Dressing up for Halloween is standard protocol for many kids. For students of the Elizabeth High School marching band, it meant donning their red, white and black uniforms to compete in this year’s 1A/2A/3A State Marching Band Championships on

Oct. 31 in Grand Junction.

Elizabeth placed fifth out of seven bands in the 2A division. Brass captain Kyle Melchior is pleased with their performance. “We did end up improving our score immensely, ending our year with a 70.15 — which is amazing,” he said.

Their success was also bittersweet.

Marching band director Megan O’Connor noted: “We competed in semifinals in the morning and missed the finals by three-tenths of a point.”

“It was a great improvement from last year,” said drum major Skyler

Rumbold.

The school ranked sixth last year. In 2014, it placed fourth. “It was the first time in nine years that we made state finals,” O’Connor said. It was also her first year as director of the marching band.

O’Connor has a decisive style and manages the group with ease. “I have a pretty high standard of behavior.

The majority of my kids aren’t going into music, but I hope that what they do here will help them succeed in whatever job they’re in,” she said.

Each summer the entire band at-

tends “camps” at the school, which consist of all-day rehearsals. “We spend a lot of time together bonding, we live and breathe each other for four days,” O’Connor said.

With 45 band and color guard members and eight staff at the helm, they created a show for this season titled “Hues.”

One couple’s mission of matrimony Veterans who met at Cimarron Veterans Day assembly now married

Erin and Cole Vollenweider lived in Parker and went to the same schools a year apart, graduating in 2006 and 2007, but they didn’t meet until a middle school Veterans Day assembly in 2010, where they talked to students about the oaths they swore to protect the United States.

Five years later, they took another vow, to each other.

Cole, a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps who had returned from active infantry duty in Afghanistan, had been coming to Cimarron Middle School in Parker to talk about his service since his boot camp days. Erin, a medical flight specialist with the Air Force, was nervous about her first presentation to the students.

“We started off taking turns, then we kind of just talked together,” Erin said. “It just clicked.”

By the time they both left the school that day, Erin didn’t have the jitters anymore. And, thanks to the teacher who coordinated the assembly, she had Cole’s phone number.

tion, we were just going to have a friendship,” Erin said. “Because of our life schedules, we didn’t see each other again until that January.”

The two began dating in September 2011, almost a year after the Cimarron assembly, and were married in 2015.

They don’t talk shop much now, but

Unopposed Brauchler poised for next term District attorney looks ahead to four more years and beyond

When 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler first ran for office in 2012, he endured 30 debates and candidate forums, and a fundraising battle. The Republican defeated Democrat Ethan Feldman 52 percent to 48 percent in the general election.

While he isn’t facing any challengers in his bid for reelection this year, he’s been meeting with seniors and other groups of voters to let them know what he’s done in his first term.

“I like to make our voters the best-educated in the state,” he said. “I don’t think a lot of people really understand what the district attorney does.”

National Guard, a position he said allows him to stay close to his home in Parker and his job overseeing the D.A.’s office. The judicial district encompasses Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

One thing he is proud of

is the influence he’s had on others in his office and their military service.

“As of right now, 10 percent of our prosecutors are active duty guard or reserve members, and from every branch,” Brauchler said. “I don’t take any credit for putting that in their heart, but I do take credit for creating an environment that made it so inviting and welcoming and supportive that they would say ‘I’m going to pursue this.’

I hope that that continues.”

While his notoriety has come from prosecuting high-profile cases like that of Aurora movie theater murderer James Holmes, Brauchler prefers to talk about the work he’s done to restructure his office, such as slowing the rate its budget is increasing and growing the Douglas County branch’s staff to allow it to function more independently.

Looking forward, Brauchler would like to see funding for special prosecutors for gangs and heroin, two problems he said are getting worse nationally and locally.

“To effectively tackle

those pieces, you have to have targeted law enforcement and prosecution,” he said, describing the position as someone who would be involved with a case from the arrest to the sentencing.

A discussion on Brauchler’s future plans wouldn’t be complete without asking whether or not he plans to seek higher office. His name has been floated as a candidate for governor and U.S. senator in the past, and Brauchler isn’t shy about revisiting at least one of those possibilities, if it keeps him close to home.

“I am probably an average father at best. I am not going to be any better spending more of my time in Washington, D.C., away from my family,” he said of his decision not to run for Senate.

“The only other big office that is out there in the near future is the governor’s office,” Brauchler said. “I’m flattered to think people think I can do that job, and some people do. At the appropriate time, I will give it more serious consideration and see if there’s something I can do.”

Commissioners won’t OK written transcript County sticks with decision that recording is sufficient

Elbert County citizens hoping for a written transcription of the controversial Elbert County Board of Commissioners meeting that took place on Nov. 18, 2015, were left disappointed after the board’s regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 26.

Nearly a year after that Nov. 18 BOCC meeting, which was described as Jerry Springer-like by a resident during his public comment at the time, the meeting’s controversial nature is still affecting current meeting agendas.

Nearly an hour into the 90-minute meeting on Oct. 26, BOCC Chairman Larry Ross brought an agenda item to the table for the second time this year, labeled as a Memorandum of Understanding for Control of Confidential Data.

This particular agenda item called for the BOCC to “engage a qualified court transcriber to transcribe the audio of the Nov. 18 meeting.”

The audio of this meeting has been made available on the Elbert County website and can be found under the Audio Recordings section, but no written record has been made available.

The agenda item went nowhere, as the motion to engage a qualified court transcriber was not enacted and died on the floor. However, this did not stop a discussion about the matter, in which Commissioner Robert Rowland spoke on the topic at length.

Holding a portable USB flash drive to the crowd, which supposedly contained an audio file from a BOCC meeting on June 15, Rowland an-

nounced that this same agenda item had already been brought up, discussed and acted on. In his summary of the June 15 meeting, Rowland made his point of view known.

“Again, we’ve never transcribed (a meeting) for one or two particular requests. I believe, still to this day, that the use of public funds in any amount is fiduciarily required to be for the betterment of the entire county.”

Rowland went on to summarize the June 15 meeting, stating that the BOCC decision was to designate the audio recording of the Nov. 18 meeting as official record and post it to the county website, which was done.

Mirroring Rowland’s sentiment, Commissioner Danny Wilcox provided his opinion, stating that the allocation of public funds that would be necessary to transcribe the audio of the Nov. 18 meeting would not be a worthwhile use of such funds.

Wilcox views the audio recording as sufficient public record of the meeting.

After the meeting, Elbert County citizen Marlene Groves, who was one of three citizens to provide public comment during the meeting, gave her point of view on this issue.

“Today, two of the commissioners voted against transparency and against the citizens when they would not support having minutes of the Nov. 18 BOCC meeting available to its citizens,” Groves said.

For Groves, the BOCC’s unwillingness to transcribe the Nov. 18 meeting and make it available as public record is symbolic of a larger issue in Elbert County regarding transparency.

On the Elbert County website, Groves points out, the last minutes that were provided for a BOCC meeting dates back to a meeting Oct. 4, with minutes of the Nov. 18 meeting never being provided to the public.

black sheep in a way,” he said. “You’ve done things and seen things the average person wouldn’t feel comfortable having a discussion about, so it’s nice to have someone who understands the way things are.”

Erin didn’t deploy until the two had already been dating for more than a year. In 2012, she joined a medical flight evacuation unit at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.

She took comfort knowing Cole was waiting at home, and that he knew what she was going through.

“The first month we weren’t in touch much, but it made it easier to know that he got it,” Erin said. “I didn’t have to explain if I couldn’t call because he understood.”

But after the things he saw during his tours of duty, Cole was less at ease with the situation.

“You feel helpless, you feel like you’re watching someone you care about getting in a car accident and you can’t do anything

to stop it,” he said.

They live in Parker, under the same roof, but scheduling time together is still a challenge. Cole just began working for the Commerce City Police Department and doesn’t have a set schedule, while Erin works 12-hour shifts at Craig Hospital and still serves as technical sergeant in the Air Force reserves.

A rare dinner at a restaurant, or even running errands on one of Erin’s days switching from day to night shifts, now counts as a date.

“We just know that sometimes you don’t know when the other one is coming home,” Erin said. “We adapt and change, our whole relationship has been that way.”

Some couples would be frustrated by the lack of time together, but for Erin and Cole, whose experiences have shown them how precious life is, any time together is a gift.

“We capitalize on the time we have together,” Cole said. “We try to make the best of everything.”

with several contenders, she had to write an essay, interview with a panel, conduct the national anthem, and was judged on marching ability. The auditions were held in March, and results were announced the day before spring break “to avoid major drama,” O’Connor said with a smile.

An aspect of marching band that people often do not realize is the physicality. “It’s very athletic and taxing,” said O’Connor.

“They did a study and found that 12 minutes into a marching band show, the heart rate of the members is the same as a marathon runner in the 20th mile.”

To prepare for the rigor of performing in heavy uniforms while carrying instru-

ments, the students do a lot of conditioning, with “running, pushups, crunches, to be physically prepared,” explained O’Connor. Rehearsal time added up to more than 300 hours, she said.

Last year O’Connor opened the group to eighth-graders in order to help them “make the smooth transition from middle school to high school, to dispel rumors of what it’s like to work with me, the time commitment, also to add bodies to the show,” she said.

With the 2016 season complete, Rumbold remains bright. “We still have marching band class, which ends up turning into concert band,” she said. “I am so proud of every single member, and happy to call them all my family.”

With the month of November upon us and Thanksgiving just a couple of weeks away, I am finding myself consumed with feelings of gratitude. Perhaps I am finding myself in this state of abundant gratitude because of the holiday and how we are all called to remember and give thanks for all of our blessings. I am not exactly sure what is driving the immense feeling of gratitude, but I am very glad it is here.

Over these next few weeks I will continue to explore the attitude of gratitude and what it really means to give thanks and show appreciation for what we have been given, what we have earned, the people in our lives, and for all of the opportunities that are still to come.

Zig Ziglar used to share these statements

when talking about gratitude, “Gratitude is one of the healthiest of all human emotions,” and he also shared, “The more that we can show gratitude for what we already have, the more that we will have to be grateful for.” So as much as we want to look into our future or look to new opportunities to be thankful for, it is so very important to first recognize and appreciate the people and the things that are already in our lives at this very moment.

Too often I believe that many of us get caught up in a “Grass is always greener on the other side” mentality. We stop appreciating what we have right in front of us and we seek to add more toys or “things” to our lives, thinking that those will bring us greater joy and happi-

ness.

And believe it or not, there are those amongst us who have stopped showing appreciation or recognizing the people in their lives who have always been there for them and who will always be there for them in the future. These great friends or family members are those who never seem to say “No,” and who walk by our side during our victories and who stand next to us in our very worst moments. Whether we need a ride, a loan or a loaf of bread, these individuals are our constant “go-to” people. So why don’t we let them know more frequently?

Most of us open our hearts on occasion, but many do this far too infrequently. While this is a learned trait, it’s also something that is easily changed. It’s easily changed if you want to. An open heart provides more joy, better health, improved and stronger relationships, lots more fun, and an overall glow. With all of these benefits, what are you waiting for?

We’ve been trained since little kids to behave a certain way and use our heads more than our hearts. Much of this training was from the understanding that our brains are our “knowledge” organ. Our hearts were thought to be a muscle designed to pump blood throughout our body.

case. We are far more powerful and diverse than originally thought. Rigorous studies by HeartMath, Heart/ Mind Connection, etc., are trail-blazers in demonstrating this connection and using it to your benefit.

Switching to a habit of opening your heart is very achievable. No magic involved, but it does take intention and discipline. You’re spent years building the habit of living with a closed heart so you can’t stop doing this immediately. It’s like turning an aircraft carrier around – it doesn’t happen on a dime. Every time I write a sentence without misspelling a word, I point to the sky.

Every time I get home with all of the groceries that were on my list, I Craig Marshall point to the Smith sky.

Every time I finish all of the laundry and fold all of the towels neat like, I point to the sky.

I am not exactly sure why I do it — point to the sky, I mean — but I see others, mostly athletes, do it, and it must hold some benefits.

Many athletes are very superstitious, and that could be part of it. Or it could be they are thanking a higher power for a bunt single.

I have very few superstitions.

I used to wear a particular sweatshirt when my team played. I don’t think it ever changed the outcome.

I don’t throw salt over my shoulder, because my ants are addicted to sodium.

I met Jennifer on the 13th, and that was just about the

luckiest day of my life, so the number 13 holds no fears or concerns for me.

I regularly walk under ladders.

If I see a black cat, I ask it to cross my path.

I broke a mirror on purpose in college.

The assignment was to draw a self-portrait using a mirror.

I was self-absorbed and full of doubts about myself at the same time, so working with a shattered mirror’s reflection seemed absolutely correct.

I face all of my products, but I don’t think that counts as a superstition.

Facing a product means that the label faces frontally.

I know it sounds fussy, but I have a graphic designer living inside of me, and I appreciate good graphics.

If there are two similar products on a store’s shelf, and one has a better looking label, I will purchase it, even if it is more expensive.

I do have some habits or routines that are unorthodox, but I don’t think they are done to promote good luck, or to fend off bad luck.

change this in an instant.

What you can do in an instant is make the decision to change and start a new habit. From this point forward it takes diligence and a commitment, but you will ultimately succeed. As with building any habit, reward yourself along the way. Look for things during your day to open your heart to. Anything — just find more and more things to appreciate. The sunrise. The fact that you have a beautiful house to live in. Your health. The great variety of people you work with. Find something in each person that you can open your heart to. The fact that you live in an abundant, free, society with a plethora of choices. It really doesn’t matter what it is, just open your heart to it and find something to love about it.

Look for reasons to open your heart.

Get creative and make a game of it.

With practice you’ll get very good at viewing life with an open heart and this will become your “normal” mode of operation. You won’t remember how you did it otherwise and will soon forget your old ways of living and making decisions. There isn’t anything wrong with that way – it’s just not as complete and is detrimental to your long-term health. By opening your heart you gain input which is oftentimes much better

than just making a rational decision.

The way we were taught to live life and make decisions is just that – a way. Not necessarily “THE WAY” — just a way. There are a multitude of ways to live and choices to make. So why not start living with an open heart and relish the new experiences and feelings? Add another dimension to your life’s experiences and move forward with a sense of love and anticipation. These are much preferred over dread and loathing.

Begin to make decisions using your heart. Instead of living in your head all the time and making “logical” choices, begin to incorporate your heart and the “feeling” of the situation or desired action. Your heart is a great integrator and will take into account your mental and emotional states and guide you. We are now learning that your heart is actually able to tap into other vibrations and integrate this information if you will only allow it.

we sent them a “thank you” card or small gift showing our appreciation?

You see, showing gratitude and appreciation doesn’t have to be celebrated with huge grandiose gifts or acknowledgments. As a matter of fact most times the person receiving that “Thank you” would prefer to stay under the radar and is much happier with a simple “Thank you.”

One of my favorite ways of showing someone how grateful I am for all that they may be doing in my life or have done for me at some point is to do something special in return. If I have received a terrific meal I will usually take over washing the dishes and clearing the table. If someone helped me on a project or at an event I will make sure to acknowledge their efforts to the audience or to my colleagues.

And if it is someone who consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty I will make it a point to send them a note, an email, a text, or I will call them and share my gratitude personally.

That message may look like or sound something like this, “I just wanted to call and let you know that you made my day today. I don’t always have the opportunity to share with you how much I appreciate all that you do, but today when I woke up I remembered just how blessed I am to have you in my life. Whenever we have a chance to

talk or exchange messages you always lift me up and that means the world to me. You are a true friend and today I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you.”

Trust me, if you send out two or three of those messages to the special people in your life you will probably receive some fairly positive, emotional, and thankful messages in return. And don’t limit yourself to two or three, I have found myself sending out five to 10 in a given day. There should be no limit or ceiling to the number of grateful messages that you share with those who you truly appreciate.

Just imagine how you might feel if someone sent you such a message, I’ll bet you would probably feel pretty good, maybe even awesome. The attitude of gratitude is so very powerful.

So how about you? As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday are you taking the time to appreciate what you already have as well as the most important people in your life? Or could you use a little reminder to help develop that attitude of gratitude? I never say “gesundheit” when someone sneezes. Instead I say, “You asked for it. You got it. Toyota.”

If someone tries to pull the “interrupting cow, knock-knock” joke on me, I automatically begin to sing “Help Me Rhonda.” I can’t explain it.

I have no peculiar routines before I paint or write, unless you consider a slice of haggis and a glass of Ovaltine a peculiar routine.

Each of us has endearing moments of behavior that are unique, and develop over time, and that may seem odd to others.

How we arrange our shirts and shoes, for example. What do you do with currency? Are the portraits this way and that, or are they all frontal in

your wallet?

Candles, crosses, charms, talismans, amulets, totems — do any of them do any good?

I met a man who operated a fourleaf clover farm. He was the unluckiest man I have ever known.

Some people have been hit by lightning more than once, and some have won the lottery more than once.

I’d look them up if I had the resources. I think it would make a good documentary.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the unlucky ones have the very same superstitions that the lucky ones have.

Even so, I keep an acorn at the window. It keeps the lightning out.

or years while working retail, Barbara Penning would find herself in a new city during the holidays.

“When that happened, I’d try to think of ways I could celebrate the season differently,” she remembered.

“I’d do things like go to a food kitchen and volunteer there.”

And now, as director of volunteer programs and in-kind donations with the Action Center in Jefferson County, a nonprofit that provides resources to homeless and low-income families, Penning wants everyone to have the same opportunity to give back.

“The need is huge, and we have opportunities for anyone who wants to contribute,” she said. “I always tell our volunteers to use their gifts. If they’re very organized, we have jobs for that, if you like working with clothing, we have jobs for that, or if you just want to work on your own, we have jobs for you.”

People find themselves alone during the holidays for myriad reasons: Perhaps they are new to their town, perhaps family and friends are all away on vacation or have prior commitments, or maybe they just have a small social circle. But they can all make the holidays a trying time.

“The holidays are tough, especially because so much is built around family and friends,” said Shannon L. Gwash, director of wellness services at the Jefferson Center for Mental Health.

“There are times when that is just not an option for people.”

The transition from summer to winter is often when seasonal affective disorder starts, with colder weather and longer nights, and this can also make the holidays feel isolating and depressing.

One of the best ways to fight off holiday loneliness, Gwash said, is to go be around people.

own,” she said. “Even if you don’t interact with anyone, just being out helps.

Instead of making coffee at home, go to a cafe and read for an hour or just sit.”

Talking to someone also is a good idea, Gwash said. That can be a friend or family member, but the Jefferson Center and other mental health organizations have contacts for short-term therapy.

“A lot of people think going to therapy is this long, drawn-out process,” she said. “We have a brief therapy program for people who need just a few sessions so they can share how they’re feeling.

You don’t have to have a diagnosis.”

Volunteering is a great way to help people and improve one’s own mood, and can do wonders for mental health, Gwash said. Especially around the holidays, organizations like Douglas/ Elbert Task Force,The Action Center, food banks and veterans organizations can always use people to help.

“We can’t do anything without volunteers,” said Jenny Follmer, deputy director of the Douglas/Elbert Task Force.

The task force is a nonprofit that provides assistance to residents of the two counties who are in serious economic need. “Going into the busiest season of the year, we have a place for anyone who wants to donate their time.”

One of the most common charitable holiday activities are collection drives for needed items like food, clothing and toys. And the more successful a drive, the more help is needed on the beneficiary organization’s end to unpack and sort everything, Penning said.

“We start getting all kinds of stuff for our annual Santa Shop at the end of November and early December,” she said.

“We always need to people to be here to move all the donated items to the right place and get it organized.”

To keep things running smoothly during the holidays, Penning estimates The Action Center needs about 15 volunteers a day to help with various projects. The center also hosts an annual Thanksgiving food distribution event on Nov. 20, and its Santa Shop is from Dec. 12 through 17. Both these events require even more hands on deck.

“There’s not a better way to kick off the season and to get a smile than helping a parent or grandparent pick out a gift for their child,” she said.

The Douglas/Elbert Task Force has a thrift store and food bank, and can use volunteers in all areas, from cashiers to shelf stockers and pricers.

“There is so much more stress during the holidays, and colder weather means higher utility bills as well,” Follmer said. “So many people are struggling, and we’re here to help in any way we can.”

Regardless of what a person decides to do, Penning said helping others is the best cure for holiday loneliness.

“The holidays are one of the few times when the world comes together,” she said. “Go with your instincts, and find a way to use what gives you pleasure to help others.”

Learning about the dangers of knee injuries For female athletes, an anterior cruciate ligament injury can mean months on sidelines

Cardinals keep up the pace at state Elizabeth boys, girls post strong showing

Elizabeth cross country runners didn’t bring home trophies, but both the Cardinals’ boys and girls teams turn in good performances against Colorado’s best at the Oct. 29 Class 3A state cross country championships at the NorrisPenrose Event Center in Colorado Springs.

“We are very excited to have both teams here today,” Cardinals coach Alan Small said before the races began. “This is the first time in school history both teams qualified for state, so it is a special moment not only for our cross country runners but for our school and for our community.”

He said this is his fifth year coaching the program and he has watched the size and the quality of the team improve. He said the middle schools have cross country programs, which is a great feeder program for the high school.

“We have talented kids and we run well despite the fact the boys and girls teams are both very young team. We don’t have a single senior on the roster this season,” he said.

Alamosa won the boys varsity team trophy with a score of 77 points and Elizabeth finished 13th in the field of 20 teams with 309 points.

David Fine led the Cardinals to the finish line and was the only Elizabeth runner to win a top 10 medal as he finished third in the field of 151 runners with a time of 16:14.

“It was a fun race, even though it was hot out there today,” Fine said.

“I went out pretty fast the first mile and overall I was pretty happy the way I ran the race.”

Fine said he felt blessed.

“I prayed before the race and asked for strength and speed to run well,” he said. “I prayed to finish at least third and the Lord answered my prayer.”

Peak to Peak Academy won the Class 3A girls varsity team trophy with 57 points and the Cardinal girls finished seventh with a score of 198 points. Teams could enter seven runners and all five Cardinal runners were sophomores.

Ashten Loeks was the first Elizabeth runner across the finish line and she was 18th overall with a time of 20:19. Brenna Jones was the second Cardinal to complete the race as she was 35th with a time of 21:10.

“This was a hard course today.

That hill toward the end of the course was really challenging,” Jones said. “I ran the race like I wanted to run it. I finished second for our team, and that is something I have never done before. I also think I had a personal-best time.”

She said her brother was a runner and, because he looked like he was having fun running, she decided to join him.

“I have fun running,” she said. “It is always a challenge and I am always pushing myself to run better.”

Ponderosa junior Maddie Gabel has a vivid memory of last season’s state playoff soccer game in which she tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.

“I slid and blocked a shot, and once I made contact (with the ground), that’s when I heard it pop,” she said of the sound coming from her knee. “It took 10 months total for a full recovery.”

Gabel was far from alone in her plight on the sidelines.

Numerous studies have concluded that girls and women are more susceptible to ACL injuries than boys and men, with most reports stating female athletes are four to eight times more likely to tear the knee ligament.

“There are more ACL injuries in women ... Younger women are more at risk, usually the adolescents, teenagers and up to the early 20s, in general,” said Dr. Michele Wolcott, an associate professor in the University of Colorado Department of Orthopedics.

In the Douglas County School District over the past five years, 42 ACL injuries in girls have been reported.

Katherine West, head trainer for Jefferson County Public Schools, said there were 69 knee injuries among girls in Jeffco in the past six years, and 27 were ACL injuries.

Why does it happen?

Sports like soccer, basketball and volleyball that require one-step deceleration, changing direction and jumping put the most strain on athletes’ ACLs, those of girls and women in particular, experts say.

But why are female athletes more susceptible to the injury?

“Obviously, there is a difference between females and males,” said Dr. Mitchell Seemann, team physician for Regis University and D’Evelyn High School. “There have been a couple conferences over the past few years that have come together to try to figure out why (there are more ACL injuries among women). The most common reason for it is what we call neuromuscular factors.”

Other factors, experts say, include ligaments that tend to have more give, a smaller ACL and tendency toward poor, flat-footed landings after jumping, which puts the knee in a positon to buckle and stress the ACL. “We can address some factors,” Wolcott said. “We can’t change their skeleton or size, so we work on (what) we can, which is how you jump, land and control your landings.

“There are all sorts of jumps, landing drills, running around cones and doing some agility (drills), doing the cutting and pivoting things when you are not in a game situation so you are controlled and focused on doing it correctly.”

Trying to prevent injuries Seemann and West attempted to establish a Jeffco districtwide ACLinjury prevention plan called the Cincinnati Sportsmetrics Program a few years ago.

“We did have to abandon it, and we learned something,” Seemann said.

“One, coaches don’t want to take 15 or 20 minutes out of their practice to do this kind of stuff. The other factor is

Some area coaches are trying to take proactive measures.

Horizon’s softball team lost starting pitcher Kayla Kascak, who said she was hurt during a routine outfield drill in late August.

“It is very important to train both the front quads and back hamstrings while training the leg muscles,” he said.

Castle View’s new girls soccer coach, Nichol Rodriguez, played college soccer for Notre Dame and the Puerto Rican national team and seven years in the Women’s Premier Soccer League.

“We will be implementing ACL prevention once a week during the season at the end of practices,” Rodriguez said of what’s ahead this spring. “Also, all of the lifting that is done in the offseason seeks to strengthen all of the muscles and ligaments around the knee for a preventive measure.”

Former University of Utah and National Basketball Association standout Keith Van Horn is executive director of the Premier Basketball Club, which has locations in Evergreen, Parker and Grand Junction.

He said the club puts a strong focus on ACL-prevention techniques.

“The teams that I coach at the beginning of every practice, with the girls, we implement a few warmup drills that incorporate the proper landing technique, knee positioning, hip strengthening and a number of different things in areas that tend

to cause ACL injuries. We started working with an agility group that comes in and works with all of our kids.”

Arapahoe girls basketball coach Jerry Knafelc has had one athlete, a junior varsity player, go down with an ACL injury in the past six seasons. He said training in the summer, fall and during the season has helped mitigate the ACL injuries.

Knafelc said the workouts include movement training, bleacher jumps, lifts with an emphasis on getting the glutes to activate, making sure the knees don’t come in when jumping or landing, and having girls look in the mirror to make sure their posture is correct.

“We put a lot of time into it,” he said.

“That’s the only way it can happen … You have to have somebody with them to make sure they are doing it correctly.”

No such thing as prevention?

Gabel, the Ponderosa soccer player, said she’s not sure how much the drills and exercises help to prevent injuries like the one she sustained.

“Before I got hurt, I had done those exercises and after I got hurt, I have done a lot of them,” Gabel said. “As a preventive measure, I don’t really think it helps, but it’s always good to strengthen your muscles and try to do anything you can.

“What it comes down to, if it’s going to tear, it’s going to tear.”
