Pandemic may change downtown plan’s focus Englewood advocates are focused on assisting businesses through crisis

Englewood advocates still have their eyes on creating a downtown master plan for the city, and while those plans remain in the works, the team is focusing its attention to helping businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In January, the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce and the City of Englewood announced their intentions to create a downtown plan by the end of the year for the city — known as the Downtown Matters initiative.

Part of that plan includes creating a downtown development authority that would act as a steward for Englewood’s commercial core, managing new development, supporting local business and strengthening the city’s economic sustainability, Englewood documents say.

“Our strategy is to stay the course and see if we can still make a November 2020 date for the downtown development authority. One of the things we’ve seen is that across Colorado and the states, downtowns are looking how to utilize their downtown districts, including downtown development authorities to become important

The Downtown Matters initiative is focused on creating an economic development tool to rebuild and reposition downtown Englewood and to encourage private investment. It will cover South Broadway, the Englewood City Center and areas around Craig Hospital and Swedish Medical Center. Englewood residents and business owners are providing input and participation into the plan.

“It is going to be challenging to keep the retailers and property owners involved to the extent we would like them to be. The financial impacts are going to be such that the funding for the ultimate downtown development authority is probably going to have to be less initially than what was anticipated,” said Poremba.

“The property owners and business owners just won’t have as much financial capacity to contribute to the downtown development authority. We are going to have to adjust the budget requirements, at least in the initial year or two to reflect that,” he said.

The Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce, which promotes Englewood businesses, still believes in the process of the Downtown Matters initiative, according to the chamber’s executive director, David Carroll. He added that the process for the plan could possibly get pushed out into the future.

“I don’t think the pandemic negates the idea of a downtown development authority. I think it almost strengthens the idea of why it is important,” Carroll said. “What the downtown development authority can do during the pandemic is do the same kind of work the chamber has done in a more direct focus in the central downtown district.”

The chamber has launched efforts to assist Englewood businesses like Time for Takeout, a promotional list of city restaurants that offer to-go meals, curbside pick-up or delivery options.

Cities that have a downtown development authority like Longmont are

playing a role in helping businesses weather the storm through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Longmont’s downtown development authority (LDDA) is part of a coordinated response team in the city that meets daily to help local employers and employees impacted by COVID-19 . One of the ways the LDDA has assisted businesses is by setting up virtual calls each week with different business sectors to talk about best business practices — how businesses are functioning during these times and more.

The LDDA is currently working on a resiliency plan to assist businesses once they can return back to operating normally. Non-essential businesses like barbershops are closed until at least April 30 while restaurants are not allowed to offer in-person service on that same timetable as well, due to an order from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

“We worked hard to get to know our businesses and to be that connector and advocate for what they need not only during these times but during the recovery. We are trying to gather all the information we can about how these impacts are real, what they look like and what people are struggling with,” said LDDA Executive Director Kimberlee McKee. “You can only respond to what you know.”

Brad Nixon, owner of Nixon’s Coffee House in Englewood, is part of the Downtown Matters initiative’s steering committee — a committee responsible for providing regular updates to Englewood City Council about the plan.

Nixon said he thinks it is important to think about how Englewood can build a downtown area, but now that idea is secondary to getting economic activity started back up in the city.

“Everybody shutting down, having to close their businesses for a period of time — that is rough. There are businesses that are going to need help getting started back up,” said Nixon.

Englewood approves rent assistance City enters deal with county to help residents who meet qualifications

Englewood is looking to help some qualifying residents with rent assistance amid widespread job losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At an April 6 Englewood City Council meeting hosted on the Zoom video communications service, council voted unanimously to approve a rent assistance program that locks Englewood into an intergovernmental agreement with Arapahoe County.

The program launched on April 7 and allows for Englewood residents who have a household income of 175% or less of the federal poverty level to apply for rent assistance.

The federal poverty level is used to determine what programs and benefits are available to residents.

An example of a household income of 175% of the federal poverty level would be a household of two people who combine for an annual income of $30,170, according to Englewood.

The city is contributing $200,000 to the rent assistance program from its housing fund in Englewood’s budget. Arapahoe County is assisting with processing applications for the program that is scheduled to last until Dec. 31, according to the intergovernmental agreement. The goal of the rent assistance program is to combat homelessness in Englewood.

“There are a whole lot of people who are experiencing reduced hours, or they have been laid off entirely.

We needed to do something,” said Englewood City Councilmember John Stone. He said he would like to see the program be available to households who have an annual income of 250% of the federal poverty level.

“We can’t allow our residents to end up homeless because they can’t afford rent or because they can’t go to work or make a living,” he said.

To find an application for the program, visit englewoodco.gov/coronavirus under the Community Resources tab. the city, a copy of their current lease, proof of household income or lack of it, a W-9 from their landlord, proof of who lives in their household and their landlord’s contact information.

Residents who wish to receive assistance from the program must also fill out an application that asks for basic information like an applicant’s name, address, race, household size, education level, income, employer and more.

Rent assistance is limited to one month per household, and Arapahoe County has sole authority over application approvals. Arapahoe County will process rent checks that will be provided directly to landlords.

“Arapahoe County is happy to partner with the City of Englewood for this important program to give people the short-term assistance they need to stay in their homes and hopefully get back on their feet,” said Arapahoe County Commissioner Kathleen Conti in a statement to the Englewood Herald.

An April 2 report from Colorado Public Radio and The Associated Press said Colorado had processed 80,558 claims for unemployment since March 14.

Englewood City Manager Shawn Lewis said the city reached out to about half of Englewood’s largest apartment complexes and found about a quarter of those complexes are providing a three-month deferral on April rent while another quarter are offering around a two-month deferral on April rent.

“So far, we think landlords are working with folks. The real unknown there is maybe it’s a garage apartment or something like that where we don’t have access to a database of landlords,” said Lewis at the meeting. He added that the city hasn’t reached out to a number of the “low to moderate income” apartment complexes.

Colorado businesses face warnings, adjustments Some stores, including Hobby Lobby, raise red flags amid COVID-19 restriction

A local bicycle shop seeing more demand. Record stores leaning on mail service just to survive. A large craft store chain defying the government and staying open amid the pandemic.

COVID-19 has drawn a line in the sand for businesses — critical vs. noncritical, as deemed by the state — and it’s a distinction that has cost thousands of jobs across Colorado as the state’s restrictions on which businesses can operate remain in place for at least the next few weeks.

“It’s been really tough, honestly. We had to let most of our staff go,” said Michael Baca, a manager at Black and Read book and music store in Arvada.

The shop temporarily closed a few days before the state ordered “noncritical” businesses to reduce their in-person workforce by 50% by March 24. Then came Colorado’s stay-athome order, tightening the grip even further and effectively closing many noncritical businesses altogether.

Bicycle repair shops landed on the long list of critical industries, along with health care, infrastructure, agriculture, grocery stores and many more — a turn of luck that’s working out well for The Bicycle Shack in Arvada.

“We’ve actually seen a pretty big influx of — I don’t know if you’d call it ‘panic bicycle buying,’” laughed Brian Shuey, a manager at the shop, who guessed that the bump in demand might be the normal rush the store sees in spring amid tax returns.

Although the shop can stay open, it has taken steps to reduce the number of people inside at one time — the stay-at-home order requires businesses to keep people at least 6 feet apart as much as possible.

Perhaps the most critical industry of all, health care, is facing shortages of personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks they need to stay safe while treating COVID-19 patients, forcing workers to use such equipment longer than it would normally be worn.

And outside of work, health care employees are dealing with many of the same changes everyone is, said Andrew French, chief medical officer for St. Anthony North Health Campus in Westminster.

“Physicians, nurses, technicians and other clinical caregivers are considered essential personnel and are still reporting to work for their shifts,” French said in emailed statements. “They are dealing with the closure of schools (child care), depleted store shelves and other service challenges like many others in our community.”

St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood has seen an increase in COVID-19 patients, but based on projections from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, “we

anticipate that volume will continue to increase,” French said April 2.

The Centura Health system — which includes the St. Anthony buildings and locations in Castle Rock, Littleton, Parker, Denver and farther out in the state — is building capacity and adjusting non-urgent medical care to prepare for the surge, according to French.

For sick health care workers Despite the dire need for health care employees to come to work, French has not heard of complaints about workers not being allowed to stay home — or being told by supervisors not to get tested for COVID-19 — if they have symptoms.

“Centura has policies in place regarding work restrictions for an infectious disease diagnosis or symptoms. We also have policies around caregivers returning to work after they have been sick,” French said, adding that if a worker wants to be tested, Centura has locations set up with its occupational health team to assist them.

Service Employees International Union Local 105 — the Colorado branch of a union that represents

workers in health care, manufacturing and other industries — also has not heard reports from union members about health care workers or other employees not being allowed to stay home with COVID-19 symptoms or being told not to get tested if they have symptoms, according to David Fernandez, Local 105 spokesman.

The union represents Kaiser Permanente health care workers.

Tri-County Health Department has not heard such complaints regarding health care facilities, said Gary Sky, department spokesman.

The statewide stay-at-home order “expressly prohibits anyone who is sick from working, even for a critical business like a health care facility,” Sky said.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment also has not received such complaints, according to Ian Dickson, a spokesman for the department.

“If someone did experience one of those scenarios, they should first contact their local public health agency and then, if necessary, file a report with the (state) Attorney General’s Office at covid19@coag.gov,” Dickson said.

Child care enrollment takes hard hit Some centers still open, others suspend operations during response to virus

“Sanitizing like crazy” is just a part of life at child care centers, said Pam Kenney, director of Thomas Learning Centers. But in the wake of COVID-19’s arrival, the past weeks have seen Denver area daycares take a variety of extra precautions to make sure their kids go home germfree.

At Denver Child Care Center, teachers are working to help younger children stay spaced out even when they don’t understand social distancing. At Thomas Learning Centers, which has locations in Westminster and Lakewood, students are avoiding sharing toys, such as by using their own labeled bags of Play-Doh each day.

At both centers, ritual sanitizings of surfaces and toys have turned into multiple rounds of disinfecting, and every child goes through a quick wellness check before entering the classroom.

also covers the full cost of child care tuition for these families.

For Alexis Archuleta, an essential worker with Denver Human Services who has two sons attending Denver Child Care Center, “I wasn’t sure I’d be able to work from home if the center didn’t stay open,” she said.

“This really is the only feasible option. I couldn’t really have my boys around while I’m talking to the people I’m assisting,” she said. “The center is so open in helping people that need it. I appreciate they’re taking precautions and that my kids are safe.”

For some child care facilities, the ability to continue doing business has offered hope that the centers can weather the storm during a time when more parents are staying home with their kids than ever, reducing a widespread need for child care.

But the measure hasn’t been able to eliminate all of the centers’ challenges. Even with some new referrals coming in to Denver Child Care Center and some regulars continuing to attend each day, enrollment has dropped significantly, said Rich Silvas, executive of operations. In turn, the daycare has had to cut staff members’ hours by about 50%, he said.

“Our staff is our family. We’re always worried about each other and it is difficult to say we’ve cut half of your work schedule, because that’s half of your income,” he said. “It’s hardship for everybody.”

At her centers, Kenney has also seen a drop in attendance due to the pandemic. On April 3, just four children were in attendance and the daycare has also cut staff hours, employing just one teacher a day instead of two.

However, the center is also committed to staying open for those who don’t have other options.

“We’re just trying to help our existing families, who are very appreciative,” Kenney said, “and trying to be part of the community.”

That’s been the case for KidsTown Drop-In Child Care, which has locations in Highlands Ranch, Parker and the Smoky Hill area.

A fourth KidsTown location, in Castle Rock, closed at the end of March because of the financial loss it has incurred from the coronavirus.

Regional director Hollie Wilson said because families are typically referred to full-time centers before part-time centers like KidsTown, the daycare’s enrollment dropped by about 99% with the spread of the coronavirus, forcing the centers to close.

Without steady revenue coming in, “we’re working with our business association or our local banks to make sure we do have that line of credit,” she said. “Our hope is to open our doors as soon as possible.”

In the meantime, the centers haven’t lost touch with the families they serve on a daily basis, Wilson said.

“We’ve been in contact with our regulars to ask if there’s anything they need and we’re going to be sharing books, crafts and sensory activities on Facebook,” she said. “We’re taking the next three to four weeks and we’re going to step it up (online) so this can continue to be a support even after we open again.”

Back in Denver, Silvas is likewise looking forward to the pandemic coming to an end and business returning to normal.

“We know we are going to fill up right away when this is over,” he said. “And the big question is, how long is this going to last?”

Many grocery and home improvement workers are being rewarded by their companies for enduring several weeks of chaotic shopping and for putting themselves at risk to provide important goods and services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some essential businesses are giving workers enhanced benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic, from one-time bonuses to free lunch during shifts. What is deemed essential versus nonessential has been somewhat controversial. Certain franchise locations in Colorado like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s stayed open as long as possible before being forced to shut down under threat of citation from state authorities.

Grocery stores, feed stores and hardware stores are considered essential. Essential businesses, as defined by the state, are businesses that provide critical infra-

structure, manufacturing, retail or other services, health care operations, construction or necessities to those in need.

Many stores have implemented plexiglass partitions at check lanes, adjusted store hours to give employees more time to rest, clean and restock.

Home Depot has seen a surge in activity since the start of stay-at-home orders, according to a release from the company.

Home Depot announced April 1 it has added 80 hours of paid time off for all fulltime hourly workers, 40 for part-time, to be used any time during 2020 or paid out if not used. Full-time workers age 65 of older have been given 160 hours of paid time off, 80 for part-time. All full-time employees will be given bonuses of $100 per week and $50 per week for part-time.

Albertson’s Companies, which owns Safeway and Albertson’s supermarkets, announced April 7 it has joined the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union in a joint effort to seek a temporary designation of “extended first

responders” or “emergency personnel” for supermarket employees for priority in things like COVID-19 testing or access to personal protection equipment during the outbreak.

Kroger, which owns King Soopers, is offering companywide paid sick leave, enhanced benefits for child care and mental health services, a benefit giving some hourly workers access to their paychecks faster, and companywide pay raises of $2 above base rate.

“Kroger’s most urgent priority is to provide a safe environment for associates and customers, with open stores, comprehensive digital solutions and an efficiently operating supply chain, so that our communities have access to fresh, affordable food and essentials,” said Rodney McMullen, Kroger’s chairman and CEO, in an April 1 release. “We are so proud of our dedicated associates who are on the front lines serving our customers when they need us most. A huge thank you to all of our associates, whose efforts are noth-

ing short of heroic.”

Murdoch’s in Parker, a feed and supply chain, has been giving employees free lunch, bought from local restaurants, during their shifts. At-risk employees have been given paid time off and all employees received small bonuses.

Lowe’s announced in an April 2 release the company is providing a $2 an hour wage increase for all employees for the month of April. The company is also providing employees with personal protective equipment.

“We are continually working on ways to protect and support our associates and our customers during this time when we are all adjusting how we work and live,” said Marvin Ellison, Lowe’s president and CEO in the release. “I’m announcing these new operational changes as we continue to keep the health and well-being of our associates and customers top of mind, especially as they look to us now more than ever for essential products, services and support.”

Fertilizer: arch enemy of waterways.

Man suspected of stealing Englewood police vehicle The vehicle was damaged and no injuries were reported

Englewood Police have arrested a man who is accused of stealing a department vehicle.

During the night of April 7, Englewood Police were called to an Army/Navy Surplus Store at 3524 S. Broadway St. on reports of a disturbance, according to a news release.

When officers arrived, they made contact with 27-year-old man who requested mental health services, the release says. Police then gave him a courtesy ride to the Santa Fe House, which provides mental

Then there was Hobby Lobby, a craft store giant that stayed open in spite of the state’s order, arguing it provided “essential products” amid the pandemic in an April 3 statement. The company received a letter dated April 1 from the Colorado Attorney General’s Office demanding that it close.

“For the avoidance of doubt, and as you have been previously notified, Hobby Lobby is not a ‘critical business’ and is not otherwise exempt,” the letter says.

‘We’re hanging in there’ The staff at Black and Read is smaller than many other businesses that have been forced to close to the

health services, at 6509 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton.

The man changed his mind once he arrived at the Santa Fe House and decided he didn’t want mental health services anymore, according to the release. Officers then gave him a ride to the area of South Federal Boulevard and West Yale Avenue.

After the ride, the man exited and gained control of

public, but the music shop is still feeling the impact.

“It’s been rough — we’re hanging in there,” said Baca, whose shop let go of about five employees and told them to file for unemployment assistance.

He hopes to bring them back when the economy starts to revive.

The employees still on board saw their hours cut, and some come to the shop to list items for sale online.

Englewood Police were able to locate the vehicle thanks to GPS, and after numerous police agencies, including the Denver Police Department, assisted in locating the vehicle, it crashed in the area of South Zurich Court and West Warren Avenue in Denver.

Tri-County was seeking clarification from the state regarding noncritical businesses filling delivery orders, Sky said.

Record shops aren’t considered critical businesses under Colorado’s order, but if a business is closed to customers, it can still operate, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. At least one other record shop in the west Denver metro area had announced its plan to continue mail service.

“The orders cannot anticipate every circumstance, which is why the governor has stressed the importance of following the spirit of the order and not seeking loopholes,” the department said in a statement. “A single person working alone in a workspace that is closed to other people would not violate the order.”

Other stores of all kinds around the metro area have shut down for now, such as Forever Flowers and Gifts, a family-owned business in east Centennial along Smoky Hill Road.

“We are all healthy and safe as of the close of business on Wednesday, March 25,” a voicemail recording for the business said. “We sincerely have the best wishes for the health, safety and prosperity of all our customers. We look forward to serving again serving your floral needs whenever we are able to reopen.”

In Westminster, Catherines plussize apparel shop left a message on its Google Maps listing.

“For the well-being of our store associates and customers, our stores are closed temporarily. We will keep you informed as our stores reopen. We look forward to serving you with styles that love you on Catherines.com.”

Warnings, voluntary compliance Hobby Lobby is one of the most highprofile businesses to defy stay-at-home orders, and the letter it received from the state Attorney General’s Office April 1 directed all of the company’s Colorado locations to immediately close.

At the Hobby Lobby in Parker on April 1, a co-manager said the store was open but that by the next day it was to close based on instructions from his superior.

The store had not received complaints from employees about staying open, and it had not been contacted by authorities about the stay-at-home order, said the co-manager, Oscar, who did not feel comfortable giving a last name.

Jefferson County Public Health, Denver Department of Public Health and Environment, and Elbert County Public Health are some of the other agencies in the area.

The state recommends local public health agencies or local law enforcement first reach out to the business to seek voluntary compliance, according to a fact sheet by the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.

“We are unable to discuss specific companies or details about the types of reports we are receiving at this time.

We are working with the state health department, local agencies, and the governor’s office to review reports, determine which post the greatest risk to public health and safety and (on) appropriate enforcement action,” said Lawrence Pacheco, spokesman for the office.

Tri-County Health Department has resolved many reports of violations through education and voluntary compliance, according to Sky. “We have received 244 complaints, and most are able to be resolved over the phone,” Sky said April 3. “We have issued two formal warnings to businesses who have failed to come into compliance with the public health order.”

That includes one bar or restaurant and one retail facility.

RTD slashing service amid COVID-19 outbreak Ridership down 70% during pandemic as people lose jobs or work from home

The Regional Transportation District is cutting service by 40% in response to plummeting demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stay-at-home orders issued March 26 have forced nonessential businesses to close through April 26. Most people who can work remotely are at home, but many essential workers still rely on RTD for travel.

“We’re still providing an essential service to people, just obviously a lot of people don’t need the service right now because so many people are being asked to stay at home and work at home,” said Marta Sipeki, spokesperson for RTD. “That will mean maintaining the level of service for people who are riding the bus and train currently.”

RTD saw a 70% decrease in ridership resulting from the spread of COVID-19, according to a March 24 news release, as well as an 85% drop in fare revenue and reduced overall sales tax revenue. The massive dip in demand led the district to make drastic cuts

proved a proposal to reduce service of its bus and light rail to its weekend hours beginning April 19.

Some buses will still run seven days a week but on a Saturday schedule, meaning they will operate the same hours they would on a Saturday.

The Saturday schedule makes less frequent stops to certain places and generally makes fewer loops to the suburbs and downtown Denver. A few bus lines will not have service altered at all. Many lines with low ridership will discontinue during the pandemic. The light rail schedule has been altered to a Sunday hours schedule, which also makes less frequent stops.

The April 19 service change will the COVID-19 package, as RTD refers to it, and the service change proposals originally slated to take effect May 17 prior to the outbreak.

“The current decrease in RTD ridership is unrivaled in the agency’s history, and by taking this action, we exercise responsibility and care for our employees and our customers,” RTD Interim General Manager and CEO Paul Ballard stated in the release. “This also allows us to continue to serve those who rely on us, including health care and food service workers and others who are critical to fighting this crisis, while also giving us flexibility to restore service as ridership returns.”

RTD WAIVES FARES, MOVES TO REAR-DOOR BOARDING The Regional Transportation District is offering rear-door boarding and fare-free rides across the RTD system.

The changes took effect April 5 and will continue until further notice.

Rear-door boarding gives bus drivers more distance from boarding patrons.

Passengers with disabilities are allowed to board in the front, where the only handicap platform is available on RTD buses. Some buses on longer routes only have front-door boarding and will continue boarding at the front as well.

The 16th Street Free MallRide and Free MetroRide are suspended due to low ridership, according to the release.

Some MallRide buses will be used on regular routes because of their multipledoor boarding capabilities and enclosed driver compartments.

Facing a bus driver and light rail operator shortage at the start of this year, RTD reports it has enough drivers to fulfill its new service needs.

RTD stated it intends to retain all its bus drivers and light rail operators through the crisis, putting them to work in other areas if needed.

“Once everything subsides and things start going back to normal and ridership increases, we need our workforce to ramp up,” said Sipeki.

Drivers without a designated route are on standby to fill different needs throughout the district. Bus and rail operators on standby are also being put to work in various other jobs in the district as well.

Bus drivers are to limit the number of people who can board a bus based on six-foot social distancing guidelines recommended by health experts.

If a bus reaches the new capacity at a stop, the driver will request another RTD bus to immediately come to pick up the remaining passengers.

Certain rows of seating on RTD

buses are roped off to encourage social distancing. Sipeki said with fewer people per bus and light rail car, people have been minding social distancing without any need for enforcement. If needed, RTD can add cars to certain light rail lines to carry more passengers safely.

RTD’s shuttle service for physically limited people, Access-a-Ride, is offering grocery delivery service to Access-a-Ride customers for free. Senior Manager of Paratransit Services Paul Hamilton stated in a March 30 news release that the district is aware food is one of the first things people can lose access to during the pandemic. “When the public is being told to reduce their exposure to others, the last thing we want to do is ask them to leave their homes if they don’t

have to,� Hamilton said.

Grocery pickup is available at King Soopers, Safeway, Community Ministry Southwest food bank, Senior Hub Senior Solutions and Adams County Food Bank. RTD announced April 2 it expects to receive $232 million through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act signed by President Trump on March 27. The funds can be used for any operations costs associated with COVID-19, including salaries and expenses related to protective equipment and cleaning supplies, according to the release.

Looking down the road, it is difficult to say what RTD service will look like after the initial stay-at-home order. Concerts will happen again, and the Denver Broncos begin preseason games in August, two events that tend to draw large crowds taking light rail and bus services. The new service changes will take effect through most of September. “It will all depend on what the situation is at the time,â€? Sipeki said. “It also goes back to how people are feeling about going to a game ‌ there’s just so many unknowns right now. I just hope things get back to normal soon.â€?

Movies make sense in a world that doesn’t

uring these strange days and nights, many of you are watching films to pass time.

So am I: mostly comedies, mysteries, and, believe it or not, love stories.

Yes, I am a bread crumb-encrusted old frog, but deep down (very deep) I am a romantic, bread crumb-encrusted old QUIET frog, with some love DESPERATION story suggestions.

I can’t, however, recommend “Love Story,” the 1970 movie based on Erich Segal’s book. Segal was a Harvard, Yale, and Princeton professor who should have known better. I hope Craig Marshall he grimaced all the way to the bank.

Smith Everyone knows about “Casablanca,” so I will skip it.

The same goes for “When Harry Met Sally” and “Titanic.”

One of my favorites is “Amélie,” directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and

starring Audrey Tautou. It is exceptionally clever, visually exquisite (note: reds and greens throughout), and has a perfect soundtrack.

“Amélie” was my introduction to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a female Bo Diddley.

Have you seen Travelocity’s garden gnome commercials? The marketing team swiped the idea from “Amélie.”

A drama released in 1946 is guaranteed to make your eyes blurry when Frederic March returns from the war and surprises Myrna Loy. “The Best Years of Our Lives” includes an unforgettable scene of a B-17 and B-25 graveyard.

Look for: armless Homer (Harold Russell) asks Butch (Hoagy Carmichael) if he knows “Lazy River,” when Butch is playing piano in his Boone City bar.

Carmichael composed “Lazy River.”

Boone City is based on Cincinnati.

“Random Harvest” isn’t on my list, nor is “Wuthering Heights,” but both of them get votes from other film critics.

Is it possible to fall in love with a painting of a woman? Ask Dana An-

drews who bids on a presumed dead woman’s portrait in “Laura,” also starring Gene Tierney.

Taking the presumed dead infatuation further, I recommend Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo.” James Stewart falls in love with Kim Novak twice: once when she portrays Madeleine and then when she reappears as Judy.

John Wayne’s wooden acting goes well with Margaret O’Hara’s feisty performance in John Ford’s “The Quiet Man,” brilliantly filmed (except for the annoying rear projections) in Ireland.

“A Star is Born”? Not for me but for many others. Every era has its own, going back to Fredric March and Janet Gaynor, up to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

How about some offbeat love stories?

Top of my list is “Harold and Maude,” starring Bud Cort, Ruth Gordon, and Cat Stevens’ songs.

At the time of filming, Gordon was 51 years older than Cort.

Cat Stevens appears in a funeral scene; look closely.

The strangest love story? “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to

Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.”

It starred Peter Sellers who portrayed Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, United States President Merkin Muffley, and Dr. Strangelove.

Strongly recommended: “Roman Holiday.” If you haven’t seen it, I won’t spoil the ending. Audrey Hepburn co-starred with a man her own age, unlike “Love in the Afternoon” with Gary Cooper (Cooper was 28 years older than Hepburn), or “Sabrina” with Humphrey Bogart (Bogart was 30 years older than Hepburn).

Hepburn, by the way, was born Audrey Kathleen Ruston.

There’s “Say Anything,” starring Ione Skye and Jon Cusack.

Skye is Scottish singer Donovan’s daughter. Donovan had hits with “Catch the Wind,” “Mellow Yellow” and “Jennifer Juniper.”

Finally, Charlie Chaplin’s love for the blind girl in “City Lights” is incomparable.

Someday when this is all over ...

I

n last week’s column I made a recommendation to replace the word react with the word respond as sometimes we never just react, we either overreact and make things worse, or we underreact and don’t do enough. But when we respond, we tend to think a little more clearly and WINNING do exactly what is WORDS needed.

I have seen so many posts on social media where people pose the question, “When this quarantine is all over, what will be the first thing you do?” And I have seen some really funny replies, and Michael Norton some pretty scary replies. After enjoying a laugh, I started to think about the question again.

What will I do when this quarantine is all over?

After running through several things that I thought I might do, it

occurred to me that I couldn’t really think of that one thing that I really wanted to do. There are just too many unknowns right now. So instead, I focused my energy on what I can still do during the quarantine. And what I want to do now is give as much hope and encouragement as I can to as many people as possible so that I can make a difference in some way.

Years from now people will be talking about this time that we are all going through. The novel coronavirus and its impact on our society, the economy, and sadly, the loss of life. They will also talk about how we as the people who lived through it responded. And right now, we are the authors of what people will say in the future. Other than maintaining social distancing, wearing masks, and washing our hands we really can’t control what is happening around us. But we can control what is happening within us and our homes.

A huge shout-out to the medical community and everyone on the front lines, and to each and every first re-

sponder out there, we appreciate you all so very much. We don’t call a first responder a first reactor, do we? No, we call them a first responder. When we are given medication that doesn’t agree with us, we typically say that we are having a negative reaction. However, when we are given a medication that helps us to feel better, we typically say that we are responding favorably.

Do you see the difference? We can choose to respond favorably.

When this is all over, people will not only talk about us years from now, they will be talking about us while we are still in it and as soon as it is all over. They will see how we responded and how we handled ourselves during this crisis. Did we stress ourselves out, did we get angry and cranky, did we create bigger problems? Or did we find peace and patience, did we take full advantage of our time together with family, did we do what we could to help others and volunteer? Did we react or did we respond?

We live in a world where we share what is happening in our lives

through social media. Access to information is everywhere. Artificial intelligence picks up on what we look at while we are online. It picks up on trends and then fills our social media feed with more of the same content.

So, if we are reacting and negatively ranting in our own posts, we will continue to see other negativity being posted. However, if we respond by looking at, and “liking” posts of a positive nature, we will continue to see uplifting content filling us with even greater hope and encouragement that we can share and pass along.

The ongoing economic impact of COVID-19

he coronavirus (COVID-19) is in full force. The pandemic has touched the entire world in one way or another. It does not appear that anyone can FINANCIAL escape the threat STRATEGIES of the virus or the economic impact at this point.

There are still many unknowns. It appears inevitable that we are in, or near, an economic contraction as well as significant changes to the way Patricia Kummer we will do business going forward.

Investors stuck at home and faced with 24/7 market news are likely to have a fair amount of anxiety about the condition of their investments and their retirement. While the news has stated many times this is “unprecedented,” I would challenge that every economic downturn has been called the same.

It is amazing that the stock market follows similar patterns of decline and recovery, regardless of the catalyst that caused the volatility in the first place. It is important to keep these macro cycles in mind and focus on the outcome and where you would want to be positioned then.

People often feel the need to do something when a market decline hits.

In reality, staying the course and holding steady may be more difficult than

the urge to do the wrong thing at the wrong time. Investors who work with advisers and have a financial plan to anchor to, will likely fare better than someone inclined to make a kneejerk reaction. The plan provides the guardrails needed to keep you on track.

Your adviser can tell you where you are within those guardrails from both a short- and long-term perspective. You don’t want to make long-term decisions with short-term information. This, in part, is what adds volatility to the markets, only to find you end up in the same place you started.

Stress and uncertainty are the main enemies besides the obvious, COVID-19.

Stress can rob your immune system and uncertainty can lead to imagining extreme situations. I believe the fear of illness and death has added to the uncertainty and volatility beyond a normal correction or bear market.

In the coming weeks and months, there will likely be a lot of press about negative corporate earnings, rising unemployment and, yes, even recession.

This is a good time to remind investors that the stock market is often forward looking. The significant declines in the last few weeks could be the bell weather for expected bad economic news.

The application deadline for the 2020 AARP Community Challenge grant program has been extended until May 15.

In its fourth year, the grant funds “quick-action” projects that spark change across the country, according to a news release. The program is part of AARP’s nationwide work on Livable Communities. Grants can range from several hundred dollars for small, short-term activities to several thousand, or tens of thousands for larger projects.

“We are thrilled to bring this grant opportunity back to Colorado in 2020 and we encourage all eligible organizations to apply,” Bob Murphy, AARP Colorado state director, said in the release. “We’ve seen tangible results from the AARP Community Challenge grant program supporting communities in Colorado as they make quick changes and inspire long-term progress.”

The AARP Community Challenge is open to 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and 501(c) (6) nonprofits and government entities. Other types of organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

AARP will prioritize projects with permanent or temporary solutions that aim to achieve one or more of the fol-

lowing outcomes: * Increase civic engagement with innovative and tangible projects. Anne Laurette Fennell

May 30, 1946 – March 25, 2020 Annie Fennell’s style in life matched the words of a country-western song“humble and kind.” She died at the age of 73 as a result of complications from Alzheimer’s. During her four-year siege and the onset of dementia she endured the loss of a sense of time and place with what family and friends described as “grace and a resilient spirit, always with a smile on her face.”

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James D. “Denny” Fennell of Denver, and three children, Lt. Col. David Fennell (Laura), currently at the Naval War College, Newport, R.I., and grandchildren Abram and Selah, daughter Jodi of California, and son Brian (Michelle) of Denver.

A son, William Carey, died in infancy in 1974. A brother, Tom (Connie) of Springfield, Illinois also survives.

Anne Laurette (“Annie”) Byerly grew up in Springfield, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in education. She followed an older sister to Colorado and began a teaching career. She first taught at Denver’s Franklin Elementary School. A period passed while she was raising her children. She went back to teaching at Littleton’s

Damon Runyon Elementary School, where she applied her gifts of patience and kindness to eager second graders for 16 years before retiring.

In Littleton, where the family resided for almost 40 years, she established a strong network of friends, and belonged to PEO, the Friends of the Library and Friends of the Museum groups, and Town Hall Arts Center, and volunteered at Western Welcome Week. She and Denny are long-time members of Grace Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies of reading and walking kept her busy in retirement. She loved baking Christmas cookies and a tradition was making pumpkin bread for neighbors.

Per Annie’s wishes, a memorial service will be conducted in July at Grace Presbyterian Church. Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery, next to their son William.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, 9720 South US85, Littleton, CO 80125, and the Anne Fennell Memorial Fund. The church will designate the funds for purchase of personal protective apparel for the staff at Children’s Hospital managing coronavirus issues.

Testing not widely available to younger, healthy Coloradans

Nearly a month into the spread of COVID-19 through Colorado, testing for the illness is prioritized for health-care workers, hospitalized patients, and a long list of other vulnerable groups.

At the bottom of the list: most everyday people who end up with symptoms and aren’t seniors.

As testing kits and the protective equipment needed to apply them continue to be scarce, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reminded state residents that at-risk individuals need to be first in line.

“We are working hard to get the supplies and capacity to move to broader public testing, but until then our message remains the same: if you have only mild symptoms, self-isolate and don’t wait for a test,” Scott Bookman, incident commander for the department, said in a March 30 news release.

The state recommends that healthcare providers prioritize testing in this order: • Hospital patients and health-care workers.

• Patients in long-term care facilities or those in other residential settings, such as homeless shelters or prisons.

• Patients over age 65 and patients with underlying health conditions.

• First responders and critical infrastructure workers, such as those

in the energy, water or agriculture sectors.

• People who work with vulnerable populations or in group residential settings.

• Other individuals.

Where testing is happening The state has distributed 4,200 testing kits and protective equipment to local public health agencies in El Paso, Larimer and Mesa counties to test health care workers and first responders, according to the news release. More testing kits will be provided to local public health agencies once those supplies are received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA. Meanwhile, an organization called the Colorado Unified Coordination Group is working on plans that local public health agencies can use to conduct their own community testing sites when more testing kits are available, the release said.

Since March 11, the Colorado National Guard’s mobile testing unit and the state Public Health Department have completed tests on more than 800 people in Denver, Telluride, Pueblo and Salida, the department said in a March 23 release. The department and National Guard sent testing resources to Montrose March 23. The state’s community testing effort first opened in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood March 11.

In the state’s April 2 update, which covered reports through April 1, officials had counted more than 3,700 confirmed or highly likely cases of COVID-19 across 51 counties, with 710 hospitalized, 97 deaths and more than 20,400 people tested. There had been 21 outbreaks at residential and non-hospital health-care facilities. The daily updates can be found online at covid19.colorado.gov/case-data.

Testing now free for many Because of recent federal legislation, people with any kind of private health insurance should have free access to the COVID-19 test — along with any doctor visits associated with getting the test — with no co-pays, deductibles or co-insurance charged, according to Vincent Plymell, assistant commissioner for the Colorado Division of Insurance.

That includes health insurance through employers or the individual market. Coloradans should check with their health-care provider to be sure, though.

For Coloradans with Medicare, all of the costs are covered if a doctor orders a COVID-19 test, according to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

For members of Colorado’s Medicaid program — Health First Colorado — and the Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+), all the costs of testing and the doctors’ visits associated with getting

tested are covered, according to Marc Williams, spokesperson for the state Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.

What about the uninsured?

It’s a bit more nuanced for people with no insurance, state officials say.

States have the option to enroll all uninsured individuals who qualify in Medicaid or the Child Health Plan Plus, including those enrolled in short-term plans and other plans that aren’t considered coverage, according to Plymell. Under Medicaid, the state has applied for assistance from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to help the state pay for testing and doctors’ visits associated with getting the test for uninsured individuals who were not previously eligible for Medicaid, according to Williams.

Those individuals would have their costs entirely covered as well if CMS approves the state’s request, but the state’s application has not yet been accepted or rejected as of April 2, according to Williams.

For uninsured patients, the federal legislation also appropriates $1 billion for the reimbursement of the costs for the COVID-19 testing and the doctor’s visit associated with the test. Healthcare providers must register with the National Disaster Medical System to SEE TESTING, P27

Turn your garden into a thriving success with help from the master gardeners at CSU Extension

n Colorado, there’s a program comprised of 2,500 master gardeners across all 64 counties that develop science-based research and information, making it where you don’t have to spend hours upon hours researching how to develop and be successful at growing a garden.

Through the Colorado State University (CSU) Extension program, certified experts do the research, planting and studies to help you be successful in growing any kind of plant no matter where you live in the state. The master gardeners are available by phone, email and in person (when home-based orders are not in place). These gardeners can diagnose problem soils, identify viruses and insect issues through photos and lab testing.

“When it comes to the Extension program, we like to say why Google it?” said John Murgel, the CSU extension program associate for horticulture in Douglas County. “A Google search provides crazy results that takes you all over the map.

With Extension, you get one-on-one interaction, fact sheets on everything local. It’s an awesome resource.”

All of the master gardeners with the Extension program are certified horticulturist. Through a variety of outlets, including blogs, they provide help to gardeners with watering, planting guidelines, understanding sunlight, Colorado’s crazy weather patterns and explain what the elevation here means to seeds you put into the soil.

Patti O’Neil, horticulturist and urban food systems coordinator for CSU Extension in Jefferson County, said they want gardens to thrive and want residents to know they are here to help at every stage of gardening from planning, planting, growing to tips on how to store food after the harvest.

“One of our biggest fears is that a resident starts a garden without assistance, they fail and never come back to it again,” she said. “We want gardeners to plant vegetables, flowers and everything. We are here to make any garden, whether it’s here on the front range or up in the mountains, succeed.”

O’Neil said when home-based rules are not in

place, the Jefferson County offices can provide inperson diagnosis of plant problems and test soil in the lab. Classes are also offered in most counties.

With soil, we stress that it’s the most important aspect of getting started,” O’Neil said. “You can’t always just dig in some dirt and be successful.

We test soil in labs and can provide guidance on nutrients needed to get you started.”

O’Neil said with 155 master gardeners available in Jefferson County alone, they are always on hand to answer questions, help diagnose and solve problems and provide information.

“Call us with any questions,” O’Neil said. “Don’t be afraid to asks a lot of questions. We want to help with all of it.”

Murgel said when it comes to weather and landscape, Colorado is diverse. The master gardeners with CSU Extension take into account all Colorado landscapes and provide fact sheets on what to plant and when to avoid frost, weather issues or what to consider in regards to altitude.

“We understand that now isn’t a good time to plant tomatoes or squash, you want to wait for the heat,” Murgel said. “But radish doesn’t always do as well when it’s overheated, which means now is the time to plant some of your vegetables. Our websites and master gardeners can provide all of that information that is local to the area residents live.”

The CSU Extension program was established

by Congress in 1914, authorizing land-grant universities to get research-based information out to the public. Besides landscape and gardening the certified experts provide free information in agriculture, 4-H development, animal health, drought conditions, renewable energy, natural resources and food safety and health.

“The CSU Extension’s gardening programs are a great community resource,” he said. “Gardening is an important activity for so many reasons. It connects us to our agricultural history and heritage, and the health benefits are important too. Being outside in the garden helps us both physically and mentally. It also teaches us how to grow our own food. A vegetable garden doesn’t have to be big.

The value of gardening goes beyond what grows in the ground

ardening is a great way to improve the community, beautify a yard or provide great-tasting fruits and vegetables. However, going beyond the roots, gardening has proven to be beneficial both mentally and physically.

Studies continue to show that gardening goes beyond the plants and provides true physical and mental health benefits.

John Murgel, a horticulturist with the Colorado State University Extension program in Douglas County, said for him, gardening provides connection to human history and human life.

“Gardening connects me to the outdoors, to the plants and wild birds and native bees that live in my neighborhood,” he said. “Depending on which plants I’m using at the moment, (gardening) can be everything from childhood memories from family heirloom plants or veggies to people in other ages and in other continents going back centuries or further. They give me deep perspective.”

On the physical side, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says gardening is a great way to get exercise.

Gardening can decrease risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke,

depression, colon cancer and premature death.

Some of the top benefits of gardening include: A natural source of Vitamin D: Vitamin D increases calcium levels, which provides support for bones and the immune system. For older adults, increased Vitamin D can help improve serum levels.

Reducing stress: Gardening has proven to be a calming activity for those suffering from anxiety. Whether gardening alone, or with a group, digging in the dirt, planting, growing and harvesting can help create a calm.

Good exercise: Gardening is a good way to increase physical activity without feeling the pain of a full workout. The CDC recommends being active for at least 2.5 hours a week to strengthen muscles and improve bone health and circulation.

A good after-retirement activity: For many aging adults, retirement can become lonely. Gardening has served as a good hobby and way to engage with neighbors and feel a sense of accomplishment as the garden grows.

Decrease in dementia risk: A variety of studies have found that gardening helps the mind, decreasing the risk of dementia through physical activity.

Creates a healthier diet: By growing your own food, which means vegetables, gardeners tend to have better diets, which improves weight, diabetes risk, and lower blood pressure.

Some golf courses doing brisk business Links stay busy as facilities open after stay-at-home protocol shifts

Golfers have flocked to courses that are open during the COVID-19 pandemic, but many links remain closed.

South Suburban Parks and Recreation, due to Gov. Jared Polis’ stay-at-home order, has closed all playgrounds, golf courses, driving ranges and related golf facilities, tennis/ pickleball courts, basketball courts and picnic areas.

That means there has been no activity at South Suburban Golf Course, Family Sports Golf Course, Lone Tree Golf Club & Hotel, and Littleton Golf and Tennis Club.

“We’re just keeping our golf courses closed for the safety of our community,” said Bill Ramsey who is the manager of golf and head golf professional at the Lone Tree course. “We’re really

looking at the community.

The safety of the community is our number one priority and that’s why we are closed.

“I think all that are closed are municipal and special district golf courses, and the ones that are privately owned and open to the public are the ones that are open right now.”

According to the Colorado Golf Association, among the Denver-area courses that have announced on their websites that they are open to the public after shutting down briefly are Riverdale in Brighton, Green Valley Ranch in Denver, CommonGround in Aurora, The Links Golf Course in Highlands Ranch, Todd Creek in Thornton, The Broadlands in Broomfield, Arrowhead in the Roxborough area, Colorado National in Erie, Raccoon Creek just west of Littleton, University of Denver Golf Club in Highlands Ranch and Plum Creek in Castle Rock.

The CGA reported on its website that late last month about 70 golf courses in Colorado were closed for coronavirus-related reasons. A majority of the public courses that remain closed are municipal or district courses. Both Top-

golf locations in Centennial and Thornton are closed.

“Some courses are open and some are not,” said CGA Executive Director Ed Mate. “The way the policies are written by the regulation agencies has caused the inconsistency.”

He said golfers who are still going to courses are “breaking the containment in a safe way.”

Courses that are open must follow guidelines set by local, district or state health agencies.

Guidelines differ from course to course but most include walking only for a round with no golf carts, removal of flag sticks and bunker rakes, encouraging proper social distancing, payment for golf rounds online in advance, no water jugs on the course, no in-restaurant dining, promoting hand washing and use of hand sanitizer, and no lingering in the clubhouse.

Those courses that are open have been busy.

“We’re booked solid and we have been,” said Kurt Huhn, of Raccoon Creek. “We got our guidelines from the Jefferson County Health people

and we’re following the written guidelines, and the golfers are complying pretty much.

Once in a while they bunch up a little and the marshal jumps on them.

“Most of the time in golf you are 6 feet away from anybody anyway. Playing golf these days is safer than going to the grocery store.”

Matt Goudy, of Plum Creek, has never seen anything like the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’ve been working here for 10 years and it’s pretty unique,” said Goudy. “Golfers understand the social distancing, some follow the governor’s recommendation to wear masks and some don’t, but they are not high-fiving, hugging or touching.

“I would say it is working well and the people are generally pretty happy to get outside. The pace of play is really quite remarkable. If you think about a golf cart, most golfers drive to one ball, drive to the next ball and go hunt the golf ball. When they are alone they just go to their golf ball and hit it. It is an interesting time. You see a lot of people that haven’t walked in a while and they look tired.”

The state announced on April 2 that a special enrollment period for individual health insurance under the Affordable Care Act will be extended to run through April 30, according to a news release. The original period that was announced on March 19 was set to end April 3, the release said.

Mass testing The governor wants to establish the capability for mass COVID-19 testing in Colorado to more accurately quarantine rather than shutting down large sections of society. Such an effort could take weeks or perhaps months to be ready, he has said.

Mike Willis, director of the state Emergency Operations Center, also said the timeline for broader testing isn’t clear at this point.

HOW MEDITATION CALMS THE BODY There are two main branches of the body’s autonomic nervous system, which regulates its unconscious functions, such as digestion and heart rate.

These branches are the sympathetic — the fight-orflight system — and the parasympathetic — the rest and digest system.

“Meditation helps us tap into the parasympathetic nervous system,” said Dr. Justin Ross, a psychologist at UCHealth’s Center for Integrative Medicine. “Think about the sympathetic system being the gas on a car and the parasympathetic system being the brake … you need to learn how to use the brake appropriately.”

By engaging the parasympathetic system, the body’s rhythms become more balanced. The heart rate slows and the sympathetic system no longer pushes stress chemicals — such as adrenaline — into the bloodstream. Meditation also decreases cortisol, the main hormone contributing to long-term stress.

“You’re going to feel a better sense of focus and calm and relaxation,” Ross said.

hen Sean Thompson developed a stress-related ulcer in college in 1988, a psychology professor recommended he try one simple practice to find relief: meditation.

After trying out the professor’s tape of a guided meditation, Thompson made a life-altering discovery.

“What happened was it worked,” he said. “I started feeling more relaxed.”

Twenty-four years later, Thompson founded the Centered Path Buddhist meditation center in Parker. The center, which he describes as more of a study group than a religious organization, teaches folks of all backgrounds how to harness the power of meditation.

“The only people who it can’t help are those who aren’t willing to try,” said Thompson.

Many psychologists, including Dr. Justin Ross at UCHealth’s Center for Integrative Medicine, also recommend the practice to reduce stress.

“There are tens of thousands of published studies on this,” Ross said. “The research at this point is pretty extensive and comprehensive across a wide range of conditions and concerns.”

Mindfulness meditation can reduce stress, anxiety and depression and improve wellness and the ability to cope with disease, he said.

“We talk about meditation as being a core pillar of wellness for all of us,” Ross said.

Especially now, as many people’s mental health is strained by the anxieties and uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, meditation can help everyone find a sense of peace, he said.

“People are trying to function in this new way of being, and that causes anxiety ... for that it would be wonderful to use these techniques to ground yourself every day.”

Dohrmann, Ross and Thompson agree that meditation can be extremely beneficial for those finding themselves frequently worried.

When anxious, “you’re like a bag in a windstorm,” Dohrmann said. “You’re not very rational, you can’t think clearly. Grounding yourself brings you back to (earth).”

Steps to meditation While meditation can be practiced anywhere, it’s best to find a quiet place to sit or lie down, Dohrmann said.

“Ideally you’re sitting comfortably on a cushion or against a wall or in a chair — with feet on the ground, not hanging,” she said. “And then just kind of rest your hands where they feel comfortable.”

“Being body-aware and breath-aware can really be taught even to a 1-year-old,” she said.

For children this age, Dohrmann recommends parents hold the child in front of them and take deep, calming breaths, she said.

“They will mirror that and it will help them calm down,” she said.

With older kids, parents can sit in front of them and hold their hands as they breathe together, she said.

“It helps because attachment and touch calm anxiety,” Dohrmann said. “When in crisis ... they don’t have an adult brain to calm down. They need touch from a steady adult.”

Teenagers tend to do well with guided meditations, which are available through smartphone apps or Youtube videos.

These strategies don’t need to consume much time — they can be as brief as one minute, Dohrmann said.

“Everybody has a minute,” she said.

Once comfortable, the first thing to do is simply become aware of your body, thoughts and breaths.

“The only thing they need to learn how to do is shift their focus to the breath,” Ross said. “Every meditation practice has the foundational component of bringing awareness to the present moment.”

After that, the goal is to identify whenever a distraction comes up.

“It’s about recognizing when you’re not present and learning that you have the ability to bring your awareness back to something occurring right now,” Ross said. “That’s why the breath is so powerful, it can only occur right now.”

Often, beginners will notice their brain coming up with all sorts of distractions.

Have I finished the laundry?

Does the dog need a walk?

What will I make for dinner?

Thoughts and feelings like these are normal and will likely always come up. The hallmark of meditation isn’t halting these, but learning to recognize them and then return to the breath, Ross said.

It can be useful to identify where in the body the breath is most intensely

felt, whether that be in the belly, the nostrils or the chest, Thompson said. He also recommends trying to identify when there is a long or short breath.

“That gets the mind to calm down,” Thompson said.

Dohrmann suggests beginning with a simple technique of inhaling for four seconds, then exhaling for four seconds, repeating the breath pattern for two minutes.

No failure, just awareness Many people say the reason they haven’t tried meditation is because they can’t find the time, Ross said.

“The reality is … it can be as simple as three to five minutes a day,” he said.

It’s best to try to fit in a brief meditation every day, Dohrmann said, “But whenever you can do it is also best.”

Another reason people give for not wanting to try out meditation is because they worry they won’t do it correctly. But Thompson, Ross and Dohrmann agree there really isn’t a downside to trying.

“There really is no failure in meditation, there’s just observation and awareness,” Ross said.

Thompson points out that even if things don’t go according to plan, it still isn’t a failure.

“Worst-case scenario,” Thompson said, “you fall asleep.”

As challenging as it may be to keep up your fitness regimen while stuck in home quarantine, one thing is almost necessary — an internet connection.

As people across the country fondly recall their gyms stocked with rows of elliptical machines, racks of weights and a schedule full of Zumba classes, their trainers are busy uploading content for their clients at home, all designed to help them whip their bodies back into shape — or at least stop them from losing the physical gains they’ve made.

“I guess we are making the best of a bad situation and have kind of pivoted at this point,” said Jon Cerf, owner of fitness chain Core Progression. “We’ve pivoted to running all of our facilities virtually for now and doing the quarantine.”

Cerf operates four Core Progression gyms in the Denver Metro area — in Arvada, Lakewood, Northglenn and downtown Denver — with more planned as franchises are slated to open in Florida, North Carolina, California and Nevada.

All the classes Cerf and his team have run in the past few weeks have been virtual.

“Anybody that was doing our small group offerings, we have livestreams through Zoom and Google Hangouts daily,” he said. “Clients that were doing private or semi-private sessions, we can do Facetime and Skype for a more private kind of workout.”

Body weight is all you need And while his gyms are all stocked with the latest equipment designed to push his customers to their physical limits, Cerf said there’s plenty to do in homes that have no such equipment.

TIPS FOR EXERCISING AT HOME Body weight is king. Standard calisthenics that rely on gravity and body weight are still the best ways to get a workout.

Change the exercises to fit you. If doing a push-up is too hard, trying pushing up from the knees instead of your feet. Too easy? Try to clap in between push-ups.

Get creative. Plumb the depths of the storage closet, the kids’ toy box and the garage for equipment that can be lifted, pulled, pushed or stretched to work out your muscles.

Get outside. As long as walks in the park are acceptable, and keeping physical distance rules in mind, get out and walk.

Some fresh air and the sun can brighten your mood while you get your heart rate up.

Enlist the kids. Roll around with them, wrestle in the back yard, play catch with a ball or a Frisbee. Chuze Fitness trainer Lindsay Gablehouse said she was surprised how much of a workout she got just kicking a soccer ball in the backyard with her sons.

That means lots of push-ups, sit-ups, lunges and squats, but Cerf said there are plenty of ways to vary the routine.

“We never did the same exercise twice in four years,” Cerf said. “And people were surprised. If you have equipment, great. But, as one client and I have joked, your body is heavier than any equipment you’d lift in the gym anyways.”

“Each studio has a different calendar, so if they wanted to work with the people in our Boulder location they can sign up there,” Cerf said. “Or if they don’t know which location, we can pair them with the person that’s the best fit during this time.”

Core Progression’s sessions range from $20 to $50 depending on the number of spaces and the duration of each workout. The private videos go both ways, with coaches watching the people training as much as the people training watch them.

Proper technique is key, he said: “It’s all kinesiology, physics and understanding anatomy and how to put people in the right position to get the most benefit. A lot of what we do is individual, and we like to tailor it to

our clients. It’s not the same as being there in person, but we can offer tips: Drop your hips, rotate left, bring your knee up. You are still getting that personal coaching as opposed to passively watching a workout.”

Lindsay Gablehouse, the fitness manager for the Chuze Fitness location at 120th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, said her company is loading up videos on the internet, too. She runs the team training program and also leads cycling, body pump and yoga classes.

Chuze does not offer one-on-one training with their coaches, either online or at the gym. Instead, they focus on training in a group setting. During normal times, the gym hosts seven training sessions throughout the day beginning at 5 a.m. with room for up to 39 people.

“We had to close off, generally, on March 16,” she said. “That was on Monday, and on Wednesday the 18th we had our first live Chuze class. We had three instructors who went into the gym and did a live session. We had another on the 19th, from one of the instructor’s homes.”

They’ve since adopted a set schedule for content, much of it available for free — even to non-Chuze members.

“We are running seven sessions per day,” she said. “That includes three team training sessions, four group fitness classes — yoga, barre, dance SEE EXERCISE, P40

It’s about time (on their hands) Residents kept at home by health order get creative to fill days

Castle Rock resident Jerry Powell says business owners have a greater responsibility for their community than do the residents who live there.

He says when you open a business, you’re obviously asking the community for support, but you can’t open up shop and expect it to be a one-way street — businesses have to provide something back.

Powell’s Castle Rock Woodworks woodshop gave back to the community when Castle Rock Police K-9 Officer Ronin died in February due to unforeseen health complications. Castle Rock Woodworks provided a handmade wooden plaque to the police department in honor of Ronin shortly after the dog’s death.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Powell has been bunkered at home, helping his three sons through online learning as all school buildings in the state are closed until at least April 30.

As he has been stuck at home like many other Coloradans, Powell has been thinking of hands-on projects he can provide to the community to pass the time through Castle Rock Woodworks.

So far, Powell has provided more than 1,000 free kits to build birdhouses and planter boxes to families, senior homes, nursing facilities and teachers.

“We tried to make it where kids got a hands-on project and parents got a break from (online schooling),” said Powell.

Castle Rock Woodworks made the birdhouse kits educational by providing pamphlets with the kits about Colorado birds, links to educational resources and information about where to place the birdhouses.

Powell said the birdhouses take around 15 minutes to build and can be constructed by using common household supplies such as glue.

To pick up the kits, residents contacted Castle Rock Woodworks through Facebook to get Powell’s address. He set up a table outside his house where the kits could be picked up without coming into contact with him and others.

Castle Rock Woodworks is planning on releasing new projects each week until mid-May, Powell said. The kits are available to everybody throughout the Denver metro area.

“We support all those that are trying to navigate through this weirdness.

We’re in the same boat,” said Powell.

“We will continue to do what we can to contribute until things find a new normal.”

Like Powell’s clientele, others throughout the metro area are finding ways to keep themselves entertained through the pandemic as Coloradans are under a stay-at-home order until at least April 11.

A tight-knit neighborhood In Lakewood’s O’Kane Park Neighborhood, bordered by Alameda Avenue to Sixth Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard to Harlan Street, neighbors are like family.

“I would say our neighbors and neighborhood is unusual. It is the primary circle for us,” said Kelly Theiler, a resident of O’Kane Park Neighborhood. “We take care of each other’s kids, we go out to dinner, we go on vacations with each other. We are the safety net for each other.”

Maintaining a sense of togetherness has been important for eight households in the neighborhood, said Kristy Myers, another resident of O’Kane Park Neighborhood.

The neighborhood has gotten creative with keeping each other entertained through different events like a “no touch scavenger hunt.” Residents went outside, searched for items like a horse, a fire truck and a crow, and they had to take a selfie with a squirrel to complete the hunt.

Each weekend, some neighborhood residents will host a brunch together with different themes while keeping at least six feet distant from each other, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During the weekend of April 4, the brunch was cowboy-themed. Every participant sat outside their porches, drank out of tin cups and dressed like a cowboy.

The neighborhood has also been playing Cards Against Humanity with each other through Zoom, a video communications service.

“It keeps everyone hopeful, and it keeps everyone social so that we can get through these next four weeks and hopefully come out of it okay,” said Myers.

Hanging out virtually Before the pandemic, Denver resident Landan Taylor would typically play disc golf or meet up with his brother after work.

Castle Rock Woodworks wanted to create hands-on projects for children to pass the time during the COVID-19 pandemic. The projects have been provided to families, senior homes, nursing facilities and teachers.

But now that Colorado is under a stay-at-home order, Taylor has turned to another way to entertain himself while still socializing — video games.

Taylor has been playing video games regularly with his friends while talking to them through a microphone.

“As someone who likes to socialize, it is a good way to feel like I am hanging out with people and getting that human experience,” said Taylor.

Denver resident Camila Plana is staying connected with her friends through virtual happy hours on Zoom.

Her virtual happy hours with her friends have included wine tastings and have also entailed her friend group taking turns giving presentations on different topics. One of Plana’s friends gave a presentation on her past relationships. “(The presentations) are more personal, but they are educational too,” said Plana. She said one of her other friends gave a presentation on basic Spanish while another one presented basic American Sign Language.

“It is really important for us to reach out and stay in communication with our friends and family we would normally stay in contact with,” she added.

Eric Nevins, who grew up in Highlands Ranch but now lives in Kansas City, Missouri, said he and his coworkers have been setting up virtual coffee meetings on Monday mornings to try to keep life as normal as possible. Nevins works as a mechanical engineer for Burns & McDonnell, an engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting solutions firm based in Kansas City.

“I’m a pretty face-to-face, socialoriented person. I miss interacting with people a lot,” said Nevins. “As far as getting coffee with those guys, it is nice, because you’re not being professional at work every time. It gives you a time to stay social. That is the most important part — to not feel like I am isolated.”

Breckenridge Brewery is helping to keep medical staff workers fed.

“We know how hard our local health-care heroes are working to care for Coloradans affected by COVID-19, putting in long hours at the hospital, sacrificing their own safety and time with their families,” reads an excerpt from the Farm House Restaurant website. “In an effort to help keep the medical staff workers’ spirits up and bellies full, we are partnering with Feeding the Frontline to provide local hospital workers with meals during this time of crisis.”

Through the partnership with Feeding the Frontline and support from the community, Breckenridge Brewery met its goal of donating 500 meals to hospital workers at Littleton Adventist Hospital.

The success has helped Breckenridge Brewery add Highlands Ranch Hospital and the University of Colorado Anschutz Internal Medicine resident team, operating between University Hospital and Veterans Affairs Medical Center, to its list.

Residents who would like to help can donate a $10 meal from the Farm House Restaurant to local health-care workers. Each month, Breckenridge Brewery will match up to 250 donations to meet its goal of at least 500 meals per month to local hospital workers.

(8) Chatfield Reservoir: Chatfield Reservoir is an existing structure located approximately 8 miles southwest of the City and County of Denver, Colorado on the mainstem of the South Platte River; the right abutment of which is located in Douglas County, Colorado in Section 6 and 7, Township 6 South, Range 68 West, of the 6th Principal Meridian; and the left abutment of which is located in Jefferson County, Colorado in Section 1, Township 6 South, Range 69 West of the 6th Principal Meridian. The portion of the reservoir to be utilized by Denver is approximately 2,716 acres of land inundated by the storage of water adjacent to and upstream from the dam with a capacity of 211,200 acre-feet. Notwithstanding the date of adjudication or filing, exchanges made to Strontia Springs Reservoir and Intake (aka Roxborough Diversion facility) shall be administered under a March 21, 1962 priority date. Pursuant to section III, paragraph 5, and section II, paragraph 8 of the decree in W-8783-77, the July 4, 1921 priority awarded to exchanges to Chatfield Reservoir under CA 3635 shall be administered as having been filed in 1977. Amount: Through the exchange of water, Denver Water from time to time since July 4, 1921 has caused, or may in the future cause, water to be available for diversion at one or several of the points of diversion set forth above. This decree grants the right to divert the amount Denver Water has made available by such an exchange for direct use or storage at any one or all of the points of diversion described, provided that not more than a total of 3,000 cfs may be so diverted at any one time.

To date, 628 cfs has been made available and diverted by such an exchange and as to this amount the decree is final. The balance of this decree, or 2,372 cfs, is conditional. H. Use: All municipal uses, including domestic use, mechanical use, manufacturing use, generation of electric power, power generally, fire protection, use for sewage treatment, street sprinkling, watering of parks, lawns and grounds, the maintaining of adequate storage reserves, irrigation, replacement and the adjustment and regulation of the units of the Denver Municipal Water System within themselves and with other water users, such uses to be repetitive to the fullest extent possible within the limit of physical and economic feasibility as found by Denver, together with the practice of using any of said waters for the purpose of effectuating an exchange or transfer of water by the use of any public stream or its water in substitution for water supplied or taken by Denver, including the right to precedence over others claiming or using a like or similar process, especially as such procedures affect the water of the South Platte River in Water District No. 8 to the extent of the amounts and flows above set-forth. CLAIM FOR FINDING OF REASONABLE DILIGENCE 4. Denver Water, over the last diligence period, has spent at least $57,000,000 on the Denver Water System for which the exchange will be operated. The following work are specific projects that have been completed pertaining to the collection, development, storage, treatment and distribution of waters or water which is the subject of this application. The following items are representative of the total amount of continuing work accomplished by Denver Water pertaining to completion of the entire water system, including the subject conditional water rights and which are necessary to divert and deliver the water which is the subject of this proceeding to an ultimate beneficial use in accordance with the decree: A. South Platte Watershed and General Operations: (1) Denver Water maintains monthly accounting sheets which track availability of reusable water supplies for exchange on a daily basis. (2) In accordance with the October 5, 1995 Stipulation in Consolidated Cases Civil Action Numbers 2782, 5016, and 5017, Denver Water provides the United States Bureau of Reclamation an annual report detailing Denver Water’s diversion, use, return flow, and successive use of Colorado River water during the water year. (3) Pursuant to the decree for 2004CW121 for the quantification of Lawn Irrigation Return Flows (“LIRF”), every two years Denver Water updates the monthly composite Unit Response Functions by sub-basin, the percentage of total Outdoor Water Use by sub-basin, and the LIRF account sheet. (6) In 2018, Leonard Rice Water Engineers, Inc. completed an assessment to identify the Upper Blue River and Upper South Platte River Watersheds Zones of Concern which should be prioritized for wildfire risk reduction. The total project cost was approximately $290,000. (7) In 2019, Denver Water and the United States Geological Survey entered into a joint funding agreement to characterize and quantify sources of phosphorous in the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. The total contribution from Denver Water was approximately $12,000. (8) In 2019, Denver Water and CUSP partnered to conduct an assessment of sedimentation due to wildfires in the North Fork of the South Platte. The total project cost was approximately $14,000. (9) In 2019, SWCA Environmental Consultants provided environmental engineering and science services for a sediment study on Strontia Springs Reservoir.

The total project cost was approximately $76,000. B. Cheesman Reservoir: (1) Denver Water completed annual operations and maintenance, including annual dam safety inspections with the State Engineer’s Office (“SEO”), drill of the Emergency Action Plan, and survey of the dam for movement. (2) In 2014, Sema Construction, Inc. completed demolition and disposal of the existing dam walkway structure. It also furnished and installed a new structure for pedestrian and vehicle use. The total project cost was approximately $830,000. (3) In 2014, Engineering Support Services, Inc. provided construction management inspection services for the Cheesman Dam walkway replacement project for a total cost of $92,000. (4) In 2016, Rock Solid Solutions Corporation completed rockfall mitigation operations at Cheesman Dam, consisting of: rock splitting, scaling of loose materials, and inspection of the rock slope. The total project cost was approximately $20,000. (5) In 2017, HDR Engineering, Inc. provided corrosion engineering services for technical support addressing corrosion failure on stainless steel hydraulic lines serving inlet gates at Cheesman Dam and Reservoir. The total project cost was approximately $12,000. (6) In 2017, McDade Woodcock, Inc. completed an impressed current cathodic protection system to provide corrosion protection to the inlet gates, hydraulic infrastructure, and air bubbler lines at Cheesman Dam. The total project cost was approximately $56,000. (7) In 2017, Lithos Engineering, LLC conducted a detailed inspection of the Cheesman Dam outlet works and produced a report of inspection findings. The total project cost was approximately $11,000. (8) In 2017, Gannett Fleming, Inc. provided engineering services consisting of facilitating a potential failure model analysis for Cheesman Dam. The total project cost was approximately $25,000. (9) In 2017, Harrison Western Construction Corporation completed rock bolting, loose rock scaling, and the installation of a drain system to relieve water pressure from a joint near the Cheesman valve house after a rock fall occurred in 2016.

The total project cost was approximately $240,000. C. Dillon Reservoir: (1) Denver Water completed annual operations and maintenance, including annual dam safety inspections with the SEO and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”), drill of the Emergency Action Plan, and survey of the dam for movement. (2) In 2014, Brierley Associates Corporation conducted a tunnel inspection of Dillon Reservoir. The total project cost was approximately $22,000. (3) In 2014, Aquatic Science LP obtained services for underwater inspections of the inlet structure, trash racks, and horizontal slide gate for the outlet works at Dillon Dam. The total project cost was approximately $81,000. (4) In 2014, GEI Consultants, Inc. conducted a dam stability and deformation analysis at Dillon Dam for a total project cost of approximately $26,000. (5) In 2014, Intrasearch, Inc. provided mapping services for inundation mapping at Dillon Dam. The total project cost was approximately $10,000. (6) In 2014, AECOM Technical Services, Inc. developed a plan to evaluate, and determine necessary upgrades, for the horizontal wheel gate on the intake structure of Dillon Dam. The total project cost was approximately $30,000. (7) In 2015, AECOM Technical Services, Inc. provided engineering services for the FERC Consultant Safety Inspection Report. The total project cost was approximately $57,000. The additional storage space, referred to as the Reallocation Pool, will be used by project participants to meet their diverse water demands. Chatfield Reservoir Reallocation Project, the Army Corps of Engineers determined Chatfield Reservoir can increase the water supply pool up to elevation 5,444’ to accommodate an additional 20,600 acre-feet of water storage for water supply without compromising the flood control operations. The additional storage space, referred to as the Reallocation Pool, will be used by project participants to meet their diverse water demands. The Joint-Use Pump Station would help Denver Water access more of its water stored in Chatfield Reservoir at lower elevations. The Joint-Use Pump Station is currently in the concept phase. In October 2018, Denver Water and the South Metro Water Supply Authority signed an inter-governmental agreement approving funding for a study to evaluate opportunities for joint use of a pump station location below Chatfield Reservoir. The overall approach to the study includes identifying existing and planned future water facilities owned by project participants in the area of Chatfield Reservoir, describing the degree to which these facilities might be available for use by other project participants in a collaborative fashion, and developing a suite of potential infrastructure sharing concepts that have the opportunity to provide benefits to project participants as well as have potential benefits to regional stakeholder that are not project participants. Denver Water is contributing $50,000 out of $258,644 for the completion of the study. (3) In 2015, Denver Water participated in the negotiations and drafting of the Chatfield Reservoir Management Agreement. This Agreement was required under the 1979 Agreement that delegated management responsibility over any reallocation to Denver Water. (4) In 2015, Denver Water participated in the negotiations and drafting of the Emergency Drought Agreement with the State of Colorado. This Agreement defined the parameters for Denver Water’s use of water below elevation 5423’ in the event of a severe and prolonged drought. L. South Reservoir Complex: (1) Completed annual operations and maintenance including annual dam safety inspections with SEO at Miller Dam and survey for movement.

(2) In 2014, Western States Reclamation completed reclamation work on the outer dam embankment of Bambei-Walker Reservoir for approximately $234,000. (3) In 2014, Denver Water and South Adams County Water and Sanitation District entered into an Intergovernmental Agreement (“IGA”) which addressed a wide range of complex issues regarding joint use of downstream reservoirs, including: allocation and repayment of costs, near-term and long-term operations, a water rights peace pact, temporary treated water connections, and conveyance of jointly acquired property interests. Denver Water’s total costs were approximately $6,199,000.

(4) In 2016, Denver Water acquired a permanent easement for access, construction, maintenance, repair, relocation, and replacement of utilities for a total cost of approximately $13,000.

(5) In 2017, the design-build team of Brown and Caldwell and J.R. Filanc Construction Company designed and constructed aeration systems and infrastructure at the South Reservoir Complex to mitigate water quality issues. The total project cost was approximately $1,404,000. M. North Reservoir Complex: (1). Completed annual operations and maintenance including annual dam safety inspections with SEO at Dunes Dam and survey for movement. (2) In 2014, Rodney Hunt Company produced a slide gate for the Hazeltine outlet structure to control the flows from Dunes and Tanabe Reservoirs. The total project cost was approximately $26,000. (3) In 2014, Concrete Works of Colorado, Inc. constructed the outlet for the North Reservoir Complex. The total project cost was approximately $2,085,000.

(4) In 2015, Kumar & Associates performed a geotechnical engineering study and developed a final design for the repair of reservoir bank slopes impounding the Howe-Haller A and B Reservoirs. The total project cost was approximately $70,000. (5) In 2015, Alden Research Laboratory provided hydraulic and structural engineering for the new spillway/rundown structure at Denver Water’s Howe-Haller A Reservoir. The total project cost was approximately $46,000. (6) In 2015, AECOM Technical Services, Inc. provided inundation mapping for Dunes Reservoir for a total project cost of approximately $32,000. (7) In 2015, Envirocon, Inc. completed the installation of 1,840 linear feet of soil bentonite barrier, 140 linear feet of slurry wall structural cap, and site restoration.

The total project cost was approximately $491,000. (8) In 2016, Environmental Logistics completed property fencing around Howe-Haller A, B, and Hazeltine Reservoirs. classes and family workouts — and then a family program or a group meditation.”

She’s especially proud of the family sessions, which offer shorter 20-minute workouts and exercises good for all ages.

“We want them to work for little ones, moms and dads and older people,” Gablehouse said. “All they need is a water bottle and a place to work.”

The bulk have been filmed live by the instructors themselves in their own homes and streamed to Facebook and Instagram.

“Our team training sessions run on Instagram, we run two, one at 1 a.m. and at 1 p.m.,” Gablehouse said. “All of our family workouts are on Facebook.

Our group fitness sessions go back and forth, between the two platforms.”

Viewers don’t have to watch them live. Gablehouse said all of the sessions are archived on the @Chuzefitness IGTV link, instagram.com/chuzefitness/channel. They can find more by searching for #Chuzemovement, where coaches, trainers and members are encouraged to post unique ways to exercise without equipment.

Resistance is necessary “People are saying they miss their dumbbells, or the treadmill. So what can they do?” Gablehouse said.

She said she understands needing equipment upon occasion. She suggests using regular household items,

like bottles of laundry detergent, to add resistance.

“We have to get creative,” she said.

“At this point we’ve all been told to just pick up some soup cans or the laundry detergent, and I think a lot of people just dismiss that idea. But at the end of the day we need something to pick up, something to push, we need something to pull, to rotate and to squat. So I tell people to go into the garage or the kids room and think creatively. We had one person that laid down flat on the ground and did bench presses with a mountain bike.”

David Wagner, general manager at Fit by Hyland Hills at 120th Avenue and Federal Boulevard, is also a fan of household items.

“You can use a jug of water,” he said. “You hold it in front and do a front squat, just holding it in front of your face. Or you can use a chair or a staircase to do a tricep dip.”

Stairs are a good thing, too, and combining them with something heavy makes for a good workout.

Wagner said some equipment is small and inexpensive and easy to get — even in quarantine. He recom-

mends going online to find elastic bands, wide strips of material that provide resistance and make anything, from a leg lift to an arm curl, more difficult.

Chuze’s Gablehouse said there is plenty of room for creativity, even in body weight exercises.

“We might all know the traditional moves, but for each one there are variations they can do to make those traditional moves different,” she said.

“You can do push-ups from the knee, or from the toes. But you can also do them with one leg lifted. Those are not the same moves and the intensity differences you create there are dramatic.”

She found her children’s sled in her garage and gave herself a workout one day pushing it around the backyard.

She said getting outside, whether it’s on neighborhood sidewalks or just in the back yard, is very important.

“With everybody stuck in their homes, we need to play,” she said. “As the house feels smaller and smaller every day, the mental benefit of laughing and getting those natural endorphins running in your body is important. We

need to take a couple breaks everyday to just feel good in our bodies and connect with our families.”

Hyland Hills’ Wagner agrees: Just about any movement is good movement.

“Constantly, constantly move. You want to make sure you get up and get some movement during the day,” Wagner said. “Just walk around your house, go on outside and go in the sun in your front yard. Movement is key.

You do not want to be sedentary, and the more you sit down, the more the quarantine gets in your way.”

That does not have to be limited to time spent working out.

“Do what you can to stay busy around the house,” Wagner said. “Do projects you’d normally be putting off.

Clean out the garage, or something.

There are all kinds of things you can do to keep active.”

Gains in the kitchen Nutrition is another area to focus on while stuck indoors, and Wagner said he subscribes to the saying that muscle gains — or weight loss — are made more in the kitchen than they are in the gym. It helps, because his spouse, Blythe, is the nutritionist for Fit, and she and nutritional pharmacist Ray Hinish have put together a series of podcasts called “Cut the Fat” (cutthefatpodcast.com) that focuses on eating well all the time — not just during a quarantine.

“Eat healthy and keeping your habits as they were,” he said. “You still want to prep your meals like you are going to work. That way you don’t put on too much weight.”
