Even on a Monday, residents from all over the Denver metro area caught some man-made waves on the South Platte River at River Run Trailhead. More than a dozen people brought kayaks, boards and some dogs to enjoy the water the afternoon July 17. Some skilled water-sporters rode the wave — others jumped in and floated downstream. The recreational area near South Santa Fe Drive and West Oxford Avenue opened nearly a year ago, Aug. 25. It features SEE TRAILHEAD, P19

Caleb Herron, a Denver resident, poses with his dog at the River Run Trailhead along the South Platte River July 17, where a man-made system creates waves. Unlike others there, he doesn’t surf or kayak — “I just jump in and ride it down,” Herron said.
