Something worthy of man’s best friend Magic Dog Shop in Elizabeth is now part of Bentley’s Pet Stuff

For the pet owner who considers his or her animal a member of the family, Magic Dog Shop in Elizabeth — now part of the Bentley’s Pet Stuff operation — is the “natural” choice for those who want natural food, supplements and accessories.

Shop owner Claudia Henning’s journey in the world of pet supplies began close to home.

“Back in the ‘90s, I had a flat-coated retriever named Ridley who became very ill — and he was very gassy!” she said. “So that started the education process.”

Her research led her to natural, raw food.

“Within days of starting to change Ridley’s diet to raw, his gas issues dissipated.”

“I am a firm believer that nutrition contributes 70 percent toward the health of our pets, while genetics is 30 percent,” Henning says on the Magic Dog website.

Henning decided to open Magic Dog Shop when she realized there was a lack of pet retail in the area. Initially,

“Within a year, people were asking me, `What do you feed your dog and cat?’ ” she said. “I tried selling the food on a very small scale and voilà!” She eventually let the grooming and training portion go and dedicated the shop exclusively to pet retail.

She is mindful to keep the inventory at Magic Dog specialized.

Aurora facility under construction has had huge cost overruns

The Justice Department is considering whether to investigate allegations that Department of Veterans Affairs executives lied to Congress to conceal massive cost overruns at a $1.7 billion VA hospital under construction in Aurora.

The FBI’s Washington field office is reviewing the allegations, the Justice Department said in a letter to Congress. The letter was dated Dec. 9 and made public Dec. 13.

The FBI is part of the Justice Department.

Lawmakers accuse VA executives of lying when they testified before the House Veterans Affairs Committee in 2013 and 2014 about the cost of the hospital in Aurora. The current projected price tag is nearly triple the 2014 estimate.

The VA declined to comment on the lawmakers’ allegations. In a written statement, the department said it has

already acknowledged mistakes on the project and made changes to its construction practices.

A bipartisan group of 21 lawmakers on the Veterans Affairs Committee asked for an investigation in September. The request came after the VA’s internal watchdog office said Glenn Haggstrom, formerly the department’s top official in charge of construction projects, knew the hospital cost was soaring but didn’t tell Congress.

The lawmakers also asked the Justice Department to look into congressional testimony by Stella Fiotes, director of the VA’s Office of Construction and Facilities Management.

Haggstrom and Fiotes told the committee that no cost overruns were expected and that the project would be finished at or near its budget of about $604 million, according to transcribed excerpts from the committee.

Haggstrom retired in 2015, one day after he was questioned by VA officials about what went wrong, department officials have said.

Veterans Affairs Committee chairman Jeff Miller, R-Fla., said the Justice Department should investigate the two officials’ testimony.

Investigations into the hospital project have said mismanagement, delays and lax oversight by the VA added hundreds of millions of dollars to the cost and delayed it by years.

Construction on the 184-bed facility is expected to be done in January 2018.

It will replace an aging, overcrowded facility still in use in Denver.

Education foundation aims to help teachers Group looking for new members

On Dec. 9 — just in time for the holiday season — 24 teachers of the Elizabeth School District were awarded grant money by the Elizabeth Education Foundation. This year the EEF, which was founded in 1998, awarded more than $9,800 in grants.

Recipients are chosen by a volunteer committee, which painstakingly spends several hours in the decision-making process.

“We run it through a rubric and play out everything,” said EEF President Mary Smith. There have been occasions when the committee considered a request from a teacher who had one of their own children in their class. “At that point we’d step out of that decision,” Smith said.

“Personal bias is definitely avoided.”

“The process to apply is very simple,” Smith said.

Teachers request the money for basic things such as books, but many have handson experience in mind.

Among the recipients this year, Katie Quinn and Rachel Donnelly received grants for ceramic glazes in their art classes. Choir director Allison Wagstaff and Theater Arts teacher

Jennifer Barclay each received $500 for speakers and amplifiers. At the middle school, Lisa Mullins was awarded $500 to use on four Sphero Sparks robots, and kindergarten teacher Kayla Jensen at Legacy Academy received a grant for for math manipulatives.

The EEF is also in charge of the STARS Program, which awards scholarships to 50 students in April.

“STARS stands for Students Taking Academics and Responsibility Seriously,” Smith said. Students are nominated by their teachers to receive the scholarships.

The scholarships are awarded at the STARS Banquet, which takes “considerable time to prepare,” she said. “We really need volunteers who can give about three hours a month,” in addition to the monthly board meetings.

The EEF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Both the grant and STARS programs are funded through the purchase of reloadable Safeway and Kings Soopers gift cards, AmazonSmile and various community sports nights such as an Avalanche ticket night. She also solicits sponsors to help with the scholarship program.

Smith said the EEF board is “in need of new blood” since she and other board members will be reaching the end of their tenure as their children graduate.

“Ideally we’d have people who are retired educators,” she said. “It’s on their own time, so it’s pretty easy.”

The board meets for one to two hours on the second Thursday of each month in the Elizabeth C-1 District Administration room. For more information about the programs or to volunteer, email info@elizabethef.org.

“There’s a symbiotic relationship. I know that sales tax helps the community.” She also employs one full-time and three part-time workers.

Henning’s talents have recently been tapped by Bentley’s Pet Stuff, a collection of independent stores with six locations in the Denver area, and two more to open soon.

She will be working full-time to assist with training and sales. With this transition, Magic Dog Shop officially changed its name and ownership Dec. 12 after being acquired by Bentley’s Pet Stuff.

Henning saw that the stores’ philosophies were the same, and felt assured that Magic Dog would continue to serve the needs of the community in the same way it has for over a decade. The staff at Magic Dog will also remain the same.

Magic Dog (now Bentley’s Pet Stuff) is located at 796 E. Kiowa Ave. in Elizabeth, in the Countryside Village Marketplace.

Gift of you may be the very best present you can offer

ere we are again at that time of year where most of our shopping is finished and we are gathering with family and friends to celebrate the holidays. We exchange and open gifts that have been carefully wrapped, and in some cases like mine, not so carefully or artistically wrapped.

Many times we receive a gift that we really wanted or needed, and sometimes we receive a gift that someone else thought we wanted or needed. And there is really nothing like the feeling of knowing that you have just been re-gifted or you are already planning how you will re-gift the same gift to someone else. And if re-gifting is not

your thing, there is always the gift receipt and you can exchange the gift for something that may be more appropriate for you or at least in your right size.

There is a gift that can be given, will more than likely never be re-gifted or exchanged, and is probably more appreciated than any store-bought gift that can be purchased, and that is the gift of you. The gift of you can be given in so many ways and it can also be a gift that keeps on giving once you start.

All in all, taxes have been on the rise. Therefore it is important to take every advantage to reduce your tax bill for 2016. Here are a few last-minute things you can do that will help reduce your tax liability.

Consider funding an IRA Patricia Kummer account. Most employees who have a 401(k) plan have forgotten they might also be eligible for an IRA as well. If you are married filing jointly and only one spouse has a 401(k) plan, the other spouse may be eligible for a $5,500 deduction or $6,500 if over the age of 50. Check the IRS limits for adjusted gross incomes that range from $184,000 to $194,000. Those with two qualified employer plans with incomes under $98,000 can both write off the full contribution. This may be enough to reduce other factors, such as eligibility for the education tax credits. It is not a good idea to over-fund an IRA where you don’t get the tax deduction. There is no reason to be subject to IRS restrictions when there is no deduction on after-tax deposits. Consider funding a Roth IRA instead.

Self-employed individuals may be eligible for a SEP (Simplified Employee Pension).

These limits can be substantially higher

than an IRA based on business or consulting income. Most plans allow for deductible contributions similar to 401(k) limits — which for 2016 are $18,000 with an overage-50 catch-up provision of another $6,000.

For higher-income earners, you may also be eligible for a profit-sharing contribution up to 25 percent of your business profit up to $59,000, depending on your business structure.

It is crucial to get with your tax or financial advisor immediately to see what plans and limits you are eligible for.

Consider maximizing your health savings accounts for the year if they have not already been funded. You may be eligible if you had a high-deductible health-insurance plan starting no later than Dec. 1. An individual can contribute a tax-deductible amount of $3,350 with a $1,000 catch-up provision for anyone over age 55 by Dec. 31.

Households with one spouse on family coverage can contribute $6,750 plus the catchup for over age 55.

The penalty for not having health insurance increased this year to $695 per person or 2 percent of income. You can apply during open enrollment this month to avoid this penalty in 2017 as well.

You can fund college savings plans that are eligible for the state income tax deduction for children or grandchildren through www.collegeinvest.org.

If you pay quarterly estimated tax payments, consider paying your fourth-quarter state taxes before year-end. Then you will be able to deduct it on your Schedule A next April.

Castle Rock nonprofit offers alternative PTSD treatments Free acupuncture clinics available to veterans and their caretakers

Air Force veteran Jake Jacobs recently sat in a dimmed, incense-filled room as Marty Albring of Four Directions Wellness Foundation poked needles into his ears.

By the time she finished, it looked as though an orange porcupine had attached to each side of Jacobs’ head.

The approximate 1-inch needles with orange tips protruded like quills from his ears in every direction.

Although Jacobs at first didn’t like the thought of all those needles, he now receives regular acupuncture treatments from Albring at the Castle Rock center.

Despite the appearance, the needles don’t hurt, he said, and the relaxation effects of the auricular acupuncture he receives help control the symptoms of his autoimmune disease.

Jacobs undergoes the therapy to curb nerve pain. But he’s recruiting area veterans to try Albring’s acupunture for many reasons — particularly in the hopes of treating PostTraumatic Stress Disorder.

The nonprofit has begun to offer free, twice-monthly clinics for veterans to try the alternative treatment method. It’s aimed at veterans suffering from PTSD, but the therapy can treat them and their caretakers for a number of conditions, Albring said.

Those include anxiety, depression or illnesses like Jacobs’.

The next clinic will be from 4 p.m.

Jacobs, a Parker resident, was assigned to a base in southern Australia from 1981 to 1986. He was diagnosed with idiopathic sensory-motor polyneuropathy in 2012.

“Idio means unknown cause,” Albring said.

“Big long words to basically say they don’t know,” Jacobs said.

The illness affects sensory and motor nerves of the peripheral nervous system, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, but no cause is known.

Symptoms include pain in the hands and feet, weakening of the muscles and trouble with balance or walking.

Jacobs sought alternative treatment methods, he said, when his doctors with the Department of Veterans Af-

fairs told him they’d done what they could for his progressing disease.

“The two things that seem to be a staple in giving me some effort of relief is the acupuncture and the neuro-massages,” he said.

Jacobs has tried a slew of experimental medications and alternative treatments. The medications are hit and miss. The neuromuscular massages help, as does acupuncture in providing temporary relief, he said.

To show his gratitude, Jacobs has helped Albring and her husband, John Anderson, who serves on the nonprofit’s board of directors, with technical support for Four Directions Wellness Foundation website. Jacobs has also put the word out with local American Legion chapters, the VA and various veterans groups.

Four Directions Wellness Foundation received its nonprofit classification in June and models its services after Acupuncturists Without Borders, Albring said. The organization brings acupuncture to areas hit by natural disasters, human conflict, poverty or social injustice.

Albring began practicing in Castle Rock during the 1990s. She took her work to Georgia for 12 years and then returned approximately three years ago. She is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and licensed in Colorado and Georgia.

Many treatments considered alternative in the Unites States are conventional in other countries.

Denver Art Museum offers rare variety of exhibitions

Families can visit that galaxy “far, far away,” 16th-century Venice, the Japanese fashion scene, and/ or the Southwestern Indian country in a half day at the Denver Art Museum.

“Star Wars and the Power of Costume,” on the second floor of the Hamilton Sonya Ellingboe Building, is a specially-ticketed exhibit and requires some early planning, because tickets are selling out for many time periods. Race winner comes from way behind Driver in vintage series starts last after setback in qualifying

Scot Morton was beginning to feel like he might be snakebit once again.

Morton, a Douglas County resident who started vintage racing four years ago along with his wife Paula, did not qualify because of mechanical failures in the past two Sportscar Vintage Racing Association national championship events.

He qualified second in this year’s SVRA Nationals at the Circuit of Americas facility in Austin, Texas, but then ran out of fuel on the final lap of the qualifying race that determined starting positions for the featured race.

“At first I wasn’t sure I had run out of fuel and thought, ‘oh no, here we go again,’” Morton said. “After I got that thought out of my head, I realized I just ran out of gas on the last lap.”

Since Morton did not finish the qualifying race, he had to start last in the main event to determine the national champion, and he was hoping to avoid being snakebit.

He eluded a wreck in the main event, won the Group 5 7 race on Nov. 5 and was crowned the national champion.

My main competitor (defending champion and top qualifier Cal Meeker) was at the front. His car broke and he crashed into the wall right at the start.

“He hit another car and another car swerved to miss him. The car that was swerving hit me. He barely tapped me and cracked some of the fiberglass on the side and I was able to continue after the race was red-flagged for 15 minutes. As Cal was spinning, I just barely got by as he went spinning across the track. It was a close call.”

Morton’s margin of victory was 1.964 seconds with an average speed of 87.078 in his Ralt RT4-CanAm. He had the best lap time of 2:16.177 on the 3.5-mile loop with a top speed of more than 160 mph.

Morton, 58, raced a variety of vintage cars in his 20s and 30s and then took a 25-year break for family obligations. He and his wife Paula, who is the crew chief for the couple’s Scooteria Motorsports team, raised a daughter and now have two grandsons.

They purchased a car four years ago that belonged to formula racer John Lloyd.

Paula, 52, is a consulting director for Eventus Solutions Group and enjoys being Scot’s crew chief. She is quick to point out that she wasn’t at the qualifying session when the car ran short of fuel because of commitments at work.

“I’m usually there for the entire week and I can assure you I would have made sure there was enough fuel in the vehicle,” she said. “I think my dad secretly wanted a son when I was born, so I was raised underneath a car and got the opportunity to learn a lot.

“I have to make sure the race car driver stays on the track and keeps his wits about him. Somebody has to look out for him. I definitely have to use all my project management skills.”
