An Aurora woman who drove into and killed a bicyclist in Englewood and fled the scene has been sentenced to six years in prison, according to a news release by the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Nancy Condit, 64, died the early morning of July 2, according to Englewood police, after Dominique Cain, 33, collided with her while she was on a bicycle at the intersection of South Downing Street Cain and East Cornell Avenue the afternoon of July 1.

Arapahoe High to hold suicide-prevention walk Community remembers recent tragedies, aims to raise awareness

Two years in a row of students dying by suicide haven’t been easily forgotten at Arapahoe High School.

This April, students are taking action to put mental health at the forefront of the community’s collective mind: Arapahoe students got involved with a national organization to put on a suicide-prevention walk on campus.

“Mental health is important and

deserving of a conversation,” wrote Brooke Smiley, a senior at Arapahoe, on Nextdoor. “Suicide affects so many people worldwide, and this could be a step to improving the lives of those who struggle with mental health.”

Smiley and her friend, Ryan Renshaw, coordinated with Arapahoe and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to host the walk from 1 to 4 p.m. April 14 at Arapahoe High, 2201 E. Dry Creek Road.

Two Arapahoe students died by suicide within just days of each other at the end of September and beginning of October. In August 2017, a Powell Middle School student died of an apparent suicide that occurred on Mark Twain Elementary school grounds, one day after another Arapahoe stu-

dent died by suicide.

Though recent years have seen a surge of focus by schools on mental health, youth suicide rates continue to climb, Christine Harms, the director of the School Safety Resource Center, has said. The center is part of the state Department of Public Safety.

“Nobody’s quite sure why,” Harms has said. “But school districts are definitely aware. There’s state money for grants, but we don’t have enough mental health resources here in Colorado … We’re far behind the ratios that are suggested for school counselors, school psychologists, as well as social workers.”

The students at Arapahoe want to raise awareness, as well as money for the American Foundation for Suicide

Prevention, which — along with highlighting the issue — funds scientific research and provides resources and aid to those affected by suicide, according to its website.

You can register for the walk at www.afsp.org/arapahoe. Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk, but anyone who wants to participate can register in person at the walk from check-in at 12:15 p.m. until the walk starts, according to the website. Walk donations are accepted until June 30.

The “Out of the Darkness Campus Walks” program is a student fundraising series aimed at engaging youths and young adults in suicide prevention, according to the foundation’s website.

The Big Apple I went to college in Texas, and then I went to grad school to study sacred music in New York City in the early 1970s. We had wonderful faculty.

I played in the band, I sang in the choir, and everything I could do.

New York City was amazing to a girl from Cherry County. I went to Union Theological Seminary. I wanted to share my music and be the best I could be. It was hard — I didn’t find a full-time job. There weren’t a lot of women heading music departments in big churches. I wouldn’t have wanted to work in those churches anyway — they were a little too, well, serious.

Music is like my therapy. It engages my brain. I love playing something beautiful and fun that I can share with others.

Mid-legislative session Q&A: Meg Froelich State House District 3 lawmaker talks about women’s issues, climate change

Meg Froelich, a former Greenwood Village city councilmember, succeeded state Rep. Jeff Bridges in state House District 3 after winning a vacancy vote among Arapahoe County Democratic Party activists on Jan. 7.

Froelich, a Democrat who lives in Englewood, says she has experience in nonprofit management. A documentary producer, Froelich also has taught social studies at secondaryand higher-education levels.

District 3 covers Englewood, Sheridan, Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village and parts of northern Littleton. The seat opened after a similar vote Jan. 5 selected Bridges, D-Greenwood Village, to fill a vacancy in state Senate District 26 left by state Sen. Daniel Kagan, D-Cherry

Froelich sat down to discuss what she’s accomplished and what’s yet to come during the 2019 regular session, the four-month part of the year when legislators pass bills. It ends May 3.

Has the session so far met, exceeded or failed to meet your expectations?

So far, we’ve been able to accomplish a lot of what most of us have been trying to do Froelich for a long, long time in Colorado. So it’s very rewarding.

For me, it has been absolutely fantastic, an honor, a privilege.

To get to know (these) people has really been one of the better parts of the session. I sit next to Rep. Tom Sullivan — his motivations are so pure. He really is, I feel, the collective conscience of the Democratic caucus. In my mind, he’s the conscience of the chamber. There’s such a diversity of opinion and life stories that people are bringing to the issues that humanize them in a way that takes it to a next level beyond policy.

What are some of the bills you have sponsored so far?

We’re coming at the high cost

of health care in a couple different angles. I’m thankful that’s the mission of the governor, Senate and House.

I have a bill that’s trying to … (align) insurance benefits with primary-care physicians a little more fairly ... You go to the emergency room less, you’re a healthier person.

I have a bill addressing labor trafficking as part of the human trafficking commission recommendations. It’s wage theft, unscrupulous employers. They either don’t pay or underpay their employees. They’re winning contracts based on low bids based on not paying people, and we don’t think that’s a good idea. You have good employers and contractors who are missing contracts because they’re getting underbid by people who aren’t playing by the rules.

What do you plan to sponsor down the stretch?

I come from women’s rights and women’s issues, reproductive rights. I’m looking forward to promoting paid family leave and allday kindergarten, which dovetails into education … support of local community schools. I think the Englewood school board is doing a great job. Our community passed a bond, so our buildings are look-

ing great, and our school board is working really hard — our superintendent is awesome. I think the pieces are in place for Englewood to do what’s right by its students and families.

I’ll be in support of the efforts under those four umbrellas: climate change, health care, education, and women and families.

What is the most important thing the Legislature can do between now and the session’s end?

I think we’ve already done some important things: (the House) already passed the extreme-risk protection order, red flag, bill.

We had two good bills for the LGBTQ community: One was to ban conversion therapy, and one was to help with ID documents for transgender folks. We have two big climate change bills: One addresses greenhouse gases, and one addresses local control of oil and gas, predominantly. That’s basically that the communities where oil and gas operations are occurring should have a say in what happens in their communities.

I just think there’s sort of a forward-thinking and very heartfelt agenda. I think it’s really putting people first over big money at the moment.

Applying for a job in the healthcare industry requires extra time and a focus on the details. Some tips to be successful in applying for a healthcare job includes: Be specific in the objective: Don’t just send a general resume listing your past work experience, education and an indirect objective first line. Look at the description for the job you are

applying and spend the time to make your resume match the job.

Make sure you highlight your skills and abilities as truthfully as possible.

As with all resumes, it needs to be easily readable. A hiring manager does not have time to dig for the details these days. The resume needs to be ready to skim, allowing a hiring manager to pick out the main words that are likely featured throughout the job description post.

Brag about your education: This is a chance to really highlight every accomplishment you have. This means adding all certifications and licenses you’ve received. Include all of them even if they seem irrelevant.

Don’t forget the basics: While the healthcare industry might require specific resumes for every position, they still require the basics to success.

Those basics include:

Don’t exaggerate your qualifications: It may be a job you really want, but don’t quite meet all the requirements.

Even though tempting, never exaggerate your skills, especially for careers in the healthcare industry.

A hiring manager must be able to trust that what they see on that resume is the truth.

When listing your education, be sure to include: • Full certification and license names • The name of the certifying body from which you received the education • A certification number if available • List expiration dates anywhere you can One page doesn’t fit all: Since resumes became the main document needed to apply for a job, most experts recommend you keep it short and simple and cut it down to only one page. In the healthcare industry that isn’t always the case.

As long as all the information is relevant to the job, don’t be afraid to go beyond the one page. It’s OK to have two to three-page resumes if they highlight your skills, objectives,

Proofread: When it’s your own writing and your own work, proofreading might be tough. A sentence you’ve read five times, retyped and reconsidered might look correct because you are on auto-read. Don’t be afraid to have someone else read it over, and for yourself, take a break before proofreading so you are looking at it with fresh eyes.

Facts matter: Make sure you have the names of institutions, universities and education programs correct.

Take the extra minute to look them up online and assure you’ve stated all names correctly.

Include a cover letter: Like the resume, your cover letter shouldn’t just be a template. Your cover letter should be specific to the job you are applying for. Don’t be afraid to change the cover letter with every new application.

Littleton avoids major issues amid blizzard Storm relatively easy on city, despite school closure and power outages

School was canceled, city offices were closed, trees were toppled and swaths of the city went without power — but Littleton still fared better than some areas amid the “bomb cyclone” blizzard of March 13.

Winds topped out between 50 mph and 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service, and 7 to 8 inches of snow fell — relatively mild compared to parts of the Denver metro area that saw gusts above 80 mph and more than a foot of snow, leaving motorists trapped for hours in places.

“It was largely a non-event for us,” said Littleton Police Department spokesman Trent Cooper. “Traffic was light and people were driving cautiously.”

Officers helped some motorists push their cars out of snowdrifts or other precarious positions, Cooper said.

One problem, Cooper said, was that stoplights around the city — which are now largely lit by LED bulbs — no longer get warm enough to melt snow, meaning north-facing stoplights were obscured on southbound Broadway

and Santa Fe Drive.

Still, Cooper said, most motorists were careful through intersections.

Emergency responders were thankful that many residents heeded warnings to stay home ahead of the blizzard, said South Metro Fire Rescue spokesman Eric Hurst.

“Some people got a false sense of security because the day started with just rain,” Hurst said, “but once the blizzard hit, it hit hard — just as predicted.”

Swiftly accruing snowdrifts left motorists with little room to pull over for fire engines in some places, Hurst said.

Crews responded to some stuck motorists, Hurst said, as well as fires sparked by downed electric wires

hitting trees.

Power outages were reported in many neighborhoods around the city, according to Xcel Energy’s online outage map. Crews were busily restoring power on March 14, according to a news release.

Littleton Public Schools stayed closed for a second day on March 14, citing power outages and ongoing icy conditions.

“Great day to go sledding,” said Littleton Public Schools Superintendent Brian Ewert in a tweet. “Enjoy!”

Littleton Mayor Debbie Brinkman said her electricity was out for about eight hours on March 13, but said overall, things went well.

“It was smart for the schools and the

Roads were largely clear by the morning of March 14, and the weekend forecast called for sunny skies and warm weather.

The blizzard was less than impressive to Vance Bowen, a maintenance worker at the Littleton Museum.

“I’m a native,” said Bowen as he shoveled snow from paths at the museum. “When I was a kid, they didn’t shut everything down. They just put chains on the buses and we went to school.”

Collaboration Campus gets new name, hefty donation Sturm Family Foundation expands its portfolio with Castle Rock institution

Arapahoe Community College’s Collaboration Campus project has a new name, and one that came with a hefty and historical donation.

ACC has received $10 million from the Sturm Family Foundation, which it says is the largest in history for Colorado’s 13 institutions within the Colorado Community College System.

“A gift of this magnitude creates real-life opportunities for Colorado students to transition from the classroom into careers,” Colorado Community College System Chancellor Joe Garcia said in a prepared statement.

“The Sturm Collaboration Campus will allow us to remove barriers to students and offer high-quality

programs to meet workforce needs.”

All $10 million will be used for the Castle Rock-based, higher-education school now named the Sturm Collaboration Campus. Half of the funds are already planned for staffing, equipment and technology. There’s also a match potential of $5 million.

DeGette talks politics with Englewood High students Congresswoman doesn’t shy away from Trump, immigration

Englewood High School students didn’t need a trip to Washington, D.C., to get a taste of Congress.

Congress came to them.

U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, who represents Denver, Englewood and nearby areas, addressed several dozen juniors and seniors at EHS on March 15.

The congresswoman didn’t take long to begin talking about her immigration priorities, telling the story of a refugee who came north through Mexico to escape dangers of human trafficking.

“She saw the hope of the United States to give a better future for her children,” said DeGette, who identified herself during the talk as a “progressive Democrat.”

She also didn’t shy away from President Donald Trump, climate change and gun regulation. DeGette mentioned her oversight power in Congress over the federal government in examining Trump’s policy of separating families at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I held their feet to the fire,” DeGette told the audience.

She then mentioned a new effort in Congress to protect undocumented immigrants who qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — a policy started under President Barack Obama — and those currently under a federal program called Temporary Protected Status.

Students in the audience showed their political knowledge, asking questions about the “green new deal,” a controversial effort to invest in cleanenergy jobs and to push for a wider economic safety net.

App lets you visit an Arapahoe County inmate from anywhere STAFF REPORT

A new app allows family members and friends to virtually visit an inmate in the Arapahoe County jail from anywhere with internet access. The Anywhere Visit social media technology by Securus Technologies launched March 5 in Arapahoe County.

“A friend or family member who wants to visit their loved one will no longer have to come to the visitation center at the facility to do that,” bureau chief Vince Line said in a news release. “This will save them time driving to the facility and potentially avoid child-care issues. It will allow everyone to connect more often with inmates. It will also allow family and friends to visit who otherwise cannot get to the facility due to their location in the

world, or perhaps due to health issues or disabilities that would prevent them from coming in person.”

Through the app, 30-minute visits can be scheduled any day from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m.

The Securus app is free to download. The cost for a 30-minute remote visit is $8.99 — 27 percent of the fee goes to the vendor and the rest goes into a fund that supports inmate programs. Just like the visits that take place in the jail, remote visits are subject to monitoring and recording. Man killed girlfriend for flirting with ex-boyfriend, prosecutors say Andrew O’John charged with murder in 2018 death of Keleshia Nash

A young man angry that his new girlfriend was flirting with her exboyfriend shot and killed her last fall in Littleton, prosecutors allege.

Andrew O’John, 20, faces a charge of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Keleshia Nash, 22, at a north Littleton apartment complex in September 2018.

O’John does not dispute that he fired the shot that severed Nash’s carotid artery and lodged in her spine, but says it was an accident that occurred while he was trying to wrestle a gun

away from Nash during an argument, according to testimony from Littleton Police investigators at a preliminary hearing at the Arapahoe County District Court in Centennial on March 15.

O’John has not yet entered a plea in the case, but judge Jeffrey Holmes deemed the evidence sufficient to move forward to trial after the hearing.

Nash and O’John had O’John been dating for a few weeks on Sept. 26, according to testimony from Littleton Police Detective Erin Brannan. That afternoon, O’John got mad after seeing a photo on Nash’s phone of her and her ex-boyfriend, he later told investigators, and the couple spent the evening drinking and arguing.

Not long before midnight, several neighbors near Nash’s apartment on

the 5500 block of South Elati Street called police to report a gunshot and screaming, according to police testimony.

Responding officers found O’John on the second-floor breezeway of the complex, his chest and arms soaked in blood. Officers found the gun used to shoot Nash wrapped in a pizza flier and jammed in a nearby mailbox.

One flight up, on the third floor, Nash lay outside her apartment door, barely breathing. She was transported to Swedish Hospital, where she died two days later.

In interviews, O’John gave rambling and ever-changing stories about what had happened, though he consistently insisted that the gunshot was an accident, Brannan testified.

O’John initially told Brannan he knew little about guns and had only shot his dad’s old rifle and revolver,

but relented after Brannan confronted him with numerous photos from his social media accounts showing him pointing a handgun at the camera.

O’John admitted the gun in several of the photos was the same one he shot Nash with, Brannan said.

At times, O’John said the scene leading up to the shooting involved another man he described either as a random passerby, Nash’s ex, or a drug dealer.

Nash’s death came just weeks after the death of the grandmother who raised her, according to Nash’s obituary. Her mother had died years earlier of an illness.

Nash loved animals and had dreams of becoming a veterinarian or pediatrician, her obituary says.

“She’ll be deeply missed by the friends and family who were fortunate enough to share a part of her life,” the obituary reads.

Mid-legislative session Q&A: Susan Beckman Hyperpartisanship poses problems, says HD 38 representative

It’s failed. It’s such a hyperpartisan year. There are bills being moved through very quickly, and people in the communities are an-

gry. The sex education bill was bad, but that’s only one. The popular vote bill will take away our voice in Colorado. The red flag bill sounds like it will help, but it allows for a spouse to fill out an affidavit to enable civil courts to issue criminal warrants to confiscate guns with no due process. It is a huge diversion from where we’ve been before. I ask people: what else will government come into their house for?

What bills have you sponsored?

I sponsored a bill that would have banned urban encampments along rivers, but it died. We know the pollution around those areas along rivers is high. We know cities and health departments are heavily burdened with having to clean these encampments up. We’re going to have a public health crisis if we don’t clean up our water in some of these areas.

I had another bill, that also died, that would have required needle exchange organizations to track their needles so we’d understand how many we were giving out or taking back. Right now, they’re being left in our parks and along our trails.

Bill aims to stop most scanner encryption

As more law enforcement and fire agencies across the state encrypt or consider encryptReport ing their dispatch radio traffic, a bill was introduced March 12 that seeks to halt the trend.

Blocking the public and news organizations from listening to scanner communications has spurred debate in recent months between media analysts, who say the information is necessary for government transparency, and publicsafety leaders, who argue encryption can keep personnel safer.

House Bill 19-1235 would require most entities of the state government and of cities, counties and special districts to allow their dispatch radio communications to be heard by the public on radio, scanners or online. The bill excepts “tactical” and investigative communications if necessary for safety.

State Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch, is the bill’s sponsor.

Death penalty could end Colorado’s criminal justice world could see a symbolic shift if Democrats succeed in ending the death penalty.

Lawmakers have tried before to repeal Colorado’s death penalty, which has been applied just twice since 1967, the Associated Press reported. The bill would apply to offenses charged on or after July 1, 2019.

The bill’s sponsors, all Democrats, are state Sens. Angela Williams and Julie Gonzales, both of Denver; and state Reps. Jeni Arndt, of Fort Collins, and Adrienne Benavidez, of Adams County.

Senate Bill 19-182 passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on a 3-2 vote and awaited further consideration by the full Senate as of March 14.

Oil-and-gas bill creates conflict at the Capitol

If you can’t beat them, slow them down.

That’s the strategy Republicans at the state Capitol turned to recently to hold up a controversial oil and gas bill, requesting that a different, 2,000page measure be read aloud to halt work in the Senate.

The maneuver didn’t have lasting impact: Democrats had multiple computer programs read the bill at unintelligible speed, a move that drew a Denver court to temporarily prohibit the practice.

Democrats hold majorities in the state Senate and House.

Voters rejected Proposition 112, the effort to set new oil and gas development farther away from buildings and bodies of water, in November, but the push to change Colorado’s political oil and gas landscape is alive and well with Democrats.

The bill’s sponsors, all Democrats, are state Sen. Faith Winter, of Westminster; Williams; and state Reps.

The “most significant and meaningful reform to oil and gas regulations that have passed the Senate in over 60 years,” as state Senate Democrats called it in a news release, would give more control to local governments in regulating oil and gas activity. Under the bill, local governments would have more say over land use and more ability to monitor the industry, among other powers.

More broadly, the bill would change the declared intent of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission — the agency that oversees the industry — to “regulate” oil and gas development to protect public health and safety, rather than to “foster” development in a manner “consistent” with those values.

Littleton receives Domino’s ‘Paving for Pizza’ grant Domino’s promised to save carryout pizza, one pothole at a time, and it is doing just that in Littleton, according to a news release.

Littleton was selected as a “Paving for Pizza” grant recipient based on nominations from Littleton residents.

The Paving for Pizza program, which launched last June, asked customers to nominate their town for a grant to repair potholes. Customers submitted so many

nominations that Domino’s decided to expand the program to pave one community in each state. Since the program launched, Domino’s has received more than 194,000 unique nominations from 17,198 ZIP codes in all 50 states.

Littleton plans to throw a Pothole Paving Palooza in April, during which the grant will be used to pave potholes.

Littleton residents are welcome and will enjoy free pizza, giveaways and surprises. The date and location will be announced at littletongov.org.

The “senior homestead exemption.” it’s a tax credit to help keep seniors in their homes, which waives property taxes on the first $200,000 of home value.

Seniors on fixed incomes depend on that. You have to be in your home for 10 years to claim it, and I want to preserve the exemption for seniors who relocate due to medical necessity. Democrats have introduced bills that will reduce or eliminate the credit.

They need to be cautious they don’t crash the economy. I saw the bust of 1983.

I worry that with the rest of the nation easing up on oil and gas regulations and us tightening down, that industry will go somewhere else. It’s billions of dollars into our economy and tens of thousands of jobs.

I worry about a march toward more control and taxation. There are things happening here that people don’t like. We have such great people here in Colorado who love freedom and think Colorado’s exceptional. I hope we can keep it that way.

VOICES ‘Like’ is, like, not really something to, like, like

am, like, tired of it.

More than tired.

It makes me puke.

Vomit. Regurgitate.

Retch. Heave.

It is the extragrammatical word “like” I am talking about. It adds nothing, it means nothing, but it says (to me) the speaker Craig Marshall is a boneheaded, imbecilic, no-account Smith clodpole.

It used to be the domain of teenlunkers.

But I hear it from 20-somethings and

30-somethings and 40-somethings.

It rarely appears in text, because we rarely write with fillers.

You might say “uh,” but you don’t write “uh.” Or if you do, it’s uncommon.

I had a college professor who said “uh” every third word. I started keeping track. One day he was up to 88, and I couldn’t take it anymore.

I did something regrettable.

I left a note in his mailbox about it.

How he diminished his “wonderful lectures” (I had to add a little softener) with hems and haws.

Hey, I’m not perfect. I could be called to task by a strict grammarian all day and all night.

There’s a linguist named John McWhorter who astonishes me with his grasp of words, etymologies and meanings. He is an associate professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University.

McWhorter wrote a lengthy piece for The Atlantic (Nov. 25, 2016), titled “The Evolution of `Like.’ How the ubiquitous, often-reviled word associated with young people and slackers represents the ever-changing English language.”

I’ll make reference to it shortly.

The first time I saw — and heard — McWhorter, he was being interviewed

by Don Lemon after the Jussie Smollett incident.

McWhorter spoke without a script but sounded as if he were reading from

My perspective on this issue is personal. Our family was in constant fear of losing our eldest daughter to suicide nearly a decade ago. She was just a child of 17 years at the time. Today, she’s healthy and successful.

Our family took action and removed all the firearms in our home. However, today Colorado’s families, especially those who have adult family members

living on their own, don’t have such capabilities to take preventive measures.

I challenge the members of this committee, especially my fellow Republicans, to find common ground and work together in a bipartisan manner to support a thoughtful, comprehensive bill that balances Second Amendment protections with desperate families coping with a loved one in the midst of a crisis.

Each member of this committee has an opportunity to make a real difference and reduce suicide in their community, help and protect law enforcement, and, most importantly, give hope to desperate families. Please act!

Relationships around money are important to examine

hen many people hear the term “financial adviser,” they may think of someone who mostly manages investments.

While that may have been true in the past, today you may desire a holistic adviser who focuses on your life goals and relationships. Your adviser could help strengthen your marriage and help you set good examples for your kids.

One important area of focus is the impact of personal relationships on your financial future. Surprisingly, few couples discuss their long-term financial goals and short-term approaches to money management before they get married, in my experience. This can lead to significant challenges down the road as couples with different objectives and spending habits struggle to find common ground. This may be more true as many couples are waiting longer to get married and financial patterns are already well-ingrained.

In the paper “Examining the Relationship Between Financial Issues and Divorce,” researchers found that couples who argue or disagree about finances are 69 percent more likely to get a divorce than couples who don’t. ¹ Talking about money is important, as financial disagreements can have a major impact on relationships. The following tips are intended to help couples foster a positive relationship with money

Discuss what this limit should be and make sure it is the same for each person. Whether it is $100 or $1,000, find an amount that makes sense. By setting these limits, each spouse has a certain degree of flexibility, while still seeking

When new issues arise, try to discuss them immediately and involve your adviser for an update to see how these changes may affect your overall plan.

Make sure you have an adviser who is willing to help you achieve your

long-term financial goals and work with you to build an ongoing strategy. It is important to set the foundation before you make investment decisions. Focus on your overall financial wellness, not on the daily stock market. This can help reduce stress and improve your relationships as they relate to money.

‘Our Town’ takes rare turn in the round

Tips and tricks for starting gardens in spring, early summer

H

umanity has always had a connection with the earth, said John Stolzle, a Colorado State University Extension agent in Jefferson County who specializes in horticulture, plant pathology and food systems.

“Gardening is a direct way for people to interact with nature’s processes,” Stolzle said.

However, with the state’s diverse — and often unpredictable — weather, Colorado can present greater challenges to gardeners than many other U.S. states.

Luckily, Stolzle said, “there are a few tips and tricks that can help when starting up spring and summer gardens.”

It all depends on the last frost Planting in Colorado is highly weather dependent and each year is different, Stolzle said.

But one tip to remember is not to start too early, Stolzle said.

“The key, in my opinion, is to be patient,” he said. “And to plant according to the last predicted frost date.”

Because the latter varies regionally, paying close attention to local weather forecasts may be the best bet. In general, gardeners can bestguess that the last frost date will likely be sometime late April or early May, Stolzle said.

PlantTalk Colorado, a resource for Coloradans to find research-based gardening information specific to Colorado’s diverse climate, suggests that “people in the Denver metropolitan area normally use Mother’s Day as a guide for when to plant.”

This year, Mother’s Day falls on May 12.

COURTESY OF THE GROWHAUS For those who want to get an early start on their gardens, Coloradans can plant seedlings indoors, then transplant them outdoors when the weather is appropriate.

General recommendations on when to start plants indoors range from two to eight weeks before transplantation, Stolzle said. But to get a more exact time frame for each plant, he said, seed packets will usually include the specific recommendations for that plant.

Acclimating plants to the outdoors before planting them outside can also help, Stolzle said.

But, to “avoid shocking their systems, plants should be introduced to the outdoors slowly, over time,” Stolzle said.

Grandma’s tip to avoid a freeze The location of a plant, the duration of a cold spell and temperature can all play a part in a plant freezing, Stolzle said.

Colorado State University Extension’s Colorado Master Gardeners are volunteers trained in horticulture. Master Gardeners have a plethora of troubleshooting information and advice for new and experienced gardeners, available all year round.

Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” is perhaps the quintessential example of this.

First produced in 1938, the three-act play explores small-town Americana, nostalgia and the struggles that accompany everyday life. In other words, it’s about all of us.

Clarke Reader “It’s a show that does one of the best jobs of making sense of the mystery we live out every day,” said Jim Hunt, who plays the role of Stage Manager. “It’s universal because of the way it captures the changes we all experience in our daily lives.”

Directed by Len Matheo, “Our Town” takes audiences to the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, between 1901 and 1913. The Stage Manager serves as the narrator and chronicler of the town’s happenings, which include the big events — birth, love, death and everything in between.

While Wilder’s words remain very much intact in Miners’ production, the company is playing with the visuals a bit by having the actors wear contemporary clothing, and the show will be presented in the round — a rarity at the theater.

The show includes some heavy moments (just like life) but there are plenty of humorous moments and wise lines to make the darkness a little more bearable.

“Wilder did an unbelievable job of capturing the essence of what it means to be alive,” Hunt said. “I think people will connect with it and since it’s being produced in Golden, they might recognize some of their own small town on the stage.”

A Colorado Master Gardener reference sheet published by Colorado State University Extension notes that “grandma’s old method of covering the garden with blankets and sheets works well as long as the fabric remains dry.” The cover should be placed in the evening before a frost is suspected, but it must be removed the next day so the sunlight can recharge the soil with heat.

Cool versus warm season veggies “Knowing the difference between cool and warm season vegetables can save a lot of headache,” Stolzle said.

“But, in all of these cases, a cold, hard freeze will likely kill any plants left out or left unprotected.”

Hardy, cool season vegetables: Hardy, cool season vegetables prefer cooler temperatures and can likely survive a “frosty nip,” Stolzle said.

They can be planted outside about two to four weeks before the anticipated last frost date of the season. Examples include onions, some spinach, lettuce, radish and broccoli.

Tender, warm season vegetables: Tender, warm season vegetables do not tolerate frost and need higher temperatures to grow well, Stolzle said.

They should be planted when daytime temperatures are above at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Examples include cucumbers, New Zealand spinach and summer squash.

Colorado New Play Summit aims to open doors

Annual event fosters budding talent through interactive process

hen a painter or sculptor begins a new work, she or he sets a pace and probably has a fairly clear vision of the desired end product.

While it may undergo some critical input along the way, the process is a solo one in general. But works on stage have many moving parts and depend on more than one creative brain before they are finally up and running … The playwrights chosen for the annual Colorado New Play Summit work for two weeks with an experienced director and actors, reworking at times, perhaps rewriting for added clarity or special effect — then they absorbed input from prospective audience members to shape and polish scenes further.

In 2006 the Denver Center for the Performing Arts initiated the program called the Colorado New Play Summit that allows audiences to watch the process as a new play begins its life onstage, with readings and rewrites as playwright and director and actors take a new script and begin the road to what perhaps becomes a full production. The 2019 summit plays ran on Feb. 16-17 and/ or 22-24 and introduced readings of four new plays and a concert version of a new musical, “Rattlesnake Kate,” based on the story of the colorful Kate Slaughterback.

The playwrights who are chosen work for two weeks, then they need to find a theater that will mount a full production—a considerable financial commitment. From this 2019 summit program, Denver Center will probably choose a couple for future production. More than 50 readings have been presented since the program began in 2006 and a full production of “Last Night and the Night Before” by Donetta Lavinia Graves (2017) is running as part of

this season.

Scenery and costumes come later.

Presentations consist of a cast of actors in street clothes, standing and reading through a script in the polished manner a well-trained actor can, after a read-through and rehearsal process. The audience brings imagination.

A ticket involves Friday afternoon and evening, all day Saturday plus Sunday afternoon and is just a really fine experience for the theater lover — words, words, words in assorted flavors, precisely arranged to set a mood, spin a story — and create response(s) from the audience. One finishes the experience a bit tired, but also filled with new images and ideas to sort through.

What a joy it is to watch these pros at work!

Some of these new plays will be chosen for full Denver production in a couple years — and it is really rewarding to return to enjoy a final, reworked, polished product a few years hence.

The 2019 plays included:  “In the Upper Room” by Beaufield Berry, about a multigenerational black family in the 1970s.

Matriarch Rose is the center of the circle, although she frightens and frustrates everyone involved in family dynamics. Omaha-based Berry said in an interview that her ancestors came back to visit her and the house felt haunted. The dialogue as parallel stories develop is especially warm and wonderful. I’d love to see this one fully developed.  “Wally World” is based on his mother’s experiences as a Walmart manager in El Paso, according to playwright Isaac Gomez. It’s Christmas Eve and a staff of varied characters prepare to close on the only day the store closes. Eleven different folks, clearly drawn, “try to find purpose in a place that has never seen purpose in them,” Gomez said.  “You Lost Me” by Bonnie Metzger is set on Newfoundland’s Shipwreck Coast and begins a tale of family history with one Ann Harvey, who saved 160 shipwrecked Irish people from a wreck in 1828.

Her teenage nephew Joe-L lives with her and is perhaps slated for wreckage, as numerous other, carefully drawn characters pass through the Inn.  “twenty50” by Tony Meneses looks at the year 2050, when Andres Salazar is running for political office in a time where Latinos are a majority and the political environment is still difficult. His family is also supportive and stressed as a stranger appears …  “Rattlesnake Kate” is a musical in development and had an engaging concert presentation — not an element generally included in the play series, but a bonus for this year. Neyla Pekarek, formerly cellist and vocalist with the Lumineers

band, has been fascinated with the tale of Rattlesnake Kate, a Greeley area legend, who happened on a migration of hundreds of rattlers while out on horseback with her young son. She fought them off with her gun and a no-trespassing sign — and ultimately had a 1920s-style dress made from the skins! Kate Slaughterback had six husbands and a lengthy correspondence with another man she never met. (Lots of story material for certain.) Pekarek has worked this bit of history into a song cycle, released her debut album, “Rattlesnake,” and is commissioned to write music and lyrics for “Rattlesnake Kate,” paired with playwright Kate Hartman. We saw a presentation with three Kates, a band and narrative sort of singing by Pekarek. Watch for this bit of local lore to appear fully staged

The Renaissance man comes to life New exhibit marks 500 years since da Vinci’s death

To-do lists are a fairly common feature of daily life in the 21st century, but it turns out this organizational method has been around for centuries — just ask Italian Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci.

While most of us have things like “do the shopping” or “clean the kitchen,” items on da Vinci’s list involved things like finding a way to measure the size of the sun and study the tongue of a woodpecker.

Insights like these are among things visitors to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s “Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius” exhibit can learn about one of humanity’s most adventurous thinkers.

“On one list, da Vinci had written that he should try to buy some corn, which had just been brought from the new world,” said Stephen Nash, curator of archaeology at the museum.

“The audacity of these lists is just incredible. It gives you a look into the mind of the man.”

Presented at the museum, 2001 Colorado Blvd., by the Sturm Family Foundation through Aug. 25, the exhibit is one of the most comprehensive about da Vinci that has ever been created. It was made in honor of 2019 being the 500th anniversary of his death.

Today, da Vinci is recognized as an innovator in the fields of art, science, engineering and other disciplines.

But examples of his work were mostly scattered or destroyed following his death. The few surviving artifacts are in private collections or permanently housed in museums.

DA VINCI QUICK FACTS Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in Anchiano, Italy, near the Tuscan town of Vinci. He was born out of wedlock to a notary and a peasant woman. da Vinci never received a traditional formal education. His natural gifts caught the attention of his mentors.

He moved to Milan around 1481 after convincing Duke Ludovico Sforza of his talents as an artist and engineer. His work began to expand to studies of architecture, military engineering and strategy, mechanical flight, theatrical production and music.

“What creates a person that is so far advanced, perhaps more so than anybody else in history?” asked George Sparks, president and CEO of the DMNS. “Our staff spent a lot of time working to make this exhibit our own at the museum as we thought about these questions.”

Some of the inventions are scaled down, some are life-sized and others are oversized and some have mechanisms visitors can try for themselves.

As da Vinci is most well-known for his artwork, his creations in the medium take a special place in the exhibit.

There are print reproductions of his Florentine oil paintings, like “The Annunciation” and “Virgin on the Rocks.”

There is also an animation of “The

Last Supper,” which provides a look at what makes it such a unique work.

One highlight of the exhibit is the use of the state-of-the-art SENSORY4 technology, which uses high-definition motion graphics and surround sound, combined with authentic photography and video footage. The end result gives the visitor a feeling of being immersed in da Vinci’s mind.

Unsurprisingly, its da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” that gets the most in-depth exploration. The exhibit provides an analysis of the iconic painting conducted at the Louvre by scientific engineer and photographer Pascal Cotte.

According to the museum’s information, the display includes super-magnified examinations, a 13-foot-high infrared print and the only 360-degree replica ever made of “Mona Lisa.”

The museum prides itself on bringing its own touch to the exhibits, and that shines through in the presence of the museum’s enactors, who will be wandering through the exhibit as characters who bring a personal perspective to the story of da Vinci and the age in which he lived.

As da Vinci neared the end of his life, he supposedly said “I have offended God and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have.” Experiencing the exhibit, it becomes difficult to believe that anyone could have achieved more. Instead, and by design, it invited the visitor to consider what da Vinci would think about modern advancements.

“We want people to ask themselves, `What would Leonardo think?’ about life today,” Nash said. “I think, if nothing else, his to-do list would be much longer and more interesting.”

The road to Mars includes a detour through Lakewood Mars Society is dedicated to human exploration and settlement on Mars

In Robert Zubrin’s Lakewood office hangs a photo he took in 2009 of a space shuttle taking off to repair the Hubble Space Telescope, a mission he strongly advocated for, despite pushback from former NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe.

Zubrin, an aerospace engineer, sees two versions of the future for humanity. The first is where new worlds are being explored, and even if things can go wrong, there’s an optimistic future of infinite possibilities. The other future is bleak in which the world is crowded and lacks enough resources to go around.

“I want the first version, and Mars is the closest planet that has all the resources needed for life and civilization. If we can go there, that’s the first step in becoming a multi-planet species,” said Zubrin. “They say the Earth is only so big. It isn’t, because it comes with an infinite sky.”

Zubrin co-founded The Mars Society in 1998, a Lakewood based organization that is dedicated to human exploration and settlement on Mars. The organization, which has at least 7,000 members, works on public outreach and educational programs, political advocacy and research.

The Mars Society has two simulated sites that mirror conditions on Mars — one in the Canadian Arctic and the other in a Utah desert. The sites are used for practice Mars missions to further understand the technology and science needed for humans to operate on the planet. Crews of typically six people attempt to conduct a sustained program of field exploration while operating as if they are on Mars. In the Utah location, a crew found a dinosaur bone, something that Zubrin says a rrobotic rover might have missed.

“Until we can send humans to Mars, I want to send rovers. These are very limited tools compared to what humans can do,” said Zubrin. “The human explorer is at least a thousand times faster and better than the rover.”

Shannon Rupert, an ecologist and the director of the Mars Society’s Utah site, said she used to tell people we would be on Mars in 2013. Zubrin said the biggest obstacle to getting to Mars has been “the decay of the political system.”

“It’s a matter of having the desire to go, that driving force to get there. 20 years ago, we were considered nutty, fringe scientists,” said Rupert. “Now we’re right in the mainstream. I think we will go to Mars.”

There’s political support for the Mars project. In 2017 President Donald Trump signed a NASA funding bill that included plans for a 2030’s manned mission to Mars.

ABOUT THE MARS SOCIETY Robert Zubrin co-founded the Mars Society in 1998 with a mission to further explore Mars and to create a permanent settlement for humans on the planet. The Lakewood based organization works on public outreach and educational programs, research, political advocacy efforts and more. It currently has two practice Mars exploration stations. One is in the Arctic and the other is located at a desert in Utah. At those sites, practice Mars missions have been carried out to learn how to explore the planet. and Technology Committee and the Subcommittee on Space, noted that in 2033, Earth and Mars will be close enough to erase months of typical travel time to reach Mars. Perlmutter said NASA’s long-term exploration goals include human exploration of Mars, and the plans from this Administration to go back to the Moon depend on developing and testing the technologies needed for a mission to Mars. As part of the NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2017, there is a required report from NASA on the technical and cost requirements for a human mission to Mars in 2033. The report is still in the works.

“There are several technical challenges to a Mars mission, but we can tackle all of those challenges with our partners in the aerospace industry just like we did 50 years ago during the Apollo program. As Americans, exploration is in our DNA, and space exploration fuels American innovation,” said Perlmutter.

Zubrin envisions a frontier environment when it comes to living on Mars initially. He says in certain ways, life won’t be as appealing as life on Earth.

People will live in enclosed habitats and not have all the same comforts of home as there are on Earth.

Cable, Stenstrom take honors

Vista, Legend take game to Arizona diamonds

Diver, swimmer land college scholarships for prowess in pools

Franny Cable and Lindsay Stenstrom have a lot in common.

Both are heading to major universities next fall on swimming and diving scholarships and both are focused on their sports.

And both were honored by Colorado Community Media.

Cable, a senior at Arapahoe High School, is the 2018-19 South Metro Girls Diver of the Year. Stenstrom, a senior at Valor Christian High School, is the 2018-19 South Metro Girls Swimmer of the Year.

Cable won her second consecutive 5A diving title in February with a Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center pool record of 562.10 points. She also repeated as the Continental League diving champion.

“It was a hard year at the beginning but I definitely picked it up more and more as I got closer to state,” said Cable, who will continue her diving career at the University of Kansas. “It was my senior year and I was going to do the best that I could.”

Arapahoe diving coach Jeff Smith marvels at Cable’s talent and tenacity.

“Her laser-like focus is unmatched,” said Smith. “She gets up, smiles at the judges like it’s a game, then goes into the zone like none other. Since her second-place finish at state her sophomore year, she has lost only once. That happened this year at the Coaches Invitational. I saw it in her eyes — that was never going to happen again.

“She has grown as a person in our time together. At practice when she is not on the boards, she is always playing around. Her playfulness during practice is contagious. It makes everyone loosen up, have fun and come back.”

Stenstrom, whose mother Lori was a swimmer at Stanford and whose sister Brooke is a member of the current Stanford Cardinals team, has signed to swim at UCLA. She won the 5A Jeffco individual championships in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. She was fourth at the 5A state meet in the 50 freestyle and the runner-up in the 100 freestyle.

“Obviously I wanted to place high but I just gave it my best,” said Stenstrom.

Valor coach Melody Peotter expects to hear more about Stenstrom’s successes in the future.

“Transitioning from 4A to 5A was a challenge for our team, but Lindsay rose to the challenge and finished her high school career well,” said Peotter.

“Lindsay is a strong competitor and committed athlete. She excels at everything she puts her mind to both in and out of the pool. I believe she will thrive next year swimming at UCLA.”

ow that the winter sports season is over and driveway is finally clear of snow, it is time to catch up on a few other things.

First off, the Mountain Vista and Legend baseball teams displayed good timing. There were no baseball, soccer or lacrosse games played OVERTIME in Colorado on March 13 or 14 because of snow.

Golf or track events were also postponed.

However Vista and Legend did play baseball because they were in the Jim Benton Boras Baseball Classic of Arizona in the Phoenix area. The Douglas County School District didn’t go on spring break until the week of March 18-22 but Vista and Legend players didn’t miss too much school because of two snow days.

Coming and going Darren Withey is the new athletic director at Highlands Ranch and Valor Christian AD Jamie Heiner has resigned effective at the end of the school year and is changing careers.

Withey, a Spanish teacher in the EDGE program at Legend, will take over for the 2019-20 school year.

He was the former Aurora Central head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Aurora Central, Mountain Vista and Legend and assistant baseball coach at Mountain Vista, Rock Canyon and Legend. He was an assistant softball coach at Legend.

Withey’s mother was a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan and his dad, Jim, was a semi-professional baseball player in Harvey, Illinois.

Heiner, Valor’s AD for the past four years, will be pursuing a full-time pastoral role at Journey Church in Castle Pines.

Valor has the search for a new AD. Impressive debut Clint Evans has made an impressive coaching debut in Colorado.

“He has extremely good vision on the ice as attested by his 23 assists,” said Wolverines coach Ryan Finnerock. “His biggest attribute is his speed and skill. He is right that sometimes assists are overlooked more than goals by some. However, we value them on our team as equal to goals.

“Alex did not play of Chaparral last season. He made the decision in his senior year to come back and play for his high school. He chose high school hockey because it has become more competitive than club AAA hockey and he said the level of hockey is equal to or greater in high school compared to AAA.”

It was late in the third period of the state semifinal game against eventual state champion Regis Jesuit when Alex Harlan set up Chaparral’s best scoring chance of the contest.

The Chaparral senior sent a pass to a teammate in the slot, which didn’t result in a goal in the 4-0 loss on March 1, but it showed the kind of player Harlan is — when assists to him are as important as the resulting goals.

Harlan is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Hockey Player of the Year.

He was one of the state leaders with 23 assists. He had 14 goals and tied with fellow senior Dylan Florit for the team lead with 37 points for the Wolverines. Harlan missed two games because of concussion protocol.

“A lot of times the talk is about the player who scored the goals and not the player who had the assists,” said Harlan. “But the players know how important assists are.

“Yeah, sometimes I look to pass first.

My dad keeps telling me to look for shots. I’m just glad I was able to play well this season.”

Harlan’s brother, Max, was an AllState goalie for Regis last season.

Alex Harlan has gone to Chap for four seasons and chose to play high school this season instead of AAA club hockey with the Thunderbirds.

(b) In evaluating plans and specifications for the construction of buildings and structures in compliance with the Design Guidelines, the Design Review Board shall take into consideration factors that include without limitation the conformity and harmony of external design of the proposed structures in the Town, and the location of the building, shrubs, trees and other structures with respect to topography, view and finish ground elevation. (c) The Design Review Board shall follow all rules and regulations enacted by the Board of Trustees and conduct all meetings in accordance with the Colorado Open Meetings Law, C.R.S. § 24-6-401, et seq.

Sec. 2-116. Appeals.

All appeals from decisions of the Design Review Board will be referred to the Board of Adjustments in accordance with Section 16-18.

No buildings, accessory structures or land shall be used and no building or accessory construction shall be erected, converted or structurally altered except for the following: (1) Growing of crops.

(2) The keeping of livestock in accordance with the Bow Mar Municipal Code provisions as may be amended.

(3) Maximum of three single family dwellings meeting the bulk requirements (height, area regulations, dwelling size and footprint and lighting regulations) of the Residential District 2 of the Town of Bow Mar. For purposes of determining dwelling size pursuant to the Code, each single family dwelling shall be deemed to be located on a lot consisting of one acre in size.

(4) Accessory uses or structures incidental to the enumerated uses (1) through (3) above, provided that: a. No more than three accessory structures shall be permitted on any property zoned Agricultural. b. The maximum height of any accessory structure on property zoned Agricultural shall not exceed 20 feet. c. The maximum square footage of any accessory structure permitted on property zoned Agriculture shall not exceed two thousand five hundred (2,500) square feet. d. Guest quarters for use by temporary guests or invitees of the property owner are permitted within the accessory structure provided that: (1) such guests or invitees shall not occupy the quarters for more than 30 continuous days, (2) the property owner is not permitted to collect any rental or lease income from the guests or invitees, and (3) not more than forty-nine percent (49%) of the square footage of the accessory structure may be devoted for use as guest quarters. (b) Minimum lot size. The minimum lot size for any property to be zoned Agricultural is 30 acres. Contiguous lots under common ownership may be aggregated for purposes of determining minimum lot size. If adjoining properties are aggregated in order to meet the minimum lot size requirement of the Agricultural District (thirty (30) acres or larger), said adjoining properties must remain under common ownership to preserve the zoning classification. Common ownership includes ownership by spouses and/or children of the original owner, or entities controlled by such persons. (c) Design Review Board Review. All new construction or proposed building alteration must obtain approval of the Design Review Board prior to construction or alteration.   Section 3. Section 16-17 of the Bow Mar Municipal Code is hereby amended as follows: Sec. 16-17. Procedures When Applying for Variances from Zoning Restrictions. (a) Any applicant for grant of a variance from the restrictions imposed by any of the Town's zoning ordinances shall submit an application for a variance to the Design Review Board. (b) The information to be provided by the variance-seeking applicant shall include, at a minimum, all of the information that is described in the annually distributed Directory of the Town of Bow Mar and on the Town’s website, under the caption "Construction Procedures in the Town of Bow Mar." (c) The information that a variance-seeking applicant must provide to the Design Review Board shall include the following: (1) Name, address and telephone numbers of the applicant and current address or legal description of property.

(2) For minor improvements: An accurate plot plan showing the relationship between the setbacks and the boundaries. This does not need to be signed by a registered engineer. Minor improvements would include a shed or other accessory construction within a setback or a variance to fence height, for example.

(3) For additions and new construction: a. Map of the property (minimum 24" x 36"), which shall depict the residence at an appropriate and commonly used scale and shall also depict and identify all property boundaries and adjacent property owners, all public rights-of-way and easements and the location, type and size of all utility lines. In addition, the map shall depict, clearly, the proposed improvement and the precise dimensions of the variance requested.

Accurate surface area calculations (which may be depicted on the above-described map) of all existing structures and all proposed improvements. c. Accurate elevations of all existing structures and proposed improvements, noting the point of reference from which all such elevations are measured. d. A drainage study or map of the property, including thereon the name, address, telephone number and license number of the registered engineer and/or land surveyor who prepared such instrument. (d) The Town may impose reasonable fees for consideration of variance requests. (e) The Board of Adjustment will conduct a public hearing to consider and act upon an application for a variance. To effect prior notice of the requested variance to all impacted or potentially impacted residents, any applicant for a variance shall post a sign in front of the property for which a variance is requested. This sign shall be posted for at least 21 days prior to said hearing. (f) The sign to be posted in front of the property for which a variance is requested shall be at least thirty-six (36) by forty-eight (48) inches in dimension. The sign shall be posted in a conspicuous location along each public street that abuts the applicant's property. Section 4. Section 16-18 of the Bow Mar Municipal Code is hereby amended as follows: Sec. 16-18. Board of Adjustment. (a) There is hereby established a Board of Adjustment consisting of five (5) members, each to be appointed by the Board of Trustees for twoyear terms or the remaining term filled. The Board of Adjustment shall hear and decide appeals from and review any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the Building Commissioner or the Design Review Board. It shall also hear and decide all matters referred to it or upon which it is required to pass under this Chapter. The concurring vote of four (4) members of the Board of Adjustment shall be necessary to reverse any order, requirement, decision or determination of the Building Commissioner or the Design Review Board, or to decide in favor of the applicant any matter upon which it is required to pass under this Chapter, or to hear and decide any variance from this Chapter.

Each decision of the Board of Adjustment shall be subject, however, to review by certiorari by the District Court of any county within which the property in question is located. An appeal may be taken by any person aggrieved, by any officer or department of the Town or by the Town itself. (b) Any appeal from the Building Commissioner or the Design Review Board to the Board of Adjustment shall be taken by filing with the Building Commissioner or Design Review Board within a period of time to be established by the Board of Adjustment, but in no event more than 60 days, a written notice of appeal, specifying the grounds therefor. The Building Commissioner or Chair of the Design Review Board shall at once transmit to the Board of Adjustment all of the papers constituting the record upon which the action appealed from was taken. The Board of Trustees may establish by resolution from time to time the filing fee required to be paid in order to maintain such an appeal. (e) Upon appeal in specific cases, where there are practical difficulties or unnecessary hardships in the way of carrying out the strict letter of this Article, the Board of Adjustment has the power to vary or modify the application of the regulations or provisions of this Article relating to the use, construction or alteration of buildings or structures, or to the use of land, so that the spirit of this Article is observed, public safety and welfare secured and substantial justice done. No variance shall be granted to modify any lot, road or other detail shown on the map attached to the ordinance codified herein nor shall any variance be granted that is consistent with the values set forth in Section 16-1 of this Chapter. (f) Every decision of the Board of Adjustments shall be subject to review by certiorari by the district court.

Section 5. Section 18-4 of the Bow Mar Municipal Code is hereby amended as follows:

Sec. 18-4. Design Review Board Approval and Permit application. (a) Approval and Permits required. No person shall construct, add to, alter, repair or improve or remove the exterior of any building or structure in the Town, or cause the same to be done, without first obtaining written approval from the Design Review Board. A building permit shall be required for any construction, alteration, repair or improvement to the interior or exterior of a building or structure from the Building Commissioner. Neither the Town nor the Building Commissioner shall have any liability for the issuance of any permit for inadequate or defective plans or specifications. (b) Design Review Board Application. An Applicant shall submit a completed application to the Design Review Board signed by the applicant or his or her agent or representative and shall contain all additional necessary documentation required by the Town. (c). Application. To obtain a permit, the applicant shall first file an application therefore in writing. Each such application shall be signed by the applicant or his or her agent and shall contain such information as may reasonably be required by the Building Commissioner, including: (1) Identification of the work to be covered by the permit for which application is made.

(2) Description of the land on which proposed work is to be done by plat description or by house address and street name. Any new house number required shall be assigned by the Building Commissioner in accordance with a master street plan which is in the office of the Town Clerk.

(3) A statement of the valuation and anticipated cost of the proposed work.

(4) Payment of all fees, including payment of the building fee and all inspection fees as may be set by the Board of Trustees from time to time.

(5) Two (2) sets of plans and specifications shall be submitted, except that for minor alterations or repairs of a nonstructural nature, the Building Commissioner may waive this requirement for plans and specifications. The plans and specifications shall contain at least the following information: a. Plot plan. Scale shall be one-sixteenth (1/16 ) inch equals one (1) foot zero (0) inches, oneeighth (1/8 ) inch equals one (1) foot zero (0) inches, or one (1) inch equals twenty (20) feet, with the latter preferred, and shall show: (1) size and location of lot; (2) location of all buildings and structures on the lot; (3) all elevations including established street elevation at the extension of lot lines, existing and finished grade elevations at each corner of lot and at each corner of the setback lines, and roof elevations and elevations of each floor or level of each building or structure; and (4) all easements and setback requirements. b. Foundation. For any construction involving a new foundation or modification of an existing foundation, a soil analysis by an accepted testing laboratory shall be required. The foundation design shall be based upon engineering calculations by an engineer registered in the State in accordance with results of the soil analysis, and the foundation plans must be signed by such engineer. c. Detail. Drawings and specifications shall completely indicate and describe all of the proposed work, including the sizes, grade and quality of materials and equipment to be incorporated in the improvements. Except for the plot plan, drawings shall be accurately drawn to a scale not less than one-eighth (1/8) inch equals one (1) foot zero (0) inches. d. Floor plans. Plans of all floors, basement and/or foundation shall be included, including direction, size and spacing of all framing members. e. Heating and cooling. Size and layout of heating and cooling units, pipes, ducts, registers, radiators and any special arrangements shall be shown. f. Plumbing fixtures. Show location and size to scale of all fixtures and domestic hot water units. g. Electric. Show location of entry service, meters, panels and outlets and major electrical appliance. h. Exterior elevations. Front, rear and side elevations shall be included showing all window and door openings, wall finish materials, flashing, present and finish grades, depth of footings, finish floor elevations and top of structure elevation. i. Cross sections. Fully dimensioned cross sections through exterior walls shall be shown to scale, including all details of construction from bottom of footings to highest point of roof necessary for complete roof construction indication.

A drainage plan prepared by a licensed engineer for any new home or addition, which shall include an analysis of the effects of drainage caused by the construction on said home or adjacent properties. m. Signature by registered architect or engineer.

All plans must be certified by an architect or engineer registered by the State who is regularly engaged in the design of building structures.

Supporting calculations may be required by the Building Commissioner.

Metropolitan Districts

Section 6. Section 18-8(b)(5) of the Bow Mar Municipal Code is hereby amended as follows:

Sec. 18-8. Adoption of building code.

*** K103.1 Permits Required. Except as specified in Section K103.2 of this section, no person shall do any grading without first having obtained a grading permit from the Building Official. A grading permit may be issued by the Building Official for excavation, filling or grading within any project to be completed in phases, provided that a final site development plan has been submitted, approved and recorded for the entire project or the first phase of a project, in which case a grading plan shall include maps indicating: existing and proposed topography at no greater than two-foot contour intervals unless otherwise approved by the Building Official; all existing trees greater than 4" diameter (MBH), with clear designation of those that are to be retained and those that are to be removed; existing structures, with clear designation of those to be retained and to be removed; the location, type and size of all existing public utilities, and those proposed for relocation; and an erosion/sediment control plan prepared in accordance with the City of Littleton's Storm Drainage Design and Technical Criteria Manual. The grading plan shall be compatible with the final site development plan as approved or recommended by the Design Review Board and such grading plan shall also bear the stamp of a competent professional who is registered and in good standing in the State of Colorado prior to issuance by the Building Official of a grading permit. When required erosion/sediment control facilities will not be installed contemporaneously with the completion of grading, the Building Official may require a financial guarantee in an amount sufficient to guarantee installation, construction, and operation of such erosion/sediment control facilities, plus twenty-five percent (25%) of such estimated amount. Said guarantee shall be cash, a letter of credit, surety bond, or suitable guarantee in a form satisfactory to the Building Official.

*** Section 7. If any part, section, subsection, sentence, clause or phrase of this ordinance is for any reason held to be invalid, such decision shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this ordinance; and the Board of Trustees hereby declares it would have passed this ordinance, and each part, section, subsection, sentence, clause or phrase thereof, regardless of the fact that any one or more parts, sections, subsections, sentences, clauses or phrases be declared invalid.

Section 8. The Board of Trustees hereby finds, determines and declares that this ordinance is necessary and proper for the health, safety and welfare of the Town and the inhabitants thereof.

“You don’t do this to win championships but I can’t imagine writing a better story,” said Evans. “My family and I moved out here from Kansas City in June. I had hopes of doing something like this in the future but to do it in our first year is just amazing.

“The kids did it. I didn’t come out here not knowing I had these good players. I watched Jana (Van Gytenbeek) play but a lot of these kids didn’t play a whole lot last year. We said it all year, one team, one goal, we’re going to find a way.”

Airport noise-abatement efforts recognized nationally STAFF REPORT

Two top officials at Centennial Airport received the UC Davis Aviation Noise and Emissions Symposium’s Walt Gillfillan Award.

Dylan Heberlein, the airport’s senior planner and noise specialist; and Mike Fronapfel, director of planning and development, were given the award, which honors symposium founder Walt Gillfillan and recognizes exemplary achievements and contributions to noise abatement in aviation by an individual or organization, according to a news release.

“This award has been a long time in the making,” Heberlein said in the release. “We just happen to be here to receive the award, but there’s more than 25 years of effort that’s gone into making Centennial Airport’s noiseabatement program what it is, today.”

Heberlein and Fronapfel oversee one of the most proactive noise programs in the nation, managing as many as 13,000 noise complaints in a single year, responding to seven city councils and two county boards of commissioners, the release said.

Heberlein credits airport staff, both past and present, for helping forge a program that strives to understand aircraft noise from the community’s perspective.

Formed in 2009, the Centennial Airport Community Noise Roundtable — which Walt Gillfillan had a hand in —

COURTESY PHOTO was created as a collaborative forum for local elected officials, appointed community representatives, airport staff, the FAA, the Colorado Division of Aeronautics and airport users to find ways to reduce and mitigate the impact of aircraft noise on surrounding communities.

Centennial Airport’s Fly Quiet Program, created in partnership with the roundtable, is an example of how the airport and communities work together. The voluntary noise abatement program has helped minimize the impact of aircraft noise through pilot education and awareness.

The award was presented March 4 in Jacksonville, Florida.

“We are honored to have been nominated and selected, but this award is not just about us. It’s about the synergy among all of our stakeholders,” Fronapfel said. “And that’s something we’re truly happy to make some noise about.”
