Englewood Police have announced that four male suspects have been arrested in connection with a July 14 shooting that left a 13-year-old boy dead and an 18-year-old man in critical condition.

Police said Jesus PerezMedrano, 19, was arrested on July 16 in Centennial. Two 17-year-olds were arrested Perezon July 17, one in Littleton Medrano and the other in Englewood.

TLC Meals on Wheels moves into former restaurant Nonprofit that feeds elderly, homebound finds new home at abruptly-closed Mexican eatery

First, the good news: TLC Meals on Wheels has a new home.

TLC, a nonprofit that provides healthy meals, companionship and other services to seniors and homebound adults, finally landed a new headquarters, months after finding out they’d have to vacate the old Ames Elementary School in Centennial ahead of the building’s demolition.

The not-so-good news: Their new home is the former Las Delicias, Littleton’s beloved Mexican restaurant, which closed abruptly in early July.

Owner Roberto Torres did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the closure of the longtime favorite eatery at Broadway and Arapahoe Road, renowned for its chile rellenos and blue margaritas.

Though a sign in the window says “We’ve Moved,” the local chain with four other metro-area locations hasn’t opened any new branches.

Back to the good news: The restaurant space should make for a top-notch headquarters for years to come, said TLC Meals on Wheels executive director Diane McClymonds.

“There’s so much potential for us now that we’ll have our own space,”

said McClymonds. “It’s a nice big kitchen, and we’ll be able to add new programs down the line.”

TLC has been using the old cafeteria at Ames Elementary near Colorado Boulevard and Dry Creek Road, which closed to students 10 years ago and is slated to be demolished to make way for a new elementary school as part of a massive Littleton Public Schools bond project.

Though district officials originally believed they could find space elsewhere in the district for TLC, plans didn’t shake out, and TLC found out in late 2018 that they would have to be out by Christmas 2019.

The search for a new home was tricky, McClymonds said, because numerous criteria had to be met: the new location needed to be in the heart of TLC’s service area, which is predominantly Arapahoe County. The organization didn’t want to build an expensive and complicated kitchen from scratch in a warehouse, and many closed restaurants were too small for TLC’s volume.

A donor who asked to remain anonymous bought the Las Delicias building for TLC, McClymonds said. The donor paid just over $1 million for the building, according to county records.

high visibility at a busy intersection will bring TLC to the front of people’s minds, McClymonds said.

“I’m more excited to put our sign out front than anything,” McClymonds said.

TLC will start out by leasing the building from the anonymous buyer, McClymonds said, with plans to buy it outright for cash.

“As a nonprofit, we don’t want to have debt,” McClymonds said.

All told, TLC is hoping to raise $2 million to pay for the property and an extensive renovation project to retrofit the building for a fast-paced, high-volume operation of meal preparation.

“People rely on us for nutritious food and a friendly face at the door,” McClymonds said.

A quiet fundraising campaign has already netted about 40% of their goal, McClymonds said, with the rest up to the general public.

“We want the fundraising behind us so we can focus on feeding people,” McClymonds said. “I think it’s our responsibility to give back and help those who helped build this community.”

Short-term rentals could gain legality under proposal Staff urges zoning rules, permit standards for limited-stay options

Toward the end of September last year, Englewood’s community development staff and members of its planning and zoning commission hosted an open house to survey the public about short-term rental services. The service typically sees homeowners rent out their residences for 30 days or less.

City officials included an online survey to reach out to more of an audience, but results were low with a total of 21 residents participating. Despite a low turnout, the survey found that 15 respondents believe there has been an increase in short-term rentals in Englewood over the past three years.

Short-term rental platforms like Airbnb offer more than 4.5 million listings around the world, according to Vox, a research-based policy analysis site.

Short-term rentals are not legal in Englewood — despite the fact that city staff estimates there are 130 shortterm rentals in the city, including en-

tire homes — but the situation could get more clairity and possible legality soon after city staff presented recommendations to council to add regulations to the field. The recommendations were presented before council at a July 15 study session in which staff recommended setting zoning restrictions for short-term rental services and permit requirements.

If recommendations are passed by city council, then short-term rentals would be clearly allowed in residential, multi-use and medical zoned districts. “(Short-term rentals are) a new land use category. It’s something we hadn’t seen before and definitely have not seen with this much popularity in specific regards to a zoning ordinance,” said Wade Burkholder, planning manager for Englewood. Burkholder acknowledged that other municipalities are struggling to regulate shortterm rental services.

A short-term rental permit system would require the providers of rentals to apply for an application on an annual basis and pay a fee. Providers would also need to provide proof of property ownership, a certificate of insurance and a plan showing all parking areas near a short-term rental property.

RTD’s 50-year history builds path to future CEO says transit district considering new ways to get people where they need to go

were several different transit agencies operating in the Denver-Boulder area. On Sept. 7, 1973, voters in what was then the seven-county district authorized RTD to issue $425 million in revenue bonds backed by a half-percent sales tax. With that money, RTD began buying up the aging municipal bus systems that served Denver and its suburbs, such as Denver Metro Transit, Evergreen Transit, Northglenn Suburban and the Longmont Mini. In 1994, RTD opened its first light rail line; in 2016 it opened its first bus rapid transit line and commuter rail line.

This year, we launched the 61AV, an autonomous vehicle pilot program and FlexRide, an on-demand shared bus service where passengers have the ability to book a trip online.

RTD has transformed transportation for the Denver metro region.

lot can happen in 50 years, and that is definitely the case in the world of transit. In the Denver area, the Regional Transpiration District — which launched in 1969 — has seen its share of new technologies, groundbreaking ideas, unrealized dreams and work still to be done.

But a half-century of offering mass transit options to the metro area is no small feat — one RTD is celebrating Genova all through this year.

We connected with Dave Genova, general manager and CEO of RTD, to discuss RTD’s past, its current achievements and its future challenges.

This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Tell me about the 50th year of RTD — how is RTD marking the occasion?

KAILYN LAMB We started in February by rolling out a life-size 50th-anniversary logo event at Denver Union Station. We also have updated all RTD templates to reflect the 50-year logo. Additionally, RTD celebrated on its actual anniversary on July 1 by holding rider appreciation events in each of the transit agency’s 15 districts to thank the public for riding with us over the past five decades. RTD officially celebrated its 50th anniver-

sary on Friday, July 12, with a party on Wynkoop Plaza in front of Union Station. The event featured RTD information, food trucks, music, a program with speakers and other family-friendly activities. And there will be more to come as the year continues.

How has transit changed in Denver since RTD first started?

When RTD first started, there

One-ring scam calls back in circulation STAFF REPORT

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has seen a sudden spike in the number of complaints from residents receiving one-ring phone calls over their landline and cell phones, according to a news release.

The way the scam works, according to the release, is that the phone rings once, then abruptly cuts off before the person has a chance to answer, leaving only a missed call notification. The call is then followed by repeated calls that happen either in a short sequence or over the course of a day. The calls always display the same call-back number.

Victims who call back — either because they are curious about the number or because they think someone is trying to get through but keeps getting cut off — are put on hold by an operator before realizing that no one is coming on the line. The call is, in fact, an international call to a scammer, who collects long-distance fees billed to the victim. Fees include a connection charge of $35-$40 and fee-perminute charges.

The scam is not usually discov-

ered until the victim gets a phone bill. Fortunately, the fees can be deducted if it is reported to the phone carrier when the bill comes in, the release said.

Other signs of a potential scam are that the caller ID number is prefaced by a three-digit number resembling an area code that could be construed as any U.S. code. However, such calls often originate in other countries that also use threedigit area codes.

Other numbers also might be spoofed to appear local.

To remove charges, look for long-distance calls listed on the bill as premium service, international calls or a toll call. Report to the phone carrier the date of the scam, the details of the scam and the phone number that appears on the caller ID, and ask to have the charges deducted. If you do not anticipate needing international phone call service, request that your phone company remove the feature from your plan.

he metro area hit triple-digit temperatures for the first time this year on July 19, sending many scrambling to hit the river.

Dozens of river floaters headed down the South Platte River just downstream from the C-470 bridge, riding blessedly high flows coming out of Chatfield Reservoir.

The tubing route carries floaters through South Platte Park, an oasis of shady cottonwoods and gentle water.

The cool water was a godsend to Shane Stanton, of Centennial, who skipped out on work a couple hours early to get wet.

“As long as I’m in the water, the heat’s not so bad,” Stanton said from his innertube. “I guess I’d better just stay in here until the sun goes down.”

Mayor Pro Tem Rita Russell applauded Denver’s short-term rental policy, which allows for the city to revoke, sanction, or deny a shortterm rental license application if a rental property negatively affects

the public health, safety or welfare of a neighborhood, according to Colorado Public Radio.

“The problem is we’re not Denver.

We don’t have the resources,” said Russell. She discussed how Denver has dedicated staff that works to make sure its policy is being enforced. Russell also mentioned how Denver said their policy wouldn’t be as effective if they didn’t have staff.

Englewood Communications Manager Chris Harguth confirmed city council will have another study session on the topic on Aug. 26.

What would you say the focus of RTD should be for the next 50 years?

RTD is embarking on the process of reimagining RTD through our Transportation Transformation work which will kick off in July.

RTD strives to continue to keep its finger on the pulse of the citizens in the Denver metro area, offering new services to better meet the needs of our tech-savvy and rapidly growing population. We will be developing the mobility plan for the future of the Denver metro region.

The Denver metro area has obviously seen some massive growth in recent years. Has ridership grown at a similar rate?

We have been experiencing increased ridership on commuter rail, bus rapid transit, and so far this year on our fixed route bus network. Nationally, ridership has declined across the country mainly on bus services.

There are a variety of reasons: more people are working from home and they are using transit less and using their cars more and automobile access is better than ever before. RTD will be spending the next two years looking at all of the services we pro-

RTD hopes to continue collaborating with stakeholders, communities, businesses and regional leaders to innovate and integrate our services and continue to adapt to what our riders and non-riders desire.

What are some big changes happening to popular routes as population changes and grows?

We assess all our services three times a year to ensure that we are providing the most efficient service that meets the needs of the community.

One of our most popular bus routes, the 15/15L, which has about 24,000 boardings a day, is getting a

makeover right now. Updates include enhanced shelters with lighting and security cameras, queue bypass lanes, transit signal priority and bus bulbs that will improve traffic flow on East Colfax. Also, we recently completed a bus rapid transit study to see what transit corridors might be viable options for that service in the future.

This year we are also embarking on a comprehensive analysis of our system, which will allow us to take a big-picture look at all our service and how we can make improvements to the system to accommodate the

I’m excited about all the new technology that is making it easier for people to use our services. We have our partnership with Uber that allows passengers to purchase tickets in the Uber app; we also have a partnership with Lyft where folks can see our services in their app; we have our transit watch app that allows people to report any suspicious or unsafe activities seamlessly and easily. We are also excited about our 61AV route at 61st and Pena Station along the University of Colorado A Line, exploring autonomous vehicles; as well as our FlexRide microtransit service — an on-demand service where people can connect their first and last mile from select transit stations.

After 22 years, my air conditioner up and died. I wasn’t thinking. I should have had it checked out in the spring.

Now look at me.

The chickens are laying hard-boiled eggs.

According to “The Old Farmer’s Almanac,” the Dog Days of summer began on July 3, and they will end on August 20. They are called the Dog Days because they coincide with the sunrise rising of the Dog Star, Sirius.

I’m sorry. It’s hard to be the good humor man when it’s 88 in the shade. In my bedroom. I’m not kidding.

I had to take a number when my air conditioner quit, and my number still hasn’t been called yet.

I have a two-story house. The second

floor is unbearable, the first floor is tolerable, and the unfinished basement is the most comfortable area in the building.

Why didn’t they put the basement on the second floor, and the second floor in the basement?

Harry has been giving me dirty looks. Dachshunds are not designed for temperatures like this, even though there is a common sobriquet about a dachshund’s physique that implies otherwise.

As a writer, I have tried to imagine how authors who lived in the South were able to persevere in the heat and humidity.

Mixing business with friendship can work

L LETTER TO THE EDITOR Stop inhumane treatment Since the beginning of 2019, more than 500,000 children, women and men have crossed the southern border of the United States seeing asylum from violence and trying to escape extreme poverty. Families are walking for weeks or even months with little food, water or shelter only to find themselves in unsafe U.S. detention centers.

The situation on our southern border is not a partisan issue; it is a humanitarian crisis.

Seeking asylum is not a crime.

with dignity and respect and to have their human rights upheld.

Nonetheless, U.S. officials are systematically failing to protect asylum seekers and failing to care for children entering the U.S. News reports reveal horrendous conditions in detention centers, including children separated from their families, children denied basic hygiene services and children charged with caring for infants. As an early learning professional with more than 30 years of experience, I know that such neglect is traumatic and detrimental to children’s mental

health and well-being.

I thank Congressman Crow for regularly visiting the immigrant detention center in Aurora. I urge him to continue to stand up for children and to work with Sens. Bennet and Gardner and the full U.S. Congress and the Trump administration to ensure the well-being of these children.

ike me, you have probably heard this saying repeatedly, “Never mix business with friendship.” You may have even had an experience that didn’t turn out so well when you tried to partner with a friend on a business endeavor or worked with a friend to help you do your taxes, provide you insurance, sell or buy your home, fix your plumbing, help you make an investment, or any number of other situaWINNING tions that went horribly sideways.

WORDS Let me ask this question, was it the friendship or was it the situation itself ?

Was it the friendship or was it something else that went wrong? Did a third party have something to do with? Think about it for a moment. And if you still believe it was your friend, perhaps we need to go back and define what friendship means or how we define our particular friendships.

Friends, especially close friends, Michael Norton deal with disagreements and conflicts throughout the friendship. But the friendship is so deep and trusted that if something goes wrong or sideways, they always know how to get beyond the specific incident or circumstance. In most cases anyway.

Over my career I have made tremendous friends.

Clients who have become friends, and partners who have become friends. It has worked the other way as well, friends who have become clients and friends who have become partners. I have been hired by friends and I have hired friends. And, luckily for me it has almost always worked out well.

Popsicles and icicles. Fireflies and drive-ins on Friday night. Poison ivy and heatstrokes.

Like every other kid, I looked forward to summer vacation. Now I look forward to a vacation from summer.

Give me late September. Now. I’m not the kind of person who will complain when it’s 10 degrees outside and snow is over Harry’s head.

Not me.

I have done a complete 180 when it comes to weather.

As I write this, my back is sticking to the chair, and rivulets of moisture are running down my similes.

And my sense of humor melted an hour ago.

Some will say that one might make concessions for friends or treat them differently. Some may argue that it’s hard to talk about money or ask for money from a friend. And still others will stand behind this concept that a client cannot become a friend because you will never be willing to raise your price or ask for more money — the preference being to preserve the friendship rather than tell them that there has been a price increase.

So, here’s the difference, a friend is a friend at all times. A friend is someone who will tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. A friend is someone you can trust with any project that they are capable of doing. A friend is someone who will stand by you when prices go up or down, when business is good or bad, and who is there for the wins and the losses.

It’s when we ask our friends to do something that we know is not in their sweet spot, not their strength, that’s when things go wrong. We set them up for failure. It’s when we don’t set proper expectations regarding performance, that’s another huge area where we often fall short and the

friendship can be placed at risk.

You see, I would rather go into business with a true and trusted friend. I have done so a few times and we are still friends today. I would rather hire a friend who has the experience, qualifications, and track record of success to do the job, who knows I will have their back, and who will always have mine.

Am I afraid that one day the business relationship will end? Maybe. Am I worried that it will also end the friendship? Never.

The next time you ask your friend to fix your car, sell your house, or go into business together, make sure you both define your friendship first. Then set proper expectations, putting trust and your friendship before any business, and always understand what happens should anything go wrong.

For me, I would always prefer doing business with a trusted friend. If I can’t, then I look for the next most qualified person, business, or company to help me. How about you? WAMEGO – Nancy (Jones) Farley, 88, of Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, July 15, 2019 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

July 15, 2019 She was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 29, 1931. She graduated from Treadwell High School in Memphis, TN and received an Associate’s degree from Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, CO. After raising her family, she worked at the college’s accounting office for more than 12 years.

She is survived by her husband, William “Bill” Farley of more than 67 years.

She also leaves behind four children, William S. “Bill”, Jr., Paul L. (Leslie), Jean Tracy (Jerry), and Ann Vrchota (Jim); eight grandchildren, Charlene Chacon (Oscar), Christina Spanier (Seth), Father Philerat (Williams S. IV), Courtney Montgomery (Shannon), Peter Farley, Reid Tracy (Rachel), Virginia Farley, and Spencer Hayward; four great-grandchildren, Dylan Spanier, Elora Montgomery, Max Chacon, and Ryan Spanier; and a sister, Barbara Kehayes.

Nancy had a natural talent in the

field of art, from building parade floats and costume design in her youth to painting and drawing in various media, and including mosaics and stained glass, later in life. A skilled seamstress, she loved making clothing for family members in their youth. She also enjoyed gardening, photography and, both foreign and domestic travel with family members and friends. She possessed a strong desire to lead an interesting life and her inner strength and wisdom provided guidance to her offspring throughout her adult life.

Funeral service for Nancy will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2019 at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego.

Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Manhattan. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday, July 21st at the funeral home. The family has suggested memorials to the American Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice, and may be left in the care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.

Jacquelyn Ann Benton, 73 of Centennial, Colorado, passed away July 13, 2019 with her family by her side.

Jackie was born on May 20, 1946 in Denver, Colorado to her parents Jack McLellan and Marion Kavan.

Jackie is survived by husband James H. Benton, children: Dianna Freimuth (JJ Jensen), Joanna Evans (Wayne), and James D. Benton (Janelle), grandchildren: Andrew Freimuth (Jordyn), Devyn Evans, Peyton Evans, Taylor Wood, Madelyn Wood, J.C. Benton, Seth Benton, Fletcher Freimuth (great grandson) and sister Kathie Hagen (Darryl).

Jackie graduated from South High School, Denver.

She further went on to work for Mountain Bell, Dress Barn, as well as a Teacher Assistant for Cherry Creek Schools.

Jackie was full of unconditional love for family and friends. She will be missed. All the little things she did were big things. Such as the Easter egg hunt, pumpkin carving, changing decorations in the house each holiday plus always asking anybody if there was anything she could do for them, or if they wanted anything to eat or drink. She loved to watch old movies, baseball and the Rockies.

Renaissance Festival offers an Larkspur event that stretches back 43 years draws 200,000 people during annual run

hen Christopher Baker wanted to propose to his wife, Rosie, he knew exactly where to buy the ring.

Both he and Rosie attended the Colorado Renaissance Festival in their childhood and teenage years. They’ve continued the tradition into adulthood and now share it with their 3-year-old daughter, Athena — while wearing the engagement ring and wedding bands they bought from a festival craftsman.

The event is a special place to them, the Central City couple said, and buying their rings there added to the sentiment behind them. They also love the culture of fantasy and escapism created by the event.

On an early July afternoon, the couple sat at the festival wearing headto-toe costumes with clothes they’ve acquired from event vendors over the years, looking back on their time within the village walls.

“It’s the only place in the state where you can walk around and see knights rubbing shoulders with storm troopers,” Baker said.

Sarah Periat of Commerce City agreed. The festival creates a place for people to get away from their daily lives and enter what feels like another world. She and her family spend weeks creating costumes. She personally sewed the dress she wore to the festival on July 7, when she dressed as an elf.

“We come every year. We like to dress up,” she said. “I think it’s the fantasy. People like to get out of their element.”

The family-owned-and-operated event has been running for 43 years, mostly at its location outside Larkspur. Jim Paradise is vice president and director of marketing while his father, Jim Paradise Sr., is the owner.

Paradise said it’s festival-goers like Periat and Baker who help add to the event’s allure, People aren’t required to come in costume, and in fact just a small percentage do, Paradise estimated. But they blend in with hired entertainers and make the fantasy more authentic.

There’s much more that goes into making the festival a long-standing success, he said.

“I think what makes it so appealing and gives us the opportunity to have it running for 43 years is the uniqueness of the event itself,” Paradise said.

Entertainers don’t merely perform from one of the grounds’ 10 stages but walk among the crowds in full costume and character to engage attendees. The royal court, including the festival’s king and queen, parade

The couple have attended for years and purchased their wedding bands at the festival. through the streets while families sip drinks and snack on turkey legs.

The permanent structures meant to resemble a 16th-century magical village are routinely remodeled, and the village as a whole was roughly one-third its current size at the event’s start years ago, Paradise said.

He believes the village in particular sets the festival apart from nearby, smaller Renaissance festivals.

“The difference and the advantage we have is we have created a very nice village for people to come out and really get away. We don’t have just tents

in a parking lot or tables set up in a field,” he said.

The event, which this year runs on Saturdays and Sundays from June 15 to Aug. 4, draws an average of 200,000 people annually and employs approximately 500 people.

For the Town of Larkspur, a community of slightly more than 200 people, that’s a big deal, said Mayor Marvin Cardenas.

“It brings us almost half a million dollars alone in sales tax revenue,” he said. “For years the town has been supported by the Colorado Renaissance Festival. They’re a huge economic impact to our community.”

Other revenue generators are limited in Larkspur, Cardenas said, although he expects pending projects like a campground and a travel center will boost the sales tax once the developments open.

In the meantime, Cardenas said, the renaissance festival continues to support the town financially, provides jobs for residents and nearby entertainment.

“It’s a huge benefit to the community. We’re so lucky to have them and

I hope they never go away,” Cardenas said.

The festival shop where Baker bought his wife’s engagement ring more than five years ago is still there.

Owner Da-oud Thompson, while standing under a sign reading “Wedding Bands,” said the Bakers are not the only couple to buy engagement rings there. He’s known families that came to him for two or three generations.

“That really feels good,” he said.

Thompson travels the country to sell at various festivals and has come to the Colorado Renaissance Festival for 35 years. It’s one of his favorite shows, he said.

“The people are interesting. They come dressed in crazy outfits,” he said. “I think we’re all devoted to making people smile and having fun.”

Research eyes women’s higher Alzheimer’s risk Scientists look at genes, protein in ongoing fight against devastating disease

New research gives some biological clues to why women may be more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s disease and how this most common form of dementia varies by sex.

At the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Los Angeles on July 16, scientists offered evidence that the disease may spread differently in the brains of women than in men. Other researchers showed that several newly identified genes seem related to the disease risk by sex.

Two-thirds of Alzheimer’s cases in the U.S. are in women and “it’s not just because we live longer,” said Maria Carrillo, the association’s chief science officer. There’s also “a biological underpinning” for sex differences in the disease, she said.

Some previous studies suggest that women at any age are more likely

than men to develop Alzheimer’s.

Scientists also know that a gene called APOE-4 seems to raise risk more for women than for men in certain age groups.

At the same time, women with the disease in its early stages may go undiagnosed because they tend to do better on verbal tests than men, which masks Alzheimer’s damage.

The new studies add more evidence and potential explanations for suspected variations between how men and women develop the disease.

Vanderbilt University researchers found differences in how tau, a protein that forms tangles that destroy nerve cells, spreads in the brains of women compared to men.

Using scans on 301 people with normal thinking skills and 161 others with mild impairment, they mapped where tau was deposited and correlated it with nerve networks — highways that brain signals follow.

They found that tau networks in women with mild impairment were more diffuse and spread out than in men, suggesting that more areas of the brain were affected.

It’s long been known that women do better on tests of verbal memory — skills like recalling words and lists. University of California-San Diego researchers found that women did better on these skills despite similar signs of early to moderate Alzheimer’s than men.

Using scans on more than 1,000 older adults, they found sex differences in how the brain uses sugar, its main energy source. Women metabolized sugar better, which may give them more ability to compensate for the damage from dementia and make them less likely to be diagnosed with it by tests that involve verbal skills.

Loved ones of the 13-year-old boy who was killed in the recent Englewood shooting stopped by the site where the incident occurred on July 17 to pay their respects. The site was decorated in flowers, cards, toys, treats and other items in honor of the boy. He was killed on July 14 near the 3600 block of the South Acoma Street/South Bannock Street alley.

Another 17-year-old was arrested on July 18 in Denver. Police said the four arrests mean there is no continuing danger to the public, while the case remains under investigation.

The shooting took place near the 3600 block of the South Acoma Street/ South Bannock Street alley. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office classified the death of the 13-year-old as a homicide.

An affidavit states that although the 18-year-old victim was wounded, he was alert and told responding police officers that he was walking down the alley when a vehicle occupied by several males pulled up behind him and the 13-year-old.

Footage from a security camera showed a white Chevrolet Impala following the two pedestrians into the alley, but the shooting ensued outside of the camera’s view. A resident’s security camera near the shooting caught a white Chevrolet traveling southbound on Acoma.

On July 15, the day after the shooting, a lieutenant with the Arapahoe County Sherriff ’s Office saw a vehicle that matched the description of the vehicle from the shooting. The lieutenant pulled over the vehicle in the 6500 block of South Dayton Street, but the driver was Maria Medrano, the mother of Perez-Medrano, according to the affidavit. She said Perez-Medrano bor-

rowed the vehicle on grounds of going to a gas station at noon on the day of the shooting, but didn’t return until around 5 p.m. that day. Perez-Medrano immediately left after dropping off the vehicle at Medrano’s home, according to the affidavit.

On July 16, police returned to Perez-Medrano’s residence, where they observed him entering another vehicle parked near the home. He was soon taken into custody, and he told investigators he had picked up unidentified friends on July 14. The affidavit says he told investigators that

he and his friends discussed setting up a drug deal with an “easy target” and planned to rob the 13-year-old and the 18-year-old at gunpoint.

Perez-Medrano and his friends made arrangments via cell phones and the Facebook Messenger app to purchase $250 worth of LSD from the 13-year-old and the 18-year-old, according to PerezMedrano’s statements in the affidavit.

Once the vehicle arrived for the alleged drug deal, an unknown person, who name is blacked out in the affidavit, exited the back seat of the vehicle.

When the 13-year-old then entered the

back seat of Perez-Medrano’s vehicle, another unknown person pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and put it close to the 13-year-old’s chest, according to the affidavit.

The 13-year-old then grabbed the gun and got out of the vehicle, the document states.

The unknown person who had exited the vehicle upon arrival allegedly shot the 13-year-old through the vehicle’s glass window, and the 18-year-old also was shot by someone whose name was blacked out, according to the affidavit.

Summer concerts fill the grass slope at Hudson Gardens in Littleton through the season, and at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 3, it will be with the country, gospel and patriotic a capella harmony of the Oak Ridge Boys, a longstanding quartet that travels across the country yearround. The group brings a trail of awards and three decades of charted singles putting its distinctive sound to a huge repertory of songs.

There have been 12 gold and three platinum albums, plus one doubleplatinum single.

“We traditionally work a lot,” said bass player Richard Sterban, adding that they had just finished recording their annual Christmas album in their “hot and humid” hometown, Nashville, on the day before we spoke. “We’re on the road about 150 days a year, but the only long trip is our Christmas tour … Usually it’s three days out, three days in, then three days out again.” From mid-November on they’re on the road — not around much at Thanksgiving.

COURTESY PHOTO Sterban, who began his singing career as a 6-year-old soprano on his New Jersey Sunday school, went on to sing bass with groups that included a spell with Elvis. Then, an invitation came from the Oak Ridge Boys, who were seeking a bass. He

wanted to be part of a group, with the accompanying “family feel” that such a connection brings, so he left the big-time stage appearances. He tells his story in an autobiography called “From Elvis to Elvira,” cowritten with Steven Robinson.

The group’s new Christmas album was produced by Dave Cobb, whom Sterban praised enthusiastically as a major Nashville name. Having his name on a project, such as the group’s recent “17th Avenue Revival,” is really important. Songs from that album will be a good part of their Hudson Gardens program, he added. Cobb “wanted us to go to church — return to our roots a bit,” Sterban remembers. And, Cobb chose most of the songs on the recording, “It took us down roads we musically hadn’t visited.”

It took old-time rockabilly, Elvis, Ray Charles, gospel songs, “marrying them with new material. (“He also had some contempt for other songwriters …”) Cobb has access to young songwriters, so the Oak Ridge Boys said “we’re in your hands.” He selects most of the content for an album.

One song they will certainly perform is the old hymn, “Amazing Grace.”

Survivors of Nazi horrors to give talks OAK RIDGE Holocaust survivor and son of Dutch resistors to share stories STAFF REPORT

Two people with ties to the Holocaust will share their experiences in the Littleton area in the first week of August in unrelated events.

On Aug. 6, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at the Aspen Grove shopping center will host a screening of “Prosecuting Evil: The Extraordinary World of Ben Ferencz,” a documentary about the life of the last surviving prosecutor from the Nuremberg Trials, where dozens of Nazi war criminals were tried after World War II. “Ferencz went on to advocate for restitution for Jewish victims of the Holocaust and later for the establishment of the International Criminal Court,” according to a news release.

“His fight for justice for victims of atrocity crimes continues today.”

The same week, Holocaustera survivor Dirk Van Leenen will give a series of talks in the Denver and Littleton areas.

Van Leenen is the author of three books about his family’s

experience during World War II, when his parents were members of the Dutch Resistance.

Van Leenen helped his father smuggle forged IDs to help Jews escape Germany during the Holocaust, according to a news release.

Van Leenen is scheduled to give six talks from Aug. 5-9.

They are known for singing it at George H.W. Bush’s funeral in 2018, but the connection between the Oak Ridge Boys and the Bush family is a long one.

“We met Bush in 1983, when we sang at the White House for President Reagan.”

Regan invited them to sing at the annual barbecue at the White House. “We were doing sound checks on the lawn when a tall man appeared. Saying he had to go to China and would miss the concert, he asked if they could do a mini concert then and started naming favorite songs — he was a fan of the band. We got to know him and his wife and went, with our wives, to visit them in Kennebunkport, Maine. We sang for them and he always requested ‘Amazing Grace’ and in advance, asked us to promise to sing it at his funeral.

“We were in Spokane, Washington then and flew in a private plane to Houston, took a quick shower and sang. Then, we returned to Kennewick, Washington, for a concert that night … We were able to keep our promise.”

What, aside from “Amazing Grace,” will they sing at Hudson Gardens?

“We make up our own set list each day,” Sterban said. “Joe Bonsall makes a set list up daily when we’re on the road, after a look at social media. He sends it to us and to the band.”

“We have 23 Number One country records,” Sterban adds. “Every night is different — a promoter may want a longer or shorter show … for example, a casino will want it shorter so people have plenty of time to gamble.

“When we come, we sing a lot of our hits, including ‘Elvira.’”

The most requested song, he said, is “Thank God for Kids.” It will be a good country music show, he said, family oriented, “one that touches lives and is also patriotic.”
