Brewability prepares to take over Brew on Broadway site Brewery employs adults with disabilities, September opening is goal

The space that formerly held the Brew on Broadway at 3445 S. Broadway in Englewood is on track to become Brewability, a brewery that will offer a variety of beers and has plans to employ workers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Tiffany Fixter is moving Brewability from a light industrial area in northeast Denver — where the business lost its lease and closed in mid-June — to Englewood. She hopes to open in the Englewood location by early September.

Fixter also owns Pizzability, a pizza restaurant in Cherry Creek North that employs people with disabilities, and she stays busy running that operation.

Fixter has a background as a special education teacher for over five years and ran a day program for one year before opening Brewability in 2016.

The brewery that is relocating to Englewood has followed a similar business model as Pizzability in employing adults with disabilities.

Tanner Schneller, Brewability’s brewer, said he hopes Brewability will have 10 beers on tap when it reopens in Englewood.

Sewer rates slated to climb amid new state regulations Littleton sitting on millions to pay for mandates at jointly owned plant, but Englewood has no savings in sewer fund

The wastewater treatment plant that serves a large swath of the south metro area needs millions of dollars in upgrades to meet tightening state water quality standards, but the two cities responsible for paying are on vastly different financial footings.

Littleton and Englewood jointly own South Platte Water Renewal Partners, formerly known as the Littleton/Englewood Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The sprawling sewage plant beside the South Platte River near Dartmouth Avenue serves 300,000 people over 108 square miles. Littleton and Englewood split up the job of collecting fees from users in 19 “connector districts,” including areas like Sheridan, Greenwood Village and Bow Mar, and stretching into Jefferson and Douglas counties. The connector districts all impose their own fees on top of the base rate to pay for maintenance of their own sewer lines.

DAVID GILBERT The plant needs $58 million in upgrades over the next five years, partly to comply with state laws passed in recent years that will require a reduction in phosphorous and nitrogen flowing from the treatment facility into the river, plant director Pieter Van Ry told the two cities’ councils during a joint meeting on July 25. The funds will also pay for a variety of oth-

er physical upgrades at the plant, such as to electrical systems, buildings, disinfection systems, and revamping a system to thicken solid waste.

Spending on physical upgrades to the plant has been climbing in recent years, budgets show, as the plant addresses deferred maintenance costs and works to meet a variety of stricter state and federal laws governing water

quality.

By the end of this year, Littleton and Englewood will have paid off the $8 million cost of the plant’s biogas project, Van Ry said, which will capture methane gas and sell it to Xcel Energy as part of a federal program. Current projections predict that the biogas project will pay for itself in four to seven years, at which point plant officials expect it will begin turning a profit. The equipment to capture methane, a greenhouse gas which the plant currently burns off, is expected to become functional in September.

While Littleton is sitting on more than $20 million in reserves that it plans to use to help foot the bill for the upcoming physical upgrades including the water-quality mandates, Englewood has no reserves in its sewer fund. Littleton will likely use up its reserves to pay for the upgrades, officials said. Both cities are undertaking rate studies to determine how to charge customers going forward, and while Littleton is anticipating sewer rate increases of 3% to 4% per year for the next five years to make up the difference not covered by its reserves, Englewood isn’t yet sure what it will take to cover its share of the bill.

“Rates are going to have to go up, but by how much I have no idea,” Englewood Mayor Linda Olson said.

Despite calls to start over, U.S. health system covers 90% Trump, some Democrats work to upend current insurance situation

America’s much-maligned health care system is covering 9 out of 10 people, a fact that hasn’t stopped the 2020 presidential candidates from refighting battles about how to provide coverage, from Bernie Sanders’ call for replacing private insurance with a government plan to President Donald Trump’s pledge to erase the Affordable Care Act and start over.

The politicians are depicting a system in meltdown. The numbers point to a different story, not as dire and more nuanced.

Government surveys show that about 90% of the population has coverage, largely preserving gains from President Barack Obama’s years.

Independent experts estimate that more than one-half of the roughly 30 million uninsured people in the country are eligible for health insurance through existing programs.

Lack of coverage was a growing problem in 2010 when Democrats under Obama passed his health law. Now the bigger issue seems to be that many

people with insurance are struggling to pay their deductibles and copays.

“We need to have a debate about coverage and cost, and we have seen less focus on cost than we have on coverage,” said Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet.

He is among the Democratic presidential candidates who favor building on the current system, not replacing it entirely, as does Sanders.

“The cost issue is a huge issue for the country and for families,” Bennet said.

A report this year by the Commonwealth Fund think tank in New York found fewer uninsured Americans than in 2010 but more who are “underinsured,” a term that describes policyholders exposed to high out-ofpocket costs, when compared with their individual incomes. The report estimated 44 million Americans were underinsured in 2018, compared with 29 million in 2010 when the law was passed. That’s about a 50% increase, with the greatest jump among people with employer coverage.

“When you have 90% of the American people covered and they are drowning in their health care bills, what they want to hear from politicians are plans that will address their health care costs, more than plans that will cover the remaining 10 percent,” said Drew Altman, president of the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonpartisan research organization that tracks the health care system. “When

Democrats talk about universal coverage more than health care costs, they are playing to the dreams of activists and progressives ... much less to the actual concerns of the 90% who have coverage today.”

Sanders’ office responds that the Vermont senator’s “Medicare for All” plan would solve both the coverage and cost problems for individual Americans.

Medical care would be provided with no deductibles or copays. No one would be uninsured or underinsured.

“The simple answer is that our health care system becomes more unmanageable for more and more Americans every year,” Sanders spokesman Keane Bhatt said in a statement. “This is not a system that needs a few tweaks. This is a system that needs a complete overhaul.”

But other countries that provide coverage for all and are held up by Sanders as models for the U.S. don’t offer benefits as generous as he’s proposing. If he is elected president, there’s no way of telling how his plan would emerge from Congress, or even whether something like it could pass.

Four other 2020 Democrats are cosponsors of Sanders’ bill: Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Kamala Harris of California, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

On the other side of the political spectrum, Trump is talking about big changes. His administration is

seeking to have federal courts declare the entire Obama-era health care law unconstitutional, jeopardizing coverage for 20 million people, jettisoning protections for patients with preexisting conditions, and upending the rest of the 970-page statute, now nearly 10 years old.

The president says there’s nothing to worry about. Earlier this summer Trump told ABC News that he was working on a plan that would provide “phenomenal health care,” protect people with preexisting conditions, and would be “less expensive than `Obamacare’ by a lot.”

White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement that the Obama law was “sold and passed on a litany of broken promises” and now “Democrats are proposing even more radical government takeovers of our health care system.”

As president-elect, Trump promised a health plan but never offered one upon taking office. Instead he backed bills from congressional Republicans, including one he called “mean” during a private meeting.

Trump says he might come out with his new plan within months, but that passing it would hinge on his getting reelected and Republicans winning back the House in 2020 while keeping control of the Senate.

Englewood looks to make life easier for cyclists City adding signage, striping for bicycle lanes along Dartmouth Avenue STAFF REPORT

Cycling is about to get a little easier for Englewood residents thanks to new upcoming signs and striping for bicycle lanes.

Englewood is hoping to finish installing signs and roadway striping for bicycle lanes in each direction along Dartmouth Avenue, according to the city’s website. The project, contracted through Colorado Barricade, will feature bike lanes that extend between Inca Street and University Avenue.

Here are some goals about the new signs and bicycle lanes from the city’s website: • Increase awareness of cyclists who are riding along Dartmouth Avenue.

• Improve local and regional bicycle connections with ties to Denver bicycle facilities and connections to the Little Dry Creek Trail and the

Mary Carter Greenway.

• Have minimal impacts on intersection operations and congestion.

• Make cycling safer on Dartmouth Avenue.

The city also will get to work on the Oxford Avenue First and Last Mile Bicycle Facility Connection project, thanks to a grant from the Denver Regional Council of Governments.

Citizens on bicycles can look forward to better connectivity to the Oxford Light Rail Station, Swedish Medical Center and Craig Hospital campuses.

From Windermere Street to Broadway, the project features will include a continuous bicycle lane in each direction, an automobile travel lane in each direction and bicycle detection improvements at the Windermere and Broadway traffic signals, according to the city’s website.

Bicycle detection improvements at the Logan Street intersection traffic signal and shared lane bicycle street markings on each block will also be added from Broadway to Clarkson Street as part of the project.

Fraudulent filing demands continue, state warns Potentially misleading notices request fee for third party to file business documents STAFF REPORT

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office is again alerting small business owners about more potentially misleading notices requesting an extra fee for a third party to file business documents.

According to a news release, the Secretary of State’s Office has continued to receive reports about third parties sending additional deceptive and misleading solicitations to Colorado businesses. The Colorado secretary of state maintains an easy-to-use online filing system for businesses. Use of a third party to complete filings with the secretary of state is not required.

The newest versions of these solicitations offer to obtain a “Certificate of Good Standing” or a “Certificate of Existence” from the Secretary of State’s Office for a fee.

Any business can download a Certificate of Good Standing for free from the secretary of state’s website at www.sos. state.co.us. In addition, the office does not offer anything called a Certificate of Existence.

Another misleading solicitation offers to file a “Statement Curing Delinquency” with the office to bring a business back into good standing. In addition to the required state filing fee, the form requires payment of a processing fee.

These misleading solicitations may appear similar to a government form, cite specific Colorado statutes and require a fee. They might contain your business entity’s actual business ID number and date of formation, as reflected in the secretary of state’s business records; contain a customer ID number that does not match a number given to you by a state or federal agency; contain a warning to make sure that the form’s instructions are followed exactly when completing the form; or contain a due date for your response.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office does not send these solicitations, nor does

Take me to the river The plant is tasked with complying with two mandates set by the Colorado Water Quality Control Division, which regulates wastewater treatment plants, Van Ry told the councils.

Regulations 85 and 31 both require reductions in the amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous that flow out of the plant and into the South Platte River, said Blair Corning, the plant’s deputy director of environmental programs.

Regulation 85 requires the plant to cut its nitrogen discharge to 15 milligrams per liter (mg/l) or below by the year 2023, Corning said, while phosphorous discharge must be reduced to 1 mg/l or below by 2023.

Currently, the plant faces nitrogen limits that fluctuate depending on the flow in the river. The mg/l limit was in the low 40s toward the end of July, with the plant’s discharge in the neighborhood of 20 mg/l. The plant currently has no limit on phosphorous discharge, with current discharges at roughly 3 mg/l.

Regulation 31 is even stricter than 85, requiring nitrogen to be cut to 2 mg/l or below, and phosphorous to 0.17

Additionally, business owners can visit www.sos.state.co.us to verify their business status, file a form or obtain a free certification. Regulation 31, however, has a builtin incentive program, which allows the plant to delay implementation by voluntarily stepping down discharge amounts in the meantime. If the plant hits a series of targets over the next several years, it can push back Regulation 31 compliance well into the 2040s.

Meeting the new standards will require a variety of new equipment and processes, Van Ry said, including injectors that will add chemicals to the treatment process to capture nitrogen and phosphorous.

Reducing phosphorous and nitrogen is important to prevent harmful algae blooms downstream, said Nicole Rowan, manager of the Clean Water Program for the Colorado Water Quality Control Division. Blooms can harm aquatic life by using up oxygen and can cause foul tastes and odors in drinking water for downstream cities.

The water-quality mandates have been in the works for years, Rowan said, and South Platte Water Renewal Partners has been an active and engaged participant in the public process to develop the regulations.

“This is something that nearly every wastewater facility in every state is working on right now,” Rowan said.

Second man sentenced in child pornography case

Daniel Alberts, 67, has been given a 32-year prison sentence in connection with child pornography charges.

In April 2018, Englewood police were called to a home infested with rats, mice, maggots and insects in the 3400 block of South Washington Street. After searching the home, investigators found children’s underwear, diapers, sex toys and a sampling of more than a quarter of a million pieces of child pornography, according to a news release from the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Offfice.

Daniel Alberts pleaded guilty to four counts Alberts of sexual exploitation of a child on July 19. Other charges against him were dismissed as part of a plea agreement, according to the news release.

Alberts and his brother Timothy Alberts had previous convictions for sexual assault on a child, dating back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, the release states.

Timothy Alberts, 63, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of a child in December. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison in February.

“The brothers stockpiled well over three decades’ worth of child pornography with no regard for the broader implications of consuming such sick material. As long as there is a market for child pornography, children will continue to be trafficked, exploited and abused,” Deputy District Attorney Michael Mauro said in the news release.

Paying for it Littleton and Englewood split the cost of operating the sewage plant, with funds coming from sewer bills and “tap fees” which are charged on new sewer lines. The funds are drawn from the cities and the numerous connector districts, meaning residents of Littleton, with a population of roughly 47,000, and Englewood, with a population of roughly 35,000, actually represent the minority of rate payers.

Both Littleton and Englewood have their own sewer budgets, which are enterprise funds, meaning they are funded solely by users and are exempt from revenue caps imposed on other funds by the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights.

Littleton and Englewood are each contractually obligated to pay half the cost of capital improvements at the plant.

Littleton managed to save up more than $20 million in reserves largely thanks to its tap fees, said City Manager Mark Relph.

“The financial status of our sewer fund is in great shape,” Relph said.

“We’ve been anticipating this, and we’re ready to meet the challenge.”

Littleton will likely use up most of its sewer reserves to pay for the capital projects, said Littleton finance director Tiffany Hooten, and its connector districts will likely see incremental sewer

bill increases of 3% to 4% per year. The city may have to incur debt once the reserves are used up, she said.

“It really doesn’t concern me,” Hooten said. “We’re in the best position we could be to cash-fund these projects.”

Englewood, however, has no reserves, and has just half a million dollars in available funds in its 2019 sewer budget.

“I don’t think we’ve kept up with the pace of costs,” Olson, the mayor, said.

“We’ve been averse to raising fees on anything, and then we’re stuck. It’s not the way to do it when there are rising costs.”

Littleton’s tap fees are far higher than Englewood’s, starting at $5,000 and ranging up to more than $3 million, according to the city’s website.

Comparable tap fees in Englewood start at $1,200 and range up to $48,000.

Englewood also hasn’t had as much development as Littleton in recent years, Olson said.

What the capital projects mean for rate payers isn’t yet known, Olson said, and for the time being, they’ll have to wait for the outcome of Englewood’s rate study, expected to be complete by summer 2020.

“Rates will be going up,” Olson said.

“We’ve tried to raise rates incrementally in the past. I hope it’s not a spike.”

Guys, please stop wearing clown shoes with cleats

R

ingling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey may have gone out of business, but there are still plenty of clowns to go around.

They perform in the National Football League, and provide adoring fans with all kinds of non-football-related antics.

The season is still QUIET around the corner, DESPERATION but some players are in mid-season shenanigan form.

One of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jalen Ramsey, arrived at camp in an armored car, surrounded by phony bank money bags.

When the rear Craig Marshall doors were opened, Smith he was introduced by comedian Ha Ha Davis, who said, “It’s time to get this money, money.”

Ramsey is stuck with a $13.7 million contract for 2019, and he feels

like he deserves much more.

Out west, Antonio Brown, a member of the Oakland Raiders, arrived to training camp in a hot air balloon.

These are exactly the kind of guys I’d like to have on my team. If I were organizing a vaudeville show in Benson.

In pro football — and elsewhere in sport (including the United States women’s national soccer team) — there is a lot of theater that goes on before, during, and after a game that didn’t used to be there.

It probably is appreciated by younger fans (than I am).

Professional golf is still safe, but just about everywhere else there are choreographed celebrations and selfaggrandizement galore.

I say: Score a touchdown and hand the ball to the referee. Don’t signal your buddies to meet you in the end zone, form a circle, and do a tribute to Don Cornelius.

Humble, apparently, went out with Uriah Heep.

Ramsey has been a professional football player for two years. He signed a $23.3 million rookie contract.

He is in the third year of the contract, and I guess he thinks $13.7 million simply isn’t enough of a reward for a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback.

Davis, the comedian who introduced Ramsey, yelled, “The man, the myth, Jalen Ramsey,” and a string of “He’s so good” jokes that were as funny as the Mueller hearing.

Last week, a friend sent me a YouTube of personalities who have died in 2019, and among them were Bart Starr, John Havlicek, Don Newcombe and Bill Buckner, none of whom arrived to camp in a hot air balloon.

Times change. Expectations change.

I never saw my favorite baseball player, Ted Williams, on “The Tonight Show.”

Megan Rapinoe, on the other hand, has been on everything except those airfryer oven commercials.

We are an entertainment-driven world. Everyone might be the next

reality television star, or the next nobody to be given a new car on “Ellen” for saving a parakeet’s life.

I do not underestimate the value of an ego. Without one, there would be no artists, musicians, actors, or opinion columnists.

But enough about me. Let’s talk about me.

As Newton said, there is always an equal and opposite, and that’s true in professional sports as well.

Some pro football players arrived to camp in modest vehicles, spoke modestly, and dressed modestly, and actually had something to say worth listening to.

But it’s the squeaky clowns that get the grease.

And those are the ones who get the press. Not the guy who shows up in a Dodge Dart and goes about his business.

Turn high-speed thinking into highly motivated action

T

here is certainly no shortage of ideas these days. As a matter of fact, we typically come up with more ideas than we really need. And the more ideas we generate, the more excited we get about putting them into practice.

What I am seeing more and more of is some very high-speed thinking.

The problem is that I am also seeing some low functionWINNING ing and less motivated doing.

WORDS Brainstorming is one of my very favorite exercises to participate in. Sometimes I find myself working through ideas on my own and challenging myself to come up with as many possible new ideas or solutions as Michael Norton possible. However, what I enjoy more is being part of a group and having others share their ideas and what they are thinking.

In most cases their contributions and line of thinking was something totally different than my own. And

usually much smarter.

The problem is that our thinking never stops, there is always one more idea or new approach we want to think through. One more shiny object to chase. This in turn creates the bigger problem, the “doing” actually does stop. As I explored this further, I found out some very interesting information. As much as some people love innovative thinking and creativity, coming up with vision and strategy, they don’t like to do the work that it takes to execute or implement the idea. Unless of course, it was their own idea.

The other thing people shared with me was that in many cases of a team meeting or brainstorming session, the meeting ended with no clearly defined next steps or assigned ownership. They may have had a powerful thought-provoking session, but when it was over, the excitement that was generated in the room evaporated with everyone’s exit. Or it was assumed that someone would simply take ownership.

So how do we turn high speed thinking into highly motivated action? The answer isn’t found in the

“Just do it” slogan. The answer is found in just two “doing” words, prioritization and accountability. As much as I enjoy spending time on an airplane filling up a page or two of ideas and strategy, I always go back and prioritize everything on the pages. The next step is to put dates, names of team members or people who can help, desired outcomes, and most importantly I write down an immediate next step.

Having a very clearly defined next step forces prioritization and accountability. Too often we look for the endgame or result. We hit the fast-forward button and forget that in order to achieve our desired results, we must first know and take that very first step, that immediate next step. And yes, having a plan beyond our immediate next step is super important, however, if we are talking about turning ourselves or our teams from high-speed thinkers driven by highly motivated action, we must start with the first action step.

Keep the ideas coming, creativity drives our innovation and growth.

capturing them in some way. Keep revisiting those ideas from time to time as they may be brilliant, just not timely. They may become even more brilliant over time and with each new review or brainstorming session. To become a highly motivated person of action means we never allow our flow of new ideas become an excuse for not getting the job done. Accountability means we own it, or someone owns it.

Go-kart racing offers a rush around Denver metro area

ust off an inconspicuous industrial side street, kids as young as 5 and adults as old as 80 don helmets, strap on seatbelts and zip around like something out of a video game.

They’re racing go-karts at K1 Speed in Highlands Ranch, one of a handful of places in the Denver metro area where impassioned drivers, beginners and fun-seeking groups can test their skills on winding tracks.

“Karting is definitely a little different than your regular pool day,” said Nichole Sarno, K1’s assistant manager.

Christian Obrecht, a 47-year-old from Denver, built up a love for karting near Bandimere Speedway, a professional drag-racing track just west of Lakewood. And although Obrecht wasn’t racing full-sized cars, renting karts proved to be a lasting passion for him — eventually, he bought his own wheels.

“I started up just from actually watching a commercial one time, and I was like, ‘Oh, man, I kind of want to get into this,” Obrecht said.

Once he came back to a track with his own kart, he found a “super open and friendly” community.

“I didn’t even know how to get the thing off my truck. I was standing there — it was like my first day of school,” Obrecht said. “This guy was just walking by like, ‘Do you need help?’ Those are the guys I hang out with now to this day with kart racing.”

Obrecht now hopes to get his young son into racing, too, which won’t be difficult with the metro area’s options.

Action Karting, an outdoor track at the Bandimere Speedway near Highway C-470, touts itself as kid-friendly and an ideal place for first dates. K1 in Highlands Ranch sees events such as young girls’ birthday celebrations and bachelorette parties, Sarno said.

Male drivers are a bit more common than females at K1, Sarno said, but they’re not far off in numbers.

“Our fastest is a 17-year-old guy; the next fastest is a 13-year-old girl,” said Sarno, referring to K1’s speed records.

Christian Obrecht, a 47-year-old from Denver, turns his wheel in a kart race. Obrecht owns his own kart. In metro Denver and farther out, some tracks allow drivers to use their own karts.

COURTESY PHOTO Adult karts can reach about 45 mph, and manual — or “shifter” — karts can reach about 55 mph, while junior karts for kids run about 25 to 30 mph, Sarno said. And on tracks that allow personal, non-rental karts, Obrecht’s vehicle can reach about 100 mph.

Despite the high-energy atmosphere of karting, what Obrecht enjoys most is the mental clarity the repetition of the turns can bring.

“It’s all you’re thinking about when you’re doing it,” Obrecht said. “You’ll have a favorite turn, a not-so-favorite turn … My wife makes fun of me because she says, ‘You’re just going in a circle,’ but that alone clears your mind.”

Sarno’s favorite part is “the thrill of it” — as an employee at K1, she often drives the karts — but watching others speed around is satisfying, too.

On an evening in late July, Anil Kumar Somala, 44, came to K1 with his children, Pratheek Somala, 10, and 12-year-old Bhavagnya Somala. The father from Highlands Ranch wanted to give his kids driving experience to be more comfortable on streets one day.

His daughter, Bhavagnya, came to K1 before with apprehension, but she stepped up with more confidence this time.

“In the first round, it was pretty scary, to be honest, because I’ve never driven anything, but I felt safe on second lap — but it was fun,” said Bhavagnya Somala, adding she plans to keep karting in the future.

Into the wild chew yonder Edible and medicinal plants can be found growing around metro area

Most people would look at a backyard filled with weeds and see a problem.

Kate Armstrong sees a feast.

Armstrong is an urban forager — someone versed in wild edible and medicinal plants of the urban environment. She leads nature walks and seminars that teach people a new way to look at the plants in their midst.

“People are astonished when they find out how much food is all around us,” Armstrong said. “Nature isn’t here to hurt us, it’s here to give us everything we need.”

Indeed, in the course of a short stroll through a Lakewood back yard, Armstrong pointed out dozens of plants growing in sidewalk cracks or along fences with uses ranging from salad greens to treating a toothache.

There are very few toxic plants in our region, Armstrong said. Most plants are technically edible, it’s just that most don’t taste very good.

For novice foragers, though, Armstrong recommends a few highly common — and highly tasty — plants that

There’s purslane, a low-growing weed with thick leaves and meaty stems, which can be eaten raw in a salad, fried in stir-fry, used as a soup thickener, or pickled.

Also abundant is mallow, a roundleafed weed that also makes a good snack when eaten raw, but also provides chewy seedpods that Armstrong calls “cheeses.” The stems can be roasted and eaten like pretzel sticks, she said, and

the bigger leaves can be used as miniserving trays for hors d’oeuvres.

Lamb’s quarter grows in moist, disturbed soil, and produces leaves with a mild, lettuce-like taste. A single lamb’s quarter plant can provide months of salad greens by snipping off tender young leaves, Armstrong said.

Dandelion greens are best eaten raw, Armstrong said, and are excellent for detoxing the body.

Even bindweed, the bane of so many gardeners and lawn lovers, produces tiny white flowers with a delicate, floral taste that make an elegant garnish in a salad, Armstrong said.

Only a couple plants common in our region are poisonous, Armstrong said.

One is hemlock, which grows in moist soil and produces spindly, wispy leaves that are hard to tell apart from carrot tops. The other is death camas, which looks similar to wild onion or wild garlic, but doesn’t have their characteristic savory odor.

A more common problem, Armstrong said, is herbicides and pesticides. Urban foragers should try to ensure that the place they’re gathering from hasn’t been sprayed to keep weeds and bugs down, she said. That’s easy in your own back yard, but when foraging along roadsides or other wilder places, a key is to watch out for areas with monocultures — where only one type of plant is abundant. That’s often a sign that sprays are in use.

The safest bet, Armstrong said, is to let your own yard go wild, which will also help it become a haven for pollinators and other wildlife.

“This can be a really fun hobby, and a great way to reconnect with nature,” Armstrong said. “And, who knows? If push comes to shove, it’s knowledge that could come in handy.”

Hit the trails Beyond the back yard, Colorado provides all sorts of edible goodies, said Blake Burger, a horticulturist with the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Burger said, and make a tasty tea, or an addition to herb butters or marinades for fish and chicken.

Currant berries are plentiful in the region, Burger said, and make delicious syrups and jams.

Rose hips, the pink or red seedpods left behind after the flower dies, are also high in vitamin C and make a distinctive sour, floral tea.

It’s important to harvest wild edibles ethically and consciously, Burger said.

As a rule of thumb, try not to gather more than 10% from a single plant, or from a patch of plants.

Interest in wild edible plants is growing, Burger said. He leads the Denver Botanic Gardens’ new herbalism certificate program, which covers how to use a variety of wild and cultivated plants for health and medicine.

Burger, like Armstrong, is tied into the flourishing community of urban foragers in the Denver area. There’s a lot of activity in the subculture these days, Burger said, with classes around

the metro area filling up quickly.

“I think people are starting to experience a shift in their vision, and are realizing natural is the way to go,” Burger said. “We’re starting to move past our diets of overly processed foods.

It’s empowering to feed yourself or heal yourself from things in your landscape.

These are things our ancestors knew, and they still work today.”

Latona said, “the behavior would be judged on observed damage to park property. Don’t go digging up roots, disturbing soil or removing entire species.”

Wild edibles are everywhere in South Suburban properties, said Victoria Sutton, an interpreter at South Platte Park, including wild asparagus, chokecherries and wild plums.

But, she said, consider your impact on your fellow animals when you forage, Sutton said.

“It’s fun to take a nibble here and there, but those plants can be a matter of life and death for wildlife in our area,” Sutton said. “Don’t go hauling basketfuls of material out of parks.”

Even for those not hitting the trails, there should be lots to munch on this year in back yards alone, Burger said.

“It was a wet spring, and plants are delayed in their growth, but strong” Burger said. “If you’re going to get into urban foraging, this is a good year for it.”

Do it right While Burger and Armstrong said the best place to forage is on land you or someone you know owns, so you can be sure of herbicide use, it’s possible to forage in other environs.

There’s no specific rule against gathering wild edibles in most of the parks in the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District, said Skot Latona, who manages South Platte Park in Littleton.

It’s against the rules to gather in South Platte Park itself, though.

“My goal for downtown Englewood is to make it the most accessible two to three blocks in the state,” said Fixter, whose father is a graduate of Englewood High School. She says she has talked to nearby eateries such as Whiskey Biscuit, One Barrel and Chop Shop about offering Braille menus to those with vision-related disabilities.

Tanner Schneller, Brewability’s brewer, said the brewery isn’t sure of how many people it will employ. He hopes to have at least 10 beers on tap and obtain a brewpub license — additional licensing is required before

opening at its new location. Schneller envisions Brewability customers having the option of ordering wine or cider at the brewery.

“It’s important to incorporate something that everybody enjoys via pizza or beer and provide an opportunity for adults who otherwise wouldn’t have an opportunity to work. The whole goal of our business is to employ as many people as we can or that we can afford,” said Schneller. “That’s the point of what we’re doing.”

The Brew on Broadway, which opened in 2013 and helped set the stage for the up-and-coming 3400 block of South Broadway, closed July 31.

“As (Brew on Broadway) was a local hangout for many Englewood residents, I’m sure this community will welcome Brewability with open arms,” said David Carroll, executive director for the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce, which works to help Englewood businesses succeed.

re you starting to enter the waters of finding a new job? Whether it’s because you are unhappy at your current position, or you realize you’ve grown and are ready to move up – the main thing to keep in mind is your resume needs to be updated.

A fresh resume, or even multiple drafts of a resume are good to have on hand.

Don’t be afraid to dust off the old version. A lot of the basic information still applies. It just needs to be updated to fit today’s job market, and maybe even split into a few versions if you are applying for multiple jobs.

Call for Nominations for Jefferson County Public Schools Jefferson County, Colorado The Board of Education of Jeffco Public Schools in the County of Jefferson, State of Colorado, calls for nominations of candidates for school directors to be placed on the ballot for the regular biennial school election to be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.

At this election, two directors will be elected representing director districts 3 and 4 for a term of office of four years. To be qualified, a candidate must have been a registered elector of the school district for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the election and a resident of the director district which will be represented. A person is ineligible to run for school director if he or she has been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child.

A person who desires to be a candidate for school director shall file a written notice of intention to be a candidate and a nomination petition signed by at least 50 eligible electors who are registered electors for the regular biennial school election.

Nomination petitions may be obtained at the Board of Education office, Education Center, 1829 Denver West Dr., Bldg. 27, 4th floor. Office hours are 7:30 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday. Completed petitions shall be submitted to Helen Neal, designated election official, at the Board of Education office no later than 4:30 pm on August 30, 2019.

The Englewood School District in the County of Arapahoe, State of Colorado, calls for nomination of candidates for school board directors to be placed on the ballot for the regular biennial school election to be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.

City and County

At this election two directors will be elected for a term of office of four years. To be qualified, a candidate must have been a registered elector of the school district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election. A person is ineligible to run for school director if he or she has been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child.

A person who desires to be a candidate for school director shall file a written notice of intention to be a candidate and a nomination petition signed by at least 50 eligible electors who are registered to vote in the regular biennial school election.

Nomination petitions may be obtained at the Roscoe Davidson Administration Building, 4101 S. Bannock Street. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Completed petitions shall be submitted to Designated Election Official (DEO), Michelle Haider, no later than 4:00 p.m. on August 30, 2019.

That’s a bit of political deja vu.

Republicans controlled Washington back in 2017 when Trump, then-Speaker Paul Ryan, RWisconsin, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, tried for months to repeal and replace the Obama law, only to fail.
