Teen gets seven years in youth prison for role in murder

21-year sentence will be suspended if youth offender program completed BY ELLIS ARNOLD EARNOLD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Families chose their own schedule as the activities could include a ride around the park on the miniature train, a visit with Santa, time in Santa’s workshop or warming by wood fires while making s’mores. Holiday lights were everywhere. Strings of lights draped the train depot and children’s farm barn, the miniature train as well as numerous trees around the station and along the train’s route. On Dec. 9, there was a line of people waiting to board the miniature train for the one-mile trip around the edge of the park. When the waiting passengers were seated, the engineer sounded the horn and rang the bell as the train pulled out of the

A teenager charged with the second-degree murder of a chef in Englewood effectively received a seven-year sentence in a youth prison program after pleading guilty in criminal court. “I am really sorry that my actions caused the death of your son,” said Louis Fernando LaraMacias, 17, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Oct. 19, as family and friends of the victim sat in court Dec. 7. “I want to make a change.” Lara-Macias, of Englewood, was suspected of helping Raheem Vaughn Benson, of Littleton, commit the fatal shooting of Nicholas Lewis, a 33-yearold chef at the Blackbird Public House restaurant in Denver. Lewis was shot to death the night of Oct. 1, 2016, in the 3000 block of South Acoma Street, about a block from his home. He was walking home from the nearby 7-Eleven, authorities said. “The victim got off work, walked to a local convenience store and as he left, he was looking at his phone,” Rebecca Gleason, a prosecutor with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, said in court. “That was enough to attract the attention of LaraMacias, and he directed (Benson) to rob him and gave him the gun.”

The Belleview Park area in and around the miniature train station underwent a major makeover as it became the home of the Englewood Holiday Express on Dec. 8 and 9 and again on Dec. 15 and 16. The area of the park that is normally dark and quiet became a beehive of activity. The darkness gave way to the glow of an abundance of multicolored lights and a few wood-fueled fires.
