Englewood High graduates a proud class Students highlight diversity at commencement

With a graduating class of a little more than 70 students, Englewood High is a small school, especially in the middle of the Denver metro area — but its pride showed at its 2019 graduation ceremony.

“In the words of one of our coaches, we are no longer Englewood — we are Englewood,” student Thomas O’Connor said with emphasis, to laughs from the audience.

O’Connor highlighted the school’s recent athletic accomplishments, but speakers also pointed to the class boasting a Boettcher scholarship winner and a high score on an Advanced Placement exam. EHS held its graduation ceremony May 18 in the school’s gymnasium.

EHS principal Ryan West mentioned the class’ high attendance rate as among the reasons to celebrate the students.

“When I think of the class of 2019, I think of a class of leaders,” West said.

And students showed off their musical ability, too, performing a few songs that ran the gamut from Bruno Mars to Frank Sinatra.

Trauma survivors reunite with medical staff Swedish Medical Center annual event highlights how lives go on

Englewood resident Lee Brooke was on a hunting trip in Wyoming in 2016 when a bear attacked him and — after a brutal fight — left him with a broken shoulder, a crushed arm, five holes in his leg and no nose.

After two hours of yelling for help, he was rescued and transported by helicopter to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, where the medical staff worked tirelessly to put him back together.

Brooke, who has since returned to his job as an electrician, attended Swedish Medical Center’s second annual National Trauma Survivors Day on May 13. The event was held as a way to reunite trauma survivors with first responders, physicians, nurses and caregivers. Over five survivors shared their stories and thanked those who helped nurse them back to health.

“We don’t get a chance to say thank you, and that’s all I want to do. They are totally professional, and they become our family,” said Brooke, who was retrieving the elk he had killed when the bear attacked him. As the

Castaneda, an Aurora resident, has played professional baseball in Puerto Rico since he was 18 — and he is planning on returning to the game next year.

“I love my life so much and everything (Swedish Medical Center) has done for me,” he said. “They never let me go, and I’m so thankful.”

Bill Clayton honored as Citizen of the Year Former Englewood councilmember is active volunteer in city

Two people had a profound impact on Englewood citizen Bill Clayton in his life.

The first was his father, who moved to Denver in 1946 once he left the Air Force. He didn’t have any money, or a place to live, but the first thing he did was join the Red Cross. The other person was his uncle, who Clayton says would give the coat off his back to anyone without one when it was cold outside.

After Clayton spoke about his father and uncle, Englewood City Councilmember Laurett Barrentine highlighted Clayton’s accomplishments as he was honored as Englewood’s 2019 Citizen of the Year at a May 13 Malley Recreation Center event.

“Your father and uncle would be very proud of you. A 1964 Englewood High School graduate, Clayton, 72, held various management positions for Disney companies and currently provides property management services through Baltija LLC and TBAC LLC. He served on Englewood City Council from 1988 to 1991 and is an active member of the board of directors at Family Tree, the nonprofit that provides services to

those who experience homelessness, domestic violence and child abuse.

“The way we become a better place is we work together, and then it becomes a better place,” Clayton said at the ceremony. “I’m terribly honored and humbled by this honor.”

Clayton also is a volunteer reading coach at Cherrelyn Elementary School in Englewood and a volunteer at Colorado’s Finest High School of Choice.

‘When I think of Kendrick, I think of love’ Thousands honor Kendrick Castillo at a community celebration of life

Be industrious. Have integrity. Show love.

That was the overarching message at a May 15 celebration of life service at Cherry Hills Community Church. More than 3,500 people gathered at the church to honor Castillo, the sole fatality in the May 7 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch that left eight other students injured. Less than two weeks away from graduating, the 18-yearold charged one of the two suspects to save other students.

The crowd — a mix of STEM students and families, law enforcement, politicians, Douglas County School District leaders and local residents — filled the sanctuary of the Highlands Ranch church to celebrate Castillo, a young man who, by most accounts, lived and learned more in his 18 years than most do in a lifetime.

“Kendrick just seemed to be happiest when he was serving others, but he did this humbly,” Charlene Molis, Kendrick’s principal at Notre Dame School from kindergarten through eighth grade, said to the crowd. “We are all better people for having known Kendrick, and now he is our guardian angel.”

A group of young men, friends of Kendrick, carried a gray casket, adorned with bouqets of bright yellow roses down an aisle to the front of the sanctuary. On the stage were a kayak, black and red dress jackets hanging from the ceiling and an elaborate robot, all pieces of Castillo’s life. He wore the red jacket when he ushered at his church. He was on two robotics teams at STEM. And he loved to adventure outdoors.

Friends, family and teachers who spoke at the service painted a picture of Castillo and the impact he had on others.

Molis remembers Kendrick’s first day of kindergarten. He saw a kid crying across the room, so he walked over, put his arm around the child and told him it was going to be OK. He gave 110 percent in everything, Molis said. When he dressed up as a cowboy, he was the best-dressed cowboy in the room.

“When he went to Mass, he wore his signature, three-piece suit,” Molis said. Guests in the audience chuckled.

Castillo was a friend to many.

He met Jordon Monk in an engineering class. The two had a lot in common — detailing cars, tinkering with electronics, the movie “Wayne’s World,” the song “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“No matter how silly or crazy we looked, we didn’t care — because we had the time of our lives doing it,” Monk said.

Two pastors and a reverend, who each repre-

sented a different church in the Denver metro area, encouraged hope, love and healing in the community.

A member of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service organi-

zation to which Castillo belonged, along with a few of Castillo’s teachers, reflected on the difference Castillo made in the world.

Mike Shallenberger, Castillo’s engineering teacher for four years, laid over Castillo’s casket an honor cord for his involvement in STEM’s Technology Student Association.

“When I think of Kendrick,” Shallenberger said, “I think of love.”

In his father’s eyes, Castillo was a “gift” and a “hero.”

He was a man of faith, John Castillo told the audience. He knew right from wrong. He cared deeply about his family and friends.

“To carry on his life’s message, we need to be more like him,” said John.

His wife, Maria, was seated behind him. “When somebody is struggling and moving into darkness, you need to sit down with them and figure it out.”

John emphasized the importance of making time for one another, of being present. He wants to do just that for the friends Kendrick left behind. His door is open, he said. He’s a phone call away. He wants to hear the stories of his son.

“Love is simple,” John said. “I didn’t teach him that, he taught me.”

Legislators forming committee to focus on school safety Panel to be named

by June 1 in response to STEM School attack STAFF REPORT

Legislators are prioritizing school safety following the May 7 shootings at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

On May 17, members of the state House and Senate announced the pending formation of an interim committee focused on studying school safety in Colorado, according to a news release.

The committee will look at issues related to school safety, mental health and the prevention of threats to students, staff and volunteers statewide.

Supporters of the committee include House GOP Leader Patrick Neville, of Castle Rock, and Senate Minority Leader Chris Holbert, RParker.

In the release, Holbert pointed out that 178 school districts in Colorado operate under local control, per state constitution.

“We also have voluminous state

statute already on the books regarding emergency response planning and armed security in our public schools,” Holbert said. “This interim committee will begin its work by reviewing those statutes, the division of constitutional authority between school districts and state government, and then they will move forward on proposing solutions to better protect students.”

Neville pointed out what has been done.

“We began the process last year by providing financial assistance to schools to secure their facilities and fund trained personnel to enhance physical protection,” he said in the release. “We’ve also provided funding to enable professionals to come alongside students to assist with their personal needs should tragedy strike. We will do more.”

Two members from each caucus in both chambers will serve on the bipartisan committee, which will have the opportunity “to seek testimony from a wide range of experts to aid in their mission.”

Members of the committee — who will be appointed by June 1 — will meet three times during the interim session and have the ability to recommend legislation.

‘We have to say thank you’

When Doug Till saw the television news about a Jeep processional to honor Kendrick Castillo, the 18-yearold who died while trying to protect other students during a shooting at his school, he decided he had to pay his respects.

“Our society is getting to where we have to lay down our lives to protect other people,” said Till, who lives in Arizona but was visiting in Westminster, “and that’s what Kendrick did.”

About 250 Jeep enthusiasts gathered in Highlands Ranch on May 15 to ride in a procession ahead of a celebration of life service for Castillo.

Vehicles came from outside the metro area, with some having Arizona, Wyoming and Utah license plates, to honor the teen killed in the May 7 STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting. He was one of three STEM students who reportedly subdued one of the shooting suspects.

Castillo was passionate about his green Jeep Cherokee and enjoyed working on cars, friends say.

“There’s probably 2 percent (of participants) that know the family, let alone Kendrick, but that’s what this Jeep community is about,” said Doug McDowell of Highlands Ranch. “For me, it’s for the family.”

The Jeep lovers gathered at a spot about a mile away from Cherry Hills Communiity Church, where the

Castillo “was an angel in our midst,” said Alexander, a Highlands Ranch resident. celebration of life was to take place in the early afternoon. The Jeeps were escorted by Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office deputies on their ride to the church.

It’s rare that a civilian receives a processional led by law enforcement, but officials said Castillo embodied the spirit of the officers by giving his life to protect others.

“For us, our sheriff wanted to honor Kendrick and the school, because

it’s what we do. We’re here to protect people,” said Tim Ralph, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office chaplain. “We have to say thank you.”

About 20 students from Valor Christian High School — just across the street — walked over to line Grace Boulevard before the processional.

Juvenile STEM shooting suspect charged as adult Cases remain suppressed for at least two weeks

Approximately three hours before they would attend a memorial service for their slain son, 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo, Maria and John Castillo sat in the front row of a Douglas County district courtroom during hearings for his alleged killers.

They are a strong couple, said 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler, who said they intend to be at every hearing for the suspects in the May 7 shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch, which also left eight other students injured.

The Castillos watched as two key revelations emerged during the May 15 hearing in Castle Rock, the second court appearances for the two suspects, Devon Erickson, 18, and Alec McKinney, 16.

First, their cases will remain suppressed for at least two weeks, meaning many details of the allegations against them remain sealed. Authorities have not released any information on a possible motive for the attack.

Second, Brauchler has decided to charge the juvenile suspect as an adult.

Prosecutors filed formal charges against McKinney in court on May

15 and requested the juvenile version of the case be dismissed. Defense attorneys immediately discussed their request to transfer the case back to juvenile court.

Colorado Community Media did not name McKinney before the decision to charge the teen as an adult. Although he is referred to by his legal name of Maya Elizabeth McKinney on court documents, he goes by the name Alec, his attorney said.

On May 7, the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office identified him as a male but said the next morning further interviews revealed McKinney to be female.

His attorney told presiding District Judge Theresa Slade McKinney prefers male pronouns.

Both he and his co-defendant, Erickson, will return to court in June for status hearings as attorneys reconvene to discuss the ongoing investigation and what evidence is available in discovery.

From there, the court will schedule preliminary hearings.

Brauchler, in a media conference after the hearings, declined to comment on information about the case not discussed in open court because Slade chose to keep files sealed. That included the affidavit and probable cause statements.

But court records made available online earlier in the day show each suspect faced 48 charges going into the hearings.

Erickson faces a variety of murder charges, including first-degree murder after deliberation, first-degree murder with extreme indifference and attempted first-degree murder after deliberation.

He also was accused of burglary, arson, theft and providing or permitting a juvenile to possess a handgun, among other charges.

McKinney was charged similarly, along with possessing a handgun as a juvenile, among numerous other charges. Brauchler said he planned to charge him with first-degree murder.

In his first court appearance May 8, Erickson sat stooped deep in his seat, head hanging low and speaking only when Slade required he verbally answer a question. On May 15 he sat upright and peered at the judge through dark-framed glassed beneath hair half-dyed pink.

On May 15, McKinney entered the courtroom and smiled slightly at his attorneys. He did not speak except when responding to the judge, smiling again at attorneys after answering Slade’s questions. At one point he appeared to look back toward his family, expressionless.

Brauchler opposed setting a status hearing between the May 15 appearances and a preliminary hearing. The status hearing calls for Erickson to be back in court June 7 and McKinney on June 14. Preliminary hearings have not yet been scheduled.

“We are only drawing out this pro-

cess,” he said.

Defense attorneys for both suspects said they had not received any items of discovery and wanted time to review that information once it is made available.

They expected it to be voluminous, said McKinney’s attorney, public defender Ara Ohanian.

Slade granted the requests for status hearings so attorneys could be prepared best as possible, she said.

A portion of the STEM school where the shooting occurred May 7 remained closed off as of May 15 and under investigation, even as some students returned to classes. Brauchler said defense attorneys had been given access to the remainder of the site, which he described as about “97 percent” of the school.

He also had suggested unsealing case files except for the affidavit and probable cause statements.

Defense attorneys requested the case remain suppressed to protect witness statements from being tainted by information made public if files were released.

After the hearing, Brauchler told media he had referred an investigation into a private security guard who worked at STEM to 4th Judicial District Attorney Dan May after news reports surfaced that the guard may have fired his weapon in the direction of a sheriff ’s office deputy as law enforcement responded to the school May 7.

Noise impact of altered flight paths to be mostly small, FAA says Re-routing to be minimal in south metro area, according to plans

Despite concerns raised by local officials, a federal plan to reroute airplane traffic is expected to only cause small changes in south metro-area noise — much of which will be small decreases, according to the federal government’s analysis.

What’s more, the substantial changes in flight paths traveling to Centennial Airport only would involve about eight flights per day, according to a May 7 presentation the Federal Aviation Administration held in Centennial.

The potential airports affected are Centennial Airport, Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in the Broomfield area, Denver International Airport, Northern Colorado Regional Airport in Loveland and Greeley-Weld County Airport.

But that new path — called BRNKO in the FAA’s lingo and pronounced “Bronco” — only entails about six flights per day on average that would be moved from the older corridor, according to the FAA. About two daily would use a nearby route that ends up over the same south-metro area.

Centennial Airport sees about 1,055 daily takeoffs and landings combined, according to the FAA. Not much change, FAA says Because most proposed flight paths closely follow what’s being flown today, the only notable flight-path changes around Centennial Airport are the PINNR and BRNKO routes, said Adam Kuklin, a design team member on the Denver Metroplex project.

“With PINNR, they’re coming this way anyway,” Kuklin said, referring to a proposed route that travels south, roughly above Interstate 25, starting around Greeley and turning southeast over the Denver area.

The BRNKO route would take arrivals from the northeast that currently stay east of I-25 and move them farther north, joining up with PINNR near Greeley and traveling in that same corridor as flights move south.

Flights today already travel along roughly the same corridor as PINNR’s would once in the Denver area, and proposed flight paths would come in at the same altitude as today, Kuklin said.

The concentration — how close together the flights are over time — will be largely unchanged, according to the FAA. North of Interstate 70, the PINNR corridor’s estimated 12 flights per day could be more concentrated, but coming toward Centennial Airport, paths will be similar to what they are today, said Allen Kenitzer, FAA spokesman.

The FAA’s map shows a potential area over which BRNKO flights can spread out that covers parts of Englewood, Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village and Centennial.

“Current dispersion is close to what you’ll see a year from now,” Kuklin said.

And once BRNKO flights cross the City of Denver border into Arapahoe County cities, its flights largely cover the same areas as current routes do, according to FAA maps.

Across the south metro area — near Englewood High School, South Platte Park Carson Nature Center in Littleton, Kent Denver School in Cherry Hills Village, and Cherry Creek State Park — average noise level was expected to decrease by small amounts, as much as 0.3 decibels.

Across Centennial, noise also is expected to drop. Near The Streets at SouthGlenn outdoor mall, Castlewood Library, South Parker and East Arapahoe roads, and Smoky Hill Library, noise would decrease by as much as 0.8 decibels.

Near unincorporated Arapahoe County just south of Cherry Creek State Park — where residents report noise complaints in among the most concentrated numbers near Centennial Airport — noise would see essentially no change. Near East Alameda

Avenue and Interstate 225 in central Aurora, noise would increase by just 0.03 decibels.

South of Centennial Airport, noise could increase by up to 0.05 decibels in some Lone Tree and Highlands Ranch regions, although some areas would see decreases.

Conversation in restaurants generally hovers around 60 decibels, according to a Purdue University chart.

Upper-70s levels are annoyingly loud to some people, the chart said.

Only increases of 1.5 decibels or more in areas exposed to 65 decibels and up are considered to “exceed threshold of significance,” according to the study.

Officials watch cautiously Andrew Firestine, Centennial’s assistant city manager, noted that the BRNKO route is the proposed route that city staff is most concerned about.

But “when you look at air traffic in metro area, there’s traffic everywhere,” Firestine said at Centennial’s May 6 city council meeting. “I’m not sure you can go anywhere in the metro area where there’s not overflight.”

The FAA’s count May 7 of how many planes would arrive at Centennial Airport on different routes appeared to be the clearest picture yet of how the plan would affect the south metro area.

On the study, Centennial Airport is “still in the digestive mode,” said Deborah Grigsby Smith, airport spokeswoman.

The airport is in the process of asking the FAA for the raw data of the study, what the agency used to write the draft environmental assessment, Grigsby said.

“It’s an FAA initiative, not a Centennial Airport initiative,”’ Grigsby said. “We feel it’s incumbent on our part to make sure we understand all parts before making any reactions.”

Memorial honors influenza pandemic victims Nearly 1,500 died in Denver as disease swept world STAFF REPORT

A memorial marker honoring the victims of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic will be unveiled at 10 a.m. June 8 at Fairmount Cemetery in Denver.

The marker is a project of the Columbine Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Fairmount Heritage Foundation.

Blanche Kennedy, the first of nearly 1,500 Spanish influenza victims in Denver and nearly 7,800 across Colorado, was buried in September 1918 in a family plot in Block 39, Lot 6, according to a news release from the Columbine NSDAR chapter. After that, many victims of the pandemic were laid to rest at Fairmount in individual gravesites, both with and without headstones, the release said.

The memorial marker was placed in Block 85 at Fairmount, which the sponsoring groups believe is the perfect place for the marker honoring those lost to the pandemic and buried at Fairmount, the release said.

The memorial garden in Block 85 has gazebos, benches, heritage rose bushes, and a quiet space to contemplate those buried in the cemetery’s 280-acre boundary since 1890, the date the cemetery was founded.

The garden is directly adjacent to Block 84, where many victims of Spanish flu are buried in unmarked graves in Lots 3, 11 and 12.

The last of these pandemic victims died in June 1919.

Carpenter asked students to promise him that no matter where they go, they’ll always remember “the small-town school” they came from.

There are no prizes, but I will site salient examples.

This is an unoriginal contest: There have been others, partially stemming from the myth of the first six-word story, allegedly written by Ernest Hemingway.

One version is Hemingway won a $10 bet by writing this complete story in six words.

“For sale: baby shoes. Never worn.”

The website Open Culture states, “The extreme terseness in this elliptical tragedy has made

it a favorite example of writing teachers over the past several decades, a display of the power of literary compression, in which, writes a querent to the site Quote Investigator, `the reader must cooperate in the construction of the larger narrative that is obliquely limned by these words.’”

(A “querent” is “one who seeks.”)

Hemingway may have won a bet with that composition, but it appears he swiped the idea.

In 1906, when Hemingway was

Part of the estate plan should include a living will and Advanced Medical Directive that instructs the health care agent how to handle care and prolonged efforts to stay alive.

No one thinks in these terms if you are just going in the hospital with the flu. It seems there is never a good opportunity to discuss feeding tubes or ventilators. Perhaps when you are all together at the family barbecue?

Probably not, and thus many families are unprepared.

First be aware of the HIPAA laws designed to protect your parent’s privacy. What this means is you can’t really have a meaningful conversation with the doctor without the proper documentation.

Next, make sure there are proper care directives. This could be a matter of opinion of different family members.

One way or another, it is evocative.

Do a search for “Six-word story contests,” and you will find pages of guidelines and examples, although the only true guidelines needed are: be original, and stick with six words.

I think the best six-word story is only three words long.

“Less is more.”

An entire symposium could be based on it. It’s credited to architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohr, who adopted it from a Robert Browning poem.

Others have amended it.

“Less is a bore,” and “Less is less,”

and “More is more.”

If you are wondering about “More is more,” among the longest English sentences is Molly Bloom’s soliloquy in James Joyce’s “Ulysses.” It is 3,687 words long, or seven times the length of this column.

Annually, I try to read “Ulysses,” but invariably quit after the first page.

“For sale: `Ulysses.’ Never been read.”

In addition to six-word stories, there are six-word memoirs. There’s a book of them edited by Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser.

“Her dreams kept her reality warm.”

“Please do not sit on me.”

“Maybe art school was a mistake.”

That last one? Hits home, Craig?

Not at all. Art’s an antidote.

We have forgotten those who have lifted us up when we needed it. We have stopped appreciating the little things that people have done for us for many years. We begin to think that

everything we have and everything we have accomplished, we achieved on our own.

Having written instructions will help keep the sibling rivalry to a minimum.

Make certain you leave the hospital with a Plan of Care.

This helps keep everyone on the same page and makes the providers aware of their responsibilities.

The family will be busy enough with personal care, visiting, paying bills etc. It would be difficult to also be the person providing care as well.

Lester Dewey Sitter

January 17, 1941 - May 11, 2019 Lester Dewey Sitter, age 78, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019. He was born in Amarillo, Texas, on January 17, 1941, to Spencer Bell and Mary Francis Reynolds Sitter. Les had a typical west Texas childhood in McLean, Texas. He grew up in a ranching family although, except for summers, they lived in town—a small 1,500 population town. He grew up riding horses and working cattle as well as all of the other tasks related to keeping a ranch in good order.

He graduated top of his high school class and attended the University of Oklahoma for three years where he met his wife, Clara Marie Loewen. They were married in 1962 and moved to Austin, Texas for graduate school. Les received both a BA and LLB (later JD) from The University of Texas at Austin. In the 56+ years of marriage they lived in Texas (Austin, Shamrock & Amarillo), Colorado (Colorado Springs, Littleton & Highlands Ranch), and Alaska (Anchorage). Their daughter, Susan, was born (1965) while they lived in Austin and Scott was born a few years later in Amarillo (1969).

Les was a member of the Texas and Colorado Bar Associations. He was a practicing attorney in various settings including: government (Amarillo County Attorney office), corporate (two gas companies), and private practice. He was a “card-carrying” Optimist.

He was a storyteller (Spellbinders) and mentor in the Littleton and Denver public schools. He was a life member of bridge (ACBL) and enjoyed playing bridge and poker with neighborhood and Wind Crest friends. After retiring he was a volunteer assessor for Project CURE. He loved to travel and he and Clara visited most states in the United States and many countries.

Les is survived by his wife, Clara; daughter, Susan Elizabeth Sitter; son Scott Douglas Sitter (Michelle); grandchildren Tyler Scott Fejes (25), Clayton Sitter Fejes (22), Emily Camille Sitter (19), Sophia Marie Sitter (14), Kobi Christopher Heider (17) and Mia Marie Heider (15); all from Littleton. Also his sister, Sharon Sitter Fuller from Greeley; sister-in law, Polly Loewen Oliver (Jim) from Norman, Oklahoma; Linda Smith Loewen from Perry, Georgia; and many nephews and nieces. His parents and one brother, Spencer Dee Sitter, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at the Littleton United Methodist Church (5894 South Datura Street, Littleton, CO 80120) on Thursday, May 30, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the Optimist International Foundation (CO-WY District Youth Activities Fund) 4494 Lindell Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63108.

astle Rock’s museum is housed in the 1875 Denver and Rio Grande Depot, built with rhyolite from the local quarry.

It partnered with the Castle Rock Historic Preservation Board and the SONYA’S Public Art Commission to sponsor SAMPLER a new painting of the depot by watercolorist Cindy Welch, a 30-year town resident, who has painted images of a number of the city’s historic buildings.

The original Sonya Ellingboe watercolor will be permanently displayed at the museum, and limitededition signed prints will be available. Welch will donate 10% of sales of the print to the museum.

lot can change in eight years — something Littleton residents Kendra, Jason and Ash Alder can readily attest to when it comes to how Denver Pop Culture Con has evolved since its first iteration in 2012.

“When we first started going, it wasn’t nearly as big as it has become,” Kendra said. “When I was growing up, nerd culture was very taboo, but it’s done a complete 180.

When I would mention a lot of this stuff, people had never heard of it.

Now everyone knows.”

Immigrant Pathways Colorado celebrates successes Three speakers share stories at luncheon in Lone Tree

Immigrants were celebrated at an upbeat spring luncheon at the Lone Tree Golf and Country Club on May 3.

Three grantee-speakers shared experiences with more than 80 attendees at Immigrant Pathways Colorado’s annual event, sharing stories of families, communications, adjustments to a new home, bravery and at times, sadness, as well as success …

Immigrant Pathways Colorado has grown out of an initial effort that also created the City of Littleton’s Littleton Immigrant Resource Center at Bemis Library. From 2003-2009 Colorado Trust funded an initiative that focused on “integration of newcomers from around the world into the community.”

When initial funding dried up, a city department was formed that offers Littleton residents many services, including English as a foreign language.

Also formed was the South Metro Health Alliance, which took on medical services.

But there remained additional needs for extended reach perceived by the founding group, so Immigrant Pathways Colorado was formed, which president Susan Thornton described as “small but mighty.” It has raised more

Three current grantees with different backgrounds spoke about their experiences in a new home. Connie Shoemaker introduced the trio, noting that “Pathways are the direction along which someone moves … and can be smooth or filled with sharp obstacles.”

She asked the three speakers similar questions, on the topics of: “why and when you left to come to the U.S. and what you left behind.”

Srebrina Minchrvra said she was born in the United States in 1970, but then her family returned to Bulgaria to live. She immigrated to the U.S. in 2006 when she was a second-year university student, planning to be a fine

arts teacher. “I wanted to come back here.” She learned English and works as a massage therapist and certified nurse assistant, but wants to become a registered nurse. She was granted an IPC scholarship to obtain the necessary training at Arapahoe Community College.

She has not yet found the close community she left in Bulgaria, which only has 7.5 million citizens. She spoke of an especially kind taxi driver and help from her ex-mother-in-law with getting her green card. “My mom and sister and brother are still there …” Her husband is an American man. They have a son. She wants to go into education and help immigrants.

Abdo Sekreih arrived from Syria with his wife and three daughters, passing through the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait on the way. “I wanted a safe house for my three daughters — all young.” He spoke of Colorado’s “blue skies, color. There, all is black and white …” He learned English at the African Community Center. “It required a job very soon,” he said. His wife found one in a day care center in a week. He works at Community Banks of Colorado and hopes to improve the family income through real estate appraisal training. IPC can assist with that. “I started in the banking industry.” He had experience in accounting.

Shoemaker commented that many immigrants come with a background they need to use.

When someone in the audience asked

“what can we do to help?” the answer was “Hire us!”

Lisa Aryan, from Afghanistan, has two children. She told of a knock on the door there — men with guns wanted her husband. “After that, the only goal was to get out. It took a year — usually takes two or three years.”

Her husband got a visa first — he had worked as a translator for the U.S. Army and his life was endangered.

“We moved every few months …” She received a visa in another six months.

In the U.S., both had to work right away to pay the rent. Both went back to school at Arapahoe Community College. He’s pursuing an architecture degree and she’s in classes for nursing or dental hygienist degree. “It’s hard on the kids,” she said. Having a name like an American one has helped, she said.

She interviewed for a job without her scarf, but now wears it. Someone asked; “What helped you integrate?” Reply: “Having a friend come to visit you!”

Shoemaker observed: “That’s something everyone can do. Walk the pathway with these people.”

The newer name reflects a wider swath of mediums and influences than comics alone.

“Since inception, our event has been about inclusivity and bringing different fandoms together for a weekend-long celebration; comics culture has always been a key component but not the entire focus,” Angel wrote. “While it’s true that ‘comic con’ is often synonymous with pop culture conventions, we didn’t feel that it told the whole story.”

The worlds created in comics from Marvel, DC and countless other studios remain the wellspring for many films and television shows that have made nerd culture everyone’s culture — and the con is a great way to bridge the gap between these fans.

“At our store, that’s one of the things we talk about the most — how to connect people who see all the movies with the stories we have at our store,” said Jonthan Garnett, owner of Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles in Parker, which has had a booth at the con for about the past five years. “If you’re a fan of something you’ve seen onscreen, there’s a good chance we have something that will scratch that itch.”

Another way the con works to keep

bringing people back is by fostering the next generation of nerds. The event is a program of the Pop Culture Classroom, a nonprofit focused on youth literacy, Angel said. The work the group does all year is supported by the con. As for the actual event, all kinds of options exist beyond shopping and getting a photo with a favorite celebrity.

“Programming also includes exciting kid- and teen-focused activities and events in The Lab, which is a large space on the show floor dedicated to young folks,” Angel wrote.

“The lab activities can include anything from learning to draw a famous character, to presentations and workshops, to finding out how to one day work for NASA or become an actor.”

For Garnett and many other attendees and exhibitors, the con is a chance for real connection with fans of all ages.

“We get to talk to consumers and

fans, not just from the area, but all over the country,” he said.

Kendra said Ash particularly enjoys the con’s cosplaying aspect. But she loves immersing him in comic culture because of the positive way it affects him and other children.

“We take our niece as well, and their favorite part is taking pictures with as many cosplayers as possible,” she said. “I think it’s all a great influence on kids, and especially is great for reading. I always see it like going to Disneyland — you’re meeting the characters you’ve seen on the big screen, right there.”

Fort Logan bore witness to Western history

Beyond veterans’ cemetery is old Army post dating to 1880s

Mention Fort Logan to most people in the Denver area, and they’ll picture Fort Logan National Cemetery, where thousands of America’s veterans lay beneath rows of precisely-laid headstones.

But just up the hill from the solemn silence of the cemetery is the old Army fort itself, now hosting an array of mental health facilities, where much of the stately 19th-century architecture still stands.

Tucked away in far-south Denver near Sheridan Boulevard and Quincy Avenue, Fort Logan is “a place where you can step out of your car, take a moment to reflect, and envision the contributions of men who helped make Colorado,” said Bart Berger, whose great-grandfather Col. Henry Merriam once commanded the fort.

Visitors today can wander the fort, taking in the grand Victorian buildings of Officers’ Row, or pay a visit to the fort museum to gain a better sense of a place that played a role in pivotal moments of the American saga.

A growing nation By the 1880s, with the Transcontinental Railroad nearly 20 years old and the West’s indigenous people forced onto reservations, the Army was looking to close and consolidate its far-reaching network of pioneer-era forts, said Dr. Jack Ballard, a retired Air Force Academy history professor whose book “Images of America: Fort Logan” is one of the few sources that deals at length with the fort’s history.

Denver, by then a rapidly growing metropolis, seemed a natural location for a new urban-type fort, Ballard said, and “Denver leaders campaigned hard for the fort. It represented a huge economic boost.”

The first troops at what would become Fort Logan arrived from Kansas in October 1887. Named for Civil War general Alexander Logan, the fort soon began taking in soldiers from around the West. Col. Merriam, who would be the fort’s longest-serving commander, arrived with troops from Wyoming’s Fort Laramie in 1889, Ballard said.

Fort Logan’s soldiers soon found themselves part of history. In 1890, Merriam and six companies deployed by train to South Dakota, where they joined hundreds of troops encircling fleeing Lakota after soldiers killed Chief Sitting Bull, Ballard said.

Pullman railroad strike of 1894, according to historian Almont Lindsey. Troops from the fort traveled to Trinidad in southern Colorado, where they protected deputy marshals as they arrested dozens of union leaders. They would be put to use amid other labor strife in northern New Mexico.

The fort also became home to a piece of high-tech equipment in the 1890s: an aerial observation balloon, manned by daredevil aerialist and tightrope walker Ivy Baldwin.

Baldwin and the balloon — dubbed the General Myer — deployed with troops from the fort to Santiago, Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898, though the balloon was soon shot down by Spanish artillery.

A new century As America’s military priorities increasingly shifted overseas in the 20th century, Fort Logan took on new life

“By the time of the First World War, the countryside was starting to fill in, and there wasn’t enough room to maneuver,” Ballard said, but the fort proved invaluable as the country mobilized for the war.

Thousands of recruits and draftees mustered at Fort Logan, filling rows of tents stretching across the grounds before heading out to coastal military bases to be shipped overseas.

New Deal-era work programs shored up and expanded Fort Logan’s facilities during the period between the World Wars, Ballard said, before reaching a new fever pitch as American involvement in World War II loomed.

The fort became a subpost of the Army Air Corp’s Lowry Field on the east side of Denver, according to Ballard, and later added a convalescent hospital. As many as 5,500 men were stationed at the fort during the war, with many training as clerks.

Many temporary buildings were added to the fort grounds during the war — mostly temporary wooden structures, of which few remain.

After the war, the fort was declared military surplus, and used for a time as a Veterans Administration hospital, before eventually being handed over to the State of Colorado in 1960 to become a mental health hospital.

Place of healing Today, the fort’s idyllic grounds make for a therapeutic environment for patients dealing with mental illness, said David Polunas, the director of the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan.

“Having dozens of acres with mature trees and big grassy areas is a calming, healing environment for our patients that you might not easily find elsewhere in the Denver suburbs,” Polunas said. “It’s quiet and spread out in a way few other facilities are.”

The hospital now has 94 beds for persistently mentally ill patients, Polunas said, down from about 400 beds when the facility opened — part of a nationwide effort toward moving mentally ill patients out of inpatient facilities.

The Bible Speaks – Why?

On May 7 a school shooting occurred in Highlands Ranch resulting in the death of a promising young man. We instinctively ask “Why, why, why.

Why do these tragic events happen”? We will probably never know for sure, but the Bible gives us some clues as to how we should react to such events. One such event happened in Jesus’ time when a tower fell & killed 18 people. Jesus gave no answer as to why, but taught that we all must be ready for our death through repentance (Luke 13:1-5). He continued that lesson by saying that God is patient & not willing that any should perish (Luke 13:6-9).
