More than two dozen community members gathered at the Elizabeth Library the morning of Sept. 12 to speak with Elizabeth Mayor Megan Vasquez and community leaders to discuss the town’s comprehensive plan, which has been a point of debate since more than 700 people attended a presentation at Elizabeth High School on Aug. 21.

Vasquez, board of trustees member Tammy Payne, Police Chief Stephen Hasler and Fire Chief T.J. Steck were peppered with questions about the process used to develop the comprehensive plan, and allegations that Vasquez and community leaders developed the plan based solely on their own visions for the future of the town.

“Is it your vision that feeds this?” asked one attendee.

“We don’t want Parker or Castle Rock. You guys need to listen to the people who live here,” stated another.

“I don’t feel like the town is very good at communicating their process and reasoning,” said one concerned citizen.

18th Judicial District investigator honored Matt Hanagan received Mike Bell Award as Investigator of the Year STAFF REPORT

An investigator from the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has been honored by the Colorado District Attorneys Council, according to a news release. Matt Hanagan received the 2019 Mike Bell Award as Investigator of the Year at the organization’s annual conference.

Hanagan joined the DA’s office in March 2015. He leads the FLEX team and works with the Cold Case Unit, among other responsibilities. The FLEX team in the investigations unit works to protect victims and witnesses from threats associated with criminal cases.

District Attorney George Brauchler nominated Hanagan for the award.

“Hanagan was the logical choice to head this unit, due to his leadership, expertise, his genuine and impassioned concern for victims of crime, and unrivalled tenacity,” Brauchler said in his nomination. “Under Matt’s leadership, our FLEX team has been extremely successful at locating and maintaining contact with victims and witnesses, and in addressing the many complications that tend to arise in

Brauchler cited the prosecution of Terrance and Tina Black, who were convicted of the murder of a witness to a marijuana store robbery they orchestrated.

“Without the team’s work in producing and keeping these important and vulnerable witnesses safe, the outcome of these cases would likely have been very different,” Brauchler said in his nomination letter. “Matt’s team is

in the business of protecting victims and witnesses. They save lives. They are unmatched in their success in that business.”

Brauchler also cited Hanagan’s work to bring the investigation unit into 100 percent POST compliance with state law enforcement standards, as well as his willingness to train and teach others.

Hanagan is a certified instructor in defensive tactics, FTO, Taser, and is a State of Colorado Crisis Intervention Team member. He also teaches on topics including criminal procedure, stops and seizures to law enforcement academies, new detective and citizen academies. He regularly speaks to students at Arapahoe High School about basic drug facts and life skills.

“I am honored to be nominated for this award, let alone be selected to receive it,” Hanagan said in the news release. “It is my privilege to work in the investigations unit, the courtroom and the community on behalf of victims of crime. It is only because of the support of my colleagues, DA Brauchler and other members of the office that I am able to be successful.”

Before joining the district attorney’s office, Hanagan worked for the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office for 15 years, where he held many positions, including patrol officer, South Metro Drug Task Force member, Impact Team member, and supervisor with the rank of sergeant.

Vasquez admitted that the presentation given on Aug. 21 was frustrating to residents, as it was presented by the consulting firm Rick Engineering, and didn’t allow time for residents to speak.

“We failed in notifying citizens in the concept of getting citizen input,” said Vasquez, who will be holding weekly Coffee with the Mayor meetings until the issue is resolved. “What would be a better way to get the information out?”

Citizens responded with ideas of putting up fliers announcing meetings in public places, such as Walmart, Safeway and the post office, running notices in local newspapers, and placing signs at each end of town announcing upcoming public meetings.

Currently residents of Elizabeth receive a copy of the town newsletter in their utility bills. Police Chief Hasler mentioned changing the sign board on Highway 86.

“We can make sure these ideas get implemented,” said Vasquez. “We can see that you feel your thoughts aren’t being heard.”

Payne said the upcoming meetings will be better structured to address specific questions and allow plenty of time for resident input.

“Our goal is to give a presentation and allow time for citizens to ask questions,” said Payne. “We are trying to organize it in a way that’s meaningful

Attendees next turned to the process used by town officials when approving development within the town, with several accusing officials of unanimously approving every development.

Vasquez pointed out that many of the recent developments were approved before they took office. She also shot down rumors of a 1,400-home development the board is accused of getting ready to approve.

“Gold Creek was approved in 2008,” said Vasquez. “That has nothing to do with this board. The Jim Marshall plan you are talking about has not

presented to the board, there is no site plan, we’ve seen nothing.”

Elizabeth resident Wayne Seifried implored Vasquez and board members to stop growth in the town, even if it requires legal action.

“Stop growth right now. You’re planning for an increase in numbers, let’s just cut the numbers down now. We may have to go to court.” said Seifried.

When asked by attendees and Vasquez how to do that, Seifried replied “We don’t know, we’re not officials.”

Vasquez talked about the zoning process, and the role town officials and the planning commission plays in approving new developments.

“We vote on whether or not it meets all guidelines and zoning. If a development does, we can’t legally tell them no. They would probably sue the town then, and most likely they would win,” said Vasquez.

After hearing more about the zoning process, several attendees asked how community members could be more involved in the direction of growth in the town and Elbert County. Fire Chief Steck fielded that question.

“Almost nobody shows up to town or county meetings,” said Steck. “The majority of information on Facebook and Nextdoor is completely inaccurate, and that’s not helping our community. If we can work together and sit and talk like this, we will be so much better off.”

Vasquez encouraged residents to attend town meetings, volunteer for committees and suggested the idea of a town blog, as well as how to address confusion with residents about Elizabeth town boundaries vs. Elbert County.

“The Town of Elizabeth is happy that county residents want to be engaged and involved with us. We encourage them to check our webpage regularly and attend our board meetings, follow us on Facebook, and to contact us if they would like to receive our monthly town newsletter. In addition, county residents can participate and give their input on items that come before the board. We are also exploring additional ways for county residents to be more directly engaged with the town as well,” said Vasquez.

Some Democrats on shaky political ground with proposed fracking bans Polling generally supports move, but some states depend heavily on drilling method

Several Democratic presidential candidates are running on a promise to ban fracking — and stepping on unstable political ground as they do so.

An all-out prohibition on the controversial natural gas extraction process — backed by Sens. Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren — has been well received by the liberal and climate-focused voters closely watching the primary. But the proposal also threatens to antagonize unions and voters in areas that depend on oil and gas for jobs.

That opposition may be fiercest in some of the states Democrats care about most. Banning fracking could have a dramatic impact on the economy in Pennsylvania, a state Democrats consider a must-win in their pursuit of the White House. It could also jeopardize the party’s hold on Colorado, a swing state trending its way, not to mention Democrats’ dreams of winning statewide in Texas, the headquarters of the energy industry and home to 137,000 natural gas wells.

The candidates’ support for a ban is one of the clearest examples of the party’s move to the left in its 2020 primary. Only a few years ago, President Barack Obama celebrated the benefits of fracking — welcoming the energy independence and lower costs that come from an increase in domestic production. To address environmental concerns, his administration focused

on tighter regulation of fracking on federal land but largely steered clear of the state-level battles over whether the practice was dangerous, dirty or accelerating climate change by encouraging dependence on fossil fuels.

Even most environmental groups have advocated for regulation, not an all-out ban.

But climate advocates have enjoyed growing influence in the primary, as the party’s base is increasingly focused on climate change and searching for immediate and meaningful policy solutions — even if the political path for those ideas is unclear.

“To say that you would ban fracking is a very difficult position to take in some key states,” said Rick Ridder, a Democratic strategist who worked as Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential campaign manager and fought fracking in Colorado. “There’s an extremely important distinction between local

control and banning something.”

Candidates split on ban In recent climate-change town halls, Harris, Sanders and Warren called for bans on fracking. Others, like former Vice President Joe Biden and the two Texans in the race — former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke — have balked at such a step, which some campaigns acknowledge would require legislative action.

The politics of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, are highly volatile. The process involves injecting chemicals into the earth to free natural gas trapped in rock. that defies traditional partisan lines. Active energy wells can crush property values and fan fears of contaminated drinking water, air pollution and even earthquakes, which some studies link to fracking.

Polling shows mounting public skepticism about the technique. An Associated Press-NORC poll last month found only 22% of Americans support increasing fracking while 45% oppose it. In 2014, just 31% registered opposition. New York’s Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo, banned the procedure in his state, as has Republican Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland.

Some environmentalists argue that fracking’s poor polling shows Democrats aren’t taking a political risk by calling for a ban now.

“Climate change and the environment are going to be stronger issues for Democrats,” said Mitch Jones of Food and Water Action. “Even in a state like Pennsylvania, taking a strong stand will help whoever is the Democratic nominee.”

At the same time, jobs created by fracking have been a boost to some labor unions. The activity helps the economy and lowers energy costs. A study in 2015 from the nonpartisan Brookings Institution found that households gained $200 from fracking just from lower gas prices alone.

Mike Mikus, a Democratic strategist in Pennsylvania, recalled an uproar in his own historically Republican Pittsburgh suburb when the school district proposed leasing land for fracking.

Meanwhile, the state’s fracking boom has led to the construction of a massive energy plant northwest of the city that has created thousands of construction jobs and was the site of a rally by President Donald Trump last month. The presi-

Mikus said it’s hard to predict the outcome of a Pennsylvania election in which the Democrat wants to end fracking because no Democratic nominee has ever run statewide with that platform before. Democrats who have called for fracking bans have lost statewide primaries.

“I can’t say it eliminates the chance of someone winning, but it makes it tougher,” Mikus said.

Pushback from labor Labor is skeptical. “The issue is economics. People vote with their pocketbooks,” said Rick Bloomingdale, president of Pennsylvania AFL-CIO. “People have got to have a solid financial footing before they think about other issues.”

In Colorado, Democrats won a major battle to rein in fracking after Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, an ex-petroleum geologist, left office. Its new Democratic governor, Jared Polis, has helped finance efforts to fight fracking and complained about an energy company building a well next to land he owns in northern Colorado.

After Democrats won control of the state Legislature in November, they pushed through a bill that allows local governments to regulate energy exploration within their boundaries.

But Polis and most Democrats have stressed they’re not out to ban fracking statewide. Wild Earth Guardians, an environmental group pushing for the end of fracking, has been urging Polis to come out against the technique with no success.

“We need to take the next step forward of saying all fossil fuels are the problem,” said Jeremy Nichols, director of the group’s climate and energy program.

Experts struggle to gauge potency of cannabis edibles

How much marijuana is really in that pot brownie? Chocolate can throw off potency tests so labels aren’t always accurate, and now scientists are trying to figure out why.

In states where marijuana is legal, pot comes in cookies, mints, gummies, protein bars — even pretzels. These commercial products are labeled with the amount of high-inducing THC. That helps medical marijuana patients get the desired dose and other consumers attune their buzz.

But something about chocolate, chemists say, seems to interfere with potency testing. A chocolate labeled as 10 milligrams of THC could have far more and send someone to the emergency room with hallucinations.

The latest research on chocolate, presented in a recent gathering in San Diego, is one example of chemistry’s growing role in the marijuana industry. Besides chocolate’s quirks, chemists are working on extending shelf life, mimicking marijuana’s earthy aroma and making products safer.

The marijuana business is at a crossroads in its push for legitimacy.

The federal government still considers marijuana illegal, yet more than 30 U.S. states allow it for at least medical use.

Even in those states, there are no recognized standard methods for testing products for safety and quality.

companies and testing labs are developing those standards and some are legally protecting their ideas.

Scores of cannabis-related inventions have received U.S. patents, said Boston attorney Vincent Capuano, who holds a doctorate in organic chemistry.

Inventors have patented ways of putting cannabis into milk, coffee pods, ice pops and chewing gum.

“There’s a lot of flash and hipness, snake oil and marketing. But there’s still a lot of real chemical advance happening,” Capuano said of the industry.

Complicated blend Marijuana contains hundreds of chemicals, including cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, a trendy ingredient with unproven health claims.

Some pose challenges when they’re processed. Chocolate is a good example.

“The chocolate itself is affecting our ability to measure the cannabinoids within it,” said David Dawson, chemist and lead researcher at CW Analytical Laboratories in Oakland, California, which tests marijuana.

The more chocolate in the vial, the less accurate the test results, he found.

He thinks some of the THC is clinging to the fat in chocolate, effectively hiding from the test.

Dawson’s research was presented recently at the American Chemical Society meeting in San Diego. The conference included 20 presentations about marijuana’s technical challenges, said Markus Roggen, a Vancouver, British

Columbia-based chemist organizing the program. That’s a big change from a few years ago when presenters didn’t get much beyond the basics such as: “This is THC. This is CBD.” Some in the marijuana industry hold “a mythical belief in the goddess of cannabis,” Roggen said, but chemists view marijuana more objectively. For its part, the industry is learning to accept the “new guard of scientists with a different approach to the plant,” he said.

Another focus of research is a group of chemicals called terpenes that give the marijuana plant its pungent aroma.

Many terpenes get lost or changed in the process of making a THC or CBD extract. But users want a certain smell and taste, said chemist Jeffrey Raber.

Raber heads the Werc Shop, a Los Angeles company that mixes terpenes from lavender, oranges, black pepper and other plants to mimic the flavor and scent of cannabis varieties. The mashups are sold to companies who add them to oils, tinctures and foods.

Monica Vialpando, a San Francisco chemist, is working to prevent drinks with CBD and THC oils from separating into unappealing layers while sitting on the shelf. The oils don’t dissolve in water, a problem for companies trying to create new drinks.

Chemists solve the problem by increasing the surface area of the oil particles and adding ingredients, called surfactants and emulsifiers, to prevent separation. She said consumers should

be skeptical of outrageous claims for edibles and beverages, including that all the THC or CBD in a product will be absorbed. Some potency will always be lost in the digestive system before it hits the bloodstream, she said.

Lack of testing creates enigma But for now, exactly what happens in the human body with most of these products is unclear, Vialpando said, because there’s been very little safety testing of cannabis emulsions in animals, much less in humans.

In Ottawa, Ontario, a Canadian government lab is working on a sensor to help police identify stoned drivers. The goal is to detect cannabinoid molecules in saliva or breath droplets, using light and nanoparticles. Still years away from roadside use, the technology might someday also be used by marijuana growers to determine the peak time to harvest, said chemist Li-Lin Tay, who leads the work for National Research Council of Canada.

To do his work with chocolate, Dawson grinds a THC-infused chocolate bar in a commercial food processor, weighs samples, adds solvent to the material, before measuring the THC potency.

He’s tested cocoa powder, baking chocolate and white chocolate to try to determine what ingredients are hiding the THC during testing.

This will lead to better testing standards and safer products, he said.

“We need good ‘capital S’ science,” he said.

9/11 remembered at Colorado Memorial Stair Climb Thousands gathered on Sept. 11 for Red Rocks event

When the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York happened on Sept. 11, 2001, West Metro Fire firefighter Brad Harmon was sitting in a classroom for paramedics school. He was sent home from class, but his day was far from over.

Harmon served in the U.S. Air Force at the time, and he was sent to the Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, where he stayed the night.

“Life stops. I remember the surrealness of it,” Harmon said. “I remember how scary that night was. Everybody thought the next attack was coming to that base that night. We were on full alert.”

Harmon joined 2,500 others at Red Rocks the morning of Sept. 11 to pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 people — including 343 New York City firefighters — who were killed in the World Trade Center attacks. Harmon, other firefighters from multiple departments and area residents climbed the equivalent of the 110 stories of the WTC. Before the climb ensued, recordings from New York news stations from when the attacks occurred were played, music from the Colorado Em-

You can’t forget that sort of thing,” said Michelle Malin, executive director of the Honor Bell Foundation who brought the Honor Bell to Red Rocks. “If you forget, then we lose our reason to fight for the way of life we have.”

VOICES Farewell to laundromats is a wash come true

I

just washed a load of colors and had a particularly gruesome flashback to a time when I didn’t own a washing QUIET machine.

I didn’t own a wash- DESPERATION ing machine until I was 33. I depended upon the ones in my apartment buildings or public laundromats.

Whenever laundromats are shown in films (“Shopgirl,” “The Blind Side,” Craig Marshall “Sling Blade”) they are almost always Smith sad-looking places with sad-looking people in them.

I went to Yelp to see if things have

changed, at least in Denver, and the Top Ten look nothing like the ones I went to in West Los Angeles, that had a lost-and-found of 40 or 50 unmatched socks, a few peach-colored brassieres, and kitchen towels with pictures of spices on them.

In college, I did my laundry once every two weeks, and I always went at odd hours, to avoid people. However, it meant that others who did their laundry at odd hours to avoid people would be there too. We never spoke. Maybe we nodded to each other, and that was it.

I do not underestimate my washing machine. It is more dependable than I am. It has a lot of different settings on it, but I think it’s just an illusion, and every setting actually performs identically.

How does a box of water know if

something is permanent press or not?

The answer is: It doesn’t, but it sounds reassuring.

When I went to laundromats, I had to sit there and wait. It was two hours of sitting there, and I usually took a book. The time wasn’t misused, but I would rather have been reading the book in my own home.

I was always on the lookout for nefarious types. Los Angeles has a few. However, my relentless self-preservation disallowed the possibility that I might meet someone who would become famous someday.

Here is an imagined conversation.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hello,” I said.

“I’m writing a song. I need a word that rhymes with `mire.’”

“Pyre?”

“Perfect. ‘And our love become a funeral pyre.’ Thanks, man.”

“Shouldn’t it be `becomes a funeral pyre’?”

“Uh, no, man.”

The lighting in the laundromats I went to was always very unflattering.

Maybe that has changed too. It made everything and everyone look worse.

As if David Lynch was behind it.

My first apartment building, on Sawtelle in West Los Angeles, had two washing machines and two dryers. It was always a matter of luck whether they were in use or not.

Sometimes loads would be left in them long after clothes were washed or dried, and that led to: 1. apologies, or 2. disputes. Generally, disputes.

It’s a choice, and if you are reading this column right now, you still have time to make new choices, choose to follow the rewarding path you may be currently on and enjoying, or choose a new and different way forward.

One of my favorite personal development books of all time came out earlier this year. It is titled “Choose to Win” by Tom Ziglar, the proud son of Zig Ziglar and the CEO of the Zig Ziglar Corporation. The subtitle contains the magic and power of the book, “Transform Your Life One Simple Step at a Time.” And within the book I found the strategies and tactics that allowed me to plan and prepare for the next steps and new journey I was about to embark upon.

When asked for the secret to success, Tom offers this response, “The fastest way to success is to replace bad habits with good habits.” Sounds kind of easy right? If it is, why aren’t we all already doing it? It’s because we haven’t yet made the choice to intentionally choose to win. We may have made bad decisions in the past,

hen we are intentional about making our choices and deliberate when it comes to choosing our own path, we typically increase our chances of success. It’s when we allow others to make our choices for us, or when we allow circumstances or even prior habits to dictate our path, that we find ourselves living a WINNING life that is vastly WORDS different than the one we dreamed of or had envisioned for ourselves.

Tariffs increasing market volatility

hank goodness we live in the United States. Among the blessings we share is an economy that has been more self-reliant than most. The United States contains vast amounts of natural resources, the world’s largest economy, a steady central banking system and a relatively resilient consumer. This positively compares our economic and political structure to China, Germany FINANCIAL and Japan.

We as a nation STRATEGIES face a new challenge … the fact that the world’s second largest economy, China, seems to be attempting to take advantage of the rest of the world. Governments around the world imposing tariffs on Patricia Kummer imports is commonplace. The United States’ tariff rate on industrial products — prior to the changes of the last few months — is among the lowest in the world, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The tariff issue has been brewing for the better part of two years. However, the real issue the world has with China may have little to do with actual tariff rates, but rather industrial espionage and China’s global expansionary plans over the long term.

we may have chosen poorly, but we can start turning that all around with the choices we make today and in all the tomorrows yet to come.

Starting with your “why” is step one. Why am I doing this? Why are we doing this? It’s no different with our decision to choose to win. And as you will read in Tom’s book, he points out that discovering our “why” is also a choice. We need to be proactive and understand what we want to be, do, and have in this life. When we do, and when our “why” becomes clear, it will be much easier to make the right choices in each area that supports our goals and dreams. Replace bad habits with good habits, elegantly simple and yet powerfully productive when we choose to do it, when we choose to win.

years have been: • To gain access to China’s economy, importers may need to take on a Chinese partner … someone who may be tied directly to the Chinese government. This allows China control over import levels, prices and business practices of companies.

• Industrial espionage has been a common practice of various Chinesebased companies backed by the Chinese government. Additionally, foreign companies may be required by the Chinese government to provide access to patent-protected manufacturing processes and proprietary industrial secrets. If companies refuse to comply with these requirements, they may not be allowed to sell their products to them.

These requirements have provided the opportunity for China’s companies to mimic high-tech manufacturing efficiencies gained through hard work and investments by companies and people from around the world.

Therefore, we are in a Catch-22.

While someone needs to rein in China, there are definitely concerns around the problems increased tariffs may bring upon our economy.

There could be another round of issues with China coming. There remains about $300 billion of annual Chinese imports into the United States that haven’t been affected by the tariff war … yet. Will the Trump administration apply the new 25% tariff rate to these imports? As of this writing, we don’t know, but, by most accounts, the tinue to positively impact millions of people. His body of work when it comes to developing excellence in ourselves and in others has contributed to the success of many CEO’s, business owners, parents, students, athletes, salespeople, managers, and people from all walks of life. This new book by his son Tom Ziglar, “Choose to Win,” will change your life and contribute to your success. It really will, but only if you first choose that you want to win and desire a change in your own path or journey.

Chinese authorities are not backing down on their practices that we, and much of the rest of the world, want addressed. This amounts to about half of all imports from China, therefore providing the United States significant power to apply further pressure to China’s exports to our country.

The potential impact from these new tariffs could cause an increase in inflation along with slower overall growth in consumer discretionary spending.

Perhaps the biggest impact may be on both consumer and business sentiment. In the meantime, the uncertainty of the trade issues affects capital market price volatility levels and investors may remain wary for the time being.

on target for growing popularity Local ranges offer opportunity to socialize, challenge oneself

rchery is challenging, but can also be a way to relax.

It’s a social sport, as well as a way for an individual to strive to achieve a personal best.

“It gets in your blood,” said Jim Murrow of Morrison. “Over all the years, I’m still learning. It seems like every year I learn something new from somebody.”

Murrow, 63, has been practicing archery since he was a little kid, he said.

It all started when his mother found a bow leaning against a tree somewhere in Colorado’s mountains sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s, Murrow said. Through the years, he started receiving bows and arrows as Christmas and birthday gifts.

“As I got older, I developed the interest,” Murrow said. “And it stayed with me through adulthood.”

“For me, it’s a constant learning process,” Murrow said. “You’re always trying to get better.”

Archery is the sport of using a bow to shoot arrows at a target. It dates back thousands of years — perhaps as long ago as the Stone Age — and evidence of humans using bows and arrows for hunting and warfare can be found around the world.

Today, people practice archery for leisure, hunting and competition.

“Archery is growing in popularity,” said Mark Giebel, director of Highlands Ranch’s Backcountry Wilderness Area.

But despite that, there is a lack of outdoor archery ranges, particularly 3D ranges, in the Denver metro area, Giebel said.

A 3D range is one where participants walk along a course, targeting threedimensional foam models of animals.

To help fill that need, the Highlands Ranch Community Association opened its 3D archery range in the Backcountry Wilderness Area in June 2018. The range is a mile-and-a-half loop on a natural surface trail with 28 separate shooting stations, equipped with lifelike animals as targets.

“The Backcountry range is awesome,” said Josh Bednorz of Highlands Ranch. “It’s a place where my 4-yearold son and myself can spend time together shooting and hiking the trails.”

Being a family-friendly sport is certainly one reason people get into archery, said Mike Schultz, co-owner and general manager of Empty Quiver Archery. But along with that, there are a number of other reasons people enjoy the sport, he added.

The skill-building challenge is one thing people enjoy about it, Schultz said. Anybody can go out and shoot and have fun, he added, “but it’s really hard to get good at it.”

Changing perceptions Adaptive recreation offers options for wide range of participants

Just about five years ago, Dan Boozan, killing time after his shift, struck up a conversation with a bartender who encouraged him to take up rock climbing.

Boozan’s response was automatic: “I can’t go climbing, I have a disability.”

Several years earlier, in 2011, a bicycling accident left a 29-year-old Boozan with a brain injury and nerve damage in his right shoulder. The injury restricted his ability to move his arm apart from limited movement of his hand and bicep.

But the bartender insisted that Boozan, who’d formerly been active outdoors, look into Paradox Sports.

The nonprofit offers adaptive climbing classes and opportunities, which make climbing accessible for individuals with physical disabilities.

Boozan, who is now 37 and lives near Boulder, still had his doubts. After all, “disabled climbing seems kind of oxymoronic,” he said, laughing.

But he decided to give the sport a try and realized that wasn’t the case: “You can choose to embrace your disability and, really, you can still do everything you want to do.”

Soon, Boozan was climbing three to four days a week, going on weeks-long climbing trips alone and with friends, and becoming an ambassador for the nonprofit. Today, he is among those in the adaptive sports and activities community working to raise awareness about the opportunities available for individuals with disabilities.

“Recreation is vital to everybody’s quality of life, and people with disabilities don’t always have those resources or know they have access to them,” said Leah Huffer, senior recreation supervi-

Huffer helps oversee the department’s Adaptive Recreation division, which runs a host of recreational and cultural programs for individuals with disabilities — martial arts, cycling, camping and water-skiing, to name just a few.

The division also works with individuals to provide necessary preparations, such as strength training and adaptive equipment, for classes that run through the general Denver recreation department.

Throughout the metro area, cities and communities put on similar programs, including Lakewood Therapeutic Recreation, Aurora Therapeutic Recreation and South Suburban Therapeutic Adaptive Recreation (STAR).

Authors of Colorado books are named to hall of fame

aturalist, historian, Colorado native and author Mary Taylor Young of Castle Rock is among 21 honored authors who have published books in or about Colorado. They were inducted into the newly formed Colorado Authors Hall of Fame on Sept. 14.

This is the first Authors Hall of Fame in the nation. Young says her next book will be SONYA’S about the history of Cheley Colorado SAMPLER Camps in Estes Park in November: “I Found You in the Mountains: 100 Years of Cheley Colorado Camps.”

To be followed by “a climate-themed sort of memoir about changes I have seen on the property we Sonya Ellingboe own in southern Colorado. Thinking I will call it `Bluebird Seasons.’” She will use her 20-year nature journal as a guide.
