A man who had been living in an Englewood motel is the suspect in what police say was the unprovoked killing of an RTD security officer. Joshua Cummings, 37, who had been living in the Holiday Motel on South Broadway for weeks, is accused of fatally shooting the security officer late on the night of Jan. 31 near Denver Union Station, a hub for buses and trains. Security camera footage helped police quickly find and arrest the suspected gunman. Police said on Feb. 1 that they were still looking for a motive in the attack. The armed Regional Transportation District officer, Scott Von Lanken of Loveland, was wearing a dark blue uniform similar to those worn by police. In case he was targeted because he was believed to be a police officer, Denver Police Chief Robert White said officers have been warned to remain vigilant. Cummings, who has ties to a variety of cities in Texas, most recently Austin, was charged with a misdemeanor over five years ago out of state, police Cmdr. Barb Archer said. SEE SLAYING, P19
