Golden Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors

G O L D E N C H A M B E R .O R G

Golden Chamber’s Ambassadors are members who volunteer their time to provide a crucial link between the Chamber and its members. They help to ensure that all members receive the maximum benefit from their investment. Ambassadors are at the core of the community’s business activities. Their primary responsibilities are to assist with welcoming new members, member retention efforts, and recruiting new members. Our Ambassadors enjoy the rewards of making new contacts, strengthening relationships, and accessing a wealth of information and resources. The Golden Ambassadors invites you to join us in being some of the most active members in our local business community. Ambassadors have a lot of fun interacting with the community and building business involvement as they

host the annual Taste of Golden event and represent the Golden Chamber at Ribbon Cuttings, Grand Openings, member networking events, and the monthly V.I.B.E.@5.

2020 Ambassador Committee Chair We would like to welcome Michael Herman, President of Golden Wealth Solutions, as our 2020 Ambassador Chair. Michael joined the Golden Chamber in 2012 and has been an active Ambassador ever since. Michael is a financial service professional of over 30 years, specializing in financial and retirement planning. He is actively engaged in many business and service groups and is retired from the Wheat Ridge Volunteer Fire Department after 20 years of service.

board of directors A message from the

chairman

2020 Chairman of the Greater Golden Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors

Dean Valdez Owner downtown Golden commercial real estate, Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse, Miners Saloon, Ace Liquor

I am a Colorado native and have lived in Golden for the last 21 years. I have seen Golden grow and thrive and become what many believe is the best community in the state. My wife, Aimee, and I invested in Golden real estate and have created and developed downtown Golden businesses. Thus, we have a vested interest in the economic vitality of our town. That’s one of the reasons I joined the Chamber Board of Directors in January 2019 and why I now look forward to leading the organization with one goal in mind; to provide value to our members by focusing on business advocacy. Here’s what that looks like: enhanced business networking, better professional development opportunities, and more involvement in business policy decisions. We will also strive to bring our members cost-saving business-tobusiness deals.

In 2019 the Chamber’s financial position improved significantly and several board positions opened up. In 2020 we will have new board members and additional staff to support the objectives mentioned above. We will continue our participation in key community events such as the Golden Fine Arts Festival and the Chili Cook-off, however, our staff ’s focus will shift to business advocacy in order to lay the foundation and direction for the coming years. 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the Golden Chamber of Commerce and it will coincide with a new and focused direction. Members will gain an energetic partner dedicated to helping you succeed, and we will work hard to provide value to members and bring our business community together through a shared voice and common goals. We look forward to working with you to create an even better business climate in Golden. If you have ideas for the Chamber to consider, please email me at info@goldenchamber.org with Golden Chamber Ideas in the subject line.

farmers market May 30 – October 3, 2020 (excluding July 25) Historic Downtown Golden The Farmers Market supports the Chamber’s mission by “...putting forth efforts to enhance the quality of life for the community at large”. Founded in 2001, the Golden Farmers Market was designed by the Chamber as a means of bringing people to downtown Golden. The Market was originally held off Washington Avenue where the parking structure now resides. In 2006 the Chamber moved their Market to the parking lot next to the Golden Library where it has been presented for the past 13 years. The Golden Farmers Market is an assembly of vendors in an outdoor public market style, offering produce, food products, prepared cuisine, beverages, vendors, promotional opportunities, entertainment, and other related events as a means of supporting our members, community, city, and a healthy lifestyle.

To address this issue, and to help build food security in Golden, the Golden Farmers Market accepts SNAP benefits and Double Up Food Bucks. Double Up Food Bucks allows SNAP shoppers to bring home more fresh fruits and vegetables. When customers spend $1 on any SNAP eligible item (meat, bread, eggs, milk, etc.), they receive $1 for Colorado grown, fresh fruits and vegetables. It is a $1:$1 match so if you spend $5, you get $5. If you spend $10, you get $10, up to $20 every week at our market. Community Showcase Booths The Chamber provides two free booth spaces, each Saturday, for Golden Chamber member businesses and nonprofit organizations to showcase their business. These Showcase booths are in direct support of the Chamber’s Mission, “… supporting our chamber members, collaborating with businesses, city, county, state and community resources…”. Golden Farmers Market is presented by the Golden Chamber of Commerce and managed and operated weekly by farmers market professionals. For more information, go to: GoldenChamber.org/farmersmarket

G O L D E N C H A M B E R .O R G

In 2017 our Golden Farmers Market became SNAP Certified. Many Coloradans rely on food assistance programs like SNAP, Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (formerly known as food stamps), which serves more than 485,000 Coloradans a month. However, most SNAP recipients receive $1.41 per meal or $4.23 per day in benefits, making it a challenge to have

enough money to buy food for the whole month.

OLDE GOLDEN

christmas December, 2020

Historic Downtown Golden In 1922 Golden had its first public Christmas lighting display. Lights were not draped on all the trees, but only one tree, and it was a special one. It was Golden’s first community Christmas tree provided by the Golden Fire Department, Golden Kiwanis, and the Golden Chamber of Commerce.

It was in 1972 that Golden Landmarks included Victorian Christmas elements which took place in and around the Astor House. Through the years Golden began to hang lights on the light posts, including garland and lanterns which

lit up at night. In 1987 Golden began lighting trees along Clear Creek and it was this year that Golden Victorian Christmas was folded in to the “Spirit of Christmas”, which then was called Olde Golden Christmas, a large celebration presented by the Golden Chamber of Commerce. Olde Golden Christmas has now evolved into an event involving not only the Golden Chamber of Commerce, but also the City of Golden, downtown merchants and restaurants, Visit Golden, the Golden Visitors and Information Center, the Golden Fire Department and many more. Events range from weekly Saturday Parades, to opportunities to meet Santa, to Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides, Hay Rides, dog-cart rides, and many other festivities. Golden’s Candlelight Walk, was founded in 1988. This annual procession of candle holders along Washington Avenue has become a long-standing tradition for our community. The Candlelight Walk is a beautiful and truly unique event that brings the Golden community together to sing carols, “Light the Lights” of Golden with the Mayor, stroll along the lighted creek path, enjoy hot cider and roasted chestnuts, and see Santa. Golden’s Candlelight Walk marks the beginning of Olde Golden Christmas Parades and Holiday Activities.

In 1949 Santa Claus and his Reindeer first landed atop the Welcome Arch and have been a part of Golden’s holiday display ever since. They were designed by the arch’s designer, Paul Reeves, as a part of Golden’s “Spirit of Christmas” program presented by the Golden Chamber of Commerce, of which Reeves was chairman of the board. Santa and his Reindeer are officially recognized as a historic display for Golden. “Spirit of Christmas” featured a huge get-together downtown, turning Washington Avenue into Santa Claus Lane, and lighting it in a beautiful artistic manner befitting the occasion. Christmas carols were led by students and directed by Earle Johnson, and much more. It was a highly enjoyed community Christmas celebration.

City of Golden The City of Golden employs a unique partnership of economic development programs to benefit the entire community. In addition to working with the Golden Chamber of Commerce, the Jefferson County Economic Development Council, and other municipalities, Golden’s Department of Community and Economic Development coordinates several programs to fulfill our Golden Vision 2030 goals and community values (see www.cityofgolden. net for details on Golden Vision and the following): ❚ Economic Development staff assist companies seeking to expand or locate in Golden with site selection information, entitlements, and building and zoning processes. ❚ The Golden Economic Development Commission (EDComm) encourages growth in the primary employment sector as well as in the small business/start-up sectors. In addition, EDComm supports education and workforce development programs.

❚ The Golden Urban Renewal Authority (GURA) focuses on three eligible areas in the City – West Colfax, the Central Neighborhoods, and 8th Street – where redevelopment assistance is needed. ❚ The Golden Downtown Development Authority concentrates on downtown redevelopment and supports downtown businesses through a variety of business assistance and infrastructure programs. ❚ Visit Golden, our merchant-based community marketing program, tells the Golden story to local residents, visitors, and the media, substantially increasing visitation and traffic to events, cultural attractions, and individual retailers.

Milestone birthdays are especially fun to celebrate, and that’s certainly true for the Golden Chamber of Commerce. “Just being 100 years old says we’re doing something right,” said Dr. Kelley Jackson Condon, a Golden resident and owner of Table Mountain Vision. She joined the chamber in 1998.

“If you want to know what’s going on in Golden, join the chamber,” Condon said. “The chamber wants all businesses in Golden to be as successful as possible.” The Golden Chamber promotes businesses by offering ribbon cuttings and grand openings for new businesses, and a variety of member networking and social events. “Chamber members have the opportunity to meet all the other business owners in town, as well as residents and volunteers,” Condon said. “When you’re in a smaller town, joining the chamber is the best way to market your business.”

Happy 100th anniversary to the Golden Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to chamber members and small businesses for your contributions to the Golden community, which is a part of Colorado’s rich history and our vibrant future.

Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2020, the Golden chamber exists to “promote the economic environment of the Greater Golden area,” states its website. As of November 2019, the chamber has about 375 members, ranging from small businesses to large corporations. A number of religious institutions, nonprofits, local service clubs and community organizations are also members.

People enjoy being involved with the chamber, said Carol Ann Bowles who has worked for the chamber in a variety of different roles since 1992. “When you live here or you work here, you care about your community,” Bowles said. “The best thing to success is

The Golden Chamber is no different. Along with its member events, the chamber puts on wildly-popular annual community events such as the Taste of Golden, which highlights local restaurants, breweries and distilleries; and the PAGE 23 

These events offer the greater community an opportunity to get involved through volunteerism, Bowles said, adding that volunteers range from retired residents to Colorado School of Mines students and everybody in between.

Happy Birthday to the Golden Chamber of Commerce! Thank you for ongoing commitment and service to Golden’s business community and the economic vitality of our community. Wishing you all the best in your next 100 years.

— Rep. Ed Perlmutter

Through its various committees, the Golden Chamber offers its members an opportunity to discuss and collaborate on issues important to the economic vitality of the community. For example, the Community Development Committee meets monthly and includes people representing corporate, government, city and educational entities. PAGE 25 

“When members volunteer their time, energy and ideas, it helps make the business community stronger,” said Dean Valdez, a restaurateur and small business owner in Golden. Valdez serves on the chamber’s board and added there’s much more to come in 2020. “I’m looking forward to implementing our new strategic plan that focuses on business advocacy,” he said, “and vastly improving the value the chamber brings to area businesses and the community at large.” Barb Warden, webmaster for GoldenToday.com, has been a member of the chamber for more than 20 years and said she has enjoyed the relationships she’s built through the chamber. “Moreover,” Warden said, “as a lover of Golden history, I’m proud to be part of an organization that has done so much to help Golden thrive over the past century.”

PARKS & TRAILS

My Favorite Trail The city of Golden offers an extensive and interconnected trail system of 24 miles, providing diversity in both types of trail experience and destinations. Regional Trail connections provide a link to neighboring communities and county open space as well. Information about trails and trail etiquette are available at www. cityofgolden.net/play/recreation-attractions/trails/ There are trails in and around Golden to suit every walker, runner, road cyclist or single track fanatic out there. We reached out to many of our Golden Chamber members and asked them what their favorite area trail is. Read on, and maybe find your new favorite trail too. “My favorite Golden Go-To trail is the Clear Creek Trail, right in my own backyard of downtown Golden. I love walking through the history park and seeing the historic homes nearby. Strolling along the beautiful Creek makes me feel as if I have transported back in time in the days that the Miners panned for gold.” – Coach Stacy Fowler, Golden Hayride

“At Matthew Winters the Morrison Slide and Red Rocks Trails are great because they are close to Golden (accessible), have a creek crossing and picnic benches, clean bathrooms, decent parking, AND beautiful mild terrain through gorgeous red rocks.” – Golden Fire Chief Alicia Welch

“My current favorite trails are at Floyd Hill Open Space just north off I-70 at Floyd Hill. New trails have been added each summer so there is always something to explore. You can be so close to the highway but soon you are hiking up and over the ridge into a forested, peaceful area with mountain meadows and you’re rewarded with fabulous views of the Continental Divide! If you are a mountain biker, Floyd Hill Open Space also has the only purpose-built downhill bike only trail along the Front Range, challenging and exhilarating!” – Linda Besler, Mountain Area Land and Trust

G O L D E N C H A M B E R .O R G

“There are a lot of trails to choose from, but I would say one of my favorite trails around Golden is the Basalt Cap Loop Trail, it’s super close to our shop and an easy hike which makes for a great lunch break hike and offers great views of Golden and Denver. Perfect to view awesome sunrises over the front range.” – Phil Sanchez, Mountain Side Gear & Rental

“O’Fallon Park Hiking Trails – Absolutely great scenery as you hike along the trails! The trails are more secluded so you feel more at peace surrounded by nature. Great inclines along the way for a good workout!” – Barbara Garey, GYMGUYZ

“My favorite Golden trail is the one that I often hike atop Lookout Mountain, near where 96.9 the Cloud broadcasts from into Golden.” – Chuck Lontine, 96.9 The Cloud

“My favorite trail is North Table Mountain with a gluten-free beer reward at the end of the trail from Holidaily Brewing!” – Kaitlyn Gipple, Holidaily Brewing Co.

“My favorite trail in Golden is the Beaver Brook Trail. I like the BB Trail because of the amazing views you get while trekking through the diverse terrain including some boulder fields. Although I am a mountain biker, it is nice knowing that there will not be someone flying around the corner on their bike on the trail.” – Mike Helms, New Terrain Brewing Company

“My favorite hike which I typically run on is along Dinosaur Ridge Trail and then up to Red Rocks Amphitheater!! I get to experience the many years of the earth’s existence as I view the fossils and multi-colored rocks and minerals.” – Lorraine DAversa, Lifestyle Realty and Consulting LLC

“North Table Mountain! Love the hill, the views, the wildflowers and the wildlife ... excluding the rattlesnakes!” – Dr. Audrey Waldon, Sirona Physical Therapy

“Triceratops Trail, tucked between 93 and the appropriately named Fossil Trace, is my favorite trail in Golden. When I became Executive Director at Dinosaur Ridge, I knew about the world-importance of our famous dinosaur tracks in Morrison. But what amazed me was the fact that while the Morrison tracks are ranked as the #1 dinosaur track site in the United States by top paleontologists, Triceratops Trail is ranked at #3!” – Jeff Lamontagne, Dinosaur Ridge Visitor Center

“Chimney Gulch, my favorite trail, is almost in our backyard. I love hiking up it — within minutes after leaving home, I feel far from city life. And coming back down, Golden emerges as our cozy town in a mountain bowl. Even when just at home looking out the window, I can vicariously enjoy the trail watching hikers, runners, walkers, birdwatchers, dog walkers, cyclists (even unicyclists), and horseback riders tackle the switchbacks.” – Marjorie Sloan, Former Golden Mayor

“My favorite trail to hike in Golden is South Table Mountain. Its quick, it’s pretty easy, kid and pet friendly. Plus, its nice that I can see it from my office window.” – Lauren Sheldon, ASAP Accounting & Payroll

“My favorite trail is North Table Loop. It has wonderful access for residents interested in a variety of activities from mountain biking, to trail running, and even training with a backpack for those high mountain adventures.” – Keegan Young, Colorado Mountain Club

The most popular network of trails in Golden are those that wind along both banks of Clear Creek.

An open space park nestled in the north end of Golden, the nearly-2,000 acre North Table Mountain Park has the uncanny ability to simultaneously make you feel someplace quite wild while still giving you an expansive view of the metro area.

Put simply, Apex Park lives up to its name.

The trails are easily accessed via Vanover Park at Water and Ford Streets, the Visitors Center at Washington Ave. and 10th St., the Library at 10th and Illinois Streets, Lions Park at 10th and Maple Streets and from 6th Avenue Trail.

Anglers, goldpanners, and adventuring cyclists may want to go further afield, following the stream upwards into Clear Creek Canyon, or follow paved paths to the east, connecting with the expansive trail networks of Wheat Ridge and beyond.

Follow park rules, stay on the trail, be aware of your surroundings, and definitely enjoy your time hiking, rock climbing, or mountain biking along the park’s 17 miles of trails.

Whether you’re looking for a rugged climb with great views, or want to challenge your technical skills as a mountain biker, this is just about as good as it gets for Front Range fun. It is a popular, accessible foothills experience minutes from downtown Golden, that offers a wonderful variety in terrain. From the Jefferson County Open Space website: A stream runs alongside a trail in part of the park, and a dense forest provides shady areas on the west end. This park is popular for mountain biking as it offers more technical trails and a steep challenge up Lookout Mountain. Be aware, there are directional restrictions for Apex Park’s trails: Apex, Argos and Enchanted Forest Trails are directional-use trails. Bicyclists are required to ride in one direction only (uphill/west) on odd-numbered calendar days.

With access to several parks, the Golden Visitor’s Center, Golden Public Library, and Golden History Park the trails make for a pleasant way to access much of what the city has to offer. In the summer, folks looking to wade in the creek, or even inner tube down the rippling water will find designated creek entry points along the path. In December, the creek is aglow every night with thousands of festive lights on virtually every tree.

Wildlife thrives amidst the rocky cliffs of the mesa. There is a seasonal closure of Rim Rock Trail from Feb. 1 to July 31 to allow raptors to successfully fledge along the northern cliffs. Also, an ongoing study is tracking more than a dozen rattlesnakes that call the park home. Not to worry though, give the animals a respectful amount of space, and they will happily leave you alone as well.

No matter if it’s taking in a performance by the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra or visiting the Miners Alley Playhouse — couples have a variety of fun outings to choose from. But when it comes to the dinner-portion of the evening, Golden boasts an impressive range of dining options, including some savory shawarma (Ali Baba Grill), high quality sauvignon blanc (Indulge Bistro and Wine Bar) and many things in between.

A stroll along the Clear Creek Trail can be romantic fun any time of the year. During winter, the trees are lit up with holiday lights at night!

Dinner and a show? Miners Alley Playhouse has food discount deals with some downtown restaurants.

Hey, no pressure. If you want a more casual outing, maybe join them for coffee at Cafe 13 (1301 Arapahoe St.) or an after-work drink at the Golden Moon Speakeasy.

There are some very interesting sandwich options there, for the adventurous eater. Another restaurant he enjoys is Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse, 1122 Washington Ave. He said it’s a throwback, as it was the capitol building when Golden was the capital of Colorado. “Their French onion soup is amazing,” Skougstad said.

Sometimes, however, you might have the urge for some amore over a nice bottle of wine. The Indulge Bistro, located at— 1299 Washington Ave., offers a wide

selection of Italian and American dishes, all with refined touches. The humble mac and cheese entree for instance, includes a decadent drizzle of truffle oil on top. Perhaps it’s time for dessert, or maybe your date has a sweet tooth, why not stop by Golden Sweets? Head into the family owned and operated shop and sip sodas together, grab ice creams before strolling through the streets, or just sample some chocolate creations. You and your date not ready for full commitment just yet? Tributary Food Hall, 701 12th St., is composed of eight independent food and drink purveyors and offers a full-service bar to let diners keep their options open. From pizza to Peking duck wings, couples can nosh with impunity at Tributary. Josh Dinar, an owner of Tributary said the bar is always a great place to start on a first date, where a couple could order a pizza or PAGE 32 

By Clarke Reader Golden doesn’t just sit at the gateway to the Rockies – it’s also the gateway to numerous arts and cultural activities. There are well-known facets of the city’s cultural scene like the Buffalo Rose, a restaurant and live entertainment venue in the heart of Golden, and

“We felt we could take theatre up to another level, because there’s a lot of good theater around, but not a lot of excellent theater,” said Artistic and Executive Director, Len Matheo. He took over the theater along with his wife, Lisa DeCaro, and partners Jim Billings and the late Brenda Worley Billings. “We are a hub and

“People who come here will have a great theater experience from the moment they walk in the door,” Matheo said. “We’re run with local Golden volunteers, it’s a warm and inviting environment, it’s a great experience watching the show, and then extend the experience afterwards by meeting the artists themselves.”

Colorado Railroad Museum

“Historically, Golden had aspirations to be the railroad center of Colorado,” Hammond said. “We’re a tie to that past as well.”

Opened in 1959, the Colorado Railroad Museum has been catering to train fans of all ages with a range of ways to spend a day. Options range from riding a train (if they are running) to a rotating signature exhibit and exploring the more than 100 narrow and standard gauge steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, cabooses HO Model Railroad and G-scale garden railway on the 15-acre railyard. The museum is a goldmine for

But there’s also historical events and Colorado Rails and Cocktails for the adults. “We have a big, covered picnic pavilion where visitors can bring their lunch to eat,” Hammond said. “Visitors can easily spend a couple hours looking around, going on a train ride, have some lunch, and you’ve got yourself a nice morning and afternoon.” PAGE 34 

As Paul Hammond, executive director of the Colorado Railroad Museum, explains it, imagining Colorado without the railroad is practically an impossible task. Perhaps no piece of technology has played a bigger role in the settling of the state, and Golden in particular has strong ties to the industry.

Jefferson Symphony Orchestra The JSO is a cultural treasure. The group was founded in 1953 and has enriched Golden and the surrounding county both through numerous performances, but also through its world-class Young Artist Competition and by giving regional amateur musicians a place to hone their skills and perform for 67 seasons now. The 75-member ensemble is based in Golden, featuring fine musicians from many walks of life. The orchestra, under Maestro William Morse, continues to perform the most challenging of repertoire — to a standard rarely seen in volunteer orchestras. Last year the JSO was forced out of its longtime home, the Green Center on

Performances this year will include Gustav Holst’s Planets, as well as the more modern work of William Grant Still. Pyotr Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 in E Minor will be performed as part of the JSO’s Young Artist competition winner’s concert, March 15.

The robust STEM program at Bell Middle School enjoys strong community suport, including partnerships with the Colorado School of Mines. Speaking of the Colorado School of Mines, it made the top-100 list of national universities, as ranked by both US News and Forbes.

Old West honored. Every year the Buffalo Bill Saddle Club rides up the local

trails to visit the famous Wild West figure's grave site on Lookout Mountain. The annual ride was the initial inspiration for the Buffalo Bill Days parade and festival, which takes place in late July each year. History lovers will also want to stroll through the Golden History Park Park, where many of Jefferson County's oldest permanent structures from the first white settlers were relocated for posterity. Special demonstrations and classes are often held in the history park, as well as musical performances.

mountains and the foothills, the city of Golden is just so picturesque from every angle. Whether you are watching the sun rise over the Castle Rock from downtown, or gazing over the city lights from one of the table mountains, the views around here rarely disappoint.

Denver proximity. Golden sits at a comfortable distance from most of the Denver metro area. The city and all of its sights is only 30 minutes from the capital's downtown, yet it still has the charm of a more remote mountain town. Entertainment and eating out. Diverse dining scene, a renowned arts community, unique stores, and community events nearly every weekend all year long ... Golden has much to offer just about anyone.
