You could call it a family obsession.

Andy Parks learned his love of flying and of vintage aircraft watching his father.

“When growing up, my best analogy – I was like a puppy dog underneath my dad’s foot, and I liked going to the airports,” Parks said.

A respected doctor and professor at University of Colorado Obstetrics and Gynecology, flying was a hobby for Jim Parks, Andy’s father. He loved airplanes and he loved talking flying with other pilots.

“He had the opportunity to go to Munich to teach, so we moved there in the late 1960s, which allowed my dad to meet a lot of German and European

pilots,” Parks said.

One of those was famous World War I German Fokker Triplane ace Josef Jakobs before his death in 1978.

Parks’ grandfather, Charles Fred Parks, had the same obsession. His served in the artillery in World War I and was gassed in the Meuse Argonne offensive. He later transferred to the Army Air Service as an observer, joining his cousin Capt. Victor Parks, who was with the 166th Daylight Bombardment Squadron.

Since 1999, Parks has made his obsession open to the public, every other Saturday by appointment.

His Vintage Aero Flying Museum is

located just east of Fort Lupton in Platte Valley Airpark. The museum houses accurate replicas of aircraft flown by famous World War I pilots, as well as an intimate collection of pilot uniforms, memorabilia and real stories of the original pilots who flew these vintage planes.

BRINGING THEM HOME

Parks thinks his is a rare attraction.

“There are some war museums on the East Coast and the West Coast, but in the middle of the country, this is the only one,” Parks said.

Parks started flying solo when he was 21 years old, and after college got back into flying. He said he was inspired by his father to build the museum.

“My dad built one of the planes here in the museum. He started building a replica of the Fokker D.VII from plans,” Parks said “He worked on it since 1971, out of his

garage when I was 8, and finished it in 1979. I’ve been involved with that airplane one way or another for most of my life, either building it, flying it, or maintaining it.”

They started building their airplanes in their father’s garage. Parks moved them all to Platte Valley Airpark in 1999 and built his own hangar in 2000. With that, his vintage aircraft museum was in business.

The Vintage Museum is a nonprofit at the Lafayette Foundation and honors the World War I flying corps the Lafayette Escadrille. Made up of American volunteers, the unit flew missions based out of France. That foundation helps support the museum, although Parks, a reverse mortgage specialist when he’s not working on his aircraft, does his share.

“The job is what I do to support the museum,” Parks said.

It is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas that can enter your home through dirt floors, crawl spaces, and cracks in your home’s foundation, floors, and walls. Approximately 49% of all homes tested in Weld County have high radon levels. The only way to know if your home has a radon problem is to test. aircraft, Parks keep memorabilia related to the aircraft built in the museum. Some of it came from the association with the Lafayette Foundation, but his father collected quite a bit himself.

“I have some of his memorabilia in the collection and some of it is in Boston American Heritage Museum,” Parks said. “They were too valuable to have here. Boston has a 60,000-square-foot museum building to house the uniforms.”

LIGHTER TRAFFIC

He couldn’t ask for a better location than the 224-acre air park. A public use airport, Platte Valley Airpark is privately owned. Marilyn Taylor, a member of the ownership group, said it’s a country airport and doesn’t have a lot of traffic.

“It’s a place for students to tour

and learn about aviation,” she said.

But Parks said it’s perfect for his uses. The lighter traffic allows him to get his vintage flyers up.

“We need an open area like this one where we can fly and not have a lot of aircraft traffic,” Parks said, noting that the vintage aircraft don’t have radios. “Denver International Airport and other airports know we are here, so people look out for us — it’s old school.”

Parks is not alone in the obsession. A core group helps him keep the museum in the air. Many volunteers are airplane mechanics and pilots who enjoy building their replicas of World War I vintage planes, and multiple generations of families have volunteered at the museum.

“It’s a grassroots operation with people who love to build their own planes,” Parks said. “Most of the

planes in the museum are homebuilt experimental and replicas of World War I planes and there are pilots that are flying the planes we built from plans. It’s a communal effort with lot of people that come over with friends. They work with us or we help them with their plane. It’s a different style, an old school style.”

Matthew Dunning is an airframe and power plant mechanic. He’s also the museum’s head mechanic and has been working on airplanes for the museum for seven years. Dunning and his team of mechanics build the parts in-house for the vintage planes since you can’t find the parts today.

“It’s a lot of fun working here and being part of it, and we have a good time and look out for each other. We got many different people that have their specialties and pilots

that fly the planes,” Dunning said.

Ryan Courreges is a pilot who volunteers to work on the planes under Matt Dunning’s supervision. He’s been working on cars his whole life and has been flying for several years.

Courreges said he started flying gliders when he was 13 years old. Not only does he work on the planes at the museum, but he also flies them. His own vintage craft is a Vans RV-4 designed in the ’80s.

“I fly mostly experimental, then the standard certified. The standard certified are not as much fun, they don’t have the character of the experimental planes,” Courreges said. “There is risk of not being maintained. It’s why we maintain them and we know what has happened to all of these airplanes.”

Their enthusiasm feels good to Parks.

“The idea of younger people like Ryan interested in flying and getting into these vintage planes to fly them — it’s great,” Parks said. “It’s getting to be a lost art of tailwheel, open cockpit, biplane flying.”

Tailwheel means an airplane with the third

wheel at the rear; flying an open cockpit biplane is like driving a convertible car but in the air.

Parks said the vintage museum and airport offer tours for many area schools, so it’s perfect for the kids to come out to an airport without going through security. The kids get a personal treat to see the pilots fly the vintage planes.

“There have been quite of few kids that toured the airport and museum that are now airline

pilots or mechanics, and quite a few of them have been female too as well as males,” Parks said.

The museum is typically open on some Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a caveat to call first at 303-668-8044.

“I always tell people to call ahead of time so we can confirm that we’re going to be here and/or if the weather is bad,” Parks said.
