The May 22 event honoring Doug Cohn as Englewood Citizen of the Year, held at the Malley Senior Recreation Center, included speeches, a plaque presentation, gifts of two pairs of suspenders plus the awarding of a wooden crown. Near the end of the ceremony, Mayor Joe Jefferson made a crown presentation to Cohn. “Former citizen of the year Kells Waggoner said there should be a crown for the citizen of the year and he sent one,” the mayor said. “It is wooden instead of gold or silver and is made of wood from three different trees that grow in Englewood.” Cohn donned the crown as he took time to laugh, to hug and joke with well-wishers and to urge them to join him in cake and coffee. He said he is the custodian of the crown for a year and will pass it on to the next citizen of the year. About 100 friends, family and city SEE COHN, P9

Mikhail Anthony Purpera is a suspect three times over. He’s a suspect in the killing of Englewood resident Patrick Murphy. He is in custody in Denver, as a suspect in a killing there. And Louisiana authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest on two counts of attempted murder after a shooting last Aug. 22 in the small city of Gonzales. Purpera is being held in Denver County Jail, facing Purpera charges that he fatally shot a 54-year-old homeless man named Wayland Busby last fall. On Nov. 5, a Denver park ranger found Busby’s body in a transient campsite along the west SEE MURDER, P21
