...

Rites of spring!

And once you’ve seen a flock of these flying fossils take flight in the early evening, against an orange sky — still calling to the others — you’ll never forget it.

Nor will others, who write ...

Here and there birds bow and leap, fan their wings and prance around as part of an elaborate courtship dance ... the air fills with their raucous calls, which merge into a kind of trilling when many birds are calling ... The sight of dozens of sandhill cranes feeding in a stubble field seems like a scene from another epoch ...”

Famous conservationist/writer Aldo Leopold commented: “Our appreciation for the crane grows with the slow encroachment of earthly history. His tribe, we now know, stems out of the remote Eocene. He is the symbol of our untamed past with that incredible sweep of the millennia that underlies and conditions the daily affairs ...”

Somewhere in the San Luis Valley, there is 5,000-year-old rock art that shows a flock of cranes in flight — just as a visitor sees them today.

And, there’s an ancient cottonwood tree where a great horned owl is sitting on a nest ...

The wildlife refuge is planned with cranes in mind — wetlands where they can forage for small water creatures and nearby fields where farmers leave a goodly portion of barley and wheat after they harvest. One sees thousands of birds in the morning — until about 10, when they fly away to good places

Colorado’s San Luis Valley and an area along the Yampa River both serve as a refuge for these four-foot-tall birds with a six-foot wingspan, as they call back and forth to each other.

They return to several sites near the refuge about 4 p.m. and forage — and call and dance until sunset, when groups begin to take to the air, still communicating in that ancient language, as they leave to roost in water for the night.

Next morning, same routine — they need to store up multiple calories for the next long flight north, where pairs — mated for life — will nest and raise one, or possibly two chicks who will accompany them back south in the fall. They keep the offspring with them for about a year, so a visitor will notice smaller brownish adolescent birds hovering near a pair — not ready to mate for another year or two.

One wonders how to spell the sound of that call — is it “kraaak? kraall? krooll?” (all with a definite rhythm and the combined trilling effect Gray describes).

It’s about a four-hour drive on U.S. 285 from the Denver area, past South Park, Fairplay and Buena Vista, catching your breath at the sight of Collegiate Range to the west.

Our group stretched it into a twoday drive, with a stop at Cottonwood Canyon Hot Springs for the night, a soak and a nice dinner in Buena Vista.

And, since there was a birthday to celebrate, a next-day stop at Sunflour

Bakery and Café, on the highway into Monte Vista — for lunch and “birthday pie.” (Hours are limited to breakfast and lunch, and that pie is really special!)

We checked in at a family favorite: the Movie Manor Inn, decorated throughout with scenes from memorable films and names of actors ...

My offspring, now 60-ish, remember watching movies from our beds during summer trips, which are still in operation in warm weather, but not now.

Finally, it’s time to drive south on Highway 15 to the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge and adjacent fields, where birds fly in for a late afternoon meal. (Teatime?) From about 4 p.m. to 6 or 7 p.m., thousands of these birds fly in calling, land with feet forward and begin to munch, interspersed by some with those distinctive dance moves and more calls. They feed for a couple of hours, then it’s time to go to a roosting spot for the night. By standing in water, they are less vulnerable to predators, such as coyotes.

With morning comes a repeat of routine — for cranes and birders ... In a month or so, cranes will fly north, but they can be observed again in mid-September — also an especially pleasant time for travel in Colorado.

The setting is the break room at a Detroit auto plant, with a high window that looks out onto the assembly line, a cavernous space beyond. There is a block of small personal lockers, a strip with sink, refrigerator, coffee maker … We don’t get the associated factory noise, but a series of animated films streamed across that window somehow imply it, in a clever set detail for Dominique Morriseau’s “Skeleton Crew” at Curious Theatre through April 13.

It is part of a three-play series: “The Detroit Project,” which gave us “Detroit 67” last season. Curious’ director donnie l. betts, a longtime part of Denver’s theater community, said it tells “of those with less opportunity to prosper.” Characters, especially Faye (strong actress Perri Gaffney), who is approaching a 30-year anniversary, seem locked into a particular culture of auto workers and have difficulty seeing beyond the world shown.

‘If it’s predictable, it’s preventable’ South Metro, Lone Tree Police, RTD practice emergency response on new light rail track

In the event of an emergency situation, communication and experience is invaluable, South Metro Fire Rescue Training Capt. Chris Wells said. So, they practice it.

The Regional Transportation District, South Metro Fire Rescue and Lone Tree Police Department drilled an emergency scenario on the newly built light rail track, part of the Southeast Rail Extension project, March 23. The three agencies practiced responding to an emergency on the bridge between the new Sky Ridge and RidgeGate stations.

“What’s important is, and what adds another level of difficulty, is this is taking place on a bridge,” said RTD spokeswoman Lisa Trujillo. “What it does is it helps everyone test their communication and response efforts just in case this happens in real life, and this is a safe, closed environment to do so.”

The first responders were not given the scenario beforehand to simulate a live emergency situation. RTD facilitated the drill.

Rescue workers drilled treating and moving passengers who sustained injuries. The drill lasted about two hours.

In the drill, after the passengers were evacuated, the firefighters jacked up one side of the train to access underneath and used a service crane to provide equipment.

“Whenever we do preparedness drills like this, it’s important to remember the train is live with electricity, so before any responders can approach the train, RTD has to turn the power off in order

to make it safe for the first responders to tend to the passengers,” Trujillo said.

RTD completes emergency drilling scenarios with each newly constructed project. The drills are meant to help familiarize the first responders with the new track and some of the unique aspects of the area, like the bridge that crosses over I-25 to East RidgeGate.

“We don’t even have maps here because it hasn’t been fully constructed yet. It added to that dimension of the unknown,” Wells said. “What we found is if it’s predicable, it’s preventable…

The Southeast Rail Extension will officially open for public use May 19, with a grand opening scheduled two days before that. The project includes 2.3 miles of new track laid south from the Lincoln Station and three new stations.

“Communications between the three agencies is always challenging, so to make sure we understand if we wait 20 to 30 minutes into the scene before we unify our command, it really is chaotic,” Wells said. “This really proved how important it is to unify our command early on.”

Let’s go fly a kite at annual festival Arvada event celebrates 17 years of outdoor fun

When the Kite Festival in Arvada started in 2002, it provided a way for families to enjoy the outdoors. Today, it is one of the metro area’s biggest celebrations of spring.

“It’s all about families having fun outside,” said Brenda Berg, special events coordinator for the city of Arvada. “It’s not to be a financial burden on anyone.

Everyone can get out and enjoy the day.”

The free event, which takes place during National Kite Month, returns to Stenger Soccer Complex Sunday, April 7.

Attendees will have the option to bring their own kites or buy them at the event.

Kids can also get in on the fun in the

days leading up to the event by attending a kite-making class at Majestic View Nature Center, 7030 Garrison St, Arvada.

“It’s a chance for kids to make their own kite and learn why it’s that shape,” said Mike Dempsey, educator at Majestic View. “It’s getting them a little more involved in the festival when they do their own kite-making.”

Kite-making classes will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, April 5, and at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, for youths ages 4 to 10. Cost is $5 with materials included. To register, visit arvada.org/public-classes.

Quality depth is important for any good high school basketball team.

That’s why there are seven players each on the 2018-19 boys and girls Colorado Community Media All-South Metro teams.

Players are eligible from schools in the Douglas County and Littleton districts, plus Valor Christian, Englewood, Cherry Creek and Lutheran high schools. The team was selected by the CCM sports staff, with input from coaches.

Scoring, rebounding and leadership are prominent on both teams.

Castle View’s Chase Hettinger, Julian Hammond III of Cherry Creek and Brendan Temple of Douglas County are the top scorers with 22.1, 20.5 and 17.6 scoring averages, respectively, on the boys team, and they have plenty of point support from the rest of the players.

Kobe Sanders of Chaparral is one of the leaders, along with teammate Tanner Giles. Austin Holt of ThunderRidge and Ben Grusing of Mountain Vista are consistent, steady, reliable all-star performers.

Guard Jana Van Gytenbeek of Cherry Creek heads the girls team with her ability to stand out in crunch time as she led the Bruins to the Class 5A state championship.

Freshman Raegan Beers of Valor Christian, Kasey Neubert of Highlands Ranch and Cali Clark of Cherry Creek provide inside scoring punch and rebounds. Beers was the top scorer in the CCM coverage area with an 18.9 average.

Ponderosa’s Liberty Line, Jamie Bain of Highlands Ranch and Arapahoe’s Eliana McClarie can score and lead whenever called upon.

Twin sisters have thrill of being on two state title teams

tate championships should never be taken for granted.

They are just too hard to attain.

Twin sisters Eliza and Nicole Hill, however, have been on two state championship teams in the last 12 months.

Eliza won the state’s No. 2 singles tennis championship for Cherry Creek last spring at the state tennis tournament. Nicole captured the No. 3 singles title and helped the Bruins win the state team title.

Then, last month the sisters were on the Bruins’ Class 5A state championship girls basketball team.

“It felt amazing, it was so different in basketball,” said Eliza. “For Creek, that was the first state basketball championship. It was such an amazing feeling and my teammates were incredible. For tennis, it was really exciting too, but we’ve been doing that for 35 years.”

According to Nicole, the team aspect of basketball is a big difference from tennis.

“Basketball was really, really fun,” she said. “It was more special to win it in basketball, because in tennis it was really special for me to win an individual title and a team title, but it is so much harder in basketball and there were so many good teams this year.

“Highlands Ranch, Grandview, Valor Christian and Regis were really strong. It was special because Cherry Creek has never won a girls state basketball title. In tennis we’ve Jim Benton won 35 state titles.

Just to make history in basketball was pretty special. I couldn’t stop smiling for two weeks after winning the basketball state championship.”

Eliza played in 22 games for the basketball team, averaging 1.5 points and 2.4 rebounds. Nicole suffered a concussion in practice and played in just 16 games while averaging 1.4 points and 1.6 rebounds.

Nicole hopes to be cleared to play tennis later this spring.

“I have to be honest with you,” said Nicole. “Eliza and I were very, very proud benchwarmers this season. I would say I am better at tennis than basketball but I really love both sports.

“Both are so different but each of them have such amazing qualities that helps the other. Like footwork in basketball helps me stay in shape for tennis and be able to handle all that. And the mental game in tennis

is super helpful for basketball.”

Eliza and Nicole, the 6-foot-1 sophomores, started playing tennis when they were young but it took some prodding to play organized basketball since the Hill family lived in Madrid, Spain for over a decade.

“My whole family are tennis players so I started playing ever since I could hold a racket,” explained Eliza. “We grew up in Spain. And in Spain it is a little bit different. Not many people are student athletes.

You are either going to become an athlete and go pro or maybe get a scholarship and go play Division I tennis in the U.S. or you are going to be a really good student.

“My parents didn’t want that.

They grew up in the U.S. and they wanted us to play sports as well as be athletes. There wasn’t a basketball team but Mom went around talking to every single girl and parent that we knew asking them if they would play basketball. We started a girls basketball team. That was in third grade and I’ve been playing ever since.”

And winning state titles in two sports.

Lending a hand deserves applause Hockey player who is big on assists honored for hard work on ice

It was late in the third period of the state semifinal game against eventual state champion Regis Jesuit when Alex Harlan set up Chaparral’s best scoring chance of the contest.

The Chaparral senior sent a pass to a teammate in the slot, which didn’t result in a goal in the 4-0 loss on March 1, but it showed the kind of player Harlan is — when assists to him are as important as the resulting goals.

Harlan is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Hockey Player of the Year.

He was one of the state leaders with 23 assists. He had 14 goals and tied with fellow senior Dylan Florit for the team lead with 37 points for the Wolverines. Harlan missed two games because of concussion protocol.

“A lot of times the talk is about the player who scored the goals and not the player who had the assists,” said Harlan. “But the

players know how important assists are.

“Yeah, sometimes I look to pass first. My dad keeps telling me to look for shots. I’m just glad I was able to play well this season.”

Harlan’s brother, Max, was an All-State goalie for Regis last season.

Alex Harlan has gone to Chap for four seasons and chose to play high school this season instead of AAA club hockey with the Thunderbirds. He noted it is more fun to play in front of a high school crowd than just parents at AAA games.

“He has extremely good vision on the ice as attested by his 23 assists,” said Wolverines coach Ryan Finnerock. “His biggest attribute is his speed and skill. He is right that sometimes assists are overlooked more than goals by some. However, we value them on our team as equal to goals.

“Alex did not play of Chaparral last season. He made the decision in his senior year to come back and play for his high school. He chose high school hockey because it has become more competitive than club AAA hockey and he said the level of hockey is equal to or greater in high school compared to AAA.”
