It’s time to hoot, holler, and kick up your heels because Evergreen’s Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) Rodeo event is “on the road again!” A Father’s Day weekend tradition for 56 years in Evergreen, Colorado, this national circuit rodeo returns to El Pinal Rodeo Grounds on Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19. Thanks to venue owners Judy and Kenny Jeronimus, a rodeo party will kick-off the festivities at The Little Bear on Friday, June 17 at 5:00pm and music will be provided by Ryan Chrys & the Rough Cuts, Colorado Country Music Hall of Fame’s 2019 Band of the Year winners.

with a downtown parade on Saturday, June 18. This outstanding rousing spectacle of fanfare marches through downtown Evergreen as a forerunner to the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon rodeo performances. The parade’s 2022 Grand Marshall is Jerry Tolman who has been involved with the Evergreen Rodeo Association for over 50 years!

The 2022 Evergreen Rodeo features quality-bred livestock and introduces and showcases national top rodeo professionals who will demonstrate their cowboy skills at riding broncos, roping calves, wrestling steers, and more! On Saturday, gates open at 3:00pm and the PRCA Pro Rodeo performance starts at 5:00pm. On Sunday, gates open at 12:00pm and the PRCA Pro Rodeo performance starts at 2:00pm.

Mame Dennis, the Manhattan-bred movie character of Auntie Mame (Lucille Ball/1974), took the south by storm and added a kick to Georgia’s Mint Julep.

Likewise, Coloradan Margaret “Shorty” Martinez has proved to be a sensational inspirational force at breakfast and lunch (Monday-through-Friday) at Evergreen’s Elk Run Assisted Living community ever since she joined its staff six months ago!

Although Martinez had no previous hospitality or senior living experience, she answered Elk Run’s ad for a Dining Room Hostess and was pleasantly surprised when she was hired. Because Elk Run now has mealtime spans of two

hours to accommodate residents, this community benefit and improvement caused issues with the caregivers’ schedule and creating the new hostess position was the solution.

“I had been employed as a scale house operator in a scrapyard, so this job opportunity was a 360-degree shift from my skills and previous work experience,” said Shorty Martinez who mentioned she rides a Harley and was nicknamed “Shorty” by her friends because she’s one-inch shy of being five feet tall.

The Elk Run community, 31383 Frost Way, opines that Shorty’s upbeat personality is contagious! She goes above and beyond to foster new friendships among residents and elevates the quality of life for all community members.

Many residents commented that they

“have never seen a person that goes so much out of her way to help people.”

“She is so funny. She makes you feel so good about yourself,” said one Elk Run member.

“Don’t you love the nicknames she puts on people. They fit them so well,” said another who acknowledged that Shorty dubbed two residents Laverne and Shirley because they are always together, and another group is known as The Three Amigos.

“Don’t you love her work ethics; she will not do a job halfway. She jumps right on a problem and won’t go home until it’s done,” said an Elk Run resident who recalled that after the last big snowstorm, when the cook was unable to travel to Elk Run in the inclement weather, Shorty wound up actually

cooking breakfast for the residents. “She makes me laugh so much you don’t mind waiting a little for your food.”

Shorty not only caters to the mealtime needs and wants of the residents, but also, she has a knack for knowing how to keep the crowd happy and engaged with her humor and special brand of (music/singing/dancing) entertainment.

The Elk Run Assisted Living community extends kudos to Shorty Martinez.

Free offsite parking and shuttle service is available at Evergreen’s Big R Store (30931 Stage Coach Boulevard), as well as at the Medical Center (30960 Stagecoach Boulevard) just west and south of the Big R Store. Rodeo fans are strongly encouraged to use the free offsite parking and enjoy the free shuttle bus service available from those designated parking locations.

The Evergreen Rodeo is a rain-orshine event; so be prepared for our ever-changing Colorado weather. All rodeo seating is General Admission (no refunds!). Many people bring blankets and sit on the hill above the bleachers.
