Students gain from mentor program Englewood, Sheridan teens receive guidance for life during, after high school

The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado’s mentor2.0 program is making a call for volunteers.

The program, which anticipates working with 250 students at Englewood High School this upcoming school year, needs 90 volunteers to work with students by September.

The mentor2.0 program gives students a college-educated mentor to help with social-emotional skills as well as assistance in preparing for life after high school — whether that involves going to a college, or entering the workforce.

Students participate in the program from the time their sophomore year starts until the year after their senior year. The mentor2.0 program came to Englewood High School during the 2018-19 school year.

“It’s an amazing program. I think it’s beneficial for all high school students to have someone give them one-on-one attention as they determine what they would like to do with their future,” said Amber Kelusky, Haley Robb and Raven Quintana. Mentor2.0 gives students a college-educated mentor in three Denver metro area schools.

Family Tree asks the community to count its comforts Nonprofit seeks donations through its #CountYourComforts challenge

Rich Karlis had just wrapped up his second season as a kicker for the Denver Broncos, and he was trying to figure out what to do with his free time. When he learned about Family Tree — a nonprofit headquartered in Jefferson County that works with people affected by child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness — he had his answer.

“I was fortunate enough to meet some really special people at Family Tree and quickly discovered where I can use the visibility of the Denver Broncos to raise awareness around domestic violence and child abuse,” said Karlis, who played for the Broncos for seven years until after the 1988 season.

During his 1984 season, Karlis’s field goals meant more than just points for his team: For every successsful field goal, he made a donation to Family Tree.

Now, Karlis and Family Tree are asking the community to support the nonprofit through the #CountYour-

Comforts challenge.

Family Tree is challenging the community to recognize comforts through the hashtag, make a small donation and challenge five others to do the same. Comforts can be little things from being able to turn on a light to having a vehicle to drive — things that some of Family Tree’s clients can’t do.

The #CountYourComforts campaign is meant to show that those impacted by child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness don’t have comforts that are basic needs.

“When you count your comforts

you’re helping start a conversation about the need for Family Tree’s services, which is imperative to our work,” said Scott Shields, Family Tree’s chief executive officer. “We know our community cares about the issues we address, and by asking people to acknowledge their comforts, we will create a new campaign regarding the urgency to confront these challenges.”

Adams lost her job, didn’t have any savings and gained custody of her three granddaughters. She sought help at Family Tree’s House of Hope, a shelter for women and children in Englewood, and was able to get a job that she still has to this day.

“I didn’t know what we were going to do, but I knew failure wasn’t an option,” Adams said. “The House of Hope was a lifesaver for the girls and I.”

Fire muster fans check out old, new gear

ide-eyed youngsters thronged Arapahoe Community College in Littleton on June 15, enthusiastically exploring dozens of vintage and active-duty fire trucks and emergency vehicles at the annual Fire Muster.

Organized by the Mile High Hook and Ladder vintage fire truck club and sponsored by Schomp Automotive, the annual event began with a fire truck parade down Main Street, and wound up at ACC, where kids took fire truck rides, danced in the spray of fire hoses and cranked the sirens on old-time trucks.

South Metro Fire Rescue — which now provides service to Littleton, as well as Centennial, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and other nearby areas — brought numerous vehicles, including massive ladder trucks.

The event is one of the high points of the year for firefighters and their fans alike, said South Metro Fire Chief Bob Baker.

“Littleton is the best little town ever, and we just have so much fun getting out here with kids and showing them what we do,” Baker said. “Who knows? Maybe some of these kids will get the bug and want to grow up to be firefighters.”

Arvada attorney Autumn Scardina is not ready to walk away from her case against Jack Phillips, the embattled owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood.

Scardina’s attorneys formally filed a complaint in Denver District Court against Phillips on June 5 over an incident that stems from June 2017 when she asked Masterpiece Cakeshop to make a cake that was pink on the inside and blue on the outside to celebrate her transition from male to female. Phillips denied her request, citing his religious beliefs, and Scardina filed a complaint through the Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

In March, the commission agreed to drop the case against Phillips and, in exchange, he agreed to drop a complaint against the state regarding discrimination against his faith. Despite the commission’s decision to drop the case, Scardina still had the right to pursue a claim on her own.

Phillips is most known for the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in his favor for refusing to bake a cake for a Colorado

gay couple in 2012, also because of his religious beliefs. The court’s decision last June did not address the issue of discrimination but concluded the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had been biased against Phillips’ religious beliefs.

“What has never been resolved is the core claim that his religion excludes him from Colorado law. We think that

is an issue that needs to be resolved,” said John McHugh, an attorney representing Scardina, in a statement to Colorado Community Media. “We have nothing but the upmost respect for religions, but we live in a nation of laws.”

Scardina’s lawsuit states Phillips discriminated against Scardina and used unfair trade practices.

Alliance Defending Freedom, a

nonprofit Christian legal organization representing Phillips, called the lawsuit an attempt “to largely rehash old claims.”

“The state of Colorado abandoned similar ones just a few months ago,” senior counsel Jim Campbell said in a statement. “So this latest attack by Scardina looks like yet another desperate attempt to harass (Phillips).”

a mentor in the program at Englewood High School.

Mentors and students are paired together based on a student’s interests in school, interests outside of school and career plans. Family background is also taken into consideration. Students are then given the opportunity to choose between two mentors.

Mentors and students email each other once a week and meet once per month for dinner and activities.

“It’s a cool way for pairs to have a digital safe relationship where they are talking about safe topics and an in-person vibe,” said Lance Holly, the program’s manager.

Students are required to take a mentor2.0 class where they learn how to work FAFSA (the standard studentaid form), apply for college and other topics that fall outside of academic curriculum.

The program completed its first graduating class at Sheridan High School this past school year.

“I feel like mentor2.0 was the reason I stayed on track. A hundred thank you notes, a hundred hugs, not even a hundred gifts would be enough to thank my mentor for everything she helped me with,” said Maria Martinez, who plans to attend CU-Denver this fall.

10 ways to love your brain June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month STAFF REPORT

This June, during Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association is hoping to raise awareness of this devastating disease by sharing 10 Ways to Love your Brain.

Nearly 6 million people in the United States, including 73,000 Coloradans, are living with Alzheimer’s disease, according to a news release.

The sixth-leading cause of death and the only leading disease without a prevention, treatment or cure, Alzheimer’s kills more Americans every year than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

“Research is still evolving, but evidence is strong that people can reduce their risk of cognitive decline by making key lifestyle changes,” Amelia Schafer, executive director of the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, said in the release. “Based on this research, we have developed 10 Ways to Love Your Brain, a collection of tips that can reduce the risk of cognitive decline.”

According to the release, these habits will help achieve maximum benefits for the brain and body:

Break a sweat: Engage in regular cardiovascular exercise that elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain and body. Several studies have found an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline.

Hit the books: Formal education in any stage of life will help reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Butt out: Evidence shows that smoking increases risk of cognitive decline. Quitting smoking can reduce that risk to levels comparable to those who have not smoked.

Follow your heart: Evidence shows that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke — obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes — negatively impact your cognitive health.

VOICES Hey kids, life is nice without that device

I

was standing at the crossroads a few years ago. Along came a fellow with a guitar.

Said his name was Robert Johnson and that he had something to sell, but not to me.

I told him, “Me too.”

He gave me a smile and then he played a tune. I found out later it was a song called “Dust My Broom,” which makes no sense grammatically, but it sure sounded good.

After he was through playing, he said, “What are you asking for in exchange?”

I told him I had a strange request.

I said I wanted resistance.

“Resistance to what?”

“Excessive social media usage.”

He said, “Man, what are you talking about?’

I told him I wanted mental health.

He said, “You know what that means, don’t you? You’ll have to give up your phone.”

I told him, “I can do it.”

New research shows that “phones raise student anxiety,” according to

an Associated Press article written by Carolyn Thompson.

She cites a National Education Association newsletter that labeled the anxiety a “mental health tsunami.”

She said, “Research now points to smartphone-driven social media as one of the Craig Marshall biggest drivers of (stuSmith dent) stress.”

She referred to a South Carolina high school teacher’s classroom experiment that had each student document every smartphone notification they received for one hour.

“One girl got close to 150 Snapchat notifications,” the teacher reported.

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State, said, “What a lot of teens told me is that social media and their phones feel mandatory.”

After the funeral — a look at being ready

he cause of death was influenza. For those of you following the story of my father-in-law, he spent nine weeks in the hospital due to the flu. While it is not unusual for a 90-year old to pass away, these circumstances were bizarre to experience. First the flu, then a fall, then complications with swallowing, and a myriad of everything that could go FINANCIAL wrong, did.

STRATEGIES Fortunately, Dad was lucid for several days during these events. While no one ever spoke about the fact he would never go home again, we kind of talked around the subject. “Hey Dad, do you still have the safe deposit box?” “Whatever happened to Grandma’s “Did I see a safe Patricia Kummer Hummels?” in the basement? Do you remember the combination?” It was a little private investigating along with ice chips and IVs. Everyone knew he was not going home except him, so it was a bit awkward.

Luckily, he had made his funeral arrangements when his wife died and most decisions around the ceremony and burial were in place. Except, don’t ever request a “duplicate

of my wife’s arrangements” unless you want a pink lining in your casket. Luckily, we caught that one.

We were in no hurry to dig into the will and estate documents, but it turned out that cleaning out the house was one of the best ways to mourn. All of the kids and grandkids were together working. We were laughing at old pictures and picking out mementos.

As we came across financial statements, we quickly saw he had beneficiaries listed on everything and there would be no need to open an estate or go through probate. Another toast to Dad! A death in the family reminds us that life is fleeting and there is no reason to delay getting your own house in order. If you do not have a trust, you should consider doing the following: • List POD (Pay on Death) on all bank accounts and CDs • Add a signer to your safe deposit box. It will be sealed instantly without one.

• Put TOD (Transfer on Death) on all investments. Consolidate your mutual funds and stock certificates into a brokerage account, then this will be easier.

• Add a beneficiary deed on the house title.

We didn’t even have cordless phones when I was a kid. The ages were darker than that: We didn’t have rap music.

Imagine that: We didn’t have cellphones or salacious, rhyming chants that all sounded alike.

Sometimes I don’t know how I made it without them.

Less than 20 percent of the students and staff at Belfast Area High School took part in the experiment.

Keep yourself humble to avoid a stumble

O

ne of my favorite things to see is a humble winner. Not only a humble winner, but also a humble leader who willingly shares the victory and gives credit to the team around them, their friend, or a family member. In a world where outrageous behavior seems to garner the most attention, I still try and purposely find examples of those humble winners out there who let their actions and results speak for themselves and show gratitude and appreciation for those who have helped along the way.

Now I love entertaining and exciting events. It’s good to see people fired up about their achievements and success. As a matter of fact, sometimes those feats are worthy of our applause.

The walk-off home run, the hole in one, the artist and song we love winning the Grammy, the movie we enjoyed so much winning the Oscar, the salesperson on our team who just closed a massive opportunity and so

many other examples. I love it, I applaud it, and I appreciate it.

What I appreciate more, however, is when WINNING the athlete thanks their WORDS teammates and coaching staff or acknowledges their family that has supported them along the way.

The celebrity who receives their award on Michael Norton stage and gives thanks to God, their family, and their co-stars.

The golfer who tips their hat, picks up their ball, and moves on to the next hole.

When things seem to be going really well, maybe even when things are going fantastic for us personally or professionally, it becomes easy for us to get caught up in our own success. Adoration

and praise go right to our head, and we forget our humility.

Conversely, when things are tough and going bad, we could become susceptible to blaming others, events beyond our control, and conditions for our loss. We hate losing so much that our humbleness goes out the window and the finger-pointing begins.

The humble winner knows that we win together, and we lose together. The humble winner remembers the hard work and the journey not just the victory.

The humble winner leads their team during the setbacks and slumps and instills confidence as the team or company climbs back to the top. The humble winner makes sure that others who deserve credit are duly compensated and rewarded

along the way.

Humbleness is like gratitude in a way. The more we show gratitude for what we already have and who we have in our lives, typically we will have more to be grateful for. Well the more we weave a humble nature into our winning and leading, the more we will win, and we will build a loyal following of people who want to work with us or become a part of our team.

Exciting entertainment and outrageous events are awesome and fun. And they become even more incredible when the team, people, or person receive their trophy, their award, or their commission with confidence and humbleness. Confident humbleness is indeed a character trait is appreciated by most, and a trait that comes more easily to some, and for others takes a bit of practice and effort.

In today’s “me first” society, the race for “likes” and “followers,” the humble winner and the

humble leader have learned that it’s “we first,” a race that we run together, and that their followers and fans are the encouragers who inspire them to greatness.

So how about you? When you win or lose, do you accept both humbly? If so, congratulations as I am confident that you are probably winning more than you are losing.

It is with immense sadness that we announce the unexpected death of Jason Linus Modlich, 34 years old, from pneumonia and sepsis on June 8, 2019 at UC Health Hospital.

Jason was born in Englewood, Colorado, on April 4, 1985 and was the beloved son of Char and Steve Modlich, who owned JUS COOKINS Restaurant in Aurora and then in Lakewood, Colorado for many years.

He was singing from the time he was a small child. He was a member of the Colorado Children’s Chorale, and then began acting and singing the lead roles in musicals, such as Crazy for You, at Conifer High School.

He continued musical studies with scholarships to Western State, the University of Northern Colorado and Metro State University of Denver.

In addition, he graduated from the Colorado School of Broadcasting and RALSTON

had a wonderful voice for radio commercials. He had recently performed at the Adams Mystery Playhouse in Denver.

He is survived by his parents, Nonna Gloria Patrona, Uncles Jack Patrona, Tom Modlich and Scott Aurand, Aunts Kathy Patrona, Judy Modlich, Charlene Rooker, Terri Modlich, Glorietta Patrona, and Rosanna Patrona-Aurand, Cousins Gian Aurand, Luc Aurand, Jesse Modlich, Kelsie Modlich, Claire Secrist-Ingalls, Brian Secrist, Beth Secrist, Kristen Rooker and Kelly Rooker.

he day before the Continental Congress’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife on July 3, 1776 about how he hoped succeeding generations would celebrate Independence Day. “It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty,” the letter, on the Massachusetts Historical Society’s website, reads.

“It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

Adams might be proud to see how the Denver metro area is following through on his exhortation, with fireworks lighting up the sky, sporting events, kid festivities and more.

FIREWORKS SAFETY Fireworks laws vary throughout each city, so if you’re planning on having your own fireworks show, make sure to check your local laws. Here are some tips about how to be safe with fireworks, courtesy of the National Safety Council, an organization that works to eliminate preventable deaths.

• Don’t use fireworks when impaired from drugs or alcohol.

• Do not let young children handle fireworks.

If older children use them, they should be under adult supervision.

• Use fireworks away from people, houses and flammable material.

The Denver Art Museum has opened two recent exhibits that offer another way to spend summer hours, when one can enjoy an up-close experience of color and light, in contrast to the truly exceptional vistas and outdoor experiences that we enjoy close to home or within a few hours’ drive.

“Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America” opened on the second floor early in May, running through Aug. 25, and might be of special interest to residents of Arapahoe Acres in Englewood and Arapahoe Hills in Littleton, who live in midcentury communities.

architecture and design curator Darrin Alfred and Monicka Obniski, curator of 20th and 21st century design at the Milwaukee Art Museum, where it debuted, the exhibition includes over 200 items in a variety of mediums: paper, textile, metal and wood furniture, toys, clocks and many other accessories. Items on exhibit are designed, among others, by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller Furniture Company, Irving Harper, Alexander Girard, Anne Tyng, Henry P. Glass, Estelle and Erwin Laverne and sculptor Isamu Noguchi, whose curvy, sculptural red playground piece is so inviting.

Playful related films show in several locations, recognizing the need to escape Cold War anxieties that were in and on the air daily … New manufacturing techniques made ownership of many items affordable — and a different attitude on child-rearing reflected the inclination to interact with good design.

One finds a choice of sets of “House of Cards” available in the special gift shop where one exits, as well as handsome design books and assorted toys for kids and grown-ups. A related project is “Make a Card, Build a House,” where visitors will decorate Eames cards for a giant house of cards.

Also at the DAM is the just-

opened “The Light Show,” co-curated by modern and contemporary art curator Rebecca Hart and Spanish colonial art curator Jorge Rivas Perez. It will run through May 3, 2020 and warrants more than one visit to let your mind play with a variety of experiences.

It illustrates how artists have used light (and shadow) over time to present symbols, images of physical light in the natural world as well as metaphorical, spiritual and divine representations of light. The museums’ vast collection was the source for objects in this exhibit. One has to reset the brain a bit to process the works in perhaps a different perspective from simply looking at a series of items in a row on a wall.

Rivas said: “The exhibition will explore and raise meanings about the emblematic meanings of light and darkness, including a section about the underworld.” Altars and deities appear as well as abstract patterns and the installation, “Corridor #2” by Lucas Samaris, last seen in 2003. (Take time to walk through this tunnel and experience it.)

A major recent acquisition (2017) by sculptor Fred Wilson: “The Way the Moon’s Afraid of the Dark,” is a good place to begin one’s visit on the fourth floor. It’s a huge chandelier, 4 1/2 feet wide and 6 1/2 feet tall, made with Murano blown glass, clear brown glass and steel.

Created for the 2017 Istanbul Biennial, Wilson incorporated Ottoman and Venetian lighting traditions —

historically opposed to each other.

Next to Wilson’s work — and illuminated by it — is the massive and elegant “Rain Has No Father?”

by African artist El Anatsui, with glitter reflecting light — and incorporating found materials: bottle tops and copper wire. (153 by 239 inches.) It was included in and purchased from an exhibit of his work at the museum in 2008 and we were so pleased to see it again.

Absorb works on the fourth floor, then descend to the third floor for more images of light and dark, ranging from Tres Birds Workshop’s “Infinity Screen Prototype for Lumina, Denver CO, 2014,” created with anodized aluminum and lighted dramatically.

(Figuring out the display logistics for this one piece took several days, Rebecca Hart said.) It’s a model for a panel that decorates a Denver building.

Walls also hold traditional religious paintings — many with reflective gold paint, that speak to a different sort of illumination.

Or, enjoy a Japanese lantern, a contemporary “Ashoka Lamp,” 1981, by Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsas and a gilded traditional Mexican altar (1958 — “an important conservation project” per Perez), as well as a handsome — and unexpected — contemporary altarpiece by American pop artist Keith Haring.

A glance in any direction yields a new discovery.

Symposium for those working with trafficked, abused STAFF REPORT

Pastors, ministry leaders, counselors, mental health professionals, counseling students and others who care for those wounded by sex trafficking or sexual abuse are invited to participate in the Restoring the Shattered symposium.

The two-day conference hosted by Denver Seminary, Deeper Walk International and Lydia Discipleship Ministries will provide best models, materials and information from leading experts in the areas of trauma and abuse. Up to 10 hours of CEUs are available.

“This modern-day slavery creates broken hearts and the need to minister to those being rescued increases daily,” Timothy Jensen, executive director, Deeper Walk International, said in a news release. “Restoring the Shattered is a symposium for those who wish to understand the unique challenges of ministering to the deeply wounded and sexually trafficked.”

The symposium will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Theme of college journal leaves room for creativity Progenitor for 2019 is available at two locations on campus

In spring semester, Arapahoe Community College students with an inclination toward writing, graphics and publishing enroll in English 231, where they learn much by compiling, designing and publishing the new issue of Progenitor, a classy, awardwinning art/ literary journal, issued annually.

“Progenitor,” a noun, is defined on the first page as “a person that originates a cultural or intellectual movement; a biologically ancestral form.”

Copies of the 2019 issue are free and can be found at Colorado Gallery of the Arts and in the college library, both on the main ACC campus at 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton.

Nine students and three faculty members created the 2019 edition from a large number of submissions received from writers who ranged from current ACC students to writers from the local area and across the nation — to an Australian poet and teacher in Queensland.

Students read submissions and selected the variety of art, nonfiction, poetry and fiction that appear within

An introductory statement by editor Mary Innerst says: “This year’s theme of `Theatre’ evolved from a visual subject in the early stages of the design phase into our literary theme for the entire issue. This gave us a wide umbrella to work under. We were able to capture a broad array of experiences, identities, themes and forms and to explore the plethora of work we received on quality, free from a restricting theme ... All the world’s a stage and together, we are the cast who performs upon it …”

Thirty-six entries were selected for publication and the project was wrangled by Jamey Trotter of the English Department, John Hall of the Graphic Design program and Trish Sangelo, a photographer/teacher who directs the Colorado Gallery of the Arts.

Each year, ACC holds a literary contest and both the nonfiction and fiction sections are led by a recent winner.

In nonfiction, the reader finds Renata Dolz’s “In a Teacher’s Shoes,” an account of her hectic day as a substitute teacher at Denver’s Dora Moore School, with a cumulative picture of the students she meets … “Could I handle that situation with the grace and sympathy she did?” one wonders.

It won in the literary contest at ACC. “El Gato” by Kate Niles of Durango, also a winner, tells of a sickly, hungry neighborhood cat, whose owner is in the hospital … It also tells of a neighborhood and some of the folks who live on the block and their interactions — a particularly nice piece and tied well into the theatre theme of the issue. Players of all sorts live in a neighborhood “known to real estate salespeople as Tupperware Flats.”

Illustrations include nicely designed/composed art photographs such as Holly Giannaula’s glowing “Busy,” a backlit speckled flower with a very busy bee, and Gillian Davenport’s mysterious portrait study, “Divine Maternal.” Who is that woman, anyway??? (Another story needed!)

Funding for Progenitor is provided by the English Department at ACC and presumably a copy has begun its journey into the annual awards circuit by now. We will await news with interest — this is probably the most handsome issue of the journal yet!

Readers are advised to stop by the Littleton campus to pick one up.

The Bible Speaks – suffering Why do people suffer? Why do they lose their homes to floods, their loved ones to shooters, their health to disease and their fortunes to charlatans? Just how are we to deal with such suffering?

We suffer because we live in a sin contaminated world. But suffering should teach us some things. When we suffer we learn to depend on God’s grace (2 Cor 12:9), to commit ourselves to God’s care (1 Pet 4:19), to persevere (Rom 5:3), to have sympathy for others who suffer (2 Cor 1:4) & to develop patience (James 1:3). We learn that Christ suffered in life as an example for us to follow (1 Pet 2:21). We learn that He suffered in death on the cross to make us righteous (1 Pet 3:18).

Area Walmart, Sam’s stores kick off fundraising Campaign to benefit Children’s Miracle Network hospitals

To date, Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, members and customers in Denver have raised $15.1 million for Children’s Hospital Colorado, most of it one dollar at a time. On a national level, Walmart and Sam’s Club have raised more than $1 billion for CMN Hospitals, the largest cash amount ever raised by one company for a nonprofit in North America, according to the news release.

The need is staggering — 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network hospital for treatment every minute, the release said.

To participate, shoppers can donate $1 or more at the checkout lane or self-checkout of any Colorado Walmart store or Sam’s Club and spread the word about the campaign via social media with the hashtag #HelpKidsLiveBetter.
