Legacy Village gets green light for next stage Preliminary plans approved by town board of trustees

A sketch and preliminary plans for Legacy Village were approved by the Elizabeth Board of Trustees

during the board’s Jan. 26 meeting.

Plans for Legacy Village, being developed by Jim Marshall, are in the early stages, and Marshall has not submitted an application for the final plat.

“There are three steps in the subdivision process,” said Grace Erickson, assistant town administrator for Elizabeth. “The first is a sketch plan, then preliminary plan

and then the final plat. The developer has gone through the first two steps. The next step includes platting whatever portion of the property they will develop first.”

The property proposed for development is between Walmart and Safeway along State Highway 86, and was zoned for up to 383 residential units and a five-acre commercial parcel, according to

Marshall. When complete it will feature residential uses including single-family detached homes and duplexes, with 31% of the site remaining as open space, offering trails and pocket parks throughout.

‘The arts lift spirits’ PACE Center prepares to begin indoor, in-person events again

The Parker Arts, Culture & Events Center is gearing up to again bring patrons inside for entertainment.

As the state and county’s COVID-19 data has continued to improve and vaccines are being distributed, the county has been moved to level yellow, allowing up to 100 people in certain event spaces.

Since first closing its doors almost a year ago, the center has continued to hold a variety of events whenever able, including outdoor classes, livestreamed shows, drive-in concerts and socially distanced in-person shows.

“We just immediately transitioned to other types of programming,” said Carrie Glassburn, acting cultural director for Parker Arts.

“We wanted to make sure we were still there to provide entertainment and allow the community to engage safely.”

The last time the PACE Center was able to do in-person, indoor events was in October, before the spike in cases over the holidays.

They will be able to have 100 people in their theater beginning March 5, with the first event being

The show is sold out but tickets for other upcoming shows are also on sale, including jazz and comedy performances. Another round of tickets will be on sale beginning in March. Show details and tickets are

As a 5-star certified business, the center has been designated by the county as a business following extra COVID-19 precautions laid out by the state.

Shows this spring will include a kids show with live pigs, a lecture about a famous Colorado cannibal and stand-up comedy. Many of these also have streaming options for those who can’t or don’t wish to attend in person.

Parker Arts hopes that by summer, they will be able to accommodate even more patrons, Glassburn said.

“People have been cooped up,” Glassburn said. “They miss live music, they miss going to comedy clubs, (and) outdoor concerts.”

Patrons aren’t the only ones excited for the center’s events to start back up, the staff is also looking forward to getting back to their trade.

“Our sound tech and lighting designers and stage managers, all of them, this is what they do,” Glassburn said.

“They’re really excited to get back to what it is they actually are trained to do,” Glassburn said.

During the pandemic, Parker Arts’ members have remained with the organization, supporting them even when events had to drastically change course, she said.

“People know that the arts lift spirits,” Glassburn said.

Complaints against The Rock church draw health department’s attention Large gathering of a conservative political group was shown on video

The Tri-County Health Department says it has repeatedly attempted to contact The Rock church in Castle Rock after receiving two complaints that the church hosted large gatherings, including a meeting of the conservative political group FEC United.

A Jan. 28 gathering drew scrutiny after FEC United founder Joe Oltmann posted video footage to social media showing hundreds of people crowded closely together in the church sanctuary without masks.

At the time, Douglas County was under Level Orange restrictions on the state’s COVID-19 dial, which limited indoor seated events to 25% capacity or 50 people.

The event was one of FEC United’s membership meetings, according to the organization’s website. FEC United did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Brian Hlavacek, environmental health director for Tri-County Health Department, said staff first contacted The Rock on Feb. 3 and have followed up multiple times by phone and email. Health agency staff had not received a response as

of Feb. 16, he said, and would continue trying to reach The Rock.

Tri-County Health operates on a complaint-based system, a spokesman said, and investigates potential violations of pandemic guidelines if it receives a complaint.

If staff can speak with the church, the agency’s protocols are to first provide educational information about COVID-19 safety measures and ensure the facility has current information about pandemic guidelines, Hlavacek said.

“We would have articulated, here’s the complaint we received, and the concern. We just want to make sure you have the most up-to-date guidance,” he said on Feb. 12.

The health agency’s educationfirst approach has been successful at gaining compliance, he said.

“If we still see noncompliance down the road, if we’re getting complaints, usually it involves a potential warning, potentially ending up in some sort of cease-and-desist letter,” he said. “We are not certainly there yet. We are hoping to make contact.”

Hlavacek said Tri-County also received a complaint on Feb. 12 alleging The Rock held another large gathering without social distancing or masks, although further details of that incident were not immediately available.

Tri-County Health had not attempted to contact FEC United as of Feb. 16, he said, only staff at the event venue. The health agency’s

approach has been to contact venues and event facilities directly, he said.

The Rock’s lead pastor, Mike Polhemus, said on Feb. 2, before Tri-County Health began outreach, that he attended the FEC event at The Rock.

Polhemus said the footage did not depict what the event looked like from beginning to end, but he would not describe to what extent people spaced themselves apart or wore masks outside of what the video showed during a message of support for Congresswoman Lauren Boebert.

“It puts it in a poor point of view when you take a snapshot of something,” he said.

Polhemus placed responsibility for following pandemic precautions on FEC United, saying “it’s our facility but we don’t lead the event.”

“It was held at The Rock,” he said. “FEC runs the event. We don’t manage the event, we don’t run the event.”

Asked if he believed the church has a duty to ensure organizations renting its facility follow protocols, Polhemus said “we are not the enforcers” and that Tri-County Health should contact FEC regarding any violations.

Polhemus said the church takes pandemic precautions during events it organizes and has not had a COVID-19 case in more than a month.

“We are doing things to prevent the virus. We do care for people,” he said.

Some community members expressed their disapproval of the event on the social media post, Polhemus said, but he said it is better for people to focus on good work the church does in the community.

The church operates a large food bank and participates in the Winter Shelter Network, which opens church doors at night for people without housing.

FEC United and Oltmann have generated controversy, including for the armed wing of FEC’s operation and Oltmann’s recent naming in a lawsuit alleging defamation for spreading election conspiracies, according to multiple media reports.

Polhemus said “we align with Jesus” when asked if he had concerns about the church working with FEC United. Polhemus said FEC does not describe its armed branch as a militia, that he may not be aware of all the group’s controversies and he believes the organization is focused on helping the community.

Polhemus could not later be reached for comment regarding Tri-County’s efforts to contact the church.

COVID-19 cases have declined in recent weeks and Douglas County has since been moved to lighter Level Yellow restrictions on the pandemic dial.

But Hlavacek said people should still be following proper social distancing, such as keeping 6 feet from one another when possible, wearing masks and good hand washing.

Town ready to open talks on Kiowa Creek development Kiowa Board of Trustees members weigh in on metropolitan districts

A majority of Kiowa Board of Trustees members voted to move forward with the idea of a special district and with talks regarding a proposed Kiowa Creek residential community development plan at the old Wombult property, south of Fawn Valley, presented by Tim Craft of Craft Companies. Trustee Carey Kalish voted against moving forward with the preliminary plans set forth in a developer agreement at the trustees’ meeting on Feb. 9.

Plans for the proposed development in Kiowa are still in the early stages, and Craft stated at the meeting that the only purpose for the Feb. 9 discussion was to find out if board members were aware of how metropolitan districts work, and if they would have any problem with the community being under the jurisdiction of a special district.

Metro districts are created by developers and are quasi-governmental district that have taxing authoritywithin the communities they build. They are often established to create the infrastructure

necessary to support a new subdivision. Buyers in the community will see a mill levy tax from the district on their property tax bill, much like a mill levy tax from a school district.

Craft has not yet submitted a concept plan for the development, and said the first step was finding out if trustees are comfortable with a metro district.

Trustees pushed Craft to give them some type of general concept plan, but Craft said they were not prepared to do so at this time.

“We submitted the draft developer’s agreement about six months ago,” said Craft.

“Normally if we submit a site plan we start negotiation on a site plan and we’re not really there yet. If the town is not comfortable with the metro district, then we would have to

start moving things around on the site plans and that can cost a lot of money. We respectfully decline (providing a concept plan) at this time.”

Craft presented a verbal description of the proposed development, stating “We are anticipating somewhere in the neighborhood of 333 to 400 homes.

There is a need for workforce housing within the community.

One of the biggest concerns from Elizabeth and Kiowa school districts is their teachers don’t have a place to live within the district.”

Craft agreed Tim Craft, to put together Craft Companies a non-binding conceptual plan for trustees to review at the upcoming March 2 meeting. Meeting information can be found on the town’s website, townofkiowaco.gov, under meetings and agendas.

Sky Ridge offers augmented reality-assisted surgeries Headset is essentially a way to see inside patient’s body

When Dr. Brent Kimball looked down at his spinal surgery patient in an operating room on Jan. 28, he found himself with an ability very few have ever experienced: the equivalent of X-ray vision.

Kimball, a neurosurgeon at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, was wearing a special headset created to augment his vision and allow him to view the inner workings of his patient’s body.

The 68-year-old man’s spine was there, in 3D in front of Kimball’s eyes. And he hadn’t yet made a single cut.

“We can actually see where the spine is underneath the skin, the fat, the muscle tissue, the ligaments, we can see where the nerves are, we can see where everything is without even making an incision,” Kimball said. “It allows the approach, the planning, to be very, very precise.”

Over the next three hours, Kimball worked to relieve the man’s lower back and leg pain, which was being caused by a slipped vertebrae. For the first time, Kimball was aided in the spinal surgery by this cutting-edge tool, which allowed him to be even more precise.

“Accuracy is really important,” he said. “There’s a lot of nerves nearby and they’re very, very sensitive to even the smallest inaccuracies.”

The near-eye display headset, made by Augmedics, is custom fit for each user. Sky Ridge is the first hospital in the Denver metro area to have access to this tool, according to a news release from the hospital.

The technology being used, known as augmented reality, layers 3D, computergenerated images over the user’s real-world surroundings.

In the case of spinal surgeries, the augmented reality headset superimposes an image made by a CT scan of the patient’s body onto the patient, allowing the surgeon to see exactly where he needs to make an incision or place hardware.

This is important because each patient’s spine and body are going to be slightly different. Knowing the exact layout of each patient’s anatomy provides a significant advantage.

“I feel like this technology allows me to take what I’ve

mastered and amplify it in a way that the surgery is more precise, safer, faster, and there’s more confidence in it,” Kimball said.

Before this technology was available, spinal surgeons had several other options including the use of robotics, looking at a two-dimensional map of the body on a nearby screen during the

surgery or taking continuous X-rays to reference throughout the procedure.

So far for Kimball, he prefers the “xvision” headset over all these options.

“We’ve only done two surgeries, but this has already given me things that I haven’t been able to fully appreciate or benefit from using the other technologies

out there,” he said.

Instead of having to constantly look up at another screen throughout the surgery, he can keep his eyes on his patient the whole time.

“They’ve figured out a way to present (a lot of) information in a very intuitive way for the surgeon to just use it,” he said.

At the beginning of each surgery, the surgical team attaches a reference frame to one of the patient’s bones.

Throughout the surgery, that reference frame is constantly calculating and communicating with the headset, keeping the image that the surgeon is seeing up-to-date, similar to how a satellite works. He can also see his tools and equipment through the software. When he places a screw, he can see exactly where it lies in the spine.

“There’s no lag,” he said.

As of Feb. 3, Kimball had used the headset in only one other surgery, for a scoliosis patient. He hopes to see other doctors in the hospital trained to use the technology as well in the future.

“The learning curve was very, very short,” he said.

The headset can be used for fusion surgeries, or procedures where the surgeon is placing hardware in the body to alleviate pain caused by injury or disease.

Kimball will decide when to use this tool in the future based on each patient’s specific situation.

“The most exciting thing for me is I think it will lead to more reliable and ultimately more efficient and faster surgery,” Kimball said. “It’s going to allow us to have more confidence during surgery that everything is exactly where we want it to be and that means a lot.”

Lawmakers have full plate as session gets underway Helping students get past problems related to pandemic is at top of job list

Helping Colorado students recover from the effects of the pandemic will be one of lawmakers’ top priorities as the 2021 legislative session gets underway, but members of the Colorado General Assembly also plan to address longstanding problems around school finance, college access, teacher diversity and civics education.

Lawmakers returned to work Feb. 16 after a monthlong recess due to COVID-19 concerns. While most Colorado students are back in school, hundreds of thousands of students experienced months of remote learning in the spring and fall, and parents, educators and policymakers alike are thinking about how to make up for lost learning.

At least two bills this session tackle the problem from different angles.

The more than 200 bills filed on Feb. 16 also include proposals to maintain school funding despite a drop in enrollment, reduce the role of the SAT and ACT in college admissions, improve college access for Native American students, and strengthen civics education and media literacy after a tumultuous year of protest and change.

The first bills out of the gate often represent top priorities for their sponsors, but they touch on just a fraction of the education issues lawmakers will take up this year.

Here are several that caught our attention.  SB21-013 Reversing COVIDrelated Learning Loss

How should school districts address student learning loss during the pandemic? That’s the question a Democrat-backed proposal seeks to answer. Sponsored by Sen. Rhonda Fields of Aurora and Reps.

Jennifer Bacon, also a Denver school board member, and Meg Froelich of Englewood, the bill would call on the Colorado Department of Education to identify products, strategies, and services to help students affected by the halt of in-person instruction.

Education Commissioner Katy Anthes has also identified this as a top priority and pledged to use roughly $52 million in federal aid on programs that provide tutoring and summer school, but plans are still taking shape.  SB21-037 Student Equity Education Funding Programs The bill sponsored by state Sen. Paul Lundeen, a Republican from Monument, faces an uphill battle in a Democratic-controlled General Assembly where many lawmakers are wary of taking money from public schools or opening the door to any form of vouchers. It proposes that districts that have halted in-person instruction for 30 or more days send money to parents of eligible students for educational services and supplies.  SB21-053 Adjustments to School Funding Fiscal Year 2020-21 Colorado schools reported almost 30,000 fewer students than in the 2019-20 school year, a decrease that typically would result in a multimillion-dollar reduction in state funding. Four Democrats, including the chairs of the Senate and House education committees and members of the Joint Budget Committee, filed this bill in an effort to spare districts from midyear cuts.

Love by the model trainload Retired attorney learned the depths of a parent’s love with model railroading

“Do you believe in magic?”

With the wave of a magic wand and an “abracadabra,” Ken Cook walked through the secret entrance — one he asked us not to divulge — to his model train room.

In the basement of the tidy Columbine Valley home, against walls painted with backdrops of cities, freight yards and mountains, sprawled Cook’s colossal Lionel train display. The culmination of more than 30 years of planning and building, and a lifetime of collecting, Cook called it his “great opus.”

“Actually, a friend called it that, and I had to look up the word ‘opus,’ but I’d say it fits,” said Cook, a retired attorney.

Standing at the control module of the freight yard, Cook’s hands began to work the buttons, switches and dials with the dexterity of a symphony conductor. The freight yard sprang to life.

Tiny steam locomotives chugged to and fro, pulling freight cars into place. Magnetic cranes plucked tiny metal bars from gondola cars. Vibrating floors shuffled tiny cows in and out of livestock cars. From the yard’s control tower, a tiny foreman descended the stairs.

“The magic of Lionel is that all the accessories really work,” Cook said, firing up the other portions of the set.

A freight train traversed a mining district, the locomotive sending up puffs of smoke. A gleaming passenger train traversed a long route through mountain tunnels, past a sleepy village and back to a busy city station.

Cook, 71, got his first Lionel set at age 3 in 1953 — the high point of sales for Lionel, the company that became a cultural touchstone for generations of youngsters.

The family lived in Japan, where Cook’s father was stationed as an officer in the Air Force. The family — Cook was one of four children — headed back stateside in 1956, though many cross-country moves lay ahead.

Through it all, Cook maintained his fascination with model trains.

When Cook was 10, his dad hired an electrician to wire up a big set in their home in Indiana. Cook kept working on his layouts through high school.

The family work ethic served Cook well, taking him to a stint in the Air Force, then law school. In 1979 he joined a 10-man law firm in Colorado Springs, eventually making his way to the Department of Justice. His wife, Linda, served as a prosecutor in SEE TRAINS, P11

While they don’t have the votes to stop this bill, Republican leaders have said they plan to ask hard questions about where that money is best spent.  HB21-1067 College Admission Use Of National Test Score The bill would allow the governing board of a public college or university to decide whether to require the ACT or SAT for admission.

Schools would also need to submit a yearly report on their first-time freshman class. The bill is sponsored by state Rep. Cathy Kipp, a Fort Collins Democrat, and state Rep. Mark Baisley, a Roxborough Republican, along with Democratic state Sens. Tammy Story of Jefferson County and Janet Buckner of Aurora. The proposed legislation aims to help more students of color and those who are low-income get into college, especially because research shows the standardized tests are biased against certain groups.

Opponents, however, say the bill won’t achieve its aims and instead further inequities.  SB21-057 Private Lenders Of Student Loans Acts And Practices The bill, sponsored by Democratic Sens. Faith Winter of Westminster and Julie Gonzales of Denver, would extend to private student loan borrowers the basic protections granted under federal loans. The protections would leave private loan borrowers less vulnerable to predatory practices, advocates say.  SB21-029 Colorado American Indian Tribes In-state Tuition Some Colorado colleges and universities already offer tuition discounts to Native American students. This bill, however, would require higher education institutions statewide to offer in-state tuition to students from American Indian tribes with historical ties to Colorado. Boulder Democratic Sen. Stephen Fenberg and Denver Democratic Reps. Alec Garnett and Adrienne Benavidez sponsored the bill.

 HB21-1103 Media Literacy Implementation After a year in which the dangers of disinformation became clearer than ever, Colorado lawmakers will take up a bill incorporating media literacy into the state’s reading, writing and civics standards and requiring the state education department to create a resource library for teaching media literacy and offer assistance to schools that ask for it. This bill takes up the recommendations of an advisory committee created by legislation in 2019. Even then, some Republicans worried that media literacy standards would be a ruse to disparage conservative media outlets, and that debate is likely to recur this year.

Democratic Reps. Lisa Cutter of Jefferson County and Barbara McLachlan of Durango and Sens.

Brittany Pettersen, a Lakewood Democrat, and Don Coram, a Montrose Republican, sponsored the bill.  SB21-067 Strengthening Civics Education Citing surveys that find few adults can name the three branches of government or understand how the Constitution works, this bill would require the State Board of Education to review the state’s civics curriculum standards and ensure they adequately address the structures of government and the source documents on which they’re based. This new effort from Republican Sen. Don Coram of Montrose and Sen. Chris Hansen, a Denver Democrat, comes on the heels of legislation requiring that the Holocaust be taught in Colorado schools and that the contributions of people of color and other marginalized groups be better incorporated into civics and history curriculum.

The effort could face resistance from school districts that don’t want new mandates as they grapple with pandemic-related education challenges.

Pandemic diversion is one for the books

man past sixty living alone with a small dog walks to his guest room where a little library of fiction is kept and scans the spines for an option to read as the QUIET second year of DESPERATION a pandemic has him climbing the walls like Gregor Samsa.

1. Written by a woman, this book, later the source of several films (as are a number of entries in the list), tells the story of a young scientist who creates a sapient creature.

2. “A dilemma or difficult circumstance from which there is no escape because of mutually conflicting or dependent condi-

3. It focuses on four anthropomorphized animals, is beautifully illustrated (mine by E.H. Shepard), is considered a children’s book, but is enjoyed by readers of all ages. One of the characters, a European water vole, goes by the name “Rat.” 4. The main character’s surname is Smith. Where he lives the clocks twice a day strike thirteen.

5. “He made the fish fast to bow and stern and to the middle thwart. He was so big it was like lashing a much bigger skiff alongside.”

Well, he didn’t. That was the last I saw of him.”

Written by one of my favorites authors, made into a film, as were several of his other books, but not as successful.

9. She sells evening gloves at Neiman-Marcus.

14. I’d tell you where the book is set but the location is in the title. There’s a cave, an accusation, a trial, a recant, and a happy ending. It didn’t do much for me in high school when it was required reading.

15. It’s a 1930 detective novel originally serialized in the magazine “Black Mask” that’s been made into several film versions, the most famous released 80 years ago.

16. Written by the same author, a more light-hearted detective novel featuring a wealthy married couple who try to locate a missing inventor who is light on his feet.

The right question requires the right response

A

nagging and recurring elbow injury had finally forced my hand to seek medical attention. After meeting with an orthopedic surgeon, the diagnosis was more WINNING than tennis elbow or bursitis, it was WORDS a situation that would require surgery to fix.

With surgery come the preoperative exams such as blood work, chest X-ray, and EKG. AddiMichael Norton tionally, medical clearance was needed by my primary care physician. I also needed to have a negative COVID test within five days of surgery. No problem, I can take care of these things easily. As is my nature, my attitude was great, and I was ready and motivated to have the surgery.

off the list of pre-surgery to-dos. I signed in and waited for my name to be called. As the nurse greeted me, she asked me how I was doing. That’s an easy one I thought, as I answer this question about a dozen times a day. My answer, borrowed from my good friend Jerry Nazzaro, is always, “Great, couldn’t be better if I tried.”

Her response, “Well then, why don’t you try?”

Her answer was so simple, so direct, and yet took me a little by surprise. You see, I have been responding to that question for so many years in the same way and typically people either smile or reply with something such as, “That’s awesome, I wish I felt that good.” But never, “Well then, why don’t you try?”

By responding to the question of how I am doing by saying that I am great and could not be better if I tried, is never meant to be flippant or superficial. It is just something I learned many years ago from my friend Jerry. Jerry is a guy with one of the greatest attitudes I have ever witnessed.

Despite anything he faced, no

matter how big the challenge, he would always reply in that same way, “Great, couldn’t be better if I tried.”

The nurse didn’t initially realize how she threw me off a bit as she just continued getting everything ready for my test. However, as she turned toward me again, and even though I was wearing a mask, she could see the puzzled look on my face. When I shared with her that no one had ever so simply and sincerely challenged my statement regarding how I was doing, she just shrugged as if it were the most natural thing she should have said. And it was.

The test was over quickly, she was kind, gentle, and made it as easy as possible. As I left, I thanked her for making the test so easy, but making my day a little bit harder. Now it was her turn to have that puzzled look on her face. I shared that I thought her question was brilliant and that she now inspired me to want to “try” and be better.

I thought about this as I drove home from the hospital. Is this really the best answer I can give

when someone asks me how I am doing? My nurse, Danielle, was exactly right. I could try to be better no matter how poorly or how amazing my day may be going.

The list of things I could do to try and be better in any given moment started flooding my mind; Call a friend, maybe Jerry; Listen to a motivational podcast; Pray; Call a customer; Better yet, call a prospect; Facetime my children and grandchildren; Take a walk on the beach with my wife. The list was endless. Not that I didn’t know and understand this concept already on some level, but it was a good and much-appreciated reminder.

Through all the moves and life changes, model trains kept Cook grounded.

“It’s my outlet,” he said. “My relaxation. I can focus on them.”

Cook’s precise hands and analytical mind are evident everywhere in his home. His study features scratch-built models of Apollo 11’s lunar lander, and a detailed model of a B-24 Liberator, a heavy bomber of the type his father flew over Europe in World War II. In a basement workshop, he is painstakingly building a wooden model of the USS Constitution.

Between the basement train set and shelves lined with hundreds more locomotives and cars, Cook estimates he’s collected perhaps 5% of Lionel’s golden-era offerings.

Though he and Linda had no children, Cook delights in sharing trains with youngsters. For a generation the couple has held neighborhood open houses to show off Cook’s daunting collection.

He and friends have set up model train displays at museums, trade shows and festivals around the West. It was at one festival where he came to a revelation: On the box for that 1953 train set, his first, was the price tag: $49.

several children, spent half a mortgage payment so their 3-year-old could have a model train like kids back home in America. For years afterwards, living in small houses with four kids, my mom always made space for her son’s big train tables. Those are the sacrifices of love. I have no children, so I pay that love forward.”

Asked what he hopes his trains mean to children, Cook recalled a train display he set up at a craft festival in Colorado Springs.

The development will be a continuation project for Lennar’s Gold Creek Valley community, and home prices are expected to start in the $350,000 range, according to Marshall.

“The plan incorporates very

generous open space tracts along Gold Creek, a community trail and a recreational area, with the gross density a little over two units to the acre,” said Marshall.

A metropolitan district is anticipated to finance the construction of public improvements, and the town will provide municipal services to the property, including police protection.

As the project goes forward there will be opportunity for public input.

“It was a grandmother, a mom and their son, who was 15 or so,” Cook said. “The son was autistic. I asked how long they had lived in the Springs, and the mom said not long — she was going through a rather unpleasant divorce. While we were talking, I was showing the boy the

trains. Letting him blow the whistle.

He was elated, laughing.”

As he told the story, for the first time in a two-hour visit, Cook’s attorney banter broke. He gathered himself as he choked back tears.

“His mom told me: ‘This is the first time in six months I’ve seen my son smile.’ That’s what my parents gave me. That’s what I want to give back.”

From apps and audio tours to dialable docents, many options exist despite pandemic

ike many organizations reliant on in-person interaction, the team at Denver Walking Tours had to rethink nearly everything about their operation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The business has historically operated almost like a nonprofit, with a “pay-what-you-want” business model for its tours and the vast majority of revenue going toward paying its tour guides and covering other operational costs, founder Jill Collins said.

Its biggest customer base has always been the tourists who flocked to its free downtown Denver tour for an affordable introduction to iconic sites like the Colorado Capitol and Union Station.

But with tourism dropping to a trickle and gatherings now being risky, DWT has become one of a growing number of local tour operators that have pivoted to serving a new primary audience: locals looking to enjoy some safe fun out of the house — and maybe learn something new about their city along the way.

What Jaeton Hackley believes is the best part of basketball is probably the same for most players.

“Seeing the ball through the hoop is the best part of basketball in my opinion,” said Hackley, who is a 6-foot junior point guard at Douglas County. “Just watching that ball go through the hoop and it doesn’t matter where it’s from, a three-pointer, layup or anything.”

Hackley has been doing everything so far this season for the Huskies.

After seven games, he was leading the Continental League in scoring with a 19.9 scoring average and his 48 field goals also leads the league. He is third with 5.6 assists a game and second with 2.9 steals.

“First and foremost, Jaeton is a great young man with high character and tremendous work ethic,” said Douglas County coach Clay Comstock. “He has a tremendous ability to impact the game at both ends of the floor.

“He not only leads our team in points and assists but he also get the defensive assignment of guarding our opponents’ best scorer on most nights. He has continued to excel both on the court and in the classroom.”

Hackley has been a prominent part of the Huskies team since his freshman year.

“What has mostly improved is my shooting,” said Hackley.

“When you are playing against faster and bigger guys you have to work on getting your shot off faster and being more consistent.

I’ve improved on that the most and also getting my teammates involved. I am a better passer as well.

“I put in a lot of hours in the

gym perfecting my shot, making it look good, and also getting in the gyms with teammates to make sure they are ready to go. I have a good group of guys around me that want to get better and work hard.”

Hackley relies on his instincts when it comes to making an assist.

“It’s a great feeling to make an assist,” he said. “Getting my teammates involved, to make a nice pass and see them make the shot gets me going too. If I can get my teammates going, we’re a pretty hard team to stop.

“It’s mainly an instinct. I can’t really describe it, when you are playing you just find other players. It’s a good feeling. I’m a pretty unselfish player but this year I’ve realized that I can take a good amount of shots and it is pretty selfish for me not to take those shots and pass them up.”

Douglas County was off to a 5-2 overall start after its first seven games this season and the team has averaged 14 wins over the past three years.

“I’m doing pretty good this season,” Hackley continued. “Getting all my teammates involved has probably been the focal point of my game. When we need a bucket or point I can always get myself going and get a spark going for the team.”

than the cost of a fast food lunch you can download the app, buy the tour and go out and explore the city as an individual on your own time.”

While DWT is one of several Denver walking tour operators that have moved into offering app-based tours during the pandemic, GPSmycity has specialized in offering them for years.

Owner Jim Zhu said that’s an advantage as while all companies in the tour business, including GPSmycity, have seen a significant downturn in business, most people looking to take tours are now seeking out app versions.

The GPSmycity app, which offers hundreds of tours of dozens of cities worldwide, currently features several Denver tours on its app focusing on everything from historic churches and homes to places to eat. There is also a create-your-own tour option that allows users to consult a list of dozens of sites to create their own tour route.

“The tours basically work like a Google Map where it shows you your route step by step and then you are able to click to pull up information about each site along the way,” said Zhou, who notes another advantage is that his app allows tours to be downloaded so they can be accessed even without wifi.

GPSmycity also offers tours of eight other cities in Colorado, including Colorado Springs, Durango and Estes Park.

The ubiquity of cell phones has also allowed for the creation of more interactive tour experiences than would otherwise have been possible. That’s the case for Urban Adventure Quest, a unique busi-

ness whose quests were inspired by the popular TV show “The Amazing Race” and combine elements of a traditional tour with various mental challenges.

“It’s kind of like ‘The Amazing Race’ where we might give you very specific directions to a park and then say find this statue and then once you get to the statue there is a challenge you have to do,” said Urban Adventure Quest owner Christie Walker.

However, unlike in the TV show, the challenges in Urban Adventure Quest are all mental rather than physical, making the quests an appropriate option for families of all kinds.

Similar to GPSmycity, Urban Adventure Quest operates in dozens of cities, and Walker says the pandemic’s impact has been a mixed bag with less people opting for quests in urban locales while interest of quests in smaller tourist escapes has exploded.

But interest in the company’s Denver LoDo and Golden quests has remained steady, even as it has had to stop offering another Denver tour focusing on the Colorado Capitol area and downtown central business district as a result of challenges that have impacted several of their markets in this most unusual year.

“COVID actually hasn’t been as big of a problem as has been all the riots and demonstrations,” said Walker. “In a lot of our cities, statues have been taken down, which is not something we ever would’ve thought about happening. So, we’ve had to do a lot of workarounds and adjustments.”

But even as app- and web-based tour options appear to be best suited to meet the moment, some companies have continued with their in-person tours after making some adjustments necessitated by

the pandemic and found there is still an appetite for the experience they provide.

That’s true of Denver Terrors, which now limits the capacity of its tour of haunted sites of Capitol Hill and requires both tour guides and guests to wear masks even though the tour does not go inside any buildings.

With those precautions in place, owner Chayna Sellers feels her tours are actually one of the safer entertainment options currently available.

“I think the thing that sets it apart is it is an outdoor activity, so there is plenty of room to keep your distance from people,” Sellers said. “It’s a good way to get out and stretch your legs while adhering to the guidelines while learning some interesting things.”

Here is a look at some of the current options for pandemic-friendly tours in and around Denver: Denver Architecture Foundation Tours The Denver Architecture Foundation is currently offering two free audio tours: “Civic Center Park: A Speerian Play” and “Downtown Denver: A Game of City and Empire Builders.” Those tours can be accessed and downloaded at denverarchitecture.org/audio . The foundation is also offering limited guided tours on select dates. Recent offerings have included tours focusing on downtown Denver alleyways and the historic Baker neighborhood. Dreaming Denver It’s a bit hard to explain what’s in store for those who take this unique audio tour created via a partnership between Musem of Contemporary Art Denver and poet Mathias Svalina, During the free tour, participants can visit 12 sites in

the downtown Denver tour and dial 720-845-5413 to listen to a “dream” related to the site created by Svalina. For example, one dream takes place at the Big Blue Bear statue at the convention center and involves the statue coming to life. There are also 18 tour sites located outside the downtown core. Historic Denver Historic Denver is currently offering multiple tour options. Current offerings include limited-capacity tours built around neighborhoods such as Curtis Park and themes such as women’s suffrage. There is also a dial-a-docent program where a docent can walk individuals or groups through a tour over the phone. More information at historicdenver.org/tours-events.

Scootours Denver This company will begin offering two-hour guided scooter tours of Denver again in March. Each tour experience includes about an hour of practice riding as well as a twohour tour. Tours can be booked at scootoursdenver.com.

Golden History Museum and Park Walking Tour This website-based tour consists of information about 16 historic sites in central Golden, including sites related to Jolly Rancher and Coors, which both originated in Golden. It takes about 45 minutes to visit all the sites on the 1.5-mile tour. The tour can be accessed for free at goldenhistory.org/learn-do/ walkingtour.

Boulder Walks The city of Boulder offers several self-guided walking tours on its website at bouldercolorado.gov/ transportation/boulder-walks.
