Jefferson County ended March by reaching another significant milestone in its effort to vaccinate every county resident against COVID-19. On March 31, Jefferson County Public Health Executive Director Dawn Comstock announced that over 40% of county residents had received at least one COVID-19 vaccination. By April 5, that number had grown to 43.1%. The numbers were even better for the age groups that are most vulnerable for the virus. As of April 5, 89.3% of Jeffco residents ages 70-and-over had received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 74% of residents ages 65-69 had received a dose. “I’m so happy to see that Jeffco residents are going out and getting those vaccines as soon as they can

find an appointment,” said Comstock in her weekly update about the state of the pandemic to Jeffco mayors and other leaders. “That is one of the main things our communities can do to try to end this pandemic.” Those levels of vaccination should already be paying significant dividends, Comstock said, as county data shows the test positivity rate for those 70-and-over started dropping dramatically about one month after that population first became eligible for the vaccine. “What we saw was just so impressive and so telling in that their test positivity rate just dropped off a cliff,” said Comstock. “And their test positivity rate is now 1% or lower.” But while such trends are only expected to accelerate as more and more people receive the vaccine, Comstock said she remains concerned about how the overall rate of new cases in the county have remain stagnant despite the accelerating rate of vaccination. The county’s test positivity rate also nearly spiked to 5%, another threshold that would trigger a move to Level Yellow, during that same period before declining some. However, Comstock warned that test positivity rate was becoming a less reliable measure of the amount of virus in the community as far fewer people are now getting tested than at other points in the pandemic. Comstock said the county believes the drop in testing is a result of people being less likely to attribute symptoms they are experiencing to COVID-19. “That’s one of the things that we’ll continue to try to communicate to our community that if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, even if you think it’s the seasonal allergies you experience every single year, go get tested just to be safe and confirm,” she said.

Jefferson County Public Health announced on April 5 that the countywide mask public health order would no longer mandate that masks be worn in public outdoor spaces. The county’s health order still required anyone in the county to wear a face covering when in indoor public spaces when 6 feet of distance cannot be maintained between non-household members. This new public health order on masking will remain in place until May 6 unless it is rescinded or amended by JCPH, or is superseded by a state order. “We are making good progress on COVID-19 vaccinations — especially among our high-risk priority populations — and folks are getting outside more where the risk of transmission is reduced,” said Dr. Dawn Comstock, Executive Director, JCPH. “While we are at a place where we can remove the outdoor mask requirements, we are asking our residents and visitors to continue wearing their masks indoors a bit longer so we can stay on the right path. After vaccination, masking and social distancing remain the most effective weapons we have against COVID-19 trans-

mission.” Per federal requirements, the public must continue to wear a mask when traveling via public transportation within the US. Although masking in outdoor public spaces is no longer required, JCPH is still recommending individuals with underlying health conditions or those who are engaged in high risk activities continue to wear a mask whenever around non-household people. “Indoor spaces pose a greater risk than outdoor spaces, but outdoor spaces are not entirely without risk,” Dr. Comstock said. “When you’re spending time outside, socializing with larger groups is a greater risk than socializing with smaller groups. Being near others who are shouting, singing or breathing heavily during physical activity is a greater risk. Manufactured vs. Modular vs. ‘Stick-Built’ Homes: Here Are My Thoughts

There has been some confusion in the real estate world over the term “manufactured” homes. Most recently the term has been applied to mobile homes — also referred to as single-wide or double-wide homes, which are transported fully finished to mobile home parks. But “manufactured” as I understand it can be applied to a home whose walls, trusses and other components are put together in a warehouse, then shipped on flatbed trailers to a construction site where they are assembled and installed on a standard concrete foundation. A “modular” home goes a step further, in that entire rooms might be assembled in a warehouse, transported to a work site and then assembled with other modules to make a complete house. The first home I bought in Colorado was a ranch with walk-out basement in Golden’s Mesa Meadows subdivision. Only after I had moved in did a neighbor recount how it was put together in a day or two. It was “manufactured” in Fort Morgan and delivered to Golden only after the concrete foundation was ready to receive it. Anyone looking at the home would think it was a “stick-built” home like the other houses in the neighborhood. When I bought it and when I later sold it, it wasn’t listed on the MLS as “manufactured,” because that would

have felt like a misrepresentation, given the type of home it was. The neighbor who explained that my home was actually build in Fort Morgan and assembled on site, explained how that fact made for a better home. The exterior walls were 2x6 construction (to withstand the rigors of shipment) and they were fully insulated on the factory floor rather than on-site, resulting in better quality control. It made sense to me. It also made me wonder why more homes aren’t built that way. I remember learning that an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity in Minnesota or Wisconsin constructs homes that way during the cold winter months — having volunteers assemble entire wall units in heated warehouses during cold spells, then assembling them on site later on. Even conventional stick-built homes use roof trusses that are made to order on factory floors and shipped to work sites on flatbed trailers, so why not have wall units made to order as well? From 1933 to 1940 Sears Roebuck sold mail-order “Kit Homes” that were “pre-cut and fitted.” A 2-story colonialstyle home called the “Martha Washington” was sold by Sears for $3,727. Other kit homes had names like the Cape Cod, the Ridgeland, the Franklin, the Dayton, and the Collingwood (see that kit’s ad above right). Many homes in Denver were built from such kits, but you’d never know it. Original owners of those homes are no longer around and the current owners of them probably have no idea. There are definite economies to building homes that are “pre-cut” and partially pre-assembled off-site. For one thing, the factory workers can work every day regardless of the weather and even in multiple shifts. They can be more productive in a heated warehouse. There will be more efficient use of materials and more recycling and reuse as well. Right now, the growing “tiny home” market is doing such construction and delivering modules or even entire homes to work sites, enjoying great economies in doing so. Two sheets of sheathing have 4 to 5 inches of polystyrene insulation between them. SIPs can replace walls built with wood framing and provide superior insulation. There is so much innovation happening in home construction, much of which can not only reduce construction costs but can result in better insulated homes.

As you probably know, not all licensed real estate agents are “Realtors.” To be a Realtor, one has to be a dues-paying member of a local Realtor association, which automatically makes the agent a member of the state Realtor association and the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Many low-producing real estate agents don’t want to cough up roughly $500 per year in Realtor dues, so they join a nonRealtor brokerage like HomeSmart Realty on Greenwood Village or Trelora Colorado in downtown Denver. Agents with those firms can’t call themselves “Realtors.” You’ve probably seen TV commercials by NAR saying “Make sure your agent is a Realtor.” Their current campaign has the theme, “That’s Who We R.” Both campaigns stress the point that only Realtors subscribe to the Realtor Code of Ethics. There is no code of ethics for non-Realtors. In fact, however, violations of the Code, such as failure to disclose negative information about a listing or contacting another agent’s client directly, are also violations of state licensing laws. To me, the greater

value of dealing with a Realtor like those of us at Golden Real Estate is our commitment to professionalism and to the industry, expressed in part by our willingness to pay those dues. NAR’s lobbying on behalf of property rights benefits agents as it does all property owners, and deserves our financial support.

With damage to the Lubahn Trail showing no sign of slowing, the Golden city council will consider a proposal that would involve spending at least $150,000 to restore and stabilize the trail so that it can remain open for recreation long-term. The trail, which was completed in the 1970s and provides access to South Table Mountain from central Golden, has been deemed “unsustainable” by Golden’s parks department as a result of erosion and other damage wrought to the trail and surrounding land by hikers shortcutting the trail’s switchbacks. There are also growing concerns about the impacts on residents that result from the number of cars parked on Belvedere Drive and other nearby roads on residents by those coming to hike on the Lubahn Trail and neighboring Olivine Trail, which was completed last year. Those and other issues led the city’s Parks, Recreation and Museums board to seek an assessment of the trail and recommendations about what could be done

about it from Jefferson County Open Space. While the city of Golden currently owns and manages the trail, an assessment was sought from JCOS because the agency possesses more extensive expertise when it comes to trail management and is responsible for managing and maintaining most of the surrounding trails on South Table Mountain, including the Olivine Trail. On March 23, JCOS officials presented their recommendations to the board, including the proposal to restore and enhance the trail by rerouting some sections and hardening eroded areas as needed. “After hearing this from you and going out on the trail, we are doing our best to try to retain and honor as much of the trail as possible through these recommendations but also helping address some of the challenges that have been mentioned,” said JCOS Deputy Director Hillary Merritt. According to Meritt, JCOS’ recommended course of action involves improving the lower section of the existing trail, including rerouting portions of it and hardening eroded areas as needed. would be closed to the public with fencing and other barriers. However, about 400 feet of new trail heading south from the closure spot would then be added. That section would provide connections to what Merritt described as “unauthorized sections” of trail. Those sections would connect to both the Olivine Trail, which hikers could take back to Golden as part of a loop, or to go further up the mesa via the Old Quarry Trail. JCOS would likely need to make additional improvements to the unauthorized sections. Making those outlined improvements would allow about 80% of the existing trail to be maintained while keeping the trail sustainable, Merritt said. Those physical changes would also be more effective if those physical changes were combined with new signage directing people to stay on the trail. According to JCOS, the restoration work would likely cost between $130,000 and $150,000 with the city looking at an additional $20,000-$25,000 for signage, fencing and bike racks. “I think that price is perfectly fine for this,” said PRAM board member Scott Feldman-Peabody. “We are talking about spending $1.5 million on soccer fields right now and no one seems to be up in arms about that so that seems like a reasonable price to me for the number of users.”

Future trail management If the Golden City Council votes to go forward with the restoration, it will also have to decide who will manage the trail going forward. While the trail is currently under city jurisdiction, JCOS Director Tom Hoby said the agency would be open to entering into an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the city where the city would pay JCOS to both maintain the trail and provide ranger services for it. Golden Parks and Recreation Director Rod Tarullo said the city’s park department does not have a preference for who maintains the trails, but said the department would need more resources to successfully keep maintaining the trail than it currently has. However, Tarullo said one advantage to JCOS taking over the trail is it would allow for their to be consistency with signage and other elements of the trail experience across South Table Mountain. “The possibility of getting an IGA with Jeffco has somewhat of an appeal just to make that consistency,” he said. “Citizens don’t care who owns it, they don’t care who maintains it unless they do a terrible job, they just want to have a good outdoor experience.” The PRAM board ultimately recommend that the city enter into an IGA with a duration of two or three years so Golden could see how JCOS does managing the trail. A date has not been set for the city council to review the PRAM board recommendation.

Jefferson County currently has 10 libraries. But if you live in and around Ken Caryl and other areas of South Jeffco, you don’t live very close to any of them. But that won’t be the case for much longer as planning is underway for the Jefferson County Public Library to bring a new destination

library to the southern portion of the county. That planning effort began in 2015, when Jeffco voters approved an increase to the maximum mill levy to restore and expand library services. Now, the library district is set to begin a new phase of that process that will seek to provide an answer to one of the most important questions that comes with opening a new library: where should it be located? To that end, the library district has launched a new online citizen survey to solicit input about where the library should be located. The survey, which can be accessed at

jcplsouthcountylibrary.com, asks residents to provide input on where they would like to see a library. It also asks residents about where they perform basic activities like going to school and shopping for groceries in an attempt to identify a location that would be convenient. There are also several picturebased questions that are intended to solicit feedback about aesthetic preferences for a new library. The launch of the survey comes a year after the effort to solicit input on the new library was paused as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We know the community has been waiting for a long time to share their opinions and perspectives about what a new destination Library in South Jefferson County looks like and what resources appeal to Jeffco residents, and we are

committed to designing a Library that meets the community’s needs,” said Donna Walker, JCPL executive director, in a press release. According to a fact posted on the JCPL website, the new library will serve a population residing east of the Conifer Library and south of the Columbine Library. In addition to the survey, JCPL is hosting several virtual community meetings for residents to provide further input into the location of the new library. A timeline states that once the community engagement process completes, JCPL estimates it will take 9-12 months to design the library followed by 3-6 months of permitting and 12-18 months of construction. Dozens of Jeffco residents recently got a reminder of just how problematic technology can be when a scheduled community meeting about a proposal to construct a wedding and event venue on a ranch in Golden Gate Canyon was beset by tech trouble. The community meeting, which the county requires anyone who wants to rezone a property to hold prior to submitting a formal rezoning application, was to provide the owners with an opportunity to present their proposal to the community and answer questions about it. But as the virtual meeting got underway, several residents called into it to report they were unable to access the Microsoft

Teams platform. Further disruption ensued as a recorded voice announced the entry and exit of every new participant, which became increasingly disruptive as more people continued to call in. As a result of those issues, which several participants reported prevented them from actually being able to see the presentation even as many were able to listen to it over the phone, Jeffco Planning and Zoning Director Chris O’Keefe said the county plans to require the owners of the ranch to hold a second community meeting. “Based on the feedback we received, it is clear that the information that needed to be conveyed was not conveyed,” said O’Keefe, in explaining the decision to require a second meeting. O’Keefe said it will be up to Carly and Tucker Wilde, the owners of the property which is known as Wilde Ranch, to set a new date for the meeting. However, the meeting won’t be able to happen for at least several weeks as the Wildes will have to comply with requirements

On March 30, Fairmount residents had their first opportunity to learn more about a proposal to rezone a five-acre agricultural property off Eldridge Street to allow for the construction of 20 new homes. It seemed that most of them were unhappy about what they heard. “I understand development,” said Kimberley Tilton, who lives nearby the site of the proposed development and voiced a sentiment that was echoed by many residents during the meeting. “However, this kind of density is absurd. It’s just absolutely absurd.” At the start of the hour-long meeting, Carlson Associates, Inc. developers Kent Carlson and Micah Dean provided more detail about their vision for the site, which calls for it to be divided into lots ranging from 5,000 to 9,000 feet in size for an overall density of four houses per acre. A mix of ranch and two-story homes with estimated starting prices of around $600,000 would be built on

the lots. However, Carlson Associates, Inc. first needs approval to rezone the site, which is currently zoned for agriculture and only allows one residential lot on the property. Dean said the company wants to rezone the site to a planned development zoning category that would allow residential development but limit the size of lots to 5,000-square-feet or greater. “We don’t want to allow 3,000-square-foot lots to go in here,” said Dean. “Because then with that you would be able to crank up the density ten-fold compared to this project.” But the many neighbors who spoke at the meeting said they find even the density proposed unacceptable and fear the impact such a development would have on what they described as their “semi-rural” community. “The area is set up to be semirural and this does not fit that at all,” said Tilton. “The reality is it doesn’t fit the neighborhood and there’s nothing about that density that would make anyone around here feel good.” At one point, Tilton asked Carlson and Dean “what they had to say about how the development could possibly benefit any of us?” Carlson responded that the proposed community would provide needed housing options for current

residents of the area who want to downsize to a lower maintenance property. He also said that the development would expand the housing stock in the area, which would put some downward pressure on the area’s high home prices. But many of the residents who participated in the meeting took issue with that response. “If we think that people need to find a downsize-able place in this neighborhood and that these homes are going to be affordable for that, I don’t buy it,” said another resident, who did not identify themself. After several neighbors took turns railing against the project’s high density, Jefferson County Planner Brittany Gada said that it would be her job to evaluate how compatible the proposed development is with the county’s recommendations for the property, which call for developments to be limited to 2.5 dwelling units per acre. The county commissioners would then take that evaluation into account when making a decision about the rezoning. “I do understand where you all are coming from and it is my job to write that up and do an analysis,” she said. Later, a man who identified himself as Kevin and said he has lived in the area for 50 years said he felt that residents understood the realities of development and would be open to a smaller development. “Let’s talk about something realistic here,” he said. “If you are going to develop it put four, five or even eight homes in there.” Carlson & Associates will have up to one year from the date of

the meeting to submit a formal rezoning application to the county, which would then need to be approved by the county commissioners. However, Carlson ended the meeting by suggesting that the proposal will likely be reconsidered in light of the feedback given by the neighbors during the meeting. “I’m not saying today I am going to turn around and do this plan,” he said. “There is a very good chance I am going to sit down with Micah and my brothers and we could very well amend this plan or even very well walk away. I am hearing you when you say that density is a big issue.”

I didn’t send any … not because of a purposeful or even conscious decision, but because the time slipped away before I could attend to what was important to me. This has been happening a lot lately. The ragged last few months have found me between jobs as well as in the midst of a household move, leaving me scattered and unsettled in my new home. I’ve made a list of what I need to do around here – everything from sorting the blue lids for those plastic food storage containers to setting up my entire workfrom-home office – a list that overwhelmed and discouraged me as it exploded into

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Can you spell BOONDOGGLE? Politicians are terrific! Terrific at naming bills that give the bills a positive spin to get attention and get passed. Don’t read the entire bill ... the title is enough! For example: USA PATRIOT ACT stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism. Who could be against that? Colorado has its own acronym, SAFE, which is Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act which “gives cannabis companies access to the banking system.” The spin! How about TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program)? They have us covered. How about the COVID Relief Plan dubbed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021? This bill is costing the American taxpayer 1.9 trillion. Jeff Galak estimates “If you lined up that much money in $20 dollar bills you’d have a line so long that you could wrap it around the entire planet about 7,400 times.” Of that money only 9% “goes to fund direct disease containment measures such as vaccines, testing and tracing, and other pub-

And while most of the remaining 91% does benefit the American taxpayer indirectly, how much is “political pork” that goes to bail out states that have irresponsibly overspent … or pet projects? Should the COVID Relief Bill have been named: Broad Official Order Named to Defer Our Own Good Generosity to Lamentable Enterprises? two columns on two separate pages of notebook paper. Then I thought maybe it would be easier to break these tasks into a room-by-room inventory. Yes, you guessed it … same list, more pages. It’s also always been my habit on Monday mornings to make a “Week of …” list, such as sending in change-of-address forms, making a dentist appointment or reaching out to friends. But, distressingly, I’ve recently ended up transferring many, if not most, of these items onto the following week’s list. Or the week after that. That’s why I’ve decided, finally, that I have to both get ahold of myself as well as let go of these mammoth lists. In this

spirit, I now begin each day with a decision about what I believe is realistic to accomplish on this day. I admit I was overly optimistic that first Monday – not many to-dos crossed off, and some marked for Tuesday or even later in the week. (I fudged that first Friday, though. I didn’t write anything down until later in the afternoon, when most items were already done and I could gleefully cross them off.) Several years ago, a colleague of mine complimented me on an event I had given, and he said some nice things about my ability to “multitask.” I thought that was a good thing. And it was intended as a good thing, and I suppose it was. But every year I go six weeks trying to eliminate the need to multitask, at least when I’m working at home. And, much to nobody’s surprise, it usually leads to a surge of productive activity. I won’t bore you with the details, but if you want an inkling, follow the links below to my new novel. We live in a society of too many minds. If it’s not the silly need to constantly see what people we don’t know are doing on social media, it’s the constant barrage of images and noise from our televisions or stereos, with frequent diversions into checking our email. What was once a nice way to stay in touch with distant friends through our computers, is now a ubiquitous obsession through our phones, which are always with us and always watching. But more important than the surge of productivity that comes from unplugging from a period of time, is the quiet that begins to make its way into my thoughts. And you know what happens when your thoughts are quiet? Of course you don’t, because nobody has quiet thoughts any more. C.S.Lewis was strangely prescient when, in

the satirical “Screwtape Letters,” he described Hell as the Place of Noise. When you are able to quiet your thoughts and calm your emotions, you are able to see and understand things you normally overlook, like hawks lazily circling overhead at dusk, or the solution to a sticky problem that’s been eluding you for weeks. When you are of “too many mind,” sticky problems begin to look insurmountable, and, worse, the perspective of understanding how that problem actually fits into the big picture evaporates like a Rockies lead at Coors Field. Is it any wonder that our children, who are constantly of “too many mind,” and have no perspective to begin with, begin to see all the noise in the world and in their thoughts as a personal, private Hell? The world is opening up again, and we’re starting to get some signature Colorado Spring days. My advice? Go outside. Listen to the quiet. Take the kids. And leave the phones behind. The “Solid South” that existed between the end of Reconstruction in 1877 and the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 was, for the Democrats of the time, central in advancing the interests of southern whites, particularly with regard to racial segregation and black civil rights. By 1900, southern Democrats had achieved this goal throughout the former Confederacy. This resulted in a one-party system wherein a candidate’s victory in Democratic primary elections guaranteed election to the office itself. White primaries were used to

Can’t we, too, as a larger society, recognize not only our trials, tragedies, and disputes but also prioritize what is possible and achievable, right here and now? There is

much each one of us can do today. And for my part, if laundry skips from today to tomorrow, or the next day, or the next, well, that’s a purposeful decision. What I can do instead today is use the time to respond to emails, return phone calls … and maybe send some texts.

Charles Edwin Reed Chuck was born into the throat of the Great Depression on March 3, 1930, in a tiny farm town named Kersey east of Greeley, Colorado. While just a toddler, his family traded their farm on Colorado’s plains for vacation cabins in Estes Park and moved there. The Reed Cottages in Estes Park were a fixture for vacationers from all over the world for many years. Chuck helped his parents, Otto and Agnes Reed, and brother, Irv, with that business including cleaning the cabins, cutting firewood and shoveling coal for the cabins’ stoves, and guiding vacationers on fishing and hiking trips in nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. As Chuck grew up in Estes, he became legendary for his athletic ability, work ethic and his prankster tendencies. He was an expert skier, a skill that he honed at the local ski hill in Estes and later taught his sons. He was an accomplished quarterback and track athlete for Estes Park High School and worked at Preston’s Garage in Estes from age 14. With money saved from that job as well as a track scholarship—he held records in pole vaulting for many years—he attended Bethany College in Kansas and later completed his degree in optometry at Pacific University in Portland, Oregon. After receiving his degree, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, an experience that he spoke of proudly in his later years, and spent his time as an eye doctor at the Heidelberg U.S. Army Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, the same hospital where legendary U.S. Army General George Patton died only a few years earlier. After his military service, Chuck Reed came back to his home state and started a very successful optometry practice on South Broadway in Denver.

He and his wife moved into their home on Lookout Mountain next to Denver Mountain Parks’ “Buffalo Pasture” and lived there until his death. He commuted every weekday and Saturdays to his practice in Denver. They had two sons, Charles Irwin, and Thomas Edwin, who were raised in that home and ran wild on Lookout Mountain and in the surrounding forests. Chuck was an uncommonly kind and generous man who was well known for small acts of kindness. After his retirement, Chuck made shrewd real estate investments in Denver and kept active as a business owner. He was also an expert carpenter who made wonderful furniture from fly-tying benches to tables. He loved to laugh with his friends and he and “Virg” were fast friends with other “mountain folk” such as Harvey and Helen Waters who lived in South Deer Creek Canyon west of Littleton. Chuck loved dogs, from his first dog, Spot, to his last one, Toby, a Great Dane-Lab mix that he called his “best dog ever.” As one might expect, by achieving the ripe age of 91, Chuck outlived almost all of his friends except his best friend, Lee Parker, who still lives on his ranch outside Wheatland, Wyoming. Other survivors include his beloved wife of more than 62 years, Virginia; his sons Chuck, of Golden, Colorado, and Tom of Harrison, Montana; his daughter-in-law Shauna Stephenson of Harrison, Montana, granddaughter Clara and grandson Otto; and “mock daughters” Cherie Waters Braun of Conifer and Nancy Waters Hammans of Loveland. Richard Keith Davison, 39, of Aurora, CO unexpectedly passed away on 3/10/2021. He was born in Aurora, CO to Ross and Frances Davison, their only child. He graduated from Concorde Career College in Nursing, and became an RN in 2014. Richard enjoyed hiking, spending time in the mountains with friends, and traveling. Richard is preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Richard and Phyllis Davison, his maternal grandparents, Gene and Sissy Dunn, and his Aunt Jackie Davison, who was also a

nurse. Richard leaves behind his parents, Ross and Frances Davison, his partner Anna Jamilano, Anna’s son’s, Bob and Patrick (Anna) Jamilano. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A private service was held March 20th at Olinger Crown Hill. f you’ve put on a few pounds during the pandemic, you’re not alone. And if you’ve only put on a few — consider yourself lucky. A study by the American Psychological Association (APA), conducted at the end of February 2021, found that 61% of American adults experienced undesired weight gain or loss since the pandemic began. More than 40% of those responding to the poll experienced weight gain they never intended. That 40% gained an average of 29 pounds. Median weight gain was 15 pounds. Ten percent of respondents said they gained more than 50 pounds — a staggering number in one year’s time. So, here we are. Spring is springing, vaccinations are happening, the weather is warming up and you want to lose some of those pandemic pounds. But where do you begin? In Colorado there’s no shortage of ways to keep fit, but even in a state consistently ranking near the top in physical well-being of its citizens, taking that first step along the path to fitness can be challenging. Allison Westfahl has been a fitness pro for almost 20 years. Currently, she’s the General Manager for Tru Fusion, a fitness studio that brings all the boutique disciplines — yoga, cycling, barre, pilates, bootcamp, boxing, TRX, meditation and more — together under one roof, and all in classes — no independent fitness floor. They started up last fall, a rough time to open a business, Westfahl said, but a time when it was much needed. “It became clear to us that it was more important than ever, during a pandemic, for people to have a place where they can take care of themselves physically, emotionally and mentally,” she said. “So, we opened in September to 25% restrictions, and our classes were full with a wait-

list by the end of the first month.” She said they’re still under size restrictions to keep everyone distanced and safe. A class that in a pre-pandemic world would have 75 participants, right now only accommodates around 23. Westfahl thinks the group dynamic you get in a class, along with instructors who are involved in their clients’ success, can help people stay accountable in their fitness quest. But for people just getting back into the groove, she thinks being kind to your body and moving forward slowly is key. “I’m hearing and seeing a lot of people just beating themselves up over putting on weight or not working out for the past year like they usually do — I see a lot of people scolding themselves for that — so, my biggest piece of advice would be to approach whatever happened over the past year with your fitness routine with grace and forgiveness,” she said. “None of us probably reached any fitness records over the past year, so just let that be in the rearview mirror and continue to move forward.”

The Biennial of the Americas - an organization headquartered in Denver that aims to develop collaboration and partnership across borders and highlight Colorado as a state that is deeply connected to the Americas - is leading the way with the newly-opened public submissions process for the “Americas COVID-19 Memorial.” “For us, the catalyst has always been how

to engage artists over what the Americas’ most pressing challenges are, and right now it’s recovery from this devastating pandemic,” said FloraJane DiRienzo, deputy director of Biennial of the Americas. “We know artists will be at the forefront of this effort, finding ways to help us heal and envision a future beyond this situation.” Submissions are open to individuals or collaborative groups of any age or nationality, who reside within the boundaries of the Americas (including Canada, the United States, Central and South America and the Caribbean). According to provided information, entries should “focus on exploration of how the artistic imagination

conceives a memorial to a contemporary tragedy that transcends national borders.” Submissions can include a 300-word narrative describing the work and any details about inspiration, materials used or additional context. Artwork will be accepted through May 31. She typically teaches early mornings, with class times that start between 5-8 a.m. plus a noon class for those late risers. Her clients, she says, run the gamut in age from 22 to 71, and she modifies routines for everyone. Her advice for people is to get a set of weights — nothing heavy, just something that will activate your muscles. A daily walk is also something she thinks will benefit those trying to get back in the swing of things — even 10 minutes per day. “Just start — is my advice,” she says. “I don’t care if you go for a walk, ride a spin bike or go to the park to play frisbee — just get yourself moving and start. Get those endorphins going and I guarantee you will do more and more every day.”

Doherty said in her experience, weight gain can give people a sense of frustration and that can lead to procrastination. She also wants people to be realistic with their expectations about dropping those pounds, because they typically go on a lot faster than they come off. And in her opinion, adding some weights to your cardio routine will help your body burn fat more quickly than cardio alone. Doherty, also an M.D., is happy to offer nutrition information to her clients if they ask. She thinks every diet works — the question is, which diet works for you? “There are so many (diet) options out there. You just have to figure out what works for your daily lifestyle, and what you can actually stick with,” she says. Even though we’ve had a similar experience, it’s also been unique to each of us. I hope the works are as diverse as the Americas.” Another feature of the project will be free virtual events - mainly “Coffee Chats” - that will tackle a variety of topics, including grief and social memory. The final result of all this effort will feature the contributions of the 20 professional artists and the public submissions on a virtual exhibition on the Biennial’s website. That exhibit will go live in June, and in August the organization will announce awards for both professional and public artists. Viewers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite public work, and the

She agrees with Westfahl that finding something you love doing is paramount. “There are so many different things you can do, and so many ways to move your body — with people, alone, in classes, over Zoom, hopefully soon in person, sports, walking — and all of them are good,” she says. “And for any length of time is good.” Conzemius’ second piece of advice is “Everything counts.” She says 150 minutes of exercise per week is the standard, but she would put those rules aside for people just starting out or starting over. “Five minutes of stretching or a 20-minute walk — it

Even things like playing with your kids, mopping the floor or gardening can be really beneficial for our bodies.” Her third piece of advice is to celebrate. “Celebrate your successes. People often focus on what they didn’t do, as opposed to what they did do,” she says. “Be very intentional about celebrating your wins, however small. Pat yourself on the back. Wink at yourself in the mirror. Tell somebody what you did, because then your brain will remember it and get that signal and want to do it again, and it builds motivation.” She said it’s important to talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend — with encouragement and support — not unhealthy criticism. It’s clear from chatting with these three local fitness pros that being kind to yourself and starting slow, but starting soon, will help you ease back into prepandemic shape, or maybe even better.

he other day I got a text message from a real estate agent. At least I think that’s what he was. Some guy texting me out of the blue with a really friendly sounding message, like I knew him, asking if I was interested in selling my house. He was the third or fourth person sending me similar messages just within a week. Usually I just don’t bother answering and block the number. But, last week I was just getting a little tired of these messages from strangers bombarding my phone. So, I sent him back a message. I said “Sure…I am taking offers over $10,000,000.” Now, I live in an ordinary house right in the middle of Golden so you know I was being facetious here but the guy answers back with “OK, would you mind me asking how you came up with that number?” How I came up with that number? I sent him back another flippant response and topped it off with telling him to take me off his list, but that simple moment got me thinking. How did I come up with that number? Well, in a nutshell, I just love living in Golden, I really like my house and neighbors and have absolutely no desire to move anywhere else. This is a great place to live. So, yeah, it would probably take about $9,500,000 to persuade me to just look for another house down the same street and hassle with moving everything. I’m not going anywhere. Yes, there is the atmosphere of our little town, the access to the mountains

and the city and stuff like that, but it’s also about how our town operates and the people who work for the City of Golden. I know our city offices have been operating under some restrictions for the last year, but if you have even dropped in there to pay a bill or something, you know it’s a lot different that some of our neighboring cities. Everybody is really friendly, they act like they know you and make you feel at home rather than one of a hundred strangers they have to deal with every day. But is goes beyond that. Just remember what your street looked like the day after the last couple of snowstorms we had. It was plowed. Now, that doesn’t sound like a big deal until you drive into Denver and see what their streets looked like for a week. If you have a problem, you call the City and they will transfer you to an actual person who will help you, not just some generic three digit number that goes to a central dispatcher who puts your name on an endless waiting list for a call back that never comes. I’m telling you all of this because I want to draw your attention to some of the great things our City Government has to offer this spring and don’t want you to miss them. First off, your health and safety is one of their prime considerations and they have started a new program called the Golden Safety Academy, put forth by the Police and Fire departments. They have a series of monthly classes that you can join virtually. The next

one is on Wednesday, April 14 at 6p.m. and will cover animal safety. Some of the other upcoming topics include Fire Safety, Motor Vehicle Theft/Trespass Prevention, Bicycle Safety, Traffic and Defensive driving plus a lot more. March was a busy month for longtime Wheat Ridge resident Edna Wagner. On March 19, she celebrated her 100th birthday at a family party in Arvada. There was even a red carpet for her to walk in on, her daughter said. Then, just a few days later, Wagner took a trip up to one of her favorite places, Blackhawk, to spend

the day at the Monarch Casino. “They say they would like to buy me a drink and up popped my granddaughter who said ‘give her a beer,’” said Edna. “And I said ‘no, I don’t think so.’ I didn’t want to start dancing around.” But while Wagner didn’t feel like getting too wild on that particular day, the moment was nonetheless a testament to the enduring nature of the sense of humor and love of life that have carried Edna into her 101st year. “I think I was the one that got all the genes in my family,” she said. “All of them died, and I’m still here.” SEE WAGNER, P19

Edna’s story began in Victoria, Kansas, where she helped raise her seven younger siblings. That was also where she married her high school sweetheart, Paul Wagner, and started her family before moving to Wheat Ridge in 1962. They came to Colorado, a place she had long loved, after one of her sons developed asthma that could be better treated here. “When I was 16-years-old, my parents brought us out here on vacation and when we drove around, I was just looking at everything and I said `I am going to live there someday,’” Edna said. “And I did.” The couple raised their kids on West 38th Avenue before moving to Edna’s current home on Teller Street, where she continues to live with her oldest daughter, Sharon. “My mom never has steered me wrong in everything,” said Sharon. “When I grew up, she saw it to it that I got to church and made my first communion.” Following Paul’s death in 1982, she enjoyed many trips to such places as Branson and Las Vegas (her favorite destination) with her siblings and their spouses. “I had too much fun,” said Edna of why she never remarried. “My brother was always looking for a guy for a me and he would say ‘there’s one on the corner.’ And I would say ‘yeah, but I don’t want anybody.’” But while Edna has always

looked to embrace the joyful side of life, she has also faced her share of challenges, too. World War II broke out just as prepared to marry Paul, and she would spend most of the next two years not knowing where he was at as he served overseas. In those days, the family also sometimes didn’t have enough to eat. “Paul wrote a letter to his dad and said ‘we are so hungry for meat’ and so he sent us a big thing of pork and wrapped it up really good but still some mice had gotten in and eaten around the corners,” said Edna. “But we were so hungry for the meat we just cut everything off and ate it.” She also isn’t too worried about COVID-19, given the number of illnesses she’s both seen and experienced in her life. “I had the measles, the mumps, the chicken pox, and then all of a sudden diphtheria came to town so we had to go out of school for a few weeks,” she said. “The first time I was ever struck by a needle was when polio came. But our parents took care of us.” In addition to bingo games and trips to the casino, Edna continues to enjoy cooking. “Every time we come over she’s got to cook us lunch,” said her granddaughter, Amy Leifheit, who visits Edna about once a week. However, it is her faith and family that she said ultimately matter most and keep her going. “They’re all so good to me,” Edna said of her family. “Because you’re good to us,” replied Leifheit.

When Penn Burris and Jennifer Malone opened Back Alley Donuts in Prospector’s Alley at the end of March, they didn’t necessarily expect business to get off to a booming start. After all, the shop’s location in the alley east of Washington Avenue doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic and the pair also didn’t do much to publicize opening day beyond letting a few friends and family know about it. But when they opened the shop’s doors on March 24, people started coming. And so far, they haven’t stopped. “The first day we sold out in a couple hours and then the second day we sold out in one hour,” said Malone. “We were just floored.” Located in the alley between 13th and 12th Streets, the small Back Alley Donuts space has seen its share of failed businesses over the years. But Penn and Malone, who also own the Blue Moose Trading Company and Golden Sweets on the same block and originally purchased the space for storage, said they felt the right “destination” business could succeed in there. After the pandemic hit, they decided to give doughnuts a shot and reached out to Gabrielle Henning and Michael Milton about sourcing donuts from them. Henning and Milton are a Denver couple that launched a doughnut business

Pandemic Doughnuts has since expanded to a commercial kitchen in the Five Points neighborhood of Denver and that’s where a team cranks out an ever-changing array of donuts ranging from staples like Cinnamon Sugar to more eclectic varieties such as Key Lime Pie. Now, with the opening of Back Alley Doughnuts, hundreds of doughnuts are loaded up and transported to Golden before 7 a.m., when the shop opens to sell them out of its colorful case. “These are not your run-of-themill doughnuts,” said Malone. “It’s really an art and they hand glaze and decorate the donuts every morning.” Beyond the doughnuts, which rotate based on the whims of the kitchen’s pastry chef, Pandemic Donuts offers a small beverage menu,

including coffee from Golden’s Pangea Coffee Roasters. There is also a breakfast sandwich as well as a selection of gluten-free doughnuts. But don’t expect any fancy espresso drinks, Burris said the couple’s goal is to keep things simple without competing with Golden’s plentiful local shops. “We’re trying to do just good quality drip coffee and keep it cheap,” he said. “But I can recommend several great places in Golden to go get a latte.” The small shop further embraces simplicity by eschewing offering seating in favor of a simple “grab and go” concept. However, Malone says customers are encouraged to enjoy their donuts at the tables around the corner on Washington Avenue. While Burris and Malone have owned businesses in Golden for nearly a decade, starting their own

doughnut shop has brought new challenges, “It’s been a learning curve because I didn’t know anything about doughnuts and the varieties and how they are made,” said Burris. “And I had to get more of an idea about coffee because in the ice cream shop we just do a generic coffee but it’s a much more integral part of a doughnut shop.” It’s also been exciting, Malone said, to open a business that is frequented mostly by locals rather than tourists. “The locals do come into the ice cream shop and Blue Moose,” she said. “But here it’s been all locals and that’s been really fun for us.” The opening of Back Alley Doughnuts heralds the arrival of a competitive donut scene in Golden: another doughnut shop called Mountain Donuts is set to open soon on East Street off of South Golden Road.

ARVADA — There was no break March 30 for Lakewood and Ralston Valley girls volleyball teams despite Jeffco Public Schools being on Spring Break last week. The Tigers hit the road to face the Mustangs — No. 11 in last week’s CHSAANow. com Class 5A volleyball rankings — in a key early 5A Jeffco League match-up. Ralston Valley remained undefeated on the season with a 3-1 victory over Lakewood (3-2, 1-1 in league). “We weren’t really worried about it too much,” Ralston Valley senior Taylor Scherff said of playing a conference game during Jeffco’s Spring Break. “It has been a weird year and we’ve adapted over our club seasons. We are just really grateful to come in here, play our game and play together.” It was a bit of a rough start for the Mustangs (6-0, 2-0). The Tigers came out strong to take a 25-21 victory in the opening set. Lakewood seniors Morgan Steck and Jada Hall led the way for Lakewood. The Tigers do have a couple of quality non-league victories under their belts already this season. Lakewood grabbed victories over Highlands Ranch and Broomfield, teams both that have been ranked in the top-15 of the CHSAANow.com Class 5A rankings. “This team plays really well when their backs are up against the wall,” Ralston Valley coach Ashley Ahlman -said of her Mustangs. “The

first set going the way it did wasn’t necessarily a bad thing for us. It kind of gave us a wake-up call.” It was all Ralston Valley in the final three sets. The Mustangs took a trio of 25-17 victories to stay undefeated on the season. While Scherff did a lot of damage offensively with her spikes from the outside, seniors Jamie Dorczuk, Zoe Grolnic and Gabi Coombs, along with juniors Morgan McChesney, Jordan Wisner and Emerson Reinke all played big roles in the win. “We’ve got a pretty talented team with it comes to a spread-out offense,” Ahlman said. “We’ve got a phenomenal setter (Reinke) that can put the ball in anyone’s hands. We’ve been focusing on playing for each other. This is the first time that we have really seen that happen. I’m more proud of that then anything.” Ralston Valley is attempting to end Valor Christian’s dominance in 5A Jeffco since the Eagles joined the conference for the 2018 season. Valor has won back-toback league titles in 2018 and 2019, along with winning the 5A state title in 2018 and being state runner-up in 2019. “Valor has been the reigning champs of this league, but we feel like we are ready,” Scherff said. Valor (3-1, 2-1) already has a league loss on the season with Chatfield (1-1, 1-0) defeating the Eagles in a conference opener. Ralston Valley has three games this week, including a huge showdown a home against the Chargers on Thursday

Luncheons resume for Rocky Flats retirees Advocacy group hosts first in-person meeting since COVID-19 pandemic hit

knit group of former colleagues, many of whom worked in secrecy for years at Rocky Flats and experienced serious health issues over the years. The March 31 meeting and the next scheduled luncheon - set for April 20, also at the American Legion Post 161 - limited attendance due to COVID-19 precautions. Lori Shanks, a benefits specialist with Nuclear Care Partners, said that the luncheons create a social outlet for people who have deep, longstanding relationships with each other. “They’re kind of unsung heroes,” said Shanks. “These people worked at Rocky Flats from as early as 1952 in some cases. So, there’s a broad range of comradery with this group and they recognize each other because most of them started in one part of plant and moved around three or four or gives times throughout their time there. “A lot of people worked out there 30 to 40 years,” Shanks continued,

“It was a good job back then.” Shanks said that Nuclear Cares Partners attempted to hold virtual meetings when COVID-19 health safety protocols suspended in-person luncheons but did not have much success because most of the Rocky Flats retirees are seniors who have trouble navigating computers. For the same reason, many of the retirees have had trouble accessing their benefits over the past year. Shanks said that she has been calling patients and members of Nuclear Care Partner’s mailing list individually and checking in on them, as well as helping them to register for the COVID-19 vaccine. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, Shanks said that

2020 was still a productive year for Nuclear Care Partners, as they were still able to conduct wellness visits. “Some people come to the same events over and over again,” said Shanks, “I know all of these people really well. He’s a new guy. I connecvted with him over COVID. So, I got to connect with him over COVID because he typically doesn’t come to the events. I helped him get set up with the screening program over the phone and now he feels like he knows me. So, it’s nice to put a face to the name. “Everybody came here to see each other,” Shanks continued. “They’re like `we’ve got to get back to some normalcy, but still be safe.” Nuclear Care Partner’s resources are available to anyone who worked at the Rocky Flats Plant. The plant employed 52,000

employees with badges and about 8,000 additional personnel from its inception in 1952 to its closure in 1992. Laura Shultz, a retired Rocky Flats worker who has battled cancer, said that the closeness felt in this community of retirees has had a devastating bent lately, with many of the retired workers passing away in recent years. “We are a family,” said Schultz, “we’ve been a family for several generations, and we lose friends every week. About two months ago we lost a married couple. And these are not strangers on the street, these are our best friends, and we are losing people all the time. And nobody knows about it.” The next Nuclear Care Partners luncheon will be April 20, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion Post 161 located at 6230 West 60th Ave, Arvada.
