hen Carl Eiberger received a knock on the door of his Applewood home in late 1974, he never could have imagined how much the trajectory of his life was about to change. After all, the person standing there was just one of his neighbors, Betty McFerren. McFerren knew of his reputation as a lawyer and was hoping he could bring his expertise to the effort to oppose a plan to build a massive aggregate rock mine that would SEE EIBERGER, P12

A little over two years after the Golden City Council took the dramatic step of instituting a temporary moratorium on new multifamily construction, it will look at doing so again. On June 7, the Golden City Council instructed city manager Jason Slowinski to have city staff draft an ordinance for a moratorium on multifamily construction in certain older residential neighborhoods until the city can adopt new zoning codes governing where and how multifamily construction can happen in Golden. The moratorium would impact only the city’s R-2 and R-3 zone districts — residential neighborhoods that are zoned to allow multifamily construction. The city’s largest area of the city to be zoned R-2, a classification that allows up to four residential units on a lot depending on its size, is located directly north of Highway 58 in central Golden. The largest R-3 district, a classification that allows multiple units on a lot provided that the lot is at least 10,500 square feet and includes at least 2,100 square feet per unit, is located west of Washington Avenue. However, smaller R-2 and R-3 districts are spread throughout the city. SEE COUNCIL, P6
