Englewood eyes body camera use for police

City council reaches consensus to explore purchase of equipment

Amid protests against police brutality and social injustice only minutes away from Englewood, Englewood City Council reached a consensus at a June 1 meeting to explore adding body camera equipment for police.

For the equipment use to become a reality, Englewood would have to appropriate funds toward the technology in its 2021 budget.

City documents say that police would have to hire three full-time police digital media technicians who would have a base salary that can range from $45,000 to $61,000 annually. Those digital media technicians would be responsible for providing complete case files of discoverable materials to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and duplicated digital media in accordance with the Colorado Open Records Act and the Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act, Englewood documents read.

Depending on the vendor Englewood could potentially choose to provide the technology, the city would have to pay $443,400 or $803,000 in the first year of implementing body camera use. Those numbers include the salaries of the police digital media technicians.

Englewood City Council has been having ongoing discussions regarding its 2021 budget.

“Let me be the first to tell you that we are long overdue for body-worn cameras. I don’t believe there is a member in my organization that wouldn’t embrace the practice of wearing those,” said Englewood

“I am very proud of what my folks do day in and day out, and a bodyworn camera would prove that day in and day out. Secondly, it provides some reinforcement to the community that we are holding ourselves accountable as well,” he added.

Collins acknowledged that even though Englewood Police would embrace body cameras, there are cons.

He pointed to issues like the cost of the cameras, having to keep up with the latest technology and how body cameras might not capture everything in an incident.

But body-worn cameras can help Englewood Police review video footage during internal investigations, hold officers accountable and increase public perception regarding transparency, Collins said.

Englewood City Attorney Alison McKenney Brown said that Englewood is the first city she has worked for during her 20-year career that doesn’t require officers to wear body cameras. Her career includes time spent working as a city attorney for multiple cities in the area around Wichita, Kansas.

Brown said officers who use body cameras don’t run them the entire time they are working. She said the cameras are usually turned on when an interaction starts and then turned off when the interaction is over. Additionally, cities where Brown worked require officers to keep a log of when they turn their cameras on and off so that they can be accessed for court purposes and any other type of need.

“There are security and safety issues that the police department is go-

ing to have to look at. These officers see us in all our stages of being,” said Brown. “And there are a lot of times when that would be inappropriate to be available to the public to look at.”

Collins said there would have to be a significant amount of training for officers if Englewood Police were to adopt body cameras and is unsure how long it would take to implement the technology.

The conversation about installing body cameras for Englewood Police took place a week after George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died while in police custody in Minneapolis. Video surfaced of the incident showing Derek Chauvin, a Minneapolis police officer, kneeling on Floyd’s neck despite Floyd saying he couldn’t breathe. Chauvin now faces charges of second-degree murder and other charges.

The incident prompted protests throughout the country, including in Denver, Castle Rock and Parker.

“If there hadn’t been bystanders there, then what would’ve been (Chauvin’s) report of what happened? There seems to be a lot more documented cases of police misconduct these days, and part of that makes you wonder if police misconduct increased,” said Mark Silverstein, legal director for the ACLU of Colorado. “It might just be that everyone has a cellphone now.”

Silverstein said the ACLU has long advocated for police departments to adopt body cameras and reiterated Brown’s statement of considering invasion of privacy issues if Englewood Police were to move forward with the technology.

“Sometimes in the past, it’s a citizen’s word against an officer’s of how things went down. Cameras are a tool that can provide an objective record, assuming the recording is complete, that I think aids the sorting out of conflicting versions of what happened,” said Silverstein.

County may push to loosen rules on restaurants, malls, movie theaters Public health, school officials also give update on classes in fall

Like numerous other counties across Colorado, Arapahoe County may apply to tweak the state’s pandemic-fueled restrictions on businesses, a county public health official announced during a June 4 virtual town hall event.

The event, which allowed community members to ask questions of Arapahoe’s public health officials and school district superintendents, focused mostly on how schools may reopen in the fall — and on the challenges families faced after the state closed schools to stem the spread of COVID-19.

But the conversation veered into other territory, too, when a caller asked about variances — or waivers — that counties can seek to exempt themselves from the state’s orders and instead follow their own guidelines on certain areas of public life.

Arapahoe County may apply to change the rules for houses of worship, indoor malls, gyms, restaurants and movie theaters, said Luc Hatlestad, a county spokesman.

At press time it was not clear what the county’s proposed rules would look like — it’s up to the county commissioners, and the variance applications could be finalized the week of June 8, Hatlestad said.

On June 8, the county announced it was allowing “qualified restaurants, bars and other retail food or beverage businesses” in unincorporated areas to expand outdoor dining service.

Colorado on June 4 loosened restrictions on places of worship, organized recreational sports, pools and playgrounds. Under the changes, gyms also can reopen to more patrons.

In light of those updates, Arapahoe County’s potential requests may change, Hatlestad said.

Counties’ applications are evaluated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, which sets the state’s restrictions in public health orders, such as the previous stay-at-home or current safer-at-home orders.

Masks, testing, online learning In the virtual town hall, a caller asked Scott Siegfried, superintendent of the Cherry Creek School District, about what working single parents should do without after-school programs that can watch their kids.

If the state ends up mandating social distancing and schools are forced to only have some students attend on a given day, day care is a “very

difficult issue I don’t know if we can support,” Siegfried said.

The district’s ability to provide day care or after-school care is unclear in that scenario, and “we need opportunities to plan,” Siegfried added.

Another caller asked about Colorado considering whether staff and students should wear masks.

Tri-County Health Department, the public health agency for Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, has not mandated wearing face coverings in any of its three counties — although the evidence Tri-County has seen suggests masks are helpful in reducing COVID-19’s spread, said John Douglas, Tri-County’s executive director. Tri-County likely wouldn’t mandate masks in schools on its own, Douglas added.

Tri-County has no plans to issue requirements different from the state or, “short of an unexpected development in one of our communities, issuing mandates or requirements for schools,” Douglas said.

Brian Ewert, superintendent for Littleton Public Schools, expressed “great concern” about requiring young students to wear masks because of how young kids communicate.

“It will be very, very challenging to teach reading, writing and mathematics to first- and second-grade kids if they are masked,” Ewert said.

Asked if teachers and other staff will be tested for COVID-19 regularly, Douglas said that’s a direction TriCounty would like to see for many workers, but such plans have not yet been developed.

Asked by a grandmother taking care of her school-age granddaughter about navigating online learning without being tech-savvy, Siegfried said the district will limit the number of online platforms used for learning — in the past couple months, there were many — and the district will provide videos this summer to train parents and guardians, teachers, and students so they’re better prepared to use the technology.

Graduation requirements may change Colorado in recent years adopted new graduation requirements for the class of 2021, and a caller asked if requirements will be changed in light of the pandemic.

Englewood Public Library reaches centennial Beloved city facility plans events in coming months

Just before World War I, 10-yearold Anna Spencer was crossing the street when an automobile ran over her and killed her, according to Englewood Herald collections. Her mother, Atta Spencer, came across $1.50 that Spencer had saved and pondered how she could use it to remember her daughter.

The Women’s Christian Temperance Union, a nonprofit that is dedicated to educating people about abstinence from alcohol, illegal drugs and tobacco, was raising money for a library in Englewood, but donated it to the Red Cross during World War I, according to the book “Englewood, Colorado: Its People and Its History.” And the only money that remained for the library was Spencer’s $1.50.

On May 14, 1920, after a public meeting that was attended by 20 residents who contributed to an Englewood library, the Englewood Public Library was formed with the help of Spencer’s contribution. Fast-forward 100 years, and the Englewood Public Library is

tion from the Englewood Historic Preservation Society, silent movies and a 1920s gala. Residents will also have an opportunity to purchase 100th birthday stickers for library cards. The sticker purchase will waive library fines for cardholders.

“The library has been a treasure.

There have been lots of people across the years that have used it as a meeting place where folks from book clubs and other kinds of groups can meet together,” said Doug Cohn, archive director for the Englewood Historic Preservation Society. “It has been a really good public service.”

When the Englewood Public Library first opened, it was located in a small room in a building on the corner of Girard Avenue and Broadway. The library only had 20 books and relied on membership support. By May 1921, the Englewood Public Library was home to 2,844 books. Toward the end of that year, Englewood City Council agreed to pay $100 a month to support the library.

“Englewood was a bump in the road, so we had to build our own (library). That has been a theme in Englewood history — if we see something that needs to be done, let’s just go and do it,” said Cohn.

“We don’t look for grants. We find a spot and put it together.”

The library outgrew the small room it was in and moved into the Crysler Building that included a J.C. Penney along South Broadway in 1929. In 1934, the library moved to a new Englewood city hall building at 3385 S. Broadway and to another building on South Bannock Street in 1951. By the time 1952 came around, the Englewood Public Library had 6,255 cardholders and 71,574 books in circulation. The library moved to another new Englewood city hall building on South Elati and West Girard Avenue in

1965 and remained there until 2000, when it moved to its current location at 1000 Englewood Parkway in the Englewood Civic Center.

A popular service the Englewood Public Library offered was the “Road Runner,” a bookmobile named by Janet Wooten, who was 6 at the time. The bookmobile ran from 1968 until 1991, when it was replaced by the “Rainbow Express,” another bookmobile that has since gone out of service. Among stops on the bookmobile’s route were Englewood’s elementary schools.

“It was well used not just in the school year but in the summertime too. In the summer, we did a lot of story times outside the schools, and the neighborhood kids would all come,” said Joan Clayton, who worked for the Englewood Public Library from 1986 to 2009.

Despite this year’s COVID-19 pandemic and not being able to open its doors to the public, the Englewood Public Library has been offering curbside pickup and remote services like live story time where Englewood librarians read books to children through Facebook Live.

“The biggest thing right now with the COVID-19 situation is being innovative and still connecting.

People find normalcy in library services,” said Englewood Director of Parks, Recreation and Library Christina Underhill. “We’re able to still have that connection with our community while we’re closed.”

State relaxes rules for worship houses, gyms, recreation Playgrounds, swimming pools also to open under safer-at-home update

Continuing to strike a balance between public safety and returning to normalcy, Colorado officials have released plans to loosen restrictions on places of worship, organized recreational sports, pools and playgrounds.

Under the changes, gyms can reopen to more patrons.

The updates to the state’s “safer at home” phase of social distancing come as COVID-19’s “reproductive number” — how contagious the disease is in Colorado — has ticked up after months of decline, and the second peak of the virus’ spread may be worse than the first.

“In most scenarios, we project the next peak in infections will be greater than the prior peak in April,” public health scientists led by the Colorado School of Public Health wrote in a May 29 report.

A June 1 extension of the safer-athome order — announced in an executive order titled “Safer at Home and in the Vast, Great Outdoors” — lasts through June but could be extended further.

The state Department of Public Health and Environment released draft guidance for houses of worship, outdoor and personal recreation, and some other items. Coloradans were able to give feedback until noon June 3 online, and the changes went into effect June 4.

Here’s a look at how restrictions have loosened, according to the guidance.

Laundry list of changes Houses of worship can welcome groups larger than 10 people under the new directives, which allow for a maximum of 50% capacity or up to 50 people per room, according to the state public-health department.

Seating should be arranged to maintain at least 6 feet in every direction between individuals or parties. A “party” includes members of a household who live together, the guidance says. Outdoors, groups from different households also can worship at least 6 feet apart.

The state strongly recommends that speakers and singers move much further back —about 25 feet — than others to maximize distance between them and the front row of attendees. Choirs should not be used at this time, given the strong risk of viral spread from singing, the state recommends.

The state plans to “continually review” the guidelines and welcomed feedback in a survey at tinyurl.com/ ColoradoCOVIDWorship by June 12.

Outdoor recreation could see a laundry list of changes in time for summer: Playgrounds can be open for up to 10 people at a time, and outdoor sport facilities such as tennis and

basketball courts, and fields, can open for up to 25 people at a time per court or field.

Outdoor pools also can open, with up to 50% capacity or up to 50 people, whichever is fewer.

“It is strongly encouraged to limit pool activity to lap swim,” the guidance says. “If you permit open swim, make efforts to reduce in-pool interactions.”

Indoor gyms, recreation centers and pools can hold up to 25% capacity, or 50 people — whichever is fewer — per room, as long as people can stay 6 feet apart. Pools are limited to 25% capacity or up to 50 people.

Use of any shared equipment is discouraged, and facilities must ensure all equipment is cleaned and disinfected between each use.

A new, guaranteed admission program will provide Colorado Community College System students pursuing an associate degree a more solid path to admission to a partner four-year university.

Arapahoe Community College is among the partners of the Bridge to Bachelor’s Degree Program, an agreement between the community college system and several of Colorado’s universities that will provide a more seamless and affordable pathway to pursuing a bachelor’s degree, according to a news release.

“Students are our mission, and during these challenging times it has never been more important for us to provide opportunities that allow our institutions to meet students where they are,” Joe Garcia, chancellor of the Colorado Community College System, said in the news release.

“Now may be time when the smart, strategic choice for many students is to stay closer to home. That is where our 13 colleges and 40 locations across Colorado come in.”

The Bridge to Bachelor’s Degree Program conditionally admits community college students to a partner university, without the need to take a

college placement test, and strategically places support systems where students need them most, the release said.

New, first-time students will be prompted to sign up for Bridge to Bachelor’s Degree during the online application process. Partner universities will collaborate with community colleges in joint academic counseling, streamline transfer processes through new IT data systems, and engage early and often with students to better support their transition to a four-year institution.

Some universities are even providing guaranteed scholarships to students who transfer to their institution.

The program will also help the state meet its goals set forth by Gov. Jared Polis in the recently adopted Roadmap to Containing College Costs & Making College Affordable, which, among other things, calls for strengthening transfer agreements and substantially increasing the number of students transferring and completing bachelor’s degrees, the release said.

12 metro police agencies helped Denver with protests Tactics, use-of-force rules differed among departments

In the days after protests against racial injustice and police brutality first broke out in Denver on May 28, the Denver Police Department called in backup from a dozen metro-area law enforcement agencies, each bringing their own equipment, tactics and use-of-force regulations.

City police departments and county sheriff ’s offices in Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson, Adams and Broomfield counties assisted in Denver.

As police and protesters clashed, with some protesters vandalizing or destroying property or throwing objects at police, officers deployed a variety of crowd-control methods, including firing “less-lethal munitions” at protesters, and deploying tear gas and flash-bang devices.

How Denver police oversaw and coordinated the response and crowd-control methods of officers from numerous agencies is difficult to determine -- the department did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Colorado Community Media.

But in a rebuke of police tactics, federal District Court Judge R. Brooke

Jackson issued a temporary restraining order against Denver police and partner agencies late on June 5, severely restricting their ability to use such methods.

“Although I do not agree with those who have committed property damage during the protests, property damage is a small price to pay for constitutional rights — especially the constitutional right of the public to speak against widespread injustice,” Jackson wrote in an 11-page decision, citing injuries to protesters including “loss of vision, fractured bones requiring surgery, deep laceration, loss of eyes, (and) ruptured testicles.”

“If a store’s windows must be broken to prevent a protestor’s facial bones from being broken or eye being permanently damaged, that is more than a fair trade,” Jackson wrote. “If a building must be graffiti-ed to prevent the suppression of free speech, that is a fair trade. The threat to physical safety and free speech outweighs the threat to property.”

The protests were spurred by the May 25 death of black Minneapolis man George Floyd, who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes. Investigators ruled Floyd’s death a homicide, and officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder. Three other officers have been charged with aiding and abetting murder.

Officers from a dozen metro-area agencies responded to the Denver protests, according to Denver police: Adams County Sheriff ’s Office, Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office, Arvada Police, Aurora Police, Broomfield Police, Brighton Police, Commerce City Police, Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office, Lakewood Police, Wheat Ridge Police and Westminster Police.

Though Colorado Community Media was not able to obtain comment from all 12 agencies, a sampling of respondents showed a variety of tactics and involvement.

Adams County deputies, for example, deployed flash-bang devices and two types of tear gas, according to Commander Paul Gregory.

In social media posts and in response to questions from journalists, Denver police repeatedly denied using flash-bang devices against protesters.

Adams County deputies detained protesters on behalf of Denver police, Gregory said, but said the detainments were not arrests.

Unlike many local agencies, Adams County deputies do not wear body cameras.

Gregory did not respond to a question about how many Adams County deputies provided backup in Denver.

Adams County Sheriff Rick Reigenborn did not respond to multiple requests for comment on his department’s tactics and crowd control methods.

The Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office sent 44 officers on May 31 and June 1, drawn from county deputies and officers from city police depart-

ments that form a joint task force.

The Jefferson County team made about 10 arrests, said Sheriff Jeff Shrader, including “three or four” people found to be carrying weapons including guns. Shrader said he was unsure whether Jefferson County personnel deployed tear gas, but said he was aware of one instance of a deputy firing “less-lethal” rounds at a fleeing suspect.

Shrader said he understands the outrage at Floyd’s death.

“We all witnessed a murder in that video,” Shrader said, adding he supports many elements of a police reform bill making its way through the state General Assembly.

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock declined a request for an interview on the matter through a spokesperson. The department did not provide details about its response.

In an interview on other matters with CCM’s Elliott Wenzler, Spurlock decried the Floyd killing, saying: “There is no reasonable, rational reason for any police officer to use that kind of restraint on someone.”

Other departments’ responses to assist in Denver appear to have been more low-key.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office sent between 40 and 50 deputies for several nights, said Sheriff Tyler Brown, but said they fired no shots or tear gas and made no arrests.

Brown said he sympathized with protesters, saying George Floyd’s killing was “an abuse of power people should be upset about.”

While Brown said he is confident Arapahoe County is a forward-thinking department, there’s always room for improvement.

“We need to make sure our ears and offices are open to have these conversations,” Brown said. “We can do this together.”

Metro Denver communities gather in protest Marches, other events follow George Floyd’s death When Hana Berhanu stepped up to the mic in front of hundreds at a June 7 Castle Rock protest, she first spoke about the anxiety she felt in deciding what to share that afternoon.

She didn’t know if she should talk about the secret friend she had in second grade, who continued playing with her despite the child’s parents forbidding it because Berhanu is black.

She could discuss the first time someone told her to “go back to where you came from,” Berhanu said. Or, she could talk about what it felt like, more recently, watching her hometown of Minneapolis burn on television, her longing to be there in person, protesting alongside loved ones, she said.

Instead, she decided to take the advice of a friend, she said, and say what was most on her heart. With that, Berhanu turned away from the crowd, leaned deep

Trout then shared the words the girl’s mother said she had recently told her white son, who had said he felt scared for his black sister.

“For white people, we know not to talk about it [racism], but we need to be uncomfortable to make change,” said the mom.

There were also several Golden police officers present at the march, including Police Chief Bill Kilpatrick. On June 2, Kilpatrick released a letter calling Floyd’s murder “repulsive, appalling and unconscionable.”

Or maybe, your wheel still looks like a wheel, but it’s a small wheel with your ratings lower in each category. Either way, with a flat tire, or a very small wheel, we will not get very far very fast as we try and make our way in the world today. And remember, it’s going to take everything we’ve got.

What does that look like? How do we give it everything we’ve got? Well it starts with balance in all the key areas of our lives. If you played along with the circle exercise above, you probably recognized where you are strong and identified areas where you need to apply some intentional effort to improve.

Anxiety and emotions are running high during the current pandemic.

Emails are hitting personal inboxes promising vaccines, treatments and products relating to the coronavirus.

The email recipient is then directed to click on a link to a website where their information is obtained and compromised. These emails ask for credit card information for products and services, which often never arrive.

Keep in mind, there are no current vaccines or treatments. If the solicitation is for a product or service, be careful. If truly interested, then research the company or organization on your own. Visit secure and official websites independently, not through the embedded links. Confirm the sender’s identity.

Look for typos and inaccuracies. While not all, many online messages and entities relating to COVID-19 are fake.

In addition, government agencies such as the IRS and Social Security Administration will never call, text or email you. These agencies will reach out to you through the mail, even during COVID-19. No legitimate agency will ask you to pay anything for your stimulus check nor will they contact via phone, text or email demanding that you provide sensitive personal or financial information.

Finally, there has been a recent surge in the number of charitable and cofunding entities, particularly around the coronavirus. Many are fraudulent, illegitimate and nonexistent. Do your homework. Research. Is the entity legitimate? Do not feel rushed. This is your money. Do not send cash in the

Stay alert to the variety of activities related to COVID-19, familiarize yourself with these scams and how they work. Your best defense is to stay informed and to report fraud to the FBI, FTC and to your local law enforcement agencies. Support fraud prevention.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR We can be better on race As a white woman, I attended a middle school where I was the minority. In high school (1970s), I went to Mississippi to help rebuild a black community and became friends with a black teen. He was shocked I would be friends and I was shocked that he was shocked. I was surprised that racism was such an issue even after the civil rights movement. I honestly thought that people would come around, because, duh, of course we are all the same and just our skin color is different. I had black friends and lived in a primarily black neighborhood for a time. I thought I understood.

However, over the last decade, black men began to tell how they are profiled and women how they raise their boys to be

safe. Recently, many videos show people harassed in everyday settings. Each story opens my eyes a little more to how hard it is to be black in America.

We need these stories to come to light to help us understand that this is everyday life, not an aberration. My grandson appears white and his cousins appear black. I’ve been contemplating how different their experiences are just because of their skin tone.

Living in my anti-racist bubble (as many, many white people do!), I wasn’t uncaring — just ignorant. It is time for change.

Our nation is supposed to be a shining light of freedom and equality in the world. We can be so much better than this!

Residents are finding creative ways to date during the pandemic

ownsend Wenzler of Arvada is just getting used to his new home.

Wenzler, 23, moved out to Colorado from Arkansas last August, and he came only knowing some family members and friends who live in the state.

And as COVID-19 closed social places where Wenzler would go to look to find people to date, he and other residents throughout the Denver metro area turned to dating apps like Hinge, Bumble and Tinder to meet other people.

“I don’t think it’s anything crazy, it’s just how it is, and young people are young and dumb and going insane and just wanting to branch out and meet each other. It’s impossible without the bars, so thank God for dating apps,” said Wenzler.

Since mid-March, mobile dating apps like Tinder and Bumble, where users swipe through a feed of profiles to see who is interested in them, have seen an uptick in use.

BBC reported that on March 29, Tinder users made 3 billion swipes worldwide — a record for the app.

Other apps like Bumble reported that it saw a 16% increase in messages sent during the week ending on May 1 as opposed to the week ending on March 13. Bumble also has a voice call and video chat feature and reported that it saw a near 70% increase in video calls during the week ending on May 1 in comparison to the week ending on March 13.

Wenzler had a date over to his home that he met on Tinder to cook her dinner during the pandemic. He said he thinks people are bored, and because of that, he believes residents his age aren’t afraid to forgo social distancing recommendations.

“Half of you wants to social distance, while the other part of you is going insane. I had more success (dating) toward the end of (the stay-at-home order) just because initially, people were more freaked out and less willing to go on dates with people they didn’t know,” said Wenzler.

A different way of meeting people Meredith Gerdes of Denver also uses Bumble to meet other people for dating. She believes residents who are looking to date are realizing how dependent they are on bars and restaurants to meet someone.

“The important message to bring across is no one is meeting anyone in a normal setting,” she said.

Gerdes said dating during the pandemic is restoring a safer environment for women to meet men. She said before the pandemic, some of her friends would go over to men’s houses after their only interactions were on Bumble.

“Rather than meeting someone with dimmed lights and alcohol at a restaurant or bar, you’re meeting in the park in broad daylight. It’s kind of cool because you are forced to be put into a different environment, so therefore, it could almost change the dynamic for whatever the relationship might be,” Gerdes said.

Gerdes has gone on a date to a park with a man who she met on Bumble during the COVID-19 era. She also added that before the pandemic, she met a man on Bumble who was visiting from San Diego, and although he is back in California, the two have been Facetiming and getting to know each other more.

“I am abiding to social distancing, and it has helped me learn more about myself. I feel good coming out of this knowing what I want and getting to learn more about myself,” said

Gerdes. “I think COVID-19 has enabled (residents) to get to know each other more.”

Forming a new relationship during the pandemic Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Sam Whitley met his now girlfriend Chelsea Benavides through a friend.

The two went out together to a restaurant, hit it off and decided they wanted to go out together again.

But COVID-19 forced restaurants to close, so Whitley and Benavides ordered take-out food and ate together at a park.

“After our second date, we decided to do social distance dating because we wanted to be cautious with what’s going and be safe. For a good while, we didn’t see each other at all,” said Whitley.

Wanting to still keep the connection with Benavides, Whitley dropped off a care package to her that included ice cream and dinner. After that, the two spent time video chatting and did online tours of places like Machu Picchu — while still keeping a distance from each other.

Whitley said his big idea was to set up a projector in his driveway with a screen. Benavides sat in her car on Whitley’s driveway, and he sat outside of it and kept a distance as the two watched a movie together.

“I think my mentality was trying to figure out what I would do on a typical date and how I can modify it so that we can still do a date like a typical one in a way to still social distance,” he said.

Whitley said dating during the pandemic has been a crazy time, but it has forced him to think outside the box in terms of setting up dates with Benavides. He added that it has been worth it, because he has had a great time with her.

“I feel like it allowed us to connect, and it caused us to have deeper conversations. It was a time to spend at a park or watch the sunset and catch up on each other’s days and to get to know each other and what our lives are like,” said Whitley. “It was really nice to be able to connect, and because there was so much other stuff going on, we really got to know each other. I really appreciate that.”

Spectators are “strongly discouraged” for adult sports, the guidance says. Spectators, like parents, are allowed for youth sports, as long as members from different households maintain at least 6 feet of distrance from each other.

Teams must maintain contact information and rosters and be prepared to support local contact tracing efforts if exposures occur, the guidance says.

“Consider participating in low or no-contact sports like baseball, cross country, or cycling instead of highcontact sports like wrestling or soccer,” the guidance says.

Under the prior safer-at-home order, Coloradans at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 were urged to stay at home at all times except to seek medical care.

The state public-health department now asks older adults — those 65 and older — and others, such as those with underlying health conditions, to stay at home except to perform necessary activities or for outdoor recreation, according to a June 1 presentation to reporters.

As of June 4, casinos, theaters, horse tracks and off-track betting facilities are still generally closed statewide, but counties may apply to open them via a variance, or waiver, from the state.

Hair and nail salons, spas, tattoo parlors, pet grooming, and massage establishments were allowed to be open since May 1, except for if a county had a stricter public health order in place.

High-profile coach stays optimistic Creek’s Logan ready to guide team after 2019 state football title

Dave Logan is accustomed to the situation he’s going to be facing this season, but with a few more complications created by the COVID-19 pandemic that have confused things.

Logan has been a head Colorado high school football coach for the past 26 years and has coached eight teams from four different schools to state championships.

He hopes to be starting his eighth season as Cherry Creek’s coach in three months after the Bruins won their second state title over the last six years with a 14-0 season during the 2019 campaign.

Logan has a simple answer when asked what he tells players returning off state title teams as they prepare for the next season as defending champs.

“That’s pretty simple, as far as I’m concerned,” said Logan, who was a basketball and football player at the

University of Colorado before playing nine seasons in the National Football League. “Last year was a great year.

It’s something that the team and coaches will never forget.

“But it’s over. That’s part of the progress you work on during the off season and summer as you get ready for a new year. What was accomplished last year was nice but it has no relevancy of what will go on this year.”

Logan hasn’t had much of an opportunity to deliver his thoughts to his players.

“The guidelines per our school district have not allowed for any contact from coaches in person,” explained Logan. “I’ve been in touch a little bit with texting, phone calls and our coaches have been in touch with the individual positions they coach. So we are sitting tight and see where we go from here.

“It’s not really the norm, for sure.

If the world was not the way it is, we would have been working our first day (June 1) of summer camp. We had an eight-week camp, three days a week and every other Saturday, and then we give them a week off and then we start school. Obviously we will have SEE LOGAN, P24
