Elizabeth gymnastics team wins state crown 23 girls travel to meet in Thornton and come home with top honors

After beating 17 teams in the regional round of competition, Elizabeth High School’s gymnastics team dominated the 4A state championship at Thornton High on Nov. 8, with the top score of 179.7. It’s the fifth time the Elizabeth team has won state since its inception in 2006.

The team of 23 gymnasts, ranging in age from 14 to 18, competed in the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor routines. According to head coach Stacey Folmar, the team counted zero falls, and had no mistakes that counted against them.

“We had a perfect meet,” said Folmar.

“We did well throughout the season, and sometimes it’s hard to keep the momentum going into the postseason, but the team was more motivated and more driven than I really thought possible.”

Folmar credits this year’s win to the dedication and hard work of all the team members, and after placing third last year, they were determined to bring the championship back to Elizabeth.

Officers suspect aggressive deer was raised by people Collar, behavior of buck that attacked Franktown man indicate animal had been domesticated

The deer that attacked a man in Franktown was wearing an orange collar.

A deer that attacked a Franktown man Nov. 13 is suspected to have been raised by people, according to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The 56-year-old man was treated at a local hospital for his injuries and released.

The deer, which was estimated to weigh about 150 pounds, was put down by a Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office deputy after displaying “aggressive behavior,” according to the news release.

Here’s what the release said happened: The man and his wife told Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers that they saw what was a “friendly deer” fitted with a fluorescent orange dog collar on the other side of their fence around 4:50 p.m.

The wife said she reached over the fence and the deer approached, touching her finger with its nose. The buck then came through a break in the fence line, approached the woman and knocked her back, pinning her into

the barbed-wire fence.

The husband tried to intervene and the deer attacked, knocking him to the ground and dragging him around the yard. He was injured in his lower body from the buck’s antlers.

The wife then ran inside and called 911. She shot a pellet gun toward the buck, and the deer was distracted long enough for the man to get behind a boat in the yard to separate himself from the buck.

Wildlife officers believe the deer was domesticated and set free in the area recently. Before Nov. 13, Colorado Parks and Wildlife had no previous reports of a collared deer in the area.

“Every indication we see points to this deer being raised by people, one from its collar and two from its behavior,” wildlife officer Casey Westbrook said in the release. “We suspect some-

body was raising it and released it after they couldn’t handle it anymore.

“These are some of the dangers that come when you try to domesticate, or even just feed wildlife, which is a major issue we start to see this time of year. These animals learn to expect something from humans and when they don’t get it, they become dangerous and encounters like what we saw here can happen. Mix in the fact that deer are now in the breeding season, and this all contributed to something that could have been prevented.”

A concerned resident told Colorado Parks and Wildlife on Nov. 13 about a Facebook post that showed a photo of a man interacting with this deer on Nov. 9, the release said.

Wildlife officers contacted the man in the Facebook post, who said the buck had approached him Nov. 9 while

he was doing yard work at his home in Elizabeth. The man said the deer had attempted to push him around with its antlers and showed the officers several pictures of him fending off the animal, the release said.

CPW received another report about 4:45 p.m. Nov. 13 of the same deer that had chased a 10-year-old boy near Tomichi Drive and Caribou Drive in Franktown before a man pulled his car in between the child and the deer to prevent an attack, the release said.

The incident involving the 10-year-old was just down the road from where the man was gored by the deer minutes later.

“If this was reported to CPW on Saturday instead of being posted on Facebook, we might have been able to prevent this,” Westbrook said in the release. “The behavior of any wild animal can be unpredictable, and the behavior of wildlife that get domesticated can be demanding and aggressive.”

It is illegal to own or possess wildlife in Colorado.

“Colorado’s wild animals should stay wild,” Westbrook said.

“This year we had a group of kids that were extremely driven and responsible,” said Folmar. “They had goals they wanted to reach, and put in the work to get there.

The ladies made it happen.”

Working as a team was vital in the competition, where six girls competed in the four events.

“I feel like there was no superstar on our team this year,” said Folmar. “It took everyone on our team practicing until it was perfect, and we basically had perfect sets.”

In addition to the long hours of practicing and dedication to their sport, Folmar said the camaraderie among team members helps everyone on the team succeed.

“The older girls have beautifully been role models for the younger girls, and as young women, they all strive to be kind, respectful and supportive of each other,” said Folmar.

The champions were given the royal treatment when they returned to school on Nov. 11, arriving by limousine and being honored by fellow students, staff and community members in a short assembly to recognize the team and individual accomplishments.

“The work ethic and discipline it takes to be a gymnast is insane,” said John Everhart, Elizabeth High athletic director. “They are taking two days off to celebrate, but then they’re going back to work. They want to defend their title next year, there’s basically a target on their back, but I think they like that.”

In Colorado, 24 high-hazard dams are seen as problematic Jeffco, Denver structures among those with risk of deadly failure

Two dozen aging dams in Colorado were in unsatisfactory condition and are located in places where their failure would likely kill at least one person, according to an Associated Press investigation that found at least 1,688 such dams nationwide.

The 24 Colorado dams range in age from 41 to 127 years old and are used for irrigation, recreation and drinking water supply, according to public records obtained by the AP during the more than two-year investigation.

They are spread among 16 counties, with El Paso having four, Jefferson three and Mesa and Park counties having two each.

Records show the dams are upto-date with their inspections, and all have emergency action plans in case of a failure. In addition, work is underway or planned for some of the dams, and at least one in El Paso County, South Lake Dam, has been repaired, said Bill McCormick, chief of Colorado Dam Safety at the state Division of Water Resources.

Twenty-one of the 24 Colorado

dams are privately owned or owned by local governments, and the decision to fix a dam is the owner’s, McCormick said. State regulators can order a reservoir’s water level lowered to a safe level if a dam is in unsatisfactory condition or drain the reservoir if there is no safe level.

“If owners can live with less than full storage, they may not have the incentive to fix their dam,” he said in an email to the AP. “We try to incentivize owners to fix their dams, but the decision is theirs. “ One of the 24 dams is at Smith Reservoir in Lakewood. Officials are restricting the amount of water in the reservoir because of high seepage when the water level is within 2 feet of the spillway, according to a 2018 inspection report.

Engineers’ models show that if the privately owned dam failed, water from the Smith Reservoir would flow east seven miles through residential and industrial areas until it reached the South Platte River, according to a 2017 emergency action plan.

There are a few other dams in and around the Denver metro area. Skeel Dam is located in Denver just north of Cherry Hills Village, near the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Hampden Avenue. It is considered a high-hazard dam in unsatisfactory condition. It was constructed in 1900, and was last inspected in February 2018.

Upper Long Lake Dam is located near Highway 93, north of Golden and just west of the Ralston Water Treatment Plant that serves Arvada.

It is rated as a high-hazard dam in unsatisfactory condition. It was constructed in 1939, and was last inspected in May 2018.

In September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded Colorado more than $260,000 to conduct risk assessments and repair high-hazard dams, the term used to describe a structure whose failure would likely result in at least one death.

Officials plan to put part of that money toward designing a fix for the leaking area at the Smith Reservoir Dam, McCormick said.

Since 1950, there have been six major dam failures in Colorado, according to a 2018 Colorado State Hazard Mitigation Plan. They include the 1982 Lawn Lake Dam failure in Larimer County that killed four people and caused $31 million in property damage.

With Colorado’s growing population, more people moving into downstream communities will be exposed to potential dam failure. State officials said in the hazard mitigation plan that El Paso and Larimer’s exposure will be considered “extreme “ with projected population increases of 36% and 42%, respectively, between 2010 and 2030.

State officials have identified 24 high-hazard dams in El Paso County, and those that the AP investigation found are in unsatisfactory condition are the South Lake, Teller, Valley No. 1 and Valley No. 2 dams.

There are 54 high-hazard dams in Larimer County, but none were listed in unsatisfactory condition as of 2018, according to the AP investigation.

The 24 Colorado dams were identified in a two-year investigation by the AP in which it found at least 1,680 dams nationwide rated as high-hazard and considered to be in poor or unsatisfactory condition.

Emergency plans obtained by the AP indicate that thousands of people living and working downstream could be at risk if those dams were to catastrophically fail, while separate inspection reports cite a variety of problems. Those include leaks that can indicate a dam is failing internally, unrepaired erosion, holes from burrowing animals and extensive tree growth, which can destabilize earthen dams. In some cases, inspectors also flagged spillways that are too small to handle the amount of water that could result from increasingly intense rainstorms due to a changing climate.

The AP’s investigation covers the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico but excludes five states that did not fully comply with records requests.

Awards open to youths whose parents were injured, killed in workrelated accidents STAFF REPORT

The Pinnacol Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for the 2020-21 school year from youths whose parents have been injured or killed in work-related accidents.

The Pinnacol Foundation has awarded nearly $5.5 million to more than 550 students in Colorado since it began in 2000. The average scholarship is $4,700 per year. Money can be used for four-year, two-year or trade programs at accredited colleges, universities, community colleges and vocational schools in the United States. The foundation awarded $474,890 in 100 scholarships in 2019.

She recently graduated from Elizabeth High School and is attending the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Inspired by her mother’s work, she plans on earning her degree in nursing and starting a career in health care management.

To be eligible to apply for a foundation scholarship, a student must be the natural child, adopted child, stepchild or full dependent of a worker who was injured or killed in a compensable work-related accident during the course and scope of employment with a Colorado-based employer.

The foundation evaluates the severity of the injury sustained by each student’s parent or guardian as well as the student’s academic achievement, financial need, civic involvement and strength of an essay. Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and be between the ages of 16 and 25 at the time of application.

Secret Service study: School shooters showed warning signs More than 40 attacks looked at from 2008-17

Most students who committed deadly school attacks over the past decade were badly bullied, had a history of disciplinary trouble and their behavior concerned others but was never reported, according to a U.S. Secret Service study.

In at least four cases, attackers wanted to emulate other school shootings, including those at Columbine High School in Colorado, Virginia Tech University and Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

The study by the Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center is one of the most comprehensive reviews of school attacks since the Columbine shootings in 1999. The report obtained by The Associated Press looked in depth at 41 school attacks from 2008 through 2017.

The information gleaned through the research will help train school officials and law enforcement on how to better identify students who may be planning an attack and how to stop them before they strike.

“These are not sudden, impulsive acts where a student suddenly gets disgruntled,” Lina Alathari, the center’s head, said in an AP interview.

“The majority of these incidents are preventable.”

Nearly 40 training sessions for groups of up to 2,000 are scheduled.

Alathari and her team trained about 7,500 people during 2018. The training is free.

The Secret Service is best known for its mission to protect the president.

The threat assessment center was developed to study how other kinds of attacks could be prevented. Officials use that knowledge and apply it in other situations such as school shootings or mass attacks.

Since the Columbine attack on April 20, 1999, there have been scores of school shootings. Some, like Sandy Hook in 2012, were committed by nonstudents. There were others where no one was injured. Those were not included in the study.

For the report released Nov. 7, investigators reviewed instances in which a current or recent student purposefully used a weapon to kill at least one person.

“We focus on the target so that we can prevent it in the future,’’ Alathari said.

The report covers 41 school attacks from 2008 through 2017 at K-12 schools and were chosen if the attacker was a current or former student who used a weapon to injure or kill at least one person at the school while targeting others.

Nineteen people were killed and 79 were injured; victims included

students, staff and law enforcement.

The research was launched following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018.

The Secret Service put out a best practices guide based on some of the research last July to 40,000 schools nationwide, but the new report is a comprehensive look at the attacks.

The shootings happened fast and were usually over within a minute or less. Law enforcement rarely arrived before an attack was over. Attacks generally started during school hours and occurred in the one location, such as a cafeteria, bathroom or classroom.

Most attackers were male; seven were female. About three-fifths of the attackers were white, 15 percent were black and 5 percent Hispanic.

The weapons used were mostly guns, but knives were also used. One attacker used a World War II-era bayonet. Most of the weapons came from the attackers’ homes, the investigators reported.

Alathari said investigators were able to examine detailed information about attackers, including their home lives, suspension records and past behaviors.

There’s no clear profile of a school attacker, but some details stand out: Many were absent from school before the attack, often through a school suspension; they were treated poorly by their peers in person, not just on-

line; they felt mistreated; some sought fame, while others were suicidal.

The key is knowing what to look for, recognizing the patterns and intervening early to try to stop someone from pursuing violence.

“It really is about a constellation of behaviors and factors,” Alathari said.

The attackers ranged in age but were mostly young adults, seventhgraders to seniors. More than threequarters initiated their attack after an incident with someone at school.

In one case, a 14-year-old shot a classmate at his middle school after he’d been mocked and called homophobic names. The attacker later reported the victim made comments that made him uncomfortable and they were the final straw in his decision to attack. Seven attackers documented their plans and five researched their targets before the attack.

Thirty-two were criminally charged, with 22 charged as adults. Most took plea deals. More than half are incarcerated. A dozen more were treated as juveniles. Seven committed suicide and two were fatally wounded.

Alathari said the report shows that schools may need to think differently about school discipline and intervention.

The report does not weigh on political topics such as whether guns are too accessible or whether teachers should be armed.

Nicknames can be enigmatic, charismatic, emblematic, problematic

M

ost of us, including me, have nicknames.

Most of us who have nicknames didn’t nickname ourselves, and that’s where this column comes in.

Like everything else that we say and do these days, nicknaming someone has QUIET come under scrutiny.

DESPERATION There are even those who feel strongly that nicknames should be banned because, as one psychologist said, they can be a form of condescension, and control.

Three guesses what my high school nick- Craig Marshall name was. It wasn’t Smith “Babaganoosh” or “Lollipop.”

It was “Smitty.”

Some nicknames are necessary.

Mike Krzyzewski reportedly can’t

even spell his own name. No one can.

He’s called “Coach K.” (Coach K is 72, but he looks exactly like he did when he was 32.)

The word “nickname” comes from “ekename” (c. 1300), meaning “a familiar or diminutive name.”

Some nicknames are a snap. “Beth” from Elizabeth. “Joe” from Joseph.

However, I will never understand “Jack” from John. Or “Dick” from Richard.

Some nicknames are uncomplimentary, and refer to appearance or behavior. That goes for most of the Seven Dwarfs.

The dwarfs were unnamed by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the collectors and publishers of “Snow White.” In 1937, Walt Disney staff provided the names we now associate with the dwarfs. I sure wish I had been in the meeting that day when names were proposed.

I’m told “Pizza Face” was rejected.

Here’s a little test. We all know what George Ruth’s nickname was.

How about George Anderson? Wilmer Mizell?

How about “The It Girl,” “The Oomph Girl,” and “The Sweater Girl”?

Dwight was “Ike,” and Ronald was “Dutch.”

Manfred von Richthofen was “Red Baron,” and Charles Lindbergh was “Lucky Lindy.”

Louis Armstrong was “Satchmo,” Mel Torme was the “Velvet Fog,” and Bruce Springsteen is “The Boss.” Who was “Yardbird”?

Who was “Scarface,” “Bugsy,” and “Pretty Boy”?

My favorite baseball player was stuck with “Splendid Splinter.” Willie Mays was “The Say Hey Kid.” You really know your nicknames if you can name the ones given to these two guys: Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis.

Cities have nicknames. Can you name Cincinnati’s? New York City’s?

Manhattan’s (the one in Kansas)?

Schools have nicknames. They are often called “mascots.” The most com-

mon school nicknames are “Eagles,” Tigers,” and “Wildcats.”

Snore.

Some nicknames are entirely unique to the school: “Cornhuskers,” “Crimson Tide,” and “Ichabods.”

Bonus points today for identifying the school that is associated with the Ichabods.

Jennifer said, “What’s a Boilermaker?”

A craftsman who builds and maintains steam locomotives, and Purdue students.

Whenever I wear one of my University of Michigan shirts, someone invariably says, “Go Blue.”

Whenever I wear one of my UCLA shirts, someone invariably says, “Go Trojans,” and then there is a fistfight.

Here are your answers: George Anderson was “Sparky.” Wilmer Mizell was “Vinegar Bend.” Clara Bow was “The It Girl.” Ann Sheridan was “The “Oomph Girl.”

Are you an average investor, with emotions driving decisions?

he nation’s leading investor behavior study for over 25 years was just released. I always find these interesting since it highlights our human nature … to make decisions with our emotions.

Most of the studies indicate how poor the FINANCIAL average investor is in making decisions on STRATEGIES when to invest and for how long. However, this study was particularly alarming as the headline reads “DALBAR study shows the average equity fund investor lost twice the money of the S&P in 2018.”

in our product or service, confident in our company, and confident in our commitment to continues improvement.

Companies would do well to place more emphasis in this area for new hires. Many organizations struggle with turnover of employees. Employees will share during exit interviews that they just lacked the confidence to become successful. This is happening with increased frequency as companies prioritize onboarding of new team personnel but forget to work on the person and not just company information, product knowledge, and policies and procedures.

And if we take a salesperson who has just been hired, has strong presence, excellent learning skills and habits, and understands how to use and leverage data, and if this salesperson has never sold anything before, it could be a disaster if we place them in an environment where the lack of a healthy self-image or confidence could really hurt them. Possibly even ending in early termination because they weren’t trained in the area that will give them the will and the skill to confidently speak with or meet prospects and customers. And the revolving door starts turning once again as we look to backfill those positions.

I am not a fan of measuring against an index, since you can’t actually invest in an index. It is a barometer commonly used for those who don’t want to go to the trouble to figure out what is needed to make their financial plan work. I do caution investors not to measure themselves against a single benchmark of any kind, but rather track your investments against your own goals and strategy. Keep in mind that indexes do not consider taxes, costs or the internal dynamics of an index, and the fact that it changes over time.

Back to the subject of investor behavior, see which of these common behaviors² best describe you: Loss aversion: The fear of loss is greater than the need for gain, and panic selling sets in.

Narrow framing: Making decisions about one part of the portfolio without considering the effects on the total.

Anchoring: The process of remaining Confidence, when the four areas of confidence mentioned above can be mastered, any one of us can go toe-totoe with any peer, any manager, and prospect or customer, and any competition that may be in our way. Now we do not want to become confused here either. I am not suggesting arrogance or being cocky, what I am suggesting is that individuals, managers, and businesses take the time to invest in making sure that our people are ready to succeed and have the greatest likelihood of success.

To accomplish this we would do well to hire slowly, make sure they have the best chance of succeeding, give them a strong onboarding program that includes training on confidence and a healthy self-image, and then watch as they impact the success of the organization and grow personally and professionally.

Mental accounting: Separating performance of investments mentally to justify success and failure.

Lack of diversification: Believing a portfolio is diversified when, in fact, there is considerable overlap or duplication.

Herding: Following what everyone else is doing. Leads to “buy high/sell low.”

Regret: Not performing a necessary action due to the regret of a previous failure.

Media response: The media have a bias toward optimism to sell products from advertisers and attract viewers or readers.

Optimism: Overly optimistic assumptions tend to lead to dramatic reversions when met with reality.

It is virtually impossible to avoid all of these behaviors unless you have a coach and a strict investment policy and can detach your emotions from

your decisions. It may be well worth the advisory fee to design your portfolio, research the best investments and know when to buy and how long to hold.

The year 2019 is proving to be an interesting year in the stock market.

If you want to warm up the breasts before cutting and serving, they suggest adding them to the back of the pan at the end. True, you don’t end up with a whole turkey dramatically presented and carved at the table, but Scott and Becker are right that “your guests will appreciate a properly cooked turkey more than a turkey as centerpiece.’’

osting Thanksgiving isn’t for the faint of heart. There are more dishes than you might usually serve. More timing concerns because of that. More pots and plates to wash. And perhaps more family dynamics, buried deep below the surface for the other 364 days a year, that threaten to bubble up through the gravy.

Well, I can’t do anything about your family dynamics (if I could I would start closer to home). But I can share tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years, along with advice from some other Thanksgiving Dinner pros.

Mashed potatoes There are two basic ways to make potatoes for mashing.

1) Boil and then peel them. Peeling potatoes can be a drag (though if you need a kitchen task to give an eager family member, this is a good one).

But if you boil your potatoes whole in

their skins until tender (about 20 to 25 minutes), then transfer them to an ice bath (a big bowl of ice water) and let them sit for 20 to 30 seconds, the skins will slide right off. Then you can go right ahead and mash them.

2) Bake your potatoes. Megan Scott and John Becker, authors of the new “Joy of Cooking,’’ explain, “Baking

the potatoes dries them out a bit more, allowing for maximum butter/cream/ dairy absorption and a fluffier texture.

You can bake them at the same time as the turkey.’’ A medium russet potato will bake in approximately 1 hour at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Just pierce them a few times with a knife and set them directly on an oven rack. Once baked, cut them open and scoop out the insides for mashing.

Turkey roasting As Scott and Becker note, “A turkey is actually two roasts in one. The breast is thick, lean and will begin to overcook the minute it exceeds 165 degrees Fahrenheit. The leg quarters, on the other hand, are bonier, fattier and practically impossible to overcook. In fact, we find that they have the best texture when cooked to 175 degrees or above.”

They recommend separating the legs from the breast toward the end of cooking to get both dark and white meat perfect.

“When the breast reaches an internal temperature of 155-160 degrees Fahrenheit, remove the turkey, and carefully (using a dish towel and a sharp knife) cut off the whole legs,” they say. “Return the leg quarters to the pan and cook them until they register an internal temp of 175 degrees.

Meanwhile, tent the breast loosely while the legs finish cooking.’’

Stuffing Sure, you can use a mix, but Daniel Leader, cookbook author and bread baker in New York’s Hudson Valley, suggests making your own. You might be surprised by the bread he recommends, and an intriguing secret ingredient: “I love to use slightly dark, gnarly sourdough bread with its nooks and crannies for stuffing. I cut up a little over a pound of bread into 1-inch cubes and mix with a generous 1/3 cup of local bourbon from Tutthilltown Distillery nearby in Gardiner, New York. I saute a mix of onions, celery, carrots, local honey crisp apples, garlic, fresh thyme, rosemary, combine it all, and add chicken stock as needed.”

Leader stuffs his bird with the mixture, but you can also bake it separately.

Gravy Bill Smith, recently retired chef at Crook’s Corner in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has had the good fortune to be a guest at an old friend’s home for years, and his sole task is to make the gravy. He does a lot of the prep ahead of time, and lets the giblets do some of the heavy lifting.

Put the neck and all the giblets except the liver in a saucepan of cold water and simmer until they are well done, he says. You can do this the day before and degrease the cooled broth later. Chop up the gizzard and heart and shred the meat from the neckbone. Then, just before dinner, when the bird is done, move it to a platter to rest. Pour off as much fat from the roasting pan as possible, while saving as much of the juices as you can.

In a jar with a tight lid, shake a few tablespoons of all-purpose flour into the cold broth until it is completely combined. Put the roasting pan with the remaining cooking juices on the stove over high heat.

Some good health news: Americans’ cholesterol levels are dropping, and more people at especially high risk are getting treatment.

Researchers say the report, released Nov. 11, suggests a controversial change in recommendations for cholesterol treatment may be starting to pay off.

“It is very heartening,” said Dr. Pankaj Arora of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who led the study. “But there is more to do.”

Heart disease is the world’s leading killer and high cholesterol is a key risk factor — but not the only one. Doctors long treated patients based mostly on their level of socalled “bad” cholesterol, whether they had other risks or not. In 2013, national guidelines urged them instead to focus more on people’s

overall heart risk, by taking into account age, blood pressure, diabetes and other factors. Those at highest risk would get the most benefit from cholesterol-lowering statin drugs.

The Alabama team examined records from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that tracked cholesterol information from more than 32,000 adults between 2005 and 2016.

Among people taking cholesterol medication, the average level of that “bad” cholesterol — what’s known as LDL cholesterol — dropped 21 points over the study period, the researchers reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. It was declining even before the 2013 guidelines but continued to inch down afterward.

Total cholesterol levels and another fat known as triglycerides likewise decreased.

“These are surprisingly impressive results” that together predict a 15% to 20% reduction in risk of heart attacks and strokes, said Dr. Michael Miller, preventive cardiology chief at the University of Maryland Medical Center, who wasn’t involved with the study.

Moreover, there was an uptick in statin use by people with diabetes over the study period, from less than half to over 60% getting one.

Diabetics are particularly vulnerable to heart attacks and tend to have poorer outcomes.

“It’s very important for those with a diagnosis of diabetes to not get that first heart attack,” said Dr. Neil J. Stone, a cardiologist at Northwestern University. He led development of the 2013 guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association, and he co-authored an update last year.

Arora cautioned that other highrisk groups haven’t seen an increase in treatment — and that still too many Americans don’t know if they have a cholesterol problem.

The advice for consumers? If you haven’t had a cholesterol check recently, get one, Miller said.

Testing is easier than ever, as fasting no longer is required. Especially if you have additional risk factors, high cholesterol should spark a frank conversation about diet, exercise and the pros and cons of statins.

Jazz bar set to open in Parker The Blu Note will hold a two-night grand opening celebration

The feeling hasn’t quite hit Dale Trujillo yet.

The Blu Note, a jazz bar, will open Nov. 15, a culmination of years of hard work to bring something different to the Parker night scene. At a private early opening Nov. 10, Trujillo said the bar brought to life a dream shared by he and his late wife, Gail, who died in 2018, just as the groundwork for Blu Note was being laid.

“She’s been right here,” Trujillo said, patting his right shoulder, “the whole time.”

The Blu Note, 19600 Solar Circle, south of downtown, will be the first jazz bar in Parker. It will also serve food. The idea is to have it become a community place, Trujillo said.

He wants families to come enjoy the experience.

Trujillo, a former rocker in a band called Gauntlet, which opened for acts like Ozzy Osbourne, Twisted Sister and Motley Crue when they visited Denver, said he got into jazz music about six years ago.

Southeast Community Outreach Cares opens new home To Dennis Gorton, one of the most impressive things about the new building for Parker’s Southeast Community Outreach Cares (SECORCares or SECOR) is the design of its free food market.

“There aren’t any rows” said Gorton, CEO of SECOR, gesturing with his arms to illustrate the U-shaped route of the market. “The guests love it because it feels spacious and they can look and they don’t feel like they’re being hurried, but they’re moving faster than they were before.”

The shape of the food market was designed for efficiency, and it’ll be necessary with the record-breaking crowds Gorton has already seen and expects more of as SECOR grows into its new offices at 17151 Pine Lane, across from its old place.

The new SECOR facility is owned by the Solomon Foundation, a Christian philanthropy investment group worth $600 million, and triples SECOR’s square footage at the same lease rate it paid at its old place — 15% of its market value.

SECOR outgrew its old place, also owned by the Solomon Foundation, of 8,500 square feet, within its first year there, Gorton said. In 2017, the foundation decided to build a new space for SECOR. Gorton only said he needed about a 15,000 square-foot space. Solomon gave them 23,557.

Doug Cozier, CEO of the Solomon Foundation, said it was a dream of his to provide a space for ministries and nonprofits, as well as the foundation’s offices, under one roof. Cozier met with Gorton, who illustrated SECOR’s need for a bigger space, and he was moved.

“I thought ‘I think this is god telling me there’s a huge need in this community. We just need a bigger space,’”

Cozier said.

SECOR opened its doors to the food market at its new offices Oct. 31. Immediately, Gorton said, SECOR served a record-breaking crowd. Gorton said on Nov. 7 SECOR’s food market served 77 families in six hours, most of them spending half as much time as in SECOR’s old building.

“We would have had to stop at 60 and tell the others ‘no’ if we had been in the other building,” Gorton said. “We expect that number will probably go up to 100 on Wednesday and Saturdays” — SECOR’s busiest days.

The new Solomon Centre building welcomed SECOR along with Parker Secret Closet and Lifeline Christian Mission. There is space for a fourth nonprofit to move into the building. The building, across from the original Solomon Centre, has become Parker’s nonprofit hub. Gorton said he hopes it can allow SECOR to continue to serve the entire South Metro area.

“We will serve agencies all over the South Metro area,” Gorton said. “So we’re very excited about that.”

SECOR’s mission is to provide food, personal items and monetary and budgeting assistance to families in need.

There are some renovations still to be made to the new place. The warehouse will eventually have massive storage racks to store items for SECOR and all tenants of the new building. The phone lines aren’t all hooked up yet and the staff and volunteers are still wrapping their heads around serving larger and larger crowds than SECOR has ever seen. But it’s a problem the team doesn’t mind having at the moment.

“It’s a huge milestone in Parker,” Gorton said. “We are setting a pace for this city by saying ‘Hey, we don’t have to be a little city anymore.’ We can be a place that is significant and making an impact on the whole metro area.”
