Hundreds gather in salute to first responders Protectors of Elizabeth Tribute brings community together

Luigi and Melissa Casaretto, owners of Sweet Alfas Bake Shop in Elizabeth, know firsthand the importance of local first responders. After Luigi’s brother fell ill with a heart issue while at their home, they made the phone call nobody wants to make — they dialed 911.

“Even though there was a lot of snow, the first responders got there really quick, and were able to get my brother out and to the hospital,” said Luigi. “He got better eventually, but if they hadn’t been there who knows what would have happened.”

The Casarettos joined hundreds of Elizabeth and Elbert County residents to pay tribute to first responders — including personnel from the Elizabeth Police Department, Elbert County Sheriff ’s Office, local firefighters and the Colorado State Patrol — during the annual Protectors of Elizabeth Tribute on Aug. 14. The event was sponsored by the Means Insurance Agency in Elizabeth, and included free food, drinks, live entertainment and activities for children.

Rustic decor shop finds happy home in Elizabeth Goat milk lotions, local honey sold amid ornamental items

A sign on the white, thatched chair directs visitors to walk through a gate, beyond which a stone path winds under the shade of a stately tree to a birch framed welcome sign on a door.

Within is a small shop where the eye is immediately drawn to rustic wall hangings made from 1800-to-1900 corrugated metal and wood from barns in Missouri with messages ranging from humorous to sentimental. Further investigation reveals embroidered towels, custom rolling pins, mugs with pithy sayings, local honey, candles and — against the back wall — an array of goat milk lotions. Any attempt to escape is now futile. The Clever Cow claims another rustic decor lover.

Shari Norton, the owner of the Clever Cow on Main Street in Elizabeth, is responsible for how her shop lures the rustic decor customer. Most items on display are from local artisans who approached her as soon as they knew she was opening a shop with a rustic theme. She quickly found that talent abounds in Elizabeth.

Shari believes, “Using reclaimed materials like old barn wood and corrugated metal with a story behind it is so much more precious to me than similar items from Home Depot.”

Her son, Wyatt, says, “We should have a sign out front that says, `All Animals are Family, not Food.’”

Shari is quick to laugh, and her explanation for the origination of the name Clever Cow hints at her special sense of humor. When they were first selling the corrugated/wood signs, her explanation of their origin and farm sentiments was, “Who hangs out in the barn and sees everything? The cows got bored and started making stuff.” Further evidence of the family’s unique sense of humor can be found on the logo mugs they design and display at the back of the shop.

Although the first time naming one, this is not Shari’s first foray into the boutique business. She ran a boutique in Arizona and the original Clever Cow was in Lone Tree but was too far away and costly to run. After a time, her friends and mother encouraged her to open another business, and when this cute little shop became available on Main Street, Shari Norton was in business again.

Open since March, the shop at 286 S. Main St. in Elizabeth is approaching its third season in business. New autumn products such as fall spice teas, corrugated pumpkins, skulls, scented candles, apple cider, muffin kits and many more seasonal items will be ready for purchase at the Clever Cow soon. At that time simply walk through the gate, follow the stone path to the birch framed welcome sign and step inside to learn what those clever cows have been up to.

“This is really awesome to have the community come out and show how appreciative they are of what we do,” said Elbert County Sheriff Tim Norton. “And community businesses really came together to make this happen.”

Radar, a purebred bloodhound with the Elizabeth Police Department, was a big hit with the kids and posed for pictures with his handler, officer Frank Hurst. Radar is credited with assisting on 22 homicides, finding numerous Alzheimer’s patients who have wandered off, and travels with Hurst across the states in search of missing children and cadavers.

Adam Neisen has been with Elizabeth Fire and Rescue for 14 years, and spent the evening visiting with residents and enjoying live music provided by “We are Madeleine.”

“It’s nice to see the community come out and support us,” said Neisen. “And it’s nice for them to know we support them.”

“I don’t know how many other communities do this,” said Hasler. “We have several agencies here tonight, and it’s the whole team coming out to show support for each other. Together we all get the job done.”

Farms turn to technology amid water warnings Methods aim to minimize use of irrigation with eye on future demands

A drone soared over a blazing hot cornfield in northeastern Colorado on a recent morning, snapping images with an infrared camera to help researchers decide how much water they would give the crops the next day.

After a brief, snaking flight above the field, the drone landed and the researchers removed a handful of memory cards. Back at their computers, they analyzed the images for signs the corn was stressed from a lack of water.

This U.S. Department of Agriculture station outside Greeley and other sites across the Southwest are experimenting with drones, specialized cameras and other technology to squeeze the most out of every drop of water in the Colorado River — a vital but beleaguered waterway that serves an estimated 40 million people, including people on the eastern side of the Continental Divide, where some Colorado River water is diverted.

Cellphone apps collect data from agricultural weather stations and calculate how much water different crops are consuming. Researchers deliberately cut back on water for some crops, trying to get the best harvest with the least amount of moisture — a practice called deficit irrigation.

In the future, tiny needles attached to plants could directly measure how much water they contain and signal irrigation systems to automatically switch on or off.

“It’s like almost every month somebody’s coming up with something here and there,” said Don Ackley, water management supervisor for the Coachella Valley Water District in Southern California. “You almost can’t keep up with it.”

Researchers and farmers are running similar experiments in arid regions around the world. The need is especially pressing in seven U.S. states that rely on the Colorado River: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

Future uncertain at best The Colorado River has plenty of water this summer after an unusually snowy winter in the mountains of the U.S. West. But climatologists warn the river’s long-term outlook is uncertain at best and dire at worst,

and competition for water will only intensify as the population grows and the climate changes.

The World Resources Institute says the seven Colorado River states have some of the highest levels of water stress in the nation, based on the percentage of available supplies they use in a year. New Mexico was the only state in the nation under extremely high water stress.

The federal government has been gathering information for a projection on whether the Colorado River system has enough water to meet all the demands of downstream states in future years.

The river supplies more than 7,000 square miles (18,000 square kilometers) of farmland and supports a $5 billion-a-year agricultural industry, including a significant share of the nation’s winter vegetables, according to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which manages most of the big dams and reservoirs in the Western states.

The Pacific Institute, an environmental group, says the river also irrigates about 700 square miles (1,820 square kilometers) in Mexico.

Agriculture uses 57% to 70% of the system’s water in the U.S., researchers say. The problem facing policymakers is how to divert some of that to meet the needs of growing cities without drying up farms, ranches and the environment.

The researchers’ goal is understanding crops, soil and weather so completely that farmers know exactly when and how much to irrigate.

“We call it precision agriculture, precision irrigation,” said Huihui Zhang, a Department of Agriculture engineer who conducts experiments at the Greeley research farm. “Right amount at the right time at the right location.”

The Palo Verde Irrigation District in Southern California is trying deficit irrigation on alfalfa, the most widely grown crop in the Colorado River Basin.

Alfalfa, which is harvested as hay to feed horses and cattle, can be cut and baled several times a year in some climates. The Palo Verde district is experimenting with reduced water for the midsummer crop, which requires more irrigation but produces lower yields.

Sensors placed over the test plots indirectly measure how much water the plants are using, and the harvested crop is weighed to determine the yield.

“The question then becomes, what’s the economic value of the lost crop versus the economic value of the saved water?” said Bart Fisher, a third-generation farmer and a member of the irrigation district board.

He also uses on-farm weather stations and soil moisture monitors, keeping track of the data on his cellphone. His drip and micro-spray irrigation systems deliver water directly to the base of a plant or its roots instead of saturating an entire field.

For Carian and many other farmers, the appeal of technology is as much about economics as saving water.

“The conservation’s just a byproduct. We’re getting better crops, and we are, in general, saving money,” he said.

Economics in play But researchers say water-saving technology could determine whether some farms can stay in business at all, especially in Arizona, which faces cuts in its portion of Colorado River water under a drought contingency plan the seven states hammered out this year.

“If we’re going to take stuff out of production because we don’t have enough water, I think these technologies could help identify which ones you should be taking out,” Martin said.

Each technology has benefits and limits, said Kendall DeJonge, another Agriculture Department engineer who does research at the Greeley farm.

Soil moisture monitors measure a single point, but a farm has a range of conditions and soil types. Infrared images can spot thirsty crops, but only after they need water. Agricultural weather stations provide a wealth of data on the recent past, but they can’t predict the future.

“All of these things are tools in the toolbox,” DeJonge said. “None of them are a silver bullet.”

RidgeGate Parkway: the road to the future RidgeGate Parkway is being widened as big development approaches

The frequent traffic backups along RidgeGate Parkway are something to be expected these days. With just two lanes — one in each direction — for through traffic, backups can reach half a mile from the stoplight at the RidgeGate and I-25 interchange.

Recent counts show the traffic in that area to be between 26,00 and 28,000 cars per day, according to Lone Tree’s public works director, Justin Schmitz. The city does regular counts of traffic. That range is an average over an entire week. Typically, it is recommended that a road be expanded to four lanes once it hits about 16,000 cars per day, Schmitz said. A count of roughly 36,000 cars per day typically calls for expanding to six lanes.

To address the problem, the City of Lone Tree has spearheaded the RidgeGate Parkway Widening Project, a nearly $27 million expense shared by several funding partners. By 2021, plans call for the road to be expanded to four lanes, with bike paths and sidewalks. From I-25 to Peoria, the

“This has been an ongoing need for the region,” Schmitz said.

Though RidgeGate Parkway gets its name for the neighborhood it cuts through, it turns into Parker’s Mainstreet, which is just about at the town’s center — making it a major arterial road not just for future Lone

Tree residents, but for Parker residents on their way to and from work.

And for the time being, it’s mostly Parker residents.

The Town of Parker is not contributing any funds to the widening project, but officials have been coordinating with Parker on the project.

“It’s good for northeast Douglas County,” said Chris Hudson, Parker’s

Background Hudson began working for the town in 1999. During a meeting in Parker shortly after he started, Hudson recalled the initial discussions about what is known today as RidgeGate Parkway.

At the time, a two-lane dirt road cut diagonally through northern Douglas County, connecting with Lincoln Avenue, and it was known as West Parker Road.

“There were times when people said ‘RidgeGate is never going to go to I-25.

Mainstreet’s never going to I-25,’” Hudson said. “You’ve got to believe.

And it finally did.”

RidgeGate Parkway was extended to connect with Parker’s Mainstreet in 2011. It cut through what is now known as RidgeGate East, providing yet another east-west connection for commuters from Parker, Franktown, Elizabeth and parts of unincorporated Douglas and Elbert counties.

Once the road opened, getting from I-25 to eastern Douglas County immediately became easier. About a year or two in, the not-so-secret RidgeGate Parkway began to reach its capacity.

“Consequently, with all the growth that is occurring … people now, in the morning and evening commutes, they avoid RidgeGate Parkway because how congested it gets, especially where it narrows down and you approach I-25,” said Tom Williams, Parker’s director of public works.

Parker Road and other town roadways bear the brunt of extra traffic congestion for people traveling south of town who could be better suited using RidgeGate Parkway instead of Parker Road, he said.

‘Meet the needs of today’ The RidgeGate Parkway Widening Project is being constructed in two phases. The first phase began in April and is expected to be finished

by January. That phase includes the construction of two bridges, one crossing Badger Gulch and another across Happy Canyon Creek. The second phase began recently and includes earth work and prep work to widen the rest of the parkway. Phase two is not expected to be finished until spring of 2021.

“To the general public, as you drive it today, you should not anticipate any significant delays. The current lane capacity — one lane each direction — that will be maintained throughout the entire project,” Schmitz said. “There may be short-

time closures for a little bit of work, but during peak hours it’s going to remain in the same condition it is in today. Once it is complete, they (drivers) will experience (better traffic).”

The $26.9 million project is being funded by multiple partners. The Colorado Department of Transportation and the Denver Regional Council of Governments funded about $6.4 million. Douglas County contributed $2.5 million, the Southeast Public Improvement Metro District contributed $2.5 million and the Rampart Range Metro District contributed $15.5 million. The project is managed by the city.

“The county stepped up and put a lot of money into this project with Lone Tree,” Hudson said.

Part of the refinement of the RidgeGate Widening Project was to install a one-way couplet — a pair of parallel streets running in opposite directions — that would extend through the future retail zone of East RidgeGate, similar to Martin Luther King Boulevard in Denver, which has a King Soopers in the middle of the couplet.

The city will also be providing a multi-use path and bike track along the entire 2.2-mile section.

“What (the project is) really doing is allowing the roadways to meet the needs of today, and all the commuters on it, as well as accommodate the future growth in Lone Tree east of I-25,” Schmitz said. “This is allowing for all that future growth to come in and use that new roadway.”

Views from an expert in the laughingstock market

could give a two-day seminar on the No. 2 pencil, but I couldn’t have an intelligent two-minute conversation about the stock market.

Those words — “stock market” — have intimidated me since the first time I heard them.

I don’t remember QUIET when that was, but it DESPERATION might have been in an American history class.

Perhaps when I first heard about the Stock Market Crash of 1929. I still don’t understand why that happened. I have the facts right in front of me: it lasted Craig Marshall four days, it was the Smith worst ever, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 25%, and it lost $30 billion in market value.

Now: What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average?

See what I mean? And it’s hopeless.

I have no plans to educate myself.

I am, primarily, right-brained, and there are some things that my mind resists. The stock market is one of them.

I was reminded of this when I read “Dow closes higher after China blinks.” Should I sigh with relief ?

Gather with friends and celebrate?

Order Chinese take-out?

I have skipped past the business section in the newspaper for decades.

There are no pictures, just numbers, and a language foreign to me.

“Arbitrage,” “averaging down,” and “day trading” mean nothing to me.

The consolation is — or might be — that I know how to talk about abstract art with the best of them.

Left-brained people often are just as inept when it comes to a conversation about abstract art as I am when it comes to talking about Dow Jones.

I guess insiders call it “The Dow.” I can’t do that, because I’m on the outside.

I wondered if there was a man named Dow Jones who was responsible for all of this, and I discovered it was two men: one named Dow and one named Jones.

Then why isn’t it the “Dow & Jones Industrial Average”?

Charles Dow was a 19th-century Wall Street journal editor.

(I know how Wall Street got its name, by the way.)

Whenever they show the stock market in action in real life or films, it looks like total chaos, with men and women shouting and running around with little pieces of paper in their hands.

I cannot comprehend how and why stock market fluctuations impact my life.

You may be wondering if I own any stocks. I wouldn’t know where to begin. I am sure I would have invested in New Coke.

I have seen copies of The Wall Street Journal, cold and gray and humorless. It disappoints me that I haven’t given it a chance. I feel the

same way about chess.

Chess will be another gap in my resume. I know about Chess Records, and that’s about it.

Chess Records specialized in rhythm and blues. It was founded (in Chicago) by two Jewish immigrants: Leonard and Phil Chess. The record label features images of chess pieces.

Don’t ask me to play chess. But I will play Chess. Howlin’ Wolf recorded for Chess.

A No. 2 pencil is capable of making a line 35 miles long. Or writing approximately 45,000 words. Or creating drawings — portraits — of Charles Dow and his business partner, Edward Jones.

This is for all of you left-brained readers. I don’t get it, but maybe you will: How do find a small-cap fund manager? Find a large-cap fund manager and wait.

Managing the game clock for greater success

s it our time management skills that need a little work, or is the enemy time compression?

“Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week” — Anonymous How true. And we all know what the problem is when we push things off to tomorrow, the problem is that tomorrow we push them off again to WINNING the next day, and WORDS then the next day, and then the next day. The question is: Why? Perhaps it is one of these two things, time management or time compression. It is probably a combination of the two.

As I speak with Michael Norton people about this topic, and I ask them which one they believe it is, they initially point to time management and a perceived lack of skill. Yet after they consider the words, “time compression” for a moment, they often realize that this

may be the real driver or reason they are struggling with time management. And not managing their own game clock correctly is keeping them from achieving the success they were pursuing.

Why does time compression happen? One common reason people shared is that they are saying “yes” to too many things in all areas of their lives and spreading themselves too thin. In trying to keep up with the rush and crush of life, trying to be liked and please everyone at home and at work, they stack too many things into each day and come to realize there is no way to get it all done.

The unintended consequence here is that they often miss deadlines and deliverables, letting down others and more importantly, letting themselves down. Learning to say no will help us all to become better at avoiding time compression.

Another common theme that came up was not managing the game clock.

We see it all of the time in sports as there is a play clock and a game clock going at the same time. When we are

bad for our health. We all have the same 24 hours in a day, and the people who are achieving the greatest levels of success and enjoying peace of mind are those that have learned how to say no to some things so that they can say yes to the important things.

They have also learned how to manage their game clock personally and professionally and set proper expectations for themselves and others along the way.

taking on projects and tasks, when we are in meetings, and even when we are in a sales call, we have to manage the clock better. If we have an hour to get something done or complete a meeting, we can avoid the feeling of time compression by understanding where we are in relation to the time that we started with on the game clock and where we are along the way and adjust as needed.

One mistake I see and hear about all too often is the salesperson who schedules a 60-minute meeting with a prospect and they soon run out of time. When they get there and start their discussion and questioning, they quickly forget how much time they scheduled or lose track of time, and before they know it, there isn’t any time left on the clock for presenting their solution or for identifying very clear next steps. The unintended consequence here is that a scheduled sales call became a very nice visit and conversation, but it was not a sales call, and worse, there was no sale.

n esports or competitive video game player is like a Formula 1 driver, says James Love. He says every reaction in the two sports demands intense, unbroken focus, and adds that esports athletes incorporate multiple gym workouts into their training schedule.

“The notion that esports players aren’t athletic is ignorant and outdated, to be blunt. Serious players put in six to 10 hours of gaming per day in order to hone their skills, and even though it looks like they’re sitting still, they’re exerting a lot of effort,” said Love, a communications director for the Philadelphia-based esports network N3rd Street Gamers, in an email.

The esports network opened up the Lakewood-based Localhost esports arena last year, an 18,000-square-foot facility that offers 120 custom-built gaming PCs and video game consoles like Xbox Ones and PlayStation 4s and a 60-foot stage for events and tournaments. Love says business has been well, noting that the esports arena has put on “huge” three-day championship events with combined prizes of $25,000.

It’s expected that global esports revenue will exceed $1 billion this year, according to a report by esports analytics firm Newzoo. The esports industry has seen names like former MLB player Alex Rodriguez, NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal and celebrities like Jennifer Lopez investing in esports companies and teams.

“While gaming has always been a form of entertainment, three factors contributed to it becoming a sport: competition, tournaments and spectators. The number of people who count video games as a primary source of entertainment and leisure

and placement in games. In turn, those points can get esports players to national competitions.

“Everyone is a gamer, that’s the reality. Some people are not accepting to the fact that they are a game, because they might be more on the casual side,” said Barr who is commissioner of The National Championship Series.

Colorado Abstract+10: A Survey In 2009, a handsome art book recorded a survey of works by Colorado’s abstract artists. It was called “Colorado Abstract” by authors Michael Paglia and Mary Voelz

Priest waits out injury to resume walk across country Peter Munson sidelined by foot woes but itching to get back on road

For roughly six weeks, he walked along Kansas roads as a sore on his toe worsened from a pesky blister to a painful infection. Still, the former Episcopal priest who lives in Colorado kept going.

On Aug. 10 Peter Munson, still traveling by foot, passed into Colorado and continued until he reached Colorado Springs. The 61-year-old had walked roughly 2,100 miles by then, more than half as far as he planned to go. But the pain in his toe had grown to the point that wearing a shoe felt excruciating.

Finally, he called it quits. At least for the time being.

Munson, who’s walking from South Carolina to California to raise money for charity, canceled a planned Aug. 13 appearance in Castle Rock and paused his walking mission because of the foot injury, which required that he seek medical attention.

“Saturday it was causing me to limp,” he said on Tuesday, Aug. 12, before a doctor visit in his hometown of Arvada. “Taking this week off to see if I can get well.”

The former priest began his journey on March 4 in Charleston, South Carolina. He estimated then it would take 6 million steps to reach his final destination of San Francisco. He now believes, with 1,600 miles to go, the journey will take 7.5 million steps.

Munson hopes to raise money for each mile he walks to benefit four charities — The REMAR Children’s Home and School in El Salvador, the Denver-based Street Fraternity, Episcopal Relief and Development and lastly the Episcopal Church in Colorado. He’s raised approximately $4,300 to date.

Joe Kissell, a four-year member of Christ’s Episcopal Church in Castle Rock, where Munson’s appearance was scheduled, said he was eager to hear the traveling priest speak.

“I’m kind of amazed,” he said of Munson’s mission. “I guess more than anything I’m just glad that there is someone like the former reverend here that’s so willing to do something like that, because that’s a tremendous effort.”

Munson said the idea for his crosscountry journey sparked more than 10 years ago.

“I actually heard a calling when I was finishing up a hike,” he said. “It wasn’t audible words, but it was a really clear message about walking across the country, speaking and writing and raising money for people in

Munson is an avid hiker who’s tackled most Colorado’s fourteeners.

He felt prepared for the physical feat of walking across the U.S. But the timing wasn’t right in his personal life to begin the journey in 2008. Instead he spent three summers training by backpacking between Denver and

Durango.

This year was right year for him, Munson said, so he quit his job, closing nearly three decades as a priest, and started walking.

“Part of the reason I’m walking is there’s a lot of people in the world who still walk to get water, go to school, to go in the field to work, who even walk sometimes great distances to go to a medical clinic,” he said.

His method of fundraising is meant to be in solidary with people who have no other means of traveling, he said. He blogs about his experiences, dubbed 6 Million Steps for Kids, at 6millionstepsforkids.org.

Despite being physically fit, Munson knew there would be challenges. In Tennessee he was nearly attacked by loose dogs, which he fended off using pepper spray. Near Pueblo, he walked through a lightning storm.

“There’s a lot of people in the world that have tougher odds from an early age,” he said. “I try to take in that perspective when my toe hurts or when I’m having a scary day.”

Father Brian Winter of Christ’s Episcopal Church said when church leadership learned Munson’s route passed through the area, they wanted him to share his story with people in Castle Rock.

progress on Facebook, first learning about the project at a clergy convention before it began. When Munson passed through Missouri, Winter connected him with a local friend who found Munson a place to stay.

Munson said he was surprised by the hospitality he’s received in each of the nine states he’s walked through to date.

The trip has taken 160 days so far.

Munson ended nearly all by staying in churches or homes of local families who opened their doors to him. He’s needed to camp only four nights.

Winter wished Munson’s Castle Rock visit could be rescheduled. There are life lessons parishioners could learn from his project, Winter said.

“If you’re passionate about something, follow that,” he said.

After his doctor visit, Munson wasn’t letting the troublesome blister, officially diagnosed as a pressure ulcer, dampen his spirits. He hoped to be back on the road by Aug. 19 with the help of antibiotics.

He planned to restart his walk in Boulder, where he’d expected to be by that date, in order to make other speaking obligations his team has scheduled along his route. He’ll spend several weeks walking through Colorado before continuing through Utah and Nevada before ending in California.

“A part of me doesn’t really believe I’m doing this,” he said. “It seems a little surreal to have walked 2,100 miles. Wow, really, how have I done this? But I try to remember the children and why I’m doing it and what I’m walking for.”

Here’s why it’s best to remove false teeth before surgery: You just might swallow them.

A medical journal is reporting the case of a 72-year-old British man whose partial dentures apparently got stuck in his throat during surgery and weren’t discovered for eight days.

The man went to the emergency room because he was having a hard time swallowing and was coughing up blood. Doctors ordered a chest Xray, diagnosed him with pneumonia and sent him home with antibiotics and steroids. It took another hospital visit before another X-ray revealed the problem: His dentures — a metal roof plate and three false teeth — lodged at the top of this throat.

The man thought his dentures were lost while he was in the hospital for minor surgery.

How it happened isn’t exactly clear, but a half-dozen previous cases have been documented of dentures going astray as surgical patients were put to sleep.

‘Stay on the safe side. Inform your physician of what’s going on in your mouth.’

Besides dentures, retainers, loose teeth and tongue piercings can cause problems, said Peterson, who is president-elect of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Before a child’s surgery, she’ll pull a very loose tooth

and tell the patient to expect a visit from the tooth fairy. “We can make a nice game of it.”

In the British case, after the dentures were removed, the man had several bouts of bleeding that required more surgery before he recovered. The journal article didn’t identify the man or the hospital involved.

What can be learned from this case? Doctors need to listen carefully to their patients and build a timeline of what happened rather than relying heavily on scans and tests, said Dr. Rui Amaral Mendes, an associate editor of BMJ Case Reports, which published the paper Monday.

For their part, patients should tell their doctors about mouth problems before surgery, said Mendes, an oral surgeon at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. That includes dentures, blisters and serious gum disease. Loose teeth could be knocked down the throat when tubes are put into the airway.

“Stay on the safe side,” he said.

“Inform your physician of what’s going on in your mouth.”
