About me I’m officially over the hill this year and have lived in Highlands Ranch for 15 years. I was born in Iowa, and have lived in a few states, but visited Colorado several times in my youth while learning to ski. We decided to make the move when I grew tired of the concrete jungle of Houston and the unrelenting hurricanes. When my company at the time offered us a transfer to Denver, we immediately jumped on the opportunity.

My husband also enjoyed visiting Colorado as a kid so we agreed on the Denver area. My cousin lives in Denver and had recommended a marriage class at Cherry Hills Community Church. That life-giving class became the center of our community. Admittedly, I did briefly consider moving back to Iowa, but there are three problems with Iowa — January, February, and March.

My career I’m currently a life sciences sales underwriter in the insurance industry, but my most recent side hustle has been the business novel I wrote with my dad, “The Best Seller.” He’s been in sales for decades and has mentored hundreds of young professionals. We combined forces to help the younger

generations who are trying to build their business — think Realtors, entrepreneurs, direct marketing reps and really anyone else who understands relationships are imperative to their success. The book is really about the power of mentoring and the importance of working together whether you’re in business or leading your family.

A supportive community I’ve been involved at Cherry Hills since we moved here and was a leader in the MOPS group there for a few years. Personally, I believe we all need a supportive community where we can “get real.” Being a new mom is extremely difficult and in the MOPS role, I was able to come alongside many women to support and encourage them. There were bumps in the road for me as well, and I was thankful to be able to lean on the group during the more difficult times.

I have also been heavily involved at our local public charter school. I genuinely enjoy rallying the community behind a good cause, so my husband and I have led the big fall fundraiser for a few years now with very low overhead and remarkable success. My husband is also a huge advocate of the WatchDOGS program, where dads help out in the classroom and throughout the school for a day.

COURTESY PHOTO wanted to build a community in our neighborhood so I started a quarterly block party. That blossomed into an annual neighborhood Fourth of July parade. Events like those have brought us together and built relationships not just among the adults, but with the kids as well.

In high school, I researched spirulina algae during an internship at a R&D company, and since then I’ve always been intrigued by this mysterious, and powerful biomass. Algae is not only a sustainable food source

but can be used for water treatment and pollution mitigation—truly a well-versed organism. In a time where people are clamoring for alternative sources of protein (crickets, anyone?), spirulina algae should be getting more attention. Perhaps we will add some spirulina side dishes to the next block party and see what people think.

Sheriff’s employee celebrates 45 years with office Lt. Larry Noble recognized by county commissioners during meeting

When Lt. Larry Noble started working at the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office in 1975, there were only 14 employees there. Including the sheriff himself.

The county only had about 14,600 people, and during some shifts, there was only one deputy available to cover all 844 square miles.

“You could go a whole shift without there being a call for service,” Noble said.

Forty-five years later, a lot has changed in Douglas County and Noble has been there through it all. Five sheriffs, three sheriff ’s office buildings and countless residents have come and gone during his tenure.

At a Feb. 25 county commissioners’ meeting, colleagues and friends of Noble spoke about his commitment to the sheriff ’s office as he celebrated his work anniversary.

“I always say I stand on the shoulders of giants,” Commissioner Abe Laydon said in the meeting. “And you are a giant in this profession and this community.”

“He’s a remarkable man and the dedication and service that he has provided this county is second to none,” Weaver said of Noble.

Noble has worked in every division of the sheriff ’s office, beginning with his job as a dispatcher. A year after he was hired, he became a deputy.

Throughout his years on the job, he’s been on a number of notable calls for service. He responded to the Highlands Ranch Mansion when then-owner Lawrence Phipps had a heart attack.

He was also working the night of March 11, 1978 when the county courthouse burned down.

“I could see the glow of the fire in the sky,” he remembers.

Noble also had a part to play in the current judicial center in Castle Rock. He was sent by the county to visit other jails throughout the county and help develop a plan. His name is on a bronze plaque inside the facility.

“He wore a lot of different hats …

to get us into modern policing. Larry played a major role in that,” Sheriff Tony Spurlock said at the commissioner meeting.

When Spurlock started with the sheriff ’s office, Noble had already been working there for about five years, Spurlock said. In their time on the job, the two have gotten to know each other well.

“Larry is one of those guys that’s just very well-rounded and is very calming,” Spurlock said in an interview. “He had the skills to calm situations.”

As a child growing up in Littleton, Noble was always fascinated by first responders. He also found himself serving as an advocate for other kids.

“There would be kids at school who would get like picked on and nobody would be their friend,” he said. “I would stick up for them when they would be picked on.”

When he got older, he served as a member of the Arapahoe County Rescue Patrol.

“That’s kind of where I got my taste for emergency services,” he said.

Later he worked as an EMT and eventually moved over to the sheriff ’s office.

After 45 years, he’s about ready to retire, he said. A big part of the reason he has stayed in the job so long is so that he could secure Medicare, he said. Now that he’s 65, he’s likely to move out of the role within the next year.

In the next phase of his life, he plans to continue the volunteer work he does with ham radio and highaltitude balloon groups.

“Douglas County has been real good to me, it has been a family to me,” he said in the commissioners’ meeting. “It’s going to be tough to go.”

Sheriff’s office seeks to return ring found in Highlands Ranch

The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office is attempting to locate the owner of a unique ring found in Highlands Ranch in mid-January.

The ring has uncommon markings on it and appears to be an item that would be greatly missed, DCSO spokeswoman Lauren Childress said.

It was found Jan. 16 at a neighborhood mailbox in the area of White Haven Circle and West Stellars Jay Drive.

“The person who found the ring initially posted a note on the pole nearby saying `found ring,’” Childress said.

Employees of the DCSO evidence and property division are now hoping to find the owner.

“When we get some property turned

in that we know is either expensive or that someone is desperately looking for, we always try our best to hold onto it a little bit longer than 45 days,” evidence technician Sam Stairs said in a statement to Colorado Community Media.

A few years ago, someone turned in a box of paperwork including historical family records, she said.

“By doing a bunch of research we were actually able to find the family in Las Vegas and ship them all that paperwork,” she said.

Anyone with information on the possible owner of the ring can contact DCSO at 303-660-7558.

“I don’t know if any other agencies do it but (we) have always been compassionate about trying to find the owners of property that we know is important to someone,” Stairs said.

STEM shooting suspect will not face death penalty Family of slain teenager urged capital punishment

The adult suspect in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting that left one dead and eight more injured will not face the death penalty if convicted, according to court documents filed the morning of March 5.

The family of slain STEM senior Kendrick Castillo urged the death penalty.

Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler said in the filing he decided against the death penalty for Devon Erickson, 19, after numerous in-person and phone conversations with John and Maria Castillo, Kendrick’s parents.

“The Castillo family is unequivocal that it is their genuine desire that capital punishment be sought for the defendant,” Brauchler wrote. “It is my solemn obligation to ensure that their position is heard and understood through this pleading.”

But Brauchler noted jurors would be asked to weigh the suspect’s age and lack of serious prior convictions in deciding on the death penalty.

Erickson is accused of helping

Alec McKinney, 16, organize and carry out the May 7 attack at STEM. Castillo, 18, died while rushing Erickson with two other students at the onset of the shooting, according to authorities.

Erickson goes to trial in May and faces 44 felony charges, including first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty in January.

McKinney accepted a plea agreement in early February. He will be sentenced on May 18 for counts including first-degree murder and also will not face the death penalty.

Under state law there are 17 aggravating factors that can trigger pursuing capital punishment in a case. At least one must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt to a jury for the death penalty to be considered.

Brauchler outlined several potential aggravating factors that appear in the STEM case.

Those are, where the possession of the weapon used to commit the crime constitutes a felony offense; the perpetrator creates a grave risk of death to another in addition to the victim who was killed; the commission of a class 1, 2, or 3 felony that also results in someone’s death; an agreement to kill; and killing from ambush.

In weighing those aggravating factors, a jury would also be asked to consider Erickson’s age, the absence of significant prior con-

victions and additional evidence.

Erickson was 18 at the time of the shooting.

“We were for the death penalty,” John Castillo said. “We feel that there’s at least six aggravators there that would make it possible.”

John Castillo said in his conversations with prosecutors, the district attorney expressed doubt that they could successfully seek the death penalty. The district attorney anticipated defense attorneys would rely on Erickson’s cocaine use before the shooting, which the suspect alleges he was forced to consume, and his lack of serious prior convictions, John Castillo said.

Brauchler was not available for comment on March 5. A spokeswoman said the district attorney’s office does not comment on open cases.

The family knows death penalty cases can be “a long shot,” John Castillo said, pointing to the Aurora theater shooting and a jury’s decision against the death penalty for convicted killer James Holmes.

Holmes, who killed 12 people in the attack, was sentenced in 2015 to life in prison after jurors failed to unanimously agree to hand him the death penalty. Brauchler also prosecuted that case.

Still, the Castillos believe the death penalty is “deserved in this case,” John said.

“Justice for Kendrick would mean

them having to sacrifice and give up their life,” John Castillo said. “It’s just that plain and simple. That’s how my wife and I feel.”

McKinney will face a minimum sentence of life with the possibility of parole after 40 years and a maximum sentence of life with the possibility of parole after 40 years, plus 409 years in the department of corrections.

In February, Brauchler told reporters that McKinney could be eligible for a juvenile program in the Department of Corrections that paroles him in 20 to 25 years.

The death penalty has been a hotbutton issue in Colorado this year.

State lawmakers repealed the death penalty on Feb. 26. Colorado will be the 22nd state to abolish the death penalty once Gov. Jared Polis signs the bill into law, which he has pledged to do.

The law would only apply to crimes charged on or after July 1, which would have meant Erickson was eligible for the death penalty.

John Castillo said he felt repealing the death penalty in Colorado should have been sent to the voters and he was disappointed to see lawmakers decide for them. He also understands some people will disagree with the family’s stance on capital punishment.

“I think most people would have to be where my wife and I are to understand,” he said.

Tri-County Health leader: Stay informed, calm when it comes to virus Community gets expert advice on COVID-19

As the novel coronavirus — COVID-19 — makes a foothold in the United States, local health officials are reminding people about measures they can take to help stop its spread, prevent themselves from contracting it and prepare for potential outbreaks at the local level.

Executive Director John Douglas of the Tri-County Health Department, which covers Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, urged local residents to first and foremost stay calm, and remember Colorado remains at low risk for an outbreak.

He then cautioned the Douglas public to stay informed about the virus and rely on credible sources of information.

While coronaviruses as a family are not new, he said, the COVID-19 outbreak that began last year is a new strain.

Health officials are learning more and more about the virus as the epidemic grows, including how it transmits throughout a community. COVID-19 had an initial estimated mortality rate of 2% to 3% but that is showing signs of lessening, Douglas said.

A vaccine is not yet available and likely won’t be for a year or more, although efforts are underway to develop one quickly, Douglas said.

To stay healthy now, people should follow common-sense practices. Wash hands frequently and avoid touching one’s face. Cover the mouth and nose with an elbow when coughing or sneezing. Avoid contact with people who are known to have COVID-19. People who are elderly and/or have a lung disease are the most at-risk groups.

As for local outbreaks, Douglas said to think ahead.

While the Tri-County Health Department will lead Douglas County’s response to COVID-19, other county agencies are also preparing to assist in countering the illness.

The county Office of Emergency Management’s primary role will be to support the health department throughout the process, OEM director Tim Johnson said.

“If this gets worse,” he said, “we want to be ready and want to be able to protect our employees as well as our citizens.”

The OEM has set up a virtual emergency operation center and is activated at a level three, which is the lowest alert level.

“Which means, essentially, emergency management is monitoring and in contact with Tri-County Health for the latest information,” he said.

The emergency management office will help distribute information and decisions released by Tri-County, Johnson said.

“There’s always potential that this could get worse and we (may) actually need to have folks stay home and create some social distancing,” he said.

Johnson recommends preparing for a possible outbreak similarly to how one would for a significant snowstorm. That means having all essential items readily available at home, he said. This includes medications and food. though he added an outbreak could require people to stay home longer than a one- or two-day weather event would.

Buying some groceries and household items is fine but stockpiling toilet paper in the garage or clearing out water on store shelves is an overreaction at this time, he said. And it disrupts the supply chain at stores.

“Do some research on your own, go to the websites … follow the guidelines that are being put out,” he said. “There’s a ton of information out there for folks.”

Johnson also recommends finding ways to keep the people of one’s household busy and occupied if they are required to shelter-inplace.

Local hospitals are also preparing for a potential outbreak by educating, training and drilling their staff, representatives from UCHealth Highlands Ranch and Castle Rock Adventist and Parker Adventist hospitals said.

“We are making sure (the staff) feels comfortable if a COVID-19 patient walks in our door,” said Chris Olson, infection prevention and emergency preparedness program manager at UCHealth Highlands Ranch.

That means training staff in how to put on and take off their personal protective equipment. They have also created drills around how to deal with COVID-19 patients who come into the hospital system.

Parker Adventist and Castle Rock Adventist are also completing drills and training, a spokesperson said in an email to Colorado Community Media.

We’re trying to prevent transmission from happening. We’re trying to prevent fear of the epidemic, which

is very understandable, from becoming too exaggerated, and the anxiety creating social disruption. And frankly, we’ve seen the stock markets go up and down, so even financial disruptions as well.

Who is at risk of contracting COVID-19?

The highest risk is if you are in contact with somebody who has a known infection. That would be a high risk. Or, if you have traveled in one of the countries where there seems to be widespread circulation right now — within the incubation period, about 14 days.

How does COVID-19 spread? How can people prevent themselves from contracting it?

Most respiratory viruses are actually transmitted by people having stuff on their hands, and we touch our faces a lot.

If you’re in a place where you see people coughing or sneezing and not covering their mouth or nose, ideally with the crook of their elbow, I think all of us have got to get comfortable with politely telling people, “Hey, that’s not cool right now.”

Soap and water is probably better than hand sanitizer. If you can’t be near soap and water, use a hand sanitizer, but soap and water work really well.

How does COVID-19 affect different age groups and which are at the biggest risk?

We’re learning more every week.

Older people with underlying lung diseases appear to be at the greatest risk.

It may be kids are more likely to get it asymptomatically. Some people get so sick they die, others don’t even know they have it, and then 80% have it mild. F

The Tri-County Health Department has announced three presumptive positive cases of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, in Douglas County as of the afternoon of March 6.

The first Douglas County case confirmed by the state was a Castle Rock woman who recently traveled outside the country. Hers was the second presumptive positive case in Colorado, and was announced by Gov. Jared Polis on March 5.

Two more Douglas County cases were announced on March 6 — one for an adult who recently returned

from a trip to Italy, and the second, a student who returned from a trip to the Philippines. Two of the cases are from the Castle Rock area and the third is from Highlands Ranch.

“Both of these new cases are from known international exposure, have mild illnesses, and are isolated at home, not in a hospital. There is no indiciation of additional community exposure at this time,” Tri-County Executive Director John Douglas said in a statement.

Tri-County staff are monitoring people who may have been exposed to COVID-19, he said.

A presumptive positive case means the individual tested positive at the state level, but results had not been

confirmed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In a March 5 news release, TriCounty said the first Douglas County case is an “older adult woman from Douglas County who was exposed during an international cruise.”

The first case in Colorado was confirmed in a man who was visiting Summit County after flying into Denver International Airport. The Douglas County and Summit County cases are not believed to be related.

As of the evening of March 6, several other cases had been reported in Colorado, and officials said several quarantines were underway.

Douglas County Commissioner Roger Partridge issued a state-

ment on March 5 urging the public to practice good hygiene and stay vigilant. Wash hands regularly with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.

School district makes plans in case of local outbreak

If the novel coronavirus spurs a serious local outbreak, the Douglas County School District might conduct education electronically or remotely.

Missed days of school may need to be made up later.

Those were some of the precautions outlined in a letter to the community about how the district is monitoring the global coronavirus outbreak and its status in the United States. The district also created a designated webpage on its website, describing how the district will respond in the event of a local outbreak.

The district declined an interview on the issue.

The virus, called COVID-19, is a new respiratory disease that started in China last year.

I’m coughing, I’m sneezing, it’s been going on for three days, I’d like to come in and get tested.”

If you called me today and told me that story, I would say, “Just stay home and chill. This is very unlikely to be the coronavirus.” If you’re not becoming progressively worse, call your provider first. Don’t come in because testing is still potentially limited.

How should people prepare for the possibility of a local outbreak?

Stay alert. Stay rationally calm. Try to stay informed. Use discretion about where you get your information.

Social media and the internet can also be infiltrated with misleading stuff. Rumors that it’s been manufactured by a lab as some intentional thing or being used as a weapon. So, stay alert.

Be aware that in some cases schools have modified their schedules or closed. Think about what you would need to do if schools close. Think about friends and family who may, if things got worse, may be vulnerable or isolated. Your grandmother or neighbor who lives alone.

The Colorado Department of Education has “assured local school districts that they will provide support and additional flexibilities” in the event of extended closures, the letter says.

The letter says DCSD has “stringent cleaning practices” at district schools and facilities to prevent spreading the virus.

Yes, really since 9/11. There was a post-9/11 anthrax scare. Health departments like ours began to get into the game of emergency preparedness and management.

We, like other health departments, have activated our emergency operations center where we’ve got a much more streamlined operation around developing and testing protocols.

How would Tri-County Health Department handle an outbreak if one occurs locally?

We don’t have a vaccine now, so we’d be doing things like helping organize testing, helping monitor people who’d been exposed, helping monitor their isolation.

We’d be working with our hospitals if we hit a critical point where hospitals were beyond capacity, as to (what) Plan Bs looked like.

State now has ability to test for COVID-19 Quick turnaround expected from facility set up by CDPHE STAFF REPORT

The State Laboratory at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment can now test for COVID-19 — the technical name for novel coronavirus. Testing had previously been done only by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a news release.

The test will be used for people who meet the criteria for COVID-19 testing only; it is not available to the general public.

With staffing and equipment resources, the state lab has the capacity to test up to 160 samples per day, assuming test kits from the CDC are continuously available. Turnaround time for results is expected to be within 24 hours of specimen receipt at the state laboratory.

“Being able to confirm or rule out cases of COVID-19 at the state level allows us to be more nimble in responding to and controlling this disease if it occurs in Colorado,” State Laboratory Director Scott Bookman said in the news release. “The time frame for testing cases should be quicker than ever.”

Special-needs athletes, firefighters face off in hoops Therapeutic recreation program hosts friendly game each year

South Metro Fire Rescue and the Highlands Ranch Community Association’s therapeutic recreation program split into two teams March 4 for a friendly game of basketball.

Therapeutic recreation provides activities and sports for individuals with special needs. The goal of the program is to improve the quality of life for participants and build their self-confidence.

“What we try to build in therapeutic recreation overall is independence,” therapeutic recreation specialist Joe Lundquist said. “And it all happens out there on the court.”

The annual game between the therapeutic recreation participants and the firefighters has been taking place since 2018, Lundquist said.

Firefighter Brian Cronin started SMFR’s first team to play against the therapeutic recreation team and has kept coming back ever since.

“They don’t have a care in the world,” he said about the therapeutic recreation participants.

Teacher accepted into NASA program Bob MacArthur named Airborne Astronomy Ambassador

A Douglas County teacher is one of 28 teachers nationally and the only in Colorado selected to fly in a special NASA plane fitted with a one-of-a-kind telescope for astronomy research and science curriculum development.

Bob MacArthur will participate in the 2020 NASA Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors (AAA) program. The program’s 28 teachers from 13 states will undergo a week of training at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center Hangar 703 in Palmdale, California.

As part of the proMacArthur gram, teachers will participate in research flights on NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA. The Boeing 747 is modified to carry a 100-inch telescope and studies infrared light. At the end of the week, teachers help develop a physical science curriculum with the SETI Institute and teach it in their schools for two weeks.

Who is Bob MacArthur?

Bob MacArthur is an 11-year Highlands Ranch High School science teacher and 15-year Douglas County School District teaching veteran.

He’s been in teaching for 18 years total. MacArthur teaches ninth through 12th grade and covers subjects ranging from geology to meteorology to earth science.

His love for astronomy began in childhood MacArthur studied earth science and secondary education at Northern Arizona University.

What teachers will learn in AAA The 28 teachers are already meeting and working together through online webchats and courses. They are learning about the SETI Institute, the AAA program and taking an online astronomy course, MacArthur said.

This spring, when they spend a week

in California, they’re promised at least one flight on SOFIA. “We’ll take off at sunset and we’ll be up all night, flying at 43,000 feet in the stratosphere doing infrared astronomy,” MacArthur said. “A typical flight could be five to eight hours.”

Flying at that altitude is imperative for infrared research, he said, because water vapor below that blocks out 90% of infrared waves, which can’t be seen with the human eye the way colors in a rainbow can.

“SOFIA itself, because it looks at wavelengths of light, looks at everything from studying planetary atmospheres, to studying dust clouds around stars and how solar systems form to star formations and nebulas, all the way to dust around galaxies and star forming centers, galaxy formation, and things like that,” he said. “So, it looks at a lot.”

How his experience will help Douglas County students MacArthur said a huge part of his teaching philosophy is rooted in experiential learning. He completed a master’s program in experiential learning that allowed him to travel and bring those experiences back to the classroom, and he expects to have the same ability after flying on SOFIA. “I actually take students on trips to Hawaii, Iceland, I’m all about getting my students to experience the science that I’m teaching,” he said. “Whether I can take them there to see the auroras in Iceland or Hawaii and the volcanos and the observatories, or myself having that experience, like with SOFIA and the Airborne Ambassador program, I can bring that experience to them.”

The curriculum developed through the program will fit in with state standards and help students understand more about the universe, he said.

“By learning more about infrared astronomy, it allows us to teach our student more about galaxy formation, planet formation, things like that,” he said.

Therapy program helps veterans through art STAFF REPORT

The Castle Rock Artist Cooperative, in partnership with the Douglas County Veterans Monument Foundation, is looking for veterans who live in Douglas County who could benefit from the therapeutic effects of art.

The cooperative will launch the Veterans Art Therapy program April 1 and is looking for 10 students who have been honorably discharged from the military. Classes will meet for three hours each week for 26 straight weeks. The program will take place

at Hobby Lobby, 1361 New Beale St., Suite 200, in the Promenade in Castle Rock, and will be taught by Carol Hein, a local painter. The program will culminate with an art show that will be open to the public.

When a snowstorm canceled school and upended plans for an assembly to close out Make-A-Wish week at Mountain Vista High School, the community didn’t let uncooperative weather ruin plans.

Principal Michael Weaver rescheduled the assembly from Feb. 7 to Feb. 8, a Saturday. Despite less than 24 hours’ notice of the reschedule, more than 2,000 students gathered to honor the school’s Make-A-Wish child, 10-year-old Je’Moni, according to Make-A-Wish Colorado.

Je’Moni is battling cancer and wished to see a musical he wrote be produced. Mountain Vista’s theater department performed a number from his musical, “Lost,” at the assembly. The school also extended its Make-A-Wish week, earning $208,000

Kids for Wish Kids is a student fundraising program of Make-A-Wish Colorado. There are 175 Colorado

schools participating in Kids for Wish Kids this year.

In a statement, Je’Moni said Wish Week “made me feel special.”

“It was really exciting for me to see something I did, and for it all to come together,” he said.

Make-A-Wish Colorado grants wishes for children with critical illnesses.

Students last year raised more than $1.2 million for Make-A-Wish Colorado, resulting in 160 grants for children throughout the state.

Mountain Vista’s neighboring Highlands Ranch schools also participated in Wish Week.

Highlands Ranch High School raised more than $41,000. The school’s Wish Week honored 11-year-old Carson, who has leukemia and wants to visit the Bahamas. Rock Canyon High School raised more than $62,000 and honored 10-year-old Fabian, who has a congenital heart disease and hopes to visit Legoland.

SkyView Academy donated $13,164 to Make-A-Wish Colorado, which included donations from Walmart and roughly $3,200 raised by students in penny wars. The school honored 12-year-old Hayden, who is battling a brain tumor and also wants to visit Legoland.

ThunderRidge High School participated in a different fundraiser this year but has been a long-time MakeA-Wish Colorado supporter, said spokeswoman Michelle Mendoza.

QUIET Paintings, typically but not always, DESPERATION are considered art, and they are achieved with oil paint, acrylic paint or watercolor on a variety of rectangular and square substrates that include canvas, paper and even cave walls.

Craig Marshall Paintings can depict a number of Smith things: the human figure, landscapes, animals or, in the case of abstract expression, nothing

at all.

Artists have painted works of art for centuries.

Caves in France near the village of Montignac are historically famous because of the interior wall paintings that are thought to be 17,000 years old.

Artists such as Durer, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Monet, Picasso and Pollock have inspired art students and audiences, and their sublime efforts have filled art museums around the world, including our own Denver Art Museum, the Kirkland Museum and the Museum of Outdoor Arts.

While some artists, particularly the once-a-week variety that is fascinated by fruit and landscapes, will continue to paint on squares and rectangles, their numbers will dwindle to next to nothing.

This will have a major impact on future art exhibitions, on art schools, on art museums and on vendors — especially those who currently manufacture pre-made canvases.

One day, finding a canvas to paint on will be as difficult as finding a typewriter ribbon is now.

None of this means the end of art. There’s simply a new kid on the block.

It’s called “immersion art.” Immersion art is similar to entering a fun house at a cheap carnival where things seem to fall off the walls, endanger viewers and provide almost hallucinogenic images.

It’s happening and, most importantly, it’s cool.

Conventional art museum attendance — except for blockbuster

exhibitions featuring the work of art history’s Hall of Fame — is in decline, and if the museums don’t convert to immersion spaces, they will be deceased in the water.

New museums, specifically designed for immersion-type products, are sprouting all over the country and all over the world. Likewise: galleries and other venues where art is exhibited.

Think of yourself as Alice Liddell and you’ve just fallen down a rabbit hole. Or going on a date with Salvador Dali.

Empowering young women When I think back to when I was a 16-year-old girl in 1978, I was only expected to get good grades, go to college, get married, and raise a family. Fortunately, people in my life encouraged me to reach for my dreams. But not everyone has that support.

e are all familiar with the start of a story that begins with, “Once upon a time.” What if that time is right now? What if years from now someone tells our story based on what they know about us, what they have observed in us, and what they WINNING have experienced WORDS through us? They may just begin with, “Once upon a time,” and then fill in the rest of our story based on what they remember about us.

Here’s the thing, those stories that are told in the Michael Norton future will be based on what we are doing right now, today, and in all the tomorrows of our lives. The good news is that we get to control that narrative, don’t we? And we control that narrative based on our behaviors, our contributions, the words we use, how we respond to situations, our experiences, and by living out our story in such a way that

whoever we meet remembers us as someone who made their day, their job, and their life a little brighter.

When we think about our “Once upon a time” story that people will share, we should not worry about our past mistakes or failures because they are behind us now. We need to own and always learn from those mistakes and failures, but we should also remember that we have the opportunity to create our new story. The story that we really want to live and that we choose to live, and the one that we can start to begin authoring right now.

And maybe it is not a new story at all. Maybe we love the story we have lived and that we are living right now. And from this moment forward we can continue to write the rest of our story, we can build upon our journey by living more “Once upon a time” moments that helped shape how others will remember us and how we may have made a difference in their lives in some way.

Right now may seem like a fleeting moment in time, and that may

So, whatever it is we are doing right now, what we will do later today, and what we do in the fleeting but significant moments of tomorrow all matter. You matter.

Once upon a time there was a young man who seemed to move from job to job with no goals or vision for his future. Living for the moment, the fun, and the paycheck.

He was never thinking about the life story that he was writing. This went on until one day he heard someone else share their life story. It was a story about living a life as a wandering generality, a life absent of goals and dreams until one day someone else came along and made a dif-

Controversial program aims to reduce young children’s risk of drowning

ith drowning as a leading cause of death among young children, parents each year seek out the best swim safety classes for their children.

One program in the Denver metro area is so popular among residents that it rivals community recreation centers’ own swimming programs in participation, the rec centers say.

Infant Swimming Resource, or ISR, has conducted more than 8 million self-rescue lessons nationwide since its founding in 1966 and boasts having saved 800 children, according to its website.

In the daily, 10-minute sessions, infants and toddlers are slowly taught to control their breath underwater, roll on their backs and then float if they find themselves unexpectedly in water. Those old enough to maneuver themselves are trained to find a pool’s wall.

ISR is not meant to replace other swim safety measure and the program encourages practices including constant supervision of children near water, four-sided fencing around pools, self-locking gates and alarms on any entrance to a pool.

The program is not without controversy. The American Academy of Pediatrics has not endorsed ISR because it lacks research, and some worry its methods traumatize children.

Still, parents steadfast in their support of ISR and confident in its ability to save young lives flock to the self-rescue lessons at local recreation centers, private pools and other facilities year-round.

“We are kind of the last measure against drowning,” ISR instructor Julia McDonald said. “If all of those other things fail, we are the thing that will save them if nobody else is around.”

Thankful for ISR Unintentional drowning was the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States, according to 2017 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was the second leading cause of death for children 5 to 9 years old.

Standing by the pool at the Highlands Ranch Recreation Center at Eastridge, Christy Groza pointed to the exact spot where her 4-year-old daughter Hyacinth slipped and fell in the water two years earlier.

Hyacinth received ISR training when she was younger but had not been to a class in roughly a year when the accident happened. Nonetheless, she did not panic. Instead, she immediately turned on her back and floated until a lifeguard scooped her

up, Groza said.

“I was so thankful for ISR,” Groza said.

For 2-year-old Benjamin Simcik, ISR lessons are about giving him survival skills when swimming with his parents and two older siblings, his mother Laura Simcik said.

“When you’re in a pool with three kids it could be life or death so fast and it’s really scary,” she said. “He needs to know that if you’re in water you can go under really fast.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children begin swim lessons at 12 months old, if parents and their pediatrician agree it’s a good fit for the individual child, said Sarah Denny, spokeswoman and lead author on the AAP’s policy statement for drowning prevention. Research shows that’s the age where swim lessons become effective and can lower the risk of drowning, according to the AAP. Parents are urged to stay vigilant and never leave a child alone at bath time, in wading pools or anytime a child may be near water. Stay within arm’s reach of infants and toddlers.

Still, many drowning deaths occur when children were not expected to be near the water, Denny said.

Pools should be protected by four-sided fencing with self-locking gates. Alarms on entrances to a pool are also encouraged, Denny said. All children should receive swim lessons, and parents too, according to the AAP’s policy statement.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 and it remains within the top 10 leading causes of death for people through the age of 54, according to 2017 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are a variety of swim lessons available in the Denver metro area, at community recreation centers or private companies. Parents can get in the water and learn alongside their infants and toddlers in some classes. There are also small-group classes where parents watch poolside, or private, one-on-one lessons with an instructor.

‘Barefoot in the Park’ is iconic crowd-pleaser Neil Simon classic is among many works by playwright being staged around nation

Lights go up on an empty apartment in an old brownstone on East 48th Street in New York City. It’s February 1963. Only the kitchen is furnished.

A restless young woman enters and stuffs things into the refrigerator as she tidies up a bit. Suitcases are in the room. We meet Corie Bratter (Lynzee Jones), the somewhat ditzy resident newlywed, who has rented this chilly fifth-floor space for herself and new husband, Paul (Tim Howard), an already-a-bit-stuffy lawyer.

She awaits Bloomingdales’ furniture delivery — and the next years of her life…

The audience settles in for “Barefoot in the Park,” a favorite comedy

by American playwright Neil Simon (1927-2018). Many theater companies

across the nation are honoring the late, always-popular Simon this season, with performances of his works — more than 30 plays, plus as many television scripts.

Stomping and puffing is heard. It’s the telephone repairman (Giovanni Roselli), here to hook them up and assign a phone number. Imagine! Her own number …

A winded Paul appears next — those stairs are an ongoing issue. Each character’s response is different.

The phone guy leaves and a brief lovey-dovey interlude is followed by arguing. He wants to work. She wants to play … More steps on the stairs announce the arrival of Corie’s mother (the always-entertaining Annie Dwyer).

Amusing Neil Simon-crafted conversation continues and eventually the quirky upstairs neighbor Victor Velasco (Tom Mullin) appears to add another voice and color to the scene.

They decide to head to Staten Island for dinner, where something with flaming brandy is said to be on the menu … They return full of Greek wine and still talking, talking …

Director Bob Wells, a comic himself, has shaped this popular Simon work into an entertaining evening for audiences at Littleton’s Town Hall Arts Center, and it runs through March 22.

Wells’ directors’ notes say it opened in October 1963 and played 1,530 performances, until June 1967 — and it’s been a steady favorite since. “In 1963, Simon became the only living playwright to have a New York City theater named after him, when the Alvin Theatre on Broadway was named The Neil Simon Theatre,” Wells continues.

Wells also added a quote from comedic actor Nathan Lane; “Neil often said … he was writing dramas with comic moments in them. The most important thing with his material was to always play it as you would a serious play and allow Neil to do his work.”

Area students earn free ride through caddying Evans Scholars to receive $120,000 over four years to attend University of Colorado at Boulder STAFF REPORT

Thirteen students from Colorado have been awarded the Evans Scholarship, a full housing and tuition college grant offered to golf caddies.

The final selections were made after interviews Jan. 28 at the Cherry Hills Country Club.

Each caddie has a unique story that reflects the scholarship’s four selection criteria: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

The students will begin college in fall 2020 as Evans Scholars at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The Evans Scholarship is estimated at $120,000 over four years.

“Each of these deserving Evans Scholars epitomizes what our program has been about since its creation in 1930,” WGA Chairman Kevin Buggy said in a news release. “Their dedication, hard work and sacrifice is humbling, and we are honored to be able to help them pursue their dreams.”

The selection meeting in Colorado was one of more than 20 such meetings the Evans Scholars Foundation will have across the country through the spring. When the 2019-20 selection meeting process is completed by April, an estimated 285 caddies are expected to be awarded the Evans Scholarship.

A record 1,010 caddies are enrolled in 18 universities across the nation as Evans Scholars, and more than 11,050 caddies have graduated as

Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $14 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA Tour Playoff events in the PGA Tour FedExCup competition, are donated to the Evans Scholars Foundation.

303-222-8811 is working again, thanks to a Texas phone fanatic

Does the phone number 303-2228811 sound familiar? Longtime residents of the Denver area may recognize it as one of the city’s oldtime and temperature numbers.

Disconnected since the 1990s, the line recently came back to life thanks to John Lochridge, a Texas telecom engineer on a mission to resurrect the nation’s time and temperature lines.

“It’s something from childhood,” Lochridge said. “For many people, the time and temperature was the first number they learned to call.”

Lochridge has reinstated hundreds of lines around the country over the past several years. He begins with research, he said. He sometimes finds former time and temp lines listed in old phone books and road atlases, but others come from community Facebook groups.

Then, it’s a matter of working with phone companies to obtain the rights to the phone number itself, many of which have been disconnected for years. Finally, Lochridge uses his engineering and computer programming skills to connect the line to an automated recording that reads the time and local temperature. Some lines also read a weather forecast from the National Weather Service.

He said a woman in New Mexico recently dialed one of his newly acquired lines, simply for the sake of punching in the old numbers she dialed so often as a kid. Lochridge hadn’t yet attached the line to a

recording, so it rang to his personal phone.

“I told her what I was doing, and she said she didn’t know why, but it just made her so happy,” Lochridge said.

Time and temperature lines date back to the early days of telephony, Lochridge said.

People used to call operators to get the right time to set their clocks, which bothered phone companies because the calls were taking up operator time but didn’t generate revenue. For a time, phone companies hired employees specifically to stare at a clock and read the time out loud all day.

Eventually, companies developed automated lines that connected to a mechanical device that announced the time and temperature off of a series of electromagnetic drums. As the 20th century progressed, time and temperature numbers proliferated. Many were operated by phone companies, but others were run by local banks.

“Before the internet, and especially before television, it was the best way to accurately set your clocks,” Lochridge said.

In Denver, 303-222-8811 belonged to the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company, which became US West in 1991. The line was unceremoniously decommissioned sometime in the 1990s, and US West became Qwest, now CenturyLink.

The line joins another old Denver time and temp line that Lochridge restored: 303-844-4444. The Denver Post also operates the Weatherline Forecast Service at 303-337-2500.

“I hope it brings joy to people’s lives,” Lochridge said. “We try to offer hope, too. On Sunday I include a Scripture reading in the calls. I want to offer more than memories. A little hope for the future, too.”

Benjamin did some crying when he began lessons several weeks ago. By week two he could float in the water without being held. In his fifth week, Benjamin was turning on his back when let go by his instructor and kicking to the pool’s edge in seconds.

“It was a little hard to watch at first,” Simcik said of the daily lessons.

“I think the consistency helped me too because I knew what to expect.”

Benjamin and Hyacinth’s instructor, Jennifer Dombrowski, has been ISR-certified for nine years and works in Highlands Ranch. She lets each student move at a pace that works for them, she said. She never allows a child to try a skill — putting their face in the water, submerging, floating — until she’s certain they’re ready, she said.

Both Dombrowski and McDonald, who is an independent contractor at the Brighton Recreation Center and teaches in Arvada, said demand is high for the program.

“Every child needs to know selfsurvive,” Dombrowski said. “Give each child that skill before they find themselves alone in the water.”

Facing controversy Some in the swim community scrutinize or oppose ISR. Rumors that ISR instructors toss children in pools shroud the program reputation. Some say ISR’s practice of having children

Castle Rock swim instructor Russ Marsh, who owns Smilefish Swim School, said former ISR students have come to him afraid of the water, which he believes is because of the ISR training.

“I think it’s horrible, because I get kids that come to me that are 3 or 4 years old that are terrified,” he said.

“They’re scared to death of the water.

Not all of them, but too many.”

He’d prefer the youngest of swimmers undergo parent-taught classes, where parents are in the pool learning alongside infants and toddlers. It provides an important layer of comfort

for children, Marsh said, who began as a swim coach in 1972 and coached for 35 years, including several at the University of Colorado. He switched to running swim lessons 15 years ago.

And ISR is not endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics because it lacks any studies conducted by peer-reviewed journals.

AAP spokeswoman Sarah Denny has served on the organization’s council for Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention for seven years. The general pediatrician was also lead author on the AAP’s policy statement for drowning prevention.

“At this time, we do not endorse ISR because there’s no evidence to

show that ISR is effective in preventing drowning,” Denny said. “There is absolutely no evidence around ISR.” Denny said she isn’t sure why studies are not available on the program, but it leaves AAP without the necessary information to take a stance on ISR. A spokesperson for ISR could not be reached for comment.

Parents of children in ISR told Colorado Community Media they either were not aware of the criticism toward ISR or were not swayed by it. Firsthand experience, they said, earned their faith in the program.

“Some parents can’t handle their kids crying and they mistake that for being scared,” Groza said. “Just because your kid cries doesn’t mean they’re scared. It could just mean that they’re a 2-year-old and they don’t want to do something.”

Hub looks to the future Young people welcome in new Lone Tree amenity

When South Suburban Parks and Recreation District took over management of the Lone Tree Hub in 2015, it had the goal of making the community space “multi-generational.”

The former home of the Lone Tree Library, at 8827 Lone Tree Parkway, is now used for many purposes—weekly bridge club meetings, self-defense classes and memory loss support groups, among many enrichment classes and community meetings. Seniors, parents and young kids are the common day-to-day patrons.

On March 3, the multi-generational goal moved closer to fruition with the completion of the Hub’s esports lounge, the district’s first space dedicated to fostering a community of video gamers. The idea came from the district’s desire to reach more teenagers.

“It’s tough to speak to the teen community, and bring them in and find them a safe, social atmosphere anywhere in the district.” said Nicole Stehlik, assistant director of recreation.

The esports lounge is not exclusive to teens, or even hard-core gamers.

The space is for one and all who are interested in getting into esports, elevating their ability or socializing with other gamers.

South Suburban board members and staff had the idea to create an esports room after learning the National Parks and Recreation Association listed esports as an up-and-coming trend in recreation realms. South Suburban board member Dave Lawful said the district wanted to get ahead of the trends.

“This is well beyond pickleball,” Lawful said.

The room is laid out to resemble a living room, with two 55-inch mounted TVs and one 65-inch TV for gaming or streaming Twitch—a platform for gamers to watch other gamers and esports tournaments. There are six consoles mounted to walls around the

room, two Nintendo Switch systems, two PlayStation 4 systems and two Xbox One X systems. More than 250 games are available to play — from Tetris to Mario Kart to Apex Legends.

Chris Curtis, South Suburban’s esports program coordinator, designed the entire space to make it feel comfortable and to give gamers everything they need to succeed. Curtis greets newcomers to the space by saying “welcome to my home.”

“There’s plenty of high-end tech here, but it’s home,” Curtis said. “And I want it to be home for a community.”

Tapping into the teen perspective can be difficult, so the district hired Curtis, a self-proclaimed teen at heart and semi-professional gamer.

“That generation loves to grasp onto whatever’s new and upcoming,” Curtis said. “They’re very forwarddriven. Video games are exactly that.

Curtis said the project was ambitious, but it paid off.

“No one’s doing it to the extent we’re doing it,” Curtis said. “There really is no bar. That’s what happens when you walk into something so unprecedented. You push it and you push it and you push it until it pushes back.”

Providing esports opportunities has been a goal for parks and rec districts throughout the country, some implementing their own esports lounges.

Esports has grown into a multibilliondollar industry. In 2019, the industry reached the billion-dollar mark, according to Newzoo, a games and esports analytics group.

“Multi-generational,” to Lawful, means encouraging a mix of different residents in one place. The day the esports lounge opened, a group of about 20 seniors played bridge in the common area of the Hub. “This is no different,” Lawful said.

Valor edges Regis to reach title game Eagles get game-winning goal in third period

Valor Christian’s hockey team took advantage of a crazy bounce to notch a 2-1 semifinal victory over Regis Jesuit on March 5 on the ice at the Pepsi Center in the state high school hockey playoffs.

Top-seeded Valor (19-2-1) was scheduled to face Fort Collins (18-3-1) in the championship game March 10 at the Pepsi Center. The Lambkins advanced with a 3-2 win over Chaparral in the other semifinal contest on March 5.

Junior Evan Pahos got Valor’s gamewinning goal against Regis at the 2:01 mark of the third period when he shot the puck off the end boards to the side of the net, but the puck bounced back and hit off the skate of Raiders’ goalie Gage Bussey and deflected into the net. That pushed the Eagles into a 2-1 lead, which they held during a hectic remainder of the game.

“Based on what team you’re on, it was a crazy bounce,” said Valor coach George Gwozdecky. “The end boards here are really lively. Where both teams play, whether it’s the Ice Ranch or Family Sports, you don’t have those lively bounces like you do at a lot of professional rinks. You thank your lucky stars it was a fortunate bounce for us.”

Valor worked during its pregame skate on getting defensemen and goals to be able to adjust to bounces off the end wall.

Pahos was speechless after he saw the puck glance off Bussey’s skate and go into the net.

For some, March snow a tough foe

here was yet another snow storm late in the day March 1, although much lighter than previous ones in February, but it was enough to cover the fields and playing surfaces as the 2020 spring sports season for nine sports started practices on March 2.

Snow and moisture OVERTIME in Colorado can be expected to interrupt schedules for spring sports teams.

Boys swimmers don’t have to worry about the snow and some sports can clear the snow off venues easier, but baseball Jim Benton coaches spend as much time working to dry off diamonds as they do throwing batting practice.

Girls golf and tennis could scrimmage and begin competitons on March 5. Baseball, boys and girls lacrosse,

girls soccer, boys swimming and boys and girls track teams could schedule games and meets on March 12.

That is, of course, weather permitting.

One person who welcomes snow is 12-year-old Ranch View Middle School seventh-grader Sophia Gardner.

She is a skier and a member of the Loveland Ski Club. She recently qualified in the U14 division for the Rocky Central Junior Championships at Steamboat Springs Ski Resort between March 9-14.

Gardner has been skiing since she was 5 years old and trains Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at Loveland Ski Area. ”It’s pretty involved,” said Sophia’s father, Bill Gardner, who laughed when asked how many miles he has put on the car transporting his daughter to training and meets. ”Gosh, several thousand miles,” he said.

Basketball championships a go CHSAA commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green has been in contact with multiple state and local agencies concerning the coronavirus, and right now the CHSAA plans to hold the remaining state high school basketball championships.

She send out a statement to schools last week.

“Our plan is to conduct the championship events unless directed by state agencies and/or facility administration of cancellations,” BlandfordGreen stated.

Grassroots winner Mitch Savage, golf course superintendent at Englewood’s Broken Tee Golf Club, has been named a Grassroots Ambassador Leadership Award winner.

Free throws propel Falcons past Raiders Highlands Ranch will face Cherry Creek in the Final Four

All those sessions shooting free throws with her dad paid dividends for Highlands Ranch junior Payton Muma on March 6 at the Denver Coliseum.

The Falcons held a 45-44 lead over Continental League rival Regis Jesuit with 1:15 left in the game and then Muma sank six straight free throws in the Great Eight contest to advance to the semifinals of the Class 5A girls state high school basketball tournament with a 51-44 win over the Raiders.

Muma, who finished with a teamhigh 18 points, was confident when she toed the free throw line. The first two of her late-game trips to the charity stripe were for one-andone situations.

“I just thought these need to go in,” said Muma. “I practice with my dad at the gym on free throw shots.

So I had to make them. I go to the gym almost every night with my dad and I have to make 45-of-50 free throws.”

“We went to a four corners and tried to take a little air out of the ball,” said Highlands Ranch coach Caryn Jarocki, whose team improved to 21-5 and avenged an earlier 37-35 overtime loss to Regis.

“When you go to that strategy and slow it down you have to make the free throws, otherwise it is like a turnover.”

“I talked to her (Muma) this week about moving from being good to being great. The great players get to that free throw line and make those.

Great players don’t turn the ball over at the end. Great players finish the last shot, they just don’t take it.

I was hoping she could move from good to great, and we saw a little bit of that tonight.”

Girls basketball: South metro teams dominate playoffs STAFF REPORT

Four area teams won Great 8 games on March 5 at the Denver Coliseum to advance to the Final Four of the Class 5A girls state high school basketball championships.

Top-seeded Valor Christian (25-1) will face Grandview (23-3) in a 7 p.m. semifinal game, scheduled for March 12 at the Coliseum, while defending state champion Cherry Creek goes against Highlands Ranch and coach Caryn Jarocki at 8:30 p.m. in the second Final Four game.

Valor had five players score in double figures and the team connected on 59 percent of its field goal attempts in a 63-22 romp over Fossil Ridge in a Great 8 contest. Sophomore Raegan Beers led the way for the Eagles with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Kindyll Wetta also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Jenna Siebert and Karissa Lukasiewicz each had 12 points and Skyler Boylan added 10 points as the fifth player to score in double figures for the Eagles.

Lauren Betts, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds in Grandview’s 77-38 victory over Fruita Monument, and Cali Clark, a 6-3 senior, had 20 points and 11 rebounds in Cherry Creek’s 46-33 triumph over Ralston Valley.

Highlands Ranch and Regis Jesuit hooked up in the most competitive Great 8 contest, which saw the Falcons’ Payton Muma score the game’s final six points from the foul line in a 51-44 win over the Raiders.

Regis’ Avery Van Sickle took game scoring honors with 22 points, while Muma led the Falcons’ offense with 18 points.

In Sweet 16 games on March 3, Valor Christian overwhelmed Rangeview, 73-40, and Cherry Creek routed Centennial League foe Cherokee Trail, 72-32. Grandview eliminated Arapahoe, 55-25, Regis got past Broomfield, 58-51, and Highlands Ranch downed Fairview, 48-25.

Wetta and Siebert each scored 18 points for Valor, while Beers added 15 points and 13 rebounds. She now has 15 double-doubles for the season.

Cherry Creek took a 64-25 lead into the fourth quarter against Cherokee Trail and four players wound up in double figures, led by Clark, who had 17 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

“We came out with an OK start and in the second period we did not play well at all,” said Hirschfield.

“The third period is when we really stepped it up and played our best hockey.

“Ever since I started playing hockey my sophomore year at Valor, Regis has always been the game we circled on the calendar. It makes it so much better to beat them.”

Regis has won six state titles since 2008 and was playing in a semifinal game for the ninth time in 10 seasons. Valor has made two trips to the finals, including this year, in the past three seasons.

Valor went 2-0-1 against Regis during the CHSAA regular season, and including the fall league, the teams played six times this season.

“Every game we’ve played against them this year has been a one-goal difference, and there was the tie game,” said Gwozdecky.

A moment of silence was held before the game in honor of Cale Woodley, the son of Regis hockey coach Dan Woodley and a former Raiders player, who passed away Feb. 25.

Both Gwozdecky and Dan Woodley offered compliments about the other school’s programs that resulted in a close March 5 Frozen Four game.

“It was a hard-fought competitive game from the first face-off,” said Woodley. “The bounce that created the winning goal was unlucky for us, but we have been the recipient of good bounces in the past and I certainly can’t complain about the goal. I’m proud of my team. We played as hard and as fast as we could.

“That goal could have just as easily benefitted us, but I want my team to know there are great lessons to be learned from winning and losing, and the value of winning can never be measured unless you’ve experienced losing.”

Grandview, Valor advance to boys basketball semifinals Grandview will face the challenge of playing top-seeded Rangeview in the semifinals of the Class 5A boys high school basketball playoffs, while sixth-seeded Valor Christian (20-6) will play second-seeded Fairview.

The Grandview-Rangeview game is set for 7 p.m. March 13 at the Denver Coliseum to be followed at 8:30 p.m.by the Valor game.

Grandview earned its ticket to the Final Four with a 48-41 win over Regis Jesuit March 7 at the Coliseum.

Cole Bott and Roger Rosengarten each had 16 points as Valor shot 59 percent from the field in a 67-56 victory over George Washington.
