If the final destination isn’t too far away from his Englewood house, Wayne Canaban prefers to ride his bicycle. But last year as he was riding through Denver during the evening, he was hit by a car. The accident left him with a painful broken collarbone.

“A lot of days you see those bumper stickers that say to share the road. It has a lot to do with the people who are driving and watching out for cyclists,” Canaban said on a hot August day at the South Platte River Trail in Englewood.

Canaban said he would like to see Englewood add more bicycle lanes, and that’s been in the works in the city recently.

Englewood is planning to install signs and roadway striping for bicycle lanes in each direction along Dartmouth Avenue. The project will also feature bike lanes that extend between Inca Street and University Avenue.

A proposal to redevelop the old Kmart site just inside the southern edge of Englewood went before the city council in a public hearing on Aug. 19, and councilmembers are expected to hold their first vote on the plan Sept. 3.

The William Warren Group, envisioning a retail and restaurant cluster at the site to be called The Hive on Broadway, is seeking a zoning change that would permit self-storage on the west side of the building to provide the financial stability to market the rest of the redevelopment.

Before the Aug. 19 public hearing to discuss the request for a planned unit development at the former Kmart site at 200 W. Belleview Ave., Dustin Jones took the mic to address Englewood City Council during regular public comment.

Jones, vice president of acquisitions for Ogilvie Properties, the organization that purchased the former Sports Authority corporate headquarters in Englewood, talked about the CubeSmart Self Storage units that occupy part of the site. He said there

are around 880 self-storage units at the 1090 W. Hampden Ave. property, but only 61 percent of those units are occupied. “(The old Kmart) is a great site with tremendous opportunities for a higher and better use than its most recent life as Kmart. We understand as well as anyone the need to adapt to realities that impact potential uses as well as the market for a particular site,” Jones said before the hearing, questioning whether the market for self-storage units is oversaturated.

Following regular public comment, Englewood City Council listened to presentations regarding the Kmart building that has been closed since 2017. Developers dream of it becoming The Hive on Broadway — a retail and restaurant space, accompanied with the self-storage brand StorQuest. For that dream to become a reality, a zoning change would need to be approved by the council.

The site is currently zoned for uses like restaurants and retailers, but not

self-storage units. If council approves the zoning change, developers will be able to improve the site’s building, parking lot, add new landscaping and lighting, and design aesthetics, according to city documents.

“We believe we’re presenting an exciting and viable solution to readapted reuse for this building today. We are requesting that storage be allowed in the old Kmart building to act as an engine for the rest of the property and turn it into something that we can all be proud of,” said Zeb Ripple, managing partner for the commercial real estate firm Capital Pacific, a company involved with the proposed project.

As the public hearing ensued, Jon Suddarth, vice president of real estate for the William Warren Group, which owns the self-storage brand StorQuest, noted that his company declined in the past to occupy the site where the Englewood CubeSmart Self Storage is. He said the William Warren Group made that decision due to market reasons.

“We do our homework, we passed on that site, and we’re very confident we can lease this (former Kmart) property up in a quick and expeditious matter,” said Suddarth.

Englewood resident Kathleen Bailey was planning on speaking against StorQuest occupying part of the Kmart site, but once she sat through the presentation, she changed her mind. Bailey particularly pointed to how StorQuest wants to cater to businesses if council decides to move forward with zoning changes.

“I love the simple presentation that’s adding a lot of character to what is there now. I think we’re kind of fortunate on some the problems you could have at an old site like that with what this is proposing,” said Bailey.

The zoning change is scheduled for first reading, or consideration of approval, on Sept. 3, according to Englewood Communications Manager Christopher Harguth. If passed, it will be scheduled for second reading, or final approval, on Sept. 16.

Bicycle sale to raise money for Santa shop STAFF REPORT

The nonprofit Denver Santa Claus Shop is selling more than 100 brand new, three-speed cruiser bikes to help raise money to provide children with toys during the holidays.

All the bikes came from a donor who is liquidating its cruiser bike inventory, and proceeds from the sale

will buy new toys for more than 10,000 local children in need, according to a news release.

The sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 in the parking lot south of Cube Smart Self Storage at 1090 W. Hampden Ave., Englewood.

Bikes are available for a minimum $100 donation to the Santa shop. Cash,

credit or debit cards will be accepted at the sale. Each bike wholesales for about $350 and features 26-inch wheels, high-end Shimano gears, front and rear drum brakes and lights, solid tires and anti-rust paint.

Because they were made for bikesharing, these are sturdy, high-quality bikes.

State test results are in for Englewood Schools District sees mixed outcomes, with improvement at elementary level

Standardized test score results from the Colorado Department of Education are in, and now Englewood Schools has data to better understand student success. While some schools are celebrating success from results, others like Englewood middle schools have room to grow.

Results from the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) standardized tests, which test students in grades three through eight in English and math subjects, were released by the state on Aug. 15. Schools like Charles Hay World School and Clayton Elementary School were among Englewood Schools that the district highlighted as having a successful year.

Test scores are based on how many students meet or exceed expectations based on state standards.

At Charles Hay World School, K-6, the school saw 58% of its students meet or exceed expectations in third

grade English and math. The school’s sixth grade students outperformed the state in median growth percentiles by 25% in math, according to Englewood Schools. Statewide, 34.7% of students in grades three through eight met or exceeded expectations in math.

“I really think of our school as a continuous journey of improvement over the past two years, and I see that journey continuing into a third year this year. With that being said, I think that there are a lot of ways to measure school improvement, and we, frankly, look at our improvement on our students’ CMAS results as one small, but important indicator of a school that is heading in the right direction,” said Ryan Cowell, principal at Charles Hay World School.

Cowell, who is in the midst of his third year as principal at the school, said Charles Hay’s overall percentage of kids meeting or exceeding expectations on CMAS testing has grown around 18% for both English and math.

At Clayton Elementary School, fourth-grade students outperformed the state in median growth percentiles by 24% in math and 20% in English, according to Englewood Schools.

“We’re pleased, but we also recognize there is lots of work left for us to make sure we’re providing a high-quality education for kids. (The fourth-graders) were all aware of

where they were in their learning and what they need to move forward,” said Jenny Buster, principal at Clayton Elementary School. “When we get kids to really be involved in their learning in that way, we can see huge increases in student achievement.”

Room for improvement “My initial impression (of the test scores) is that we continue to see great gains in many areas, especially at our elementary level. Though, with this much information, it also becomes clear where we have more work to do,” said Joanna Polzin, chief academic officer for Englewood Schools.

Polzin says Englewood Schools needs to focus its attention more on its secondary schools, particularly in English and math.

CMAS test results show that the number of Englewood seventh-graders who meet or exceed expectations in English dropped by 9.2% from last year’s results, while eighth-grade English results dropped by 6.3%. In math, the district’s seventh-graders meeting or exceeding expectations dropped by 3.1 % and eighth graders dropped by 4.5%.

Buster says all Englewood Schools are using data-driven instruction to accelerate and fill in gaps in school subjects.

Data-driven instruction is an approach that uses assessment, analysis

and action as a key framework for schoolwide support to better student success, according to the New York State Education Department. Buster says schools are using it all throughout the country.

“A big part of the data-driven instruction is: What are we going to do as a result of our data to close the gap? That’s where the teacher makes the difference to say: The kids didn’t get it, but how else can I come back and present this concept in a different way?” said Buster. “It’s this idea that we don’t move on. We move forward with our curriculum, but we make time in our day to reteach standards and concepts that students haven’t mastered, according to data.”

Polzin says Englewood Schools has been extremely focused on academic achievement in the past year, working on its Academic Advancement Initiative. The initiative involves additional mentorship for principals, instructional support for teachers and aligned curriculum districtwide, Polzin said.

“My goal is to continue refining our systems to ensure the best possible learning environment for all students this year and for years to come. We will continue to do what has been working well and will adjust what has not been working in order to stay on a path to continued academic success,” said Polzin.

“I think more and more people want to bike, and we want to encourage alternate forms of transportation.

Streets like U.S. 285 are so congested,” said Maria D’Andrea, the director of public works for Englewood. “If we can get people using alternate forms of transportation, it helps not only the congestion, but it’s a healthy alternative toward driving.”

Part of Englewood Forward, a comprehensive plan adopted in 2017

by City Council that establishes a vision for Englewood’s future, includes a section about working to improve pedestrian and bicycle experience throughout the city.

The upcoming roadway striping for bicycle lanes in each direction along Dartmouth Avenue is three and a half

miles from end to end, and it marked the city’s first official bicycle lane project. D’Andrea says the city intends to install more lanes along Oxford Avenue from Santa Fe Drive all the way to Clarkson Street. The city hopes to install the Oxford project later this fall or at the beginning of spring.

Englewood Police Sgt. Chad Read said the city had 204 accidents in the last year. He says there was only one traffic fatality in the northeast portion of the city that comes to mind. The Englewood Herald previously reported that 64-year-old Nancy Condit was killed on her bicycle at the intersection of South Downing Street and East Cornell Avenue last summer.

Cherry Hills Village resident Roger Hursh says he thinks about the possibility of getting hit by a vehicle, but having a mirror on his helmet that allows for him to see vehicles behind him comforts him.

“I stay on the quieter streets, so as far as I am concerned, I’m OK. I would like streets like Hampden and Arapahoe to have sidewalks,” said Hursrh, who regularly rides his bike through Englewood.

In today’s world of monthly active shooter drills at schools, social media, and an unrelenting 24-hour news cycle, the pressures teenagers face are, in many ways, unrelatable to most adults.

With all this emotional and hormonal turmoil, teens and their parents or trusted adults might not be able to differentiate between normal teenage moodiness and more serious mental health issues.

That’s why Robbie’s Hope Foundation has developed an adult handbook that provides a roadmap on how to talk to teens about their feelings and their mental health.

“Having open lines of communication with teens on an ongoing basis can be a first step in signaling a potential issue, such as depression, anxiety, or thoughts of suicide,” Kari Eckert, executive director of Robbie’s Hope Foundation, said in a news release.

While many professional resources

exist for how to talk to teens about these critical issues, the new adult handbook was created by teens to help parents and other trusted adults — teachers, coaches, youth group leaders, mentors, etc. — initiate and navigate ongoing conversations with the teens in their lives, Eckert said in the release. It reflects how they, the teens, would want a trusted adult to engage in these conversations with them.

The adult handbook provides tips for when it is important to have a conversation with a teen, how to choose the right place and time and how to navigate the conversation.

VOICES Want to be a mermaid? Fin, have it your way

I

just heard about something called “mermaiding.”

It’s been around for a while, but I do my best to stay out of touch, partly because some of these things come and go almost overnight.

QUIET The first profesDESPERATION sional mermaids appeared around 2004.

Nonprofessional mermaids swim in local pools, lakes, river, and oceans. Some don’t even swim.

They just pose.

I watched a video that described the appeal of mermaiding.

Speaking of tails, you can order them online, and they come in all sizes and colors. Matching tops can be purchased.

They are mostly marketed for girls, young women, and women. Some are

marketed for boys.

There are high-end prosthetic tails that cost thousands.

I grew up with crayons. Later I was given a bicycle. After that, I was handed a baseball glove.

It now looks like I was an uneventful and hapless little tyke. If only I had a tail. Or a goat.

Yoga used to be yoga. Then it was yoga with yoga pants. Then it was yoga with yoga music, yoga food, yoga antlers, and now, there is goat yoga.

The expression “Leave well enough alone” is un-American.

I saw a 1948 film on televsion titled “Miranda” when I was in high school.

It stars Glynis Johns, as a mermaid named Miranda.

Johns was a shapely woman with a distinctive, husky voice. Modern audiences have forgotten about her. But not me.

A married doctor goes on a fishing trip, and catches Miranda, who pulls the doctor into the water, and keeps him in her underwater home until he

agrees to show her around London.

Spoiler: The final scene shows Miranda on a rock, holding a merbaby.

Jennifer frequently attends yoga classes. Without a goat. She tells me stories about some of the other students. It sounds like they are there to be seen.

I have never seen one, but there once were dance marathons. And flag pole sitting contests.

In Paris in 1864, they opened a morgue behind Notre Dame to the public. As many as 40,000 tourists a day took the opportunity to view dead bodies.

Today we have something called “immersion art exhibitions.” Instead of being a passive consumer of something as humdrum as a painting or a sculpture, gallery and museum visitors are immersed in the art, engaged with the art, one with the art.

The thought of it gives me a headache.

I acknowledge that I am a dullard. I don’t need a tail, or a goat, and I don’t

need to immerse like a tea bag.

I’m not sure what I would do if I came home and found Jennifer in the tub wearing a tail.

Maybe I’d say, “Are we going to need to get a water bed?”

I tried to find some good mermaid jokes, but there aren’t any. The punch line of one of them is “algebra.” You can probably figure it out for yourself.

In 1984, Ron Howard directed “Splash.” It stars Tom Hanks who falls in love with a mermaid played by Daryl Hannah. He names her “Madison” after Madison Avenue.

Ironically, Hannah had been swimming with her legs bound together since she was a little girl, after reading Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid.”

more, and having more, we have to make sure that we are always breaking through our comfort zones. And whether it is to become better, faster, smarter, or stronger, the more that we take the time to learn and grow, the greater likelihood we have of continuous improvement in every area of our lives.

If we are looking to be better at something, we can learn more through reading, attending seminars, and receiving coaching or mentoring.

As we look to move faster and become more efficient, there are tips and techniques that we can learn to make sure we are keeping up with others who are accomplishing more in less time. And when it comes to being smarter, education is available to us in many different forms. Online learning, peer-topeer learning, formal education, and classes of every kind make it so easy to increase our knowledge. For those looking to get physically stronger, it’s not just about spending time working out or being in the gym, it’s about learning different exercises, trying new techniques and movements, and being willing to spend time learning how diet impacts strength.

And if we are hoping to become mentally, emotionally, or spiritually stronger, there are books, counselors, close friends, and best practices we can learn to develop so that we continue our improvement in each of these areas of life too.

As consumers, I am confident that we are all thankful for companies that work towards continuous improvement in their products, services, and processes. And if we are part of working for any organization, we are probably extremely grateful when our company places the same amount of energy and emphasis on the continuous improvement of their people.

Companies that invest in their people enjoy the benefits of less employee turnover, higher revenues, better morale, and greater shareholder value.

When companies choose to invest in the continuous learning of their people, through both formal and informal education, they will also experience greater engagement, which in turn, creates greater productivity.

There is a lot of wisdom to be found in Dr. Denis Waitley’s amazingly profound words, “Never become so much of an expert that you stop gaining

Just ask anyone who is forced to listen to us tell them how we “used to do” something when we were their age. It used to be we could have comfort knowing that we were experts in something 10 years or more ago, then it was five years ago, and then maybe two years ago. Now, unless we keep up with our own continuous improvement, six months ago no longer qualifies us as experts.

Aerospace middle school opens at Centennial Airport Charter adds new aspect to flight campus of Wings Over Rockies

The awkward middle school years got an exciting boost for many students last week when Colorado Skies Academy r opened at Centennial Airport.

“It was very exciting the see students actively engaged in project-based learning,” said Robert Olislagers, the airport’s executive director. “This morning, I saw students learning about gravity using — I think — coffee filters for homemade parachutes. Several students commented that it was the best first day of school ever!”

The aerospace-focused middle school opened under the Cherry Creek School District after some bumps in its start.

The district halted the school’s application in November, only to have that decision remanded — or sent back — by the Colorado State Board of Education in January.

The school district said it supports the tuition-free public charter school, but the school had failed to meet a necessary condition. Colorado Skies on Nov. 15 was required to provide documents indicating prospective students’ intent to enroll, but the school submitted only 24 letters of intent at that point. The school’s application said it intended to open with 225 students.

The current enrollment is 130 students “and quickly growing,” said Dave Cieslak, a spokesperson for the school.

Colorado Skies agreed to provide enrollment status updates to the school district and has been keeping officials up-to-date, Cieslak added.

After getting past the regulatory hurdles, Colorado Skies held its first day of classes Aug. 19, kicking off an educational program that focuses on STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

The school — launched by iLEAD, a California-based charter school entity

— aims to prepare students for aviation and aerospace careers, its website says. The school is open to all residents of Colorado, not just those in Cherry Creek School District.

Suzanne Acheson, Colorado Skies’ director, said CSA is continuing to grow “and the sky truly is the limit!”

“We are overjoyed that hundreds of families from across our community have embraced Colorado Skies Academy and enrolled their learners at our school,” Acheson said in a statement.

“The overwhelming interest — which spread quickly through the community via social media and word of mouth — shows that parents want their children to benefit from our project-based learning curriculum and participate in our unique aerospace programs.”

In the right place The school is located at the 15-acre “Exploration of Flight” site at Centennial Airport, a new location for the nonprofit Wings Over the Rockies, which focuses on education about aviation and space.

Wings Over the Rockies points to a great need for personnel in the air and space industry — pilots, aircraft maintenance workers, engineers, airtraffic control and the like — and the Exploration of Flight campus wants to be part of the solution. Spokesperson Ben Theune has said the nonprofit wants to make the site “an ecosystem for aerospace education.”

Wings’ site also features the Boeing Blue Sky Aviation Gallery, the campus’ first facility, which opened in July 2018.

It’s a 19,000-square-foot hangar that offers visitors a chance to use flight simulators and even experience flying in a real plane.

The Ozmen Black Sky Space Gallery, the next addition, will likely open in 2021 or later, Theune said. It’ll be based around cutting-edge space technology and concepts.

Aviation pipeline Colorado Skies Academy sits at 13015 Wings Way near East County Line Road and South Peoria Street, on the southeast side of Centennial Airport.

The airport is mostly in unincorporated Arapahoe County just south of Centennial and extends south into

Douglas County. The airport’s name predates the city’s.

Cherry Creek School District also offers aviation-focused education at the nearby Cherry Creek Innovation Campus, which opened this month.

That 117,000-square-foot campus offers many areas of study — from construction management to cooking, from airplane maintenance to cybersecurity.

The Innovation Campus will offer both college credit and industry-recognized certifications for students looking to go straight to the workforce.

37th annual food and music fest will take over Civic Center Park for Labor Day weekend

Taste of Colorado returns to Civic Center Park in downtown Denver for another Labor Day weekend, bringing with it 48 different food trucks and vendors and thousands of hungry mouths.

The annual food festival begins Aug. 31 and finishes Sept. 2 The festival is free to enter and open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, and from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m on Sept. 2. This will be the 37th annual A Taste of Colorado festival.

More than 500,000 people turned out throughout the long weekend last year.

It is the largest food festival with free admission in the state. In addition to the 48 food vendors will be almost 200 retail vendors, a Kids Zone with arts, crafts and a children’s entertainment stage.

The event began in 1983 to bring people together through food and music. Now, the festival is bigger than ever. USA Today ranked A Taste of Colorado No. 4 on its 2019 list of Best General Food Festivals.

KC and the Sunshine Band will headline the festival’s first night Aug. 31, along with Kool and The Gang and Grand Funk Railroad. Then Sept. 1 will be a day for country fans with Dwight Yoakam and Remus Tucker headlining.

Monday will have a host of contemporary music from Toad the Wet Sprocket, American Idiot, Scott Stapp Voice of Creed and more. A total of 32 live bands and artists will perform. This year’s festival will have a larger main stage.

Pork shouler steam buns, Hop & Hoe Zach Stoller owns Hop & Hoe, a food truck specializing in food with farmto-table ingredients. Stoller is from New York City and moved to Colorado in 2017. Just 10 months into his new business, the former culinary student said he’s excited to receive feedback on one of his specialties: steam buns garnished with pork shoulder, hoisin sauce, pickled red onions and cilantro.

“Denver as a whole isn’t on the food radar as of yet — not as much as (Los Angeles) or New York City — so I feel this festival could give Colorado a lot of traction in the food industry and show what we do as chefs,” Stoller said.

“There has been a big influx of people who have come to Colorado, me being one of them, so this could be different than last year just because of that.”

Reggae fusion tacos, Marcia and Joe’s Kitchen This Jamaican specialty food truck will be serving its famous reggae fusion tacos at A Taste of Colorado — a Jamaican take on the Mexican staple. A choice of jerk chicken, curry chicken, curry shrimp, jerk pork, carne asada or al pastor is served on a flour or corn tortilla.

The tacos come in three and are served with a side of cabbage to garnish.

Marcia and Joe’s Kitchen is located in Steamboat Springs and serves braised oxtail, curry goat and chicken, and jerk pork and chicken.

A Taste of Colorado features food items found throughout the state -- from Jamaican cuisine to flavors born in Colorado.

One of the five items A Taste of Soweto will be serving up is Kalahari chicken wings — a South African twist on the Buffalo pub classic. The wings are tossed in a coriander-based Kalahari sauce, named after the Kalahari Desert in South Africa.

“It’s a very signature spice in South Africa for the sausage, but we have sort of invented a new food item all together — we use the spice on chicken wings,” MaPoulo said. “The whole idea is to make something recognizable or appealing to a different group of people, like Americans.”

Group says more women may need breast cancer gene test

More women may benefit from gene testing for hereditary breast or ovarian cancer, especially if they’ve already survived cancer once, an influential health group recommended on Aug. 20.

At issue are genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2. When they’re mutated, the body can’t repair damaged DNA as well, greatly increasing the chances of breast, ovarian and certain other cancers. Gene testing allows affected women to consider steps to lower their risk, such as when actress Angelina Jolie underwent a preventive mastectomy several years ago.

Most cancer isn’t caused by BRCA mutations — they account for 5 percent to 10 percent of breast cancers and 15 percent of ovarian cancers — so the gene tests aren’t for everyone. But mutations cluster in families, and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has long recommended that doctors screen women who have relatives with BRCA-related cancers and refer those Public Notice
