Renew registration at kiosk Arapahoe County residents can now renew their vehicle registration at a self-service kiosk instead of going to a Department of Motor Vehicles branch.

Arapahoe is the first county in the state to launch Colorado MVExpress kiosks under a pilot program. Fifteen other counties will add the kiosks later this year.

The blue-and-yellow machines look similar to ATM machines and are available at four locations, including Arapahoe County’s Clerk and Recorder branch offices in Centennial, Littleton and Aurora during office hours, 7 a.m.4 p.m. Monday-Friday, as well as the AAA Southglenn Office, open 8:30 a.m.5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday.

To use the kiosk, a resident can scan the barcode on the registration renewal postcard or type in their license plate number. Taxes and fees are paid through cash, check, credit or debit card. The kiosk can print a receipt, registration and license plate tabs on the spot.

Littleton looks at contracting out fire dispatch Possible department merger with South Metro Fire Rescue still on the table

While Littleton Fire Rescue is in the early stages of considering a merger with South Metro Fire Rescue, the department is also looking at contracting its dispatch services to the larger department.

Littleton Chief Chris Armstrong is asking city council to support the contracting proposal, citing a high turnover rate for Littleton’s dispatchers. Armstrong noted that dispatchers perform a stressful job, but the reasons they leave Littleton Fire Rescue seems to be less competitive pay and other perks.

In 2016, six dispatchers, or half of the department’s dispatchers for that year, left Littleton Fire Rescue.

There was a 17 percent turnover in 2015 and 42 percent in 2014. South Metro’s highest turnover rate during those years was 12 percent in 2015.

Mayor Bruce Beckman noted that the department loses value if dispatchers leave soon after they

are trained.

“It’s a very hard business,” he said. “If you get a dispatcher, train them and they’re gone in two years, you don’t get that third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh year of experience.”

Alternatives to contracting with South Metro could include overstaffing to counter high turnover, contracting with another agency, such as Jefferson County’s dispatch center, which handles duties for West Metro Fire Rescue and several other fire and police agencies, or making pay more competitive.

Armstrong told the council at a March 28 study session that Jefferson County’s primarily law enforcement-based dispatch system has compatibility issues for the fire department, and that overstaffing likely wouldn’t solve retention issues.

“We’re struggling to fill existing vacancies,” he said. “So adding more people to hire doesn’t necessarily correct the problem that we’re currently facing.”

A downside to contracting out the dispatch service is a loss of some local control, Armstrong said. He also said that once a department makes such a move, it is hard to turn back.

“Once you start going down this path it is very difficult to turn around,” he said.

Upsides include cost-savings as well as solving the personnel issue.

The department could save $230,000 per year by contracting out the dispatch service, Armstrong said.

Littleton Human Resources Director Erich Won Savage said that South Metro pays its dispatchers more and has an attractive schedule that mimics that of the department’s firefighters.

Dispatchers work 24-hour shifts with a six-hour sleep break. Were Littleton Fire Rescue to adopt this schedule, the dispatch center would need sleep rooms, Won Savage noted, and the department would also incur overtime pay costs.

Matching South Metro’s pay would cost about $3,000 per fire dispatcher annually, Won Savage said.

However, fire dispatchers share a workspace with Littleton Police Department dispatchers, so having a significant pay disparity between the two would lead to more problems, he said.

South Metro starts its dispatchers at a higher rate, while Littleton has a merit-based system, starting employees at about $40,000 in Littleton versus South Metro’s $56,000.

“My recommendation — as your HR director, as a taxpayer — is, if you have an alternate path that is not going to increase your expenses, then I wouldn’t recommend any of these options,” Won Savage said.

Contracting dispatch would not obligate the department to merge with South Metro, Armstrong said.

“One is not dependent on the other,” he said.

Armstrong said that Littleton’s fire partners — Littleton Fire Protection District and Highlands Ranch Metro District — support the move, as well as Cunningham Fire Protection District, which Littleton Fire Rescue currently dispatches for. Cunningham has also been approached by South Metro for a possible departmental merger.

Councilmember Doug Clark remains the most skeptical of the idea on the council, wanting further information on the financial aspects of contracting out the dispatch.

The next step in the process is for Armstrong, acting City Manager Mark Relph and Finance Director Tiffany Hooten to look further at the financial implications and draft an intergovernmental agreement for council to consider.

Arapahoe County struggles with opiate abuse Public health expert says that more care in prescribing can help

Arapahoe County saw 60 overdose deaths from prescription opioid drugs in 2015, up from just 11 in 2010.

During that time, heroin overdose deaths increased from four to 12.

“We certainly are seeing a worrisome epidemic,” said Dr. John Douglas, executive director of Tri-County Health Department.

Overdose deaths are the most concrete way to measure the opioid problem because it is difficult to track drug-caused hospitalizations, Douglas said.

“That’s just the tip of the iceberg,” he said.

Opioid drugs include heroin as well as prescription painkillers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine and fentanyl.

While overdose deaths from prescriptions outnumber those from heroin, the commander of Arapahoe County’s interagency narcotics team said that arrest figures run the opposite way because it is harder to catch someone in illegal possession of a prescription drug.

Lt. Steve Rolen said that 2014 saw about 100 arrests for heroin possession in the team’s territory, which includes

Colorado allows pharmacists to dispense naloxone, a drug used to reverse overdoses of opiates, without a doctor’s prescription, a step that Dr. John Douglas, executive director of Tri-County Health Department, said can be life-saving.

Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputies also began carrying naloxone kits in their cars last September.

Opioid use has been a significant public health concern since the late 1990s, according to a November report released by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The report showed the state’s highest rates of overdoses from 2013-15 were in Pueblo, Adams and Denver counties, with the lowest in Douglas County.

According to a state campaign called Take Meds Seriously, in 2013, 35 Coloradoans died per month from accidental drug overdoses.

Rolen said that people can become addicted after receiving legitimate pre-

scriptions, and when they are longer able to obtain prescriptions they buy pills on the black market or turn to heroin.

“Now they have their addiction, maybe they don’t have the ability to get themselves into addiction counseling or they don’t want to,” he said.

Douglas said some national data suggests that the prescription abuse problem is leveling off, which he attributes to a couple factors: more care in prescribing drugs, and databases to keep people from “shopping” for drugs at emergency departments or clinics. For instance, Colorado’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program provides doctors, physician assistants, veteranarians and other medical professionals with

prescription authority with a database of controlled substance prescriptions issued in the state.

However, a decrease in the supply of prescription opiates can lead to users turning to cheaper heroin as a substitute, he said. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, past misuse of prescription opioids is the strongest risk factor for starting heroin use, with approximately 75 percent of new users reporting past abuse of prescriptions.

One Littleton plastic surgeon has turned to an alternative to cut down on prescribing opioids, instead using Exparel, an injectable anesthetic.

“I like the idea of using numbing as a modality,” Dr. Lisa Hunsicker said.

Douglas said the prescription painkiller boom has its roots in the 1990s, when a controversy arose over pain not being treated adequately.

“The pharmaceutical industry responded by producing some very powerful drugs,” he said.

Littleton Rotary looks to young veterans to join

Like many service organizations, Rotary International is mainly composed of an aging membership.

Rotary Club of Littleton is hoping to engage young veterans, including offering a pair of scholarships to join. Dues for the evening Rotary club run several hundred dollars per year, a cost that can be prohibitive to people in early stages of their careers.

The outreach to veterans is a project conceived by two local Rotary members: World War II veteran

George Mendenhall and Vietnam veteran Terry Foley.

“We’re trying to reach out to the vets,” Foley said. “A lot of them don’t get involved with the community.”

Mendenhall thinks the community service projects that Rotarians undertake can help recent veterans readjust to civilian society.

He compares the group effort of working on Rotary’s various charitable causes to that of fighting the Axis powers in the war. Along with many classmates, he volunteered to join the Army while a first-year student at the University of Denver after America joined the war effort.

“The United States was in a war and we were going to help win it,” he said.

Mendenhall has been a member of Rotary Club of Littleton for decades, and credits the club for much of the good in his life.

“Rotary has meant a lot to me,” he said.

While Rotary Club of Littleton hosted an outreach event for student veterans at Arapahoe Community College on March 28, many of the veterans in attendance had to leave early to go to class. Foley said they will work more with the area’s young veterans in the future.

For Vietnam veteran Abe Alonzo, the March 24 ceremony honoring him and 53 others for their service in an unpopular and devastating war was long overdue.

“We weren’t accepted or received after our tour in Vietnam,” said the 68-year-old Lakewood resident, who served in the Marines from 1968 to 1970. “We were never appreciated for the sacrifices we made. It was a tough time.”

U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-7th District, has partnered with the governor’s office to honor men and women who served during the Vietnam era from Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, the beginning and end of U.S. involvement in the war. The commemoration ceremony is part of an ongoing series of events across the country leading up to the 50th anniversary in 2025 of American withdrawal from the conflict.

Response to Perlmutter’s event, first announced in February, has been so overwhelming that his office expanded the number of ceremonies from one to eight, said Ashley Verville, Perlmutter’s director of communications.

About 600 Vietnam veterans from across the state expressed interest in participating, she said. So seven

more commemoration ceremonies have been scheduled through August, to keep the numbers small and the event more intimate.

The first ceremony took place March 24 at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, to coincide with Vietnam Veterans Day, which is celebrated annually on March 29. Each of the 54 veterans received a lapel pin and a certificate of commendation. The commemoration does not distinguish between veterans who served in-country, in-theater or who were stationed elsewhere during the Vietnam War period.

Vietnam was an unpopular war, said Jim Falk, 68, of Northglenn who served the in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973. And many veterans returned home to disapproval and recrimination, rather than celebration.

“People blamed the service men and women,” Falk said. “But it wasn’t their fault — they were just serving.”

Evan Louis Totten, 75, a Parker resident who served in the Navy from 1964 to 1974, remembers the hostility as well.

“That lingers in the minds of all of us,” he said. “If it had not been for our loved ones at home, we would not have been able to sustain ourselves.”

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates there are 7 million men and women across the country still living who served during the Vietnam era. As of 2014, more than 127,000 are in Colorado.

Whiskey Biscuit offers variety on South Broadway Eatery serves comfort food, beer, liquor in former car dealership

Visitors arriving at Whiskey Biscuit Restaurant and Tavern at 3299 S. Broadway on a recent Friday found college basketball on the three big television screens without sound, as soft background music played so patrons could engage in quiet conversation.

The three friends who own Whiskey Biscuit — Aaron Hatle, Brian Poyner and Alan Courtney — drew on more than 60 years’ combined experience in the restaurant and bar business when they began talking about opening their own place almost three years ago.

“This is the atmosphere we wanted to create,” Cortney said on March 24.

“We opened the doors quietly almost a month ago and the response has been great. We have a lot of people from the neighborhood stopping by to see what we are all about, and a lot of those folks become repeat customers.”

Co-owner Aaron Hatle said he and his partners set out to create a neighborhood gathering place.

“We had all worked in downtown Denver and we decided we wanted to

Broadway spruces up with better lighting and fresh colors Initial work would focus on upgrades in 3400 block

Replacement of the existing electrical system at the base of trees lining the sidewalks and installation of new street lights make up the major portion of the proposed work to spruce up the 3400 block of South Broadway.

Dave Henderson, public works director, presented the proposals to the Englewood City Council during the March 27 study session.

“I am here to talk about specific options for work and the possible financing option so the project improving the 3400 block of South Broadway can move forward,” he said. “We propose

doing the work in phases and the major portion of phase one would be a new system supplying power to outside lighting, such as the holiday lighting.

The current system is 30 years old and subject of constant complaints from businesses. The system is unreliable and power was off more than it was on during the 2016 holiday season.”

The estimated cost of the phase one improvements is $533,000 and the current funding available is about $420,000. The discussion included possible ways to bridge the funding gap, including asking Englewood Urban Renewal Authority to help.

Mayor Joe Jefferson said the proposal would benefit the community and he wants to see it move forward.

“The council gave consensus approval to the proposal,” he said March 30. “Now we need to identify the additional funding, and once that is in

place the work can begin.”

During the March 27 meeting, Henderson said part of phase one would be sprucing up the benches and trash cans. The recommendation is to remove several pieces of furniture at a time and have them powder-coated.

Powder-coating uses an electrical charge so the paint better adheres and protects the metal from the elements.

The new color recommended was gray. But councilmember Rita Russell suggested powder-coating the furniture in bronze. Councilmember Steve Yates noted the furniture is currently Englewood green and he felt that would be a good color choice. The final decision on color will be made at a later meeting.

Phase one also would replace 17 street lights in the 3400 block of South Broadway. Several options were presented and the council consensus

was to install contemporary-style light poles with low-energy, high-output LED lights. It was suggested the fixtures be designed to focus the light on the sidewalks.

There was talk about placing banners on light poles and the possibility of placing signs on the light poles to help people find their way to destinations such as the light rail station or city hall.

Yates said he is excited to see the project move forward.

Mayor Pro Tem Rick Gillit agreed.

“This type of project has been discussed for years. The council wanted to see it done but the funds weren’t available,” he said. “Now we have most of the funding and it should go forward. I think this is something that must be done because it will be a huge benefit to our city and to our businesses.”

Local businesses sought for Englewood school construction Subcontractor business fair scheduled for Clayton and Hay projects

Fransen and Pittman, general contractor for construction of the new Clayton and Charles Hay elementary schools, has scheduled two subcontractor project fairs seeking to enlist local businesses and tradesmen to work on the projects.

“We want as many Englewood people and companies as possible working with these projects,” said Jim Andrews, the company’s vice president of operations. “So we are reaching out to Englewood businesses that would like to be subcontractors on the project.”

Andrews, a 1976 Englewood High School graduate, said projects such as these one could include 30 to 50 subcontractors.

Englewood voters approved in November the $97.5 million bond issue to pay for construction of four elementary schools and an early childhood education center. Phase one is con-

struction of the new Hay and Clayton schools that is set to start in May. Phase two will begin in 2018 and will construct new buildings for the Englewood Early Childhood Education Center as well as for Cherrelyn and Bishop elementary schools.

The first subcontractor fair will be held from 10 a.m. to noon April 8 in the cafeteria at Clayton Elementary School, 4600 S. Fox St. The second fair will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. April 11 in the cafeteria at Charles Hay World School, 3195 S. Lafayette St. Subcontractors and tradesmen attending the fairs will meet with the project team and sign up to prequalify

to work on the project, Andrews said.

“We also will be at the May 18 Englewood Job Fair where we will talk about openings for individual workers,” Andrews said. “We also are looking at ways to get children at the two schools safely involved in the construction of their new school buildings.”

School Superintendent Wendy Rubin said Anderson and his company set up the subcontractor fairs.

“We are very impressed with the company and its desire to enlist subcontractors and workers from Englewood for construction of the new schools at Clayton and Charles Hay,” she said.

“I think Whiskey Biscuit has a great atmosphere and the food is very good,” the Englewood resident said.

“The place has a lot of character and I think this establishment is something the neighborhood really needed.”

His friend Matt Sabin agreed.

“This is a great location and a great place to get together with old friends,” he said. “I like the fact it is quiet enough friends can enjoy quiet conversations. The food is good and the beer is good, so my wife Nicki and I plan to come here often.”

Pat Robinson said he is a regular Whiskey Biscuit customer.

“I know the owners and they gave me a tour while the restaurant was under construction,” he said. “They did a great job here and they have opened a restaurant and tavern that was needed for this neighborhood. The food is good so I come in pretty often. I am a beer drinker so the choices are tough with 24 taps. So I just keep trying a new one every time I come in.”

In keeping with the name, there is a bar at the rear of the location where whiskey and spirits are displayed on a long double shelf along the back wall.

For those who prefer beer there are beverages from 24 taps to choose from.

“We feature the spirits from local distilleries and breweries but not exclusively because there are so many very great spirits and beers available,” Hatle said.

Whiskey Biscuit put a longstanding building to a new use.

The building was built in the late 1940s for the Majestic Motors Chrysler Plymouth dealership that opened about 1949. No exact date is available, but apparently the dealership closed in the late 1960s or early 1970s.

More recently the building was occupied by a hot tub sales company and, when that business moved out, it became a mattress store. It sat empty until the owners of Whiskey Biscuit began completely rebuilding the interior several months ago.

More than 58,000 people lost their lives in Vietnam and about 1,600 people are still missing, Brigadier Gen. John P. Rose told those at the March 24 event.

“The bottom line is that we have not forgotten,” he said. “We will not forget.”

This event, specifically, lets every Vietnam veteran and his or her family know that their service is appreciated, said Jeanette Early of Aurora, a member of Gold Star Wives of America, a support organization for those whose spouses or children have died while serving in the Armed Forces.

“It means so much to say welcome home,” she said.

Because of unforeseen legislative obligations in Washington, Perlmutter was unable to attend the event, his wife Nancy said.

But in an email, Perlmutter said the lapel pins symbolize the service and sacrifice of Vietnam-era veterans.

“I am honored to be able to recognize these veterans and thank them for their service to our country,” he wrote.

For most Vietnam veterans, this commemorative ceremony is a first, said Joe Lucero, 69, a Broomfield resident who served in the Army from 1970 to 1971.

“It is,” he said, “a welcome home that we as Vietnam veterans have been waiting for.”

Q

uiz: Who said, “If you go anywhere, even paradise, you will miss your home”?

I haven’t been to paradise yet, although the Degas room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art comes close.

So does the Inverted Fountain at UCLA. So did the view from the dock that my father and I built in Central Lake, Michigan, when I was viewing it with my father.

I bought my Highlands Ranch home in 1993, when it was under construction.

By then, Packing and Moving was my middle name. I had lived in 11 houses and seven apartments.

There was some good in moving when I was younger, because my accommodations kept

improving.

But moving half a ton of long-playing albums and long-playing books is not a good time.

Neither is driving a rental truck (1975) from Goleta, California, across the desert to Mesa, Arizona, when you don’t really know how to double-shift, and it sounds like it whenever you try.

I arrived in Denver on a Thursday in 1977, had a faculty meeting on Friday, found an apartment on Saturday, moved in on Sunday, and started teaching on Monday.

I couldn’t do that now, and I don’t know how I did it then.

A column in another paper titled “How to say good-bye to a house” started all of this.

I don’t want to say good-bye to my house.

But someday I won’t have a choice, if I can no longer climb the stairs.

The builder didn’t do us any favors.

The ground settled, and so did driveways and porches.

hile traveling with a business partner this past week, we had the opportunity to spend a couple of WINNING days together WORDS as we participated in meetings but also had time to share a few meals and even play a little golf.

And as we were drivMichael Norton ing back to the hotel on the first evening, we started talking about the joys of our jobs but also the hardships or compromises we have made to be away from home so often.

The gentlemen I was traveling with — his name is Mike by the way — began telling me the story of how he was saying goodnight to his family the evening before he was to leave for an early morning flight the next day. And as he was making his rounds and saying his goodnights, he stopped into his teenage son’s room, tapped on the door and said something like, “Hey bud, just wanted to say goodnight and

that I love you. And I will see you on Friday.”

His son leaped out of his bed and said, “Wait dad. Where are you going?” Mike told his son that it would be a quick trip to Atlanta and he would be back in a couple of days. Mike’s son came over to him and hugged him, told him he loved him, and that he would see him in a couple of days.

Now this may seem appropriate and very normal for many of us, and in my heart of hearts I hope that open displays of love and affection are more common for all of you than the rare exception.

But anyone who has raised children through the teenage years understands that sometimes they begin to move from wanting to hold hands and hugging to becoming a little less demonstrative in their love for us. It doesn’t mean that they don’t love us, it is usually just a phase that comes and goes for a few years. And when it comes back, the feeling is just so wonderful and amazing. And as spoken by a parent, me, I also believe that our children love and appreciate the strong

look fine on the outside. I have done the same thing on the inside.

Paintings are all over the place, stacked and leaning. It looks like a storeroom. It’s unconventional, agreeable, and suitable for the likes of me.

If the walls could talk.

There have been girlfriends and drunks and dogs and disagreements and quarrels and BLUM

The quote about paradise was one of Malala Yousafzai’s. She is only 19, but very wise.

This is home, finally, after all of those other addresses. That’s what they were: addresses.

She worked with emotionally disturbed children in residential treatment homes for the first decade of her professional career. As her career in helping children progressed, she worked at Clear Creek County Child Welfare, first as a case-worker and then soon was made supervisor of the team, where her expertise and intuitive sense of people contributed to the development of many social services workers over the ensuing years. Wherever she worked, Sharon was highly respected as a dedicated and committed professional. She took her job – her mission – seriously and has helped thousands of families in her career, saved the lives of children in harm’s way, and taken each one into her heart in a personal way.

What a loss to the families and children in her county!

Sharon was involved in her community as a volunteer, both with the Clear Creek County Santa Shop and with Special Olympics. She gave of her time and energy generously and was appreciated by other volunteers and the beneficiaries of her work.

Sharon was a funny, smart, generous and caring woman and was loved by a large circle of friends and family but had not found a life partner when she decided to wait no longer to become a mother. She adopted her beautiful daughter Libby in 2001. Sharon knew of Libby through her work as a social worker, knew that this baby had genetic brain abnormalities that were sure to present challenges to her development, and courageously decided this was the child for her. Sharon’s family and friends have all watched Sharon give her whole heart to a child whom doctors told her would probably never walk or talk or feed herself, filling Libby up with love and self-esteem. She is a strong and sassy girl who thrived on her mother’s love and surpassed everyone’s expectations. Sharon has seen her as

whole and perfect from the beginning.

Sharon was a single working mother for a few years before meeting her soulmate, Leslie Lee. She looked for love for a long time, gave it freely and then finally found a wonderful partner in Leslie, who obviously saw and treasured the rare and precious Sharon. Leslie soon shared Sharon’s love for Libby and adopted her in 2012. This family has always seen life as a joyful gift and have really known how to have fun. Sharon’s laugh would ring out like a bell, her face full of light when her sense of humor was tickled. Her incisive and dry wit made hearing her and Leslie’s back and forth like listening to a top quality stand-up comedy act.

Sharon and Leslie married in a celebration full of light and energy on the 18th of July, 2015.

Sharon has left a big hole in the world and in the lives of her family and friends – Her spouse, Leslie Blum and daughter, Libby; her mother, Julianne Griswold, her father and step-mother Henry and Donna Blum; her sisters and brothers-in-law Diane and Ken Mandile, Carol Blum and Jim Miller, and Barbara and Ed Biegel and her brothers and sister-in-law Steve and Lorri Blum and Jim Blum; her nieces and nephews William, Olivia and Ben Mandile, Mariana and Caitlin Miller, Nick, Eddie and Joey Biegel, David (and Audra), Mark (and Alexis), Jonathan, Bekah, Angie and Julie Blum; and her aunt Christine Char and cousins Jenn and Mishka Char, Cathy (and Judd) Heape, Paula Sanchez and Jennifer Hendler; her friends, colleagues, and clients.

Sharon has always been an angel - not a quiet, delicate one with white feathery wings – but salty, powerful, loud and joyful. You’ve never had to wonder what she thinks or believes, and you also haven’t had to agree with her to have her respect. She has always been a strong but calm voice in speaking up for what she believes in, not allowing herself to be silenced and also not stifling others who disagree with her. She always had a classy style, from her salt and pepper curls to the tattoo on her ankle that she got before it became such a craze, to her beautiful blue eyes full of mirth and compassion and wisdom all rolled into one. When she loves you, you really feel loved and held. Your heart is safe in her hands. Love continues past the boundaries of time and breath, hers for us and all of ours for her.

A memorial service will be held at the United Center in Idaho Springs, Colorado, at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 29th and all are welcome.

Sharon Louise Blum

Dec. 20, 1960 – Feb. 3, 2017

Sharon Louise Blum was born on December 20th, 1960, lived fully and touched countless other souls, and then departed on February 3rd, 2017, suddenly and far too early. She was the third of six children of Henry and Julie, and grew up in Littleton, Colorado. She went to St. Mary’s Catholic school through 8th grade and then Heritage High School, from which she graduated in 1979. She attended Colorado State University, graduating in 1983 e with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies.

Sharon worked for her father in two small family businesses during college and briefly afterwards before starting her career in the service of children and families.

Wayne Edgar Peck Dec. 22, 1933 - Mar. 5 2017

Wayne Edgar Peck, of Littleton, Colorado and recently of Pleasant Prairie, WI, passed away peacefully on Sunday March 5, 2017 at the Addison Assisted Living Facility in Pleasant Prairie, with his beloved wife Peggy and family by his side.

Born December 22, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of Clifton and Estella Peck of Trenton, Michigan. On March 11, 1955 he married Peggy M McCormick in Baltimore, Maryland.

Wayne had an exciting career as an aerospace engineer for Martin (Lockheed) Marietta in Colorado for over 30 years. Most importantly Wayne will be remembered as being a good father who taught his children the value of being kind, honest, trustworthy, reliable and modest. Our childhood memories of camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountains and appreciating the natural world are forever cherished and have been passed along to his grandchildren. Wayne loved Colorado and the American southwest and spent

many happy retirement years RVing with Peggy by his side.

In addition to his wife Peggy of almost 62 years, Wayne is survived by his children Kathleen (Peck) Field of Pleasant Prairie, Karen (Peck) Edelen of Bellingham, Washington and Steven Peck of Kent, England.

He is further survived by his grandchildren Shane Edelen, Amanda Field, Michael Field and Luciana Peck.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Sterling Clifton Peck.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the wonderful caregivers at the Addison Assisted Living Facility and Hospice Alliance, for the compassionate care they provided.

Raoul (Mac) K. McCoy Oct. 7, 1933 – Mar. 8, 2017

Raoul (Mac) K. McCoy, 83, of Goodyear, AZ died on March 8, 2017 in Goodyear, AZ. He was born October 7, 1933 in Urbana, Iowa to Floyd and Lottie McCoy. He served in the US Air Force from 1952 to 1956.

Mac was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother.

He worked and raised his family in Littleton, CO. When he retired from banking after 25 years he and his wife moved to Arizona. He was a proud American, a natural born leader and a man of in-

tegrity. We will all miss his sense of humor and that special sparkle in his eye.

Mac is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eileen McCoy; son Mike McCoy (Annette) of Centennial, CO; daughters Jeni Fleck (Bob) of Houston,

TX, Jodi VanBeurden of Fresno, CA, Kristi McCoy of Goodyear, AZ; and 8 grandsons of whom he was extremely proud. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Lottie McCoy, sister Melvena Richter, and Cleo Belle McCoy (infancy).

The look on Mike’s face and tone in his voice told me how much he sincerely appreciated the hug his son had given him that night.

And I have known Mike for several years, so I was very happy for him and enjoyed the story as if I was remembering the hugs from my own children the days when I would have to travel when they were younger.

from their customers before collecting certain categories of information.

Under the current rule personal information such as your web browsing history, geographic location, children’s information, social security numbers along with financial information and app usage history — all which fall under the “sensitive data” bracket — can be collected by your internet provider without your permission. A second category of information, called “less-sensitive data,” such as your name, address, IP address and anything else a consumer has not

opted in to sharing with their ISP’s will now be subject to collection, since consumers won’t have an option to opt out of this information sharing.

This is a controversial subject for many reasons and for years the debate has gone on as to what ISP’s can and cannot do with this information. The ISP have argued that they should have the flexibility to collect this data because some of their competitors such as Google and Facebook, which are not ISPs, can collect this data and use it and sell it now.

It is my view that your internet activities are private. We live in a world that is ever more interconnected and I think that users should have the power to decide which information they want to share and which they

don’t. Just as you wouldn’t give a stranger your home address and financial information willingly, your ISP should not be able to obtain that same information without even asking.

This issue has the potential to go even beyond privacy rights, but also to include national security concerns since we will no longer control where our data ends up — or worse, who is buying or reviewing it. I understand the ISPs point that some of their competitors currently have obtained an advantage because they can obtain and use this data but I think the correct solution is not to empower the ISPs to gather and use this data but to impose the same privacy concerns and requirements upon these other internet based enterprises.

I believe the privacy of my constituents, and of other internet users, is an issue where the government needs to tread very carefully. I do not believe we should permit private corporations to take advantage of our information for their use and profit without your knowledge and consent. The right to privacy is embedded in the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and as a person who honors our founding principles, my vote on this resolution represents my reaffirmation in our Constitutional protections.

Find the answers to life’s stress tests Stress is normal.

It’s how you handle it that’s important

Barker, 32, worked for an engineering firm for four years after graduating from the Colorado School of Mines, but realized he wasn’t leading a healthy lifestyle — this prompted him to become a massage therapist, and he opened Reworks Massage (and Tech) on 16th Street Mall last fall.

fter Cori Barker earned his degree from the Colorado School of Mines, he landed a job with an engineering firm.

He enjoyed the job, but the work was stressful, often finding it difficult to meet a client’s expectations. And his off time was filled with monotonous routine — a PB&J sandwich for a quick dinner, and some TV or video games to unwind a bit before bed.

Barker lived this way for four years — poor diet, lack of sleep and little exercise. Admittedly, he did not allow time for self-care.

“I didn’t have the maturity to value my personal health,” Barker, 32, said.

“But I couldn’t imagine a different lifestyle.”

The one thing he did do for himself, both as a student and engineering professional, was get a massage about once a year to help relax. And this is what led him to the path he is on today — a massage therapist living a content and mindful lifestyle.

Having some degree of stress is normal — and not all stress is bad, health experts agree. But too much stress can lead to common illnesses because of a compromised immune system or more serious diagnoses of anxiety or depression.

“Stressors can really knock us out of our normal routine,” said Tripti Sharma, a therapist who teaches a mental health first aid class at Community Reach Center, a nonprofit that provides mental health care and other health services at multiple sites throughout Adams County. “How you handle it is what’s important.”

Shannon Gwash, director of wellness programs and services for Jefferson Center for Mental Health, says the term “eustress” refers to what mental health experts consider positive, healthy stress. It can be thought of as a motivator because that kind of stress keeps people working toward a goal or pushes a person to excel.

Distress — the stress associated with being stressed out — is when life starts to become too overwhelming, Gwash said.

There is no definitive threshold between the two, Gwash said, because people have different triggers that can cause distress. However, to distinguish between the two, Gwash suggests asking this question: Are you progressing toward that goal, or are you falling behind because you’re taking on too much?

“It’s hard to take a step back,” Gwash said, “but it’s necessary.”

For most people, the best way to handle stress, Gwash said, is to recognize and acknowledge when you’re taking on too much.

“Everyone gets stressed out, but it’s not always because of the same things,” she said. “Be aware of what works for you. Sometimes, too busy is not good. It’s good for us to have downtime, and it’s good for us to have those healthy boundaries.”

MORE TIPS TO MANAGE STRESS Here are a few more tips to manage stress: • Stay connected to your social network. Allot time to spend with friends and loved ones.

• Ask for help when life becomes overwhelming. Seek advice from clinicians or others you trust.

• Maintain a positive outlook. Don’t get caught up by the negative effects of something that didn’t go exactly as planned.

• Help another person manage his stress.

• Make time to enjoy favorite leisure activi-

ties. Join a class or program offered through community resources, such as the library or rec center.

• Go outside — being outside allows a person to take in nature’s smells and calming sounds.

• Break things down into smaller, more manageable steps.

O’Gleby flew out to Denver for auditions, in addition to attending New York auditions. “There are a lot of moving parts.”

We spoke on the afternoon of March 16, first day of rehearsal. Rattan said the cast had seen a design presentation, heard about historic context, viewed a set model and costume concepts. “With a musical, everyone has to learn (the music) … The first day is devoted to music learning.”

In 2014, Rattan and O’Gleby visited Argentina and found that Eva Peron’s presence and legacy are still prevalent.

“Eva and Juan Peron are credited with giving a voice to the working class — in hospitals, labor unions, orphanages.”

“Evita” is one of Rattan’s favorite shows. “The complicated protagonist is female … she’s not oversimplified, she presents a real person,” Rattan said. “It’s a very political show, but it doesn’t play out like a history lesson.

All the characters are so passionate and involved in the politics of the show. And that’s not exaggerated — the people of Argentina are really like that!

“We hired the musicians here,” she said, adding that the lead singer, local actor Laura Shealy, is an accomplished vocalist. New York actors will play the male leads: Miles Jacoby (Che) and Jesse Sharp (Juan Peron).

“Divisions,” is a new production by Wonderbound contemporary ballet company and nationally known hiphop band the Flobots — both involved in community activism through the arts. It will play in three metro Denver venues between April 14 and 30.

Choreographer Garrett Ammons and his wife, Dawn Fay, began with the company in Denver in 2007, then called Ballet Nouveau, now called Wonderbound. They have made a practice of collaborating with other artists.

“With our country more divided than ever, it’s important to come together through art,” Wonderbound says. “This production is inspired by how art has impacted great revolutions in history and costuming will be based on clothing worn by revolutionaries through time.”

Ammons, known for his ability to work with other artistic groups, including Paper Bird, poet Michael J. Henry, illusionist Professor Phelyx, DeVotchka’s Tom Haggerty and musician Ian Cooke, has teamed this year with Flobots lead singer Jamie “Jonny 5” Laurie and the band, as they were also completing a new album following several years of effort.

“Our job is all the more important as social conflict increases,” said Ammons.

The new Flobots album, “NOEN-

EMIES,” is due on May 5 and the dance portion of the production was created from the new music. The album includes the voices of a gospel choir and intends to give listeners a sense of hope. “We hope `Divisions’ is a thoughtful and compelling look into the soul of a nation stirring with unresolved questions — What are we mobilizing for? Who are we mobilizing against? Why are we scared of each other? As more and more people take to the streets, these questions are more vital now than ever,” Laurie said.

The socially active band started Youth on Record, which, with help from working musicians, trains at-risk students to develop career skills while staying in school. They work from a new studio located in the Mariposa community in Denver, with support from the Boettcher Foundation.

In order to clean residue and sediments from the mains, the Water Distribution crews will be isolating sections of pipe by shutting off the valves to connecting pipes, then opening the fire hydrant on the main to full volume. The resulting surge of water flushes mineral accumulations from the pipe.

As the rushing water forces the minerals from the mains, it may force small amounts into the connecting service lines. Residents should be aware, therefore, that one or more days during the week of April 17th they may experience a flow of brown water from their taps. They should then turn on their cold water only until the taps are flowing clear.

Big things going on in world of theater around metro area Plays in Denver, Arvada, Aurora are all rewarding shows for attendees

Denver’s metro area theater choices are better than ever, it would seem, as spring arrives on the scene. Three strong possibilities for April …

• “Constellations” “Constellations,” by recently recognized British playwright Nick Payne, is probably the finest production I’ve seen in several years — don’t miss it — at the adventurous Curious Theatre.

When you read that this two-character drama is about a pair of geeks: a beekeeper, Roland, and a Cambridge University academic, Marianne, whose interest is in “theoretical early universe cosmology,” you tend to think “oh dear,” if your interest is in the arts!

They meet at a community barbecue and chemistry develops.

But this version of the boy-meetsgirl story hops between universes, with related, but unlike, conversations between a pair of likeable, but socially awkward, people. Actors Brett Aune (Roland) and Kelsey Didion (Marianne) move about, performing vignettes on multi-level wooden platforms, with each move signaling a shift in universe.

Actors pick up on a previous conversation and take it in a whole other direction — or they may introduce a new topic and carry it through several multiverses.

Director Christy Montour-Larson has put together a complex, brilliant piece of theater.

The program offers a clearly stated layman’s definition of String Theory, which drives the plot, but really, it’s not needed to stay engaged with this compelling story — and probably to associate parts with one’s own experiences.

• “Jesus Christ Superstar” At Easter season, “Jesus Christ Superstar,” by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is an appropriate choice and Arvada Center offers a well-staged production, with strong voices, for this sung-through rock opera version of a story we all know. It was originally staged in 1971 and has had recent revivals on Broadway and in London, which tied up rights for several years, according to director Rod A. Lansberry, who has wanted to produce it.

As directed by Lansberry, the large cast moves deftly through a multileveled, red rock desert Garden of Gethsemane, with changes in lighting and music that carry the dramatic story of Jesus Christ’s last seven days to the inevitable conclusion.

Costumes are mostly historically accurate, with subdued color, which makes it difficult to sort out who is who, but provides an earthy background along with the set.

Billy Lewis Jr. debuts at Arvada as Jesus and Matt LaFontaine, a frequent Arvada performer, also well-known at Town Hall in Littleton, gives a remarkable performance as the conflicted Judas, after taking over the role just a few days before opening. Jenna Bainbridge, who came to local theaters from Douglas County High School some years ago and has starred in Phamaly Theatre productions and elsewhere, brings her lovely voice to the role of Mary Magdalene.

• “Chinglish” As the audience takes seats at the Aurora Fox, an entertaining series of signs in Chinese and English greets then onstage. The translations are photographs of actual signs playwright David Henry Hwang noticed on a number of trips to China. Example: “Men’s handicapped restroom — Toilet for deformed men.”

At a lecture for the Ohio Commerce League, we hear Daniel Cavenaugh (veteran actor Mark Rubald) explaining how he plans to score a big sale in China. Ohio sign manufacturer Cavenaugh arrives in a provincial Chinese city, hoping to sell a series of correctly translated signs for a new arts center. He meets his translator Peter Timms (Tim O’Connell), an experienced, but less than honest China hand, who advises him on how to approach the Cultural Minister Cai Guoliang (Ke Zang). Business in China takes byzantine paths to conclusions and one needs to understand the culture, he says.

The naive Midwesterner gives his pitch to the minister, hilariously translated by Qian (Peter Trinh) and negatively received by the attractive assistant to the minister, Xi Yan (Christa Yan). Several storylines follow as Daniel threads his way through conflicting ideals and ideas, while developing an increasing attraction to the Cultural Minister’s assistant. She has her own agenda, which is eventually explained and a trial happens.

The reason for the advice “always bring your own translator” becomes apparent as the complex plot proceeds. The acting is good and the script holds delightful humor and considerable insight.

Theater company that coalesced last year stages play in Denver IF YOU GO

A couple of years ago, skilled actors — and good friends — Haley Johnson and Rachel Bouchard “wanted to do a project together,” they said as we sat down before rehearsal time to chat.

What? They thought of producing, writing a play together and developing a company, which won out. It is named Benchmark Theatre, and its play “The Nether” is now running at Denver’s Buntport Theater. (Benchmark is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a way to judge the quality or level against other similar things.” Also a surveyor’s mark, cut into a wall, a

The pair spent a year planning before announcing last July, with an Aug. 1 open house at Redline Gallery, that Benchmark Theatre Company was joining the Denver area’s active theatre community. The company has a youth partner at Redline.

In response to the Orlando nightclub shooting, the new company became involved in an eight-company effort at Vintage theatre that raised over $2,000 for the Human Rights Campaign.

Groundwork first: “I spent more time with corporate governance than artistic (considerations),” said Bouchard, who is director of the company’s first production, “The Nether,” which opened March 31 at Buntport Theater. Johnson plays a detective in the cast.

Next project will be a new science fiction play festival, “Fever Dream,” in June, with all new works and lots of intellectual discussion, also at

Buntport. They hope to attract people who participate in events such as Comic Con, Johnson said.

They are reading through 300 submissions for the festival, which will run over a weekend.

The play is for mature audiences, the pair cautions about the recent work by Jennifer Haley. It presents a “virtual wonderland that provides total sensory immersion; just log in and indulge your every desire. But a young detective discovers a disturbing brand of entertainment and triggers an investigation into the darkest corners of the imagination.”

A serpentine crime drama as well as a haunting sci-fi thriller …

The position of catcher is not easy on the body.

Players take their lumps with foul tips, flung bats and plays at home plate with a base runner charging toward them. And, of course, there’s the squatting catchers must do, keeping their knees bent with torso low to the ground to receive pitches.

But sometimes, the hardest part of being a catcher has nothing to do with blocking a ball in the dirt, throwing out a runner trying to steal a base or catching a foul ball.

It’s the mental side of the game.

Catchers have to be leaders — and sometimes, psychologists for their teammates on the mound.

“The toughest thing about catching is the pitchers,” Lakewood senior catcher Casey O’Neill said.

“Everyone is different and you have to handle each one differently. Oh, for sure, you have to be a psychologist.

“Some guys, you have to go out there and tell them jokes, some guys you have to tell them they’re all right, and some guys you have to go out there and tell them straight that they are (playing poorly).”

Mountain Vista coach Ron Quintana, a former catcher, said catchers need to be intelligent and able to immerse themselves in the game.

“For any catcher, whether it’s high school or college, you are always looking for someone who is

going to be a leader, very vocal,” he said. “So you are looking for someone who can make good choices and good decisions.”

Heritage senior Casey Opitz, who has signed to play at the University of Arkansas, is one of the area’s top catchers. But even he says controlling what others do on the diamond is often difficult.

“You pretty much have to know where everybody has to go before they do,” he said. “That’s the hardest part. When it gets to the seventh inning, runner on third, blocking the ball is just instinct stuff, stuff you work on. But the mental stuff is probably the hardest part.”

oys volleyball, currently a club sport, is set to serve up another attempt to the Colorado High School Activities Association to sanction the sport.

The CHSAA Equity Committee didn’t endorse sanctioning boys volleyball during its JanuOVERTIME ary meeting, but the Colorado Boys High School Volleyball Association will make another bid to become a sanctioned sport at the April 20 Legislative Council meeting.

One of the fears of adding another boys sport is that schools could become Jim Benton out of compliance with Title IX. The federal law passed in 1972 mandates equal opportunities for sports participation for male and female athletes.

“This is the third time it’s been up for vote and of all the times before I believe this has the best chance,” CBHSVA president Mike Prusinowski said. “It all comes down to the Legislative Council vote. If the Equity Committee would have said yes, I would have been extremely sure we would have the votes. Now, I am hopeful for them.”

The Equity Committee ruling is a barricade but not a full veto. CHSAA bylaws require the Legislative Council to weight the Equity Committee’s recommendation in their decision-making process.

In a CHSAA survey last November, 258 schools responded and 93 — or 36 percent — said they would start a boys volleyball team. Another 107 schools support sanctioning boys volleyball, though they wouldn’t initially field a team.

Overall, about 55 percent of schools said they could add boys volleyball and maintain compliance with Title IX. “It’s not an equity issue and they can’t make it one because 143 schools have said they could maintain compliance,” said CBHSVA board member Scott Siegfried, a representative for Cherry Creek. “The next question CHSAA asks is do we have officials? The president of the officials association of Colorado said we have plenty of officials. Then it becomes a money issue, and the fact the gyms, the nets, the balls already exist… I’ve been working hard to reach the $40,000 mark that I will donate to CHSAA through private donors. So, in essence, the first season could be free.

“We have a good case. I think I’ve answered every question single question anybody would ask so I feel good about that but this is a democratic process, people can vote and that will be what it is.”

There are 50 club teams this season in the CBHSVA, with 600 participants playing in 3A and 5A. The clubs are co-op teams, with players coming from around the school districts. For instance, Cherry Creek has five teams, two 5A and three 3A, with players coming from all district schools.

Then when he comes up the second time, he’ll kind of be guessing a little bit because of what he saw the first at-bat, then you have to throw the opposite of what he’s thinking.”

Westminster’s Miguel Palos, one of the top catchers in the East Metro League, said it’s important to be able to calm a pitcher down and tell him to throw strikes.

That just comes with the terrain behind home plate.

“You are part of the whole game,” Palos said. “You’re the leader of the whole game.”

The ultimate impact of a top-notch catcher can often be seen in a pitcher’s statistics, Heritage coach Scott Hormann said.

“A great catcher,” he said, “makes a mediocre pitcher great.”

Arapahoe County offers youth programs Arapahoe County 4-H is offering two unique programs this summer — Mountain to Metro and Urban Ranchers Day Camp.

Mountain to Metro camp is a two-night, three-day adventure from June 27-29 through the Denver metro area and the mountains of Clear Creek County.

It is open to youth ages 10-12. Cost is $75; register

by June 12. Scholarships are available.

Urban Ranchers Day Camp is a program that pairs community youth

with 4-H members to learn how to care for and show a goat. Other animals are also featured throughout the week. The camp concludes with an animal show and cookout where youth get to show their new skills to family and friends.

Recent trends in medicine have tried to reel in the problem, with strong painkillers being used as a last resort for acute conditions.

Surgeons are placed in a difficult position of trying to keep people comfortable following procedures, Hunsicker said.

“We as a society — we don’t know how to be in pain,” she said.

Doctors can help curb opioid abuse by not issuing large prescriptions, Douglas said.

“Personally, I just had a surgical procedure and got a big enough prescription to kill an elephant,” he said.

But those large prescriptions are an unintended consequence of federal regulation prohibiting electronic refilling of opioid prescriptions. While the regulation was meant to prevent prescription fraud, it has led to doctors issuing large prescriptions initially to avoid

the hassle of refilling them.

Douglas noted that wellknown surgeon and public health researcher Atul Gawande has recently argued for adopting electronic prescriptions for opiates.

Encouraging more doctors to check databases to spot drug shoppers is also key, Douglas said, as well as helping people dispose of unneeded medications and helping to treat people who are facing addiction.

“An opioid prescription may not be your best friend,” Douglas said.

‘The homeless person ... on the street is a person just like you’ Mean Streets offers hope, comfort and resources to homeless families in Jeffco

The hotels and motels along West Colfax Avenue have never been just a place to stop during the night for travelers. They also — for years — have served as temporary roofs for homeless people who can afford staying a night or two.

Wheat Ridge resident Lindsay Bledsoe, 29, knows this firsthand, from her own experiences growing up. And it was at one of these hotels that she first came into contact with Mean Street Ministry.

“I was a teenager at the time, staying in one these hotels, and Mean Street volunteers came by our door with food and offering to pray with us,” she remembered. “We gladly accepted, and even had a Christmas dinner with them.”

Years later, with a family of her own, Bledsoe decided it was time to teach her children the value of appreciating what they have. So she got back in touch with the organization — this time to volunteer.

“Seeing this humbled everyone, and I think I needed it as much as my kids did,” she said. “Now that I volunteer with the ministry, there are times when I open the door on a situation very similar to what mine was.”

Bledsoe is one of hundreds of people who have had their lives changed by the work of Mean Street, founded by the Rev. James Fry and headquartered in Lakewood. The Christian nonprofit works to help homeless families, particularly in the west Jefferson County area, leave the streets for a stable place to live and reliable employment.

“I was volunteering at area food banks and saw people who were just so broken,” Fry explained. “I started buying food in bulk and going to local motels where homeless families were staying, and that was 15 years ago.”

In the years since its creation, Mean Street has grown to include providing resource guides to families in need, and a cafe, food bank and cold weather shelter, all at 1380 Ammons St. in a building it shares with the Denver Street School, which serves at-risk youth by giving them a second chance to earn their high school diploma.

Mean Street also has key working relationships with the county and has formed partnerships with area cities and police departments.

“Our paths intersect with them and the work they do from time to time,” said Randy McNitt, a sergeant with the Lakewood Police Department.

“One of the biggest ways we interact with them is as a cold weather shelter they host during bad weather.”

The school is the county’s designated cold weather shelter for families, and area police know to use Mean Street as a resource for those in need from October to April. The shelter is open to families when it becomes

Mean Street Ministries is run out of the basement of the Denver Street School, where it provides a food pantry, resources and a place to sleep during cold nights. dangerous for people to spend the night outside — usually when it is about 32 degrees with precipitation or 20 degrees or colder and dry.

“We work with Jeffco on the shelter, and we are often bursting at the seams,” Fry said. “Denver is becoming too dangerous for a lot of families, so we’re seeing more of these families being pushed out into the suburbs area.”

Young families are the fastestgrowing segment of homeless in the metro area, Fry said, with the high prices of living in Denver and the lack of affordable housing options in Jeffco being some of the top reasons.

In March, Mean Street tried a pilot program, where the overnight shelter in the gym was open every evening, regardless of weather, to about 10 families a night. The number of families who attend every night varies, but what stays the same is the routine — families arrive and set up their tents, eat and go to bed.

“It can cost someone between $75 to $100 a night for one of those motels on Colfax,” said Suzanne Wilson, a volunteer and president of Mean Street’s board. “Not having to worry about where their kids are going to be resting their heads helps.”

The program’s goal is to save up money for more permanent housing.

Added benefits include having a safe place to shower and sleep. Families arrive between 6 and 7 p.m., are given dinner and a shower, and sent up tents in the gym. There is breakfast early in the morning — they have to be out by 7 a.m.

“Everybody has a chore to help run the shelter,” Wilson said. “The kids really like it — they’re camping inside.

Most kids beg to camp inside.”

There is a friendly atmosphere as everyone prepares for the evening, with people talking about their days and visiting with the volunteers.

Jefferson County has always been a place where homeless people stay for

a while, according to Fry, but “single homeless” know how to stay off the radar and go unnoticed. For families with children and a job, this is not so easy.

“Shelters are packed with people who have jobs, but the cost of living is just so high,” he said. “Homeless families tend to be more transient, and it’s so difficult right now to find apartments they can afford.”

Wilson said two of the families the ministry works with have found permanent housing in recent weeks, bringing the total to seven families that she knows have gotten out of homelessness this winter.

“People need to be aware this is a problem happening right in their backyards,” said Pattie Stermole, director of Mean Street’s food bank.

“The main thing we do here is expanding as much as we can to help the working poor.”

Mental illness and addictions continue to be key causes in homelessness, and so Mean Street also offers prayers and counseling. But one group can only do so much, and there is always a desperate need for volunteers and donations.

“We publish a new resource guide every year that has the latest resources for people in need, and that alone is a big cost for us,” Fry said.

“We also need overnight and evening hosts for our shelter, and we always need funds to help buy clothes and food.”

Volunteers such as Bledsoe, with her own experience with homelessness, can make all the difference for a family.

“I don’t think most people see the homeless situation the way we do — that these are good people,” she said.

“For me, working with these people has really changed my perspective, and reminded me that the homeless person you see on the street is a person just like you.”
