The Elbert County Planning Commission hosted the third of three comprehensive plan workshops on Nov. 15 at the county fairgrounds in Kiowa.

Kurt Culbertson of Design Workshop presented a slide show to 45 attendees, 20 of whom were county officials and staff, that provided them with highlights of the goals

for updating the master plan.

Design Workshop is an international planning group with a local office in Golden.

Culbertson emphasized that comprehensive plans are not regulatory. “I like to say that it’s more about what kind of cake you want,” he said, “and then defining the recipe for how you’re going to get the plan you want.”

The community tree-lighting on Dec. 1 and the tree auction and Santa’s arrival on Dec. 7 make up the schedule for the Elizabeth Festival of Trees.

“We put together this event to help bring in the holiday season,” said Shawn Strain, one of the event organizers and owner of Barnwood Vintage. “This is our first year and we hope it will become an annual community celebration.”

The festival begins Dec.1 with the lighting of the community tree located on Elizabeth’s Main Street. Plans are for Mayor Clay Hurst and town council members to throw the switch to turn on the lights. Following the treelighting, those attending are invited to help decorate the tree.

There will be goodies available, carriage rides sponsored by New American Funding will be available, and the Legacy Academy Choir will be singing carols and the songs of the season.

Indictment paints picture of large pot-trafficking ring 24 suspected of playing part in distributing marijuana to 12 states

An enterprise based in the south metro Denver area sent marijuana through the mail, sold it to out-ofstate buyers and cultivated pot in upscale neighborhoods, according to a 98-page indictment.

Two dozen people have been accused of participating in the drugtrafficking ring that illegally grew marijuana in at least 10 homes in Arapahoe, Douglas and Elbert counties. Each person has been indicted on at least nine charges.

The group allegedly operated out of residences in the Centennial, Parker, Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch and Aurora areas and in Elbert County. The suspects are accused of conspiring to grow more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana and of selling marijuana to out-of-state buyers for distribution in 12 states. The enterprise received more than $1 million during its existence, the indictment said.

A grand jury for the 18th Judicial District issued the indictment Nov. 14. Bond for each suspect is set at $50,000.

The charges also include money laundering and attempting to influence a public servant. The suspects will be tried in Douglas County District Court, according to a news release.

The indictment, provided by the Colorado Judicial Branch, lays out the details of how the ring operated and of the investigation.

Multiple accusations Main players in the organization included Anthony Hagman, Daniel Levy and Gustavo Ruiz-Medrano, the indictment says.

Hagman allegedly operated two marijuana cultivation facilities or grow houses, including at 7471 S. Eudora Way and 7016 S. Dahlia St., both in Centennial. Levy allegedly

acquired and resided in the residence at 7016 S. Dahlia St. and assisted Hagman in operating the grows. RuizMedrano, of Texas, reportedly purchased marijuana from other members of the group and transported it across state lines to distribute in his home state, as many others listed in the indictment are accused of doing.

Texas is the state with the largest group of accused marijuana transporters in the organization.

Ruiz-Medrano is allegedly associated with five other suspects from Texas accused in the indictment.

Ring members cultivated most of their marijuana at grow houses at 14583 E. Purdue Place in south Aurora, 12026 N. Third St. in the Parker area, 27100 Pine Vista Circle in Elbert County, 20449 E. Linvale Place in southeast Aurora and 6627 S. Killarney Court near Aurora and Centennial, a few blocks from Grandview High School.

Greenwood Village informant The Greenwood Village Police Department contacted Mark Galvan, a Castle Rock Police Department detective, on April 1, 2016, about a subject who was in custody and wanted to provide information about a marijuana operation in Douglas County. The male subject, not named in the indictment, was arrested after agreeing to sell marijuana through Craigslist to an undercover Greenwood Village police officer, the indictment says.

A few months earlier, the subject began working with two people, who are also not named, who have grown and sold marijuana in Douglas County for nearly a year, the indictment says. The subject arrested in Greenwood Village allegedly picked up marijuana from the individuals at an apartment at 3450 E. County Line Road in Highlands Ranch to sell.

No one lived in that apartment, the subject said — it was only used as their “stash house” for the marijuana ready for sale. During the day, a third person stayed there to watch over the product, and at any given time, they had 10 or more pounds of marijuana at the apartment, according to the indictment.

the two individuals near or at the apartment. The individuals told the subject to only send buyers for large amounts if they were from out of state to prevent a robbery and so they could charge higher prices. That’s become a common trend in the black market for marijuana, according to Galvan — those buyers will pay more because they can return to their home state and sell for nearly double what they paid.

Galvan set up a “controlled buy” with the subject that officers were able to record and listen to on April 15, 2016, at the stash apartment.

“Sold 27 pounds while I was gone,” one of the individuals told the subject, the indictment states. “We bought 14 pounds while I was gone.

We shipped out four pounds while I was gone.”

He offered the subject a quarterpound of pot to sell, and when the subject rejected taking it, he assured him it was a small part of the business.

“Negligible — like (we) literally sell 80 pounds a week,” the individual said.

The two individuals had marijuana grows at their residences and said they had eight other growers who sell marijuana to them, the subject said.

One of those growers, he said, was in a gated community in Greenwood Village, near East Orchard Road and South Dayton Street.

A marijuana-trimming business is registered at the address. The man who runs that business used the two marijuana dealers to sell and distribute extra marijuana from his work and his home grow, the indictment alleges.

Detectives also identified Brianna Williams, who said she made the trip from Texas to Colorado seven times to buy marijuana from one of the individuals who sold out of that apartment.

Teacher crunch could spur call for better pay State officials may push for salaries tied to cost of living

As part of a broad plan to increase the number of high-quality teachers in Colorado, state officials are considering asking lawmakers to take the bold step of establishing a minimum teacher salary requirement tied to the cost of living.

Officials from the state departments of education and higher education are finalizing a list of recommendations to address challenges to Colorado’s teacher workforce.

Pressing for the legislation on teacher salaries is one of dozens of recommendations included in a draft report.

The report, assembled at the request of the Legislature, also proposes a marketing campaign and scholarships to attract new teachers to rural areas.

Representatives from the Colorado Department of Education said they would not discuss the recommendations until they’re final. However, the department earlier this month briefed the State Board of Education on their proposed recommendations in advance of the Dec. 1 deadline for it to be finalized.

The impending report — based on

thousands of responses from educators, students and other Colorado residents in online surveys and town halls across the state — is a sort of first step for the state Legislature to tackle a problem years in the making.

Since 2010, Colorado has seen a 24 percent drop in the number of college students graduating from the state’s traditional teacher colleges. There’s also been a 23 percent drop in enrollment in those programs.

Residency programs, which place graduate students in a classroom for a full year with an experienced teacher, and other alternative licensure programs have seen a 40 percent increase in enrollment. But those programs produce far fewer teachers and can’t keep up with demand.

Colorado faces a shortage of teachers in certain subjects, regions and schools, and circumstances vary.

Math and science teachers are in short supply: Only 192 college students in 2016 graduated with credentials to teach those subjects. The same year, 751 students left with a degree to teach elementary school.

And rural schools have had an especially hard time finding and keeping teachers.

Here’s a look at what the state departments are considering recommending, based on the presentation from education department officials to the state board: • Provide more and better training to new — and veteran — teachers.

Colorado schools are already required to offer some sort of induction program for new teachers.

This training, which lasts between two and three years, is supposed to supplement what they learned during college.

For the last two years, the state education department has been pushing school districts to update their programs. The recommendations in the report could kick things up a notch.

The education departments are asking for updated induction requirements to be written into statute and more money to be provided to districts to pay for the training.

The draft report also calls for more more sustained training for veteran teachers, including competitive grant programs.

An additional suggestion is to create a program expressly to train teachers to teach in rural classrooms.

• Increase teacher compensation and benefits.

This will be a hard pill to swallow.

According to the presentation to the state board, the education departments want to call on lawmakers to set a minimum salary for teachers based on the school district’s cost of living.

The presentation to the board lacked specifics on how lawmakers and school districts could accomplish this. One board member, Colorado Springs Republican Steve Durham, called it a “mistake” to include such a

recommendation.

Keeping up with the rising cost of living is a challenge. A new report shows new teachers in the state’s three largest school districts couldn’t afford to rent a one-bedroom apartment.

“We hope the report itself is going to talk a lot the cost of living — that’s what we heard from our stakeholders across the field,” Colleen O’Neil, the education department’s executive director of educator talent, told the state board. “They literally were not able to meet the cost of living because their salaries did not compensate them fairly enough to find housing.”

Other suggestions the report might highlight to improve teacher compensation include loan forgiveness, housing incentives and creating a differentiated pay scale for teachers — something teachers unions staunchly oppose.

One short-term solution the state is considering recommending is allocating more resources to help schools plan for teacher turnover.

This includes providing incentives for teachers to notify school leaders about their plans to leave the classroom earlier.

The education departments are also suggesting the state increase the number of programs that can help teachers get licensed in more than one subject at a time.

Don Means, the Farmers Insurance agent in Elizabeth, is sponsoring the event.

Megan Vasquez, who works in the agency, said Farmers Insurance promotes a Behind the Badge event each year.

Last year the Elizabeth agency presented the police department a banner signed by numerous members of the community. This year’s Behind the Badge project in Elizabeth will be the mural.

“The Elizabeth Public Arts Committee worked with us on the mural project,” she said. “A company donated the materials and members of the committee created the mural.”

Strain said the second half of the festival will be held Dec. 7.

“There will be 20 decorated trees positioned along Main Street and the Dec. 7 activities include auctioning off the trees,” he said. “The 20 trees were purchased from Kiowa 4-H by individuals and businesses in Elizabeth. Each owner decorated one of the trees that were placed along Main Street.”

Strain said each of the 20 decorated trees positioned along Main Street will be on the auction block on Dec. 7.

“The proceeds of the auction will go to charities designated by the auction winners,” he added.

The tree auction will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Hot beverages will be served on the patio, an event sponsored by the Pine and Plains Library.

The Elizabeth Area Chamber of Commerce will also be on hand to help those who want to decorate cookies.

Strain said those who purchase the trees can take them home or donate them to the Elbert 4-H to be given to a family in need.

A celebration kicking off the holiday season wouldn’t be complete without an appearance by Santa. On Dec. 7, photos with the jolly elf can be taken from 6 to 8 p.m. at Barnwood Vintage, 166 Main St.

County Commissioner Danny Willcox has been impressed with the expertise and attentiveness of the Design Workshop group.

“I was really impressed with the way DW is working through this process with us. They are offering suggestions, they have a better understanding of our county now, and I think they’re doing really well,” he said.

“I think we’ll come in on time (for the approval deadline),” Willcox said.

Some citizens have asked members of the planning commission why the county won’t re-adopt the plan put together in 1996.

“Circumstances have changed. It makes sense to revisit things,” Culbertson said. “When we started the process, we asked: `How much growth should we plan for?’”

According to projections from the state demographer, there will be 29,000 more people living in the county by 2035, which would more than double the current population.

Results from feedback received during 1996 master plan process indicated that residents wanted to protect slopes, wildlife and views.

“Can you reconcile preserving those things and accommodate the 29,000 population growth that’s coming?” Culbertson asked.

The Elbert County Planning Commission consists of nine volunteer members from throughout the county.

The commission is chaired

by Dan Rosales, and the vice chair is Ron Turner.

There is also a volunteer task force of 13 citizens whose role is to “get the word out” about the meetings and act as a “communication link” between the community and the consultant team.

Time-consuming process Collectively, the planning commission has put in hundreds of volunteer hours toward the comprehensive plan project, and the hope has been for wider participation within the county.

“It was poorly attended,” Rosales said of the Nov. 15 meeting. “But we’re right in with the national average.

They (Design Workshop) tell us that one-quarter to one-half percent is average, nationwide.”

“In Elbert county that’s 60 to 100 people — wow,” Rosales added. “But when people won’t participate, they don’t have any room to criticize. It’s everybody’s right and privilege to attend — it’s the incubator of policies that will directly or

indirectly impact citizens.”

Willcox said attendees were mostly from the western portion of the county, with citizens mostly older than age 60.

“Even people who significantly opposed Independence (a large residential development that will be built in the northwestern part of the county), many aren’t participating in the comp plan,” Willcox said.

“Farmers in the east don’t care about what happens in the west, and out here, you have a totally different view of how Elbert County should develop,” Rosales added. “When you look at the responses we’ve gotten at public meetings, people want the rural look. They don’t want growth, yet they want paved roads, hik-

ing trails, shopping, they want to the conveniences of a metro area, but they don’t want the growth that goes along with that. It’s impossible.”

Rosales has a word of warning to anyone interested in the growth pattern of the county: “If you wait until a hearing and you’re protesting regulations, it’s too late.”

Rosales also shared some recent insights gained by the planning commission, Design Workshop and the county commissioners.

“We’ve realized that one size does not fit all,” he said. “We need to develop one plan for the eastern half and one for the western half — we have to consider both of them and come up with rules that are going to be different for both of them.”

“We’re leaning toward having a two-part master plan,” Rosales added, “since residential development often doesn’t pay its own way, and the county is in a situation to figure out how to manage servicing the needs without using commercial taxes” — which the county, at this point, does not have enough of to support a population boom.

About a dozen maps were arranged at the back of the room for citizens to view throughout the evening. The maps illustrated instances of how the county could be arranged with various scenarios of property division.

For example, if the county opted to portion lot sizes in 35-acre parcels, then 37 percent of the county land would have to be developed for residential use.

“All the prime ag (agricultural) land would be eaten up,” Rosales said. “Cluster housing is the only realistic way we can reduce the footprint of the development, it makes sense from land and water conservation, and significantly reduce the need for additional roads and other services.”

If the land is sectioned into five-acre lots, the amount of county land developed residentially would rise from 7

percent to 13 percent.

Infrastructure costs vary “Who pays for the infrastructure of services?”

Culbertson asked the group.

“Widening, shoulders, sewer lines, extending existing roads — depending upon the growth pattern, these costs are going to vary.”

It often makes sense to place it on the developers, Culbertson said, “though they may or may not be reimbursed, depending upon who will use those services later on.”

“The next set of meetings i are going to be critical in how a we lay out the master plan. Subsequent meetings will be on Dec. 5, 12 and 19, where the commission “will finalize the goals,” Rosales said.

“They won’t be able to provide any input because it’s a work session,” Rosales said. “They will get a good feel as to what is going into the making of the master plan.”

Rosales is enthusiastic about stakeholder meetings to be held in January, where segments of the population involved in areas such as roads and bridges and education will hold a series of meetings.

“We’ll have them look at what we came up with, and say whether or not this is a fit with what they believe are the true conditions moving forward in each of these segments,” Rosales said.

The planning commission is looking at a February/March time frame for completing the plan, with a goal of April 1 for approval of the new comprehensive master plan.

Community rallies to help ailing veteran Fundraiser set for Dec. 9 at Parker’s Takoda Tavern A fundraiser for veteran Christian Redman, who is battling an aggressive form of cancer, will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at Takoda Tavern in Parker.

Redman, who lives in Parker, was instrumental in helping organize a fundraiser in 2015 that helped a WWII vet and his wife who were facing the prospect of running out of money.

An Army cavalry scout and former police officer, Redman had to step away from his construction business earlier this year as his illness progressed. He was diagnosed with colon cancer that has spread to his stomach.

“He’s very behind on his bills because of his medicines and co-pays,” said Ron Meier, a longtime friend who is organizing the benefit with Takoda Tavern owner Bob Nobles.

“He’s a proud man, so this isn’t easy for him.”

Redman is able to cover basic expenses with disability pay. Money raised from the benefit would help Redman defray medical or other living costs, Meier said. “If we can cover one, he can handle the other.”

The benefit will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Takoda Tavern, 12311 Pine Bluffs Way. For more information, contact Meier at RJM0629@msn.com.

“He deserves our help in any way we can possibly do it,” Nobles said.

“Any one of us could end up with unfortunate circumstances,” Meier said. “You’ve got to hope that people in the community will help you.”

Teachers “feel they’re not treated like professionals,” O’Neil told the board. So the education departments want the Legislature to allow them to partner with private entities to launch a marketing campaign to lift the profile of teaching as a career in the state.

The education departments also hope the Legislature considers creating more opportunities for middle and high school students to consider teaching as a viable career path. This could include reinvigorating the state’s Educators Rising program, a program for high school students interested in teaching.

Elizabeth boys join hoops scrimmage Cardinals take part in four-team competition at Bear Creek High School

Basketball season kicked off Nov. 20 for the Elizabeth boys basketball team when they took the floor against opponents for the first time this season during the four-team scrimmage held at Bear Creek High School in Lakewood.

Four teams, Elizabeth, D’Evelyn and Vista Peak and host Bear Creek took part in the scrimmage. A roundrobin format was used as each team took the court for a 20-minute scrimmage against each of the other three teams. A running clock was used as two teams faced off for 20 minutes of competition. No scores were kept but officials were on the court to call fouls if needed.

Cardinals Coach Alex Hutchins said he has a lot of good kids on the varsity this season.

“This is my first year as head coach so there has been a learning curve for all of us,” the coach said during a break in the action. “We did work together this summer and that helps as we get ready for the season. This scrimmage is a great chance to see where we are as a team and to try different player combinations so we can see what works best for us.”

He said he wants the Cardinals to run a fast-paced style this season.

“We do have a couple 6-4 guys in the lineup but I think fast-paced basketball will work better for us. We have a good group and good leadership. This scrimmage is a chance to see them in action when they go up against opponents rather than their teammates.”

Senior Gage Smith said he has played a total of five sports in high school but basketball is his favorite.

“I guess I like basketball the best because my teammates are my best friends and it is great to be together on the court with them,” he said. “I like a lot of things about basketball but I guess the thing I like the best is when I knock down a three-pointer and the

Smith is 6-4 and plays point guard.

“I started playing point guard when I was a sophomore and I was 5-7,” he said “I grew seven inches over the last two seasons but still play the same position. I just have to adapt ballhandling skills a bit to compensate for my height as I play point guard for our team.”

He said to score points for the Cardinals he feels he can take advantage of the situation by either driving to the basket or pulling up and shooting the outside shot. He said he likes to shoot and hit three-pointers.

“My goal this season is to do all I can to help our team get to state,” he said.

“Our team has really worked so hard to get ready for this season because our goal is to get to state. I feel we are a very good team and we are strong enough to get to state.”

The Cardinals kick off the season on the road as they travel to Alamosa for a tournament. Their first game in the tournament is Nov. 30 against Montrose.

They are scheduled to play three games in the tournament that last until Dec. 2. Elizabeth plays its first home game Dec. 15 against Kennedy.

I called to find out if Smitty was still available.

“Let me go see.”

A woman put the phone down, and walked away. I could hear her footsteps.

Then I could hear her coming back.

“He’s here.”

His name wasn’t Smitty at the time.

I thought he needed a new one, to go with his new life.

Displayed near me right now is my father’s World War II flight jacket. In script, on the front right side, it says “Smitty.”

Later on, I called him every name imaginable — names of endearment — even after he was completely deaf.

I never put a hat on Smitty. People do things like that, I’ve heard. Dress up their dogs like dolls.

People make jokes about dachshunds all the time, but my friends know better than to try that around me. I make an exception when it comes to cartoonist Gary Larson.

“Give me a hand here, Etta. I got into a nest of wiener dogs over on Fifth and Maple.”

When he was younger, Smitty crawled into sweatshirt sleeves, and fell asleep. Later on, he could sleep anywhere at any time, and napping became one of our favorite things to do together.

If I said, “Let’s nap,” he just looked at me — and smiled.

A few days ago, Smitty went on life’s final big adventure.

Thanksgiving the holiday may have ended last week, but the spirit of Thanksgiving should be a positive habit we strive to live by. It is so easy to get angry or caught up in the holiday mayhem, this is true.

But I have found that people who maintain the attitude of gratitude tend to have a much more pleasant holiday season, and their stress levels are reduced dramatically.

The reason for the season is not about how many gifts we buy and give away, or how many gifts we receive.

The real reason for the season is found in the Christmas story.

It is found in the Hanukkah story.

The real reason for the season is summed up in love and gratitude.

Do you have it in you to extend your gratitude and appreciation bucket beyond Thanksgiving?

Can we all try and walk with the halo effect of Thanksgiving as we enter into the season where we should naturally experience gratitude and appreciation, love and kindness, and goodwill towards all men and women?

Will you personally accept this gratitude challenge?

Denver U.S. postal Inspectors noticed a suspicious pattern of mailings into P.O. Box 4587 in Greenwood Village in January. The grand jury alleges that a mailing addressed to James Jones — a suspect named in the indictment — at that post office box bore the return address of a Dennis Jones in St. Louis, and that the parcel contained a stack of money in a magazine.

According to the indictment: A male who claimed to be Jones picked up the package at a post office in Greenwood Village on Feb. 7 — Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office deputies had set up the scene with postal inspectors. The male left, got into a car with a male driver, and

Deer spoiling for a fight State urges residents to be wary as mating season sparks aggressive behavior

Throughout Colorado, deer are in the midst of their mating season and Colorado Parks and Wildlife is reminding residents to take precautions to avoid conflicts.

“Buck deer can be aggressive and lose their usual wariness of people at this time of year,” said Patt Dorsey, southwest regional manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

During the “rut” bucks are territorial and loaded with testosterone.

They may attack people that appear to be competitive rivals. Deer can

also see dogs as threats. In past years, bucks have gored people and dogs. If you see deer in your neighborhood keep your distance. Never attempt to get close to deer, never feed them and never try to pet them.

Bucks in the rut may also spar with and become tangled in swing sets, volleyball nets, bicycles, vegetable-wire cages, hoses, etc.

“We’ve seen bucks hung up in things like hammocks, clothes lines and plastic fencing,” Dorsey said.

“When that happens it’s very stressful on the animal and sometimes fatal. It can also be dangerous for people who might come in contact with a deer that is in a stressed-out condition.”

So now is the time to take a look at your yard, bring in the summer toys and check if there are other things that can snare deer. If items can’t be removed, CPW recommends tying

long strands of brightly colored surveyor’s tape to them which might help to keep the animals away.

People displaying holiday decorations and lights are also asked to exercise caution. Lights should be attached firmly to structures, or strung at least eight feet off the ground.

Avoid draping lights loosely on top of shrubbery or wrapping lights around tree trunks.

If you do see an animal with items stuck in its antlers call the nearest CPW office. Do not approach the animal or attempt to cut them off yourself.

The rut for deer usually continues until late December.

Drivers are also reminded to slow down and be on the lookout for deer on highways. Deer have migrated to winter range and are likely to be close to major roadways at this time of year.

Holiday shopping with a twist

Markets offer crafts, food, artwork, more

When it comes to holiday shopping, chain stores and online outlets will try to pull in customers with quantity of items and deals.

But to find that unique gift — one specially and limitedly created by local artisans, bakers and craftsman — you have to look locally. And that’s where the multitude of holiday markets in communities around the Denver metro area come in.

“We’re a place where you can shop and savor the season,” said Natalia Wobst, executive director of the Colorado Chamber of the German American Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the annual Christkindl Market in Denver’s Skyline Park.

“There’s a real feeling of community effort at this market, and vendors really get to know the customers. And customers know we’re a reliable place for good Christmas finds.”

There are dozens of markets to choose from heading into the holiday season, so we picked a handful from our coverage areas to highlight.

Adams County Holiday Bazaar WHERE: Adams County Fairgrounds, 9755 Henderson Road, Brighton HOURS: Saturday, Dec. 2, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND: The bazaar features more than 300 booths in two buildings, all focused on handmade crafts. Corporate vendors and home-based franchises are not allowed.

The event also doubles as a benefit fundraiser for the Adams County Historical Society and Museum.

WHAT MAKES THE MARKET SPECIAL: “What makes a good market is new inventory and a variety of merchandise, and our vendors are personable and lovely to talk with,” said Marilyn Fingerlin, one of three co-organizers of the Adams County Historical Society bazaars.

“They are always looking for new crafts to make to sell, and you will find quality handcrafted items for your home and all-occasion gifts.”

WHAT YOU’LL FIND: The guild is composed of people who are students or former students in Arapahoe Community College’s ceramics program.

Items on sale include functional and decorative pieces made by all skill levels. There are limited amounts of each piece, which means shoppers will see a rotating stock of new pieces, said Melanie Unruh, the guild’s vice president.

WHAT MAKES THE MARKET SPECIAL: “Some of the proceeds go back to the department to fund workshops, equipment and everything else we need to teach our students,” Unruh said. “There’s a broad range of handmade art here at an excellent price and everything is unique.”

Denver Christkindl Market WHERE: Skyline Park, 16th Street Mall and Arapahoe Street, Denver HOURS: Nov. 17 through Dec. 23, Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND: The 43rd annual market features creations from 106 Colorado artists, including fine ceramics, fiber, glass work, jewelry, paintings, woodworking, photography and other holiday items. It is one of the longestrunning markets in the state.

Despite publication of millions of his Brown books in multiple languages (more than 52 million), the mildmannered Brown reminds one of his globe-trotting college-professor/protagonist, Robert Langdon — bright, articulate, humorous — and certainly confident, but not ostentatious at all ... This is a guy one would love to chat with over coffee or a beer.

After being sworn in, in the first three months of membership, complete a minimum of 45 hours of orientation and training curriculum. Sharing in the spirit of the star Castle Rock police Cmdr. John Anderson, who has lived in Castle Rock his entire life, remembers attending a Starlighting when he was 8 years old.

And although the spirit of the annual celebration, which kicks off the holiday season in Castle Rock, remains the same hometown vibe as it always has been, the crowds are nowhere like they used to be.

“There are enormous crowds tonight,” Anderson said, “probably around 15,000, compared to 50 years ago when there were only 200 people.”

He and Sgt. Mark Ruisi have worked the Starlighting for more than 30 years, making sure the large crowds are safe as they enjoy the festivities of the night, which were capped Nov. 18 by the lighting of the star on The Rock amid a spectacular burst of fireworks.

The Starlighting tradition, which dates back to 1936, always takes place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This year’s festivities included hot chocolate, booths manned by nonprofit organizations, entertainers strolling along the streets, live entertainment and, of course, Santa.

For Cindy Callin, there’s nothing quite like the night. She brought her sister-inlaw Julie Devoss, visiting from Wisconsin, to take in the warmth and spirit of community.

Devoss agreed that the celebration — and people — were special. “Everybody here,” she said, “is really friendly.”
