The event, which sold out in two months, drew 200 community members. Special guest Moana, a Polynesian Disney princess, visited with children while they snacked on treats and crafted. The enchanted morning featured music, storytime and photo ops.

My favorite type of cookie is the new S’mores. I’ve spent a lot of time selling cookies. I’ve sold over 700 boxes this season. We’ve sold at Colorado School of Mines and at a booth at Nordstrom Rack. Last weekend we sold in Keystone.

Cookie sales have taught me how to be confident around adults and talk to adults, and how to be OK when someone says no.

My bronze award My group did two different projects that relate to the same thing.

We hosted a school supplies drive for a low-income school in Greeley.

People even donated supplies for the teachers. We also hosted a book drive for the same school because

they don’t have a library.

I learned that it’s always good to help the community — and it feels really good. When we went to drop off the school supplies, everyone was smiling and having a great time. We received supplies from many schools in Highlands Ranch that opted to donate at the end of the school year.

My favorite part was sorting the supplies because I got to be with my friends. Afterward, we felt accomplished and like we did a good thing.

Fun fact I’ve done three musicals and more than 10 plays with my school.

My favorite one was Aladdin. I’m going on a Disney Cruise for my third time this spring break.

His comedy gives black-and-white conversation a new hue

C

omedian Sam Adams had just finished auditioning for a commercial the afternoon of Aug. 22, 2018, when he saw the text from a friend: “Dude, you are blowing up Facebook.”

A video showcasing a piece of his routine, which Dry Bar Comedy filmed in 2017, was catching fire.

Called “True Color,” it took a humorous look at race by pointing out we aren’t truly white or black, but rather shades of many colors. It had a million views and counting.

He drove to his Parker home, loosened his tie, sat on Ann Macari the couch, stared at his phone, watching Healey the number of views on his Facebook homepage climb.

He switched to his laptop, hitting the refresh button every five minutes: 1.4 million. 2 million. 3 million.

Messages poured in, from Germany, Switzerland, Vietnam, across the U.S. “I’m going to go the hardware store now — I bet I’m Paisley Pink.”

“We are Sahara Sands and Cashmere Pink.”

“We love this.”

Adams was stunned.

“Some people had already gone to the hardware store, sending me pictures of them holding up paint chips,” he remembers. “It was just mesmerizing.”

He stayed up until 4 in the morning, answering every message, saying “thank you, thank you,” posting smiley faces.

Eventually, the video surpassed 29 million views.

And Adams — whose true color, he will tell you, is not black — took a breath.

“I think people are tired of the divisiveness that comes with race,” he says, sitting in a Starbucks recounting the moment, still as awed by it seven months later as he was then.

“With race, I can’t solve it. I’m gonna try to make you laugh about it — maybe the humor makes you think about it differently.”

••••• In Harrison, Arkansas, a town of 13,000 people in the heart of the Ozark Mountains near the Missouri border, the “True Color” video popped onto Veda Remington’s Facebook feed.

She smiled as she watched, then promptly shared the video with friends — one of them Eric Stefanski, president of the Ozarks Arts Council who also books acts for the local theater.

“I feel like racism is something that people battle against or something they try to hold onto — it depends on which side of the coin they’re on,” says Remington, a mother of two young boys who has lived in Harrison all but a few of her 26 years. “That bit spoke to me in such a way — stop worrying about what you’re not, identify

Stefanski, 56, also a longtime Lutheran pastor, loved the routine, too, and thought Adams just might be a game-changer for the town.

“We have a reputation we have to live down,” says Stefanski, who moved to Harrison about 19 years ago with his wife and their two young daughters. But “for all the attempts people make to get rid of that reputation, really the only way to get rid of it is to have someone who understands the problem in the country and who is able to look at it with humor, is not afraid to address it and who can bring people together.”

So, on Aug. 23 at 10:17 p.m., Stefanksi emailed Adams’ agent with an invita-

tion to perform in Harrison’s Lyric Theater in the historic district of a town that has been called the most racist in America.

••••• In 2001, Adams, now 59, was a sports writer — he covered the Broncos and other sports teams for The Denver Post and the defunct Rocky Mountain News. He did stand-up comedy at night as a hobby. On Tuesdays, his day off because the Broncos had the day off, he would head to Cherry Creek mall, one of his “think-tank places” for comedy ideas.

On this day, he was standing on the second floor, peering over the railing at the children’s breakfast-themed play area below. Kids were playing on

the curvy strip of bacon, the fried egg, the waffle. He didn’t see the little boy, but his voice carried clearly through the air: “Look at all the pink people.”

The words struck Adams: “There’s a little kid who sees actual color. He’s looking at white people, but he’s not calling them white. He sees the true color.”

That night, he tried out a new routine.

“I don’t know why we say black and white — they’re the blandest colors on the color wheel,” he told the audience.

“This mic stand is black. I’m brown.

White people, you’re not white. Grab a napkin, put it on your hand. You’re pink. It had people laughing, no matter where I did it.”

With some polishing, he thought, that could be his signature bit.

It was in McCook, Nebraska, about six years later, that Adams — by then working full-time at comedy — nailed the home run.

He was wandering around in the small town’s Super Walmart, killing time before his show, when he saw the paint chips in the hardware area. He grabbed some brown ones, noticing the funny names.

“This really old man asks: ‘What are you doing?’ ” “I’m trying to find my true color.” “ ‘Well, you’re black.’ ” “No, I’m not. I’m Hoot Owl. Other shoppers in the area start gathering, thinking maybe I’m confronting him.

I say to the old man, ‘Let’s see what color you are.’ I grabbed some pink ones, put it up against his arm. You’re Papaya Smoothie. Now people are laughing — they see what’s happening.”

That night, the mic stand is black.

Adams is Hoot Owl. He pulls out the chip. The place erupts.

“Every time I went someplace, I went to Walmart, got some more paint chips. They didn’t all have the same ones. Caramel Nut is my favorite. Sumptuous Spice, this is my all-time favorite. Chocolate Indulgence. I have four that I like. I just like saying them.”

••••• Mike Raftery, Adams’ agent, forwarded him Stefanski’s email. “What are your thoughts on this?” he asked.

“I think Mike thought I would say ‘I don’t think so.’ ” But Adams took a long look at the offer. He researched the town, read the stories about its past — and its present.

from town. News photos show the driveway to his compound lined with Confederate and KKK flags. Harrison is the organization’s postal address, and white-pride billboards sometimes appear along roadways, news reports say.

The 2010 U.S. Census put the town’s population as 96 percent white and 0.3 percent black — who are generally students at the junior college or employees at the FedEx freight carrier company, Stefanski says.

The Community Task Force on Race Relations, founded in 2003, openly acknowledges on its mission statement the town’s ugly history and racial challenges, and emphasizes its commitment to promoting diversity and an inclusive environment. A victory: In 2016, the town won the Dream Keeper Award, given by the state’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission for noteworthy efforts to improve race relations, specifically among young people.

With some resident-organized peace rallies and town-sponsored diversity marches, as reported in local news accounts, Harrison is working toward rebranding its image.

But the past lingers. The reputation still makes African-Americans reluctant to live there, Stefanski says. And there are still people in the community who display prejudice and hate toward others different from them, Remington says. Her late grandmother was one.

But, she says, “The majority are not that way.”

She credits her father — whom she describes as a man with a heart open to all kinds of differences — for instilling in her the creed “that people are people, that women and men need to be respected equally, that color doesn’t define a person.”

“We have some really truly wonderful people that live here,” Remington says of the town she learned to love in recent years, when she started looking for the good.

In the end, the astonishing reaction that “True Color” had inspired in so many people around the world persuaded Adams to accept Stefanski’s invitation.

“Race stimulates conversation, positive and negative, like no other topic,” Adams says. “It’s really just a comedy bit, not intended to stoke political fires. But the people, in their comments, were finding a message they deemed positive in that conversation about race. For me it’s a funny-yettrue look at skin tones. Nothing more.

But if people believe the bit can be a positive in the conversation, then I will deliver it. To do it in place where the reputation is stained with racism, I wanted the challenge.”

••••• Adams knows racism. He heard it, saw it, felt it. He attended, he says, one of the most racist high schools in America in the 1960s and ‘70s in Cleveland. But his first experiences with discrimination started earlier.

“We would get off the city bus for

junior high school, walk down the street. It was eerily quiet, sun’s out, too silent. Then white kids would pop out from behind the trees, throwing rocks.”

During a drive to visit family in Georgia one July, a 9-year-old Adams and his family stopped at a restaurant.

They ordered waters and soda. A little boy in a nearby booth asked for a soda, too. His father said no. The boy noted Adams’ sister, then 3, had one, but referred to her by the N word. It was the first time Adams had felt the word directly aimed at him or his family. It made him feel small. He and his family walked out.

“I knew a lot of white kids were sort of hiding behind this thing that’s been passed down ... the cloak of racism” as he calls it. But “in class we would see how people really are. I was in band — the same kid who played trombone in the brass section, laughing and joking with me, was the same kid who would pop from behind the tree and throw rocks.”

And Adams thought: “ ‘I know who you really are — you’re the trombone player, you’re not the rock thrower.…

Eventually that’s how we worked it…

I’m just going to be me — when everybody started being themselves, things started getting better.”

He looks back on that time and wishes he’d displayed more leadership, more willingness to try to defuse situations, to find a way to connect.

Humor, he thinks, could have been a good tool.

••••• On Dec. 6, Adams flew into Little Rock, Arkansas, then drove to Fayetteville, about 75 miles from Harrison.

He wasn’t afraid. He was concerned, as he would tell his audience the next night.

He had prepared, trained, for months. “Like a boxer getting ready for a big fight. . . . I let myself believe I was going to fight racism.”

He studied the town’s everyday life to find ways to connect. He knew the high school football team was on a winning streak and congratulated it in promotional videos for the show. He found the diversity task force’s Facebook page and contacted it to gauge interest in his show. He knew about the town’s annual hot air balloon race.

He envisioned every possible scenario — from no one showing up to the performance to being the target of heckling or violence — and how he would respond.

As Adams left for the drive to Harrison, he made sure his gas tank was full. He bought plenty of water and snacks so he wouldn’t have to stop along the way.

In Harrison, he parked by the town gazebo. The night was cold, quiet.

Whatever happens, happens, Adams thought, as he got out of the car.

He looked up and saw the Lyric Theater across the street, its neon sign announcing: “Comedian Sam Adams Dec. 7 @7:00.”

He met Stefanski inside. They exchanged pleasantries, talked about how to introduce him. Make your announcements and I’ll just walk on, Adams said.

As he did, a loud roar swelled through the hall, where almost all 350 seats were filled. Adams’ knees slightly buckled. The cheering seemed to go on and on.

He hadn’t envisioned that scenario: “What if you go out there and they give you this great ovation? I didn’t know what it meant to them.”

Sitting in the audience for her first comedy show ever, Remington felt her heart fill.

“It just validated for me that the town is what I like to believe it is, and that we have people here that are supportive and find good humor, and they’re not what our reputation says we are. . . . Just to hear the entire place light up like that — it was incredible.”

Adams composed himself.

Stefanski finds it difficult to capture the moment in words. “It was a matter of him being honored and us being honored. It’s hard to describe apart from being there — it’s kind of one of these awesome moments.”

Time flew. Adams’ 45-minute show stretched into 90 minutes. He emptied his bag of fun. At the end, he invited people to shake his hand or have a picture taken with him for $5 — to raise money for the local food bank, which Adams had read was in need of donations.

There was the 13-year-old girl with the pink-and-white “I (heart) comedy” sweatshirt who wants to be a comedian.

And the woman who told Adams he would never know how much this meant to the town, because by showing up he had helped dissolve some of the reputation they were working so hard to erase.

“It was my pleasure to perform for them,” says Adams, who was deeply moved by the warm reception. “They were genuinely nice to me … I saw that they weren’t what the internet portrayed them to be.”

The crowd that night was mostly white, with a few Hispanic women, Remington says. But a cross-section of the town had shown up, Stefanski says — politicians, businesspeople, everyday residents, young and old.

And after the show, many lingered in conversation.

“I would have never seen them talking to one another,” Stefanski says.

“That dialogue is exactly the sort of thing we have to have going on here.

That’s where a lot of things are going to get repaired.”

••••• That his “True Color” bit has touched so many still amazes Adams.

At the end of the day, he says, his job is to make people laugh, not to make a political statement.

But, he reflects, we’re conditioned to see what’s different from the time we’re little. If you’re given three triangles and a circle, we’re always told to pick out the one that’s different, not the ones that are alike.

“Maybe,” he says, “if we stop seeing black and white, stop looking at color, we’ll get on to more important things.”

Adams, who is most likely returning to Harrison for a fall show this year, still has his original paint chips — Hoot Owl, Caramel Nut, Sumptuous Spice, Chocolate Indulgence. He also has the paint chip a woman in Harrison handed him that night. On it, she signed her name, circled the Peach Medley shade and wrote “We love you.

You are great!”

The paint chip sits on his desk, in the “me” room, alongside the trophies and photos with famous people — a reminder of an unforgettable night in which hundreds of true colors swirled into a tapestry of humanity at its joyful best.

Senate bill would address youth mental health needs Stronger system of care would result in cost savings, better outcomes, officials say

Kari Eckert lost her 15-year-old son, Robbie, to suicide five months ago.

The Lakewood High School student was an athlete, a leader, everyone’s friend, Eckert said. She saw no signs of struggle.

“Robbie struggled silently and he suffered alone,” said Eckert, sitting in a small room at the state Capitol on March 21, an hour before a bill aimed at curbing youth suicide would go to a Senate committee for debate.

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee unanimously agreed to send the bill to the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

Eckert was joined by parent Leslie Kobi, who spent eight years fighting for her son’s mental health, and Heidi Baskfield, vice president of Population Health and Advocacy at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Also in attendance at the intimate press conference were Sen. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, and Rep. Lois Landgraf, RColorado Springs, sponsors of Senate Bill 19-195.

The bipartisan bill addresses what public officials and health experts

call a youth mental health crisis. In Colorado, suicide is the leading cause of death for people ages 10-24, and one in six teens has a diagnosable mental health condition, Children’s Hospital reports.

Over the last decade, the hospital has seen a six-fold increase in admissions to its emergency departments and urgent care locations following a suicide attempt.

Fragmented services, a shortage of screenings and costly care are some of the barriers to adequate mental health care, experts and advocates in the field say.

“Our hospital continues to serve, in a way, as a warehouse for kids with complicated mental health needs because the system is not there to support them out in the community or in their own homes,” Baskfield said.

SB 19-195 — which is also sponsored

by Sen. Bob Gardner, R-Colorado Springs, and Rep. Tracy Kraft-Tharp, D-Arvada — aims to create that system.

The bill would create the Office of Children and Youth Behavioral Health Policy Coordination in the governor’s office, along with a commission and advisory council.

The commission would serve as a “behavioral health backbone” for the state, with representation from counties, the Legislature, multiple state departments, the state attorney general’s office and others. It would work to increase public awareness of youth behavioral needs and facilitate

The commission’s immediate actions would be to implement cost-effective “wraparound” services — which provide a continuum of care for young people with complex needs — develop standardized assessment and screening tools, and design an integrated funding pilot project, according to the bill.

For the 2019-20 fiscal year, the bill would increase state spending by at least $1.3 million, according to the bill’s fiscal note. Over time, legislators say the bill would save $25 million to $30 million by reducing the need

for extensive, costly mental health services, such as inpatient care and residential treatment services.

Although the bill has a long way to go before it reaches the governor’s office, backers are confident it will go through.

“I think this is one of, if not the most, important bill we are going to see this session when it comes to health,” Landgraf said. “You can’t put a price tag on any one of these kids.”

Eckert agreed, emphasizing the significance of screening and assessing children for mental health issues.

“If Robbie was asked those questions,” she said of her son, “maybe he would be here.”

Launching in April, the Pritikin program is based on the Pritikin lifestyle, focusing on healthy eating, regular exercise and a healthy mind-set. The Medicare-approved, evidence-based program is all about patient education, giving them a 72-session cardiac rehab program. Conventional cardiac rehab programs only offer patients up to 36 sessions.

Patients who have suffered from one of seven qualifying cardiovascular events, including heart attack, angioplasty and stents, bypass or valve surgery, angina/chest pain, or cardiac transplant, can be enrolled at South Denver Cardiology in the Pritikin ICR program.

Randy Cupps, business development manager with South Denver Cardiology Associates (SDCA), said they are glad to be offering the Pritikin program because it fits with the SDCA vision of offering a comprehensive approach to cardiac care.

“The patients do not need to figure it out on their own,” Cupps said. “Patients will receive the

guidance from experts in the fields of exercise, medicine, nutrition and mental health in a structured education setting along with medically-supervised exercise. The patients will learn the skills and tools to apply to their everyday routine to reduce the risk of heart disease as well as many other chronic diseases such as diabetes.”

Cindy Berner, the senior director of nutrition and training for Pritikin ICR LLC, said it’s South Denver’ Cardiology’s commitment to helping patients live longer, happier lives that makes them perfect for the program.

The Pritikin program was developed through the efforts of Nathan Pritikin. In the 1970s, Nathan Pritikin, an inventor with a passion for nutrition and fitness, began testing his then-revolutionary theory that heart disease could be treated with lifestyle changes. He believed that diet and exercise, not drugs and surgery, should be the first line of

defense against cardiovascular disease.

Numerous studies have documented the Pritikin program’s ability to lower blood cholesterol levels, improve blood pressure and blood sugar control and reduce other lifestyle-related risk factors.

Sessions at South Denver Cardiology will offer a mix of exercise, individual education and group workshops facilitated by South Denver Cardiology’s exercise physiologists, RNs, and registered dieticians, including expanded heart- healthy cooking classes and instruction on healthy food shopping and meal planning. program is custom-designed to fit each individual’s needs with personal counseling to reinforce lecture sessions, provide coaching and track progress.

Berner said patients entering the Pritikin program aren’t just given some reading materials and basic information. Instead, they become part of a comprehensive care program developed by a multi-disciplinary team. In Pritikin, patients just aren’t given a list of healthy foods to eat. They are taught how to read labels, go grocery shopping, and how to incorporate ingredients into healthy, good-tasting meals.

“It’s really about helping patients understand barriers and how to overcome them and succeed,” Berner said.

With about 31 Pritikin programs operating nationwide, Berner said the success stories they hear can be remarkable.

“We had a patient in Arkansas who entered the program just wanting to go into a grocery store without needing a walker or electric cart,” Berner said. “After the program, she was doing way more and her qualify of life increased.

Incumbents re-elected to HRCA Board of Directors Three candidates vied for two open seats

Two incumbents will continue to serve on the Highlands Ranch Community Association Board of Directors.

Residents have re-elected Jim Allen, the owner of a consulting firm, and selfemployed engineer Brock Norris. They will each serve two-year terms.

At a March 19 meeting at Eastridge Recreation Norris Center, delegates — representatives of neighborhoods in Highlands Ranch — presented the ballots to HRCA staff for counting.

Allen and Norris competed against Realtor Dan DeBacco for two seats on the five-person board. Allen received 19,830 votes.

Allen Norris came in at 21,511 votes and DeBacco at 6,031 votes.

The board of directors serves as the HRCA’s governing entity, setting policy on funding, public services, the Backcountry Wilderness Area, recreation

centers and more.

Each year, directors identify strategic objectives to help fulfill HRCA’s mission of “enhancing property values and creating quality of life through recreation, community events, and leadership.”

Allen will serve as secretary of the board and Norris as vice president.

They join Melissa Park, also vice president, Krystal Woodbury, director of finance, and Scott Lemmon, president.

Since moving to Highlands Ranch in 2009, Allen has served the HRCA as a delegate, Development Review Committee member and director. In his candidate Q&A, Allen listed his main priorities as increasing awareness of the Backcountry recreation area and planning for improvements to HRCA’s recreation centers.

Norris has served the HRCA for 14 years as a delegate and director. In his fifth term as director, he plans to focus on long-range planning and the reinvestment of funds once the HRCA’s bonds are paid off in 2024.

“I think we are in a good place of quietness,” Norris said at the March 19 meeting. “We have got to start thinking of the future.”

Lemmon expressed a similar outlook.

“It’s not too early,” he said. “We need to figure out what the future looks like at this organization.”

Athlete shines in state Special Olympics John Olson excels in cross-country skiing

John Olson has climbed 31 of Colorado’s 14ers and tackled technical rock climbs across the country. He spends most of his winter weekends in the mountains skiing.

Olson is also diagnosed with autism and medication-resistant epilepsy.

Thanks to great mentors and medical

treatment, his disabilities don’t get in the way of his pursuits. On March 2 and 3, Olson won three gold medals in cross-country skiing at the Special Olympics State Winter Games at Copper Mountain.

“I’m an overcomer,” Olson, 31, said, sitting in a Highlands Ranch coffee shop next to his father. “I can finish anything.”

Olson, a graduate of Cherokee Trail High School in Aurora, started cross-country skiing two years ago.

He didn’t know anyone who participated in the sport but had seen Special Olympics competitions at Copper. He

decided to try a practice and fell in love.

“It makes me be a better person,” Olson said, adding that he feels relaxed on the mountain.

Through the sport, Olson has not only developed strong relationships with his coaches, but also with individuals with similar or more challenging disabilities, his father, Tom Olson, explained. His teammates support and understand one another.

“It’s an outlet for a lot of kids,” Tom Olson said. “They are happy.”

Leading up to the state winter games, Olson practiced twice a week in the mountains and trained with the Cherry Creek Nordic team.

When he’s not skiing, Olson leads a campaign called Colorado Climb for Epilepsy Awareness. He hikes for or with young children with epilepsy.

Part of what allows Olson to ski, hike and climb is LivaNova’s Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) therapy system. After unsuccessful brain surgery to treat his epilepsy, Olson visited an epileptologist at UCHealth, who recommended the therapy.

A small, disk-shaped device, surgically placed in his chest, sends mild pulses through the vagus nerve to areas of the brain that are associated with seizures, according to LivaNova, a medical device company. The device is said to decrease the number and severity of seizures.

Prior to the VNS therapy system, he was having four to five seizures a month. Now he has one about every six weeks.

“For his activities, it’s really helped,” Tom Olson said. “It helps control seizures — it builds confidence.”

Olson’s next goal: compete in the 2021 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Sweden.

Weighing homeownership vs. renting, and the effect on kids Douglas County Parenting Coalition to host public discussion

In the Denver metro area, homeownership is not attainable for many families. Market pressures have led to more rental housing development, and as a result, more families are turning to renting, says Tobey Stein, executive chairman of the Douglas County Parenting Coalition.

That’s why on April 5, the Douglas County Parenting Coalition, with the backing of Red Rocks Credit Union, will host a meeting of local governments, housing industry professionals, law enforcement, residents and more.

The plan is to have a public conversation about homeownership’s effect on children’s academic performance and how benefits to homeownership can be recreated for renting families. Attendees need an invitation, but anyone can request one by contacting dcparenting@usa.com.

“We’ve been trying to do this for

years now,” Stein said, thanking the credit union for providing funds needed to host the event this year.

Stein said differences between homeownership and renting vary.

Renters are more likely to move often, she said, and possibly transfer schools or districts, creating gaps in a child’s education if curriculums don’t align.

Other examples apply to a child’s at-home life. Homeowners may have a spacious backyard for their children to spend time outdoors, or, neighborhood groups that help provide children a sense of community.

At the event, there will be a speaker who addresses helping children get access to open space and recreational activities if it’s not provided through their rental housing. There will also be a speaker who will guide attendees through addressing myths about renters and how to mitigate those misconceptions.

The coalition plans to take feedback from the meeting and create a booklet of information to guide residents and communities through creating benefits typically associated with homeownership for renters.

“Rental housing is a new reality,” Stein said. “A lot of people can’t come up with $50,000 down.”

Highlands Ranch teen named Carson Scholar STAFF REPORT

A teen in Highlands Ranch has been named a 2019 Carson Scholar, a national award that recognizes the academic excellence, humanitarianism and community service of students in grades 4-11, according to a news release.

Cameron Connor, an eighth-grade student at Aspen Academy in Greenwood Village, was nominated by teachers and administrators. He Connor has been on the honor roll for five years and is a member of the National Elementary and National Junior honor societies.

According to his nominators, integrity, hard work and conviction in Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits has brought him consistent academic success and growth, securing his chief cultural officer role for Bears Student Enterprises, a student-run small business that includes seven divisions and operated by Aspen’s seventh- and eighth-graders, the release said.

Earlier this school year, Connor participated in The World Peace Game, a semester-long class providing hands-on political simulation where students explore connectedness of the global community through the lens of

economic, social, and environmental crises.

Peer nomination earned Connor the Human Rights Award for his impact as president of the World Bank and diplomacy with other organizations to create a safer world, the release said.

Carson Scholars Fund rewards students who have not only a theoretical desire to positively affect change, but those who “walk the walk.”

Connor first embraced community service in preschool, during a lull between several major surgeries at Children’s Hospital Colorado, the release said. Two years earlier, prior to undergoing open heart surgery for multiple congenital heart defects, oxygen inefficiency had reduced Connor’s physical and verbal abilities dramatically.

“I couldn’t tell my parents if something was wrong. In fact, I hadn’t realized my experiences were unusual,” he said in the release. “But I knew it was hard. Hard to do rigorous things like running, but also just to breathe.

After my heart surgery, my body finally caught up with what I always knew I could do.”

Connor will receive a $1,000 college scholarship, with eligibility for successive annual recognition based on the scholars’ continued demonstration of academic pursuits and community service.

The men’s college basketball season began last November and it will end in April at the intimate U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The stadium has a capacity of 66,655. It’s where the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Gophers play their home football games.

The stadium opened in 2016.

Despite requests for a “bird-friendly” exterior design by the Audubon Society and others, the stadium’s designers used highly reflective glass for “aesthetic reasons.”

The stadium is in the Mississippi Flyway route, and resulting bird deaths are double any other building in Minneapolis.

The women’s college basketball

season will end in April as well, at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

The arena opened in 1996 (as the Ice Palace), and seats 20,500 for basketball, and it is a much more sensible choice.

Some fans at the U.S. Bank Stadium will be so far away from the action that they won’t know who won until they get home that night.

I have attended regional and Sweet Sixteen games in the past, and even a Final Four, when the Final Four games were played in basketball-dedicated facilities.

But when someone figured out how much money could be made, the finals were moved to these behemoths.

At its best, basketball is a wonderful and very simple game. It even can

What is unique is the easy access and prevalence of guns in our society by individuals who may have mental health challenges, some to the extent of posing danger to themselves and/ or others.

There is always some local talent in the tournament games. I think most of us remember where Chauncey Billups went to high school. If not, the answer is at the end. Billups could have gone anywhere he wanted to, and played with a more already-successful program.

Instead, he went just up the road to the University of Colorado, and made a lot of Buffalos fans happy.

Highlands Ranch High School’s girls teams have provided starters for Connecticut and Notre Dame. And then there was Abigail Nellie “Abby” Waner, who attended ThunderRidge, and wound up at Duke.

It seems more and more each day we live in such a way that we want to maintain a privacy around our faith and beliefs, protect them for ourselves.

It seems like we would rather not share with others how our faith and hope helped us through some of the darkest days and times in our lives.

We would rather not acknowledge or give credit to our faith and hope when good things happen in our lives or as we meet with happiness and success.

My experience and belief tell me that when we do have the courage and conviction to share our faith and hope openly, it moves from being the hardest part to the easiest part of having the faith, keeping the faith, and sharing the faith philosophy.

Michael Steven Cimbura

JUNE 24, 1965 – MARCH 18, 2019

Monday, March 18, 2019, Michael Steven Cimbura, husband, father, son, brother and friend finished his battle with ALS and slipped away peacefully into the arms of his beloved Savior. His family is heartbroken at his loss but remain firm in their belief that they will see him again on the other side of this broken world.

Mike will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend Nicole (Broken Leg) Cimbura, their three adored children Seide, Aiden and Ellie, his parents John and Dottie Cimbura, his sister Angela Tucker, and his brother John Cimbura Jr. (Amy). Mike will also be forever remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends.

Mike was an incredible husband and dad who loved his family and friends with an unmatched passion. He lived his life on his terms, always pushed boundaries, was a loyal friend, and lived life in the moment and to the fullest, while he radiated an irrepressible positive energy to all who knew him. He was a rare combination of someone who had both a love of life and a firm understanding of what was important—the simplicity of living life with those that you love.

Mike was born on June 24, 1965 in Denver, Colorado. He spent his childhood in a multitude of states until his family settled in California where he met the love of his life, Nicole.

After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a Bachelor of Science in Economics, he returned to Colorado to enjoy a season of snowboarding in Steamboat.

He then moved back to California to marry Nicole and they began their life together back here in Denver. As with everything he set his mind to, Mike successfully established a career in business consulting.

Mike’s family always came first. He enjoyed adventures with Nicole, their children, his family and friends. He cherished date nights, game nights, playing cards, Rock Band, and drumming. He loved riding his motorcycle much to his wife’s chagrin. He loved being a barn dad, a grill master, a Science Olympiad coach and gearhead.

He appreciated the Colorado outdoors and watching the Broncos.

Mike also relished the local music scene. He volunteered at church, his kid’s school and in the community in numerous areas of need.

With Nicole’s prodding, they jumped ship on the never-ending house-remodeling project that was their first home together.

They then moved to their beautiful new home on “the Lane”, where Mike met some of his dearest friends. Nicole and Mike began a family with the arrival of Seide (1997), followed by Aiden (2000) and finally Ellie (2002), and discovered a love like never before. Mike’s love for his three precious children was unbounded, and by far, he considered them to be his most cherished blessings and greatest accomplishment. Mike continued pursuing his other passions in life, but his favorite pastime became spending time with his kids. Mike was their number one cheerleader in all that they did, and Mike’s love and legacy live on in them.

As an extreme athlete, Mike was an accomplished cyclist, avid snowboarder, runner, and all-around thrill seeker. Mike gave ALS a ferocious fight with every ounce of his being. He and Nicole worked with the medical industry on trials, experimental therapies and advocacy. Together, with the support of family and many friends, they tirelessly fought for legislative reform to help terminal illness sufferers have better access to promising new treatments. They fought for themselves and others so that one day ALS will no longer be a hopeless diagnosis. In his honor, the fight will continue.

A memorial service celebrating Mike’s life will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 28, at Cherry Hills Community Church (Dixon Chapel) located at 3900 Grace Boulevard, Highlands Ranch.

hen Jenn Ray’s son Dylan was 2, he started showing signs of sensory processing disorder and autism.

“His brain struggles to filter out all the sounds of life that you or I can filter out without a second thought — the dryer going in the background or a drippy faucet,” Ray said. “I didn’t always know how to help him find his peace.”

But soon she discovered a miracle: hiking.

“It was the first time I noticed he slowed down,” Ray, of Littleton, said.

“He wanted to take in every single aspect of the trail: bugs, plants, flowers, weeds, sticks and rocks.”

These days, Ray and Dylan, now 6, go hiking every chance they get, and are branching out into far-flung destinations: Moab, Fruita and the Great Sand Dunes among them.

“This time in nature has really changed the lives of my son and me, and it’s where some of our best memories have been made,” Ray said.

More creative, less aggressive Dylan’s peace in the wilderness is no fluke, said Rosemary Dempsey, the communications director for Great Outdoors Colorado, or GOCO, an organization that uses state lottery proceeds to preserve and enhance Colorado’s outdoors.

Getting kids outdoors pays big dividends, Dempsey said.

“We know that playing outside is important for many facets of a child’s development,” Dempsey said. “There’s an increasing body of research showing that kids who play outside are more creative, less aggressive, less stressed, and even show fewer ADHD symptoms.”

One of GOCO’s signature campaigns is Generation Wild, which encourages parents to get kids outside.

“On average, we’re finding that many kids get maybe four to seven minutes of unstructured outdoor play time a day,” Dempsey said.

“That’s compared to hours of screen time. Doctors are starting to literally prescribe outdoor play for kids.”

Parents don’t need to light out for the territory to connect kid with nature, Dempsey said.

“We can experience the benefits of getting outside just out the back door,” Dempsey said. “It doesn’t have to be a daunting experience.”

Part of the struggle is overcoming stigmas that come with modern parenting, Dempsey said.

Getting dirty For some parents, instilling a love of nature and fostering independence go hand-in-hand.

“Letting kids outside, they learn their limits,” said Rebekah Eddy, a mom of two from Parker. “They’re able to understand what they’re capable of and what they’re not.”

One of the Eddy family’s favorite hikes is Maxwell Falls, west of Denver off Highway 285. Daughter Ella, 3, sometimes runs ahead of the pack — and Eddy lets her go.

“She’ll turn around when she feels too far away,” Eddy said. “Instinctually, kids need to develop their own sense of danger. They’ll either do it when they’re kids or when they’re adults.”

Eddy grew up in Montana, and her husband Jason grew up in Alaska, so sometimes the suburban landscape of Parker can feel a bit blah.

“As kids, we’d run all over the place with zero supervision, so when we went house shopping, it was bizarre

Eddy is happy to let her kids get muddy.

“The natural world is generally safer than the constructs we put up that we think are safe,” Eddy said. “We’re increasingly in a sterile environment, and it affects immune systems. Synching your system to the natural microbes in the world is an answer that’s right in front of us.”

Learning to deal with discomfort is crucial, Eddy said.

“I tell my kids: it’s OK if you’re cold,” Eddy said. “Our generation, for some reason, wants so badly to take away all levels of discomfort.”

Eddy’s methods are paying off, she said.

“Nolan can’t even say `mama’ yet, but he can ask: `outside?’ ” Out there For parents who are ready to venture beyond the backyard with their kids, tempering expectations is important, said Rebecca Ferrell, a spokesperson with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Parents worry kids raised in a world of high-octane entertainment will get bored on a trail, Ferrell said, but Denver is surrounded by top-notch state parks and open space parks that offer ways to keep them interested.

“Are they into dino fossils? Wildflowers? Birds? Try to connect the hike with things from their favorite movies or shows, for instance,” Ferrell said.

For Jenn Ray and her son Dylan, trail time will always be family time.

“Some of our most meaningful conversations have happened on the trail,” Ray said. “That time is just priceless.”

‘Beehive’ is all about the music Lone Tree Arts Center show explores sounds of days gone by

About choreography for “Beehive”: Brown says most songs feature a singer and backup. There’s little choreography on each. Most dance moves as a group.

“We’re not trying to create but to honor the music — all songs of women. We’re not trying to send a message … not trying to tell you how this relates to you … Don’t look for anything deep!”

Redevelopment envisioned for shopping center Streets at SouthGlenn may add more apartments, offices, entertainment

The tide of big-box redevelopment has hit The Streets at SouthGlenn, where a recently closed Sears and a Macy’s whose days may be numbered are likely to be redeveloped in the coming years.

A crowd of more than 100 came to a March 19 meeting inside that empty Sears, where some residents voiced concerns about traffic in the nearby neighborhood and a need for affordable housing in the area. Developers and City of Centennial staff shared information and answered questions at that open house-style meeting.

“With dramatic changes happening in the retail industry due to changing consumer preferences, traditional retail centers throughout Centennial and the United States need to start looking at non-traditional retail uses like entertainment-based retail and non-retail uses to reinvigorate the centers,” said Neil Marciniak, Centennial’s economic development manager, in an email.

Here’s a look at what could change at SouthGlenn, located at South University Boulevard and East Arapahoe Road, as plans move forward.

Alberta wants to put apartments and office space, and possibly retail and entertainment — think something like Lucky Strike Bowling — where Macy’s stands, within a few years.

Demand doesn’t appear to be sufficient for a hotel at SouthGlenn, said Donald Provost, founding principal with Alberta. Northwood doesn’t have plans for adding a hotel at the moment, Whitaker said.

On both the Sears and Macy’s land, 800 apartment units could be possible on each property, but Alberta is aim-

ing for about 400. It’s hard to say how close to 800 the number would be for Northwood, Whitaker said. Its plan is for five stories, based on the market, he added.

The units Alberta adds would be 10 percent to 20 percent higher in price than the current apartments at SouthGlenn, where a one-bedroom’s lowest price range is $1,465 to around $2,300.

A possible green area with a fountain could also be added to the Macy’s land, Provost said.

Next time you hit the gym, you could leave with a painting from your local art scene.

As part of South Suburban Parks and Recreation’s ongoing art displays at recreation centers, pieces from the Paint Box Guild — a Littleton-based group of artists that goes back decades — are hanging, for sale, at Goodson Recreation Center in Centennial.

“We’ve been an organization since 1973, but still, a lot of people don’t know about us,” said Fredia Cox, the guild’s president. “So we try to exhibit anywhere there’s wall space.”

The not-for-profit group includes 40 active members, and the art on Goodson’s walls included many watercolor, oil and oil pastel, and other types of pieces that ranged from as the $300s to as low as $35.

Paint Box Guild supports beginner artists, but it also provides the chance to rub elbows with longtime members of the local art scene, like Cox, who has been with the guild since 1988.

Other members, like 76-year-old Paul Savageau, got back into art after holding a passion for it earlier in

“I slowly got back into art through the Art Students League of Denver,” said Savageau, a Centennial resident.

There’s “representation for artists in the Paint Box Guild … there’s a lot of talent here on the walls.”

The guild meets at 10 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the First Presbyterian Church of Littleton at South Windermere Street and West

Littleton Boulevard. Those meetings run from September to May. “We have workshops once a month with excellent artists,” said Suzanne Maxwell, 77, of Denver, a guild member.

Goodson Recreation Center sits at 6315 S. University Blvd., and the exhibit runs through March 31. You can also see the guild’s work at an exhibit from April 7-May 13 at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 9203 S. University Blvd., Highlands Ranch.

Tips for spring and summer gardening

t’s that time of year, where our hemisphere comes to life, and that means your gardens are ready for some sprucing up, observation, and finally, Take a walk around the yard It’s been months since time has been spent in the garden so it’s important to walk around and observe changes. Maybe the perennials you planted in the fall didn’t make it. This will help you stay ahead of any bare spots or unwanted aesthetics as you prepare to grow.

New plants Colorado has a unique climate, sometimes making it difficult to know when to plant.

Landscaping plants should go in late spring or fall, while edible gardening plants can go in various times of the year from March to September.

Sometimes the weather moves these schedules around.

Prune By removing dead and old plant matter your plants can thrive. Be sure your pruning at proper lengths and times, as each plant is different. A quick google search or email to Rooney Bloom can make all the difference in the life of your plants.

Compost area After trimming and raking, you’ll have organic matter that can be a great addition to other parts of your garden. Most counties offer a composting service, however if not, start one in your backyard! Just remember brown (dead organic matter such as sticks), greens (apple cores, leftover lettuce, grass trimmings) and water!

Never use pesticides These kill and gravely harm creatures/pets, people and our environment. There are a plethora of other ways to address invasive species and unwanted creatures into your garden. Try industrial strength white vinegar for weeds, or planting African marigolds to keep bindweed away! Speaking of...did you know Lavender repels fleas?

Organic mulch Mulch assists in suppressing weeds, retaining moisture, and improves soil fertility as it decomposes. Using mulch to top off your veggie garden or flower beds helps, especially in Colorado’s arid climate. BE SURE the mulch your purchasing is organic and hasn’t been treated with dyes.

CDOT campaign works to curb marijuana-impaired driving STAFF REPORT

The Colorado Department of Transportation is launching the second phase of its marijuana traffic safety campaign, The Cannabis Conversation.

Introduced in 2018, The Cannabis Conversation is an interactive campaign that invites the public, cannabis users and non-users, law enforcement, local government and the marijuana industry to participate in dialogue aimed at identifying creative solutions to the complex problem of marijuana and driving, according to a CDOT news release.

Marijuana-impaired driving continues to be a problem on Colorado roads, according to the release. From 2017 to 2018, the Colorado State Patrol noted a 25 percent increase in marijuana DUI citations, the release said, and more than 20 percent of all DUI citations in 2018 involved marijuana.

As CDOT kicks off the next phase of The Cannabis Conversation, the agency is releasing new results collected from last year’s public outreach efforts.

Last year, CDOT gathered feedback from more than 15,000 Coloradans who participated in the campaign by completing an online survey, attending public meetings and/or sharing their thoughts about marijuana and driving

during in-person interviews.

According to the release, some key insights from this outreach included: * The more often people consumed cannabis, the less dangerous they considered driving under the influence of marijuana to be. * Most daily users reported driving under the influence of cannabis. * Many users have normalized driving high, but most still consider whether they are impaired before driving. Their top considerations are travel conditions, feeling alert enough and how recently they consumed cannabis. * Most users are critical of laws, policies and enforcement about driving under the influence of cannabis.

This year, the focus of the Cannabis Conversation will be creating a traffic safety PSA ad campaign warning about the dangers.

In the coming months, CDOT will host opportunities across the state for the public to get involved in identifying solutions, as well as helping CDOT design an education campaign on the issue.

Opportunities will include public meetings and events, stakeholder workshops, online surveys and digital focus groups.

It “is now a successful lifestyle center with main street elements that make it one of the top retail and entertainment destinations in Centennial,” he added.

SouthGlenn’s outdoor shopping center layout replaced the former mall in 2009.

The Macy’s building was constructed in 1981, according to Arapahoe County assessor’s records. Macy’s West Stores Inc. sold it to Alberta in February 2018 for $10 million, records show.

Timeline The Macy’s isn’t likely to close in the immediate future, but developers have to think about the possibility, Provost said.

“I’d be surprised if it was here in five years,” Provost said.

Sears closed near the end of last year.

Whether the plans go through is still up to the city’s determination of whether they meet the requirements of the city’s Land Development Code, which sets zoning districts and design standards.

After some preliminary talks, city staff and developers met with a group of 14 representatives from homeowners associations in the area to talk about opportunities and constraints associated with possible redevelopment March 5. On March 18, staff updated the city council and the Planning and Zoning Commission — citizens who make development recommendations to council — about the plans. The March 19 community meeting at Sears will be followed by a second meeting likely in late April.

After that, Planning and Zoning will hold a public hearing and decides whether the plans meet the city’s code. If approved, the plan moves to a city council

Painting ‘from the inside out’ Local artist finds inspiration after serious head injury

James Holmes admits he never used to be able to “connect” with abstract art.

The 56-year-old Parker man said he never appreciated the art form.

Abstract concepts, to him, a 17-year board member of the Denver Art Museum, never existed in his mind.

Holmes is the CEO and executive director of the Cherokee Ranch and Castle Foundation in Sedalia and has a passion for riding horses. Standing in the Deep Space Lounge in downtown Parker March 19, Holmes said he never would have guessed he would be here, talking about how he became an abstract artist and about his pieces hanging on the wall for his first art show.

“I could never really think abstractly before,” Holmes said. “It wasn’t the way I was wired.”

In February 2018, Holmes broke his neck after being bucked from a horse on a day trip to Cherry Creek State Park. He also sustained a closed head injury, when a blow to the head causes the brain to knock against the skull.

He received emergency surgery and

Holmes came out of the procedure with little pain and few complications. But his neck was stiff, his head felt fuzzy and he couldn’t ride horses for most of the following spring and summer.

Holmes’ wife, Wendy, said that was the beginning of him discovering his new passion.

“He’s always been a very active person and, at times, in high-risk sports,” said Wendy Holmes, who works as the director of communications and public affairs for Douglas County. “For him to be in a position where he could not be with his horses, could not be active for so long — I told him that I thought it might be good for him if he couldn’t ride his horses, maybe he should paint them.”

James Holmes describes one of his earliest paintings and how the imagery from the piece came to him.

‘Miracle of the accident’ Patients who sustain closed head injuries often experience some kind of personality change, according to the Mayo Clinic. Most eventually revert back to their old selves, while others don’t ever quite come back.

Holmes said since his injury some of his personality has changed. He can’t improvise on guitar like he used to. His brain felt “foggy” during much of his recovery and does, on occasion, still today.

And, somehow, he found a talent for abstract painting.

As a child, he enjoyed drawing and painting certain objects, but hadn’t created much art since then. After the accident, he found peace in creating abstract art, where shape and form are simplified.

“All of this stuff is a miracle of the accident,” Holmes said. “Hopefully, the gateway is open and now I’m feeding it enough to where it will become part of my normal `artistic diet.’ ” In most of his paintings, Holmes finds people. They don’t usually appear to him at first. The figures only appear hours later, when Holmes “meets the painting in the morning.”

In one painting he sees a woman’s face. Another shows an angel almost hidden, surrounded by blue and white paint. It’s unintentional, Holmes said.

Holmes has found his subconscious come to life through his work.

“Something occurred after his accident where it was like a muse came to visit him,” said Stephanie Hill Newton, a friend and fellow artist. “When a muse comes to see us, we have a choice to grab on and follow that muse where it wants to take us, or choose to let it pass us by. He chose to grab his muse and hasn’t let that muse go.”

A change of pace Almost every piece hanging in the Deep Space Lounge marks a point in Holmes’ newfound appreciation of life. He takes things more slowly. He tries to live in the moment.

Karla Raines has been Holmes’ friend since 2002. She began painting in 2012 and said Holmes’ work as an artist has been nearly the opposite of who he has been his entire life — a man interested in fast-paced, highenergy action.

“James’ work has a serenity to it, and there’s almost an additional, emotional, visual component to it that is a direct connection to who he is spiritually and how he’s connected to his emotions,” Raines said.

“I think what I’ve seen with James is immense continuity in terms of character of the person and his deep passion for the things that capture him.”

Fitness studio offers new workout Row House will have instructor-led rowing classes

Highlands Ranch is getting another boutique workout studio — with a new concept.

Row House, a class-based rowing studio, opens its doors April 11 at 9358 Dorchester St., Suite 104, on the southeast end of Town Center.

The franchise is the first in Colorado and one of three planned for the south metro Denver area. Other locations are expected to open in the next year or two in Lone Tree and Parker.

Its head company, Xponential Fit-

ness, is behind popular brands like CycleBar and Club Pilates.

Denver resident Anne Johnson is the franchise owner and area developer. Originally from St. Louis, she left corporate America in January 2018 to start her own business.

She comes from a family of entrepreneurs, she said. She considered home health care but loved the boutique studio concept.

“I’ve always been into fitness,” Johnson said at the studio’s soft opening on March 21. “I knew that I wanted to find something that was new, that sent a good message and was inclusive.”

Performed in a dark room with 24 rowing machines, the 45-minute classes offer a full body workout.

According to Johnson, legs do 60 percent of the work on the machine.

alor Christian senior Anna Hall can do almost everything as a track and field athlete.

She recently set a national high school record for the pentathlon but that event doesn’t exist in Colorado high school meets.

Valor coach Brian Kula would like to enter Hall in 10 events each high school meet this spring but is limited to four.

On Feb. 22 at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Indoor Championships, Hall set a national high school girls pentathlon record with 4,302 points.

Hall, who transferred to Valor from Arapahoe after her freshman season, has won two consecutive state Class 4A 100- and 300-meter titles and holds the state record in the 300 hurdles. She also captured the state long jump crown last season and will face the challenge of competing against 5A athletes this year since Valor has moved up into the 5A ranks.

“I grew up doing track but did everything else too like soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, basketball and volleyball,” said Hall, who has signed to compete next season at the University of Georgia. “Once I got to high school a lot of my club teams said you have to pick, and track was just kind of where my heart was at.”

COACH’S TAKE: ‘She is one of the best multi-event athletes in the world at her age and has had a lot of success breaking a few national records in a year’s time. But probably better than all those things, she is a great kid, high-character kid and works real hard.’

Q&A with Hall Who is your favorite athlete (past, present, pro or college) and why?

Kendell Williams. She went to Georgia. She won seven NCAA titles in the pentathlon and heptathlon while she was there and went to the Olympics.

I got to meet her a couple times and compete with her. It is just the way she carries herself, goes about the sport so humbly and is such a nice person yet has accomplished so much.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

I don’t know if it is a who or a what. A lot of it is my faith and it is God based. Knowing He did give me talent in specific events so I kind of have a fear of not reaching my full potential.

What would be a perfect performance in a track meet?

If I PR in every event I was in that would be a perfect meet. And hopefully if you PR you score points for the team so lots of PRs is lots of points.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Math. I’ve always liked numbers and solving problems.

How do you feel you will compete against 5A athletes this season?

I was at Arapahoe my freshman year and they are in 5A. So I am excited to get back to 5A because I don’t know if it is more competitive or hyped up or has more going around it.

ennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest won the 2018 women’s NCAA golf championship and then soared to No. 1 in the women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), which she has held for 23 weeks dating back to last July.

And this is a golfer who developed her game in Colorado, where it is often OVERTIME difficult to keep all the basics of a competitive golf swing tuned during the winter because of elements like sub-freezing temperatures, snow, slush and ice.

“Yeah, it was Jim Benton a little difficult,” said Kupcho, who won two Class 4A girls state high school individual championships while playing for Jefferson Academy in Westminster.

“I guess it was kind of good for me just because it is cold in the winter, so I played basketball pretty much my whole life. I played that during the winter and it kind of gave me a little time away from golf.

“I haven’t got burned out and that’s the main mistake with juniors nowadays. They just get burned out and don’t want to play later.”

Kupcho will be honored for her stellar 2018 accomplishments by the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame as the Amateur Athlete of the Year at its annual awards dinner on April 3 at the Hilton Denver City Center.

“Both my parents (Mike and Janet) play golf and I have an older brother (Steven) that started playing. It sort of became a family thing. My brother and I both loved it and we became pretty competitive. That’s how it all started.”

Last season she was a first team Women’s Golf Coaches Association All American, broke her own Wake Forest record with a 70.60 scoring average and became the first wireto-wire NCAA champion since 2002. Kupcho was also a member of the victorious United States Curtis Cup and Palmer Cup teams.

Cohlton Schultz ends amazing preps career Ponderosa student named South Metro Wrestler of Year

During his senior season at Ponderosa High School, Cohlton Schultz didn’t leave behind any doubts that he is one of the best-ever Colorado high school wrestlers.

Schultz won his fourth consecutive state championship at the CHSAA State Championships Feb. 14-16 when he pinned Legend’s Colin Lavell in 52 seconds in the title match.

He became the 24th wrestler to win four state titles. Schultz won two at 220 pounds and the last two in the 285-pound weight class.

Schultz amazingly never lost a point all season, had a 46-0 record and finished four years of wrestling at Ponderosa with a 188-2 record. In his four state tournament title conquests, he won 15 of 16 matches by pins.

He is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Wrestler of the Year.

Tim Yount is a guru of high school wrestling in Colorado and publishes the On The Mat rankings each season.

He claims Schultz is one of the state’s best.

“It is one thing to win matches, another to dominate every match,” said Yount. “He never made it to the second period this year. I can’t recall that every happening.

“Cohlton might be the best kid to ever compete at the high school level all four years.

She won her eighth individual college title on March 15-16 at the Tar Heel Classic in Case de Campo, Dominican Republic with scores of 66, 69 and 67 for a three-round total of 14-under par 202.

“That has sort of been the pattern for me while I’ve been in college,” explained Kupcho. “I kind of start slow and then get better as the spring season goes on. After playing so much during the summer, I come back and just want a break. Once I get it that want to finish him every time.

“Being a big guy as a freshman, I wasn’t the biggest or the strongest.

I was able to use a little bit of my savvy or whatever. Now my physical ability has caught up with me a little bit and it feels good. It has definitely been a grind. It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of hours, but I’ve got a hold on it and it feels real good.”

Schultz, who won the Cadet Greco World Title in 2017, will wrestle next year at Arizona State and possibly in the 2020 Olympics.

“I love Colorado,” he said. “I was born and raised in Colorado. It will always have a special place in my

Kupcho has earned a Ladies Professional Golf Association card and will be turning pro after the college season concludes.
