I care about Elbert County — its citizens Richardson and our future.

I first ran for this office because I felt positive change was needed — County leadership was in disarray, budget and finances were not receiving adequate attention, and citizens were not receiving the quality of service they deserved.

During this term in office we have secured our county’s financial future, setting aside over $5 million in stability and contingency funds, increased transparency and communication with all citizens, expanded citizen services, and have dug deeply into quantifying our county’s future needs so we can plan wisely.

I am running again because although I know I have helped move our county in a positive direction, there is more work to be done and continuity is important.

What makes you the best person for the job?

In a word, “experience.” There is a steep learning curve that comes with the job of Commissioner. Admittedly, there was a lot of learning in the first year in office. Three of us came to office at roughly the same time and just as we thought we were hitting our stride, we unexpectedly lost our county manager. The next six months allowed us to learn the inner workings of the county to a much higher level than most commissioners ever will. This grounding allowed us to respond rapidly and effectively to the situations we have faced since — the Forest Ridge Fire, the Bomb Cyclone, and now the COVID-19 pandemic while ensuring county services to the citizens are uninterrupted.

How should growth in the county be managed in the coming years?

It is no secret that Elbert County is growing. But, according to updated numbers from the office of the state demographer, that rate is considerably slower than was projected just for years ago. Q&A with Scott Lampman, write-in candidate for Elbert County commissioner, District 1 Party: Republican Contact: scottlampmanforcommissioner@gmail.com Occupation: I am a United States Air Force veteran and have worked in the defense industry for 36 years.

Following my military service, I joined Lockheed-Martin, Lampman where I served as an analyst and senior manager for 16 years. In 2008, I moved to a small DOD company, Analysis, Computing and Engineering (ACEs) where I served as an analyst and vice president of Colorado operations. My responsibilities included managing business growth, personnel, finance and security for the Colorado division. Throughout my career, I have held a security clearance with periodic background checks that include counter-intelligence and full-scope polygraphs, ensuring trust at the highest levels.

Where do you live?

After living in the Pinery (Parker, Douglas County) for 13 years, I have lived in Elizabeth since 2017.

Why are you seeking this office?

I decided to announce my campaign

for commissioner after witnessing what I felt was indifference to the wishes and concerns of the Elbert County residents regarding land use and water preservation issues. I was also troubled by the combative attitude towards state officials. I have the time, experience, and a desire to make a positive change for the county, so I am offering my services to all the residents of Elbert County. I believe together we can make positive contributions to county government.

What makes you the best person for the job?

I will bring honesty, integrity, and measured leadership to the commissioner position. I have no hidden agenda; I care about the people in the county and our rural way of life. My only objective is to bring transparency to the commissioner position, listening to residents of Elbert County, and working to find measured and sustainable solutions to the growth encroaching on our rural community. My knowledge and experience in leading people and managing million-dollar contracts provides me the necessary foundation to ensure our county taxpayer dollars are managed in a fiscally responsible way that bring a benefit to the taxpayers.

What drives growth? Nearly 90% of those who work outside the home commute from the county to work.

It has been said that, “Jobs drive growth and houses are where jobs go to sleep at night.” Almost all of our county’s growth has been driven by the job market in the metro Denver area. Though we have taken steps over the past four years to encourage economic activity in the county, our proximity to the metro will continue to be the primary

driver for the foreseeable future.

My focus as commissioner in regard to growth is ensuring we have common sense, practical regulations that recognize property rights, support conservation of our aquifer waters, leads to improvements in our local road networks — both capacity and quality and, wherever possible, levy on developers the infrastructure costs associated with the impacts of their developments.

What would be your biggest priority if reelected?

If entrusted with a second term — my goals remain unchanged: To serve the citizens of Elbert County honorably, professionally, and with a focus on preparing the county for a strong and vibrant future. The priority issues — plural as we can

How should growth in the town be managed in the coming years?

Growth should fit Elbert County rather than Elbert County fit growth. Growth should happen per the wishes of the residents of the county, not just a few developers and the few who benefit. Infrastructure needs to keep up with (not lag) the growth. Developers benefit the most from growth, and therefore they should provide the infrastructure needs of each new community (and not via Metro or Special District taxes).

What would be your biggest priority if elected?

Limiting growth to the wishes of the current residents, not a few developers. Listening to the residents

work on more than one thing at a time — are to continuously improve communication with citizens, conservation of our aquifer waters, improvements of roads, and financial position.

What else should voters know about you?

My military service has provided me with perspective. I have lived in many communities throughout the nation and around the world and we chose Elbert County as our forever home and the place to raise our daughter. After 13 moves in 23 years, this is where I will remain.

I am committed to public service.

What makes you the best choice for this office?

I am an experienced leader with no ties to corrupt special interests or Washington Politics.

I will tirelessly fight for the rights of rural Coloradans. For decades McCorkle paid for politicians have served the interests of Wall Street and the rich while average Americans have been left behind. We will champion a rural reinvestment Act, justly transition energy production, and create sustainable jobs. My opponent accepted more than $830,000 from one lobby group. I am the best choice because I am not part of the establishment and know we must get corruption and hence money out of politics.

A Coalition in the legislature and military leadership with enough power and influence to persuade “whole government action on climate change.” We need a new National Security Act of 2021 to restructure and stand up Federal Administrations in order to face the threats of this century. Designating climate change the number one national security threat and Congressionally tasking DOD and NASA with direct mission sets and global action plans, must be achieved.

impacted. The commissioner said, “no,” cut him off and moved to the next question.

What makes you the best person for the job?

I have years of serving the public in county government and understand how decisions we make today can affect the quality of life in this county for generations to come. Growth can either be a blessing or a curse for a county. Managed correctly and taking into consideration the vision of longtime residents, as well as being open to the possibilities brought by new ideas, this county can be a model.

Looking at the other counties we can see inspiration as well as cautionary tales.

Careful growth that does not destroy the very reasons we all chose to live here is my goal. Let’s keep the ability to hear the coyotes and to see the stars at night while adding good changes that actually add value for all of us and not just enrich the greedy.

How should growth in the county be managed in the coming years?

So far growth has not been managed at all. During the last real estate boom the BOCC was “open for business.” At that time they snatched up as many new home starter fees as they could and felt rich.

Apparently, they didn’t realize that all those new residents would expect many expensive services that the county infrastructure could not support. Law enforcement, water, schools, libraries and roads, were all things with budgets that could

October 8, 2020O not handle the strain. They even expected the county offices to be open and staffed five days a week. The cost for this quickly outpaced the large bag of starter fees received. At the same time commercial requests were delayed by lack of staff or mishandled until they chose a different county.

Residential homes on small lots are not a plus for a county facing water shortages and that has scant ability to provide services. Homes on larger lots and small acreage take less water, less bodies needing county services and still pay real estate taxes. Clean commercial development in proper areas provides real estate taxes, possible sales tax, and jobs with a minimum of county services needed.

What would be your biggest priority if elected?

I want to leave the county financially, environmentally, and structurally sound with a better vision of the future than it has today. One of the best ways to do this is to have the residents interested and involved. By making sure that BOCC hearings are not held at 9 a.m. on a weekday morning which keeps working people from attending. Right now we have a “part time” county. The professional staff needs to be paid a professional wage and treated with respect.

What else should voters know about you?

I lived in Elbert County in the 1980s and raised my family here. I came back 11 years ago as we all considered it home.

I love this county and its people. I see amazing potential that has never been unlocked. Not by destroying its natural beauty or selling the water to the greedy, but by finally asking the people what they want.

I’ve served on the planning commission and the library board, and spent most of my life over the years serving citizens of this county in one way or another. It’s just something that I like to be part of. I am proud of many accomplishments we’ve achieved, but the job is not complete.

What makes you the best person for the job?

In one word — Dedication.

I am proud of my contributions to Elbert County government over the last three-plus years. Many of my accomplishments are the result of serving with fellow commissioners Chris Richardson, Rick Pettitt and Danny Wilcox. We have served together and have accomplished better county government together.

How should growth in the county be managed in the coming years?

There’s different aspects, and the first one is property rights.

If a family owns the property they should have the opportunity to manage that property in the manner that they deem best for them.

There’s also the economic environment. We’ve got about 28,000 people in the county. Much of the growth has been in the northwest part of the county due to location. If people follow all the rules when applying for applications, we have to accept that growth is appropriate.

What would be your biggest priority if reelected?

The big issue right now in my mind is economic continuity.

With this virus I’m very concerned that we’re going to see a 2008 kind of a downturn, and we have to plan for that. We know the economy always has ups and downs, and we’ve been planning for this. We’ve set aside in excess of $5 million, so that if we have an economic downturn at least we have a savings account to help us through that.

What else should voters know about you?

I am humbled by county voter faith in me, and sincerely promise the I will do everything possible to protect our way of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

WWII veteran receives medals after 74 years Castle Rock man never realized he qualified for honors

Arthur Brodin sat in his townhome staring at a list of medals a congressman would present to him in two days.

Brodin quietly shook his head.

The ceremony, the medals, the attention — it was all too much, he said.

Unnecessary, he thought. Other men had sacrificed more than he did, he said.

The 97-year-old, who lives alone in Castle Rock and still drives when he needs to be somewhere, is simply happy to be home and have his health, he said.

“I was thankful I came out of it with a broken ankle and some other injuries, partial injuries, to my body. It amounted to a 10% disability,” he said.

“I was very thankful to come home with that much.”

More than 70 years after he served in World War II, it did not occur to Brodin he might qualify to receive medals for his service in the U.S. Army. Brodin enlisted at Fort Logan in Denver in April 1943, becoming a surgical technician and serving in the European theater during the war.

Private First Class Arthur Brodin was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946 after serving in World War II. Brodin helped prepare for D-Day and survived a glider crash eight days into the operation. He also fought in Battle of the Bulge.

I’m old enough that I have seen a lot of these problems that keep coming back and I’ve had experience. I was county Ormiston commissioner for four years here in Baca County. I have a diverse back ground, teaching school, working in construction and I have a degree in industrial arts. I’ve seen a lot of things that needs some restructuring, and if we don’t fix it, the same things will continue to keep happening.

If you’re elected, which one single issue will be at the top of your agenda?

I would like to help try to get the economy back on line and survive

the coronavirus. I’ll do what it takes to get people back to work, kids back in school, people of of the house again. Those things are a real priority. We’ve never seen a disease like this one, and if there’s anything we can do to help we should do it.

Why are you seeking this office?

I’m getting older and all of the things happening in the world today, I hope I can help Colorado survive some of it. I’m 71 and kind of oldschool, but I’m healthy and I want to help the state. I’ve got a lot invested here.

What else should voters know about you?

I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s, and came from a family with six kids, and we all had to work hard to support the family farm. I worked the fields when I was a kid, so I wasn’t born with a gold spoon in my mouth.

I think people appreciate what they have more if they have to work for it.

I am the most energetic, active, and educated candidate on the ballot for HD 64. I already served in the 2020 legislative session and have that Holtorf experience under my belt. If you’re reelected, which one single issue will be at the top of your agenda?

Restoring the Colorado economy and getting back to normalcy. Not this new normal that the Democrat leadership are trying to condition our society into believing in either.

If you’re reelected, what must you accomplish in order for you to consider your term a success?

I must stop the radical leftist agenda that continues to undermine our state and reverse the damaging legislation and policies that undermine our rural way of life and continue to Californicate Colorado.

Why are you seeking this office?

I can not sit and watch what is happening to the great state of Colorado anymore. I decided to get personally involved so my grandchildren do not grow up in a state and a country that we cannot even recognize anymore.

What else should voters know about you?

A: I am a veteran leader. If you want to make Colorado …. Colorado again then you need to send me back to Denver to aggressively stand up for what we believe in as red-blooded Americans who are proud of our country and our heritage.

I have lived in Kiowa since 2017 and would like to see positive and safe growth here. I have been trying to be part of the board since I was eligible to but have always been turned Chambers down by the current

Why are you running for this position?

You could say that I was lucky to be appointed to the board until these elections because there was no one else who ran against me, but I have seen too many discrepancies since I have been part of it. Unfortunately,

we have some who are out for their own well-being and forget we serve as the voice of our Kiowa residents. As you have seen, my vote has not always been the popular one by many board members, but I stand by residents pleads for change.

If elected what would be your top priority?

If elected I would like to continue to make sure our residents continue to have a voice and make sure all decisions are not just made by the board as they have been in the past. I would continue to work towards a fix for our continued drainage problem, and would brainstorm possibilities with our board and residents to bring in more revenue and reinstate our Kiowa Police Department.

Theresa (Terry) Howard Candidate for Kiowa trustee Tell us about yourself I was born in Fort Monmouth, NJ and raised an Army brat. I have lived in Colorado since 1972; graduated from Roy J. Wasson high school. I moved to Kiowa from Aurora almost five years ago, to be closer to my family. I love our little town and want to see it responsibly prosper. Over my adult Howard life I have managed businesses, multi-million-dollar properties, my own painting and drywall business, then a motorcycle rider education non-profit. I excel at working within a budget and generating income. I am fiscally conservative.

I was a volunteer lobbyist for motorcyclists’ rights at our state Capitol as well as in Washington DC for 10 plus years, representing motorcyclists in Colorado and getting safety measures passed in the state of Colorado. I own and work from my home in Kiowa and have kitty cats and puppy dogs, no two-legged children.

I am running for this position because I feel the citizens of Kiowa have gone too long without a voice in how Kiowa moves forward.

As everyone knows, “waste” and “waist” are homophones.

Some words have more homophones than others.

Rose rose and watered her rows and rows of roses.

As many of you may know by now, Merriam-Webster has removed the word “awesome” from its 2021 edition dictionary.

The reason given? “Overused and misused to death,” according to spokesperson Anne Teak. “`Awesome,’” Teak continued, “has over 100 perfectly good synonyms that rarely get used. It’s just not cool.”

We were so poor when I was growing up my mother and father could only afford one book and that was a dictionary.

On Saturday night, my mother would sit my sister and me down in front of her and make up a story by flipping from page to page.

“Measles ... the ... inarticulate ... goat ... ate ... guardrail.”

Rarely did her stories make any sense, but because of them I

learned to comprehend art critics.

I never get tired of words.

How many words are there in the English language?

The Oxford dictionary has 273,000 words (171,476 in current use; 47,156 being obsolete; and around 9,500 derivative as subentries).

The English language is an everchanging organism. Some once popular words such as “bumbershoot” make way for others such as “pooka.”

John McWhorter, associate professor of comparative literature at Columbia, reminds his students language is always adding and subtracting words.

Certain words become archaic (“betimes”) as new words (Merriam-Webster added “detectorist” in 2019) are infused. “Infused” is a good example of a newly popular, long existent, word.

The English language is ... wondrous.

Getting the proper rest keeps us at our best

hether we find ourselves setting the pace for the race, or just trying to keep the pace, we should always find time to give our mind and body a little rest.

And others have shared that they have never been busier and that their mental stress and physical fatigue have never been higher with little or no time to take a breather.

In a bigger, faster, harder, go go go, world, sometimes we get so wrapped up in trying to keep up, we forget to take care of ourselves along the way. We schedule more meetings or calls than we can fit

One of my favorite old saws is, “Haste makes waste.”

An old saw is what’s known as an idiom.

Every village has an idiom.

Some villages, like Washington, D.C., have more than one idiom.

Idioms, most of them, are clichés, and as you know by now I avoid clichés like the plague.

You’d better read between the lines before using a cliché around

into our day. We squeeze more work into our already jam-packed weekends and try and justify it by saying that it “needs” to get done. Or we try and fool ourselves into believing that we are the only ones who can do it, denying our mind and body the rest we need to perform at our best.

There are many among us who live with an “early to bed and early to rise” attitude. Then again, many others have developed a habit of “late to bed and early to rise,” eroding the amount of quality rest we need to recharge the body and the mind.

Those of us who use planning tools and calendars to manage our day have found it very helpful to block off specific times in the calendar for answering emails, making calls, having meetings, research, reading, writing, workouts, and other things that fill our day. I subscribe to this habit of blocking off specific amounts of time in my calendar to make sure I am managing each day as best as I can.

That method of managing my calendar has helped to improve

my productivity in all areas. What I started adding to my calendar are blocked times for rest — 15- or 30-minute blocks of time where I allow myself to take a breather, sit quietly, and just rest, giving my mind and my body a pause. And these little added moments of rest seem to inspire creativity, clarity, and vitality, energizing me for the balance of the day and into the evening.

This is not new news or revolutionary thinking. I have heard many of these suggestions before and I brushed it off thinking that I was too busy and that I needed to get things done. And then, when I heard someone talk about it one more time, it finally made sense.

Hearing the results that others were experiencing, I decided that building time into my day for rest was just as important as anything else.

If we allow the rush and crush of life to consume us, at some point stress and fatigue will become the norm. The thing is this, it’s a choice we get to make.

breaks when we need to, block off committed time in our crazy busy schedules to take a rest. The key word here is committed. When I first started trying to block off my calendar for moments of rest, I would see that as a discretionary time slot. That If I needed to slip in a call or a meeting, I would just override my blocked-out time of rest. But now, if it isn’t defined as important or urgent, nothing steals my time slots of rest.

be more informed about progressing our town. We need to have our input included in the decisions Kiowa makes. I will be setting up meetings as well as social media to help initiate input from the citizens. The citizens of Kiowa need to be represented and not my own opinion presented. Constituents need a voice on the board, and I will do my very best to represent you.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for a seat on the Kiowa Board of Trustees because I believe that the voices of residents are not being heard in our government. I also see a lack of common sense, practicality, fiscal responsibility, and vision for our future as a community. I believe that I can bring all those things to the table, if given a chance.

If elected, what would be your top priority?

I would like to see several things change in our town: Better quality communication to our citizens. Facebook is great,

but not everyone lives there. The town website should be the primary communication tool for the town to disseminate what is happening, or what is being decided on the town’s behalf. I would see to it that that is improved.

Fiscal transparency is a must. If the citizenry does not know the state of the town’s finances, they cannot know or understand the choices that the board must make for the wellbeing of the township. Open communication to the board. It should be easy to make your voice heard, not difficult. I would push to open a line of communication with the board, so that if you cannot make it to a board meeting, your comments and suggestions can and will be heard by those you elected to lead. Growth is essential to the ongoing vitality of Kiowa, and it must be done with responsibility and respect to current, as well as future citizens. Traffic, safety, revenue, and town support are of utmost importance to me. Kiowa MUST have a police department.

The sherrif ’s office is great, but they are spread way too thin, across 1,851 square miles. Response time can be long, which is unacceptable, and must be changed. This will be one of

my top priorities.

Jonathon Shafer Candidate for Kiowa trustee Why are you running for this position?

I am running to be reelected as a trustee because I believe our great little town has a lot to offer its people. I want to keep the Kiowa we all love while helping to make it better for all, restore government Shafer accountability, transparency and encourage development that respects the character that we have all come to know and love.

If elected, what will be your top priority?

If I am reelected, I intend to: Work to repair some past discrepancies and set new standards going forward. Do my best to listen and understand the concerns of the people of this town and work toward finding acceptable solutions. Seek out new ways to keep this Town the best little place to live in. Money.com ranks Parker No. 2 on list of best places to live Broomfield is the only other Colorado community in the top 20 STAFF REPORT

Parker has been named the second best place to live in the United States

by Money.com. The town trails only Evans, Georgia, in the publication’s 2020 rankings, released Sept. 22.

“Parker is thrilled to be ranked as one of America’s best places to live,” Parker Mayor Mike Waid said in a news release. “We are proud of our fantastic community and are excited to be recognized for all of the great things that Parker has to offer.”

A news release by Money explains some of the factors that weighed heavily in the rankings.

“This year, Money looked at towns and cities with a population of at least 25,000 and ranked the Best Places to Live putting the greatest emphasis on economic factors, like employment opportunities, as well as supply and demand for homes, cost of living,

Comedians, actors and producers are creating a variety of new podcasts

ithout many opportunities to perform in front of a live audience, some Denver-area entertainers have turned to podcasting as a new way to grow an audience and stay creative.

Local entertainers, including comedians, actors and producers, have started these shows to stay relevant and busy as the weeks of industry shutdowns due to COVID-19 have turned into months.

Denver resident Anthony Kapfer, a local comedian, started a show with friends called “Is This Anything?”

The show, with six episodes so far, started as just a video call between friends and eventually blossomed into a podcast.

The four hosts, some in Denver and others in New York City, meet up on Zoom and try out new joke ideas with each other, then offer tips for how to make the concept stronger and funnier.

“We just wanted to meet up because it had been two months since we had a chance to work on new material in front of an audience,” Kapfer said. “It’s a nice way to feel like we’re still doing stand-up comedy in a time when we can’t do stand-up in the way we’ve done it for years.”

COURTESY PHOTO Sometimes, the show has guest comedians on to try out their material. Everyone has the same amount of time to run through their ideas and get feedback. One reason for working on jokes, even without a chance to perform them, is to have fresh ideas when live shows resume.

“We want to have new stuff,” Kapfer said. “We don’t want to go back to comedy doing the same jokes we were doing six months ago... every-

thing has changed.”

For Kapfer and his fellow hosts, it has been strange going so long without telling jokes to an audience.

“The podcast has been really nice because it sort of forces me to think about writing,” he said. “It’s easy at a time like this to think: ‘what’s the point?’”

The show features everything from fully developed jokes to simple strands of an idea.

Here they grow Not all performers are using their pre-COVID 19 career as the subject-matter for their new podcast, however.

Christy Montour-Larson and Edith Weiss for instance, both formerly worked in theater but when all their shows were canceled, they decided to start a podcast about gardening.

The show, “Upside Down Tulips,” gives tips and answers questions about growing flowers, vegetables, herbs,

indoor plants and other topics like composting and canning produce.

“Anything that grows, we talk about,” Montour-Lasron said.

Montour-Larson and Weiss are both long-time gardeners and have noticed their hobby getting more attention in recent months as COVID-19 has pushed residents into the outdoors.

Weiss and Montour-Larson, both Wheat Ridge residents, also bring in actors from throughout the Denver area to help them make spoof commercials.

“It’s nice to have a reason to get out of the bed and do something creative,” Montour-Larson said. “Especially when there’s so much happening you have no control over.”

In addition, the hosts, who are also neighbors, get to use many of the skills they’ve gained through working in theater including producing, acting, teaching and marketing.

“It’s a long time to be sitting around twiddling thumbs, and we’re creative people,” Montour-Larson said. “We have things to share with the world.”

Getting together Chris Starkey, who owns Imprint Group, an entertainment company in Denver, started his podcast, “Dance Dads,” after a video of himself and his daughter dancing went viral.

“It’s four dads with kids who are the same age,” Starkey said about the podcast.

“We talk about relevant topics that have to do with being home during COVID.” SEE PODCASTING, P14

“We used to get together every Friday anyway and talk about entertainment,” Starkey said. “The podcast gives us an opportunity to still get together.”

As of press time, the show was planned to launch the last week of September.

The hosts also have another podcast called “Places Please” about the entertainment industry in the Rocky Mountain Region. This show, however, was discontinued until live shows begin again.

“I tell people all the time it’s the greatest opportunity of our career ... to create a personal brand or podcast,” Starkey said. “Because you have everyone’s attention right now.”

Montour-Larson also said she sees this as a good time to start a podcast.

Later on, Brodin can recall joining a convoy to Paris, running out of gas and watching airplanes drop 5-gallon gas cans from the sky so they could motor on.

He remembers trenching through deep mud during the rainy season in Saar Valley, Germany, for more months of fighting.

He fought in Battle of the Bulge, regarded as “arguably the greatest battle in American military history,” reads the U.S. Army’s website.

Christmas was just another day that year, Brodin said.

Brodin was honorably discharged on Feb. 5, 1946. Back in Colorado, he returned to the family farm in Longmont where he grew up, and then went on to a boarding house on South Pearl Street in Denver, where he met his wife, Luella.

The couple moved to Aurora and had three children. Arthur today has six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and another on the way. He has lived in Castle Rock since roughly 2003. Luella died in 2016.

One of Arthur’s son’s, Robert Brodin, said he lived most of his life without his father making one mention of the war. Only within the past 15 years did Arthur start to share stories, Robert said.

“Being able to converse about it and ask questions and get more of what he did and what it meant to him to be in the military, it was great,” Robert said.

Robert, who served 21 years in the U.S. Navy, said honoring his father is important to keeping the history of World War II veterans alive and teaching the next generation about their sacrifice.

“He probably could live out his days and not even blink an eye,” Robert said, “but it’s these medals and these stories that people need to understand.”

Since he served in World War II, Brodin should meet the criteria for medals, she recalled the tour guide telling her. The family inquired with U.S. Rep. Ken Buck’s office, and sure enough, there were plenty of medals waiting for him.

Brodin has now received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-AfricanMiddle Eastern Campaign Medal and Bronze Star Attachment (Triple), the WW2 Victory Medal, the Army Occupation Medal and Germany Clasp, the Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, and the Marksman Badge and Rifle Bar. As Buck put it during the Sept. 26 medal ceremony in Castle Rock, Brodin “did his job, came back to America and just got right back to it.” Buck called the opportunity to recognize Brodin a great honor.

“The Greatest Generation has been ignored for a long time, and because of Art and his fellow soldiers and Marines and airmen, we enjoy the freedoms that we enjoy,” Buck said.

“It’s great for us in a time when we are divided like this to look back and see a time when our country came together to take on a struggle.”

Brodin helped with preparations for D-Day and survived a glider crash eight days after the operation’s launch. His plywood, motorless aircraft smashed into thick forest after being released too early, he said. The airplane towing his glider was taking on gun fire and had to deviate from the plan.

Brodin, who joined the U.S. Army as a surgical technician, was thrust into the role of combat surgeon that day.

With some gauze and stainless-steel scissors, Brodin was expected to care for the other men on board his glider should anything happen.

Their assignment was to place bombs on bridges coming into Utah Beach. The officer in charge died in the glider crash from a broken neck.

His unit took care of him, Brodin said, leaving his body in the care of another medic unit, and went on to place their bombs before rejoining the U.S. forces.

The proposed Spring Valley Metropolitan District No. 6 encompasses approximately 138.44 acres and the legal description of the proposed District is as follows: A PARCEL OF PROPERTY LOCATED IN SECTION 32, TOWNSHIP 8 SOUTH, RANGE 64 WEST OF THE 6TH PRINCIPAL MERIDIAN, COUNTY OF ELBERT, STATE OF COLORADO. The elections are being conducted as mail ballot elections by the Designated Election Official, Craig Sorensen, c/o McGeady Becher P.C., 450 E. 17th Avenue, Suite 400, Denver, Colorado 80203, telephone number (303) 592-4380. Not sooner than October 12, 2020 and no later than October 19, 2020, the Designated Election Official shall mail to each active registered elector of the proposed Districts, a mail ballot packet.

James Marshall, Scott Marshall and Christopher J. Kirst are candidates for terms extending to the second regular elections and Holly Robinson and Shelley Marshall are candidates for terms extending to the next regular elections.

The walk-in polling place shall be open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. beginning not sooner than twenty-two days prior to the elections, October 12, 2020, and from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the date of election.

The purposes of the proposed Districts are to provide the following services: streets; water; sanitation; limited park and recreation; limited fire protection; and all other improvements or services permitted by Article 1, Title 32, C.R.S. Pursuant to Section 1-5-207, C.R.S., the estimated operating and debt service mill levies and fiscal year spending for each District for the first year following organization are: Combined Operating and Debt Service Mill Levy 65.000 mills Fiscal Year Spending $50,000 NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that an eligible elector of said proposed Districts for the purpose of said elections is a person registered to vote pursuant to the “Colorado Uniform Election Code of 1992”; and (i) who is a resident of the proposed District, or (ii) who, or whose spouse or civil union partner, owns taxable real or personal property within the proposed District, whether said person resides within the proposed District or not. A person who is obligated to pay taxes under a contract to purchase taxable property within the proposed District shall be considered an owner of taxable property for the purpose of qualifying as an eligible elector.

Additionally, maps of the proposed Districts as included in the Service Plans are available for examination at the office of the District Court for Elbert County and at 450 E. 17th Avenue, Suite 400, Denver, Colorado 80203.

Write-in candidates must have filed an affidavit of intent with the Designated Election Official by no later than August 31, 2020.

NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that applications for absentee voter ballots may be filed with the Designated Election Official at the address set forth above no later than the close of business on the Tuesday immediately preceding the elections. Return of absentee voter ballots and replacement ballots may be received by the Designated Election Official at the above address, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. beginning on October 12, 2020, until the day prior to the elections, or between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the date of the elections.
