Brewability, a brewery that hires workers with intellectual and developmental disabilities, hosts “Celtic Thursdays” from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Thursday, when different local residents come to the brewery and perform Celtic music. On Feb. 20, John Hammer, Ian Hawkins and Brian Simpson performed at the brewery.

Brewability took over the former Brew on Broadway location at 3445 S. Broadway last fall. Its hours are 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Short-term rental rules approved Englewood council OKs regulations, zoning to legalize operations

It has been a long process for Englewood City Council and city staff, but two ordinances that pave the way for short-term rental legality in Englewood have been passed.

Englewood City Council voted 5-2 in favor of an ordinance that will regulate short-term rentals, with Councilmembers Rita Russell and Dave Cuesta voting against the measure at a Feb. 18 council meeting. The other ordinance council passed was related to land use for the service that allows homeowners to rent out their home or a room in their home for 29 days or less at a stretch. C-470 project moving toward completion, CDOT says Toll lanes expected to open in spring, project to be finished by summer

The C-470 Express Lanes project is slated to be completed this summer -- a year behind schedule.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Construction on C-470 is nearly finished.

The years-long C-470 Express Lanes Project, which will add tolled lanes along the busy highway, is scheduled to be completed this summer, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT. That’s about a year after the original expected completion date, and four years after the project began in 2016.

CDOT placed the project’s contractor, a joint venture of Flatiron Construction and AECOM, in default last summer after repeated delays and what CDOT called misleading updates.

“CDOT’s priority is getting this completed as quickly and safely as possible so we can bring it to the traveling public,” said Tamara Rollison, a spokeswoman for CDOT. “You’ve probably noticed whenever you’re out there, there’s work taking place, including weekend and night closures.”

at least one, and in some places two toll lanes to each direction of the heavily congested corridor between I-25 and Wadsworth Boulevard. Motorists could save up to 18 minutes if traveling the full 12-mile length of the lanes, according to CDOT estimates.

Tolls could range as high as $6.60 for a full-length westbound trip during afternoon rush hour, according to CDOT documents. The high end for eastbound travel could be $4.85 during morning rush hour. Tolls will be lower in off-peak times and for motorists only traveling partway. The goal is to keep traffic moving at least 45 mph at all times.

The toll lanes are expected to be complete sometime in the spring, Rol-

lison said, and motorists will be able to use them for free for a few months while crews finalize installation and testing of tolling equipment.

Tolls will be assessed much like they are on E-470 east of I-25, Rollison said, utilizing license plate readers that will send a bill to the driver’s home. Drivers can also buy electronic passes that are good on all the state’s toll roads.

The remaining work is primarily paving, lane striping and signage installation, Rollison said.

In the meantime, CDOT is levying fines of $51,000 a day against Flatiron and AECOM for the behind-schedule work, Rollison said.

“We like these projects finished within a certain time frame,” Rolli-

son said. “We’ve been exercising our recourse as laid out in our contract with them.”

The project’s total cost is still in the neighborhood of $276 million, Rollison said. About $10 million of that is from Douglas County, and an additional $110 million came from state and federal funding.

Flatiron and AECOM are “working to safely expeditiously complete the project,” said Michael Swenson, a spokesman for Flatiron.

“We’ve been working with CDOT on this all the way through,” Swenson said. “We’ve focused significant resources on the project.”

Swenson declined to answer if the contractors have worked to change or improve their methods since being placed in default.

The project’s completion will bring welcome additional capacity to the local transportation grid, said Keith Reester, Littleton’s director of public works.

Still, Reester said, “you can’t build your way out of congestion.”

“You can, however, add capacity while you look at longer-term solutions: mode changes, shorter trips, working to help people live closer to their jobs and things like that,” Reester said. “You’re not going to get thousands of people to decide to stop driving tomorrow.”

Neighborhood Resources Program coordinator describes goals of new approach

Englewood has its eyes on establishing neighborhoods in the city, and it has a neighborhood resources coordinator to help carry out the process.

Madeline Hinkfuss has been hired

by Englewood to be the city’s neighborhood resources coordinator. Her role was created as the city is kicking off its new Neighborhood Resources Program.

The program’s mission is to build stronger and more inclusive neighborhoods in the city. Hinkfuss found that 56% of Englewood residents have lived in Englewood for five years or less — creating an opportunity for the city to try to create a sense of belonging for its residents through the Neighborhood Resources Program.

The program was created because of the high percentage of new residents, limited community engagement in city policy development and a sense of disconnectedness of neighbors to one another and the larger community, according to city documents.

In the coming months, the program will work on identifying neighborhood leaders and neighborhood boundaries, registering neighborhoods with the city and building neighborhood groups. There are currently not any neighborhood boundaries in Englewood.

Hinkfuss answered questions about herself, the program and more.

Tell us about your current role and background.

I previously worked for the city of Grandview (Missouri) in their Parks and Recreation Department and most recently in member services at the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds. I graduated from the University of Missouri with a Parks, Recreation and Tourism degree.

With Englewood’s rich history and all the positive changes occurring in the community, the city wants to ensure neighborhoods in Englewood continue to be vibrant and connected, which is why the city is launching the new Neighborhood Resources Program.

In this new role, I will collaborate with residents and community members to build and organize neighborhood groups. I will encourage neighbors to become active residents and help determine the future of their neighborhood. Essentially, my role serves as a resource for residents.

How can building stronger and more inclusive neighborhoods benefit not only the city, but residents as well?

The program is centered on creating neighborhood groups that bring neighbors together to create a sense of belonging for neighbors, and a connection of residents to their neighborhoods and the Englewood community.

Organizing or being a part of a neighborhood group can make neighborhoods stronger and neighbors feel like they are a part of a community.

As residents organize their neighborhoods, residents can expect the opportunity to get to know their neighbors.

Bennet: Take politics out of health care Fresh off failed presidential bid, senator says high cost of living weighs on Americans

Sen. Michael Bennet called defeating President Trump in the fall election a vital task.

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet isn’t running for president, but that doesn’t mean he’s done taking on President Trump.

Bennet, who dropped out of the Democratic presidential primary in early February after a lackluster showing in the New Hampshire primary, spoke to about 100 constituents at a town hall meeting in south Jefferson County on Feb. 18.

“This is the most important election of our lives,” Bennet said. “When you think about the obligation of a citizen of a republic, particularly when we have a president who doesn’t believe in democracy, the separation of powers, the freedom of the press or the independence of the judiciary, that’s a moment when citizenship really matters.”

Though Bennet said he has not yet chosen a candidate to endorse in the primary, or even if he will endorse one, he said he would back whomever the nominee is because he feels voting Trump out of office is vital.

“There’s a concern that our democracy is at risk and the rule of law is being jeopardized,” Bennet said.

“When I ask people why they voted for Donald Trump, I get a similar answer: ‘We wanted to blow the place up.’ Well, congratulations, you achieved your objective. But what are we going to do for our kids and our place in the world?”

Bennet condemned Trump’s treatment of border security, saying his mother, a Holocaust survivor, was horrified by the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from their parents who crossed illegally at the southern border.

“She said she saw herself in those

kids,” Bennet said. “She knows what it does to a person over a lifetime. I don’t think our country is built on nativist hostility or anti-immigrant sentiment.

Beyond presidential politics, Bennet said he hears similar concerns at numerous town halls: citizens saying they can’t afford some combination of housing, health care, higher education and early childhood education. Many are worried their children will end up worse-off financially than their parents.

Bennet outlined a series of policy proposals he said would help address the issues: a program to ensure high school graduates get their diploma with a year of community college under their belts, an end to tax cuts for the wealthy paired with a low-income tax cut, lower interest rates on federal student loans, a focus on reducing the cost of college and developing a public option for health care.

What is the biggest value of having a Neighborhood Resources Program?

When connections are established among neighbors, a variety of benefits can be seen over time.

Connectedness among a neighborhood can reduce crime, improve property maintenance, reduce recovery time after natural disasters and lead to stronger advocacy for needed improvements, such as parks or alley maintenance. Research also shows that a sense of belonging in neighborhoods creates positive health outcomes for residents, compared to individuals that have no sense of belonging or connection to others.

What can Englewood expect by establishing neighborhoods in the city?

Relationships between Englewood and neighborhood groups will strengthen the city. Local government

Two constituents who commented on health care at the meeting backed up Bennet’s views.

“We don’t trust the government for health care,” said Jo Douglas, an osteopathic doctor in Littleton. “I don’t know how we got on the Bernie march of everything for everybody.

It’s ridiculous. We’ll go bankrupt.”

George Sechrist said he was frustrated after his wife’s recent emergency room visit that it took months to get an itemized bill.

“The free market should be allowed to work in health care,” Sechrist said.

“Let’s see some competition.”

Bennet touted his plan, that he calls “Medicare X,” which centers around a public option.

“I hope we can take politics out of the health care debate,” Bennet said.

“There’s a huge opportunity here, because of how much money we’re wasting today.”

Bennet said he hasn’t yet decided how or if he’ll work to assist the campaign to unseat fellow Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner, who faces a tough reelection campaign this fall, though he has endorsed former governor John Hickenlooper to challenge Gardner.

Bennet said while his presidential campaign didn’t get much traction, which he attributes to starting late and being shut out of Democratic party debates, he’s glad to be home.

“Town halls are a big part of a senator’s job,” he said. “It feels good to be back in Colorado.”

The neighborhood resources program is a volunteer-based program. If residents are interested in building a neighborhood group, the city is looking for neighborhood group leaders to begin the building process. Group leaders will form a group of neighbors to kick-start the group and determine neighborhood boundaries.

Gardner: ‘I know we can do better’ on mental health Senator, behavioral health students hold roundtable at Cherry Creek campus

For those skeptical that the federal government affects their daily lives, U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner’s conversation with some metro area high school students may offer some hope.

In Colorado, “we are losing a person every seven hours to suicide, and I know we can do better,” Gardner, a Yuma Republican, said at a Feb. 19 roundtable on mental health at the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus in the Centennial area.

The senator listened to students’ experiences with programs at the career-technical education campus and talked about filling a shortage of behavioral health workers.

The Innovation Campus, where high school students in the Cherry Creek district come to learn skills in several trades — from construction management to cybersecurity — is where students like Adrianna Fitzgerald are preparing for jobs in behavioral health.

Health care professionals often end up burned out from their work, and the Innovation Campus’ program teaches students how to care for themselves to prevent exhaustion.

“Not only are we helping others, we’re helping ourselves,” said Fitzgerald, a Smoky Hill senior.

The campus works hand-in-hand with HealthONE, a network of Denver-area hospitals and clinics, on its health curriculum, according to campus principal Mark Morgan. It’s a partnership that gives students a shot at transitioning straight into the industry after graduation.

“A big part (of addressing mental health) is the workforce,” Gardner

Tackling the health workforce shortage is one policy area Gardner has recently targeted with a Senate bill he and Sen. Kamala Harris, a California Democrat, introduced in September.

The Mental Health Professionals Workforce Shortage Loan Repayment Act would authorize a loan repay-

ment program for those who agree to practice in areas with a shortage of mental health professionals. The system would repay one-sixth of a worker’s educational debt for each year of service, up to $250,000 over six years, according to a news release from Gardner’s office.

‘Shiki Dreams’ offers escape from world Immersive exhibit open until May

Shiki Dreams is meant to be a respite from the everyday world.

Shiki Dreams is a pop-up immersive art installation located at 2219 E. 21st Ave., which is in the northeast vicinity of Denver’s City Park West neighborhood.

The 1,200-square-foot art exhibit creates an imaginative step into the world of Shiki, the spiritual yeti guide and leader of the Spirits of the Forest from Natura. It explores the dreams of this wise spirit in a multi-sensory experience.

“We’re thrilled to provide an opportunity for the public to continue its journey alongside Shiki through this one-of-a-kind pop-up experience in our studio space,” said Eric Jaenike, co-founder of Prismajic, the creative group presenting the exhibit. “Visitors are invited to explore a journey of magic and discovery in an interactive exhibit incorporating augmented reality and digital technologies.”

Each room in the exhibit represents a different dream sequence, featuring a variety of art mediums created by more than 20 Colorado artists.

Some Democrats fear fallout from Sanders atop ticket Members of Congress are concerned that blue gains could see setback

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ robust start in the race for the presidential nomination is triggering alarm among congressional Democrats, with many warning that a ticket headed by the self-declared socialist could be devastating to the party’s chances of winning the Senate and holding the House in November.

In anxious huddles around the Capitol, apprehensive Democrats are sharing their worries that Sanders’ socialist label and unyielding embrace of controversial proposals like “Medicare for All” and the Green New Deal will repel voters in the affluent, moderate districts that flipped House control in 2018 and in closely divided states where Republican senators are vulnerable.

The Vermont independent narrowly won New Hampshire on Feb. 11 on the heels of a strong showing in Iowa and is widely seen as a front-runner, along with former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

“I’m a proud capitalist,” said freshman Rep. Ben McAdams, D-Utah, in pointed contrast with Sanders. McAd-

ams, who is supporting former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and whose Salt Lake City district will be among the toughest for Democrats to defend, said having a liberal like Sanders atop his party’s ticket “would probably give me more opportunities to show my independence” from the party.

Another freshman from a competitive district, Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-New Jersey, said Democrats need a presidential nominee who “doesn’t scare all those future former Republicans more than Trump scares them.” And while acknowledging that Republicans plan to tar all Democrats with the socialist label, “There’s one candidate for whom that would not be a lie.”

Rep. Dina Titus, DNevada, who backs the candidacy of former Vice President Joe Biden, warned a group of Democratic voters this week in Carson City, Nevada, that with Sanders atop the ticket, “you’re not going to take back the Senate. There’s not any way, because everybody’s going to be tarred with the same brush. We will probably lose seats in the House.”

Private conversation cuts to chase In private conversations, other Democrats are more succinct. One

House Democrat said colleagues from swing districts are scared by the prospects of a Sanders nomination, while another said moderates are increasingly concerned that a Sanders candidacy would devastate their prospects for winning the White House and retaining the House. The lawmakers insisted on anonymity to describe private conversations.

Democrats’ jitters have Republicans rubbing their hands in delight.

“It’s every Republican’s dream come true,” Rep. Tom Cole, R-Oklahoma, a former leader of the House GOP’s campaign committee, said of a possible Sanders nomination.

Republicans face an uphill fight in capturing control of the House, which Democrats lead 232-197, with one independent and five vacancies. The GOP controls the Senate 53-47 and is favored to retain its majority.

Biden supporters are happy to use apprehension about Sanders’ impact on the party’s strength in Congress as a tool for drumming up support.

Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif., who’s endorsed Biden, said if Sanders were nominated, Democrats from moderate districts “might actually have to run away from our nominee to get elected.” And he added, “It’s highly unlikely that Bernie Sanders will moderate his views, either.”

Congressional Democrats have little to gain by openly disparaging the man who could well be their presidential nominee, and they say they’re uncertain what they could do that would be effective. Any move to derail his candidacy that could be traced back to them would undoubtedly enrage Sanders and his impassioned supporters and risk the fury that split the party in 2016, when some Sanders backers never supported Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee.

Underscoring a reluctance to speak critically of Sanders, Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Illinois, chairwoman of House Democrats’ campaign arm, sidestepped questions about how his nomination would affect her candidates’ prospects. “We have a long way to go before we know who our nominee is,” she said.

Asked how many nervous lawmakers have expressed their worries about Sanders to her, Bustos paused for four seconds before answering, “We have discussions about the nominee but, you know, it runs the gamut.”

While many Democrats are reluctant to openly express dismay about Sanders, members of the House have spoken with their feet.

According to the website fivethirtyeight.com, Sanders has endorsements from only seven House members, all members of the progressive caucus from safely Democratic districts. Biden, in contrast, has backing from 41 House members, and has made a point of touting support from seven lawmakers from swing dis-

tricts. Bloomberg, who hopes to poach Biden’s position as the moderate alternative to Sanders, has racked up 11 endorsements from House lawmakers, five of whom occupy swing seats.

Progressives dispute concerns Progressives argue the fears are overblown. Republicans tried to tie Democrats to socialism and liberal causes like Medicare for All during the 2018 campaign, they note, yet Democrats won a resounding majority in the House. And they argue that nominating Sanders could change the electorate in ways that help the party.

“They don’t want somebody that sells out,” said Sanders backer Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Michigan, a member of the “squad” of young liberal freshmen. She added, “Please don’t talk about only persuading Trumpers and independents” to be open to an alternative candidate. “How about persuading the Democrats that haven’t been engaged?”

“The single most important thing for Democrats to take back the Senate is turnout,” said Mike Lux, a liberal strategist who supports Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren in the presidential race. “We have to have a highly energized Democratic base turnout, a lot of young people coming out, voting not just in the presidential race but further down the ballot.”

Yet Sanders’ agenda is far from shared. Several top-tier Democratic Senate recruits, such as former astronaut Mark Kelly in Arizona, former state Sen. Cal Cunningham in North Carolina and former Gov. John Hickenlooper in Colorado, have explicitly distanced themselves from core Sanders positions like Medicare for All. Hickenlooper, the likely Democratic nominee against Republican Sen. Cory Gardner, targeted Sanders during his own brief bid for the party’s presidential nomination last year.

At a Democratic debate last summer, Hickenlooper warned that Sanders’ program would be “a disaster” at the ballot box.

“If you force Americans to make these radical changes,” Hickenlooper said, “they’re not going to go along.”

Gardner, widely considered the most endangered Republican senator, has been openly pining for Sanders to be the nominee. “In 2018, Cory said `the most dangerous thing to happen in America in the 2016 presidential election was Bernie Sanders’ normalization of socialism,’” Gardner campaign spokesman Jerrod Dobkin said. “Two years later, Cory’s been proven right.”

Democrats skeptical of Sanders stressed that the nominating process has just begun.

Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama, who is considered the most endangered Democratic Senate incumbent this year, has endorsed Biden, a longtime friend.

He said he wouldn’t play “what-if games” about the top of the ticket and how it might affect his chances in deep-red Alabama.

“I still think that Biden is going to be the nominee,” Jones said. “I still think that moderate voice that’s out there is going to ultimately carry.”

The South Metro Denver Chamber has named a new chief executive officer. Jeff Keener, a chamber board member and owner of a marketing firm, replaces Robert Golden, who resigned in late 2019.

“As we approach the chamber’s 100-year anniversary, we’re excited to gain someone as passionate about the business community as Jeff Keener,” Christie Lee, the chamber’s board chair, said in a news release. “It’s an exciting time for the SMDC and we look forward to Keener’s leadership, especially as he helps evolve our best practices to reflect the growing business dynamics in the south metro Denver region.”

The chamber is poised to grow in 2020 and the years ahead thanks to a strong board and strong economy, especially in the south metro Denver area,

Keener said in the release.

“People join the chamber to be fully part of the community,” Keener said. “I’m committed to making sure that we meet our members’ needs so that their desire to be involved in their community is satisfied. I appreciate our chamber’s important role: we are a critical nucleus for our various communities in the thriving south metro area.”

Keener owns JMB Marketing, a consultancy that Keener provides businesses support in the sales and marketing arenas. Keener was the winner of the chamber’s Leadership in Motion Award in 2012. He is a former councilman for the Town of Breckenridge and a former member of the board of directors for Colorado Ski Country USA. Keener has always been an active member of his community, including stints volunteering with the Littleton hockey and soccer associations, and with the Arapahoe High School lacrosse team.

“I think (short-term rentals) give every citizen of Englewood options of what they can do with the property they own.

I think that is good for our citizens as a whole, especially with the housing prices the way they are,” said Englewood City Councilmember Joe Anderson. The median sale price for single-family homes in Englewood in 2019 was $428,250, according to the Denver Metro Association of Realtors.

“It gives (residents) the option to generate some additional revenue off of the property they invested in,” he added.

With the passing of the land-use ordinance, Englewood short-term rental operators can operate their service in single unit residential; low, mid density single and multi-dwelling residential; mixed use low, medium density residential, limited office; and mixed use medical, office, high density residential limited retail zones. Short-term rentals will be allowed in those zone districts starting April 1.

“It will be allowing commercial businesses in every single zone of the city. I do not think that’s wise,” said Russell.

She said she believes short-term rentals in Englewood are going to bring unintended consequences.

Englewood will regulate short-term rentals by requiring residents who host the service to apply for an operating permit via application. Along with the application, short-term rental operators will have to pay a fee and have their prop-

erty inspected. Operators also must supply a scale floor plan of their property and a plan showing parking areas for the property. An Englewood Sales and Use Tax License and an Englewood Lodging License will also be needed for residents who want to operate a short-term rental service.

Under the regulation ordinance, short-term rental operators will only be allowed to offer rentals at their primary residence. Additionally, short-term rentals will have to comply with safety, noise and property maintenance provisions.

One parking space for each rented bedroom must be planned out for short-term rental services.

To enforce the regulations, an enforcement officer will have the right to access short-term rental properties if there is a reasonable suspicion of any violation. The enforcement officer will issue notices and orders, summons and complaints for prosecution to Englewood Municipal Court.

Englewood City Council tabled another short-term rental ordinance last October due to language that would’ve allowed accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to be used as short-term rentals. This time around, ADUs were not part of the regulation ordinance.

Englewood Mayor Linda Olson had previously spoken out last October against ADUs being used as short-term rentals.

But as of February, she has changed her mind.

“I’m disappointed that we don’t have ADUs in (the regulation ordinance) after rethinking that for myself, but hopefully in the future we’ll be able to figure that out if it is something that wants to come back forward,” said Olson.

Life without coffee is ... well ... well, it’s bad

ach credited God. Raymond Chandler refused to expedite the screenplay for “The Blue Dahlia” unless he was permitted to drink alcohol and to drink heavily.

I depend upon hot, black coffee — lots of it —to write.

QUIET Without hot, black coffee, I am at a loss DESPERATION for, uh, something.

Recent periodontal surgery means no hot, black coffee for two weeks.

The impact of this will undoubtedly have an impact on my impact.

There are no hot foods for two weeks Craig Marshall either.

Smith That’s manageable, but I have learned that foods that are generally served hot should not be served cold.

Cold macaroni and cheese is not very comforting. Neither are scrambled eggs or mashed potatoes.

There are no Peanut M&Ms for two weeks and that’s another hardship. I pretend they are vitamins and take a fistful daily.

I have to eat on the left side of my mouth. When the right side of my mouth has healed, Dr. Kim will repeat the procedure on the left side of my mouth.

That will mean two more weeks of abstinence.

I have learned something else that’s very important: namely, that time goes by.

No: It gallops by.

It’s another Olympics year. It’s another presidential election year.

Two weeks will come and go, then another post-operation period without coffee will come and go, and it will be summer, then fall, then 2021 before I know it.

And I will be back on the scalding nectar made from coffee beans, without which my similes are as flat as a board and dull as dullness.

The story about Chandler and the screenplay sounds like someone made it up, but it’s true.

Chandler was a heavy drinker.

How he was able to drink and write is incomprehensible. I’ve tried.

He was offered more money to finish the script, but insisted on alcohol. Chandler explained the drinking wouldn’t be a problem, but the aftermath would be. A doctor and nurses were nearby.

The irony is he had to put words in the mouth of Veronica Lake, whom he referred to as “Moronica.”

A further irony is that Lake’s death at the age of 50 was, in part, attributed to alcohol abuse.

Innumerable composers, artists, writers, and actors have depended on a substance for inspiration or survival as creators.

King said he “barely remembers” writing “Cujo” in 1981.

Competition — earning and learning our way to success

W

hen it comes to competitive events, I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy a close game as opposed to a rout, even when it may mean the team that I am rooting for has a chance of losing. You may understand this or feel this way too. A WINNING blowout of any kind WORDS and in any type of competition loses my interest pretty quickly.

Give me a good buzzer-beater, extra innings, a last-second Hail Mary or field goal, or a 40foot putt on the 18th hole to win a chamMichael Norton pionship any day.

Here’s the interesting thing. Although many of us enjoy the thrill and excitement of a close game, when it comes to our personal lives and careers, we want the easy wins.

As I was having this conversation with a buddy of mine, and as we talked about some of the easy wins we have enjoyed together and some of the really close calls, we agreed that although it was nice to cruise in with another win at times, it was the competition and energy of winning the close ones that gave us both a greater sense of gratification.

“Put me in coach, I am ready to play today …” - John Fogerty Every time I hear that song it inspires me to compete. And compete in anything, the game of life, the game of work, any game, just put me in coach, I want to play, and I want to play today.

To compete at anything, and to succeed at the highest level, requires work. And I am not just talking about competitive sports. The business landscape gets more and more competitive each and every day. So when we do practice and work at our craft, whatever it may be, and when we win, the victory feels so much better and tastes so much sweeter.

Knowing that we earned it carries so much more meaning than having something given to us, doesn’t it?

Many of my friends and clients are in professional sales roles.

They will certainly share that they would never turn down a “bluebird” opportunity, meaning a deal that comes in that they hadn’t really worked for or expected. However, when we start sharing sales stories and winning the close ones, we can all feel the energy shift and the excitement building as if we were still in the process. The feeling of winning gives way to the sensation of being in the battle. We celebrate with a “cheers” for what we have accomplished and encourage one another as we prepare for the next opportunity.

Just like a blowout of a game could bring a case of boredom, a lack of competition and competitive spirit draws us closer to complacency and mediocrity. Colin Powell said it well when he stated: “The healthiest competition occurs when average people win by putting in above-average ef-

Holidays are over — it’s tax season

ime flies. The holidays are a brief memory, winter is more than half over and we’re looking forward to spring. With spring comes the deadline for filing your tax return. We are currently still under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. Based on that tax law change, nearly 29 million more households will be better off takring the standard deduction instead of itemizing.* Collecting all of your medical, charitable, job expenses, property tax and mortgage information is very time-consuming. And now, if you are better off taking the standard deduction, that information might not even be used. You should still collect the data just to make sure and it is also a good exercise to understand where some of your expenses go.

You may find you are very close to the standard deduction limit, which is $24,400 for Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) for 2019. If that is the case, you might consider bunching your deductions every other year. So, for example, you could take the standard deduction for 2019, then in 2020, double up your charitable contributions. This could

allow you to use up the $10,000 limit with property taxes and state taxes paid during the year. If you don’t have a paycheck where you are paying Colorado state tax during the year, and FINANCIAL you are not paying STRATEGIES Colorado estimated payments, there may be room to double up on your property taxes.

This means that in December you can call the county and get an estimate of what your property Patricia Kummer taxes will be for the following year and pay all or some of them in 2020. Then, you may be able to itemize on your 2020 tax filing and take the standard deduction the following year. The standard deduction will increase by $200 for single filers and $400 for joint filers for 2020.

Tax time is a good time to consider updating your financial plan as well.

You are already collecting the W-2, tax withholding, investment sales, dividends and small business revenue and expenses. You might as well finish updating your plan at the same time.

Why do we need to repeal Columbus Day in Colorado?

F

ew people know that Colorado was the original state to establish Columbus Day as a state holiday. So decades later, why would we be moving to repeal it in the Legislature now?

There are close to 100 organizations with thousands of people who want to eliminate the day as a state holiday. Why? GUEST In seminary, as I have COLUMN been taking courses in American Indian history, culture, and worldviews and have been involved with the local Native community, I now know why this is so important to do.

Most of us going through school in the Linda Newell United States were taught that America was “discovered”

by Christopher Columbus and that he and his crew made friends with the Indians. Well, it turns out, this is false.

In fact, historians have proven that Columbus actually landed in the Bahamas. When he arrived, there were already more than 100 million Indigenous peoples living in the Americas.

It also turns out that Columbus was not such a good guy after all, let alone a hero who deserves a holiday named after him. Prior to his voyage abroad, he was engaged in the African slave

trade on behalf of Portugal. Then once he arrived here, he and his followers began the process of enslaving, kidnapping and killing the Indigenous by establishing the encomienda system that enslaved them and forced them to produce gold for Columbus’ enterprise, under penalty of torture and/or death. It has also been revealed that they snatched babies from Indian mothers and killed them, preventing their population from growing.

The Columbus Day holiday has been historically viewed by many as a celebration of Italian-American pride, which has stopped a repeal of the holiday. Yet, as some have now realized the accurate history and the harmful effects of the holiday’s name on their Native American sisters and brothers, the communities have gotten together with a compromise. The replacement will be to instead honor a true Italian-American heroine in Colorado history, Frances Cabrini, who helped establish 67 charitable institutions including hospitals, schools, and orphanages. The current bill will repeal Colorado’s designation of Columbus Day as a state holiday and replace it with Cabrini Day. The conception of Cabrini Day is a compromise collaboration between leaders in the Indigenous communities, Italian communities, and anti-racist stakeholders. This SEE NEWELL, P31

Long term capital gains (LTCG) — those assets held for more than 12 months — qualify for the special longterm capital gains rate. Joint filers can earn up to $80,000 taxable income this year and pay zero on LTCG. Joint filers over the $80,000 limit will still only

pay 15% on LTCG up to $496,600 of taxable income. These are relatively low tax rates for the ability to trim profits and potentially reduce the overall risk in your portfolio.

Gary McNee Gary McNee, 80, of Littleton Colorado died on February 14 after a heroic struggle with heart and lung disease. He is survived by his wife Carolyn McNee (married 1962), daughter Jody Jamison (Matt) and granddaughters Payton and Kelsey, daughter Marne Katsanis (John) and granddaughters Madeline and Sawyer, sisters Kara Brockschink (John) and Loralea Francis. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Mildred McNee and sister Connie Swartzendruber.

Gary was born on October 28, 1939 in Cedar Rapids Iowa. He graduated from Norway High School, where he was active in 4H: raising, showing, and presenting. He received a BA from Cornell College and a MA in counseling from the University of Iowa He retired after 30 years as a coun-

selor at Littleton High School, making permanent impact on many students’ personal and academic lives. He received a service award from the Arapahoe-Douglas Area Vocational school and was a representative in the Littleton Education Association.

His passion was cars: restoring them, driving them, reading about them, and in recent years YouTubing them. He belonged to the Mountain Plains Corvette Club. He was truly a “car person”. He also enjoyed World War II history, traveling, his dogs, and many events with his children and grandchildren.

ithin a single week, dozens of regulars find their way to the 2300 block of Arapahoe and Curtis streets in Denver.

Steven Barth, a jazz keyboard player, leaves the homeless shelter he’s been staying at for eight months, headed to a weekly dance group at the St. Francis Center, a daytime shelter on Curtis Street.

Ashley Anderson and Paul Laurendine, a married couple who met at the day shelter, also make their way to Curtis Street each week, drawn to the dance group where they first bonded.

Richard Beck, an artist who goes by the name Gonzo, walks from his Denver home to the RedLine Contemporary Art Center on Arapahoe Street — where, having once slept behind the building each night, he has since accepted a position as studio coordinator.

Every week, these individuals are drawn to the arts programs that happen to run in the back-toback buildings. On Tuesday and Saturday afternoons, RedLine invites aspiring artists to the Reach Studio at 2350 Arapahoe St. And on Thursday mornings, ballet company Wonderbound holds a dance group at the St. Francis Center, 2323 Curtis St. The Denver arts groups, which each began within the last decade, seek to serve people experiencing homelessness in the metro area.

More than anything, participants say the programs are about momentarily leaving behind the negative to embrace the positive.

Artist Vanessa Constanti has four paintings featured in RedLine’s current exhibition. Having previously faced housing insecurity, “this is the first time I’ve been able to have an outlet for my art,” the artist said.

“We’ve been coming to this for years. It’s been our getaway,” Anderson said of herself and her husband.

Participants also say that programs like these are few and far between.

“I wish it would last longer.

There’s not much else to do,” said Barth, who often sits on the edge

of the dance floor in the St. Francis Center’s clothing room, using drumsticks to keep the beat while others are dancing.

“It feels good to move,” he said.

“It makes your heart beat.”

Programs’ purposes While the programs seek to achieve a common goal, each one

approaches that goal differently.

The Pari Passu dance program — named after the Latin term for “equal step” — specifically engages those served by the St. Francis Center. Every Thursday, participants decide how to spend the hour, whether that means dancing together or simply discussing music, said group coordinator Heather Sutton.

“This is a population that is told a lot what they can and can’t do, so we try to meet whatever the demand is that day,” Sutton said.

“One of the first things people lose when they’re experiencing financial hardship is access to the arts. It’s important for us to provide that.”

Directly after the hour wraps up at the center, Sutton holds another group at the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, 2111 Champa St., Denver.

Sutton also coordinates for group members to occasionally watch Wonderbound dance rehearsals or attend local shows.

Pari Passu participant Debra Ann added that for her, the program is more than a chance to enjoy the arts; it’s also an opportunity to encourage those who are facing the same hardships that she is.

‘They stole him out of jail’ Local author’s book shares story of last racial lynching in South Carolina

In May 1947 the courthouse in Greenville, South Carolina was the site for a trial that made national news and asked the question: Was a lynching possibly legal under any circumstances?

Littleton author Will Gravely, a native of Pickens, the town near Greenville where the lynching victim had been abducted from jail, was 7 at the time of the incident and was unaware of it then. He went on to teach history and religious history at the University of Denver. He decided to take an indepth look at the scene and the ensuing story — involving court records (there was no transcript of the trial), files of local and some national newspapers and magazines, and conversations with locals who remembered ...

record the scene for newspapers and magazines — including British author Rebecca West, aka Dame Cecily Isabel Fairfield DBE, who filed stories to the New Yorker.

Gravely is scheduled to talk about this story and presumably, his process in telling it, at the Littleton Museum at 7 p.m. on March 5.

A farmer had found 48-year-old taxi driver Thomas Watson Brown injured and bleeding on the night of Feb. 15, 1947 — a Saturday — and called for help. Brown was transferred to the local hospital in critical condition, and died two days later.

Investigation on the night of Feb. 15 found tracks from Brown’s cab led to Tessie Earle’s home, where police found a gun — the probable weapon used — a jacket with stains still showing after washing and shoes that fitted the tracks. They belonged to a 24-yearold black man, Willie Earle, who was arrested and locked in the Pickens jail.

By the day after the attack, other cab drivers had convened and an angry mob started talking about taking Earle out of the jail cell. A caravan of 31 men arrived at the jail and pushed their way to Earle’s cell, where they grabbed him and went to a pre-chosen site to “interrogate” the young man.

Earle was shot, stabbed and bludgeoned, with the dead body left on the ground as the men scattered. Soon after the body was found, the FBI entered the scene in addition to state and local law officers — although the FBI withdrew several days later.

Gravely spins a story of passions, mob psychology, individual portraits and rivalries — and a prevailing point of view that is not as evident today, although it does keep surfacing in some news reports...

The 31 men were tried as a group and much of Gravely’s writing describes the words and actions that ensued — the judge’s rulings, the steamy, crowded courtroom — as well as profiles of many of the mob members.

(A list at the end of the book tells age, family status, education and occupation of the group, which adds to an overall image of the community.)

The writing is crisp and colorful and keeps a reader turning pages to see what’s next. (It’s hard to put it down and go tend to whatever else is pending!)

We are told that Bemis Library has a copy in its collection and Gravely says the University of South Carolina publication is available at Tattered Cover, Aspen Grove.

Tattered Cover will have copies for sale at the Littleton Museum lecture.

Gravely has also been talking at Sunday Forums at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Littleton.

“I like to lift people up. Instead of sitting out there alone, we can come here and have fellowship,” said Debra Ann, who asked that her last name not be used. “No matter what you’re going through, music’s good for your soul.”

Meanwhile, through its Reach Studio program, RedLine invites any artist to visit the studio and access the program’s workspace, storage space and materials.

Reach Studio also provides “professional development and opportunities to sell artwork,” said JC Futrell, RedLine’s education director.

Participants’ work is featured in permanent exhibitions at RedLine and Saint John’s Cathedral at 1350 N. Washington St., Denver, he said.

The studio’s core artists, who have regularly participated for six months, receive additional benefits including access to scholarships for the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design.

“This studio really means connection and it really means safety,” Futrell said. “I’ve got artists who tell me that before coming in here, they didn’t really see themselves as artists, and now they do.”

That’s been the case for Reach Studio coordinator Gonzo, who first came to the studio about a decade ago, hoping to leave behind a life of financial hardship and crime, he said.

“I came into this building trying not to be anybody anymore. The minute I’d leave here, there’d be drugs,

people who were addicted to things,” he said. “We’re always on the verge of being unsettled, but what’s kept me sane is consistency.”

Since joining the studio, he has accepted the coordinator position, sold numerous pieces and found stable housing, he said. He attributes the turnaround to his pursuit of an art career and says that, for many others, he’s seen the same transformation take place.

“I’ve created a whole new person,” he said. “I don’t do the things I used to do, and that’s what makes life

worth living.”

‘It saves your life’ Though many of the artists live within walking distance of the studio, some have a longer commute, coming in from the surrounding suburbs.

“We get artists from Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Englewood, Thornton — they come from all over to be in this space,” Futrell said.

Juannean Young, who left her job about two years ago to become an artist, drives to RedLine every week from Aurora, where she recently moved into a shared-living home.

Young and many of her fellow artists said that through the studio’s sales and connections, they feel they have started to make names for themselves in the art world.

Vanessa Constanti is one artist who’s found this success. In the past, the artist faced housing insecurity; she has since found stable housing, but she continues to visit the studio as she cares for her daughter, who has significant special needs, Constanti said.

In addition to selling artwork and being a part of exhibitions, the program provides something even more important, she said.

“When you’re dealing with special needs or housing insecurity, you’re never self-actualizing. You’re mired in just surviving,” she said. “This is the first time I’ve been able to have an outlet for my art. I think most of us will use the same terms: It saves your life.”

Bobby LeFebre, state poet laureate, to speak at ACC Poet seeks to elevate marginalized voices in free talk

Colorado’s Poet Laureate will speak at Arapahoe Community College on March 4, and he hopes he’s not the only one.

“My work lends itself to conversation,” said Bobby LeFebre, who was named the state’s poetic ambassador in 2019. “A lot of my work is focused on cultural and social issues. I want people to love it and hate it.”

At 37, LeFebre is the state’s youngest-ever poet laureate, and the first person of color to hold the title. He said he hopes to use the position to focus on marginalized voices.

LeFebre said he’s not coming to ACC with a particular plan.

“It depends how I’m feeling that day or what’s going on in the world. Every poetry set is different. People in the audience influence it.”

LeFebre’s goals speak to poetry’s history, said ACC English professor Jamey Trotter, who is hosting the event as part of the Writers Studio program he spearheads with professor Andrea Mason.

“Poetry allows you to criticize conventions of poetry you wouldn’t otherwise,” Trotter said. “Some people see it as an elitist genre, but really it’s among the most accessible and ment of the donor pool.

LeFebre is also a good example for young poets, Trotter said, citing LeFebre’s degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver.

“He comes from a humble background,” Trotter said. “From a teacher’s standpoint, I can say, ‘This can happen to you if you work hard and care enough.’”

LeFebre said the time is right for young people looking to express themselves through poetry.

“There’s a resurgence of interest in poetry,” LeFebre said. “People are experiencing it in new ways. It should always be evolving as we and technology evolve. We relegated poetry to books, but we can find it in songs or old family recipes. It’s creating a connection between things that don’t seem to be connected. Poetry is a worldview. We’ll talk about whatever comes up.”

Rocky Mountain Train Show returns to Denver Families, enthusiasts invited to event stretching over two days STAFF REPORT

The largest train show west of the Mississippi chugs into Denver in March as a treat for families and train enthusiasts. Presented by the Rocky Mountain Division of the Train Collectors Association, the Rocky Mountain Train Show is larger than ever, now covering more than three acres.

The two-day show will feature more than 20 operating train layouts of different scales and sizes, manufacturer and hobby store displays, face-painting for children and more than 600 tables of vendors selling trains, books, paints, scenery material and everything you might need to set up your own spectacular model train.

This show also will feature how-to clinics, Thomas the Tank Engine displays, a free train ride for kids, lots of Legos and door prizes with family fun for all. Union Pacific Heritage Operations senior manager Ed Dickens will give a presentation on the Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy steam locomotive.

Nolan Arenado said he never went as far as to request a trade from the Colorado Rockies in the wake of feeling a “disrespect” from the club given that he was part of trade discussions this offseason, and the All-Star third baseman is ready to move forward despite frustrations with a quiet winter by his team.

“I’m in camp so that means we’re trying to win,” Arenado said, noting there were “a few times” he wasn’t sure he would be here this spring.

“But at the same time it’s still a business. You never know what could happen. At the end of the day I’m happy to be back.”
