Parking issue shifts into another gear City council approves new parking system in Golden By Christy Steadman csteadman@coloradocommunitymedia.com Parking in downtown Golden will be a little different come the beginning of the year. On July 28, Golden City Council voted to implement a new parking system in downtown Golden. To learn more about parking in Golden as a resident or visitor, contact the city’s parking office at 303-277-8799 or Parking@cityofgolden.net. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. What to know about Golden’s new downtown parking system The new parking system takes effect

Jan. 1. Areas affected by the new system are divided into zones. The zones are as follows: the neighborhood north of Colorado School of Mines, the neighborhoods south and east of Colorado School of Mines and the downtown core. Parking will be regulated — permit, free or paid — year-round from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Golden Police Department will have automated equipment that recognizes vehicles with current permits. A short-term advisory committee will be established to assess implementation issues and refinements of the new parking system. The committee will include a downtown resident, two representatives of downtown businesses, two Colorado School of Mines student and a Colorado School of Mines faculty or staff member, and a representative from each of the neighborhood zones. The committee will

be supported by City of Golden staff and the Colorado School of Mines parking management team. Visiting the downtown area Free parking will be available for two hours. Visitors that need longer than a two-hour period will be able to purchase additional time by registering a vehicle license plate at a nearby pay station kiosk or a phone application. Initial rate for extended parking time will be $2 per additional hour or $8 per day. Golden City Council also gave direction to install signage in front of the historic post office, 619 12th St., to allow the use of two spaces for 15-minute free parking from 8 a.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday for quick trips into the post office.

WHERE: Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 W. 6th Ave., Golden COST: Gate admission is $5 per adult. Children 12 years of age and under are free. Special events require an additional ticket purchase, which includes gate admission. Although gate admission and special event tickets may be purchased at the door, Friday and Saturday special events are expected to sell out, so it is recommended to buy in advance.
