Kids go to the source for town information Third-graders’ tour features time with mayor, administrator BY TABATHA STEWART SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

Third-grade students from Running Creek Elementary in Elizabeth were joined by Mayor Megan Vasquez for the Elizabeth Town Hall Scavenger Hunt Nov. 19, as the mayor led them on a walking tour of the town, as part of the government standards lesson. Students are learning about local government, with students running for mayor of their fictitious class town. “We have a town in our classes, and kids are running for mayor, so this was a great way to teach them about how government works,” said teacher Shauna Agee. Teachers Michelle Jones, Sarah Pascarelli and Tracey Devney joined the scavenger hunt with their students, which took them through town with a stop at Elizabeth Town Hall where Vasquez and Town Administrator Matt Cohrs answered questions. Vasquez and Cohrs explained their roles in town government, and were peppered with questions from curious students, including: “What kind of houses do you build?” “Do you run the water plant with a computer?” “Do you have to write speeches?” “What’s your favorite animal?” “Can you vote for yourself for mayor?” The answers from Vasquez and Cohrs: We don’t actually build houses, we just approve plans for them; we do run the water plant with a computer; the mayor does write speeches; the mayor’s favorite animal is the American eagle; and you can vote for yourself in a mayoral race were the answers.

Third-grade students from Running Creek Elementary asked Elizabeth Mayor Megan Vasquez what it takes to become mayor, if she likes being mayor, and what her favorite animal was during a walking field trip through town Nov. 13. PHOTO BY TABATHA STEWART Students were curious as to why Vasquez ran for mayor, even though it’s a volunteer position and she doesn’t get paid, and wondered whether it is fun being mayor. “It is very fun being mayor,” said Vasquez. “I’m young and I wanted serve my community. My favorite part about being mayor is doing things like this, talking to people and spending time with community members.”
