State lifts many COVID restrictions for schools Updated public health order lasts until Aug. 1 unless extended

In yet another major lifting of state-imposed coronavirus restrictions, Colorado released an updated public health order that removes mask requirements for schools and repeals the mandate for school protocols regarding outbreaks and other instances of COVID-19 cases.

The updated order — which took effect July 1 and expires on Aug. 1 unless extended — whittles Colorado’s state-imposed virus restrictions down to a point where they leave public settings in most Coloradans’ daily lives unaffected.

Here’s a look at what changed with the updated public health order.

Mask requirements Previously, the list of settings where masks were required for unvaccinated individuals included — among other places — preschool through grade 12 schools and child care centers and services, including camps. The requirement also applied to staff of Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles offices.

DA’s office saddled with case backlog due to COVID New program for adults with addiction also announced in DA’s community update

Suspects and victims of crimes have been waiting for their day in court for longer periods of time amid restrictions on the judicial system during the coronavirus pandemic, according to John Kellner, the district attorney for Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

“We do have challenges,” Kellner said, citing that 111 felony trials are set to proceed in Arapahoe County alone in August. “We are looking at another year or so to dig out of this.”

Kellner spoke to the community and took questions during a June 29 virtual meeting via Zoom. He updated the public on his office’s new programs and other information about criminal justice in his area.

He holds a quarterly meeting with the community, according to his office. Kellner’s jurisdiction of four counties is Colorado’s 18th Judicial District.

Online ‘data dashboard’ gives public a look into criminal justice system

The district attorney for much of the south Denver metro area says his jurisdiction — the 18th Judicial District — is the first in Colorado to unveil an online, interactive “data dashboard,” according to a news release.

The tool will make more information available to the public about District Attorney John Kellner’s office and its work on an ongoing basis. The district includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

“We are public servants, and the public has a right to meaningful information about what we do,” Kellner said in the release.

Case backlog stretches on In terms of court capacity slowly

ency initiative, according to the release, includes five data dashboards: • Dashboard 1 includes general information on the number of cases filed, cases resolved, the number of days to reach a resolution and the average number of court appearances before resolution. Like all the dashboards, it can be sorted by type of case and county.

• Dashboard 2 digs into the cases themselves, including a list of all cases filed in the last 30 days.

• Dashboard 3 presents information about how cases are resolved.

• Dashboard 4 provides details about sentences in those cases with a guilty verdict or plea agreement. The vast majority of sentences are focused on treatment and rehabilitation, according to the news release.

• Dashboard 5 includes limited demographic information about defendants with a guilty plea or verdict, along with the sentence imposed.

The dashboards are available on returning, the judicial district was “in the crawl stage” in February and March, Kellner said.

Speaking about current trial capacity, Kellner noted Arapahoe County is open almost 50% in its district court,

The race and ethnicity data regarding cases are limited because the information can come from various sources, Kellner said during a June 29 virtual community meeting. For example, it’s possible for race to be self-reported, he said.

The ethnicity data is not tracked by courts, he added.

Eventually, Kellner’s office plans to list ZIP-code and race and ethnicity data about victims of crime as well.

Another goal is to account for criminal history in the data so that the office can, for example, show why someone accused of attempted murder was sentenced to 18 years and another person accused of attempted murder was sentenced to 30 years, Kellner said. which hears felony cases. Western Welcome Week in need of sponsors

After a subdued Western Welcome Week last year, Littleton’s signature community bash is hoping for a bonanza return this August - but fundraising is proving difficult, and the clock is ticking.

With just over a month to go, the 93rd annual Western Welcome Week is at a little more than two-thirds of its $70,000 fundraising goal, said Cindy Hathaway, the nonprofit’s longtime executive director.

“Our sponsorships have been a little topsy-turvy this year,” Hathaway said. “Some of the organizations who sponsored us in the past no longer exist, some have reduced their giving, and others I simply can’t get a hold of.”

Arapahoe sees a higher trial load: Thirty of the 43 felony trials since February have occurred in Arapahoe, according to Kellner’s presentation.

One viewer of the Zoom meeting asked why Arapahoe has an overall case backlog of about 1,600 or more while Douglas has a case backlog of 2,000 even though Arapahoe’s population is much larger than that of Douglas.

A big driver of the difference was a recent reduction in traffic cases, Kellner answered. Misdemeanors and felonies declined but not at the same rate, he added.

“We’re seeing a lot less traffic cases that were filed in Arapahoe and (we) were able to dig out of that a little faster,” Kellner said.

He noted that the Douglas County District Court, on average, has a higher case load per prosecutor because Arapahoe has more felony divisions: Six or seven felony judges serve in Arapahoe as opposed to just two in Douglas, Kellner said.

That difference amounts to a “pinch point” that drives the higher case backlog in Douglas, Kellner said.

The case backlog in Elbert stood at 150 cases, and Lincoln’s sat at 380.

Targeting crimes linked to racism, bias Around March of this year, the public was hearing more about a concerning rise in anti-Asian crimes, exemplified especially by the shootings in the Atlanta area that killed eight people, six of them women of Asian descent, Kellner noted.

Local officials in Colorado wondered what they could do better to “put some more teeth” into state law regarding bias-motivated crimes, Kellner said.

He worked with state Sen. Rhonda Fields of Aurora on an effort to

Still, she and the board remain committed to putting on a party befitting the emergence from the COVID crisis.

better target those crimes. The bill “passed overwhelmingly in both the Senate and the House” and was signed into law recently by Gov. Jared Polis, Kellner said.

The new law, state Senate Bill 21280, clarifies that crimes need only be partially motivated by bias to be categorized as a bias-motivated crime.

Under that new law, a person can be accused of a bias-motivated crime if the crime occurs with the intent to intimidate or harass another person, in whole or in part because of that person’s race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation.

New program to address addiction Starting in July, the DA’s office was to launch a new “diversion” program for adults who are struggling with addiction, Kellner said. It’s intended to focus on drug possession cases.

For those who are accused of a first or second offense, the program will take them out of the court system entirely, Kellner said. If they comply with the program to help them back on their feet, their charge will be dismissed.

Seeking info on shooting Kellner asked the public for any information people have about a shooting that occurred at a gathering related to a Juneteenth celebration in Aurora off Mississippi Avenue at Peoria Street.

The incident saw multiple shooters, more than 100 shell cases recovered at the scene, four people wounded and one killed, Kellner said.

“We’re still looking for help on this, and we need the public’s assistance to solve cases like this,” Kellner said.

Cox wielded words as watchdog of government His weeklies chronicled news in the ’90s in Jefferson County

Robert E. Cox — known as Bob Cox — former publisher of the Jefferson Sentinel Newspapers, died June 25 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Retired Aurora Sentinel Publisher Harrison Cochran described him as ahead of his times. And Mr. Cox proved to be ahead of his passing by leaving an epitaph on his Facebook: I have traveled on, and I leave with the knowledge that I will remember each and every one of you as I make my exit. Goodbye to all. Live happy and respectful lives. — Bob Emmett Cox 7/31/38-6/25/21 Mr. Cox grew up in Denver and graduated from East High School.

He experienced other parts of the country before returning to Denver, where he finished his career in 1999.

He retired in Santa Fe, where he rebuilt an adobe home on the Chama River.

He briefly attended at the University of Miami and then studied political science and journalism at CU-Boulder. During his career, he was editor of the Colorado Daily, a correspondent and regional executive at United Press International, politics reporter at the San Diego

In 1991, he and his wife, Sid O’Connell, purchased the Jefferson County weeklies and formed a partnership with other Denver suburban newspapers. The weeklies covered the western suburbs of Denver including Lakewood, Wheat Ridge and Arvada. The Coxes led their news and advertising teams to win many Colorado Press Association awards and sold the papers in 1999.

Mr. Cox kept a sharp eye on the doings of elected officials, which he expressed in his editorials. He coached his reporters to take the time to dig for information. His editorials pulled no punches but were peppered with wit and humor.

Former staffers appreciated how he made time for some fun in the highintensity work of news reporting.

Former Managing Editor Joe Ross said, “Bob was a great person and journalism leader who was always in front of the curve. In the 1990s, he started a daily news fax and then an online product before

anyone else in the region. He taught me and others so much about quality journalism.”

Cochran said, “Bob Cox was a member of the ‘surly malcontents’ with the Colorado Press Association making his own brand of ‘good trouble.’ Somehow Bob managed to combine the cynicism of a grizzled UPI wire reporter with the entrepreneurial fire of small business ownership and the ethics of a lone cowboy.”

His “Facebook friends were accustomed to a tirade or quip on any topic at any time but most often poking fun at pompous politicians,” Cochran added.

Former Colorado Community Media Publisher Jerry Healey said, “I found Bob to be very creative and often ahead of his time. But, most of all, I enjoyed his sense of humor, and his contagious laugh.”

Mr. Cox’s son, Kennedy Cox, said he has lost his best friend. The father and son enjoyed engaging in musical endeavors — especially guitar — and traveling on the road to have semi-philosophical conversations and spend time together.

In 2017, the dean of the College of Media, Communications and Journalism, in an official ceremony, recognized Bob’s life’s accomplishments and retroactively awarded Bob’s actual bachelor’s degree in journalism having been a couple of credits short in 1968.

Mr. Cox collected favorite quotes on his Facebook that include: “You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from,” by Cormac McCarthy, and “To be Irish is to know, in the end, the world will break your heart,” by Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

He is survived by his son, Kennedy Cox of Denver; “best friend” and former wife, Sidnie O’Connell of Lakewood; sister Lynn Murphy, Seattle, Washington; niece Amie Servais of Sammamish, Washington; nephew Baxter Baldwin of Scottsdale, Arizona; and several great nieces and nephews. He was at home in hospice care with his family at the time of death in Santa Fe. Forward Together a state tool for parents, youths Website aims to empower, connect struggling young people with tools, resources

Long before the current behavioral health crisis reached the public spotlight, the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment saw a need for more public outreach to help parents and teens.

In collaboration with the Colorado Department of Human Services, the state health department unveiled the Forward Together program in 2020.

Lena Heilmann, the youth suicide prevention coordinator for the Colorado Department of Health, said Forward Together is intended to help parents and their children become more connected.

The website, forwardtogetherco. com, is separated into two sections, one for parents and the other for youth. The site encourages discussion, providing coping tools and ideas.

Heilmann said for those who feel suicidal, there is help and a way to get past the current crisis.

“When we are talking about suicide, it is a complex issue,” Heilmann said. “There is no one reason.

We know that connectiveness is the most powerful, empowering tool. We want to empower young people to identify a situation and make sure they seek support from a trusted adult.”

Forward Together is not about having a one-size-fits-all approach.

There are links for teens feeling alone, having problems with parents, struggling to fit in, in need of encouragement, or feeling depressed.

After clicking on the area that more closely ties with how a person is feeling, Forward Together provides a variety of tools to help the struggling adolescent cope, deal, and plan to get past dark days.

Heilmann said the Forward Together program is a good tool because it is so interactive.

For parents, the site provides ideas, conversation starters and resources on topics ranging from hobbies and conflict to substance abuse and mental health.

As with the youth page, parents can find help to deal with specific issues they are seeing in their children. From working to build better relationships to identifying risky behavior, the site provides tools and tips for parents to connect with their children.

The opening night fireworks show, which originally was slated to be cut this year, is back on thanks to a donation from a family foundation.

Hathaway said part of the fundraising dilemma is fierce competition for limited dollars, but she hopes Littleton residents and businesses are eager to join in celebrating community.

“We’re survivors,” she said.

“We want to show that we made it through a hard year and that Littleton is still strong. We’re so grateful for all the support out there, and we welcome more help.”

T

he Independence Day celebration at Belleview and Cornerstone parks on the Englewood and Littleton border on July 3 looked about like it has for many years.

The wind carried the scent of charcoal briquets and sunscreen.

Dutiful dads stood in long lines for sno-cones and funnel cakes. Children splashed in Big Dry Creek, building sand castles and skipping stones. As night fell, sparklers twinkled on the hillsides.

And yet, of course, this was the first Independence Day since last year, when life was upended in so many ways.

But 245 years since Americans first asserted their place in the world, as the fireworks boomed overhead, with cheeseburgers and Frisbees they demonstrated the tenacity that carried them through depressions and world wars and pandemics.

God bless ’em.

International Folk Art Market returns New Mexico event comes back after cancellation during pandemic year

As we contemplate possibilities for summer travel, some readers will be heading south to that favorite destination: Santa Fe, New Mexico. And perhaps some of those will want to visit IFAM, the International Folk Art Market.

It didn’t happen last year, but all artists accepted for IFAM 2020 were invited to participate in 2021, when Santa Fe’s International Folk Art Market will be held at the Milner Plaza on Museum Hill — for two weeks: July 7 to July 11 and July 14 to July 18, with different artists each week — and in keeping with COVID safe practices.

Tickets are sold at two-hour intervals and in some cases, are sold out, so we wanted to caution readers who plan to attend to visit folkartmarket.org in advance for information and reservations.

My memory of visiting this very special event is of just showing up and that’s not workable this year ... a maximum of 200 guests at a time will be able to visit the area. (And you’ll definitely want reservations for a place to sleep, as well.)

Mental health apps are confusing glut Only a tiny handful have been vetted, out of tens of thousands

trade in-person visits for the ease of online connection.

In the eyes of the tech industry, mental health treatment is an area ripe for disruption.

In any given year, 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience a form of mental illness, according to federal estimates. And research indicates only about half of them receive treatment in a system that is understaffed and ill distributed to meet demand.

For tech startups looking to cash in on unmet need, that translates into more than 50 million potential customers.

Venture capital firms invested more than $2.4 billion in digital behavioral health apps in 2020 — more than twice the amount invested in 2019 — touting support or treatment for issues from burnout and depression to ADHD and bipolar disorder.

At least seven mental health app companies have achieved “unicorn” status and are valued at more than $1 billion.

But even as industry hype mounts, researchers and companies are scrambling to prove these apps actually work. Of the estimated 20,000 mental health apps available for download on personal computers and smartphones, just five have been formally vetted and approved by the Food and Drug Administration, which largely has taken a hands-off approach to regulating the space.

“Development has really outpaced the science,” said Stephen Schueller, a clinical psychologist at the University of California-Irvine who specializes in the development and evaluation of digital mental health products.

Type “depression” or “anxiety” into an app store, and you’ll be met with a dizzying list of results. There are thousands of “wellness” apps like Headspace that counsel people

on breathing exercises and other techniques to help them feel more mindful. Apps such as Woebot and TalkLife profess to help manage conditions like anxiety and postpartum depression using games, mood journaling or text exchanges with peers or automated bots.

Some apps are meant to be used alongside in-person therapy, and others on their own. Several of the most popular, like Talkspace, BetterHelp and Ginger, promise access to treatment with a licensed therapist over text message, phone or video.

Others, including Brightside and Cerebral, connect users to psychiatrists who can prescribe antidepressants.

Most products make their money by charging consumers a monthly or annual fee, with the option to purchase extras like video sessions with a therapist. Others contract directly with employers or insurers.

And, yes, a small portion of these apps have promising research to back them up. Several studies, for example, have found that cognitive behavioral therapy, a mainstay of treatment for depression and anxiety that seeks to help patients change negative thought patterns, is as effective when delivered using web-based platforms as when done in person by a licensed professional.

And the pandemic has bolstered claims that patients are willing to

A step-care model, for example, would allow patients with milder symptoms to be treated via technology while reserving in-person care for patients who need something more.

The challenge for consumers is separating the apps that might help from those that offer little more than distraction — or could actually do harm.

Some companies offering mental health treatment had recently been doing something totally different — for example, an online seller of erectile dysfunction and hair loss treatments has started offering psychiatric evaluations and prescribing and selling antidepressants.

Tech companies are by nature forprofit and, in the rush to compete in a saturated market, many are selling a product with an appealing user interface but little evidence of effectiveness. A 2020 analysis

by Australian researchers reviewing nearly 300 apps for anxiety and depression found just 6% of the companies that boasted an evidence-based framework in the app store description for their products

had published any evidence.

Nor do star ratings and download totals offer much context: An April study from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School found little correlation between app store metrics and treatment quality.

“No one is competing based on privacy, safety or evidence. They’re competing on aesthetics, in part, on page ranking, marketing on brand awareness,” said Dr. John Torous, director of the digital psychiatry division at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and one of the authors of the April study. “There’s an implicit assumption that the app is better than nothing. But what if it isn’t better than nothing?”

One problem, said Dr. Ipsit Vahia, a geriatric psychiatrist and medical director of the McLean Institute for Technology in Psychiatry, is that randomized control studies of the kind that might prove an app’s effectiveness can take years, far slower than the rapid innovation in tech.

“In general, the health care industry and the technology industry work at very different paces,” Vahia said.

avoid patient harm. But he said some people in the mental health field are painting all companies with the same brush and failing to differentiate those that are datadriven from those trying to grow at any cost.

“They look at us and say we’re all VC-backed bros in a basement trying to redesign health care. And that’s not true. It may have been true 10 years ago, but it isn’t true today,” said Mou. The long-term winners, he said, will be those that are “evidence-based and measure quality like crazy.”

Cerebral offers online therapy and medication management and delivery for a range of mental illnesses. The monthly subscription fees range from $29 to $325, depending on the level and frequency of care, as well as insurance coverage.

Mou said Cerebral is already able to demonstrate some advantages.

While many top hospital systems might have a months-long wait for care, he said, someone in crisis can reach a Cerebral provider almost immediately. “Within minutes you are able to talk with someone with one of our instant live visits. That in itself is a huge win.”

Even critics of the tech explosion are quick to acknowledge that the current brick-and-mortar system of mental health is dated and inadequate. In recent years, the issues surrounding mental illness and lack of access to treatment have infiltrat-

July 8, 2021 ed public dialogue. Brain illnesses that many families once squirreled away from view have become the stuff of celebrity culture and dinner-table chatter.

Improvement difficult Yet even as advocates have made strides in acceptance, truly improving the lives of people with mental illness has proven stubbornly difficult. Over the past several decades — while the U.S. successfully lowered death rates for cancer, heart disease and other major illnesses — deaths by suicide and drug overdose have continued to climb.

Federal law theoretically requires insurance companies to cover brain illness as they would any other illness. But finding affordable care remains a challenge, largely because of a shortage of licensed mental health professionals and ongoing inequities in insurance coverage.

In a nation where huge swaths of the population lack a primary care doctor and health insurance — but most everyone has a cellphone — connecting people to treatment via mobile apps would seem a logical solution. And, for some, the opportunity to talk about their mental health challenges anonymously makes online treatment an attractive alternative.

Still, many of the experts who welcome the potential for innovation in mental health treatment acknowledge that consumers are getting little guidance in how to choose a reputable option. “Wellness” apps that promote a healthy lifestyle or apps that help people manage their disease without providing specific

treatment suggestions can avoid FDA regulation. But even those that offer patient-specific diagnoses and treatment recommendations that would seem to fall squarely under the FDA’s authority do not seem to garner the agency’s attention, according to industry experts.

“The FDA has been really, really lax on enforcing in digital health for reasons that are not entirely clear to me,” said Bradley Merrill Thompson, a lawyer at Epstein Becker Green who advises companies on FDA regulations. “Anybody could spend 20 minutes on the app store and find dozens of examples of apps that make medical device claims, and that have been doing so for some time, without any effort by the FDA to rein them in.”

In response to questions from KHN about its approach to regulating mental health apps, the FDA sent a brief statement. “As circumstances change and new needs arise, FDA is ready to meet and address these challenges, especially in the areas of mental health,” the statement reads in part. “We would like to see more evidence-based products in this area, which is why we remain committed to facilitating the development of additional safe and effective therapies for patients who rely on these products.”

Psychiatrist has unique view Dr. Tom Insel, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist, has a unique view of the evolving landscape. In 2015, Insel left his job as director of the National Institute of Mental Health, a post he had held since 2002, trading the halls of government for the open

floor plans of Silicon Valley to work in digital mental health. He started at Google’s Verily, then co-founded Mindstrong Health, a startup researching how smartphone technology could be used to predict and diagnose mental health crises. He has since left to advise California officials on behavioral health issues.

Insel said he believes in the promise of digital mental health but that it will take time to find its highest and best use. He noted, for example, that most of the apps on the market focus on the problem of access: They make care more convenient.

But they’re overlooking a more basic problem: quality. Unlike most fields of medicine, mental health providers rarely measure whether the care they provide makes patients better.

“A lot of what we need is not just more access. It’s not just recreating the brick-and-mortar system and letting people do it by phone or Zoom,” Insel said. Instead, he argued, digital health should focus on measuring whether treatments improve people’s lives.

“I have no doubt that this field will transform mental health treatment and diagnosis,” Insel said, “but we’re in the first act of a five-act play. I don’t think we’re anywhere near the kinds of solutions that we need in the real world.”

Their carrier, Southwest, is having some problems.

I remember the good old days when I’d hang around the railyards with my guitar and wait for an open freight car to come along. I’d jump on board and sing Woody Guthrie songs from here to Chi-town.

Well, maybe not.

But I do remember when I could drive to Stapleton, buy a ticket, and board a plane without being scanned, groped, sniffed, scrutinized or disrobed.

Air travel isn’t what it used to be and isn’t what it used to be two years ago.

Now there’s a good chance a passenger will decide he or she wants to beat up a flight attendant.

Theories abound.

These aerial skirmishes are a direct consequence of a period in American history when individuals, long thought to be willing to cooperate and act like adults, are now shedding that illusion and reverting to primordial behavior on flights, at NBA games and in fast food restaurants.

A recent incident at an Ohio McDonald’s devolved into an argument when a customer became irate and went berserk because an employee would not mix flavors of a slushy drink together.

The customer now faces assault charges.

Is it safe to leave your home?

Probably not, but what other choice do we have?

In the case of air travel: none. Unless you have your own jet or access to one.

What has become of us?

Something I began noticing in the mid-1990s led to an earlier retirement than I planned.

Disrespect in the classroom.

Students were more adversarial than ever, confrontational, and disputatious.

I was threatened and stalked.

There were no physical altercations, just verbal disputes that were out in the open.

Many led to grievances and hearings. The students who didn’t drop out were asked to leave.

Over what? Not always but most often: grades.

Grades replaced learning as the primary focus of many college students.

There was a time when grade disputes were addressed during office hours. Then they wicked into the classroom.

Now it seems disagreements with authority, rules and regulations —

reasonable ones too — have popped up in places where there didn’t exist before.

The Ohio woman went behind the counter, struck and injured two female McDonald’s employees.

At least the other customers could leave if they wanted to.

If the nutcake on Southwest 409 loses his grip, he’s performing to a captive audience.

“How was your flight, dear?”

“Oh, nothing out of ordinary.

We were diverted to Albuquerque because of an unruly passenger. Everyone had to deplane. The man was taken into custody. We reboarded two hours later. No big deal. Business as usual.”

“That’s nice, honey.”

Mark is a noted local wit. Hawaii has something to look forward to. I told him to take along a big supply of Hawaiian punch lines. Get it?

Time to put our heart back into it

hat is the simple secret, always take your heart to work.” - Meryl Streep There are many things that I have enjoyed about my WINNING journey through life. And one of WORDS those things has been meeting so many people and learning about what they do for a living, what their hobbies are, their family history, and where they are from.

Having traveled Michael Norton for most of my career I have shared many planes, trains, and automobiles with people who started out as strangers, but as we parted ways, we separated as friends and connected in some way.

What always stood out to me was the sense of pride, joy, and enthusiasm many of the people I met had about their work. I have met software developers working on a unique program to improve disease management, teachers and

professors who beamed when talking about their students, doctors, nurses, lawyers, bakers, athletes, actors, taxidermists, salespeople, CEOs, stay-at-home parents, and so many others that it is impossible to list them all here.

And as I look back on some incredible memories of my time spent traveling, I am most grateful for the conversations with my seatmates as they shared their passion and heart for the work they did. They always took their heart to work. They went to work with a servant’s heart. They saw themselves as more than an employee, consultant, or owner of a company. They saw themselves as being a difference-maker in some way.

I remember sitting on a flight with one maintenance worker who was employed at the same hospital for many years. He didn’t talk about the grind, or the hard work, or the long hours. His eyes shined and his smile widened when he spoke about the cleanliness of the rooms he cared for, his responsibility to do his part in saving lives. Yes, this man talked about his role in saving lives as he held himself personally account-

able for keeping “his” patients safe from any germs. Yes, he said, “His” patients. Wow! That is pride, joy, enthusiasm, and such an inspiring example of always taking our heart to work.

Today our supply chains are struggling in many cases because there are shortages of workers. Many have decided not to return to work right now. Maybe it’s because they don’t feel safe, some are worried about the virus, others about workplace safety, and sadly, many who would still rather receive unemployment benefits and stimulus dollars instead of going back to work. It is hard to bring our hearts to work when we aren’t going to work.

There are stories upon stories of our grandparents and great-grandparents and their tremendous work ethic. Almost all of us have heard the saying, “No matter what you do, do it to the best of your ability. If you are sweeping floors, be the best floor sweeper this world has ever known.” Whatever it is we are doing in life, when we do it with heart, we will feel so much better than finishing our day and just punching out.

Punching in and punching out each day is up to each one of us. If that is how we see our day, then it will be almost impossible to find joy at work. And I am not singling out any level of an organization or any specific job function. rules and adds a requirement that unvaccinated staff use medicalgrade masks.

Masks are now required for unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated patients, residents and visitors — and medical-grade masks are required for unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated staff — in the following settings that serve vulnerable or at-risk populations: • Homeless shelters; • Prisons and jails; and • Emergency medical and other health care settings.

All of the settings identified in the list above are “strongly encouraged to require all of their unvaccinated and not fully vaccinated staff to participate in COVID-19 testing,” the order’s text says.

That includes daily rapid testing every day that they work in the facility or setting, or once-weekly polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, testing.

Exceptions to the mask requirements include Coloradans 11 years of age or younger and those who “cannot medically tolerate” a face covering, the order says.

School case response rules lifted The updated order also repeals the requirement for schools to follow the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment guidance on outbreaks and other instances of COVID-19 cases.

Previously, the order said: “Schools and child care shall work with their local public health agencies as COVID-19 cases occur, and shall follow the CDPHE guidance for

Cases and Outbreaks in Schools and Child Care.” The guidance is listed at covid19.colorado.gov/cases-andoutbreaks-child-care-schools.

The lifting of that requirement means people who have close contact with a person with a positive COVID-19 test or symptoms generally no longer need to quarantine.

“Schools no longer need to adhere to the broader quarantine and isolation requirements in previous (public health orders),” said a statement from the Colorado State Joint Information Center, which takes questions for the state public-health department.

“However, state and local public health officials have statutory authority to institute quarantine and isolation as needed to stop the spread of disease. These officials may continue to require isolation of ill individuals and quarantine for individuals who are suspected to have COVID-19,” the statement said.

School districts and local public health agencies could make their own decisions as to whether to impose outbreak, quarantine or mask requirements that go beyond what the state mandates.

Local limits generally lifted The state’s color-coded COVID-19 dial was the set of restrictions counties had to follow based on the local spread of the virus. The system affected capacity at restaurants, other businesses, indoor and outdoor events, and other settings. Colorado originally implemented the dial last Sept. 15.

Colorado allowed the dial to expire as expected in mid-April, but health agencies in the Denver metro area extended the dial system locally as a rise in virus cases and the continued spread of COVID-19 variants kept health officials worried.

Since mid-May, several metro counties are now operating in what

they call “level clear,” generally with no local restrictions — and that’s likely to continue unless things take a turn for the worse.

A month and a half after Colorado let its dial expire, the state also lifted capacity restrictions on large indoor gatherings, a limit that had remained after the state dial’s end.

Colorado’s Public Health Order 20-20 remains in effect and includes requirements for nursing facilities, assisted living residences, group homes and other care facilities.

‘Snapback restrictions’ still possible A “snapback,” or return, to more state-imposed coronavirus restrictions could occur if hospitalizations rise high enough, according to a news release from the state publichealth department.

In counties whose resident hospitalizations threaten to exceed 85% of hospital or hospital system capacity, the state public-health department may require implementing additional restrictions, the public health order’s text says.

Enforcement Colorado’s COVID-19 public health orders are generally the kind that rely on voluntary compliance.

“Local authorities are encouraged to determine the best course of ac-

tion to encourage maximum compliance,” the text of the order says.

But failure to comply with the order could result in penalties, including jail time and fines, according to the order’s text.

Public transportation Nothing in Colorado’s order changes or repeals the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s order requiring the wearing of masks on public transportation, according to Colorado’s order. The CDC’s requirements are located at cdc.gov/quarantine/masks/masktravel-guidance.html.

Passengers on public conveyances — meaning airplanes, trains, subways, buses, taxis and rideshares — traveling into, within or out of the United States, as well as conveyance operators, meaning crew, drivers, conductors and other workers, regardless of their vaccination status, are required to wear a mask over their nose and mouth, according to the CDC’s website.

All people, including workers and members of the public, regardless of their vaccination status, are required to wear a mask in indoor areas of transportation hubs, meaning airports, bus or ferry terminals, and train or subway stations, in the U.S., according to the CDC’s website.

Gadgets and tricks to age in place

There are wearable devices; nonslip, suction, and silicone-based items that secure plates and bowls to the table; and alternate handle, weighted and larger handled utensils. Some of the more sophisticated gadgets include: 1. Robotic vacuum 2. Safety doorbells to view who’s at the door (even if you’re not home) 3. Voice activated devices like Alexa and Google Voice that turn on/ off, adjust and change lights/music/ temperature and more, call someone, and give you reminders 4. Smart watches with fall detection sensors can automatically alert someone 5. Medication systems that automatically dispense at the correct time Consider the weight, size, ease of use, safety and return policy when making a purchase. Understand your specific needs. A “lightweight” step ladder to one person may not be lightweight enough if you have pain, weakness, or other limitations.

Rounding up the cycling trails

If you’re new to the area, or just want to branch out, here’s a must-try list of some of the best rides around nicipal lots or parking spaces a bit east of the trailhead.

is the season for twowheeled adventure.

Lucy Hanna said she’s just visiting but couldn’t wait to hop on a bike — a loaner from her niece Claire — and check out the Clear Creek Trail.

“You have some beautiful trails out here,” she said. “This is the second time I’ve checked out a new ride since I’ve been here.”

She said it’s nothing like her rides back home in Louisiana.

“You can’t even really think about it (cycling) this time of year.

The humidity is just … I don’t know … oppressive,” she said.

Those of us lucky enough to call the metro area home have miles of trails to choose from. Throw in some of the lowest relative humidity in the nation and summer can be a downright pleasant time to go riding.

That said, here’s a list of some of the most popular places to get back on the bike and enjoy the fleeting summer months while you can.

Bear Creek Bike Trail You can pick up the trail near US 285 and River Point Parkway.

There are parking lots near the South Platte, where the Mary Carter Greenway Trail and Platte River Trail meet.

The trail, running alongside the Bear Creek corridor pretty closely, offers stunning views of the western foothills as you make your way through Bear Valley, Bear Creek Lake Park and ultimately into

Kipling West section of the Clear Creek Trail in Wheat Ridge.

Morrison.

According to reviews on TrailLink.com, the Bear Creek Trail is a relatively flat, easy ride that can be enjoyed by cyclists of all abilities.

On the west side of the trail, you can find parking along Morrison Road or one of the parking lots in downtown Morrison.

High Line Canal Trail Starting in Aurora and ending some 71 miles away in Roxborough Park, the High Line Canal Trail runs through the metro area’s southern suburbs. Along the way, you’ll go through Goldsmith Gulch, deKoevend Park and Horseshoe Park just to name a few, before the trail ends near Platte Canyon Reservoir.

From the Waterton Canyon Trailhead parking lot, it’s just a short distance to the High Line Canal Trailhead.

Starting from points east, consult

a trail map and follow municipal parking regulations.

Clear Creek Trail From Thornton to Golden, this 20-mile trail has a bit of everything.

A slight incline that tops out at just over 5,800 feet adds to the challenge, but the scenery is said by TrailLink reviewers, to be worth the effort. Included in the ride are views of North and South Table Mountain, thrown in for free. You’ll cut through a good chunk of Wheat Ridge and make your way between Prospect, Tabor and West lakes as you head toward I-70.

Historic Golden vibes abound as you cross Ford Street on your way to the trail’s end near Clear Creek Canyon Road, just east of Indian Gulch.

Cherry Creek Trail On the southeast side of town, the Cherry Creek Trail gives cyclists the opportunity to ride from Cherry Creek Reservoir to Downtown Denver.

At around 20-miles-long, the trail takes riders through some of the coolest urban areas in the city. Starting your ride near Confluence Park in Lodo, you’ll make your way along Cherry Creek as it ambles toward the southeastern suburbs, cutting through Glendale and Virginia Village before ending at Cherry Creek Reservoir.

For the super adventurous, the trail continues all the way to the small, rural, Franktown — another 20 miles south.

There are several rest stops along the route, with restrooms for those in need. And due to the proximity to the city center, it’s not unheard of to see inline skaters, folks on scooters or even e-bikes moving pretty fast, so be aware.

Veteran Denver cyclist Michael Lewis said he’s ridden most of the trails the city has to offer. He said he’s partial to the South Platte River Trail himself, but said for people just starting out, or those looking for a nice ride with a lot less distance involved, a lap or two around Sloan’s Lake or Washington Park is hardly ever a bad idea.

“There’s such a great cycling community here,” he said. “Almost everywhere you go, you’ll find people who just love to be out there (cycling).”

Olympics will feature debut of climbing Sport popular in Colorado could see effect of worldwide publicity

Climbing’s standing as a niche sport has always been a part of its appeal.

A rock wall can be a place of solitude or of camaraderie with a small group of fellow climbers. There are no crowds, just the peacefulness of the outdoors and the task of trying to find the best route to the top.

The climbing world could be in for a change after the Tokyo Olympics.

Climbing is an Olympic sport for the first time, and the spotlight will introduce a massive audience to what can be a lonely pursuit.

“For the most part, people were psyched,” American Olympic climber Nathaniel Coleman said.

“They knew the sport would get more attention, a lot more inflow of money and kind of be recognized as the high-quality sport that it is.”

The Olympics will be hosted July 23 through Aug. 8.

The inaugural climbing competition will include three disciplines: lead, bouldering and speed.

Lead is similar to what climbers encounter when scaling rock faces outdoors. Climbers have six minutes to climb a wall of about 15 meters with a variety of holds. Whoever climbs highest wins. Ties are broken by time.

In Bouldering, climbers have four minutes to complete each of four “problems” on 4.5-meter walls. The problems include overhangs, wedges and holds barely big enough to hold a fingertip. Some problems involve a “dyno” — jumping in a dynamic movement to the next hold — and occasionally going upside down is the best way up.

Climbers get as many attempts as they want within the time limit and receive credit for completing a boulder by securing the top hold with both hands in a controlled manner.

There are also zone holds midway up the wall where climbers can earn partial credit.

Speed climbing is a much more specialized discipline, the climbers

racing head to head up a 15-meter wall with standardized holds.

The inclusion of the speed discipline did not sit well within the climbing community.

The Tokyo Games will have two medalists — one for each gender — and the International Olympic Committee wanted to show a range of climbing skills, so it included speed in the overall competition.

Lead climbing and bouldering are more in line with what climbers face outdoors. Speed, not so much.

As one climber put it, adding speed is like asking a distance runner to compete in a sprint event.

Speed will be a separate medal event at the 2024 Paris Games.

“Speed climbing is very, very different from the other two disciplines,” said Meg Coyne, national team manager and assistant coach at USA Climbing. “First of all, it’s rehearsed. Second, all of the mannerisms, habits and techniques are effectively reversed. For athletes to do well on speed, they need to train for something that’s totally outside the habits they have for the other disciplines.”

Scoring is determined by multiplying each climber’s placement in the three disciplines. Lowest score wins.

If a climber is first in lead, second in bouldering and 10th in speed, their score would be 20 (1X2X10=20).

Winning a discipline will put a climber in good position to contend for a medal.

Adam Ondra has been called the world’s best climber and has tackled some of the most difficult outdoor routes around the globe. The wiry 28-year-old Czech known for screaming on the wall is not as strong in speed climbing, but is a threat to win both lead and bouldering.

Like Ondra, Janja Garnbret has completed outdoor routes most climbers wouldn’t even consider attempting.

The 22-year-old from Slovenia has won six world championships and is the only climber to go through an undefeated World Cup season, winning six events in 2019. She excels in lead and bouldering.

The United States joined France and host Japan as the only countries to qualify a full team of four climbers.

Nathaniel Coleman is sort of the de facto captain of the U.S. team, a laid-back climber who leads by example. The 24-year-old from Salt Lake City is considered one of the best American boulderers, but has evolved into a super all-around climber.

Collin Duffy will be one of the youngest athletes at the Tokyo Olympics. The 17-year-old Coloradan from Broomfield is an adept problem solver — he loves puzzles — and qualified for the Olympics as a sophomore in high school.

Duffy grew up climbing with Brooke Raboutou and now the two friends will be going to Tokyo together. The 20-year-old from Boulder comes from a climbing family and has become adept at all three disciplines.

Kyra Condie had 10 vertebrae fused together when she was 13 to correct scoliosis and has become one of the best climbers in the world. The 25-year-old from Shoreview, Minnesota, does not have the same mobility as other climbers, but makes up for it with problem solving.

Mountain Vista, Ponderosa capture baseball titles Valor delivers pitching gem, Ponderosa shows hitting prowess

Mountain Vista and Ponderosa claimed state baseball championships in different ways.

The Golden Eagles used strong pitching performances and smart base running to edge Valor Christian, 3-2, in the Class 5A championship game while Ponderosa just pounded out an 11-2 win over Holy Family in the 4A title contest.

Visa rode the pitching performances of senior starter Evan Ma gill and senior reliever Griffin Hart in the conquest over Valor Christian in the June 25 5A final game at Kelli McGuire Field at AllStar Park in Lakewood.

In semifinal games earlier in the day, the Golden Eagles (17-2) held on to down Fairview 6-4 while Valor Christian (18-5) advanced to the title game with a 10-1 romp over Fort Collins.

It was the second state title in three seasons for Vista who won the school’s first crown in 2018.

“The first one was special because it was the first one for Vista,” said Vista coach Ron Quinton. “This one was special because of the boys. This is a close group.

This was a different special because a lot of people counted these guys out.”

Both Vista and Valor each got four hits during the game but Ma gill dominated with his curve ball for six innings and Hart saved the victory with a one-two-three seventh inning.

Both Ma gill and Hart were freshman on the 2018 state title team.

“The curve ball was on, the fast ball was on, the slider was on and I didn’t throw a change up,” said Ma gill. “It was a good day. We won state. We worked all season for it.”

Valor took the lead in the top of the first on Blake Wilson’s two run double but Vista came back with a run in the bottom of the first on a RBI double by Tyler Meija who was 2-for-2 and hit by a pitch in the game.

Travis Sprinkle opened the bottom second inning with a infield hit and Trey Dunn walked. After three wild pitches which advanced the runners, both scored and the Golden Eagles grabbed a 3-2 advantage with just an infield hit during the frame.

Magill allowed four hits and struck out nine batters in six innings of work. Valor had a man on third base with one out after an error and wild catch in the sixth inning but Magill got a strike out and rightfielder Sean Marlow made a diving catch on a fly ball to retire the side.

“You’ve got to get the outs with one out,” said Magill. “I was happy to get the strikeout. I was thinking

curve balls, curve balls, curve balls because they were swinging right over them and right through them.

And the catch was amazing.”

Quintana said Marlow was following orders.

“The second baseman probably should have caught it because he was underneath it but my one rule is catch the ball,” he added.

“I don’t care how you catch it but catch it.”

it’s electric, or gets hot, does it have an auto shut-off or temperature limit? Check dimensions. Wheelchairs need to be wide enough to fit you and a winter coat, and high enough that you can easily get in and out of it. Walkers and wheelchairs need to be able to fit through doors and hallways, and allow you to turn in the bathroom. Will you be able to push it over carpet and outdoor surfaces? If it’s a used device, check that all parts are in good working order and secured.

Keep cell phones fully charged and flashlights handy. If your medical devices operate or recharge on electricity, inform your local fire department and utility company to prioritize you in the event of a fire or electricity outage. Maintain a three-day emergency stash of bottled water, working flashlights and fresh batteries, shelf-stable food you can open and eat without devices, important numbers written down, extra oxygen tanks if appropriate, blankets, and if possible, a threemonth supply of medications.

Stay in your best possible health.

Get regular vision and corrective glasses checks; visual problems cause many falls. Keep moving.

Parker Dennis and Carson Conant had two hits each for the Mustangs.
