EVENTS While 2022 is shaping up to be a great year, there is still some uncertainty around COVID-19 and how public safety precautions and public health orders may affect special events this year. Here are some preliminary dates for some of the wonderful annual events that will make Golden a great destination this year. Of special interest is the potential restart to the world-famous Coors Brewery tours. n any sunny day, paragliders can be seen launching off the hillsides above Golden. The mountain, officially named Mount Zion (though often referred to by the name of the next-door Lookout Mountain) has a long history with hang gliders. People have been flying hang gliders off the spot since the late 1960s. In fact, there used to be a hang glider factory in town. “Lookout is one of the oldest flying sites in the country,” said Jason Ely, owner and founder of Paraglide Tandem. Paragliding didn’t arise until the late 1970s, when mountaineers in the Alps were using it as a technique to get down to the valley floor. Now, Ely and his team paraglide daily in the sky above Golden. “I love paragliding more than anything in the world,” Ely said. “We take people that have never flown before and introduce them to the sport of paragliding. The idea is to share the sport with everyone and ultimately convince hopefully a bunch of people to figure out what paragliding is about and go fly themselves. But also available for tourists who want to come fly off a mountain.”

Ely has been paragliding for 15 years. He came into it from the commercial pilot route. One of his first jobs as a pilot was to fly skydivers. He eventually learned to skydive himself and loved it. When he found out he didn’t need an airplane and could just run off the hill in his backyard to soar, he was hooked. He started Paraglide Golden in 2013, with the following year being his first busy season. Instructors fly daily off Lookout April through November. “Our goal isn’t just to glide down, we want to fly for as long as we can and we do that by catching the thermals the same as a hawk or an eagle would,” Ely said. “And part of the reason we love Lookout is it has a road to the top and it’s on public land.” On a good day, a flight from Golden to Boulder is possible. “For me, it started as the feeling and adrenaline of running off the hill, but as I’ve gotten further into my paragliding career, what keeps me coming back is that it’s different every day,” Ely said. or a relatively small town, Golden has an awful lot going on. The old cliché really holds true here – there’s something for everyone. Restaurants galore, plenty of opportunities for time in the great outdoors and cultural hotspots galore. Golden is home to galleries, venues for live music and places to immerse oneself in a range of different histories. In the big three categories – theater, music and art – here are the spots that cannot be missed. MUSIC: The Buffalo Rose LOCATION: 119 Washington Ave. INFORMATION: 720-638-5597 buffalorosegolden.com

A true historical touchstone of Golden, there has been a saloon on the site of the Buffalo Rose since 1859. According to information provided by owner Chris Cone, the kinds of businesses operating on the site over the years include a hotel, car garage, indoor pool, union hall, several restaurants, butcher, tailor and barbershop. “After a total facility overhaul in 2018, visitors to the Rose can expect to be surrounded by authentic western American history, but in the comfort of modern-day amenities,” Cone said. “Excellent views of the stage can be found on the main and mezzanine levels. There are two bars and a world-class sound and lighting system.” Located right in the heart of historical downtown, Cone added that live music became a staple of the Rose in the 1980s and over the decades has played host to numerous memorable artists. “Golden is a pretty quiet town in the evening. The Rose is a venue that brings world class entertainment to our fair city and gives folks something to do when the sun goes down,” he said. “In many ways, the Buffalo Rose uniquely embodies the history of both the American West and classic rock and roll.” PAGE 15 

Golden’s theatrical hub has been under the management of Len Matheo, Lisa DeCaro and partners Jim Billings and the late Brenda Worley Billings since 2013, but the theater’s story goes back a decade before that. In a typical year it serves more than 20,000 visitors, according to Matheo, and during the COVID-19 pandemic the theater pivoted to online performances. “Live theater is an important part of every community, and Miners Alley Playhouse offers Golden a venue where patrons and artists can connect and talk about the issues of the day, all while enjoying award-winning shows, with some of the best talent in the Denver metro area,” Matheo said.

The 130-seat theater regularly sells out, and Miners Alley’s vibrant children theater program keeps everyone busy. As a result, the theater purchased the former Meyer Hardware store building — a deal that will allow Miners Alley to become what Mattheo hopes is the “premier performing arts center on the west side of town.” This is all in support of an effort to give back to a community that has kept the theater going for its nearly 20 years. “Miners Alley is an intimate venue makes you feel like you’re watching the performance right there in your own living room,” Matheo said. “And after every performance the performers mingle at the bar, connecting with patrons and each other. When you walk through the doors, you immediately feel welcome and part of the Miners Alley family.” PAGE 16 

Since its founding in 1968, the Foothills Art Center (also known as FAC), has hosted everyone from community artists to world-renowned glass sculptor Dave Chihuly in its three galleries. Its holiday market is a major draw every holiday season and has built up a reputation as one of the best places to ﬁnd unique and beautifully crafted gifts.

For those with children, the center offers a variety of ways to get them in touch with their creative side. There are eight weeks of summer classes taught by local Jefferson County art teachers that have become extremely popular, as well as classes during spring break and during the holidays. Exhibits in 2022 will include a variety of mediums and topics, ranging from mosaics and pottery to a student exhibition and an examination of the work of photographer Brooke Shaden.

Mother Cabrini Shrine is a shrine to Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, located in Golden. With her beatification in 1938, the property in Golden became a place of prayer, pilgrimage and devotion to Mother Cabrini and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. STICK TO TRAILS With 39,000 marked trails and 13,000 designated campsites, there’s no need to venture beyond. By sticking to these areas and camping at least 200 feet from lakes, rivers and streams, you’re helping natural areas stay natural. Even though shortcuts can be tempting, please don’t take them. A few extra strides on the path will protect plants and the homes of the true locals. Melting snow leaves trails and vegetation more open to damage. Be sure to stick to trails and walk in the middle of the trail — even if it’s wet, muddy, slushy or icy — to avoid erosion and damage to trailside plants. Make sure to wear sturdy footwear — like insulated, waterproof hiking boots — so you can always stick to the trail, particularly in spring and early summer when trails are more likely to be wet and muddy from melting snow. Spring can be a particularly sensitive time for wildlife since many species are nesting, having their young or coming out of hibernation. Be sure to travel quietly and give all wildlife extra space during this time.
