Two schools get security upgrades Singing Hills, Running Creek get free improvements from Illinois-based company

Singing Hills and Running Creek elementary schools recently received security enhancements, free of charge, thanks to Convergint, an Illinoisbased security firm with an office in Centennial. The enhancements were part of Convergint’s Secure, Train, Educate and Protect (STEP) Up for Schools initiative. The company has donated more than $1 million in employee time, and $100,000 in security equipment this year, during its annual social responsibility day.

The upgrades included cameras being placed in strategic locations around school grounds to allow staff inside to be aware of what’s going on outside the school. Primary entrances were included, and staff now have the ability to program doors to function at their discretion, in the event of deter, detect and delay type of situations.

Carriage Shoppes Tea Room is class operation Elizabeth business offers fashionable location for food, beverages

L

inda Fedraw and her husband, Ken, opened the Carriage Shoppes Tea Room on Main Street in Elizabeth on April 7, 2018. They both retired from conventional jobs but felt they were too young to truly retire.

Prior to the tea room, the industrious couple bought and ran a bed-andbreakfast in Michigan that was built in 1895. After renovating the historic building, they felt as though they had been born in 1895. Despite the initial expenditures, both physical and monetary, Linda and Ken ran it for 11 years, working harder than they had in conventional employment.

After selling the bed-and-breakfast and moving to Colorado, Linda found she could only clean their apartment so many times in a day and the tea room became a needed outlet. Ken, an electrical engineer, was skeptical, but Linda and her daughter Tammy were determined. However, it took a lot of work for her dream of a Victorianstyle tea room to materialize.

Whether it is high tea or an afternoon snack, the presentation and quality of the food never waivers. Linda offers a full lunch menu that includes creative salads, croissant sandwiches, cold strawberry soup during the summer months and hot foods to ward off

the cold in the winter.

No matter the season, loyal customers come for the ambience as well as the food and will often wear hats or fascinators when they dress to the T’s for high teas. This is especially true during the Christmas season when Linda and her staff will join in the fun and even wear fascinators. Linda is always ready to embrace creative opportunities; so, during the latest royal wedding Linda made crumpets and displayed a picture of the royal couple in the tea room and again wore her fascinator.

Linda describes herself as OCD, but it is more about attention to detail and truly caring that her guests have the finest experience she can provide. She feels the tea room really fits her and her many loyal customers agree.

Linda spoke to the Elbert County News about the tea room.

What type of food do you offer?

We offer a full lunch menu, salads, sandwiches and a cold strawberry soup, grandma’s potato salad (with radishes, etc.), a Berrylicious fruit bowl, small appetite foods such as grilled cheese panini or half a premium salad and, of course, dessert items and scones. The current menu is online.

What is served at high tea?

The guest receives their own tea pot and choice of tea.

Fire district administrative services to move STAFF REPORT

Residents who have stopped by the main fire station in Elizabeth might have noticed a number of firefighters working alongside administrative personnel.

The former auto repair facility that was relocated from the old Lowry Air Force Base in Aurora was moved in on trailers in the late 1970s, according to a news release, and back then it housed the fire district’s original rescue trucks and pumpers.

As the district has grown, additional truck bays, sleeping quarters and training/meeting space has been added.

However, the district’s creative use of the close quarters is becoming more difficult.

To help solve some of the space constraints, the administrative support functions of the Elizabeth Fire District will soon move into a recently purchased office building just east of

the main station, the release said.

Fire Chief T.J. Steck said in the release that the change in venue is necessary to make room for additional firefighter staffing in the fire station.

“As the community grows, so do the calls for service. This means we must increase our capabilities to support the additional service needs,” Steck said in the news release.

During regular strategic planning workshops, the fire district board of directors determined that the space constraints limit the number of firefighters who can work at one time, the release said, and without a significant addition, that problem cannot be corrected.

“In some cases, we are lucky enough to have the personnel to fully staff our trucks, but not enough space for sleeping quarters and offices,” Steck said in the release. “There have been many times that our responders had to sleep overnight in chairs in our dayroom.”

After meeting with architects to look at options for more bedrooms, it became clear that the administrative offices would need to move out to make room, the release said. However, the cost of new construction was too expensive to consider, and the site of the fire station did not support another addition, the release said.

When a small office building east of the station came on the market recently, the space dilemma became solvable, the release said.

The first district purchased the building at 146 N. Elbert St. for $440,000, which was below market value, the release said, and the purchase allows the district to expand its administrative support functions while staying close to the main fire station.

At nearly a third of the cost of new construction, the new space will house all administrative positions, including the fire chief, training chief and fire

marshal, along with the financial and human resources departments.

The fire district will use new construction impact fees to cover the cost of the new office site, meaning no additional property tax revenue is needed for the purchase, the release said. The impact fees were created in 2016 to ensure that new development would help pay its own way, so residents would not be tasked with financing growth-related impacts such as this project, the release said.

The separation between operations and administration is common in fire departments as they grow, according to the release, but Steck does not want residents to worry. According to the release, the move should enhance the department’s efficiency in taking care of the community.

“Our administrative offices address may be changing, but our service to the community will remain on the highest level of expectation,” Steck said.

Work at the two schools was finished the same day, and according to Fisher, students and parents shouldn’t notice a difference to the look of the school when they return to class in the fall.

Shane Pynes, head of safety/security for Elizabeth School District, said the school district was appreciative of the donation, and that when it comes to keeping students, staff and community members safe at school, more security is always better.

“These enhancements are one more small piece of a larger district strategy to ensure that we’re better prepared for a myriad of issues,” said Pynes.

CDOT preparing for busy travel season on Interstate-25 project

It’s officially one of the busiest travel seasons of the year for the portion of Interstate 25 running between Castle Rock and Monument, and the entire 18-mile stretch is under construction, making it the largest road construction site in the state.

That’s why Colorado Department of Transportation officials are reminding the public of key safety protocols when traveling the corridor and highlighting what construction activity they can expect to see in the months to come.

“We are ramping up big time,” spokeswoman Tamara Rollison said of the project.

The department expects traffic to increase by approximately 8% over the summer, a time when RVs and boats frequent the corridor combined with increased traffic to and from the annual Renaissance Festival in Larkspur, said spokesman Bob Wilson.

CDOT is urging drivers to slow down, leave ample room between them and the vehicle in front of them, and to never stop their vehicle on the interstate. Expect narrower lanes and shoulders, Rollison said, and stay attentive. She named distracted driving as one of the leading causes of crashes in the area. Drivers will notice lane shifts as well.

“Things in construction zones can change fast,” she said.

The $350 million project began in September 2018 near Castle Rock.

Work is on track to wrap up in the fall of 2022, Rollison said. Crews are expanding the interstate by one express lane in each direction, repairing and replacing bridges, constructing wildlife crossings and widening shoulders.

All Denver Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs have kicked off their Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising campaign to help treat local children who are sick or injured.

All money raised during the Denver campaign directly benefits Children’s Hospital Colorado to fund critical treatments, pediatric medical equipment, research and charitable care.

The Walmart and Sam’s Club campaign runs through July 7.

To date, Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, members and customers in Denver have raised $15.1 million for Children’s Hospital Colorado, most of

Feds consider new tools in fight against robocalls

We know that mental health, substance abuse, workforce training and other programs are the best way to help offenders lead a more productive life when they get out of the Arapahoe County jail. But the current facility isn’t up to the task.

Today, about 450 inmates each day are experiencing a mental health issue. That’s 64 more inmates than the entire jail was built to house decades ago.

Federal regulators voted June 6 to give phone companies the right to block unwanted calls without getting customers’ permission first.

The Federal Communications Commission’s move could make call-blocking widespread and help consumers dodge annoying robocalls, which have exploded into a problem that pesters Americans on the level of billions of calls a month. One caveat: Phone companies don’t actually have to do anything, and they could start charging you if they do — just as they now charge for some caller ID features and other extras.

The FCC expects phone companies to offer these tools for free, but it doesn’t require them to.

The rise in debt collectors, telemarketers and, most worrisome, fraudsters ringing up consumers’ phones have led the FCC and Congress to push phone companies to do more. The companies have been slow to act against such automated calls on their own.

Robocalls have increased as cheap software makes it easy to make mass K calls. Scammers don’t care if you’ve added your number to the government’s Do Not Call list, and enforcement is negligible. There are 5 billion per month in the U.S., according to call-blocker YouMail. That works out to 14 calls per person.

The June 6 FCC vote could potentially be a powerful counter against unwanted calls. While call-blocking apps already exist, you have to turn K them on or ask for them. Now, along with clarifying that both wireless and landline companies can block unwanted calls without asking customers first, the FCC said that wireless carriers are also allowed to block all callers who aren’t on a customer’s contact list. You would have to request that from your phone L company.

On the flip side, the measure might inadvertently lead to blocking of automated calls about flight changes, school closings and appointment reminders, Republican Commissioner Michael O’Rielly warned.

Hey kids, life is nice without that device

was standing at the crossroads a few years ago. Along came a fellow with a guitar.

Said his name was Robert Johnson and that he had QUIET something to sell, but DESPERATION not to me.

I told him, “Me too.”

He gave me a smile and then he played a tune. I found out later it was a song called “Dust My Broom,” which makes no sense grammatically, but it sure sounded Craig Marshall good.

Smith After he was through playing, he said, “What are you asking for in exchange?”

I told him I had a strange request.

I said I wanted resistance.

“Resistance to what?”

“Excessive social media usage.”

He said, “Man, what are you talking about?’

I told him I wanted mental health.

He said, “You know what that means, don’t you? You’ll have to give up your phone.”

I told him, “I can do it.”

New research shows that “phones raise student anxiety,” according to an Associated Press article written by Carolyn Thompson.

She cites a National Education Association newsletter that labeled the anxiety a “mental health tsunami.”

She said, “Research now points to smartphone-driven social media as one of the biggest drivers of (student) stress.”

She referred to a South Carolina high school teacher’s classroom experiment that had each student document every smartphone notification they received for one hour.

“One girl got close to 150 Snapchat notifications,” the teacher reported.

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State, said, “What a lot of teens told me is that social media and their phones feel mandatory.”

An editorial in the American

Academy of Pediatrics’ journal stated, “Aberrant and/or excessive social media usage” could contribute to teenage “feelings of isolation, depressive symptoms, and anxiety.”

I have not seen a teenager in public in the past 20 years who wasn’t on the phone, holding a phone, kissing a phone or dancing with a phone.

A school in Maine, Belfast Area High, tried an experiment of its own that failed miserably.

No cellphones for a single day.

Guess what percentage took part?

I got what I wanted at the crossroads. My mental health seems fine.

All I know is I don’t have a speck of anxiety when I realize I have left home without my phone.

And I don’t have an iota of anxiety when I haven’t checked my messages for 10 minutes.

It might help to be enormously unpopular in the first place.

Keep yourself humble to avoid a stumble

O

ne of my favorite things to see is a humble winner. Not only a humble winner, but also a humble leader who willingly shares the victory and gives credit to the team around them, WINNING their friend, or a family member. In a WORDS world where outrageous behavior seems to garner the most attention, I still try and purposely find examples of those humble winners out there who let their actions and results speak Michael Norton for themselves and show gratitude and appreciation for those who have helped along the way.

Now I love entertaining and exciting events. It’s good to see people fired up about their achievements and success.

As a matter of fact, sometimes those feats are worthy of our applause.

The walk-off home run, the hole in one, the artist and song we love winning the Grammy, the movie we

enjoyed so much winning the Oscar, the salesperson on our team who just closed a massive opportunity and so many other examples. I love it, I applaud it, and I appreciate it.

What I appreciate more, however, is when the athlete thanks their teammates and coaching staff or acknowledges their family that has supported them along the way. The celebrity who receives their award on stage and gives thanks to God, their family, and their co-stars. The golfer who tips their hat, picks up their ball, and moves on to the next hole.

When things seem to be going really well, maybe even when things are going fantastic for us personally or professionally, it becomes easy for us to get caught up in our own success.

Adoration and praise go right to our head, and we forget our humility.

Conversely, when things are tough and going bad, we could become susceptible to blaming others, events beyond our control, and conditions for our loss. We hate losing so much that our humbleness goes out the window and the finger-pointing begins.

Humbleness is like gratitude in a way. The more we show gratitude for what we already have and who we have in our lives, typically we will have more to be grateful for. Well the more we weave a humble nature into our winning and leading, the more we will win, and we will build a loyal following of people who want to work with us or become a part of our team.

Exciting entertainment and outrageous events are awesome and fun.

And they become even more incredible when the team, people, or person receive their trophy, their award, or their commission with confidence and humbleness. Confident humbleness is indeed a character trait is appreciated

After the funeral — a look at being ready

T

he cause of death was influenza. For those of you following the story of my father-inlaw, he spent nine weeks in the hospital due to the flu. While it is not unusual for a FINANCIAL 90-year old to pass away, these circumSTRATEGIES stances were bizarre to experience. First the flu, then a fall, then complications with swallowing, and a myriad of everything that could go wrong, did.

While no one ever spoke about the fact he would never go home again, we kind of talked around the subject. “Hey Dad, do you still have the safe deposit box?” “Whatever happened to Grandma’s Hummels?” “Did I see a safe in the basement? Do you remember the combination?” It was a little private -investigating along with ice chips and IVs. Everyone knew he was not going home except him, so it was a bit awkward.

Luckily, he had made his funeral arrangements when his wife died and most decisions around the ceremony and burial were in place. Except, don’t ever request a “duplicate of my wife’s arrangements” unless you want a pink lining in your casket.

Luckily, we caught that one.

We were in no hurry to dig into the will and estate documents, but it turned out that cleaning out the house was one of the best ways to mourn.

All of the kids and grandkids were together working. We were laughing at old pictures and picking out mementos.

As we came across financial statements, we quickly saw he had beneficiaries listed on everything and there would be no need to open an estate or go through probate. Another toast to Dad! A death in the family reminds us that life is fleeting and there is no reason to delay getting your own house in order. If you do not have a trust, you should consider doing the following: • List POD (Pay on Death) on all bank accounts and CDs • Add a signer to your safe deposit box. It will be sealed instantly without one.

• Put TOD (Transfer on Death) on all investments. Consolidate your mutual funds and stock certificates into a brokerage account, then this will be easier.

• Add a beneficiary deed on the house title.

• Take your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) early in the year.

If you pass away without taking it, there may need to be an estate opened to accept the RMD. • Buy a shredder and start using it.

Don’t keep old, confidential papers around for someone to try and determine if it is still valid or not.

• Consider putting a family member on the car title.

• Identify any collectibles so they don’t end up in the garage sale.

• Leave a list of passwords, safe combinations, where extra keys are, etc.

For those of you who have a trustbased estate plan, make sure every-

thing you wish to pass correctly is either titled in the name of your trust or lists the trust or individuals as beneficiary.

Then spend as much quality time with your loved ones as you can. You can create a legacy of family values just by sharing stories and time together. These will be the most precious things you leave behind.

Stressed out? Your dog may feel it too

When dog owners go through a stressful period, they’re not alone in feeling the pressure — their dogs feel it too, a new study suggests.

Dog owners experiencing long bouts of stress can transfer it to their dogs, scientists report in a study published June 6 in Scientific Reports. The Swedish researchers focused on 58 people who own border collies or Shetland sheepdogs.

They examined hair from the dog owners and their dogs, looking at the concentrations of a hormone called cortisol, a chemical released into the bloodstream and absorbed by hair follicles in response to stress.

Depression, excessive physical exercise and unemployment are just a few examples of stress that can influence the amount of cortisol found in your hair, said Lina Roth of Linkoping University in Sweden.

Roth and her team found that the patterns of cortisol levels in the hair of dog owners closely matched that found in their dogs in both winter and summer months, indicating their stress levels were in sync. She thinks the owners are influencing the dogs rather than the other way around because several human personality traits appear to affect canine cortisol levels.

The researchers don’t know what causes the synchronization in cortisol levels between humans and their pups. But a hint might lie in the fact that the link is stronger with competitive dogs than in pet pooches.

The bond formed between owner and competitive dogs during training may increase the canines’ emotional reliance on their owners, she said. That in turn could increase the degree of synchronization.

But why do people influence their dogs rather than vice versa?

Perhaps people are ``a more central part of the dog’s life, whereas we humans also have other social networks,’’ Roth said in an email.

said Alicia Buttner, director of animal behavior with the Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha. `New evidence is continually emerging, showing that people and their dogs have incredibly close bonds that resemble the ones that parents share with their children,’’ she said in an email.

But she said there isn’t enough evidence to assume that the influence goes only one way; it may go both ways. ``It’s not just as simple as owner gets stressed, dog gets stressed,’’ she said.

Many other factors could affect a person or dog’s stress levels and possibly even dampen them, she said. Buttner said cortisol levels don’t necessarily indicate ``bad’’ stress. They instead can indicate a good experience like getting ready to go for a walk, she said.

Roth and her team plan to investigate whether other dog breeds will react to their owners the same way.

In the meantime, she offered advice to minimize how much stress dog owners may be causing their pets.

Dogs that play more show fewer signs of being stressed, she said.

So ``just be with your dog and have fun,’’ Roth said.

Parker Days 2019 came and went June 6-9 bringing with it a weekend of fun as summer draws nearer.

Thousands turned out from across the Denver metro area to celebrate one of the first major fair and carnivals of the year. Attendees strolled hundreds of booths, including a flight simulator and Nerf Turf area for kids to blow off steam.

The community’s flagship summer event has grown every year and has drawn more and more people from outside the town to experience Parker life for a weekend. It’s one of Douglas County’s largest events, slightly trailing only the county fair in magnitude.

Dennis Houston, president and CEO of the Parker Area Chamber of Commerce, which puts on the event, said it has become an event for everyone.

“You don’t have to pay to get in, you can bring your own water, you can bring your own food, so if you think about it, it’s an opportunity to bring your family and not have to invest,” Houston said. “We really try to keep it a community-based festival.”

What began as a smaller celebration at its beginning 42 years ago has turned into a four-day spectacle of carnival rides, funnel cakes and live music. For newcomers, it offers a slice of a small-town fair without having to stray too far from the city. Josh Krall,

“We’ve lived here for three years,” Krall said, “and Parker Days has been a tradition every year.”

About 272,000 people attended last year’s event, Houston said. Numbers from the 2019 Parker Days were unavailable at press time, but the numbers have grown with each year.

This year, the chamber streamlined the ticket system and made all concerts free to keep with the spirit of a “come one, come all” event that, Houston said, is like a brochure for

the town’s signature homey feel.

As part of this year’s “Do Good, Feel Good” theme, two stations allowed residents to get to know each other better and to express appreciation or compliment one another. On June 8, the event opened early to people with special needs to give them a chance to enjoy the rides without the anxiety of a massive crowd.

One of the new draws for this year’s event was a Nerf Turf area, where kids — or adults — could load up with foam Nerf darts and fire them out of plastic guns at each other in a dodgeball-type game. The typical carnival

rides, street performers and miles of food trucks and booths provided something for everyone.

The two massive carnival set-ups, each one sandwiching Mainstreet on the north and south ends, boasted rides and games for kids and adults.

In between the two carnivals, local business tents lined Mainstreet and local performers caught visitors’ ears as they walked by.

“People who come to Parker Days have been coming for a long time,” Houston said, “so we kind of need to keep it fresh and keep it new and offer new pockets of exciting new things.”

Symposium for those working with trafficked, abused director, Deeper Walk International, said in a news release. “Restoring the Shattered is a symposium for those who wish to understand the unique challenges of ministering to the deeply wounded and sexually trafficked.”

10 Ways to Love your Brain June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month STAFF REPORT

This June, during Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association is hoping to raise awareness of this devastating disease by sharing 10 Ways to Love your Brain.

Nearly 6 million people in the United States, including 73,000 Coloradans, are living with Alzheimer’s disease, according to a news release. The sixth-leading cause of death and the only leading disease without a prevention, treatment or cure, Alzheimer’s kills more Americans every year than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

“Research is still evolving, but evidence is strong that people can reduce

their risk of cognitive decline by making key lifestyle changes,” Amelia Schafer, executive director of the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, said in the release. “Based on this research, we have developed 10 Ways to Love Your Brain, a collection of tips that can reduce the risk of cognitive decline.”

According to the release, these habits will help achieve maximum benefits for the brain and body: 1. Break a sweat: Engage in regular cardiovascular exercise that elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain and body. Several studies have found an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline.

2. Hit the books: Formal education in any stage of life will help reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

3. Butt out: Evidence shows that smoking increases risk of cognitive

decline. Quitting smoking can reduce that risk to levels comparable to those who have not smoked.

4. Follow your heart: Evidence shows that risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke — obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes — negatively impact your cognitive health.

5. Heads up: Brain injury can raise risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Wear a seat belt, use a helmet when playing contact sports or riding a bike, and take steps to prevent falls.

6. Fuel up right: Eat a healthy and balanced diet that is lower in fat and higher in vegetables and fruit to help reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

Although research on diet and cognitive function is limited, certain diets may contribute to risk reduction.

7. Catch some ZZZs: Not getting enough sleep due to conditions like insomnia or sleep apnea may result in problems with memory and thinking.

8. Take care of your mental health: Some studies link a history of depression with increased risk of cognitive decline, so seek medical treatment if you have symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns. Also, try to manage stress.

9. Stump yourself: Challenge and activate your mind. Build a piece of furniture. Complete a jigsaw puzzle. Do something artistic. Play games, such as bridge, that make you think strategically. Challenging your mind may have short- and long-term benefits for your brain.

10. Buddy up: Staying socially engaged may support brain health. Pursue social activities that are meaningful.

Find ways to be part of your community. If you love animals, consider volunteering at a local shelter. If you enjoy singing, join a local choir. Or share activities with friends and family.
