he smell from food trucks filled the area, music could be heard from blocks away and smiles were everywhere. Englewood was rockin’ and rollin’ on Sept. 28 as the city hosted its Englewood Block Party. The party shut down the 3400 block of South Broadway from 3 to 9 p.m. as residents packed the area. The free event featured music, food and local business booths. The city estimates that at least 6,000 people attended the party. “I would’ve never pictured something like this happening in Englewood. It’s great to see the city doing cool things like this now,” said Francisca Garcia of Denver. She hadn’t been to Englewood in a few years, she said. Music from performers like Bri-

anna Straut, Porlolo, iZCALLi, Oxeye Daisy and Gora Gora Orkestar kept the party going throughout the day. Food from trucks like Top Dawg Sausages, Steady Smoking BBQ, California Wrap Runner and other vendors were on deck to give attendees plenty of options. “It’s great to bring the community all together and celebrate Englewood. It couldn’t be any better,” said Bill Ryan, an Englewood resident. The party originally started in 2017 as a way to support local businesses and to give residents a free day of fun and entertainment. “I think it’s great, and I’m thrilled to see that we’re actually doing something to get the community going and support all of the businesses here along Broadway,” said Judy Browne, who has lived in Englewood since 2008.

Porlolo was one of many performers who took the stage at Englewood’s Block Party all throughout the day. The event featured music, food and more.

Englewood residents will not elect school board members this fall — because there are no candidates to vote on. Englewood Schools announced there would be no school board election this year as only one candidate filed for one of two open seats. That candidate, Gary Manfre, will officially be sworn in on Nov. 6, says Wendy Rubin, superintendent for Englewood Schools. The board will go through an application and interview process to appoint the other board member, hopefully by mid-November. “From a community standpoint, you wish more people would want to be involved. It’s just tough to see that,” Manfre said. Manfre has five children who are going to school in the district and has lived in Englewood since 2009. School board members Kevin Ebert and Sharon Scheminske have decided to step away from SEE BOARD, P11
