I

f the past is prologue, Fort Lupton got it’s start in 1829, when the city’s namesake, Lancaster Lupton, graduated from Westpoint.

A native of New York state, Lupton went on to serve as a first lieutenant and was part of Colonel Henry Dodge’s expedition to the Great Plains in 1834 and 1835.

Lupton was traveling in Colorado through the South Platte Valley when he came upon this area and chose it as the place to build a trading post in 1836. Today a few historic buildings designated as historic landmarks are still in existence throughout Fort Lupton including Lancaster Lupton’s trading post, which is located at Historic park.

FORT LU PTON’S PAST, IN THE PRESENT Independence School, named as a historic landmark as of February 1995 The Independence School formally Acorn Academy was built in 1875 and also it was the third building to be used by the school district. The school district extended from the northern edge of Hughes Station in Brighton to the southern edge of Fort Lupton. The land where the school was build was donated by a landowner. The parents paid for the building and teacher’s salaries with a place to live.

The contracts for teachers in the 1900s had strict binding rules.

“The women teachers were not required to marry until their contract expires, could not keep in the company of men, they could not loiter downtown in the ice cream store, travel beyond city limits unless they had permission by the chairmen of the board, or ride in a car or carriage with a man unless it was their father or brother,” said LaVon Watson, Platte Valley Historical Society.

The first school was held in an abandoned log cabin on the Smith Farm in 1864. The log cabin was built with a secret cellar, so when Indians attacked the school the teacher and children would hide in the cellar. The first timber-framed school building was voted by the board in 1875. It was named Acorn Academy by the children after a cattle rancher who used an acorn as his brand. The school was renamed Independence School in early 1890.

The school was moved several times around the area on large rollers, with several oxen or draft horses. The building was also used for farmworkers. Later, it was donated to the Platte Valley Historical Society, restored and now it resides at Historic Park for tours.

Donelson Homestead House designated a Historic Landmark, April 1997 Thomas Donelson came to Colorado in 1859 from Wisconsin to follow the gold rush in the rocky mountains. Donelson soon returned to Wisconsin to bring back his wife Laura and their children Mary, Maria, Eleanor, Thomas, John, and James to Colorado.

The family’s first homestead was a cabin along the Platte River near Brighton. After the flood of 1864, Donelson moved to higher ground and built the Donelson Homestead House. The Donelson house sits at Historic Park for tours and is furnished with furniture of the 1800s.

Ewing Barn, designated a Historic Landmark in July 2002

David Ewing traveled out west to Colorado from Illinois in 1859 transporting goods between Omaha, Denver, and the Gold camps by mule and by ox with a covered wagon.

He returned to Illinois in 1860 to bring his wife Nancy Jane back west and while traveling their son Miliard got sick and passed away near Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The Ewings landed in Blackhawk, Colorado, and William Albert was born in 1861. The Ewings left Blackhawk in 1862 crossing the South Platte River and came across the old Lancaster Lupton Fort and built his home and the Ewing Barn on the property.

FORT LU PTON’S PAST, IN THE PRESENT the history about the David W. Ewing family for the South Platte Historical Society and also lives in the house that was owned by the Ewing Family.

“The Bureau of Land Management indicates that David Ewing bought 160 acres of land the Fort sits on in 1867, from Hugh Monson. The chain of ownership after Lancaster Lupton abandoned the Fort in 1846, including several people that did not stay. Either way, Lupton was the first settler in the area. Ewing’s land was the oldest land that was claimed continuously and owned by the same family in Weld County,” said Rankin.

Ewing purchased another 1,000 acres between County Road 14 ½ and County Rd 18, on both sides of the river. He raised horses and cattle owning the first Texas longhorns, and the short horns. Then he switched to raising dairy cattle. The barn was used for storage.

David Ewing died after a year-long illness in 1895. After his death, his grandson Harry Ewing took over running the ranch. Nancy Jane lived with Harry Ewing and his family until she died in 1904. The Ewing Barn was donated to the Platte Valley Historic Society and sits at Historic Park near the old Fort.

“The Fort Lupton,” “Frontier Pioneer Women,” and “the Scout” hangs near the front entrance and back wall of the library. They were painted

by Hayes Lyons who was a modernist west artist from Athol, Kansas.

protecting his home. The largest mural titled “Fort Lupton” is eight feet tall and 36 feet wide painted by Hayes Lyons dated 1940. It illustrates a narrative of the history of the town. Lyons died in 1987 in Denver.

According to the library, the students in the old high school paid for the cost of the art materials for Hayes who later donated the paintings to the school. Ester McCrump who was the secretary of Fort Lupton Preservation Board formed the Historic Preservation Ordinance in January 1995, so on May 1995 the officials from the historical society celebrated designating the three art pieces.

Fort Lupton Museum, designated a historic structure in March 1996 The city of Fort Lupton built its first library in 1929 where the museum sits today. It was designed in a Carnegie style by architect, John J. Huddart. It was an idea by its citizens, a women’s group organization, the Thursday Afternoon Club, and Current Events Club.

The upstairs and a portion of the lower level of the library were rented to the school district between 1929 and 1931. Then in 1931, the main floor was used as a library and the lower level was used as a community room with a stage.

Before 1923 the roaming book collection was handled by volunteers. Miss Norma Hardenburg was the first paid librarian. When the library opened it shelved over 2,850 books and by 1935 the collection of books grown to over 4,000 with a circulation of nearly 12,000 items.

Lyons was a native from Athol, Kansas and with his family, they settled in Boulder in 1920. Lyons graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1931 with a B.A. degree in economics but his first love was art and it became a lifetime career.

The Western Painting Conservation Group was commissioned to restore the paintings in 1993. The group used Q-tips as a restoration method to carefully clean the three paintings.

The “Frontier Pioneer Woman” was painted

by Hayes Lyons dated 1940. It’s a historical reference of the pioneer woman raising children and taking care of the homestead.

The currents Events Club added works of art to the library. The new high school was built in 1976 with space for a public and school library. The library was moved to the school which became the Fort Lupton Public and School Library. The empty building was used periodically or rented by numerous organizations. As of 1992, the building became the home of the City of Fort Lupton Museum.

St. Andrews Episcopal Church and Parsonage, designated a Historic Landmark, October 1998.

St. Andrews was build in 1907 and completed in 1908 by Robert Ozment and its members of the church. Ozment’s father founded the first brickworks in Fort Lupton.

His bricks were used to construct Fort Lupton’s earliest structures within the city.

Today, only minimal changes to the church structures such as the doors have been replaced and also roof replacement from wood to asphalt shingles.

Ozment bricks were soft and deteriorated in many of the early buildings that were contracted in Fort Lupton including St. Andrews, so the structure was stuccoed.

From 1970 through 1993, the priests would preach the gospel at both St. Andrews and St. Elizabeth’s in Brighton where they resided.

Today, the church continues to serve the community of Fort Lupton.

St. John Building was designated as a Historic Landmark in June 2004 Edgar St. John built the St. John Building in 1882. George Twombly opened his General Store in the St. John Building. The St. John Building was an icon of downtown Fort Lupton commercial district and in 1912 a fire broke out destroying the original structure, so the building had to be restored.

Today, Wholly Stromboli restaurant is operating in the St. Johns building. During the renovation and construction of the building, they found artifacts that are now on display in the bar area. Also, it’s rumored the building is haunted.

“There are some who believe that this building houses the presence of past occupants who make themselves known from time to time, so keep your eyes peeled,” said Melissa Rickman owner of Wholly Stromboli.

Odd Fellow Lodge, designated a historic landmark January 2011 The Odd Fellow Lodge was built in 1914 for a mixed-use retail and office space by contractor Otis Bartholomew and John Funk. On the first floor was the retail space with a candy store, barbershop, grocery store, and meat market.

On the second floor was the Odd Fellow Lodge.

After the candy store went out of business in 1930, a drug store moved into space and was named Fort Lupton Drug until the 1950s.

In the 1930s the barbershop moved out of the building and it was replaced by the A.j. Schloo shoes and clothing store. Then in the early 1940’s, the store was renamed George Bender.

Between 1940 and 1950 the Public Service company had an office in the building for customers to pay bills. Today, a barbershop, a salon, and a travel agency are operating on the first floor of the building.

Ottesen Grain Company designated a Historic Landmark, November 1998 For over fifty years the Ottesen Grain Company Feed Mill was the only grain company to buy and livestock feed in Fort Lupton since 1920. Since then the empty feed mill has been remodeled for commercial use.

The feed mill consists of two tall silos with three adjoining buildings. It was built with concrete, brick, tile, and steel. The feed mill building was occupied by Gorilla Alchemy Brewery but had to close due to the pandemic in 2020. A new restaurant El Reparo Grill is in the process of opening in the building.
