Falkor Ranch is home to happy herds Alpacas, goats among animals living on land near Elizabeth

Boasting alpacas, goats, chickens, two large dogs — and a cat that came with the property — Falkor Ranch sits on 35 acres south of Elizabeth. With a pristine view of Pikes Peak from the top of the long driveway, Tom and Diane Cribley have lived on the property since 2005 and have steadfastly nurtured its holistic mission ever since.

They were looking to buy some property but needed to find means to justify it. In their research, they discovered alpacas and fell in love with them. “But because we couldn’t afford to get into alpacas and buy the property, we got the alpacas,” Diane said.

The Cribleys started on their two acres in Windsor and dubbed it Falkor Ranch. The name was inspired by one of the main characters from the movie “The NeverEnding Story,” Falkor the Luck Dragon. When they moved to Elizabeth 13 years ago, the name followed. There are 22 alpacas at the ranch.

Alpacas are part of the camelid family, resembling both llamas and camels.

Diane said that “in the past year or two there seems to be a huge resurgence of the fiber arts. (People) needle felt and create wonderful things, to felt the fiber into different artistic creations.”

For Diane, the appeal of alpacas has always been more about the animals rather than their fiber.

“They are the most gentle, mellow, relaxing animals,” she said. “In fact, I know a lot of people who, after 9/11, just went out and sat with their alpacas, just to try and gain some peace in their heart.”

Although alpacas don’t make good house pets, they are family friendly.

“They’re great with children,” Diane said. “They just intuitively care and

are sensitive to them.”

To buy an alpaca costs anywhere from $300 to $5,000. Because of her concern for their well-being, Diane won’t sell an alpaca if it’s going to be the only one at its new home. “It’s very stressful for the alpaca,” Diane said.

The Cribley’s dedication to their alpacas have led them to become experts in every facet of their care. “There are many misconceptions about appropriate feed,” Diane said. “People don’t realize that alpacas are borderline diabetic and can’t produce the insulin needed to process sugar. So people think they are being nice and giving their alpacas … molasses, and it’s not good for them.” Many owners also feed their alpacas beet pulp, but the form in which it is sold makes it essentially a waste product full of toxins.

The Cribleys prefer a feed made by a mill in Idaho that uses a method for producing its pellets which preserves the nutritional value. Diane believes in the product so strongly that she sells it at a cut rate. “It’s non-GMO,” she said, noting that there is no organic feed on the market.

Diane also provides a birthing service for alpaca owners.

Although the alpacas at Falkor Ranch are charming, the Nubian goats are just as engaging. “They’re like dogs,” Diane said of the goats’ temperament.

In the sunlight, their pupils contract to a horizontal slit. She keeps their horns trimmed to nubs to avoid anyone — human or beast — from getting jabbed. The biggest maintenance factor for goats is keeping the hooves trimmed.

Nubian goat milk has a high butterfat content and is sweeter than cow milk. Oftentimes dairy-intolerant people are able to digest goat milk without a problem because of the different proteins it contains compared to cow milk, Diane said.

People interested in goat milk can purchase herd share for $50, plus $40 a month for board. This entitles the owner to the milk produced for their share, which amounts to approximately one gallon per week.

In an age when tradition and history are being thrown to the wayside in favor of the next big thing, the town of Elizabeth intends to preserve its past and culture by means of a Historic Context Study.

Every resident who has something to share is being asked to attend an open house on Dec. 10 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at Elizabeth Town Hall, 151 S. Banner St. The committee is looking for photos and mementos of historic places in the area that can be scanned and documented by the project team.

The public is also being asked, if possible, to share stories and background information with a videographer at an on-site recording station.

Attendees may also complete questionnaires to document ideas, memories and histories.

The purpose of the Historic Context Study is to record the community’s history and identify buildings and places important to the community’s identity. Development Director Grace Erickson spoke of the importance of having “the public provide us with some leads on which places they believe should be surveyed.”

The committee consists of three contractors from Square Moon Consultants, Erickson, and Town Administrator Dick Eason. “We also have the Historic Advisory Board behind us as well,” Erickson said.

She encouraged as many folks as possible to make the effort to help “preserve our town’s history and character — the first step is to study and identify it.”

A $21,000 grant was received for to do the study. “It will include a compilation of historical information, chronological history of the town, and a guide to architectural style … it will also include recommendations for future history and preservation projects,” Erickson said.

Completion of the study is expected in June 2017, at which time the results will be presented to in a public document.

VOICES Five things you need to keep in mind today and every day

s family and friends will tell you, I am a news junkie. Although I have left most social media sites with the exception of just a couple, I have many news apps on my phone and probably far too many Google alerts set up. It’s just my way of staying on top of what is happening in the world and in our community. Couple that with reading the newspaper and watching some of the news channels on television, you may see where I get the reputation of being a news junkie.

If I am in a rush, I actually like the new feature on most of the news apps such as “The Top 5 Things You Missed This Week,” or the “Top Things You Need to Know Today,” They are quick and summarize the news into a concise

format allowing me to click on the “More” link if I want to go deeper into a story. And when pressed for time, with a quick review of the front page of any newspaper I can get the news fix that I was looking for that day.

So what are the Five Things You Need to Know Today?

1. You are loved more than you know.

2. You are forgiven for all mistakes; so stop being so hard on yourself.

3. You are appreciated even when others can’t find the right words or ways to say thank you.

4. You are beautiful and brilliant, and you are gifted and gorgeous.

5. You are stronger than you give yourself credit for, and you can use that strength to

endure any season of life or to encourage others to persevere through any battle they may be facing.

How’s that for a short summarizing list of the Five Things You Need to Know Today? And by the way, the Five Things You Need to Know Today and Remember Every Day. Why are these so important? Because if I fall back on my addiction to the news and shared with you some of the very real and horrific things that I read or see in the news, and if I didn’t have the foundation above I could easily become depressed, stressed and angry. But now and then, you must have to disclose what you do for a living at social gatherings. And at the breakfast table.

“Noble profession, Dad. For whom?”

“National Enquirer.”

“Let me get this straight.

You write a story, knowing it’s untrue, and might hurt, offend and infuriate someone, like John Travolta, and it comes straight from the unplugged intestines of deceit and misinformation.”

“That’s it.”

There would be no National Enquirer, however, if there were no one reading it, buying it, and subscribing to it.

The headlines are always outrageous, and impossible to believe, like something out of a college humor magazine.

I know. I worked on one. But don’t bother, I had them all confiscated.

“Bigfoot kept lumberjack as love slave!”

“Adam and Eve were astro-

nauts!”

“Chris Christie thinks he’s a manatee!”

I’m guessing that anyone who reads them does it for recreational purposes only.

Perhaps to counteract the realities of existence. And for laughs.

But then what about the stories that have some truth mixed in? Like the “tanning mom” and the “balloon boy”?

What happens to us when

fact and fiction become a meatloaf ? (I like meatloaf.)

Falcon Heene, the actual balloon boy, is now 13, and is in a heavy metal band with his two brothers.

Falcon has hair down to his umbilicus, by the way.

I am in favor of creative thinking, but I am not in favor of slander, libel, or setting out to hurt feelings.

Feelings get hurt anyhow.

These are times of thin skins

and hypersensitivities. I’m sure that offenses are taken by some of the things I write about.

For example, I am in favor of a lengthy prison sentence for anyone who talks with their hands.

But then we would have to have prisons the size of Montana.

I can see how it might go in the wrong direction. I am tempted to make stuff up all

the time.

A long line of humorists preceded me and did the very same thing. That’s my excuse.

Did you know that Taylor Swift is secretly married to an Eddie Fisher impersonator?

It’s true.

Europe doesn’t work well right now because freedom has slipped from its lexicon. The European Union slaps regulations across its many, diverse states, believing that what works in Brussels works just as well in Scandinavia, the Balkans or the Iberian Peninsula.

In America, President Obama’s administration pursued the same philosophy. With enough red tape, they thought, all of America can look and act just like Washington, D.C.!

President-elect Trump’s election was a repudiation of this excessive regulatory state.

Europe also claims to be a land of justice, citing as evidence its refugee policies. To be sure, justice is indeed helping the world’s most vulnerable and innocent. But justice is also offering your citizenry the chance to live safe, fearless lives.

As President-elect Trump and the nation rethink our approach to refugee resettlement, that might mean leaving some refugees in safe, no-fly zones in the Middle East, where aid can be delivered more cheaply. When the conflicts in their home nations subside, these refugees can return to their homeland and rebuild their countries.

Finally, some Europeans may claim that America, in electing Mr. Trump, has taken a wrecking ball to the edifice of democracy. In reality, the election

of Mr. Trump is a validation of the American democratic experiment.

Our countrymen and women chose for President someone who will stand up to the special interests and lobbyists who own Washington, D.C. On Jan. 20, power in this nation will peacefully transfer to a new administration, and democracy will hold all elected officials accountable for their actions.

Europeans should know something about democracy. It’s required of member states wishing to enter the union. And democracy matters just as much when a sovereign member state chooses, by popular vote, to disengage from the EU. Some members of the EU democracy have already signaled against Mr. Juncker’s haughtiness. England and France decided to forgo an emergency EU meeting to address the election of Donald Trump. Probably better for Europe to hold an emergency meeting to address the economic and security concerns besetting its own continent.

After all, Europe has known freedom, justice and democracy in the past and will know these values again. America might even be able to help, despite Mr. Juncker’s contention that “in general the Americans take no interest in Europe.” Again, the EU Commission president is wrong.

In 1941, when fascism threatened the continent, Americans were very interested. American blood helped restore its freedom. Hopefully, when the hyste-

listed would do anything to improve the situations, make my day any brighter, or place me in a better position to help others.

However, if I can love and be loved; if I can forgive and be granted forgiveness; if I can show appreciation and gratitude for all of my blessings and bless others; if I can believe that someone can see the beauty of my heart and I can see the giftedness of theirs; and if I can be strong in the face of adversity and patiently strong while coming alongside someone else in their time of need, I do believe that I can make a difference. And I believe that you can too. We can all be difference makers if we choose to do so.

So how about you? Do you get caught up in the mayhem, fear, uncertainty,

and doubt? And if you are already depressed, stressed, and angry, then I further encourage you to maybe save this column, even if you just take the Top Five list. Place it somewhere you can see it and use it as a helpful reminder that in a time of a divided culture and country, we can look internally and know that we are loved, forgiven, appreciated, beautiful, and strong.

ach year, the holiday season brings the usual customs of brightly lit yard displays and holiday hold music, but the things people anticipate most are the special traditions they celebrate with their families.

Though customs like waiting for Santa Claus and lighting the menorah have storied and varied origins, the reasons

people cherish them have less to do with history than the way they modify the customs to fit their own family.

Be it frying latkes in the snow, arguing over the perfect Christmas tree or leaving breakfast for a snow gnome, the things people in the region do to celebrate the holidays are as unique as the people who celebrate them.

“We always try to do what others do to celebrate Hannukah, giving a present each night, and usually the Sunday of Hannukah the whole family gets together.

Cups runneth over in ancient treatment getting new attention Parker spa offers treatment favored

Most people wouldn’t think to look for innovative technology and wellness treatments in one of Parker’s oldest buildings, but that’s what’s in store at Parker Day & Med Spa. The spa, at 19767 Pikes Peak Ave., blends the old and the new in both its Victorian appearance and the treatments offered within. Cutting-edge tools like lasers and ionic equalizers are combined with ancient treatments like massage and an ancient Asian practice that’s recently gotten recognition: cupping.

“There’s definitely been quite a bit more interest in it since the Olympics,” manager Nadia Ker said.

Swimming fans may remember Michael Phelps’ bruised physique during the 2016 Games in Rio. Phelps and other cupping proponents claim it relieves muscle pain and decreases tension after they train and compete, giving them a competitive edge.

Owner Tina Long said interest in cupping may be new but she’s offered the treatment since 1993.

Clients seek the treatment for migraines, improved circulation and carpal tunnel syndrome, among other maladies, she said. Everyday use forces muscles and skin to tighten, she said, and cupping pulls them loose.

“It’s literally sucking your tissues up into this cup,” Long said. “It forces stretching within the skin, muscle tissue, fascia, tendons and ligaments.”

Folk medicine practitioners have used cupping for centuries with the goal of stimulating the immune system, draining toxins from the body and improving blood flow with bamboo, glass or plastic cups.

At Long’s spa, clients begin the treatment by standing on a treadmill-like movement plate that vibrates vigorously to ramp up blood circulation. The next step is lying on a massage table as lasers pass over the client to heal the skin.

A massage follows, during which the cups are applied to the back. The cups are gently set on the skin, then a valve is pumped to extract air and create suction.

“A lot of people aren’t used to the feeling because it’s a pull, not a push,” said massage therapist Anna Robertson, who likens the technique to the opposite of pushing on pressure points.

“It’s kind of a sucking, pinchy feeling,” said Rich Gerber, a seven-year client at the spa who said he’s been getting cupping treatments about once a month for the past 18 to 24 months.

Despite increased interest in the procedure, there isn’t much clinical research on cupping’s effectiveness. Researcher Edzard Ernst of the University of Exeter wrote that there is some evidence that it may relieve pain, but it is difficult to evaluate claims of other health benefits from the practice.

But, though he admits he was initially skeptical, Gerber swears by the treatment to relieve pain in his muscles and lower back.

“The first time it was like `What are you doing to me?’ ” he said. “But the more and more they did it, the better and better I felt.”

One unavoidable side-effect that comes with the treatment is bruising, but Gerber and Long said they generate more laughter than discomfort.

Long avoids placing cups on clients’ necks.

For some reason, she said, “They don’t want their spouses to see bruises on their necks.”
