About me I’ve had my company for four years.

It’s Bud’s Home Team, and I hang my license with Keller Williams Executive Realty in Highlands Ranch. I’m married to my wife, Kathy, and I have a stepdaughter named Olivia who is a freshman at Rock Canyon High School.

When I got into real estate, I wanted to be different. I thought that I would build my brand around giving back.

The way I accomplish that is I donate 10 percent of my income to charities that have impacted the lives of my clients.

One thing I learned in real estate is it’s not about me. For my business, if I truly believe it’s not about me, then at closing it should be about a charity that

has impacted the life of my client.

I’ve lived in Colorado for 26 years. I live in Lone Tree. I’m a skier and a runner. I’ve done eight marathons and I did an Iron Man eight years ago and I’ve loved living in Colorado, especially in Douglas County.

What is your inspiration?

I’ve always been a frustrated entrepreneur. I’ve always had these big ideas without the guts to act on it. My vision was to use my business as a force for good. There’s more than just buying big houses and making a lot of money and driving fancy cars. There’s nothing wrong with that. I want a business where I earn a living and I give back to the community. I’ve said this to other people: I will measure my success in real estate by how much I can donate to charity.

It’s very, very rewarding. I’m in the day-in, day-out trenches of real estate.

What’s most rewarding to me is to

teach my stepdaughter, Olivia, that you can have a business, but you can give back with your business. There’s a social conscience to my company that I’m very, very proud of.

What advice would you give to a young entrepreneur?

Find something you’re passionate about, then find a way to earn a living but also be able to give back. There’s an expression I live by. There’s a book called “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek. The whole premise of the book is two sentences: “People don’t buy what you do. They buy why you do it.”

Do something that you love and find a way with your company to give back to somebody. It’s more than just profits.

The March 13 blizzard, called a bomb cyclone by officials, plowed through neighborhoods in Highlands Ranch, leaving trees uprooted and structures damaged.

The unincorporated community in

Douglas County received about 6 inches of snow during the storm, according to the National Weather service. The Highlands Ranch Metro District, which maintains most public roads in Highlands Ranch, assessed the damage the following day.

Residents fight proposed 5G infrastructure in neighborhoods Many worry about health risks, home values

Infrastructure that would bring some of the fastest mobile internet speeds to Highlands Ranch has many community members concerned over potential health risks, neighborhood eyesores and diminished home values.

“I moved to Highlands Ranch because I liked nature, I liked being away from Denver, the big city,” resident Terri Polakowski said. “If 5G moves in, I will probably leave.”

Zayo Group — a Boulder-based company that provides communications infrastructure services — is working with Sprint to install 550 small cell sites across the Front Range to prepare for the next generation of mobile networks, dubbed 5G. Sprint and other providers say the newest network delivers speeds at 100 times faster than what is available today.

In November, Zayo brought before the Highlands Ranch Community Association Development Review Committee an application proposing 30 small cell sites across Highlands Ranch. The proposal called for 24-foottall and up to 36-inch-wide green poles along sidewalks in residential areas.

The committee — which is solely a referral entity and doesn’t have authority to set guidelines — cited issues with the appearance and location, as well as outrage among residents over potential health hazards of the sites’ high radio frequency energy.

According to Douglas County officials, Zayo’s application is on hold.

In an email statement to Colorado Community Media, Shannon Paulk, director of corporate communications at Zayo, said: “We’re sensitive to both community needs and the need for reliable, high-speed mobile service. Our goal is to listen to the concerns of the community and attempt to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome.”

Last September, Zayo submitted to Douglas County its first pre-submittal site improvement plan for small cell sites along public streets in Highlands Ranch, according to county documents. It submitted more than a dozen more over the following four months.

Zayo will go through the county’s site-improvement plan process as long as the county’s protocols are not pre-empted by state or federal law or regulation, according to county officials. In that process, comments from referral agencies — such as the HRCA Development Review Committee — are to be reviewed by the applicant and a county planner.

Zayo’s next step would be to submit a formal application to Douglas County Planning and Engineering services. Zayo did not provide a timeline for the project.

“We continue to work closely with Douglas County on the permitting process,” Paulk said in an email correspondence. “As this process is ongoing, we don’t have specifics to share at this point.”

Public concerns At a March 6 HRCA Development Review Committee meeting, dozens of community members voiced opposition to Zayo’s proposal. Committee members said they would forward the comments to the county for review.

“We just want more time before this experiment has to happen,” resident Amber Shaible said. Her son has an autoimmune disorder that is heightened by electromagnetic exposure, she said.

Regulations are in place at the federal level intended to protect people from electromagnetic fields.

The Federal Communications Commission last updated its guidelines on human exposure to radiofrequency from cell towers and cell sites in 1996.

The FCC says its guidelines are in line with those established by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, a nonprofit corporation chartered by Congress that studies radiation and best practices in the public interest, according to its website.

Many cell sites already exist in Highlands Ranch. Owned by wireless providers like Verizon, they are disguised as light poles and placed along major thoroughfares, including Quebec Street and Highlands Ranch Parkway.

Some residents feel like that is enough.

“My question is,” Damir Stupar asked about 5G, “ why do we need it?”

County’s hands are tied Local government has little control over telecommunications infrastructure because of state and federal regulations.

“Potentially, they may not be able to deny it,” Dawn Johnson, senior assistant county attorney, said of Douglas County Planning and Engineer services. “It depends on what access the provider needs, what ability the provider has to serve the area and update the network, and the extent to which the provider can and is willing to work with the governing authority.”

Passed in 2017, Colorado House Bill 17-1193 limits local municipalities’ authority by permitting small cell facilities in all zoning districts and allowing small cell sites to be placed on existing infrastructure owned by a utility company or local government in public right-of-way. That includes light poles, traffic signals and utility poles on public streets and sidewalks.

In September 2018, the FCC released an order further limiting the authority of local entities and expediting the permit process.

Sheriff spars with county commissioners on ‘red flag’ bill Spurlock calls new resolution extortion; commissioners say they’re upholding Constitution

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock walked from the back to the front of a near-silent yet crowded Douglas County Board of Commissioners hearing room on March 12, first to take the podium.

He was there to defend House Bill 19-1177, the Extreme Risk Protection Orders bill, commonly called a “red flag” bill, during a public hearing Spurlock in which commissioners were poised to adopt a resolution rebuking the controversial legislation.

Their drafted version, which they ultimately approved, questioned the need for HB 19-1177 with current state law C.R.S. 27-65-127 in place and declared the county would only fund the enforcement of constitutional laws. A resolution summary said the bill lacked due process.

Spurlock urged commissioners to wait and consider amendments to the bill. He said he was actively working with state legislators to bring some forward and planned to meet with Senate leadership the

following morning. He later told reporters the county’s resolution was premature, poorly worded and a badly thought-out political move.

“Essentially what they’re trying to do is extort me,” he said. “I encouraged them the other day not to do this, but they went along with it.”

Not a ‘sanctuary’ The bill has spurred an emotional debate, including in public comment at the March 12 board meeting, in which some say the bill will improve public safety, while others say it violates Second Amendment rights.

The bill was introduced in the state House on Feb. 14 and was given final approval there March 4. It was scheduled to go before the Senate State, Veterans, & Military Affairs committee on March 15.

If signed into law, it would allow family, household members or law enforcement to petition a judge to take guns from an individual they argue is a “significant risk” to themselves or others.

If granted, the initial protection order lasts up to 14 days. A second hearing would then be held to determine if the extreme risk protection

order should continue. An attorney would be appointed to the gunowner for this hearing.

If the court finds under a higher standard a person is a significant risk to themselves or others, the judge could bar them from possessing, controlling, purchasing or receiving a firearm for 364 days.

A flurry of Colorado sheriffs and local governments, nearly 20, recently adopted so called Second Amendment Sanctuary policies, including neighboring El Paso County earlier that same day, but Douglas County commissioners said their resolution is more nuanced.

They said they were not declaring Douglas County a Second Amendment sanctuary. Commissioners also stated they would only withhold funding from the sheriff ’s office if the bill is signed into law and a court finds it unconstitutional.

Still, the resolution puts the commissioners at odds with their own sheriff. Spurlock has advocated in favor of two red flag bills, the first introduced during the 2018 session — which was voted down — and the second one now under consideration. He served as a consultant to the House and Senate as it was drafted.

His support followed the death of Deputy Zackari Parrish in a 2017 shooting that also injured six other

people. Parrish was killed while trying to place a man he believed was experiencing a manic episode on a mental health hold.

Opinions split District 1 Commissioner Abe Laydon said commissioners did not take the resolution lightly “nor did we jump on a bandwagon.” They wanted to communicate a message — that the county is “a safe, constitutional county.” “(Spurlock) is a great friend and he knows I disagree,” said District 2 Commissioner Roger Partridge.

Public comment was limited to three minutes per person and was roughly split between people who support the red flag bill and those who do not. About 40 people testified.

People in favor of the commissioners’ resolution said the bill as it stands now is unconstitutional and violates due process. Some called it “gun-grab” policy with unintended consequences.

Others said a petitioner could simply lie to a judge, that a defendant could be wrongly accused and still have their guns taken for the 14-day period. More lamented that the initial hearing could be held without the accused present.

Score the interview: Tips on building a healthcare resume A template resume may work well in most industries, but when it comes to jobs in healthcare, the key to success is all about being specific.

Applying for a job in the healthcare industry requires extra time and a focus on the details. Some tips to be successful in applying for a healthcare job includes: Be specific in the objective: Don’t just send a general resume listing your past work experience, education and an indirect objective first line. Look at the description for the job you are

applying and spend the time to make your resume match the job.

Make sure you highlight your skills and abilities as truthfully as possible.

education, experience and accomplishments.

As with all resumes, it needs to be easily readable. A hiring manager does not have time to dig for the details these days. The resume needs to be ready to skim, allowing a hiring manager to pick out the main words that are likely featured throughout the job description post.

Brag about your education: This is a chance to really highlight every accomplishment you have. This means adding all certifications and licenses you’ve received. Include all of them even if they seem irrelevant.

Don’t forget the basics: While the healthcare industry might require specific resumes for every position, they still require the basics to success.

Those basics include:

Don’t exaggerate your qualifications: It may be a job you really want, but don’t quite meet all the requirements.

Even though tempting, never exaggerate your skills, especially for careers in the healthcare industry.

A hiring manager must be able to trust that what they see on that resume is the truth.

When listing your education, be sure to include: • Full certification and license names • The name of the certifying body from which you received the education • A certification number if available • List expiration dates anywhere you can One page doesn’t fit all: Since resumes became the main document needed to apply for a job, most experts recommend you keep it short and simple and cut it down to only one page. In the healthcare industry that isn’t always the case.

As long as all the information is relevant to the job, don’t be afraid to go beyond the one page. It’s OK to have two to three-page resumes if they highlight your skills, objectives,

Proofread: When it’s your own writing and your own work, proofreading might be tough. A sentence you’ve read five times, retyped and reconsidered might look correct because you are on auto-read. Don’t be afraid to have someone else read it over, and for yourself, take a break before proofreading so you are looking at it with fresh eyes.

Facts matter: Make sure you have the names of institutions, universities and education programs correct.

Take the extra minute to look them up online and assure you’ve stated all names correctly.

Include a cover letter: Like the resume, your cover letter shouldn’t just be a template. Your cover letter should be specific to the job you are applying for. Don’t be afraid to change the cover letter with every new application.

Douglas County finds property tax error affecting thousands Residents in and near Lone Tree can expect new tax statements soon

Douglas County says an error made when calculating residential and commercial property taxes resulted in thousands of homes receiving incorrect tax statements in January.

Approximately 7,600 property owners in Lone Tree, Acres Green, Province and Province Center near Highlands Ranch who were undercharged will receive corrected statements in the near future.

The owner of a home valued at $579,745 can expect a difference of $311 to their amended statement.

The error occurred when staff excluded a portion of the South Suburban Park and Recreation District’s mill levy on the mill levy certification. The district said on March 11 it was not prepared to comment but that the process for amending the mistake was in Douglas County’s hands. The error shorted the district nearly $5.6 million in operating revenue.

tha Marshall said the mistake was made by the county’s budget office. The office learned of the error on March 8 after being alerted by the district. Marshall apologized to the district and other county offices involved in preparing tax statements.

“Errors like this are not acceptable and we will be implementing new procedures so that this never happens again,” Marshall said. “It was (the budget department) that made the error. It was completely our fault.”

County commissioners heard the matter at their March 12 board meeting and approved a resolution correcting the mill levy certification. The assessor’s office will now correct the mill levy in its system. The treasurer’s office will then prepare new statements.

The South Suburban Park and Recreation District manages indoor and outdoor recreation amenities in six communities and three counties, including Littleton, Centennial, Lone Tree and unincorporated portions of Douglas, Jefferson and Arapahoe Counties. The mill levy error affected Douglas County residents only.

Bill aims to stop most scanner encryption Capitol Report

As more law enforcement and fire agencies across the state encrypt or consider encrypting their dispatch radio traffic, a bill was introduced March 12 that seeks to halt the trend.

Blocking the public and news organizations from listening to scanner communications has spurred debate in recent months between media analysts, who say the information is necessary for government transparency, and public-safety leaders, who argue encryption can keep personnel safer.

House Bill 19-1235 would require most entities of the state government and of cities, counties and special

It rarely appears in text, because we rarely write with fillers.

You might say “uh,” but you don’t write “uh.” Or if you do, it’s uncommon.

I had a college professor who said “uh” every third word. I started keeping track. One day he was up to 88, and I couldn’t take it anymore.

I did something regrettable.

I left a note in his mailbox about it.

How he diminished his “wonderful lectures” (I had to add a little softener) with hems and haws.

Hey, I’m not perfect. I could be called to task by a strict grammarian all day and all night.

There’s a linguist named John McWhorter who astonishes me with his grasp of words, etymologies and meanings. He is an associate professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University.

McWhorter wrote a lengthy piece for The Atlantic (Nov. 25, 2016), titled “The Evolution of `Like.’ How the ubiquitous, often-reviled word associated with young people and slackers represents the ever-changing English language.”

I’ll make reference to it shortly.

The first time I saw — and heard — McWhorter, he was being interviewed

by Don Lemon after the Jussie Smollett incident.

McWhorter spoke without a script but sounded as if he were reading from

one. There were no “uh’s,” and every thought flowed from the preceding one, and led into the next one.

Try it sometime. I can’t do it.

I had two impressions at the time: The man is a mastermind, for one. In person, I would fail his standards miserably, for two.

No one is that articulate. It’s unnatural.

Take Woody Allen. Please.

He hems and haws all over the place (in his films), and they are actually built into his scripts.

Bill would help reduce suicide As a one-time state lawmaker who had an “A+” NRA rating and a former Republican candidate for governor, I’m strongly supportive of HB-1177 — a bill that would provide extreme risk protection orders to temporarily remove firearms for those in the midst of a crisis.

My perspective on this issue is personal. Our family was in constant fear of losing our eldest daughter to suicide nearly a decade ago. She was just a child of 17 years at the time. Today, she’s healthy and successful.

Our family took action and removed all the firearms in our home. However, today Colorado’s families, especially those who have adult family members living on their own, don’t have such capabilities to take preventive measures.

I challenge the members of this committee, especially my fellow Republicans, to find common ground and work together in a bipartisan manner to support a thoughtful, comprehensive bill that balances Second Amendment protections with desperate families coping with a loved one in the midst of a crisis.

Each member of this committee has an opportunity to make a real difference and reduce suicide in their community, help and protect law enforcement, and, most importantly, give hope to desperate families. Please act!

Bad move by commissioners More than 25 percent of states across the country have passed red flag laws and another dozen, including Colorado, are considering doing the same. In less than three months into this new year, 19 officer-involved shootings in our state have resulted in 10 fatalities. Gun violence remains a controversial topic in Colorado and across the nation. We know the Second Amendment grants us the right to bear arms, but it seems we have forgotten our founding fathers also had a vision of securing life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

While we all define happiness differently, it doesn’t look like a 29-yearold deputy dying in an ambush-style attack in the predawn hours of the new year. It doesn’t look like fellow officers shot alongside their partner and it certainly wasn’t preventable as insinuated by county commissioners by simply leveraging statute “already on the books.”

Our commissioners have turned their backs on law enforcement by passing a resolution condemning the red flag bill, and the county GOP has expressed its “profound disappointment” with the sheriff for “actions against the Constitution of the United States.”

Even the NRA declares it’s time to “stop dangerous people before they act,” according to an National Public Radio article.

Relationships around money are important to examine

hen many people hear the term “financial adviser,” they may think of someone who mostly manages investments.

While that may have been true in the past, today you may desire a holistic adviser who focuses on your life goals and relationships. Your adviser could help strengthen your marriage and help you set good examples for your kids.

One important area of focus is the impact of personal relationships on your financial future. Surprisingly, few couples discuss their long-term financial goals and short-term approaches to money management before they get married, in my experience. This can lead to significant challenges down the road as couples with different objectives and spending habits struggle to find common ground. This may be more true as many couples are waiting longer to get married and financial patterns are already well-ingrained.

In the paper “Examining the Relationship Between Financial Issues and Divorce,” researchers found that couples who argue or disagree about finances are 69 percent more likely to get a divorce than couples who don’t. ¹ Talking about money is important, as financial disagreements can have a major impact on relationships. The following tips are intended to help couples foster a positive relationship with money

• Communicate: When talking about finances, the conversation should be ongoing. Incomes grow and decline, families change, and unexpected events occur. • Be fair: The way money is handled within a household should be fair and equitable. It is likely that one person will earn more than the other. However, to foster equality, it is important that money is viewed as belonging equally to each spouse or partner.

• Agree on setting limits: You may also consider setting a limit in how much one person can spend on non-essential items without having to talk to the other person. Discuss what this limit should be and make sure it is the same for each person. Whether it is $100 or $1,000, find an amount that makes sense. By setting these limits, each spouse has a certain degree of flexibility, while still seeking

Tips and tricks for starting gardens in spring, early summer

H

umanity has always had a connection with the earth, said John Stolzle, a Colorado State University Extension agent in Jefferson County who specializes in horticulture, plant pathology and food systems.

“Gardening is a direct way for people to interact with nature’s processes,” Stolzle said.

However, with the state’s diverse — and often unpredictable — weather, Colorado can present greater challenges to gardeners than many other U.S. states.

Luckily, Stolzle said, “there are a few tips and tricks that can help when starting up spring and summer gardens.”

It all depends on the last frost Planting in Colorado is highly weather dependent and each year is different, Stolzle said.

But one tip to remember is not to start too early, Stolzle said.

“The key, in my opinion, is to be patient,” he said. “And to plant according to the last predicted frost date.”

Because the latter varies regionally, paying close attention to local weather forecasts may be the best bet. In general, gardeners can bestguess that the last frost date will likely be sometime late April or early May, Stolzle said.

PlantTalk Colorado, a resource for Coloradans to find research-based gardening information specific to Colorado’s diverse climate, suggests that “people in the Denver metropolitan area normally use Mother’s Day as a guide for when to plant.”

This year, Mother’s Day falls on May 12.

General recommendations on when to start plants indoors range from two to eight weeks before transplantation, Stolzle said. But to get a more exact time frame for each plant, he said, seed packets will usually include the specific recommendations for that plant.

Acclimating plants to the outdoors before planting them outside can also help, Stolzle said.

But, to “avoid shocking their systems, plants should be introduced to the outdoors slowly, over time,” Stolzle said.

Grandma’s tip to avoid a freeze The location of a plant, the duration of a cold spell and temperature can all play a part in a plant freezing, Stolzle said.

Colorado State University Extension’s Colorado Master Gardeners are volunteers trained in horticulture. Master Gardeners have a plethora of troubleshooting information and advice for new and experienced gardeners, available all year round.

Mansion volunteers get salute for dedication Facility runs with help of docents who assist, guide visitors

The Highlands Ranch Metro District owns the Highlands Ranch Mansion, but volunteers play a large role in making the iconic building available to the public.

From February 2018 to January 2019, mansion volunteers contributed 2,912 hours, according to the metro district.

The volunteers, also known as docents, greet visitors during community events and open hours, which are held Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. And they go through hours of training to lead tours on the history of the 128-year-old property.

On March 6, the metro district honored more than 50 volunteers for their dedication. Paul Chamberlin was named volunteer of the year with 241 hours.

Chamberlin’s background includes two decades as the Denver

Broncos stadium announcer and a stint as a Disney World cast member, according to a news release from the Highlands Ranch Historical Society. For six years, he and his wife traveled crosscountry in an RV. He now works in financial services.

Chamberlin and his wife Sandy have volunteered at the mansion since 2016.

According to the historical society, he is nicknamed “the sheriff ” for his ability to keep everyone in line. He loves welcoming visitors and learning where they are from.

In a media release from the metro district, Susie Appleby, volunteer and historic programs coordinator, said Chamberlin is well loved by his fellow volunteers and mansion staff.

“It’s such a joy to work with people that are so committed to not only learning everything they can about the Mansion’s history, but also sharing it with the community,” Appleby said in the release.

Other top volunteers were Teri Burget, Sandy Chamberlin, Karen Dangberg, Todd Noreen and Sharon Swiderski, who each completed more than 150 hours of service.

A Colorado Master Gardener reference sheet published by Colorado State University Extension notes that “grandma’s old method of covering the garden with blankets and sheets works well as long as the fabric remains dry.” The cover should be placed in the evening before a frost is suspected, but it must be removed the next day so the sunlight can recharge the soil with heat.

Cool versus warm season veggies “Knowing the difference between cool and warm season vegetables can save a lot of headache,” Stolzle said. “But, in all of these cases, a cold, hard freeze will likely kill any plants left out or left unprotected.”

Hardy, cool season vegetables: Hardy, cool season vegetables prefer cooler temperatures and can likely survive a “frosty nip,” Stolzle said.

They can be planted outside about two to four weeks before the anticipated last frost date of the season.

Examples include onions, some spinach, lettuce, radish and broccoli.

Highlands Ranch library set to reopen Celebration scheduled for April 6, when facility again welcomes the public

After a four-month closure, James H. LaRue library will soon reopen its doors to the public. Patrons are invited to a grand-opening celebration featuring spring-themed activities and light refreshments from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 6.

“The community has been so supportive throughout our time of reduced services and construction and we’re excited to show off their new library,” Highlands Ranch branch manager Tammy Clausen said in a news release from Douglas County Libraries.

The 18-year-old Highlands Ranch library, 9292 S. Ridgeline Blvd., has been closed since Dec. 19 as it undergoes a $6.5 million renovation. At completion, it will resemble newer Douglas County Libraries locations in Parker, Lone Tree and Castle Pines, which all opened in 2016.

Library goers can expect a more open interior with natural lighting.

Just in time for spring, a scenic terrace on the second floor, overlooking Civic Green Park, will be covered

with a shade structure.

New features include interactive areas for children — like an expanded farm-to-table market playscape and kids corner storytime space — dedicated spaces for tutoring and the option to borrow a laptop using

a library card.

The first floor of the library will be geared toward kids and families.

A 4,500-square-foot civic center space on the second floor will accommodate up to 350 guests, more than double the amount previously allowed.

Some of the library’s beloved features remain. The Second Chapter Used Bookstore will now be located on the library’s second floor. A commemorative book wall and veterans’ display case are getting a mini facelift.

Come April 6, patrons will once again have full access to the library’s book collection, children’s storytimes and numerous new and upgraded amenities, according to a news release from Douglas County Libraries. Book donations will resume at opening.

The April 6 celebration will kick off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and remarks from the library’s board of trustees and staff. Activities and crafts for kids and families will take place throughout the library and storytimes will be held on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Said Clausen: “Though no additional square footage was added during the renovation, every square foot of existing space has been touched, and patrons will see parts of the library they’ve never seen before.”

Collaboration Campus gets new name, hefty donation Sturm Family Foundation expands its portfolio with Castle Rock institution

Arapahoe Community College’s Collaboration Campus project has a new name, and one that came with a hefty and historical donation.

ACC has received $10 million from the Sturm Family Foundation, which it says is the largest in history for Colorado’s 13 institutions within the Colorado Community College System.

“A gift of this magnitude creates real-life opportunities for Colorado students to transition from the classroom into careers,” Colorado Community College System Chancellor Joe Garcia said in a prepared statement. “The Sturm Collaboration Campus will allow us to remove barriers to students and offer highquality programs to meet workforce needs.”

All $10 million will be used for the Castle Rock-based, higher-education school now named the Sturm Collaboration Campus. Half of the funds are already planned for staffing, equipment and technology. There’s also a match potential of $5 million.

The foundation was created in 2000

The campus aims to bring a new model of higher-education to the Castle Rock area. It will combine applied learning with workforce training in studies like cyber security, secure software development, business, accounting, entrepreneurship and health care.

Local company awarded Air Force contract STAFF REPORT

A Highlands Ranch company will work with the U.S. Air Force to enhance the design, packaging and kitting of the company’s patented airway stabilization system, SolidAIRity.

At the U.S. Air Force’s inaugural Pitch Day competition in New York City, Securisyn Medical LLC was awarded a $158,000 Small Business Innovation Research Phase I contract, according to a news release.

Through the contract, Securisyn Medical will work directly with the Air Force Special Operations Community to enhance SolidAIRity to help prevent unplanned extubation or the accidental removal of a lifesustaining breathing tube.

Ken Fellman, a Denver-based attorney who specializes in telecommunications and local government law, said the new standard is more lenient, creating a “gray area” between local government and the wireless industry.

Blazevich delivered the company’s winning pitch, which was singled out as one of the top three out of 60 presentations and featured in Air Force Magazine. The pitch competition was presented by the Air Force with the goal of inspiring and accelerating startup creativity toward national security challenges without the traditional daunting challenges of contracting with the military, the release said.

Securisyn intends to use its technology to help civilian and military health care facilities in critical care areas such as intensive care units, emergency departments and operating rooms, along with ground and air medical transportation entities.

The FCC’s order is being challenged in court but an outcome could take months, according to Fellman.

He encourages concerned constituents to reach out to senators and members of Congress, who have a say at the federal level.

“This is happening all over the country,” Fellman said. “Fortunately, in most cases, the people from the companies who are trying to get sites up recognize the frustrations and hurdles that local government have in this uncertain regulatory environment.”

Vista, Legend take game to Arizona diamonds

Diver, swimmer land college scholarships for prowess in pools

Franny Cable and Lindsay Stenstrom have a lot in common.

Both are heading to major universities next fall on swimming and diving scholarships and both are focused on their sports.

And both were honored by Colorado Community Media.

Cable, a senior at Arapahoe High School, is the 2018-19 South Metro Girls Diver of the Year. Stenstrom, a senior at Valor Christian High School, is the 2018-19 South Metro Girls Swimmer of the Year.

Cable won her second consecutive 5A diving title in February with a Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center pool record of 562.10 points. She also repeated as the Continental League diving champion.

“It was a hard year at the beginning but I definitely picked it up more and more as I got closer to state,” said Cable, who will continue her diving career at the University of Kansas. “It was my senior year and I was going to do the best that I could.”

Arapahoe diving coach Jeff Smith marvels at Cable’s talent and tenacity.

“Her laser-like focus is unmatched,” said Smith. “She gets up, smiles at the judges like it’s a game, then goes into the zone like none other. Since her second-place finish at state her sophomore year, she has lost only once. That happened this year at the Coaches Invitational. I saw it in her eyes — that was never going to happen again.

“She has grown as a person in our time together. At practice when she is not on the boards, she is always playing around. Her playfulness during practice is contagious. It makes everyone loosen up, have fun and come back.”

Stenstrom, whose mother Lori was a swimmer at Stanford and whose sister Brooke is a member of the current Stanford Cardinals team, has signed to swim at UCLA. She won the 5A Jeffco individual championships in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. She was fourth at the 5A state meet in the 50 freestyle and the runner-up in the 100 freestyle.

“Obviously I wanted to place high but I just gave it my best,” said Stenstrom.

Valor coach Melody Peotter expects to hear more about Stenstrom’s successes in the future.

“Transitioning from 4A to 5A was a challenge for our team, but Lindsay rose to the challenge and finished her high school career well,” said Peotter.

“Lindsay is a strong competitor and committed athlete. She excels at everything she puts her mind to both in and out of the pool. I believe she will thrive next year swimming at UCLA.”

ow that the winter sports season is over and driveway is finally clear of snow, it is time to catch up on a few other things.

First off, the Mountain Vista and Legend baseball teams displayed good timing. There were no baseball, soccer or lacrosse games played in Colorado on OVERTIME March 13 or 14 because of snow. Golf or track events were also postponed.

However Vista and Legend did play baseball because Jim Benton they were in the Boras Baseball Classic of Arizona in the Phoenix area.

The Douglas County School District didn’t go on spring break until the week of March 18-22 but Vista and Legend players didn’t miss too much school because of two snow days.

Coming and going Darren Withey is the new athletic director at Highlands Ranch and Valor Christian AD Jamie Heiner has resigned effective at the end of the school year and is changing careers.

Withey, a Spanish teacher in the EDGE program at Legend, will take over for the 2019-20 school year.

He was the former Aurora Central head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Aurora Central, Mountain Vista and Legend and assistant baseball coach at Mountain Vista, Rock Canyon and Legend. He was an assistant softball coach at Legend.

Withey’s mother was a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan and his dad, Jim, was a semi-professional baseball player in Harvey, Illinois.

Heiner, Valor’s AD for the past four years, will be pursuing a full-time pastoral role at Journey Church in Castle Pines.

Valor has the search for a new AD. Impressive debut Clint Evans has made an impressive coaching debut in Colorado.

We aren’t “represented” by officials putting the safety of citizens in harm’s way despite lessons learned. Don’t worry commissioners, I’m certain our officers will maintain their oath to the Constitution by continuing to protect those refusing to do the same.

Polli Ring Highlands Ranch Sheriff deserves support I’m sorely disappointed at the lack of citizen support and representation shown at the Douglas County commissioners meeting on March 12 by our somewhat elected officials. Forty percent of voters do not agree with you. The three commissioners do not represent the whole of DougCo. At the hearing, which was well done, nonetheless allowed the views of the extreme right wing RMGO to publicly slap our duly elected sheriff. I believe our sheriff understands and supports citizen safety

in a more nuanced and educated view of our populace than Thomas, Laydon and Partridge.

Shame on especially you, Ms. Thomas, who has worked tirelessly to address teen suicide. Your stance has done nothing to make us feel safer by removing guns from those who can’t make sound life decisions.

Dates set for 18th Judicial District citizens academy Applications for seven-week program due by April 5 STAFF REPORT

Community members who would like an in-depth look at what happens from the time someone is arrested until trial and conviction are encouraged to participate in the 2019 spring citizens academy of the 18th Judicial District.

The free seven-week academy meets from 6 to 9 p.m.

Wednesdays from May 8 to June 19 in the Douglas County office, 4000 Justice Way, Castle Rock.

Each of the seven classes explores the role of various members of the office. Attendees will explore different functions of the specialized units in the district attorney’s office, including the Special Victims, Economic Crimes, Cold Case, Crime

Scene Investigations, County Court and Juvenile Justice.

Space is limited, and preference is given to applicants who live in the 18th Judicial District and are first-time attendees. Participants must be at least 18 years old and must complete an application and pass a criminal background check to be considered for attendance.

Members of the media are welcome to apply.

Evans was the head girls basketball coach at Olathe East in Kansas but took over as the head mentor at Cherry Creek, and the Bruins girls won their first-ever state basketball championship with a victory over rival Grandview on March 9.

“You don’t do this to win championships but I can’t imagine writing a better story,” said Evans.

“My family and I moved out here from Kansas City in June. I had hopes of doing something like this in the future but to do it in our first year is just amazing.

“The kids did it. I didn’t come out here not knowing I had these good players. I watched Jana (Van Gytenbeek) play but a lot of these kids didn’t play a whole lot last year. We said it all year, one team, one goal, we’re going to find a way.”

You may also be able to refinance out of an FHA loan, if you qualify for a Conventional loan eliminating the mortgage insurance, assuming your home value has increased enough.

The VA has a streamline process to lower your rate. You can also take advantage of this rising real estate market using a VA cash out refinance with a loan up to 100% of the

current value.

Interest rates are still at historical lows, but may be set to rise soon.
