Moo-ving new murals in downtown Golden Color and character added to business walls thanks to three artists BY PAUL ALBANI-BURGIO PALBANIBURGIO@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Bob’s Atomic Burgers has long been one of the most colorful and quirky restaurants in Golden. Now, its home on Ford Street finally has the exterior to match that reputation. That’s thanks to Loveland artist Becky Hawley, who spent multiple days earlier this month painting a mural of a cow being abducted by a flying saucer filled with aliens. “My whole idea is that it would be a selfie station,” said Hawley of her desire to see people pose in front of the mural, which is meant to convey Bob’s funky vibe, for photos. Hawley’s mural, now complete, is actually one of three new murals to

go up around downtown Golden. The new murals were paid for through a partnership between Golden’s Public Art Commission and the Golden Downtown Development Authority, which held a contest to select the three muralists. “They decided they wanted to expand to have a larger variety of art styles and subject matters reflected in the public art,” said Robin Flesichman, Golden’s Economic Development Coordinator. “Most of the existing murals in Golden were paid for by private property owners.” Among the new murals is an image of an iconic wild horse named Picasso that is being painted by artist Christina Lo’ren Morrison on the side of the National Employment Law Institute building at 11th Street and Washington Avenue. According to a statement from Visit Golden, the mural is based on a photo of Picasso taken by photographer Scott Wilson in the Sand Wash Basin in northwest Colorado. Picasso became known for his flowing mane,

Morrison became intrigued with the photo after coming across it earlier this year. “I was enraptured: there are some photos that when I see them, they seem to call out to me to paint them,” she said to Visit Golden. “This photo was like that.” When Morrison reached out to Wilson about painting the photo, he agreed on the condition that a portion of the budget for the mural go to the Sand Wash Basin Horse Advocate Team, a group that raises awareness about Colorado’s wild mustangs.

Jefferson County Public Health issued a new public health order on Oct. 29, intended to slow the increasing spread of COVID-19 in the county and prevent the state from moving the county to Safer-at-Home Level 3 on its COVID-19 dial. The new order, Public Health Order 20-009, limits gatherings in both public and private settings. Such gatherings have been implicated in the county’s recent spike in cases. The order limits outdoor events to no more than 75 people, and indoor events to no more than 25 within usable space as determined using a social distancing calculator on the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s website. Under the order, events may no longer have more than one room, designated activity or area. Prior to the order, indoor venues were allowed up to 100 people per indoor room and 175 per outdoor activity provided social distancing could be maintained, with venues able to apply to include multiple indoor rooms or outdoor activities within one venue. The order also requires that all restaurants, bars, breweries and similar venues cease selling alcohol at 10 p.m. Spectators will also no longer SEE COUNTY, P2
