Shooting of suspect deemed justified

BUILDING GOES, MEMORIES REMAIN

BY ELLIS ARNOLD EARNOLD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Englewood officers’ shooting of a woman suspected of driving a stolen car at Swedish Medical Center in January has been ruled justified in a report by the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. The suspect survived her injuries. In the Jan. 16 incident, police tried to detain occupants of a car suspected of being stolen on the sixth floor of a parking garage at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood. “Both officers who fired had reasonable grounds to believe, and did believe, that he or another person was imminent danger of being killed or of receiving great bodily injury ...,” Clinton McKinzie, chief deputy district attorney, wrote in the report, dated July 22. “Therefore, I find, based on the law and the facts, that Officers Ayres and Kaspar were justified in using, or attempting to use, deadly force.”

The final wing of Clayton Elementary at Delaware Street and Tufts Avenue undergoes demolition on July 15. The school, which was established in 1948, has already been replaced by a new facility just south of the old building. The school is one of several elementary schools being replaced under a bond approved by voters in 2016. DAVID GILBERT
