Schools switch to online learning Decision follows prolonged period of worsening COVID-19 data, district says

There isn’t an Irish festival in downtown Englewood, but crowds may feel like they walked into one if Fennec is on the scene.

“We’ve been playing for about eight years here,” said John Hammer, sitting outside of Brewability brewery, formerly the location of the Brew on Broadway.

Englewood Public Schools has switched to fully remote learning for at least two weeks, effective Nov. 2, in the face of climbing COVID-19 numbers, Superintendent Wendy Rubin announced.

Englewood Schools agreed to offer in-person learning in the fall so long as Arapahoe County’s COVID-19 data stayed within reasonable levels, Rubin wrote in a letter posted to the district’s website.

“Unfortunately, the data has been trending in the wrong direction for a while now, and is below the threshold for us to continue in-person learning,” Rubin said.

Like many area districts, Englewood uses a point-based ranking to track COVID rates in Arapahoe County, keeping tabs on COVID test positivity rates on a 14-day average, daily hospitalizations, the 14-day incident rate per 100,000 residents and a three-day average of daily cases.

A minimum score of 4 is required to keep district schools open to in-person learning.

The scale slipped to 4 on Oct. 14, and has been at a score of 3 every day since Oct. 24, the district’s COVID tracker page shows.

State tightens COVID-19 rules for county Restaurants, other businesses, events, places of worship to be affected

As restrictions continue to escalate in the Denver metro area, the state public-health department announced that Arapahoe County is now under greater restrictions amid the growing spread of COVID-19.

On Oct. 28, Arapahoe County was moved to safer-at-home level 2, according to a release from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The changes affect capacity for businesses, restaurants, places of worship, and other activities and locations. Colorado’s safer-at-home order came after the statewide stay-at-home ended in spring. In mid-September, the state broke the safer-at-home policy into three levels that counties qualify for based on how dire the local virus’ spread is. If the trend becomes severe enough, counties may be moved back to stay-at-home orders.

Welcoming new members to our media family

I

n February 2012, my wife Ann and I acquired nine community newspapers from a Texas-based company, all in South Metro Denver and in two communities near FROM THE Colorado Springs.

PUBLISHER At that time, I had been recently brought in to manage several distressed community newspapers in Jefferson and Adams counties. I immediately merged all these newspapers into a new company that we named Colo- Jerry Healey rado Community Media. Over the past eight years we purchased the distressed newspapers and stabilized them. Guide helps parents of readers ask questions Dyslexia advocacy group partnered with firm to create resource

A 2019 state law toughened up rules on how Colorado schools teach reading — establishing new training requirements for teachers and placing guardrails on the kind of curriculum schools can use in kindergarten through third grade.

But for the average parent, figuring out if schools are using proven approaches to reading instruction and following the new state rules still isn’t easy. That’s why a statewide dyslexia advocacy group, in partnership with a local school improvement consulting firm, created a free online guide that parents and caregivers can use during discussions with teachers, principals or other school staff.

Officially called the Colorado Literacy Dialogue Tool for Parents/ Caregivers, the seven-page guide walks parents through key questions they should ask about reading instruction. In addition to listing words and phrases that indicate a school is using scientifically based materials and strategies, the guide also cites names and phrases that may raise red flags about a school’s approach.

The idea behind the tool is to help parents “traverse that educationese” and empower them to have real conversations about how schools

teach reading, said Amy Dobronyi, a Douglas County parent and co-chair of COKID, a statewide parent advocacy group for students with dyslexia. COKID partnered with Schools Cubed, a Colorado-based consulting group, on the tool. The groups created a similar tool for parents of children who attend private schools or schools outside Colorado.

Currently, the guides are only available in English, but leaders of the project say they’d like to get them translated into Spanish. In addition, Lucinda Soltero-González, assistant professor of literacy education at the University of Colorado-Denver, said she’d like to design something similar with a focus on reading instruction for English learners.

The answers compiled below come from the dialogue tool as well as other experts.

What are some key words parents should listen for?

The tool suggests parents ask for a description of the school’s “literacy block” — the part of the school day devoted to reading and writing. They should listen for phrases that suggest the school’s approach aligns to scientific research on how students learn to read. These include “research/ evidence-based,” “direct or explicit instruction” and “decodable text” — a book or passage that features specific phonics patterns students have learned.

What should raise red flags?

Schools may mention a variety of reading practices and approaches

HOW TO FIND THE GUIDE To find the free online guide that parents and other caregivers can use when asking educators about reading instruction, go to www.cokid.org, click on “Resources,” click on “Literacy Dialogue Tool & Curriculum Evaluation Tools,” then click on the link under “General Literacy Dialogue Tool.” that may indicate they don’t follow the science on reading instruction.

These terms include “balanced literacy,” “workshop model,” “leveled reader,” and “guided reading.”

The parent tool also warns parents about two popular reading programs that aren’t aligned with science: Lucy Calkins — officially known as Units of Study for Teaching Reading — and Fountas and Pinnell. Both are popular in Colorado and around the country.

What other questions should parents ask?

The tool suggests parents ask if the school’s main reading program is on Colorado’s approved list and states “the answer should be YES.” The state’s recently revised list includes six English-language reading programs approved for K-3 core instruction. They are Core Knowledge Language Arts, Open Court Reading, Wonders, Into Reading, Benchmark Workshop, and The Writing Road to Reading.

Four other programs are approved for K-2 core instruction: Benchmark Advance, Collaborative Literacy, EL Education, and Superkids Reading Program.

State reviewers rejected several

reading programs last spring, though many schools are still using them.

They include Lucy Calkins, Fountas and Pinnell Classroom, and Reach for Reading.

The two Spanish-language core reading curriculums approved so far are Maravillas and Arriba la Lectura.

My child is on a READ Plan. What do I need to know?

Parents with children on READ Plans — a state-mandated improvement plan for students whose reading skills are well below grade level — should ask what intervention program the school uses to help struggling readers, how often students get focused help, and which staff members deliver the help.

As it does for core programs, the parent tool highlights several interventions that are state-approved, including Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, 95% Group, and Blast. The tool also mentions programs the state has deemed unacceptable but that some schools still use, including Fountas and Pinnell, and Leveled Literacy Intervention, which is often referred to as LLI. My child is an English learner. What should I ask the school about reading instruction?

International observers tour Arapahoe election facility In difficult year, pro-democracy group says county process seems smooth, advanced

Amid one of the most challenging elections in living memory, international elections observers toured Arapahoe County’s elections warehouse on Oct. 28, part of ongoing efforts to monitor how the work of the republic is achieved.

Representatives of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly toured the county’s sprawling election facility in west Littleton, one of two stops the pair made in Colorado.

The OSCE, an Austrian-based coalition of 57 nations founded in 1975, promotes causes including human rights, freedom of the press and fair elections. The organization’s Parliamentary Assembly began monitoring international elections in 1993, and has observed American presidential elections consistently since 2004 under an agreement with the federal government.

The organization won’t release its final report on the 2020 election until after Election Day, but an interim report released on Oct. 22 expressed concern about how the election was being handled nationally, citing voter

PHOTO BY DAVID GILBERT disenfranchisement concerns, shaky new election processes in many states, disorganization in federal election oversight, the potential for postelection violent political unrest and President Donald Trump’s repeated allegations of mass voter fraud, which the organization fears will call the legitimacy of the election into question.

Despite the challenges, things seem to be going smoothly so far in Arapahoe County, the observers said.

Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder Joan Lopez and county elections director Peg Perl walked Andreas Baker, the assembly’s head of elections, and Kari Henriksen, the assembly’s vice president and a member of the Norwegian parliament, through each step in the process of receiving, processing

and counting ballots.

Baker said he previously toured Arapahoe County’s facility in 2008, several years before Colorado instituted statewide mail ballots.

“Colorado has a robust practice of early mail voting,” Baker said. “We thought it would be interesting to see how far ahead in the process a county can be. There are a lot of jurisdictions in the country where they haven’t been able to do many of the steps we’ve seen today.”

Colorado’s elections process mails every registered voter a ballot weeks ahead of the election and allows them to return it by mail or drop box, or vote in person. Baker called it “a huge operation. It’s interesting to see the mechanics of how it comes together.”

Arapahoe County, the state’s third most populous, was part of a nationwide surge in early voting, Perl told the observers.

Lopez said she hoped the observers saw Arapahoe County as a model.

“I hope they take away how secure, safe and welcoming our process is for every voter in Arapahoe County,” Lopez said. “There’s no reason not to vote — not in Colorado.”

Lopez said rampant misinformation about voting is among the biggest challenges faced by local elections officials, and urged voters to seek out reliable sources of information — not memes on social media.

Perl said she hoped the observers saw Arapahoe County’s processes as a solid integration of technology and policy goals to ensure secure and straightforward elections.

Though the OSCE normally sends about 100 elections observers to the United States, they sent about half that many this year, as they navigated the complications of travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organization’s observers haven’t received a warm welcome in some parts the country. OSCE observers were barred from observing North Carolina’s election process this year, and states including Arizona, Florida and Ohio ban international observers.

In 2012, Texas Governor Greg Abbott threatened OSCE monitors with arrest if they attempted to enter Texas election facilities.

“Our goal,” Henriksen said, “is to help develop democracies in a peaceful way, and to help them be more open and transparent.”

The band usually plays indoors but brought its lively, string-instrument tone outside, wearing masks on a cool afternoon.

The band first came together roughly 10 years ago because Hammer heard that a Douglas County library liked to have music in its building.

“But it turned out we were a little too much for the room — people thought we were a little too noisy,” Hammer said.

Hammer also leads a “beginner-intermediate” session at the Swallow Hill Music nonprofit just north of Englewood, near Broadway, to encourage people to get together and play. His band has performed at the Molly Brown House Museum near downtown Denver and can also be heard at other area bars, such as Clancy’s and the Celtic on Market, Hammer said.

Hammer got his start in music playing saxophone in elementary school and kept playing in band in high school and into college. Eventually, he ended up working at AT&T and learned that his coworkers got together to play bluegrass music — a genre with links to Celtic music, said Hammer, who played mandolin at the time.

Fennec takes bookings for “accompaniment (and) background music for special events and occasions,” according to its website.

“We just enjoy playing together, and we like each other’s company — we seem to get along pretty well, and people seem to enjoy listening to us as well,” Hammer said.

“That’s kind of a special thing to us.”

A few members played alongside Hammer in early October in an outdoor dining area beside the brewery.

“We all come here,” said Jeannie Weis, a Fennec guitar-player, “because it’s the place to be.”

Ex-Broncos player pleads not guilty to assault in Douglas County Cody Latimer’s trial is set for March 2021

A former Denver Broncos player who was arrested in May in Douglas County has pleaded not guilty to four felonies and four misdemeanors related to the incident.

Cody Latimer, 28, who was on the Washington Football Team until he was cut in August, called into his virtual arraignment in Douglas County on Oct. 30.

His trial is set to take place from March 15-17 Latimer of next year.

The charges against Latimer — including second-degree assault, menacing and tampering with evidence — stem from a physical altercation that began after a friend of Latimer’s hosted a poker party at the Zenith Meridian Apartments near Lone Tree, according to testimony in earlier hearings.

Deputies responded to the apart-

ment complex on May 15 at about midnight after hearing reports of arguing and shots fired. Once on the scene, deputies learned that Latimer and his friend got into an argument after a man at the party was seen sitting “uncomfortably close” to Latimer’s son.

The defense and prosecution have provided conflicting versions of what happened inside the apartment, with the prosecution painting Latimer as the aggressor and the defense arguing that the former NFL player was actually a victim.

When asked about pre-trial motions in the case, Latimer’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, said he will require three hours to get through his materials.

Judge Patricia Herron responded by asking if the motions would really require that much time.

“We have some major issues of misconduct in this case, so yeah,” Steinberg said.

A request for additional comment from Steinberg on the allegations of misconduct in the case was not immediately answered.

Latimer, a wide receiver, was a second-round draft choice by the Broncos in 2014 and was on the Denver team that won the Super Bowl in February 2016.

It goes without saying, but they say it anyway

“W

ell, I swear,” is an obsolete expression that was a way of swearing without swearing.

Believe it or not, QUIET four-letter words DESPERATION were once impermissible in films.

Now it would be almost impossible to find a film other than one of Disney’s or Hallmark’s that wasn’t filled with them.

It belongs at a 10-year-old slumCraig Marshall ber party, but one Smith of Ellen’s (many) idiotic bits involves the determination of a celebrity’s favorite curse word.

Guess which one is most popular?

Hint: It’s said 506 times in “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

I swear at home, but not when I leave the house.

My swearing is never directed at someone. It’s directed at something, such as a remote control that is playing hide and seek.

Now and then when I can’t open crackers I’ll say something profane.

I don’t know how Charles Dickens managed without four-letter words. His novels would have been so much better.

If you tried to play a game of shots watching “Good Will Hunting,” waiting for one four-letter word in particular, you’d be legally drunk by the time Will meets Skylar.

As is true with many overused words, four-letter words have innumerable synonyms as well as slang terms.

W. C. Fields, unable to curse on film during the Hayes Code era, came up with “Godfrey Daniel” and “Mother-of-pearl,” said with equal force and conviction.

However, when it comes to expletives, most of us don’t look around for creativity, and go straight to the most common and most familiar.

Not knowing (or caring) that each time it depletes the impact.

More than once, I was told the unthinkable by college students.

There was a time it would have

meant expulsion.

Walking across campus one day behind members of our men’s basketball team, I realized they only knew about nine or 10 words.

Guess?

One screenwriter and film director was chided for the number of profanities in one of his films: “Glengarry Glen Ross.”

So David Mamet wrote and directed a film with none. Can you name it?

There are PG films that feature foul-mouthed kids. In PG-13 and R, shut the door.

Watching “The Bad News Bears” in 1976 I asked myself, “Did I talk like that in Little League”?

“No” was the answer.

Where would some music be if not for profanities? It’s too bad the Beatles and Bob Dylan didn’t take advantage of the allowances made for every perceivable vulgarity.

Go ahead and swear. Now and then there’s nothing more satisfying.

But over and over and all the time, it’s tiresome and dumb.

Some readers might respond to this commentary with one finger,

raised in my direction, as a nonverbal expletive, as it were.

The omniscience of the middle finger as a gesture of obscenity is equal and concurrent with uttered profanities, and can be witnessed almost everywhere.

Why not?

We’re easily offended and disrespected. In some parts of the country, however, disrespecting someone won’t be settled with curse words or fingers.

But with guns.

Curse words or curse words and guns are requisite in the scripts of just about every contemporary film.

Who wants to see a film that doesn’t have any dirty words or people getting shot?

It would be un-American, wouldn’t it?

Here’s column number 600: Where do I stand?

here hope begins.

Over the last 12 years, I have now written 600 published columns. AdWINNING ditionally, I have posted thousands WORDS of messages through social media and have been on podcasts, radio interviews, and have appeared as a keynote speaker numerous times here in the states as well as around Michael Norton the globe.

I continue to be humbled by these opportunities to connect with you. So first, let me say thank you to all of you who send me emails and messages, I sincerely appreciate you all and love our exchanges. Happily, most of our exchanges are extremely positive, after all the column is called “Winning Words.” There is a percentage of our readers who love to challenge me on a thought or an idea that I had shared, and in most cases, it is a very healthy and engaging dialogue. And then there are a few people who try and

provoke an argument, all I can say is that sometimes we just have a difference of opinion.

So here in column number 600, I wanted to answer a couple of questions, and sometimes concerns, that I have received from our community. I am often asked why I have not taken a stance or a position on a sensitive topic. Some even suggesting that my silence must clearly define how I really feel or intimating that I have always stayed right down the middle, not choosing sides so that I do not offend anyone. And a part of this is very true as my goal is never to offend anyone but to encourage everyone.

Regardless of what has been happening in our community and in our country, my column has remained consistent. Winning words, that’s it. My attempt each week is to inspire hope and motivate top performance. I take all other issues off the table. This is when I receive questions like, “How do you feel about …?” Or “What do you think of …?” And “Where do you stand on …?” You can probably guess this last and most common question over the past two months, “Who are you voting for?”

I am writing this column on Oct.

28, 2020. The column that you read each week is written one week in advance so the editors can do what they do so brilliantly to bring it to life. That means as I am writing this, I have no idea who won the election or if anyone has been declared a clear winner. So, I will go ahead and tell you that reluctantly I did cast my vote for one of our presidential candidates, and I say reluctantly because God was not listed on the ballot I received, was He on yours?

Now that probably answers the other question too, “Where do I stand?” Where I stand is by my faith and I stand with all of you as well. Your faith may be different than mine, awesome. Your political party may be different than mine, fantastic. You may drink craft beer and I drink a simple lager, how cool is that? You may enjoy a vegan diet, and I am a carnivore, we can both find something on the menu. The important topics where we differ in our beliefs and opinions may be much bigger than these examples, but that does not mean we get to quit on each other.

Where do I stand? My belief is that as a society we cannot buy into the fact that we are too far gone, or that the chasm between

us is so wide that we can’t become united again. Some might say that I am being naïve, and that is okay too as we are entitled to our opinions. Other sources might want us to believe that our society cannot be repaired. And that is just not true.

I am right in the middle of unconditional love, unconditional forgiveness, kindness, gentleness, compassion, generosity, goodness, encouragement, opportunity, justice, equality and benevolence.

how the share of English learners on READ Plans compares with the share of native English speakers on such plans. If there’s a big difference, parents should ask what teachers are doing to address that disparity.

Statewide, about 16% of K-3 students struggle enough with reading to qualify for a READ Plan. The rate for English learners is higher: 19% for students classified as having some English proficiency and 43% for students classified as non-English proficient.

Soltero-González, of University of Colorado-Denver, said emerging bilingual children may have little problem decoding English words, but still may not understand the text because they don’t know what the words mean.

“That’s why it would be very important there’s attention to the development of oral language ... and vocabulary, along with word recogni-

tion and decoding,” she said.

What else should parents of English learners be looking for?

School staff should convey to parents that using the family’s primary language — whether in routine conversation, storytelling, or singing at home — will help students gain skills for reading.

Gloria Corral, president and CEO of the California-based Parent Institute for Quality Education, said too often parents absorb messages that speaking with children in their home language instead of English will confuse them or create educational barriers.

“We really talk to families about how keeping home language, enriching home language is, in fact, a (reading) strategy.” she said. “That is not, sadly, a widely known, and certainly not a widely promoted strategy in a lot of school districts, or a lot of schools.”

What should I ask about in terms of teacher training?

Experts say good quality reading curriculum and intervention pro-

grams are important, but they must be paired with teacher training.

That’s why the parent tool suggests asking whether teachers have satisfied a new state rule requiring 45 hours of training in the science of reading. In lieu of taking an approved class, teachers can also get credit by passing a test on reading instruction or earning a Colorado reading teacher or reading specialist endorsement.

Since Colorado’s K-3 teachers have until next August to meet the requirement, it’s possible some won’t have gone through the training yet, but they may have a plan in place.

What should I do if my child’s teacher or principal provides answers to my question that indicate they’re not using approaches aligned to science?

Experts and advocates say this is tricky territory. Obviously, some parents might take such answers as a nudge to go shopping for a different school. But not everyone has that option and no one wants to become “that parent” for asking too many questions or disputing educators’ knowledge.

“There’s concern about sending parents into something that could feel kind of hostile,” said Dobronyi, of COKID. But she and other advocates say parents don’t always have to go it alone. PTAs, school accountability committees, and even school boards can use the parent tool to pose questions and hold discussions about reading instruction with school or district officials.

Stephanie Stollar, a consultant who helped the Colorado Department of Education develop the tool to review reading curriculum, recommended parents take a “let’s learn together” approach when asking educators for answers.

“It has to be a collaborative effort.

It can’t be, ‘We know better than you — you’re wrong.’”

Events of 2020 put spotlight on demographics of industry

This year’s Great American Beer Festival was held in a virtual format in October.

he craft beer industry — like much of America — is facing a reckoning on two levels right now: A pandemic ended more than a decade of growth well short of the industry’s goal to become 20% of the national beer market by 2020 and a racial justice movement highlighted craft brewing’s dominant white male culture and lack of diversity.

The combination led to sobering conversations within the craft beer community at a time the industry typically would have gathered in Denver for a toast at the annual Great American Beer Festival.

The Boulder-based Brewers Association that hosts the festival canceled the nation’s largest beer tasting event this year — and it expects to do the same in 2021 — because of the coronavirus outbreak. Instead, GABF moved into a virtual format in October with the presentation of the much-coveted awards.

The diversity of beers entered into the annual competition surpasses the racial diversity in the craft beer workforce and community. The problem is not new, but the focus on the issue amplified earlier this year amid the Black Lives Matter protests and demands from consumers for more significant change within the beer industry.

“I think our trade was slow to think about diversity, and that’s not good,” said Marty Jones, an industry veteran and beer marketer. “But I’m glad it’s become a topic because we have dropped the ball on being a more welcoming trade.”

Lopsided numbers In Colorado, more than 400 breweries are operating, and just three are Black-owned — Novel Strand and Hogshead in Denver, and Outworld in Longmont. Spangalang Brewing in Denver is in the process of adding a partner, who is Black. In addition, about 10 breweries in Colorado are Latino-owned or focused. The numbers fit national figures from 2018 showing 1% of small and independent breweries are Black-owned and 2.4% are Latino-owned.

The Brewers Association — the trade group that represents independent small brewers across the country — began a program to address the lack of diversity in 2017 that included hiring a diversity ambassador and a grant program. But it took more significant steps in July after facing criticism for not doing enough to address racism actions among its membership.

In mid-June, three weeks after George Floyd’s death in police custody, the association posted a message to social media stating it “stands in solidarity against racial injustice.”

“We strive to create an inclusive community that feels safe and welcome. We will take a stand, we will listen, and we will learn,” the statement continued.

The words didn’t satisfy critics who wanted the organization to take a stronger stand against breweries that use insensitive names for beers or face allegations of racial discrimination. On the other side, the association’s leaders said they lost some members because of the decision to speak out.

In an interview last week, Bob Pease, the association’s president and CEO, defended the association, saying it did “quite a bit” to address diversity in recent years. But he also acknowledged “we were a little bit slow on uptake with the killing of (George) Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.”

“We all want a more diverse and equitable craft beer community,” he continued. “And we all have more work to do. We are committed to doing the work.”

Changes in rules In July, the association amended its bylaws to allow for the removal of a member — a provision missing entirely in the prior governing documents. In August, the association introduced a new code of conduct for its members designed to “eliminate discrimination, harassment, and bias of all types.” And in September, the association outlined a grievance process that its professional members can use to police other breweries for violations of the code of conduct.

“We have seen and heard the criticisms and questions surrounding the Brewers Association’s silence regarding racism among its members. We hear you,” Pease said in a July statement announcing the new changes.

“Our limited public response to date has not been sufficient for many but it does not equate to apathy.”

The conversations about race and di-

versity in the craft brewing industry come at a difficult time.

Earlier in the pandemic, industry outlooks suggested that 60% of breweries wouldn’t survive to June.

Those dire predictions proved too pessimistic, as some breweries were able to get financial help or adapt to meet the to-go market, but still more than a dozen have shuttered in Colorado.

The situation remains tenuous, particularly for breweries that built their business on the taproom model selling beers across the bar rather than packaging their beer for sale at retail outlets.

In 2019, craft beer volume amounted to 13.6% of the U.S. market, well short of the goals set years earlier in part because of acquisitions from larger brewers.

So far in 2020, overall sales are down about 10%, but breweries’ sales onpremise decreased 40%, the Brewers Association said.

The association is feeling the pinch, too. The cancellation of its events — the Craft Brewers Conference, Homebrew Con and GABF, among others — because of public health concerns cost the organization about 70% of its annual revenue and led to 23 layoffs, or about 35% reduction in staff. The job cuts led to an outcry from brewery guilds across the country and even more criticism of Pease directly regarding his salary and recent hiring decisions.

Other cutbacks included reductions in research spending and the temporary elimination of grant programs, including the one focused on diversity.

Despite the setbacks, Pease is quick to say the association “is here to stay.”

The tightened budget and a financial nest egg built from surpluses in recent years will keep it going at a diminished level. “We are resilient. We are scrappy, just like our members. We are adapting. We are improvising,” he said. “But like many of our members, we have been wounded by the pandemic for sure.”

How quickly it bounces back de-

pends on when in-person events like GABF come to life. The association engaged beer fans with a passport to deals at breweries across the nation for $20, but it won’t amount to a fraction of the normal revenue.

“If and when the world gets back to normal — and I say that with a big `if ’ because who knows what the new normal will look like — but if large events do come back — and we are thinking at this point 2022 at the earliest — we will be fine. We will be right back growing again,” Pease said.

Breweries take action In Colorado, the Black Lives Matter movement inspired action on the part of breweries. WeldWerks Brewing in Greeley donated $10,000 to the local Black Lives Matter chapter and Campaign Zero to end police brutality.

And dozens participated in the Black is Beautiful collaboration brew that benefited local social justice charities.

“Breweries in Colorado recognize it’s not only a lack of diversity in customers but a lack of diversity in staff and how can they create pipelines to address that,” said Shawnee Adelson, the executive director of the Colorado Brewers Guild.

Station 26 Brewing in Denver partnered with Regis University earlier this year to create a diversity scholarship for underrepresented students to complete the school’s brewing certificate program. The first recipients will be named in 2021.

“The brewing industry is not very diverse,” said Matthew Peetz, the director of the program. “It’s mostly white males, and I think that every industry benefits from a diversity of opinions and background.”

Odell Brewing in Fort Collins recently hired a person to coordinate its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts to address the hiring process as well as educate staff.

Wynne Odell, the brewery’s cofounder and a member of the Brewers Association’s board of directors, said the criticism aimed at the brewing industry was a factor, but “it was also all of us waking up in our own organizations and realizing this is a more immediate concern.”

Jones, the veteran beer industry leader, sees this moment as an opportunity.

“It’s only natural that it would become an issue in craft beer. Everyone is taking a look at themselves and wondering if they could do more,” he said.

He added: “What better way to bring people together and find common ground than to talk politely over a couple beers?”

Littleton-area musician’s album on streaming services ‘SAME SHIrT, DIFFERENT DAY’ was released Oct. 23

anymore, but I had the idea it was what I had to do to pay some bills ...”

He figures his present location, close to the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, is a good choice for a guy who sees his future as a musician instead.

Rice graduated from West Virginia University in 2010 after starting a day job sitting on a rig in 2008, alternated with an office job with the oil company.

For a while, he worked on rigs and in an office in West Texas, where he had a chance to see more major music figures, in addition to Prine and Shaver.

Rice’s wife, who has family in Littleton, Highlands Ranch and Boulder, is a geochemist and Rice “has geology friends in town ...” But there “are no geology jobs” here at this time and Rice is concentrating on this, his second release — with the same band as his first album.

“I chipped away at it for about two years — one piece at a time,” he says, continuing on about how much he “loves going into a studio in Austin and playing live with studio musi-

Rodney Rice, a resident of the Ken Caryl area west of Littleton, developed an interest in music at an early age, he says, as he “pillaged my older sister’s CD and tape collection ... She took me to see John Prine. It was the first concert I went to ...” They sat in the back row. Prine “captivated” the young fan and a story began.

Rice’s recent (Oct. 23) release of his own work, “SAME SHIrT, DIFFERENT DAY,” recorded with a band in Austin, Texas, is now available, streaming from Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and more.

The record case lists personnel on each song in the album. Rice is always there on acoustic guitar and vocals as is Rick Richards on drums, but then on some there is a horn part with sax and trumpet and on another, a Hammond organ chimes in. On “Free At Last,” we find a fiddle and a dobro included. Bassist David Carroll’s name appears often, as does multiinstrumentalist Andre Moran, whose studio is the production location every time.

Rice recently appeared at Golden’s well-known country spot, Buffalo Rose, and is focusing on publicizing the release, since, as he puts it: “There are no geologist’s jobs or music gigs here right now ...”

He has enjoyed the beautiful Colorado Trail and been “fly fishing a lot.”

He rides his bike at all times of year and will “stay positive, keep the eyes and ears open” and hope people will discover his music.

Rice’s favorites? “Memoirs of Our Youth” and “Ain’t Got a Dollar.”

Boy Scouts take strides for those less fortunate Led by champion fundraiser Josiah Myers, the boys of Troop 36 trudge the trails

For most Americans, food is often no farther away than the refrigerator.

But for people in the developing world, getting something to eat or drink can require walking miles a day.

Those are the people on Josiah Myers’ mind every year as he undertakes the annual CROP Hunger Walk, in which participants walk miles as part of fundraising efforts to feed the world’s hungry.

Myers, 12, has been participating in the walk since he was 4, becoming the star fundraiser of the Littleton chapter — now called the Foothills CROP Walk.

This year, he brought along some friends: his fellow Boy Scouts of Troop 36, who trudged five miles up Waterton Canyon on Oct. 24 to recognize struggles faced by people far less fortunate — with several of the boys carrying gallon water jugs to symbolize how far people in the developing world must walk for clean water.

“So many people in the world face hardships and hunger, and it’s easy for people who have food to forget,” Myers said. “I’m just trying to do what I can for them.”

“This problem is global, but also very much local,” said Megan Rudolf, who coordinates the Foothills chapter with her sister Michelle. “We have people in our city who are homeless.

We have kids going hungry.”

Rudolf said Myers is consistently

a top fundraiser for the group, and this year she challenged him to raise $5,000. She lined up a matching grant of $2,500, meaning Myers was on the hook for the other half. He was at $1,730 by the time the walk started, and had until Nov. 10 to raise the rest.

The money, Rudolf said, will go to help a variety of groups, including some that combat hunger locally including the Action Center, Love INC

and Sharing with Sheridan.

Myers has a consistently giving spirit, said his mom Kim Myers — he came up with the idea to keep chickens and sell their eggs to raise money for an Ethiopian child he sponsors.

“I’m just really thankful to have so many people walking with me this year,” Myers said. “It means a lot, and hopefully it means something to hungry people too.”
